Should PB move the market?
By DAVE SCHWAB Councilwoman Lorie Zapf told Mission Beach residents at a Nov. 29 steering committee meeting that if they want a second weekly summer trash pickup to continue to combat flies, there's only one good way to do it. “If you want a second trash pickup – you're going to have to approve a maintenance assessment district (MAD),” Zapf said. “This is up to the community. You get to vote on it.” A MAD is a special district within defined boundaries comprised of both property owners and businesses, who vote to tax themselves to SEE MAD, Page 10
Man pleads guilty to Mission Beach stabbing By NEAL PUTNAM Earlier this month, a 73-year-old man pleaded guilty to stabbing a woman near Belmont Park in 2014 and will be sentenced Dec. 14. Terrance Alphonce Behan faces a maximum term of four years in prison, but court records say the defense is seeking him to be released in some type of senior citizen supervision program. Behan was determined to have regained his mental competency some months ago after receiving treatment and psychiatric medications after he was committed to Patton State Hospital in April 2015. By DAVE SCHWAB Pacific Beach is encountering some bumps in the road in its attempt to move the community's weekly certified farmers market to a bigger and better location. Opposition to the beach community's plan to move the market from Bayard Street
between Garnet and Grand avenues to Garnet Avenue between Mission Boulevard and Cass Street on Tuesdays, has come mainly from public agencies fearing the change would unduly disrupt and alter existing PB bus routes. “Everyone wants to see this change except Metropolitan
Transit System (MTS) and San Diego Police Department due to rerouting of two bus routes and traffic rerouting,” said beautifulPB spokesman Chris Olson, noting the proposed venue change would create a weekly pedestrian mall. SEE MARKET, Page 12

Updates on pipeline construction and the bees’ knees at Pacific Beach Town Council By DAVE SCHWAB In November Pacific Beach Town Council heard about the plight of bees from a local high school student and the importance of saving them, and were also briefed on a pipeline replacement project. It was also Catherine Jolley's last meeting as Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) president. Jolley thanked residents and spoke of PBTC's annual installation dinner Saturday, Jan. 30 at Mission Bay Yacht Club starting at 5 p.m. Cost is $35 before Jan. 23 and $40 at the door. City staffers Lisa Maclarty and PIO Monica Munoz clued residents in on ongoing construction with Pacific Beach pipeline replacement. “We're replacing more than six miles of water and wastewater pipeline, some of it more than 100 years old and in much need of refurbishment or replacement,” said Maclarty, noting project construction is now on Ingraham Street headed south toward West Mission Bay Drive. “The entire project is expected to be done by May 2017,” Maclarty said, adding that work is being done nights between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m with no road closures. “Once construction is done, we
(city) will be resurfacing all the affected streets and putting in curb ramps, which will make them accessible for people with disabilities,” she said. Mission Bay High School student Martina Pulido, who noted she's “very passionate about bees,” discussed their dwindling numbers while imploring residents to be concerned. “We need to do something about it (bee decline) as a community,” Pulido said. “It's a global problem, but we as a community can make a difference.” The global bee decline is linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens and climate change, as well as the loss of biodiversity due to the widespread use of bee-killing pesticides threatening honeybees and wild pollinators. “Some of my favorite foods are avocados, cherries, oranges and pecans, and without (pollination by) bees, these would all be gone from grocery stores,” Pulido said. “Bees pollinate about 90 percent of the world's food crops outside of bread grains and rice. It's very tragic.” Pulido pointed out bees are dying because of environmental-stress related changes, pesticides, pathogens and “a whole bunch of factors that
really everyone has contributed to.” Pulido called upon beach residents to become more aware of bees. “You can educate your neighbors that bees are here to help us, do no harm to anyone, and that the best thing you can do is spread the word that bees are important – not just flying annoying little insects that want to sting you,” she said, while suggesting people put “basins of water outside because bees work so hard and get thirsty.” Pulido added she'd like to “create awareness in the schools,” about bees suggesting the possibility of a future “beefest,” wherein “people could buy raw honey and have some competitions with neighbors as to who has the most bees in their gardens, etc. Just play with it and have a little fun.”
In other action: • During non-agenda public comment, Paula Gandolfo gave a brief report about community gardening noting donations are being requested at www.seedmoney.org. • Also, Matt Gardner, who owns bike rental shops in Mission Beach, noted an ad hoc committee is being formed to deal with issues surrounding DecoBike, which has installed bike stations on the boardwalk.

Buccaneers’ running back Kenyon Sims finds a seam against Lincoln.

Mission Bay football, boys water polo end seasons By DAVE THOMAS With winter sports off and running, a pair of Mission Bay High fall teams recently concluded their 2016 action. On the gridiron, Buccaneer football under head coach Willie Matson went 4-6 on the season, falling short of its goal of another CIF appearance. “Not reaching this goal was a disappointment,” Matson commented. Among the notable points of the season, the Bucs had a two-game win streak in September, leading to victories over Clairemont and Kearny, respectively. Mission Bay suffered a threegame losing streak over a stretch of October, and then rallied to end the month with a 30-point victory over Scripps Ranch. The Bucs finished the regular season the first week of November with a 30-point loss to Christian. According to Matson, the Bucs did have stellar campaigns from the likes of juniors Kenyon Sims (running back) and Kenny Russell (defensive back). Despite those two individuals having a good 2016, Matson said there is work to do in order to get the program back to where it wants to be. “We start the off-season with a renewed sense of purpose to make

Business PB Bakery sweetly serves beachside community By DAVE SCHWAB PB Bakery is your neighborhood mom and pop shop for confectionery delights. Just ask owner Jim Thompson. “It's hard to believe the holidays are here,” said Thompson outside his bakery on a recent Monday. He noted the Christmas holiday season in PB is almost like a second summer. “The holidays are insane, Christmas week is amazing,” said Thompson, adding Thanksgiving wasn't bad either this year. “We sold out of pies, 500 in three days – we were baking around the clock,” he said, noting, “We crank everything out of this little building here.” Thompson took the retail space nearly two years ago, formerly Sugar & Scribe, which was successful for five years before him. He has since moved to La Jolla. “Once I realized there were no other bakeries in PB – I slid right in,” Thompson said. One thing you won't find at PB Bakery is donuts or bagels. Plenty of other places in town have those. “We do cakes, cupcakes, pies, muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls, crescents, quiche, breakfast sandwiches, acai, yogurt bowls and meatball sandwiches for lunch,” said Thompson. “We specialize more in custom cakes, specialty orders. We've done

Star Wars robots. You name it.” Thompson said PB Bakery also has lots of coffee including a full espresso machine. Noting that wedding business has really taken off, Thompson said PB Bakery also “does a lot of catering, conventions and wholesale.” There's no secret to Thompson's business success. “We always say we do good customer service, good product and good prices,” he said. “If we do those three things – we'll be doing all right.” The cafe owner is a big social media fan and is proud to have a 4 1/2 star rating on Yelp, as well as having 2,500 followers on Instagram, which he noted, “is pretty amazing for a small place.” A business owner on the side, Thompson, who went to culinary school on the GI Bill after leaving the
Air Force, has been a full-time regional air traffic controller for 19 years. His “day job” is in the Miramar area. Thompson and his wife “tossed around a bunch of names” for their new bakery, but decided on PB because, “I wanted to be part of the community,” he said. “This is my heart, this is my love,” he said of the bakery, adding, “This (air traffic controller) is the one that pays my bills, and this (bakery) is the one that makes me happy.” Thompson said he always tells everybody, “I'm supporting small, local business. We're all friends helping each other out. PB needs this. We need businesses to stay here and thrive.” Getting the word out that PB Bakery is here to serve is “huge,” said Thompson. He points out that Thanksgiving's pie sell-out was just one example that people are getting to "know we're here.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

pay for public improvements such as enhanced maintenance, landscaping or lighting services. The Mission Beach MAD is being organized and lobbied for by Beautiful Mission Beach, a communitybased organization including some high-profile business owners. “Don't shoot the messenger,” said Zapf, noting she had to fight hard to get her City Council colleagues to approve a one-time, second trash pickup in Mission Beach in this year's city budget. That extra trash pickup is generally acknowledged to have made a “huge difference” in cutting down on the fly population. MB also has a high number of short-term vacation rentals, which turn over frequently adding to the complexity of getting trash picked up frequently enough to interrupt the insect's life cycle. But another ad hoc group, Residents Against the Mission Beach
MAD, has been formed to oppose the measure. Several of those opponents at the steering committee meeting were mad about the MAD. “What if we don't want the MAD at all?” asked one audience member. “What if we just want a second trash pickup, and we're not in favor of paying half a million dollars for staff and other things?” “This is the community's decision,” answered Zapf. “If you decide you don't want it – vote no.” A couple of residents from the audience then accused Zapf of being biased toward formation of the MAD, to which she replied, “I have no stake in it. It's up to you.” In excerpts from a letter written by Residents Against the Mission Beach MAD to the mayor and city, opponents argued that the proposed MAD is “attempting to ramrod assessments for primarily business improvement benefits down the throats of the North Mission Beach property owners.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com
Your Age Vs. Your Posture! People everywhere are talking about and finding ways to fight the signs of aging and are spending millions of dollars on skin care, cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. What makes a person look older, saggy skin, gray hair, wrinkles? If you think about it, poor posture really makes people look older, plus the pain and discomfort that is associated with it. A 55+ year old who walks stooped over vs a 70 year old who stands tall and walks with a graceful gait, can look as much as 15 years younger.
A Pilates repertoire can provide long term anti-aging benefits plus it is less expensive than surgery. Of course pilates is not for everybody, but Jeff T. from PB says “I came to Mission Beach Pilates for help in correcting long-term posture problems and to loosen up some tight joints and muscles. My six weeks of classes with Jennifer really made a difference.”
Ask The Trust & Estate Attorneys SM
Question:
I do not have any children or many assets, why should I bother doing any estate planning?
Answer:
The major reason for anyone to write a will or do their estate planning is to provide a plan for their family to use at their death, which, on occasion, comes earlier than what we planned. Having this plan spares your relatives, including your parents, the guessing and worry about what you Virginia Weber Laskowitz wanted to happen to your property and your body. I have & Shannon T. O’Neill parents as clients who have survived their children. The pain of losing their child is made worse by the fact that they do not know what their deceased loved one wanted.

Another reason to do some planning is to avoid any medical intervention that you do not want. An Advanced Healthcare Directive allows you to discuss how you feel about artificially prolonging your life and donating your organs upon your death. This document allows you to choose an agent, such as a family member or close friend, who can make healthcare decisions for you in the event that you are no longer able to do so yourself.

“Bus rerouting, although inconvenient, is something we expect of MTS when the needs of the community change,” Olson said. “Safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists is our primary concern. Garnet Avenue is one of the most dangerous corridors for motor vehicle-related pedestrian and bicycle collisions in San Diego. Our community wants to move the cars off Garnet for a few hours to see how we like experiencing a safe pedestrian environment.” Every Tuesday the farmers market, open from 2 to 7 p.m., provides residents and visitors to PB, MB and Bird Rock with locally grown fruits, vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, meats, fish, fresh-baked bread and pastries, cheese, flowers, olive oils, dips, desserts and entertainment. The PB market is frequented by local farmers, chefs, artists and craftspeople. Shoppers coming for groceries can also enjoy live music and stay for dinner while mingling with neighbors. Olson said PB's request to move its farmers market “was just denied again.” This denial led to a change.org petition drive starting with a single signature that has since grown to 140 supporters. “We need public support to demonstrate to our elected government that we want them to make this work for our community just as in

Little Italy, OB and other places with weekly events on their main streets,” Olson said. It is argued that moving the weekly farmers market to Garnet Avenue and blocking that street off would: • Improve pedestrian safety by eliminating motor vehicles from this area for five hours. • Revitalize and promote the business district. • Create a weekly gathering place and sense of community identity. • Provide healthy local produce and products. • Create a non-car centric environment supporting the PB EcoDistrict principles and the City of San Diego Climate Action Plan. • Allow people to experience a pedestrian-oriented Garnet.
GET INVOLVED n Go to change.org/p/mayor-kevin-falconer-approve-garnet-avenue-farmersmarket-beautifulpb to sign the petition. n
If you have questions or comments about the market, or are interested in becoming a vendor or a sponsor, email info@sdweeklymarkets.com.
Noting PB realizes rerouting traffic temporarily one day on Garnet will be problematic, Olson said the proposed change deserves reconsideration. “We are trying to get them (San Diego police, MTS) to embrace a change in needs of the community and work with the us rather than just saying ‘no,’” Olson said. CHRISTMAS ON CRYSTAL PIER
By DAVE SCHWAB
Where: Crystal Pier.
Yuletide is washing over Pacific Beach like a wave as the beach community ushers in the holidays with the annual Christmas on Crystal Pier event Saturday, Dec. 3. Join in on one-of-a-kind festivities featuring a sunset tree lighting and photos with Santa, plus decorative wreath hanging from local businesses and community groups. “Christmas on Crystal Pier is one more opportunity to 'keep the cheer here' and create a community-centered holiday tradition,” said Sara Berns, executive director of Discover PB, which hosts the holiday celebration. “Pictures with Santa on the pier is a unique 'PB' experience.” Berns reminded residents not to forget about the community's other events, like the PB Holiday Parade and San Diego Santa Run, both on
Saturday, Dec. 10. The daylong celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the San Diego Santa Run 5k. The fun run is immediately followed by the PB Holiday Parade at 1 p.m., which showcases community floats, local school bands and Santa wrapping up the celebration. This year's parade theme is “From Sea to Shining Sea,” honoring the different ways cultures and communities celebrate the holidays around the country and world. “Plan to spend the day participating in the events – or just spectating – but everyone should be out to knock off some of that holiday shopping at our local neighborhood businesses,” said Berns, who stressed the importance of shopping local. “The idea is to get people out of the house, off the online stores and out into the neighborhood shopping, din-
ing and spending the day in the district,” said Berns. “When shopping for gifts this year, we hope people will consider the businesses that have contributed to these community events, like the Catamaran Resort and Spa who, without their generous donation, the parade would not be happening this year.” Berns also cited PB Cantina, The Mad Beat and Cerveza Jack's for “contributing significantly to the costs of the lights on the pier, and logistics to put on the parade.” Commenting on PB's Shop Local Campaign, Berns noted supporting local retail businesses “is the nervous system of creating community and a strong business district.” She suggested next time residents are out running errands they should check out the restaurant next door that has a sidewalk café, or the dress shop
