he next step in the long process of replacing the 2.3-mile-long seawall along Ocean Front Walk between Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach on Garnet Avenue to South Mission Beach took place two weeks ago when the City Council voted to authorize $2.4 million in discretionary funds to replace the 87-year-old structure. The wall itself was built in 1925 to replace an existing wooden structure built in 1914. “One of my priorities when I came to office was to make sure the wall was replaced,” said District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer. “I’ve been fighting for dollars from the city to make structural The crumbling seawall, built in 1925 to replace an existing wooden structure built in changes to it ever since. us. I remember when I first came to office and noticed the temporary patches with the exposed rebar.” Faulconer has been spearheading the efforts to replace the crumbling structure ever since. He said the process for the repairs will include a bidding phase, which he believes will be completed by the fall of 2013. This would then be followed by the construction phase that will start with what Faulconer refers to as “the most damaged section of the seawall.” This section is the 960-foot stretch between the public bathrooms next to Belmont Park to Ventura Place by the summer of 2014. “The current seawall is not only a public safety issue but it is also an aesthetic issue, because when people come to visit, we don’t want them to see a crumbling wall,” Faulconer said. “So we want to rebuild, and it will look fantastic.”
Amplified Ale Works is new, bold kid on the block in PB BY MARIKO LAMB | BEACH & BAY PRESS The folks at Amplified Ale Works — Pacific Beach’s latest microbrewery — introduced their inaugural brews in style on Nov. 2, coinciding with the launch of San Diego’s fourth annual Beer Week. And managing partners J.C. Hill and Alex Pierson didn’t want just anyone tapping their first cask on opening night. They wanted a prominent San Diegan to kick off the unforgettable evening.
San Diego Beer Week continues through Nov. 11 with plenty of activities in the Pacific Beach area. Page 6 Amid cheers from salivating guests, Mayor Jerry Sanders himself tapped Amplified’s first cask, officially inducting the microbrewery into the thriving realm of San Diego’s craft beer Mayor Jerry Sanders, right, prepares to tap the first cask of industry. “Six, seven or eight [breweries] have Electrocution IPA at Amplified Ale Works on Nov. 2. opened up just in the last year, and Sanders cited San Diego as a thriving city for craft breweries prior. For these seniors, social networking is about the boogie boards BY MARSHA KAY SEFF | BEACH & BAY PRESS You can’t keep a good beach babe down — even if she is on the far side of 70. Just ask the 12 retired friends who started riding the waves on their boogie boards in Pacific Beach 15 years ago. When they originally took to their boards together, most were in their late 50s. “We were ‘children,’” group members agree, adding that since then, many of them have been through an assortment of health issues and surgeries. Although not everyone comes regularly anymore, group members do keep in touch. They’re at the shore on Tuesdays during the summer and fall, behind the Capri by the Sea condominium, starting at about 1 p.m. With the water starting to cool off, they say it’s almost time to don their wetsuits. But despite the dropping temperatures, they didn’t waste any time on a recent Tuesday braving the 69-degree to 71-degree water and two- to three-foot waves. There would be plenty of time afterward to sit on the beach and visit with the four or so regulars and the eight others who brought their boards for one of their reunions. And there would be plenty of time after the season ends to return to indoor exercise. Lonna McKenna, 71, is the group’s organizer. She grew up in South Mission Beach, where she’s enjoyed boogie boarding for years. Then, when she retired along with her contemporaries, “We found out we have this common interest.” “The first time I was ever on a boogie board, I was 74,” said Ann Lampkin, now 76. “I could no longer back-

pack or ski.” The best part of boogie boarding, the friends agree, is the camaraderie. “I finally have friends to do something with,” one of the women said. Lampkin added, “They all die off.” The group comes from the beach area and as far away as downtown San Diego, San Carlos, El Cajon and Rancho Penasquitos. When she left El Cajon that morning, Lampkin said, “It was 98 degrees. There’s a reason for driving this far.” Ingrid Galchenko, 74, agreed. “I love the exercise and being outside and I love the water,” she said. Though Galchenko had surgery that left her with screws in both hips, she joked she’s not afraid the salt
water will rust them. Charlotte Cowan, 72, said she used to swim at La Jolla Cove. Her son, the owner of the local South Coast Surf Shop, got her interested in boogie boarding. Now, she gets her wetsuits and boogie boards from him. Lori McKenna, 66, who moved to Point Loma three years ago from Sacramento, said, “The group took me under their wing. I didn’t know anyone here, so it was kind of nice.” It’s not too hard to learn to boogie board, according to group members. In fact, 76-year-old Luise Marchi said she taught her then-80-year-old sister how to do it when she visited three years ago. Unfortunately, said Sue Sprouse, 70, “I have to move to the gym in the winter.” Marchi said boogie boarding is a great sport for older people, pointing out that it’s not dangerous. “This water is soft,” she said.
The Lamont Grille has been re-envisioned as The Patio and will host its gala grand opening Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. Lovers of the Lamont Grille will be happy to see that The Patio has remained true to its heritage and kept the essence of the grill intact. Quite literally. The actual patio stones from the Lamont Grille have been harvested and reused as a wall treatment at The Patio and the original fireplace has been kept, both to pay homage to the former Lamont Grille that was so dearly loved. The loft room is a formal dining area that has been opulently appointed to be a beautiful dining venue for those special celebrations that the Lamont Grille was so well known for. Appointed with both high and low materials, the venue has a beachy, chic vibe that hopes to be a locale you can visit in either your sandals or designer dress, and have a different experience each time you come. Local architects and designers were enlisted to bring the new, revamped eatery into fruition and owner Gina Champion-Cain said she couldn’t be more pleased with the result. She has worked hard to keep what made the grill special, while creating an environment that combines outside and inside space
in a seamless fashion. “I opened this restaurant to offer neighbors and guests an alternative to the current area restaurant offerings by customizing a culinary experience through exploring many eclectic flavors of the world in a small plate, affordable format,” said Champion-Cain. “The Patio on Lamont Street is a neighborhood eatery, a place where our neighbors can relax, enjoy and share.” The Patio is also branching out to appeal to a younger crowd, as well. The modern, lux design — including a living green wall and textured surf mural — is meant to attract an eclectic, diverse mix. The eatery will offer small plates, latenight bites, full-brunch Saturdays and Sundays, and be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Chef John Medall has created a globally inspired menu with dishes portabello eggs Benedict, Jack Daniels pancakes, watermelon feta salad, ahi tartare, panseared scallops with corn puree, and pork and cacon risotto, to name a few. It will also offer wine flights to encourage diners to try something new, and a delicious mix of modern and classic cocktails. The Patio is located at 4445 Lamont St. between Balboa and Grand avenues.

PB bids farewell to a longtime neighborhood café BY MARIKO LAMB | BEACH & BAY PRESS Zanzibar Café — an iconic community hub where people of all ages, political preferences and religious creeds gathered among friends, family and neighbors over steaming hot café lattes and scrumptious gourmet fare — closed its doors Oct. 14 after serving the Pacific Beach neighborhood for more than two decades. When owner Carole Janks first opened her coffee shop along the main drag of a then-bustling Pacific Beach district 21 years ago, she was up against some serious competition. “We were starting at the same time Starbucks was opening, and I felt at the time, that Starbucks was going to be huge competition,” she said. “They were opening all over the place and I thought, ‘We’ve got to do something besides coffee.’” Over the next several years, Zanzibar evolved into a full-fledged restaurant, serving up premium quality made-fromscratch dishes that her customers kept coming back to savor. “The food side of the business just expanded over time,” Janks said. “It wasn’t the initial goal to be a restaurant, but people loved what we did with the food. We went after the really high-end natural type of foods, and the more we did that, the food business increased.” After a long struggle to obtain a permit for an alcoholic-beverage license, she was also able to add beer and wine to the menu just a few years ago. “We’ve evolved over the years,” she said. “We’ve always been an art gallery for people who want to show art and we used to have live music. We’re constantly trying to do better, improve, keep up with things.” From the beginning, Janks said she wanted to make sure the café was a community haven for everyone.
“My goal was to have a place that was really comfortable for anybody — it didn’t matter if you were young, old, religious, non-religious, any color, whatever,” Janks said. “It was the type of space where it didn’t matter if you were 90 or you were 20, you could still feel good, have a good time and just feel comfortable.” Unlike some coffee shops and restaurants that cater to a specific customer base, the full gamut of customers could be seen on any given day within Zanzibar’s walls. She credits much of that global appeal to her tight-knit family of employees, some of whom have been working for Janks for upward of 12 to 15 years. “I think that was what was appealing to a lot of people. It was just a cool space to be in. It had nothing to do with the space, but it was just the feel we created, and that has a lot to do with the people I hired,” she said. “Zanzibar employees today and in the past were such a family, and I think that comes across in the feel and the vibe — that it’s almost a family atmosphere.” In Zanzibar fashion, many of Janks’ beloved employees from past and present gathered at their favorite coffee shop on its final day to join Janks in a last hoorah and to bid adieu to a longtime staple in the Pacific Beach community. “It’s been a really amazing neighborhood experience,” she said. “There are people who come in here that have been coming here every day of their life for 20 years. It really became an institution in PB, and in a lot of ways, for me, that’s the saddest part, because I have other places, but I just know if I had a place I went to every day of my life for 20 years, I would be devastated.” Over the past decade or so, Pacific Beach has become a different place than it was when Janks first opened, she said.
“It didn’t matter what night of the week or what day, the streets were always packed and there were lines out the door all the time. In those days, there was nowhere else to go than PB,” she said. “It’s a ghost town now during the week.” Over the years, the building suffered from standard wear and tear, and Janks had high hopes of taking care of some renovations to her kitchen, repairing a leaking ceiling and replacing an old awning, among other minor repairs. But when her 15-year lease expired and her rent was increased by several thousand dollars a month several years ago, Janks’ dreams for renovation — or even running a financially viable business — were shattered. “I can’t invest money in a space that I don’t have a lease, and I wasn’t going to Zanzibar Café — long a staple of the Pacific Beach community — formally closed its doors sign a lease that was for such an exorbi- Oct. 14. there’s about six more in the works,” said Sanders at Amplified’s launch party. “What that means is that people in San Diego get the best beer in the world, and it shows every time there’s a national or international competition, we bring home gold medal after gold medal. It’s because of all the guys like this who do an incredible job and put their passion into their beer.” Hill, an avid home brewer for the last three years, enlisted the help of longtime Ocean Beach-based brewer Cy Henley to help realize a dream and share his love for quality craft beer with the world. “I met him and we’re just very likeminded people,” said Henley. “I was just leaving Alpine [Brewery] and wanted to brew my own beer, so this seemed like a natural fit.” The duo — along with other staff members at California Kebab, which houses the brewhouse — also share a love of music and jamming, which served as the impetus for the brewery’s name. “A lot of our staff have played in bands and we all love craft beer, so the name was just fitting,” said Hill. On tap now at Amplified is a light, refreshing Belgian-style blonde beer called the “Leggy Blonde,” along with a dry-hopped San Diego-style India Pale Ale called the “Electrocution IPA.” More craft brews with amped-up flavor are in the works. “We wanted to brew a really hoppy IPA because Cy and I are both hopheads, and my business partner, Alex, is really into IPAs too, so we thought, ‘Let’s

The Belgian blonde is designed for a hot day. It’s really easy drinking.” Also in the lineup is a Belgian Quad called “Rare Form” — a strong, dark ale that really cranks up the volume in body and alcohol content. “It’s going to be around 13 percent, and I’m going to take about half of it and age it in bourbon barrels, so it’s going to get even a little more extreme,” said Henley. With a three-barrel brewhouse system, two seven-barrel conicals and a steady stream of thirsty customers, Hill and Henley are constantly on the move, tending to the equipment and ensuring no patron is left empty handed. non-corporate nature of Amplified Ale Works allows the brewers to have fun with their beer and join the San Diego beer scene as innovative, independent architects of their craft. “We’re really excited to be part of craft beer in the Mission Bay/Pacific Beach area,” said Hill. “We have a small brewing system, which allows us to get really creative. We’re not bound by any a set of staple beers that we have to produce. We can do what we want, we are free to experiment, and we hope people enjoy it.” Amplified Ale Works is located at 4150 Mission Blvd., No. 208, inside California Kebab. The brewpub is host to 23 taps and carries myriad guest beers in styles that are likely to appeal to any beer enthusiast. For more information, visit www.amplifiedales.com or call (858) 2705222.

HEAR Piano Summit, legendary reggae artist, UFO revisited MUST Formed in 1976, Scottish group The Rezillos never quite made it to the big leagues, but with hits like “Top of The Pops” and Fleetwood Mac cover “Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked,” the band has more than earned a spot in music history. Irreverent, over-the-top and full of manic energy, the group was simply a lot of fun, an alternative of sorts to America’s The B-52’s, though with a harder edge and far less kitschy. Whether you want to check out a bit of music history or are simply looking for a night of entertaining rock ’n’ roll, this show by The Rezillos will more than fit the bill.

Thrusters Lounge: where sports and the surf meet BY MARIKO LAMB | BEACH & BAY PRESS Just off Pacific Beach’s main drag and a stone’s throw from the sand, a lively game-day experience at an unpretentious locals’ watering hole awaits. Thrusters Lounge — a place where surfers, avid sports fans and edgy industry folk converge over a mutual love for quality, affordable drinks, endless entertainment and a comfortable, laid-back atmosphere — has been a tried-and-true neighborhood staple for 14 successful years. “It’s an honor to have such deep roots in the Pacific Beach community. At Thrusters Lounge, we strive for authenticity, not perfection,” said owner Nick Zanoni. “Over the years, we have made improvements to the design, menu and décor — none of which can be considered as drastic overhauls. Thrusters follows a pretty simple formula and seeks to offer a comfortable constant that people can rely on.” Patrons can expect this every time they walk through Thrusters’ doors — one of the many reasons it has become a locals’ go-to for game day. “Unlike most of the bigger venues, it’s not as loud and crazy at Thrusters, so you can actually enjoy the game,” said manager Dave Paluska. And with a dozen high-definition plasma screen TVs scattered throughout the intimate venue, there’s not a bad seat in the house, whether it be saddled up at the bar or kicking back in one of the oversize booths. No matter where the seat, sports fans of all affiliations will find comfort in the welcoming vibe that emanates from the staff and fellow patrons on any given day. Although Thrusters is open to fans of all teams, expect to see a wave of Seahawk blues with a hint of electric green lighting up the bar on football Sundays. “We are the go-to place to watch the Seattle Seahawks,” said Paluska.
“Years ago, we hired a new bartender who had recently relocated from Seattle. He quickly became one of our most popular bartenders, and it just [grew] from there.” Seahawks fan or not, a true gameday experience at Thrusters is not complete without one of the bar’s refreshing craft brews in one hand and a juicy grass-fed organic beef or bird slider from Mad Dogs Cafe (across the street) in the other. “You can’t go wrong with our tater tots paired with a side of Mad Dogs sauce,” said Paluska. “We’ve also got an awesome selection of craft bottled beers. During game season, we carry a variety of craft brews from the Pacific Northwest like the Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewery.” During the games, Thrusters also offers specials on $2 bloody Marys and mimosas, a new beef and bird sliders menu and an Oregon State University Mug Club special for OSU Beavers fans and alumni. This season, as a “thank you” to its dedicated fan base, Thrusters is holding a contest for one lucky fan to win a custom Seahawks beach cruiser. Individual raffle tickets are on sale at the bar for $2, or for each bar tab over $30, the patron will receive one ticket for every $10 spent during the Seahawks games. The winner of the beach cruiser will be announced Dec. 30, the final game of the regular season. “Whether you’re a Seattle fan, a Charger fan or aren’t even rooting for a specific team, everyone comes to Thrusters to have a good time and enjoy the game,” he said. “We’ve got a great, fun crowd on game days.” Thrusters Lounge is located at 4633 Mission Blvd. and is open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Mondays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, call (858) 483-6334 or visit www.thrusterslounge.com.
Thrusters offers a selection of 20 local, micro and “blue collar” beers on draft, as well as an extensive collection of bottled craft brews and canned beer. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY Jim Moore, president of the Pacific Beach Community Foundation (left), and Don Mullen, PBCF treasurer (right), along with Nancy Gardner, coordinator for the storefront substation remodeling project, hand over a check for $1,000 to Capt. Brian Ahearn of the San Diego Police Department’s Northern Division. The funds will help the remodeling of the police department’s storefront on Olney Steet that serves the Pacific Beach, Mission Bay and La Jolla areas. “Once we heard the plea, it was a no-brainer that we had to help, espeCourtesy photo cially since it is located in our community,” said Moore.

The NuAge Facelift procedure is a minimal incision approach for facial rejuvenation of the lower face and neck. Compared to the traditional facelift the NuAge Facelift is less
invasive with quicker recovery time. At our facility the Grossmont Oral & Facial Surgical Center, we take pride in the vast scope of services we offer our patients. With three main focuses of practice: Oral Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, and Facial Cosmetic Surgery, we are able to customize a treatment plan for each of our patients. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr.'s Varboncoeur & Caldemeyer are recognized specialists who are surgically trained in a hospital based residency program for a minimum of four years. There they rotate alongside medical residents in internal medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology, and also spend time in otolaryngology, plas-
tic surgery, emergency medicine and other specialty areas. Their training focuses, though, on the hard (ie, bone) and soft (ie, skin, muscle) tissue of the face, mouth, and jaws. Dr.'s Varboncoeur & Caldemeyer's knowledge and surgical expertise uniquely qualify them to diagnose and treat the functional and esthetic conditions in the maxillofacial anatomical area.
