Discover PB looks to tourism to bolster summer business BY ANTHONY GENTILE | BEACH & BAY PRESS As temperatures start to rise in Pacific Beach, more and more tourists will flock to the area. Discover PB is hoping the summer will bring local businesses a boost. “Summertime is a time where businesses are really focused on tourists and trying to make the most of the busy tourist season,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the area’s business improvement district. “We’re hoping for better things this season and what we’re hearing, at least from the hotel side, is that things are picking up.” With Discover PB’s major events happening in the fall, the organization is counting on the sunshine to bring more business to PB. During the summer, Discover PB will promote the area heavily.
“Our focus in the summer is to really work to promote all that’s already happening down here — doing our best to promote the summer destination that PB is and focus on the great beaches, hotels, retailers and bars that we have here,” Hanshaw said. Before the sun sets on summer 2010, Discover PB will host two local events, in addition to a potential sidewalk sale. On Aug. 15, “Charger Steve’s” Wild Rides and Classic Car Showdown will come to Garnet Avenue, an event that will be free to the public. “The promoter of an established car show is going to be on Garnet Avenue with classic beach and movie cars,” Hanshaw said. “It’s going to be a fun car show and peoSEE DISCOVER, Page 5
A real-time account of beach cruising bliss BY HILLARY SCHULER JONES | BEACH & BAY PRESS
Beach cruisers are a prominent part of the landscape in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, serving as icons of the area’s laid-back atmosphere and playful vibe. However, if you are like this intrepid reporter, you may have long ago parked your bike in favor of a sensible sedan – and in the process, lost touch with the quirky qualities that make this community such a great place to live. So, I decided to ditch my Camry and try cruising the boardwalk for a new perspective. The following are my observations:

Fiesta Island development plan strives for multi-use
11 a.m.: It is a bright sunny day, one of the first we have had after a dismal bout of June Gloom and July Drizzle. I head toward the beach on foot, basking in the sunshine. 11:01: I narrowly avoid being hit by an unwieldy cruiser. She apologizes and wobbles away. Mental note: learn how to apply the brake before entering a crowded area.

11:03: A Jeep full of college-aged boys drives by blasting Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” on the radio, just as I walk between the bright yellow façade of Roberto’s Taco Shop and the whirring, clacking thrill ride that is the Giant Dipper. Mood set. 11:08: I arrive at Wavehouse, where I will rent my trusty steed. A mother-son duo is arguing with each other and the attendants about whether to take on the Waverider. 11:18: After a barrage of questions and lengthy deliberation, the mom agrees to sign Timmy’s life away. I fill out a similar form admitting that I am risking life and limb, hand over my $10 and jump on the rusty trusty bike. 11:20: I decide to head north on the boardwalk, but before I can get momentum, I have another near accident, this time with two young girls on a tandem bike, who fell over in my immediate path. Amateurs. 11:25: I witness a girl on a bike doing her best to steer with one hand while talking on a cell phone. Listen to Oprah: no talking while driving. 11:28: I am on the lookout for some of the people I have seen in this area in the past — namely, the bongo-playing recluse and the man who does pilates on the beach wall. But I get distracted when a man wearing a black trucker hat, a

plain white T-shirt and low-riding black shorts glides by me. I swear it was Kevin Federline. 11:34: I start playing “Guess The Tourist” and discover a dead giveaway — the majority are wearing tennis shoes with calf-high socks. To the beach. In the middle of summer. Locals wear flip-flops, period. 11:41: I see a swarm of junior lifeguards in their bright red and yellow outfits. There aren’t too many places where kids spend summer vacation learning how to save lives. 11:46: I reach Lahaina Beach House. It is jam-packed, as usual. 11:50: After Lahaina, the boardwalk narrows to an almost unmanageable width, and I encounter my first “man-pack.” This is a group of at least four dudes walking side-by-side, creating an effective barricade against all the traffic behind them. Havoc ensues. 11:52: I reach Kona’s and try to turn around in a thick crowd. 11:58: I get back to a crowd-free area and decide to see what my bike is made of, cranking it to top speed. There are no walls with family pictures, no picket fences and no kitchen tables where families share meals. Yet to many, Fiesta Island is home. The unkempt territory enables park patrons to relinquish themselves to activities that involve dedication, time and energy. Fiesta Island is more than a city park operated under the San Diego Park and Recreation Department. To some, it is a place where cyclists ride bicycles, dog owners run or walk in the sand with their dogs off-leash and paddlers can launch their boats on calm waters. That was the sentiment from community members who spoke to the board members of the Mission Bay Park Committee (MBPC) at its monthly meeting July 6. Mike Singleton, project manager for the Fiesta Island Development Plan, presented the most recent version to MBPC board members at the public meeting. The presentation served only as an informational agenda item, but public comment followed the presentation. “It was supposed to be a two-year
project,” Singleton said. He believes the new plan is a positive one because of the public input he has received since the project was announced in 2005. The initial plan set aside no acreage for off-leash dog use, the two-lane road originally suggested was dangerous to cyclists and the landscaping was not in keeping with the natural state of the island that so many patrons appreciate. Since the Park and Recreation Department announced a plan to redevelop the island in accordance with the Mission Bay Park Master Plan, a number of dog owners are no longer without a voice. They are now part of the Fiesta Island Dog Owners (FIDO) nonprofit organization. Cyclists and triathletes who train on Fiesta Island have shared safety concerns about the traffic flow at the park. Paddling groups such as Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club and San Diego Dragon Boat Club are also working together to acquire a secure and safe space from which to launch their boats. SEE FIESTA, Page 5

Bayfair racing will return without unlimited hydroplanes again BY JOHNNY MCDONALD | BEACH & BAY PRESS Bayfair racing officials are banking on the strong-running G-boats and the unlimited lights class to generate the excitement once commanded by the traditional unlimited hydroplanes for September’s versatile boating “World Series” races on Mission Bay. Once again, it will be three days of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. action on Mission Bay, scheduled for Sept. 17-19 this year. For the second year, the turbine-powered unlimiteds will not return for lack of a sponsor and a price tag that was too great for the festival’s board of governors. Additionally, the drag boats that performed off Crown Point have elected to race at Lake Elsinore instead. Board Chairman Jeff Thomas said the program will be exactly what it was last year without the drag boats. The event will include the long-hulled offshore boats, grand nationals, cracker boxes, super stocks and a variety of other classes. “I think last year’s races were the best I’ve seen in a long time,” said Thomas, who’s been a part of the Mission Bay festival for 30 years. “There’s no major sponsor, at least not one I can say yet. “We walked around the crowd last year and asked what they liked out there. They agreed that the unlimiteds’ rooster tails are spectacular but they prefer more noise, the type piston engines provide.” There is sentiment that the G-boats might be the answer and officials feel unlimited lights will provide closer competition. “The G-boats run around 1,100 to 1,200 horsepower and they put on a

good race.” Thomas said. “The unlimiteds haven’t progressed and when they would arrive here, their hulls were scarred,” Thomas said. “Personally, I think they made a mistake by going to turbines. Technology for piston engines has increased remarkably. We want to bring racing back to what people understand.” Thomas said the door is always open to the unlimiteds if they want to negotiate. The sanctioning organization, H1 Hydroplanes, has had its share of scheduling headaches. The traditional Detroit Gold Cup (July 9-11) was saved by a last minute sponsorship by a restoration company. Seattle’s SeaFair (Aug. 6-9) will survive because a restaurant came up with $40,000. However, the long-standing Evansville, Ind., races have been canceled. Previously, Budweiser offered the national sponsor base. Other national sponsors became partners in the programs, including Coors, Miller and Atlas Van Lines. That is what helped pay for the unlimiteds to be in San Diego in the past.

MBAC keeping beaches clean with new summer project BY ANTHONY GENTILE | BEACH & BAY PRESS At Mission Bay Aquatic Center (MBAC), counselors-intraining — that is, students who help counselors and campers alike during summer camps — are referred to as CITs. But this year, that acronym could also stand for caretakers-in-training, as the 80 young adults in the program are participating in afternoon beach cleanups four days a week. “It’s important to keep the beaches clean because people are going to hang out there and we don’t want them to get sick or get infections if they get cut,” said counselor-in-training Eli Graham. “I want the generations after us to be able to hang out in the bay and not be scared.” Project CIT, the regular beach cleanups at Santa Clara Point, started at the beginning of July and will continue through the end of August. MBAC is working alongside San Diego Coastkeeper, making the efforts of the prospective counselors both educational and scientifically significant. “They gave us beach cleanup kits and each day we weigh how much trash we’ve collected,” said MBAC volunteer Tara Kelly. “They’re going to be using that data for some of the research they’re doing. It’s cool to be part of that program as well.” After helping morning campers, 10 of the trainees rotate each day through the beach cleanups. Among the lighter aspects of the work is the “Found Items Board,” where odd trash — including tires and rusty nails — is immortalized in writing on a board at MBAC. “Every day it’s a new group of kids,” said MBAC programs manager Kevin Waldick. “Some kids do it multiple times a week but for the most part it’s a new group of kids every day.” When not picking up trash, the counselors-in-training assist watersports camp counselors in a variety of ways.
Members of the Mission Bay Aquatic Center’s counselors-intraining program hit the beach to sweep, rake and provide genCOURTESY PHOTOS eral cleanup duty four afternoons each week.
They also serve as safety observers in wakeboarding boats and give afternoon sailing rides to kids. “It’s teaching you how to become a leader in your everyday life,” Trubitt said. “It really gives you something that I don’t think kids have a lot these days — hard work and not messing around.” For MBAC, the cleanups keep their young volunteers busy and keep consistent with other environmentallyfriendly actions. MBAC’s facility is completely solar-powered and MBAC promotes recycling. “We were looking for ways to better serve our community,” Waldick said. “It just made sense that we could get these guys working to better the community and have a sense of accomplishment through keeping the beach clean and the water clean.” Mission Bay Aquatic Center is located at 1001 Santa Clara Place in Mission Beach. Smaller crowd at July 17 Floatopia proves less burden for lifeguards An estimated crowd of 1,400 floaters took to Sail Bay for Floatopia on Saturday, July 17. Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said the relatively small turnout made the floating party manageable. “It wasn’t as big as people anticipated,” Lerum said. Of the 1,400 total, Lerum estimated that approximately 400 were floating at any given time. Eight city lifeguards staffed the event on the sand and in the water, in
addition to two rescue boats and lifeguards on Jet Skis monitoring the event. Lerum said lifeguards made a total of four medical aids and four rescues during the event. “Lifeguards and police both took a proactive approach to engage with people throughout the event and get their compliance with just being responsible, and that went a long way,” Lerum said. — Anthony Gentile

U.K. children’s choirs to resonate in PB BY DEBBIE HATCH | BEACH & BAY PRESS On the southeast side of the United Kingdom is a waterfront town where 38 children have been practicing for nine months to visit the United States with their boys’ and girls’ choirs to give a world-renowned concert performance in several California locations. The Southend Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs will launch their 2010 U.S. tour at Christ Lutheran Church in Pacific Beach at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 27 at 4761 Cass St. The event is free. While the two choirs operate separately, they will join together for a U.S. tour that was planned two years ago. Of the 150 children, ages 8-19, only 38 young singers will travel here. Their ages range from 12 to 19. The choir has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the City of London Sinfonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and many others. They also have many highly-acclaimed recordings. Rosemary Pennington will accompany the choir and noted the groups are looking forward to singing in some lovely churches and cathedrals, making new friends with their hosts, and seeing some of the wonderful sights and beaches of California. “astonishingly polished” and “hauntingly beautiful” said Paula Mowbray, the new music director at Christ Lutheran Church. Mowbray is a singer, choral conductor, organist and pianist. She will briefly perform with the choir. The church, which has been in the community for 60 years, was chosen as the location for the concert because its acoustics are of such high quality. This will be the choir’s third U.S tour. In 2004, the boys and girls toured New York, Chicago and Cleveland. They also toured throughout Florida in 2006. “We have a very wide range of repertoire, both sacred and secular, to suit
our various performances, but we have learned one song in particular for this tour,” Pennington said. The song is “Route 66.” The groups are bringing their own organist and pianist with them. “We know this will help fill a tremendous need for local programs that introduce young children to music,” Mowbray said. “The engaging program, which emphasizes vocal and musical skill development and rhythmic concepts, has universal appeal and can set the foundation for a life-long love of music.” Fo r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n , v i s i t www.christpb.org.

One of the few problems remaining is that the boathouse for the various paddling groups is located where FIDO would prefer to have a leash-free dog area. At this month’s meeting, each of these groups acknowledged the importance of other groups’ rights to space on the island, but each is also actively trying to maintain their own ability to utilize the island. One major dilemma for area paddlers is the need to have access to a 1,000-meter stretch of water in order to host competitions. This puts them on the southwest corner in the midst of off leash-dog use area. Alise Shatoff, a FIDO board member, gave a presentation on behalf of the organization that formed in 2005 as a response to the proposed plan. “Currently, over 40 percent of all households have at least one dog and there are over 700,000 dogs living in San Diego County,” Shatoff said. Sean Pangelinan, a senior at San
Craft Beer Garden. “We want to continue to make it the premier festival at the beach,” Hanshaw. “As our premier event, we need to make sure that’s successful.” Looking toward the end of 2010, Hanshaw said he would like to see the holiday parade come back to PB, something that businesses in the local hospitality industry are wanting. As for Discover PB’s goals to close out the year, the organization aims to bring new businesses to the area. “Our organizational goal is to continue to help our businesses attract more business and do what we can to bring in new businesses,” Hanshaw said.
Diego State University, is a member of the Kai Elua Outrigger Club. “Outrigger canoeing is not a sport where you win medals and bragging rights,” Pangelinan said. “We teach the youth. We teach them respect, teamwork, hard work, perseverance, culture and history.” The cyclists, FIDO and the paddlers commended Singleton for his sustained efforts over the previous five years. Singleton pointed out the most significant changes to the plans since 2005. These consisted of maintaining a one-way road, the dropping of the jet ski ramp and parking, the addition of a campground catering to day-use, but will be available for overnight use. Sand volleyball courts were also added, the landscaping was toned down to save the natural state, and a left-hand turn lane will be added to help traffic exit the park. Now, the plan will be studied by the MBPC and remains open to public input. The committee did not expect to approve or deny the plans until fall. It will be approximately 8 to 12 months before the plan goes before the San Diego Park and Recreation for approval.

Furry friends make great reading companions BY SHANNON MULHALL | BEACH & BAY PRESS Wagging Tales, a program offered at area libraries, including the Pacific Beach-Earl and Birdie Taylor Library, 4275 Cass St., is designed to help children get comfortable with reading out loud by providing them with a patient, nonjudgmental audience — dogs. “Children are interested in and like dogs,” said Michelle Clark, youth services librarian at the Taylor Library. “They don’t have to be worried about parents and teachers correcting them. It’s not as intimidating.” Though the program is open to any children who want to participate, the dogs are carefully selected. “Not just any dog can come in,” Clark said. The canine audience consists of certified trained therapy dogs that are patient and relaxed in public settings. “They’re the cream of the crop and their handlers are, too,” Clark said. Children can share their stories with such breeds as golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers and Great Danes. One to four dogs are available to listen at each monthly Wagging Tales program. If there is a wait, a child can read for roughly 10 minutes. Otherwise, readers are welcome to practice as long as they like. The combination of dogs, reading and the library create a unique learning experience for children. “It’s a fun environment, unlike school, which isn’t necessarily fun,” Clark said, adding Wagging Tales is also less structured than school. “There are no strict rules. The book they read doesn’t have to be a school book. It can be anything they’re interested in and want to read.” In addition to helping young readers become more confident, the program also helps children become familiar with the library, Clark said.
Trained therapy dogs are patient listeners when children practice their reading skills in the Wagging Tales program, held the first Saturday of every month at the Pacific COURTESY PHOTO Beach-Taylor Library.
“It becomes an environment for literacy and learning,” she said. Since the program is run entirely by volunteers, it has not been affected by recent budget cuts. “We’re very grateful for our very ded-
icated volunteers,” Clark said. Wagging Tales takes place at the Taylor Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the first Saturday of every month. For more information, call (858) 581-9934 or visit www.sandiego.gov/public-library.

Now& Then John Fry TRUNCATED DOMES are gonna be the death of me. You think you don’t know what I’m talking about, but you see them every day — and they’ve just installed a section as part of the Albertson’s remodel. I’m talking about the yellow rubber mats with bumps on them on every handicapped ramp and store entrance. They’re supposed to be a godsend for the visually impaired, but I just keep tripping on them. THINK OF A REASON TO CALL MCAS MIRAMAR and then ask to be put on hold. You get to listen to John Phillips Sousa, which is a heckuva lot better than the techno screech the Apple Store plays. OVERHEARD AT THE BAR at Good Time Charlie’s: “You can’t bring a dog in here.” “It’s a service dog.” “Why do you need a service dog?” “I have a bad liver.” SPEAKING OF GOOD TIME CHARLIE’S, you must stop in and say “Hi” to new waitress Mary. A resident of Gulf Shores, Ala., the 22-year-old lost her job two weeks ago thanks to the BP oil spill. Obviously, she didn’t let any grass grow under her feet. She went online and secured an apartment at the Avalon, then hopped on a plane. A neighbor told her Charlie’s was hiring and the rest is history. She reminds me some of Little Orphan Annie, but most folks agree she looks like Bernadette Peters. FINALLY — A DREAM FULFILLED. I was leaving brunch at Green Flash last week when I noticed hostess Marissa perched on her stool reading the Beach & Bay Press. I pointed to my photo and said, “This guy is REALLY good!!” She wasn’t buying it — even (or especially) after she made the connection. I GET THE L.A. TIMES AND THE UNIONTRIBUNE. Reggie Dublin makes sure they’re bound together with plenty of green rubber bands, some of which occasionally work their way off. PBTC president concerned over fundraising dilemma
Find DAILY NEWS UPDATES at www.sdnews.com
BY DEBBIE HATCH | BEACH & BAY PRESS The Pacific Beach Town Council’s (PBTC) ninth annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction held Sunday, June 27 at Lotsa Pasta in Pacific Beach raised nearly $6,000 less than the previous year. PBTC President Rose Galliher is saddened by the low turnout for the event that acts as one of the largest fundraisers for the group. Last year, $8,312 was raised while about $2,600 was raised this year. The PBTC used the funds raised last year to help support the new mural project at Mission Bay High School, the holiday parade and the library. The PBTC was also able to give Marlee Glasgow, 2010 valedictorian of Mission Bay High School, a $500 scholarship. Galliher noted that each year the money
from the event is invested back into the community and it helps cover office and insurance expenses of the PBTC. Only 59 tickets were sold this year compared to the 99 sold in 2009. This affected the amount raised by the silent auction and the raffle tickets. The board of the PBTC will discuss how the limited funds will be used in the coming year. Support from local businesses was also down, said Galliher, who fears that the low turnout is a sign that the public’s perception of the PBTC has been degraded over the recent controversy regarding the council lending its support to a deck expansion at the Pacific Beach Shore Club. PB Surf Shop hosting green skate event BY ANTHONY GENTILE | BEACH & BAY PRESS In keeping with its green theme, Pacific Beach Surf Shop is holding a skateboard launch party for environmentally-friendly company BambooSk8 tonight, July 22. The free event starts at 7 p.m. “We chose PB Surf Shop because it has a green room for green projects in it and the owner is very eco-conscious,” said BambooSk8 owner Geoff Koboldt. The party will launch BambooSk8’s new Octobomb short and longboard decks, which Koboldt said is influenced more by surfboard shapes than skate shapes. All of the three-year-old Oceanside company’s boards are green, starting with decks that are made primarily with bamboo. “The skateboard industry is known for using traditional maple, with skateboarding contributing largely to the deforestation of maple trees,” Koboldt said. “By using bamboo, a resource in abundance and with a growth rate of 2 to 3 feet [per day], the yield is 100-fold and with less of an impact on the Earth.” The launch part itself also has a green theme. Almost all the proceeds from the event will be donated to the National Wildlife Federation to help with relief efforts in the Gulf Coast.
Up & out
“I have a personal friend who lives in New Orleans who had informed me of the devastation way before the media got there,” Koboldt said. “Hearing her words and seeing photos just makes us want to compassionately help those animals and people who will be affected for tens of years due to this unfortunate and preventable tragedy.” The skate party is the second green event PB Surf Shop has hosted five days. On July 17, the shop hosted a fundraiser featuring Glenn Hening, one of the founders of the Surfrider Foundation, who shared his story about how the foundation got started. Proceeds from the fundraiser went toward paying for surf lessons for underprivileged students at UCSD’s The Preuss School. With chain stores offering everything from groceries and gas to knobs and knick-knacks, Open Door Books is making a big impression by keeping it small. “We feel we have a unique bookstore,” said Mary Alice Mueller, a manager and co-founder of Open Door Books, 4761 Cass St., Pacific Beach residents seem to agree, naming it Best Bookstore in the Beach & Bay Press 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards. (Votes are currently being tallied for the 2010 awards.) Literally building on its success, Open Door Books has recently undergone a renovation. “We felt it was time to get with the new world,” Mueller laughed. The revamped environment includes new carpeting and a warmer, more dynamic color palette of oranges and corals. Bookcases were also removed to make the store feel more spacious and welcoming. “It was a time for a change to get modernized,” Mueller said. “We’ve tried to make it more inviting to encourage more local and young people to come in.” To engage and serve visitors, the bookstore is home to a monthly poetry group, as well as various book groups and readings. In the first reading since the remodel, Cmdr. Sheri Snively of San Diego recently discussed her book, “Heaven in the Midst of Hell,” which describes her experiences as a U.S. Navy chaplain in Iraq. Past author events have included Bishop John Shelby Spong, a Christian theologian and writer, and Michael Morwood, a former Catholic priest. “We’re a place for people who want to do a little exploring about their life and religion,” Mueller said. “We encourage

thinking people.” While working together at a Christian service agency, Mueller and Open Door Books co-founder Pat Guest envisioned a bookstore that included and welcomed all faiths. Open Door is adjacent to Christ Lutheran Church but is nondenominational. “We don’t feature any one particular religion but all of them,” Mueller said. Though the store offers a wide assortment of spiritual books, readers can also find the latest bestsellers there. “We’re small so you can find it much easier,” Mueller said. In addition to variety and religious neutrality, Open Door is committed to focusing on local authors and artists. Visitors to the bookstore may not only leave with books, but original art, too. The bookstore is currently featuring the paintings of San Diego artist Midge Hyde. “Her work is very eclectic,” Mueller said. While Mueller and her fellow managers Cyndi Rollefson and Carolyn Lief are committed to serving the local com-
munity, they also have a broader purpose. “Our mission is to help others,” Mueller said. The nonprofit bookstore is run by volunteers and features gifts created by individuals living in impoverished countries. In addition to fair trade coffee, Open Door offers crafts and art from Exotic World Gifts, including paintings created by elephants. Organic, fairly-traded gourmet chocolate from Equal Exchange, which supports small-scale farmers in such regions as the Dominican Republic, Panama and Madagascar, also is available. The bookstore also features soup mixes and other products from the Tomorrow Project, an organization that assists women in transition. A portion of proceeds go to SERVE, an international group that provides relief to struggling individuals and communities. Il Padrino brings East Coast pizza to PB BY ANTHONY GENTILE | BEACH & BAY PRESS For the last two months, il Padrino has given PB a slice of the East Coast. The Italian restaurant and gourmet pizzeria opened on Hornblend Street in May. “It goes back to very old-school traditional Italian food, whether it’s the meatballs that are an old recipe from Italy or the ingredients in the pizza sauce which have been passed down for generations,” said owner Sam Calvanese. A Massachusetts native, Calvanese longed for an East Coast slice of pie while living in the area for the past few years. Finally, he and friend Sven Zabka, a New York native, decided to take matters into their own hands — and il Padrino was born. “We found that, generally speaking, San Diego has sub-par pizza,” Calvanese said. “After four years of eating pizza that we never really enjoyed, we thought ‘Why not go into business together and shake things up a little bit?’” The pizza at il Padrino starts with the ingredients, which have an East Coast flair. Pies are topped with homemade sauce and Grande cheese, a Wisconsinbased brand that Calvanese said is prevalent back east and exclusive to il Padrino in the Pacific Beach area. “It’s the highest quality cheese that is in the cheese market throughout the whole country,” Calvanese said. “You pay a premium for this cheese, but it cooks better, it melts better, it tastes better and it also reheats better when you reheat the pizza the next day or a few hours later.” Il Padrino offers many different types of pizza, from traditional pepperoni to the not-so-traditional. The latter pizzas include alfredo-style, chicken parmesan, buffalo chicken and a French-fry pizza with chili and cheddar cheese. “We have a very creative menu,” Cal-

vanese said. “We have 30-plus signature pizzas that are different from your traditional East Coast red pizza.” Another unique pie at il Padrino is the nacho pizza with steak, chicken or hamburger and fajita pizza. Those pizzas are the focus of il Padrino’s “Taco Pizza Tuesdays,” with two-for-one slices and beers. “We’re trying to take away from Taco Tuesday and have people try a slice of taco pizza instead,” Calvanese said. Non-pizza menu items Calvanese recommends trying are the meatballs, made from an Italian family recipe.

“It’s an old-school recipe from my grandmother who is from southern Italy, and the meatballs are all homemade here,” Calvanese said. “Everybody who has the meatball sandwich just falls in love with it.” As for the name, which means “The Godfather” in Italian, it actually has nothing to do with the legendary film series. Calvanese said he chose the name because it implies a sense of family and warmth, along with superiority when it comes to pizza. “It’s a very traditional, old-school word,” Calvanese said.

Pacifico vintage bus rolls through beach area BY ANTHONY GENTILE | BEACH & BAY PRESS Through the end of the month, local beer enthusiasts can hitch a free weekend ride to and from downtown on a Pacifico vintage bus. The shuttle coincides with the launch of Pacifico on draft in San Diego and other areas of California in May. “There’s a lot of curiosity and a lot of positive feedback on it,” said John Nichols, brand manger for Pacifico’s U.S. importer, Crown Imports. “It’s a fun way for people to meet new people and get to know a little bit about the brand and get from one area to another safely.” The 21-and-up bus, decked out in blue and yellow and outfitted with old surfboards and retro TVs inside, runs from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights through the end of July. Its route is a 45-minute loop between downtown, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, stopping near area watering holes that feature Pacifico. “It’s about having fun and going out, and that’s very much what those two communities are about,” Nichols said. “We just thought it was a fun way to get people to go from one area to another and we thought the lifestyles were very similar to the way we think Pacifico comes to life.” In Mission Beach, the shuttle stops near Belmont Park, at Mission Boule-
vard and Ventura Place. There are stops in PB at Mission Boulevard and Thomas Avenue, and Garnet Avenue and Haines Avenue, and two stops downtown in the Gaslamp Quarter. Local comedian Mal Hall will be onboard to emcee the ride. “That’s something we really like about this brand — it’s just a very nonpretentious, off-the-beaten-path brand,” Nichols said. “We’re really just trying to capture that laid-back, coastal beach lifestyle.” San Diego is the first stop for the Pacifico bus and the primary focus of Crown Imports’ initial marketing for the brand. Nichols said San Diego has always been one of Pacifico’s biggest markets. “The origin of the brand goes back to when Southern Californians and a lot of San Diego folks headed down to Baja and were really just looking for new beaches to surf,” Nichols said. First brewed in 1900, Pacifico has been on draft for the last two months in San Diego and is on tap at a number of local bars. The business aim of the shuttle bus is to promote Pacifico on tap. “A lot of people try beer through draft,” Nichols said. “It’s a good way to share Pacifico with a broader group of people and hopefully bring more people into the Pacifico family.” For more information about Pacifico or the free shuttle bus, visit www.pacificobusroute.com.
The proliferation of country music acts in San Diego seems to be picking up steam. Tellingly, the majority of the local country performers seem to be looking toward the genre’s pre-1970’s heyday for inspiration. One of the top such groups performing locally is The Palominos, appearing Sunday, July 25 at Concerts on the Green. The band looks and sounds like it could have backed Buck Owens sometime around 1965. Whether you are a country traditionalist or simply like wellplayed uptempo danceable tunes, The Palominos set will be a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Free. www.pbconcerts or www.myspace.compalominosband The quarterly Acoustic Alliance show, taking place on Sunday, July 25 at Brick By Brick, continues to be the best way to take in a large amount of local talent in one go. A dozen performers will take the stage in shifts of four, playing round-robin style. Even with so much talent on stage, the clear standout this time will be Dave Howard. His songs have shown up on albums by over a dozen artists, including AJ Croce, Gregory Page and Citizen Band, but there is nothing like hearing music performed by the tunesmith who
www.myspace.com/thefloundersband While the passing of Jerry Garcia in 1995 brought an end to the Grateful Dead, the band’s surviving members continue to tour, giving Deadheads a chance to relive a little of the band’s magic. The Rhythm Devils, who perform at the Wavehouse on Thursday, July 29, feature Grateful Dead percussionists Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The band is an offshoot of the Dead’s inconcert drum-jam sessions, but is probably best known for its soundtrack work on the film classic “Apocalypse Now.” Deadheads will considDave Howard will highlight the Acoustic er attendance at this show Alliance show Sunday, July 25 at Brick mandatory, but if you like music COURTESY PHOTO with a heavy rhythmic edge and a By Brick. lot of jamming, this is for you. created it. A trio helmed by brothers Louie and Mike Shook, they play a fun mix of covers by the likes of the Police and the Eagles. However, their best material is their own, such as the bossa-nova flavored “Flounder All Day.” More than just a bar band cranking out songs, The Flounders’ sense of humor and music selections make them a band well worth experiencing live. The Flounders: Wednesday, July 28, 9 p.m. at The Tiki House, 1152 Garnet Ave. Cover TBD. 21 and up.
The Sundoctors, who perform at the 710 Beach Club on Saturday, July 31, may technically be a rock band, but they lean heavily into dance territory. With more than a hint of soul in tunes like “Mess I Made” and electronica stompers like “Final Destination,” the group covers its bases well. While the Sundoctors concentrate on original material, they do occasionally drop a surprise tune into their set such as Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” However, its own material is strong enough to keep the dance floor filled. Crystal Pier fishing derby set to lure kids in BY AMBERLY DRESSLER | BEACH & BAY PRESS
Youngsters will get the chance to practice their fishing skills July 31 at the Crystal Pier COURTESY PHOTO Kids Classic Fishing Derby.
SPORTSbriefs
Hundreds of kids will cast a line on Saturday, July 31 as part of the third annual Crystal Pier Kids Classic Fishing Derby. The free, family-friendly event offers children under 15 the opportunity to use free bait, free tackle, loaner rods, and hook catch-andrelease tournament prizes. Organizers hope children of all skills levels will turn out to get a bite. Plenty of volunteers will be on deck to help families get a line in the water. “You find all kinds, dads who have never fished or some 7-year-old who can tie knots and is pretty knowledgeable,” said Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) director Joe Wilding . “It’s just really friendly. Kids are just having fun. It’s all about the fishing. I’m really glad to see it happen in PB.” Participants also won’t leave emptyhanded.
“It’s a great event for the community of PB. They like to do it, and for that day there is a smile on every kid’s face — and that’s what it’s all about.” Capt. Ron Baker Creater of Fish Talk Radio “There will be a lot of free stuff,” Wilding said. “First of all, fish tacos. More than you can eat. Sponsors give away rods and reels, bicycles. It’s unbelievable. Just show up. Besides, some of the best stories are fish stories.” The fishing derby was a brainchild of Wilding, charged to create something in PB that didn’t involve alcohol consumption. Enter Capt. Ron Baker. Baker, who has organized the Lake Poway Youth Derby for the past 15
years and started Fish Talk Radio, was approached with the idea of another tourney. Baker agreed, but he wanted to do it at Crystal Pier because it’s one of the last old wood piers. The event reaped the benefits of fully-funded grants its first two years. In its third year, money ran out and hometown people and businesses stepped up. Among local sponsors are the PBTC, the Pacific Beach Woman’s Club, the San Diego Padres and the Crystal Pier Hotel & Cottages. “It’s not about how much money it takes. It’s about making sure there are no loose ends,” Baker said. “It’s a great event for the community of PB. They like to do it and for that day there is a smile on every kid’s face — and that’s what it’s all about.”

“Take a kid fishing,” has been a tagline for Baker for more than a decade. Another one he’s borrowed over the years is, “Teach your kid to fish and you don’t have to fish for your kid.” “Everyone has a story of a dad or grandpa taking them fishing,” Baker said. “I want to keep that going. I’ve introduced 8,000 to 9,000 kids to fishing in the last 15 years.” Baker says the thing that keeps kids fishing is results. There were plenty of fish reeled in last year. One young lady caught 24 fish alone. Gates open at 8:30 a.m., but with no pre-registration, fishers are encouraged to show up early. Mark Mitchell’s architectural firm is in Pacific Beach, but more importantly he lives, breathes and works in the coastal community. “We were doing green before it was ‘green,’” he said. This business community advocate might be found walking to grab lunch down Mission Boulevard or working on his new project development in La Jolla. Living and breathing in the area he designs, Mitchell’s ideas flourish with each new project he undertakes. “I just love being able to walk, live and work in the community,” he said in his Mission Boulevard office. Just two blocks from home, Mitchell walks to work in the neighborhood he plans to improve. A San Diego resident since 1981, Mitchell opened Mark Mitchell Architecture and Planning in 1990 and moved the company to Pacific Beach 2 1/2 years ago. Besides improving the community aesthetic with his designs, Mitchell is a Discover Pacific Beach board member, Pacific Beach Town Council member and a former Pacific Beach Community Planning Group board member. “I would like to see PB become more polished,” he said. “I’d like to get something moving forward to get PB a nicer area. Not that it’s really bad, it just has some rough edges.” Apart from his efforts to clean up Garnet Avenue, Mitchell has improved many places of San Diego County with his innovative designs, from additions to commercial and residential home remodels. His repertoire includes sleek modern properties in Mission Bay and comfortable spaces in Borrego Springs. “What’s fun for me is to do a lot of different styles; I like to mix it up,” he said, labeling his style “contemporary with a Spanish flair.” With an expert team of consultants on his side, working with Mitchell is often eye-opening for clients, especially since he can take projects 3-D. Few other architectural firms in the area can give potential clients a 3-D view of a remodel or addition like Mitchell can, he said. The unusually modern format “that our clients love” allows them to see “a living model where changes can be made on the fly,“ he said. From his computer, a window or doorframe can shift positions with just a click of the mouse. Since opening his business in 1990, Mitchell has noticed only one constant when proposing new developments.
MARK MITCHELL ARCHITECTURE & PLANNING 4747 Mission Blvd., Suite #6 (858) 274-5978 http://mmarchitect.com/ Mark Mitchell Architecture & Planning has produced contemporary designs throughout the beach communities as well as throughout COURTESY PHOTO the county.
“It is never the same,” he laughed. “Getting through the bureaucracies, they just seem to be getting more complex.” Even so, Mitchell claims it is “the best time to build.” With building supply costs down and consultants more competitive than ever, construction today can be simple. One way to reduce the bill is to conserve. With the hype surrounding green building, living with the environment in mind reduces costs. “Conservation is the most important part about being green,” Mitchell said. A skilled green builder who lives consciously in a threestory home off Law Street, the architect had a handle on ecofriendly construction decades ago.
An outdoor living room with Saddleback BY MEAGHAN CLARK | BEACH & BAY PRESS In a city defined by sunshine, Saddleback of San Diego makes living outdoors easy. A local retailer for more than 40 years, Saddleback of San Diego is currently owned by national chain Carls Patio West. Former owners Tony and Donna Stevens sold the company in 2005 to the national merchant wholesalers, enabling the San Diego establishment to double in size and become This Woodard Andover aluminum cushion one of the biggest patio suppliers in patio lounge set is an example of the stylish the nation. Well-versed in manufacturing outoutdoor furniture that transforms any patio area COURTESY PHOTO door furniture, Saddleback of San into an extension of the home.
Diego’s buyers are the key to the company’s success, said spokesman Lyle Ecoff. “Our buying team has a combined 100 years of experience, [and] our sales staff are highly trained because they have so much more they have to know to be effective,” he said. When the living room comes with an ocean breeze and salty air, modular sectionals are ideal, Ecoff said. “They allow our customer to place our furniture in any sized outdoor area,” he said. Other ocean-friendly options include the powder-coated, painted aluminum and sling furniture. Today, San Diegans have come to welcome the patio as an extension of their home. “We study current and past design trends in furniture, fixtures [and] clothing for inspiration,” Ecoff said. “We require our factories to use the latest technologies for raw materials so our furniture will withstand our weather and look beautiful for years and years.” Though drastic weather in San Diego is rare, a favorite among locals with an ocean view is weather proof wicker. With patio trends that have made the exterior just as stylish as the interior, new designs feature “stronger colors in fabrics, cushion and umbrellas,” Ecoff said. Comfortable patio furniture is a necessity with summer weather year round. “The entire industry continues to evolve,” Ecoff said. “We now rival the style and design that the indoor furniture industry enjoys.” Visit Saddleback of San Diego at 7371 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. The phone number is (858) 292-7385.
