Fundraising efforts intensify for July 4 fireworks display Events set to ignite support toward $24,000 goal BY TERRIE LEIGH RELF | BEACH & BAY PRESS

HAS THE FUTURE DRIED UP FOR THE PLUNGE?

This year marks the Mission Bay Yacht Club’s 28th annual Fourth of July fireworks event, a tradition that the beach and bay community, and children of all ages, looks forward to each year. But fundraising is so far less than halfway to the targeted goal of $24,000 to put on the pyrotechnics display. As of June 1, the yacht club was busily trying to raise an additional $15,000 toward that mark. There was good news last week, however. Show organizers at Mission Bay, La Jolla and elsewhere in the city breathed a sigh of relief June 3 when a San Diego County Superior Court judge suspended

her ruling requiring Fourth of July fireworks in La Jolla and elsewhere to undergo environmental review. Now the challenge for the Mission Bay Yacht Club will be to continue its appeals for financial support for the show that is roughly only a month away, said Jennifer Henehan, the yacht club’s volunteer fundraising chairwoman While the yacht club is only open to members, Henehan said the display, which is created by one of the top pyrotechnic companies in the nation, is visible throughout the north side of the bay, and can also be seen from the Pacific Beach hills, Mt. Soledad and Kate SesSEE FIREWORKS, Page 6

The Plunge at Belmont Park sits unused after being closed in the midst of a bitter lease dispute between the city and Tom LochtePhotos by Jim Grant I Beach & Bay Press feld, the master leaseholder of the revitalized Belmont Park amusement/entertainment complex.

Acrid lease dispute places fate of historic pool in jeopardy BY DEBBIE HATCH | BEACH & BAY PRESS om Lochtefeld, owner of the Wave House Athletic Club, Sound Wave and the master lease holder who operates the Plunge at Belmont Park, has found himself in a leasing stalemate with the city — and neither side seems to have a solution to reopen the historic swimming pool built in 1925. The Plunge has been closed since May 26 and there are no indications the pool will reopen anytime soon. “The city provided me with official notice that they are requesting that the bankruptcy court terminate the extension of stay [that would allow the Plunge to continue operating under previous leasing terms],” Lochtefeld announces the indefinite closure of the Plunge in late May after the city Lochtefeld said. “The city is no reportedly refused to budge on its demands to increase his lease from $70,000 annu- longer willing to negotiate.”

T

ally to $480,000. The city claims Lochtefeld knew what he was getting into when he signed the lease agreement in 2002 and that he has since exhausted his rent credits.

A whale of a time awaits explorers with oceanbound sightseeing cruises BY KENDRA HARTMANN | BEACH & BAY PRESS The San Diego Natural History Museum and H&M Landing are teaming up to present a second season of nature trips at sea, where passengers can expect to see blue whales, pods of dolphins, sea lions, sea birds and more. Ship’s passengers will have an opportunity to learn about all they see through commentary and interpretation by the Museum’s highly trained volunteers known as the “Museum Whalers.” The largest mammal to ever inhabit Earth, there were once an estimated 300,000 blue whales roaming the oceans. Their numbers have been reduced to less than 15,000 worldwide, but the species is making a comeback and San Diegans can experience them up close off the coast. Operating from two boats — the 105foot Bright & Morning Star and the 85foot Ocean Odyssey — the museum

offers two trips a week on Thursdays and Sundays through October. Boats board at H&M Landing, 2803 Emerson St. in Pt. Loma. Trips run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tickets are $75 for museum members and military and $80 for non-members and can be purchased through the museum’s website at www.sdnhm.org, H&M Landing’s website at www.hmlanding.com or by calling (619) 222-1144. The whales off the California coast are Northern Hemisphere blue whales who spend the summers in nutrient rich waters off the coast of California. They winter in the warmer waters of the Gulf of California and near Costa Rica. They travel to where the krill is found, usually off the coast of California. The weather patterns El Nino and La Nina influence the availability of krill. Northern Hemisphere blue whales are slightly smaller than their Antarctic counterparts. They can grow up to 80 feet long.

JJ is one lucky black cat. In late May, thanks to microchipping, he rejoined delighted mom Sparr García and his feline sister, Cake, 17 months after he disappeared from his Pacific Beach home. A kindly soul found JJ wandering the streets just 12 blocks from his home and took him to the Gaines Street shelter of the county’s Department of Animal Services (DAS). Shelter staff scan all stray animals for microchips. JJ was fortunate to have a microchip with valid contact information filed with a national registration company. Only four percent of lost or stray cats brought into shelters — and 35 percent of dogs – are reunited with their families. Microchips better the odds of reunification, but only if contact information is current. Just one week before JJ was returned home, a microchipped Chihuahua was returned to her Chula Vista family after a five-year absence. “National registration (service) is a plus. After Hurricane Katrina, we had microchips linked to a vet clinic, but the clinic was destroyed,” said DAS Lt. Dan DeSousa. The story began in December 2009 while Garcia was away for Christmas and a friend was looking after her cats. It was then that JJ got out. García post-

ed signs in the neighborhood and checked shelters, but to no avail. “He’s a really friendly cat. I’m sure he went up to someone and they probably took him home. He’s probably been an indoor cat for the last year and a half,” García said. García said she was stunned when her fiancé got the call from DAS that JJ had been found. She said she was also grateful she had listed a secondary contact number on the microchip registration, since her phone number had since changed. Although she said it feels surreal to

have JJ back, she said she’s happy the feline has reintegrated rapidly into the family and that Cake recognized him. She praises the care JJ received at the shelter, where he received a checkup and shots, ensuring he was healthy for his return home. She also recommends microchipping for pets. “It’s really inexpensive to get your pet microchipped. It’s so worth it,” she said. DAS offers microchipping at all three county shelters every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. for $20 per pet. For details, visit www.sddac.com.

I actually voted against the beach alcohol ban. I don’t think it has become more familyoriented at all. I think it just draws a huge amount of people and they litter and its crowded. I don’t mind sitting on the beach enjoying a drink and watching my kids play in the sand.”

I don’t know the exact definition of ‘family friendly’ but I never saw any riots here. As far as wild drunkenness, that was only on certain days during the summer and only in the area in front of Lahaina’s. PB has always been a wonderful place for all.”

Bret Dixon Pacific Beach Beach Bum

I think all beaches are more attractive without d r i n k i n g . H o w e v e r, since there are more bars in certain areas, I think those beaches still attract the partiers and the young crowds compared to the beaches that were always family-based.”

I think its moderation more than anything. If you’re respectful about what you are doing then you should be allowed to do what you want. If you’re disrespecting the beach and leaving broken bottles, then that’s not safe for people.”

A taste of country, AC/DC tribute and roots soul music

MICHAEL LECLERC Canadian musician Michael Leclerc has a wonderfully soulful voice and plays guitar a bit better than most. But where he truly excels is in his songwriting. Mixing soul, powerpop and acoustic rock, Leclerc has an arsenal of hook-filled material that’s seriously impressive. It’s an eclectic batch of tunes. “Breathe” is a highenergy number taking the best elements of all three genres to craft a song that’s pure groove and would appeal to Style Council fans. Meanwhile, “Turnaround” is a dynamic rocker in the tradition of pop-tinged combos like The Gin Blossoms or Smithereens, and would stand up to any of their hits. Leclerc has a Saturday evening residency alongside guitarist Jonathan Ebanks at the Tiki House each Saturday in June at 6 p.m. For anyone who enjoys music more on the melodic side, this is definitely a talent you’ll want to hear. Michael Leclerc and Jonathan Ebanks perform at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 and June 18 at The Tiki House, 1152 Garnet Ave. No cover. 21 and up. www.myspace.com/michaelleclercmusic — Bart Mendoza

One of the leading lights of San Diego’s current country music community, Three Chord Justice, which performs at Tio Leo’s on June 10, plays classic Bakersfield-styled numbers. The band performs its own originals and evergreens like “Act Naturally.” Winner of the 2010 KSON Big Country Showdown, the band is led by singer Liz Grace. But it when it comes to musicianship, this is an all-star combo, with steel guitar player Tom Wolverton and lead player Jeff Houck particularly noteworthy. Whether you’re a fan of country’s classic songs or newer chart hits, Three Chord Justice offers up something for just about everybody. Cover TBD. myspace.com/ threechordjustice There are a lot of hard rock bands but few have had the staying power of AC/DC. While the band tours steadily, it can’t possibly meet the demand of its fanbase. Enter local quintet Back 2 Black, which appears at the 710 Beach Club on June 10, 9 p.m. Fronted by singer Sammy Salvo, the band focuses on AC/DC’s Brian Johnson-era material, going the extra mile and even dressing the part — down to guitarist Paul Howlie wearing the schoolboy outfit. There won’t be any surprises, but with tunes like “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Back in Black” in the set list, hard rock fans should be more than pleased with the selections. Music has to be just about the hardest business to make it in. Yet each year, countless bands enter the fray, each hoping for a shot at the brass ring. Luckily for up-andcomers, there are a few select events that can place an unknown in front of thousands of listeners. For indie rock fans, it doesn’t get better than Warped Tour, which takes a gaggle of like-minded musicians on a road trip across the country. On June 15, Brick by Brick will host the preliminary trials in a battle of the bands, with the top prize being a coveted spot at the festival, recording time and new gear. While artists had not been named at press time, up to a halfdozen hungry new bands will be on hand, all trying to do their best. Rock aficionados won’t want to miss this show. Warped Tour 2011 Battle of the Bands prelims begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15 at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 21 and up. $10. www.brickbybrick.com Formed less than six months ago, sevenpiece reggae and soul band Zig Zag Jones, which appears at RT’s Longboard on June 17, has already made quite a splash. The key to the band’s sound is that splash of soul. With song titles like “Hawaii” and “There’s Love,” you know the basics of the groups sound. However, where most reggae groups dwell on the funk and dub aspect of the music, Zig Zag Jones goes for roots soul music, making for songs with a strong beat and strong choruses. If you are drawn to Island sounds, you’ll want to check these guys out.

I know it is important that my home is in the name of our trust, are there any assets that we can leave out of our trust?

Question:

The law says that anyone can have less than $100,000 of assets not in the name of a trust or joint names at the time they die and avoid probate. This rule does not include real estate. The safer guideline is to put any asset value over $10,000 in the name of the trust. Virginia Weber Laskowitz This does not include vehicles, unless you have a “Protecting Family Assets” Rolls Royce. If you have real estate valued at less than $20,000, you avoid probate and no, this is not a typo. If you have either one, assets over $100,000 or real estate over $20,000, then you should have a trust to avoid the court procedure and all the costs of probate. Other assets that do not need to be in the name of the trust are assets that have beneficiary designations, like all retirement plans, IRA’s, 401ks and pay on death accounts. You can name individuals as the beneficiaries and not a trust and they will avoid probate. If your major beneficiary is a minor, incompetent or disabled person, then having the trust be a beneficiary of these accounts may be the appropriate thing to do. You may also need a special type of trust as well. Your attorney can go over these issues with you and help you plan your estate for your family .

BOARDWALKBEAT

Beach & Bay Press reporter Lee Cornell said he will miss views like these from his old beach Photo by Lee Cornell house rental he was forced to give up this month when his lease expired.

Sometimes, it really is hard to say goodbye BY LEE CORNELL | BEACH & BAY PRESS They say goodbyes are never easy. But that just isn’t always true. For instance, I’m sure most inmates leaving their cells for the last time are pretty happy to say, “Sayonara!” Mostly though, goodbyes are difficult. They can be some of the saddest times humans experience. This week I said goodbye to the beach house I’ve been living in for the last nine months. My lease is up, summer vacationers with big bucks are on their way and I’ve got to go. I’ve been filled with anxiety the last several weeks just thinking about leaving this quaint little house in Mission Beach. This was my first experience living on the beach and there have been so many great times during my relatively short stay here, like looking out my window in the morning and scoping the waves for a potential surf session. Or there was hopping on my bike and cruising the boardwalk for a quick ride or a long

sions Park. The show begins at 9 p.m. and generally lasts a half-hour. “We have donations coming in and commitments for more,” said Henehan. “We have one member who has offered boat rides on the Fourth of July to donors over $5,000, depending on demand.” There is no size limit on donations, which may be mailed or hand-delivered. Without the funds, the show will have to be canceled, said organizers. There are some fundraising events in the works. Ray Corallino, head coach and general manager of Millers Field in Pacific Beach, has three events planned.

excursion along the bay and beyond. But most of all, what makes this little community such a special place are the people. I have met and befriended some of the kindest, most insightful and most genuine people in this little pocket of gold. Just a few of them include the many really cool and sympathetic business owners who dot the coast from the Big Dipper all the way to Tourmaline. Then there are the wise old locals with all their stories about how this town has grown up and inevitably changed for better or worse. There is the multitude of searching souls who come here from all over the country and the world in search of a better life who add to the ambiance and diversity of the beach. And I can’t forget about the surfers with their predominantly laid-back attitude mixed with a zest and never-ending longing for the sea. Yes, I will definitely miss it here. Oh yeah, one more thing. Did I mention the sunsets aren’t too shabby either? On June 11 and June 25 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Millers Field will be hosting Bikini Car Washes with the Millers Girls. The cost will be $20 per car, and Millers Field will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Mission Bay Yacht Club’s fireworks fund. The third event, a gangster/flapperstyle casino night will be held on June 29, and is expected to be a major fundraising affair. The cost is $80 per person, and will include either a hosted bar for the first hour or a free drink ticket, appetizers and dinner buffet, gaming tables, as well as prizes from local merchants and vendors. “This is for a good cause and is beneficial to everyone in the area,” said Corallino. “It’s important to keep things going.” Corallino’s goal is to raise $10,000

Lochtefeld, who had been paying $70,000 annually since signing his lease agreement with the city in 2002, has apparently run out of rent credits and is now subject to new terms of $480,000 annually. Lochtefeld filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November to force a renegotiation with the city. On the flip side, city officials have said Lochtefeld signed the 2002 lease with an understanding of the higher lease rate later, and maintain he is now trying to change the terms after the fact. The reality, Lochtefeld said, is that his only options are to either accept the new terms of the higher lease or to reject them. If he accepts, Lochtefeld will also have to pay nearly $500,000 is back rent, which began accumulating in June 2010. On July 1, the bankruptcy case and leasing feud will go to court to determine whether the bank will take over the lease. “I will not accept the lease,” Lochtefeld said. Ahead of that court date, Lochtefeld is set to appear today, June 9, before the judge, who will seek an update on negotiations between the city and Lochtefeld. “The logic was to negotiate,” Lochtefeld said. “The city refuses to negotiate.” District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer, whose district covers Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, was unavailable for comment, according to staffers. “There’s not a lot [Faulconer] can publically do and say because this matter is in bankruptcy court,” said Tony Manolatos, Faulconer’s deputy chief of staff. Faulconer wants to make sure the Plunge is able to remain open, but also wants to make sure that the community is fairly represented, from the trio of events, and he said he hopes the efforts will inspire and encourage local hotels to donate as well. For those concerned with the recent decision by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board to require use permits for fireworks shows at a cost of more than $1,450, Henehan said the “Mission Bay Yacht Club is working with all permitting agencies to run a safe and fun Fourth of July show. We abide by all water and environmental restrictions. The yacht club is proud of its stewardship of Mission Bay and seeks to promote safe and secure holiday events for many years to come.” Residents may mail donations to the Mission Bay Yacht Club, 1215 El Carmel Place, San Diego, 92109-7499. Manolatos said. “Kevin’s priority is obviously to make sure that the city taxpayers are being protected,” Manolatos said. The “fifth operating memorandum” is the document at the center of the leasing stalemate. It was adopted on June 26, 2000. According to the document, after the rent credits from previous enhancements to the Plunge and Belmont Park ran out, Lochtefeld could accrue further rent credits if he were to make improvements to the structure and adding parking, Lochtefeld said. Byron Wear was the District 2 City Councilman from 1995-2002 at the time the document was adopted. He recalls the revitalization that took place at Belmont Park with the introduction of the Wave House owned by Lochtefeld — where Cane’s Bar and Grill operated previously. It attracted a new athletic crowd to the area, Byron said. Lochtefeld said he was under the impression that if he came up with an economically viable plan to maintain and improve Belmont Park, he would continue to receive future rent credits, even after the initial rent credits expired in 2010. In 2006, he introduced to the city a plan to build a hotel, additional parking and attractions to increase revenues. But Lochtefeld said his plan was denied by the city in 2008, which meant that if no improvements were made, there would be no future rent credits. “They led me down the primrose path,” Lochtefeld said. Wear agreed. “You don’t just turn down a plan,” Wear said. “You try to counter with something that would be win-win for everybody.” Meanwhile, regular Plunge swimmers and fitness enthusiasts do not have a place to exercise. Many are apparently seeking out other pools

throughout the city or are waiting to see what happens in the short term with the Plunge. “There’s a number of health organizations which use this pool, too,” Lochtefeld said. Patrons associated with the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Arthritis Foundation are each having to find warm water elsewhere or are forced to no longer participate in water therapies. “We’ve lost over a third of the income,” Lochtefeld said. Don Watkinds, a Pacific Beach resident since 1995, is the Wave House San Diego swim team coach. The team practiced at the Plunge five days a week. “We are going to try, one way or another, to keep it going,” Watkinds said. He and his team are hoping for a short-term solution so they can get back to the Plunge for practices. The team has been swimming at public pools since the closure took place. The perks of the Plunge are that the children are protected from inclement weather; the older swimmers can use the gym upstairs and it offers easy access for children with disabilities. “Three from our team made the Paralympic Games in Beijing,” Watkinds said. The team swims all over the world, except Antarctica, Watkinds said. Bryce Berggren and his wife both live in Pacific Beach and have played water polo for many years at the Plunge. “We would like to see the pool reopen,” Berggren said. The athletic pastime is one that he and his wife were able to participate in together on Tuesday nights at the Plunge. “If the city will live up to the terms of the deal that was struck, then I’d be glad to live up to my end,” Lochtefeld said.

World Curry: a world of possibilities in Pacific Beach

Dave Long of Pro Auto Care Center & Transmission commisioned several artists to brighten up the side of his shop

I’m 30 and still love PB! BY RACHEL HUTMAN I really, really love curry. My only dilemma is deciding what type of curry I want. My husband usually wants Thai, which can pose a real issue if I’m in an Indian mood. Thankfully, World Curry can satisfy both of our curry cravings in one spot. A bit of curry and a tall Sapporo and I’m in heaven. I recommend starting out your meal with the delicious garlic Naan bread, warm from the oven. A complimentary small salad is served with your meal and you will die for the dressing! It tastes like ginger and garlic and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. They offer bottles of the dressing to take home, which I usually do because it’s delectable. For dinner, the hardest part is choosing what curry dish you are in the mood for. First, you choose your curry and then you pick beef, chicken, vegetables or tofu. Every dish can be prepared as spicy as you desire. If you’re anything like me, you don’t mess around — the hotter the better! The hearty, healthy Japanese curry has big chunks of veggies and chicken or try the vegetarian favorite, Caribbean vegan curry. World Curry also offers all the traditional curries as

Finish off your yummy meal with a bowl of handmade coconut ice cream. World Curry has a funky, eclectic feel because of its garage-door windows and open floor plan. Recently remodeled, the restaurant is clean and inviting, perfect for a date night or quick bite out.

SDRC heads to Youth National Championships BY HARRISON SCHNEIDER | SPECIAL TO BEACH & BAY PRESS The San Diego Rowing Club (SDRC) will be sending the men’s varsity quad to the USRowing Youth National Championships (YNC) from June 10-12 after its boat medaled at the Southwest Junior Regional Championships (SWJRC) in March in Sacramento. This is the second consecutive year SDRC will send the men’s varsity quad (a boat with four rowers using two oars each) to the national championship in Oak Ridge, Tenn. However, this is the first time rowers Steven Goicoechea (a junior), Tim Maytom (senior), Chris Vilanilam (senior) and Luke Dillard (senior) have ever rowed at SWJRC. The four rowers easily took first in the first heat, due largely to a powerful start that catapulted the boat into an early lead, finishing with a time of 7:14.85 and qualifying for the grand final. “After we won that first heat, it kind of dawned on me that we could medal in the event,” Goicoechea said. “And that was when we all started to get really excited.” By winning the first heat, the quad secured its first-place berth in the heat and earned the four rowers a spot in Lane 2, which was partially sheltered from the strong wind on Lake Natoma. Despite the advantage, boats from Long Beach Junior Crew and Stanford High School quickly pulled ahead, leaving SDRC and the Oakland Strokes (OS) to battle it out for third. SDRC held onto a slight lead until the 1,500-meter mark, when the Oakland Strokes began to close the small gap. According to Goicochea, the SDRC rowers found a second wind when the OS caught up to them and pulled away at the last second to win third place. With a time of 6:53.99, the quad was among the top three boats in the event, consequently qualifying for the YNC. “When we pulled through that finish line, I was like, ‘Finally, I’m going to nationals,’” Dillard said. The SDRC men’s novice coxed quad (a quad with a coxswain to steer the boat) won first

place, but its season has ended because there are no novice events at YNC. Travis Webster (senior), James Lenert (senior), James Bernard (senior) and Ben Rhoda (freshman) easily pulled away from the second-place finisher and the rest of the crews with a time of 7:50.2. The women’s novice coxed quad also managed to place third, despite a technical problem in the middle of the race. About halfway through the race, Gwendolyn Willas’ (11) oar popped out of the oarlock, the apparatus that restricts the oar to a certain range of vertical

motion. The bow pair was forced to drop out to allow Willas to put the oar back in the oarlock. The quad quickly fell from second place to fourth in the estimated ten seconds that it took Willas to fix the problem. But by the 1,600-meter mark, the quad had fought its way into third place, where it finished. “Most crews, especially novices, wouldn’t be able to recover from something like that,” said women’s novice coach Kate Hoft. “To me, what they did is so much more impressive than first place.”

SDRC, which has only 84 junior rowers, medaled in those three events only. But the SDRC is already shifting its focus away from defeats and preparing for nationals and next year’s season, said Chris Callaghan, men’s varsity head coach and coaching coordinator. He said the men’s varsity quad will continue to experiment with different lineups to find the best possible rowers for YNC. MBHS cadets feted for year of focus, leadership BY JOSH SELIGMAN | BEACH & BAY PRESS

Three students at Mission Bay High School have worked hard to serve their school, city and nation. On May 21, at the 65th annual JROTC Awards Ceremony and Joint Brigade Review, Christopher Reyes, Darius Pinckney and Moises GarciaPerez were honored for their focus and leadership. Juniors Reyes and Pinckney, who will be promoted to the rank of cadet lieutenant colonel, were especially highlighted for their classroom leadership, academic excellence and volunteerism, said Brian Josten, the JROTC advisor of Mission Bay High, where over 50 cadets attend. “They push the other cadets to do their best,” Josten said. “They’ve increased the cohesion of the unit, making sure everyone’s united. They ease out any rough spots that may pop up between cadets, and they’ve found ways to bring people together instead of tear people apart.” Garcia-Perez, a senior, was recognized for being the top athlete in the San Diego Unified School District’s Joint Brigade. “[Garcia-Perez] has been leading through example,” Josten said. “He’ll go out there and push other cadets physically and mentally.” This has been a good year

for the honorees. “I’ve been able to see excellent cadets and I’ve made family,” said Reyes. One of the ways they made family was by accepting the offer to spend their spring break in Washington, D.C. and Valley Forge with six other cadets in the district, and even more from across the nation. On the trip, they shared breakfast with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and met Gen. Peter Chiarelli, vice chief of staff of the U.S. Army. “They’re both good kids and they’ve taken advantage of the opportunities they’ve been given,” Josten said. “They don’t think they know all the answers and they’re open to listening to other kids. Those are very important leadership traits they continue to develop.” Josten said that in addition to these traits, Reyes and Pinckney are focused, which is why they’ve been honored. Pinckney received the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution bronze medal, and Reyes was given the Reserve Officers Association award for superior performance. Even more, they were among nine students selected to lead all the cadets among the San Diego district’s 13 schools. Reyes will be the brigade executive officer, and his duties will include organizing communication between

schools. “I’m being given this opportunity to lead and show how much I can help others,” Reyes said. Pinckney’s position will be J-2, in charge of intelligence, support and organizing events. “This really prepares us for life,” Pinckney said. After high school, Reyes and Pinckney plan to enter the U.S. Naval Academy under the marine option. They are also applying to other colleges, where they said they intend to continue in ROTC programs. The “Mission Bay High School Institute of Teaching Excellence” is scheduled this summer for teachers, administrators and counselors at the school. Funded by the federal magnet grant that MBHS received in 2010, this professional development program will run through the summer with three two-week sessions. Broken into three strands of workshops, teachers, administrators and counselors will concentrate on technology, IB training and the pedagogy of cultural proficiency. The technology piece will train all staff not only how to use the new equipment, but how to integrate the linked laptops and promethium boards into useful tools for learning. Working in Moodle and using the core syllabus form for unit planning and storing all school work and lessons electronically are among the areas that will be taught during the technology portion of the conference. The second piece of professional development for the staff will be continuing IB training. Next year, MBHS will offer the MYP international baccalaureate program in ninth and tenth grades to bridge the gap between the IB middle years

program at PB Middle School and the IB diploma program at MBHS. The teachers will continue training in the MYP, and the content driven diploma program. The last session of training for the staff of MBHS will be a pedagogy piece in cultural proficiency, helping to close the achievement gap by looking through the cultural lens. Next year, the Mission Bay Schools will be the only cluster in San Diego County to offer the prestigious international baccalaureate program all the way through from K-12. On Friday, June 10 at 9 a.m., Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate School will promote more than 200 eighth-grade students to high school. The graduation ceremony will be held on the PB Recreation Center field. More than 70 students will be recognized with an academic distinction medal at the PBMS 2011 promotion ceremony. Pacific Beach Middle School’s sixth, seventh and eighth grade international baccalaureate students documented over 13,200 hours of service to the local and global community. The students with the most service hours documented in each grade will be awarded savings bonds from the Kiwanis Club of Pacific SEE NOTEBOOK, Page 12

Beach. The eighth-grade volunteer of the year is Jennifer Aguirre Tiempos with 201 hours. The seventhgrade volunteer of the year is Hannah Bloom with 260 hours, and top sixth-grade volunteer is Pauline Hales-Brown. PB Middle IB service activities included working with seniors at Wesley Palms, planting the new PB Middle School garden, designing healthy meals and delivering dinners to the Storefront Teen Shelter, organizing beach cleanups at our adopted beach, planning a food drive, working with Meals on Wheels and other activities. PBMS international baccalaureate students are inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful

world through intercultural understanding and respect. The Pacific Beach Middle School “mathletes” competed in Math Field Day at Francis Parker Middle School on May 21. There were 33 middle schools participating from around San Diego County in 12 different events. Pacific Beach Middle School students earned ribbons or medals in six of the ten events they entered. Winners include Shilo Clarke (first place, sixth grade, 24), Hannah Bloom and Anika Trout (third place, Win/Lose/Draw), Miguel Acosta and Jacob Cayetano (sixth place, Dynamic Duo), Katia Kappele (seventh place, Math Wits), John Powell (seventh place, Equate), Lauren Tomasi (ninth place, seventh grade, 24). This was another extraordinary showing for the math students of Pacific Beach Middle School. — Jennifer Tandy

is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
