HURRICANE HEROES

By DAVE SCHWAB Miller's Field in Pacific Beach, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary in March by revamping its menu, has closed. In place of the quintessential sports bar, which billed itself as “American fare with San Diego beach flair,” will be Breakfast Republic, a fast-growing chain owned by Now, Rise and Shine Restaurant Group, founded by Johan Engman. Pacific Beach will be joining the list of existing Breakfast Republics open in North Park, Liberty Station, Encinitas, East Village, and Ocean Beach. “We don't have a set timeline yet,” said Engman, of his plans for reopening the new eatery on Mission Boulevard. “We will mirror the whimsical Breakfast Republic design with our living wall, egg chairs, merchandise wall and sunglass mirrors in the bathroom, to mention a few things.” Characterizing itself as an “innovative breakfast destination,” Breakfast Republic serves American classics like Oreo pancakes, shrimp and grits and S’mores French toast. teams collaborated with rescue organizations, such as the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society of Naples, to bring 200 rescue and shelter animals to San Diego, making room for evacuee’s lost, displaced and stranded pets. “These pets are not direct victims,” said San Diego Humane Society’s chief operating officer Jennifer Brehler. “They’re adoptable cats and dogs that were already in shelters near the affected areas that were transferred to San Diego to create room for hurricane victim pets – the lost, strayed, or abandoned. These healthy and socialized pets do not have owners who will be searching for them.” According to Brehler, the upcoming news of Hurricane Harvey alerted San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) to extend assistance and services to Houston’s SPCA and Florida shelters. “As the need grew, we, along with other shelters, responded,” she said. Seven San Diego Special Response Teams – comprised of staff and volunteers – were deployed to temporary shelters, Houston’s SPCA and Collier County Animal Services. San Diego’s Swift Water Rescue Team – San Diego Humane Law Enforcement and Animal Recuse Reserve – was also deployed. Trained in swift water and flood rescues, these professionals work along stateside task forces in emergency response situations.

Wings of Rescue flew pets from Louisiana and Florida to San Diego where staff and volunteers transported the animals to SDHS, the Rancho Coastal Humane Society and Labradors and Friends. San Diego Humane Society’s president and CEO Gary Weitzman explained, that in addition to its Technical Rescue Team, shelter teams provided care to displaced dogs, cats, horses, pigs, cows, trapped livestock and even wildlife. Working tirelessly, teams “never hesitated” to respond to pleas to reunite pets with owners or to provide animals care and comfort. “Working alongside animal welfare colleagues from organizations in Oregon, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Texas and Florida reminded me of the importance of coming together during times of such devastation – not just for animals in need

but for people as well,” he said. Weitzman’s team also helped pets in housing adjacent to a Florida shelter. The pets belonged to hospital patients and evacuees. “Our team cared for the pets so owners would have the comfort of their pets during such a difficult time,” he continued. “Imagine losing your home and being worried about being able to keep your pet. I’m so glad our teams could provide that peace of mind to these hurricane victims.” Weitzman added that Wings of Rescue flew 49 adoptable dogs and cats from Louisiana and Southeast Texas to Gillespie Field, where staff and volunteers unloaded the creatures in temperatures topping 100 degrees. Another heartwarming story included a litter of kittens found in the storm rescued by Jackie Noble, SDHS Kitten Nursery supervisor, who nursed the eight kittens back to health while traveling back to SD in an RV.

AM SLAM shreds Mission Beach The Sun Diego AM SLAM Surf Series brought its brand of fun in the sun to the shores of Mission Beach on Sept. 30. The competition, the single largest surf and skate event in San Diego, featured a festival in Belmont Park’s parking lot with skateboarding, music, vendors, and world-class surfing. Many of the women’s shortboard finalists pulled double duty in the women’s longboard divisions. Tiare Thompson, of Bird Rock, owned the longboard final and finished second in shortboard. Lucy Jarrard was the class of the women’s short-

board final, separating herself with superior wave selection and critical placement of her maneuvers. Other double finalists in the women’s division were Molly Tuschen, Peyton Kemp, and Sive Jarrard. In the open men’s final, Magno Pacheco and Pedro Nogeuira turned the heat into a two man race as they traded the lead multiple times. Pacheco, however, came out the victor and walked away with $500. Maxxswell Rebeiro was named overall men’s champion and also earned $500. Joe Kisling won the men’s longboard final.

In girls volleyball play, head coach Steve Upp’s squad comes into action one week after winning the Buccaneer Bash Tournament. Mission Bay (14-5 overall, 0-2 Eastern League) topped Maranatha Christian in a three-set final (25-22, 21-25, 15-12) to claim the title. Freshman Maya Jessee joined the varsity in the last week, making three freshmen on the squad. Mission Bay is away this week with tough league matches versus Coronado and Patrick Henry, respectively. “We continue to improve and are competing for every match,” Upp stated.

In the matchup against Coronado, 8 of our 10 games were decided by three points or less." The squad this year is comprised of a senior, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen, generally playing squads dominated almost exclusively by juniors and seniors. The Bucs have a bye this week before they play Saints on Oct. 12. Caufield said of the team's progress: "The way the league play works out for beach, it ends up seeding teams for the playoffs between Open, Division I and Division II. As our younger players are steadily progressing, we are hopeful that they'll get the experience playing higher-level opponents now in preparation for the playoffs."

News Church leaders respond to petition to end free homeless meals in Pacific Beach By DAVE SCHWAB Responding to a recent petition drive started by a Pacific Beach man asking churches to stop feeding the homeless, two local church leaders said the free meals are part of their mission, and a convenient way to provide outreach services to the needy. “We began our meals here seven or eight years ago, and we feel strongly that this is a part of the mission of the church, and that it's something we need to be doing,” said Deacon Chris Hulburt of St. Brigid Parish at 4735 Cass St., which serves dinner to the homeless every second and fourth Monday, catering to 120 to 150 men, women and children. “There was a feeling that, we as a Christian community, needed to be active in Christian ministry.” Along with dinner, Hulburt said St. Brigid does one more thing for guests at its feeds. “They can get a snack bag with juice and snacks in it, those are available all the time at the office," he said. "A typical dinner menu would include homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, a salad, a bread roll, coffee, water and lemonade.

“We also give out privately-donated toiletry kits, shoes and other items people might need,” Hulbert said. Two weeks ago, Matt Phillips, of North Crown Point, kicked-off a petition drive on change.org that reads, “The weekly dinners for the homeless population in Pacific Beach are contributing to the complacency and habitual state of their homelessness… this seems to be one of the primary reasons that we have such a population of homeless that never leave or attempt to get off the streets. Churches are enabling some of the very crime that plagues our seaside community. We exercise the right to demand an end to cooking the homeless dinners six days a week because it gives people the wrong idea. For too long has this transpired without accountability of the local churches and we demand immediate legitimate recognition of this petition as it accumulates in signatures.” Phillips' petition drive netted more than 345 signatures in just a couple of days. The goal is to reach 500 supporters. He said he plans to confer with PB church leaders to ask them to stop feeding the homeless. He also intends to submit signatures he's gathered to Councilmember

Lorie Zapf and the City Council. “Here, meals are open to everybody,” said Pastor Bob Rhodes, of Pacific Beach United Methodist Church at 1561 Thomas Ave., which feeds the homeless every Wednesday night. “We see 150 to 175 people, and not everyone is homeless," Rhodes said. "There are all kinds of folks, not just those stereotypically homeless. There are families who come here, folks showing up living in their cars. There's even a guy who regularly shows up in a business suit.” Rhodes said those attending PB Methodist's free dinners get more than a meal. “UC San Diego dental and medical students along with licensed processionals run a free clinic here to serve people who don't have access to medical care,” he said. “We also have a social worker and a psychologist here for the dinners, even an acupuncturist.” Rhodes said PB Methodist also distributes hygiene kits that include “not only ways to clean up, but information about things like Hepatitis A, which the unsheltered can get having no access to bathrooms.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

619-224-0500 CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING FOR COASTAL DEVELOPMENT PERMIT (CDP) CDP Number/Item: 6-16-1120/Th20b Applicant: City of San Diego Public Works Department Attention: George Freiha Project Location: Mission Bay Park, City of San Diego, County of San Diego Hearing Date/Time: Thursday, October 12, 2017. Meeting begins at 9 a.m. Hearing Location: Chula Vista City Council Chambers – 276 Fourth Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91910 Notice is hereby given that the California Coastal Commission will consider a CDP for the following project: Application by City of San Diego Public Works Department for the City of San Diego Maintenance Dredging, which includes a project area of approximately 75.73 acres of bay waters and sand beach. A total of approximately 63 acres of dredging would result in placement of up to 220,850 cubic yard of dredged material being relocated to beach areas and subtidal borrow sites within Mission Bay. Borrow site dredge fill areas will be planted to develop eelgrass habitat, as well as dredged areas. The project provides for a 100 percent reuse of dredged materials with no material being exported from the bay. A comprehensive eelgrass mitigation plan has been developed that meets the CEMP mitigation requirements. Project staging would occur in proximity to the South Shores launch ramp and will be located on a portion of Cityowned property. Access to the staging area would be taken from the south shores parking lot located off of Sea World Drive. Staging would include two on-water staging locations for storage of on-water equipment and berthing of work vessels as well as on upland/disturbed land. Purpose of this project is to maintain the navigational water safety in the bay by dredging the bottom of the bay to the original survey elevation and utilize the dredged material to fill the depleted/reuse areas within the bay in accordance with the Mission Bay Baseline Chart. A copy of the staff reports on these items will be available at http://www.coastal.ca.gov/mtgcurr.html. Oral testimony may be limited to 3 minutes or less for each speaker depending on the number of persons wishing to be heard. Written comments on the project may be directed to Alexander Llerandi, Coastal Program Analyst, at the San Diego Coast District Office. Mailing address: 7575 Metropolitan Drive, Suite 103, San Diego, CA 92108. Phone number: (619) 767-2370. You may also send project-related comments by e-mail to: Alexander.Llerandi@coastal.ca.gov.

leigh Henehan, are looking for MBHS students to get out on the water in true Buccaneer style. The sailing team meets at Mission Bay Yacht Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 to 6 p.m. No previous experience is needed. Call or text Melissa Cunningham at 858-405-0899 if you are interested in joining this fantastic sport and growing team. n MBHS Tour will take place at 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. Meet principal Remillard in the library to hear about the International Baccalaureate Program and enjoy a tour.

Pacific BeachFest music will range from reggae to mambo, to singer-songwriters By BART MENDOZA With its mix of surf, sun, food and music there is no better way to kick off fall than Pacific BeachFest, which takes place on Oct. 7. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family, but one of the event’s biggest draws is the music, taking place across three stages, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The day offers up something for just about every musical taste, from reggae to mambo, and rock to singer-songwriters.

Main Stage

tion, with an easy-going stage manner and set list full of catchy tunes, such as “Semi Automatic.” Meanwhile, soul-blues band The King Taylor Project (12:25 p.m.), based around the vocals of Sandi King and guitar/vocals of Joshua Taylor, is one of the hottest prospects in town at the moment. The secret to the band’s success being in their terrific songs, such as melancholy rocker “High Road,” that sound like standards in the making. Their shared vocals also add much to their sound, but this is one of the strongest combos to hit the local music scene in quite some time. Also recommended on the Main Stage is the Cassie B Project (3:05 p.m.), one of the area’s best dance bands. Led by singer Cassie Bowerman, the band plays a wide range of covers, but their specialty is R&B and soul dance classics where Bowerman can really let her vocals soar. With a set comprised of nothing but crowd pleasers, from the likes of Journey, Taylor Swift and the Jackson, their set will be one the event’s highlights.

The Main Stage has one of the strongest bills in recent years, headlined by Florida-based singer Leilani Wolfgramm (5:45 p.m.). Although considered a reggae singer, Wolfgramm blends in hip-hop and R&B for a sound that’s rhythmic, danceable and radio ready. The Main Stage will open strong with a set from reggae-influenced singer-songwriter Casey Turner (11 a.m.). Turner, a former NASA employee, made headlines last year when his song, “Waves On The Ocean,” was played aboard the Inter- Community Stage national Space Station, becoming the The Community Stage will feature first reggae song debuted in space. a mix of local favorites, including Turner is well-deserving of the atten- Pray for Surf (2:50 p.m) and the Big

Daddy Blues Band (5:10 p.m.), but the focus will be on young musicians from local schools. On hand will be Crown Point Jr. Music Academy (11 a.m.), PB Middle School Band (1:10 p.m.) and St. Paul’s School Choir (2 p.m.). The Community Stage highlight promises to be an appearance by the Mission Bay High School Preservationists Mambo Orchestra (3:40 p.m.) performing under the direction of J.P. Balmat. The big band will bring Latin rhythms and such classic tunes to the beach.

The King Taylor Project (Main Stage 12:25 p.m.), based around the vocals of Sandi King and guitar/vocals of Joshua Taylor, is one of the hottest prospects in town at the moment.

Beer Garden Stage Meanwhile, the Beer Garden Stage will feature a mix of indie bands and DJs including DJ Billy The Kid (1:15 p.m.) and DJ Who (5:15 p.m.). Several reggae-influenced bands will also be performing. For sheer manic energy it will be hard to top reggae/rock hybrid Split Finger (1:45), but pop reggae combo Cityside (3 p.m.), will be close contenders, having built a large local following through their blend of pop hooks and island rhythms. Topping the bill will be bluesy rockers, Band of Gringos (5:45 p.m.). A power trio in the tradition of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com
