Jon Guerrero pleads guilty to four first-degree murders by Neal Putnam | The Beacon
A suspect who brutally killed three homeless men in Mission Bay, Ocean Beach, and downtown, as well as a North Park woman, pleaded guilty on Jan. 27 to four counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders. Jon David Guerrero, 42, also pleaded guilty to setting two victims on fire as well as eight counts of attempted murder and assault of other homeless people who survived being beaten in 2016. Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey said Guerrero will be sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison plus 143 years. The guilty pleas taken by San Diego Superior Court Judge Ken So cancels a June trial, which would have lasted two months. Guerrero spoke with a raspy voice through a medical mask as he has the flu. The judge asked him several times to repeat his guilty pleas because he could not speak very well. His sentencing is set for May 1.
OCEAN BEACH PIER SURF CLASSIC The fifth annual Ocean Beach Pier Surf Classic on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 a.m. will be presented by The Hodad's Foundation and AWOL Productions / A Way Of Life. There will be a variety of divisions for young and older.
Guerrero's parents attended the hearing and spoke with one victim, Michael Papadelis, 58, who survived. Papadelis told them "I think there's finally closure" with the guilty pleas. "I don't hate Jon," said Papradelis to Guerrero's mother. "I'm happy to be alive." The first victim who died was Angelo DeNardo, 53, who was attacked where he was sleeping under a bridge near Mission Bay on July 3, 2016. A railroad spike was hammered into his head and his body was set on fire. Police found DeNardo's faded birth certificate, bus pass, credit card, and driver's license on Guerrero when he was arrested on July 15, 2016. Shawn Longley, 41, was killed in Ocean Beach the next day where he had been sleeping. His identification was also found in Guerrero's possession. Dionicio Vahidy, 23, was attacked where he slept downtown two days later and died in a hospital. Molly Simons, 83, was the only Also, a family division, longboard and shortboard. This is a local surf contest for all the local rippers and families in the Ocean Beach community. All proceeds will go toward the Hodad's Foundation fundraiser for youth sports, and summer surf and skate camps.

non-homeless person attacked and she was struck with an object on her head as she was walking to a bus stop in North Park at 5 a.m. on July 13, 2016. She died two weeks later in a hospital from a skull fracture. Michael Mason survived after having a railroad spike hammered into his face where he slept in the Midway area, and he was left blinded. He died in July 2019. Guerrero's attorneys requested he be returned to Patton State Hospital where he was undergoing psychiatric treatment with medication. So granted the request and Guerrero will return to San Diego county jail shortly before sentencing. Papadelis was beaten by Guerrero on July 15, 2016, in the area of 19th Street and C Street. Papadelis told reporters he was sleeping outside when he was struck in the face with an object that fractured his jaw and nose at 4:30 a.m. He was blinded in one eye, and both eyes were swollen shut for three weeks. "His whole life he has suffered
mental illness," said Papadelis. "I'm a survivor." Papadelis said he was no longer homeless. He said he would make a statement at the sentencing. Harvey said the closest statement to a motive by Guerrero came when one victim asked him why did he attack him. "Because you're a bum," Guerrero told one victim.
LIME SCOOTERS LEAVING SAN DIEGO The startup scooter company Lime has made the decision to pull its operations out of the San Diego market. This decision came after a boardwalk ban was approved by the City Council.
Guerrero's first assault came in 2009 when he pushed a homeless woman to the ground and stole her bicycle, according to court records. So determined he was mentally competent to stand trial in June 2019. So also ordered him to stand trial on all 15 counts after a week-long preliminary hearing in November 2019.

NEWS 4 Peninsula Planning Board opposes changes to North Chapel FRIDAY · January 31, 2020
THE PENINSULA BEACON
TWO PENINSULA PLANNERS RESIGN The chair of Peninsula Community Planning Board, Robert Goldyn, and vice chairman Scott Deschenes, have resigned from the group. “It is with tremendous consideration and reflection that both Scott Deschenes and myself, Bob Goldyn, have made a decision to resign from the board of directors of the PCPB, to be effective immediately following the March 19 board meeting and general elections,” said Goldyn in a letter. “We wish the board and the community the best of luck moving forward, and we intend to remain active and present in the community. We will do what we can to help the transition to new officers as we move forward.” Added Goldyn, “Our tenure with service to the PCPB has been troubled with continual turmoil, slander, animosity, personal attack, false accusations, formal complaint and a civil rights action suit amongst and between two factions of board members. It is not the responsibility
of the board officers to regulate and pacify contention and dispute amongst the board members. We each have important personal and professional lives and no longer desire to exhaust our valuable time and effort mediating, resolving and working through these conflicts, nor have our attempts been successful at bringing these hostile actions to termination.” PCPB has grappled for months with contentious and emotional issues such as whether Famosa Canyon, a fiveacre bowl at Famosa Boulevard next to Nimitz Boulevard but with no access, where the Housing Authority plans to build affordable housing, should be developed or not. Some community members have been outspoken in favoring preserving the canyon as parkland or open space. The PCPB board was also sued by board member Don Sevrens, since settled, over an allegation of board candidates running on a slate, which went against the group’s bylaws.

In January, the Peninsula Community Planning Board voted to oppose altering the interior of North Chapel in Liberty Station to repurpose it as an event venue. “The operators are seeking a tenant improvement permit by right,” said PCPB board member David Dick, who made the motion to write a letter to authorities decrying physical alteration of the chapel’s interior proposed by new operators 828 Venue Management. “As a result, they are not required to come before this board for a discretionary review.” Referring to the chapel a “shrine,” Dick noted operators are asking for changes that he contended may violate terms of repurposing a historical building, as well as being unpalatable to some Peninsulans. “Eight twenty-eight’s plan is to repurpose the North Chapel to use it as event space, and part of that will involve relocation of some of the pews onsite to be stored offsite, but available for reuse,” said Dick. Constructed in 1942, North Chapel was once a place of worship for sailors stationed at the Naval Training Center San Diego. It was the last stop for many sailors going off to war, some of whom never returned. The chapel closed in 1997 with the operational closure of the base. The chapel was renovated and reopened in 2007. It was leased for use by two church congregations. Joe Haeussler, executive vice
president for Pendulum Property Partners, which partnered with the Seligman Group to acquire portions of Liberty Station, including North Chapel, from previous owner McMillin Companies, addressed PCPB on Jan. 16. “We’ve been active in redeveloping commercial properties with adaptive rescues of historical buildings for over 15 years,” said Haeussler. “We have to follow requirements of the National Register of Historic Places, which caused us to hit the pause button on the project in 2019.” Haeussler pointed to recent approval by California State Office of Historic Preservation and the National Park Service, of 828’s proposed chapel renovations, as vindication for their project. “We are complying with the regulations that are set before us in the NTC Precise Plan on reuse of historical buildings,” he said. Liberty Station Arts District tenant Ron Slayen, an outspoken critic of 828’s chapel repurposing plans, emphasized the facility’s symbolic and religious importance. “The pews are bolted down in this beautiful sanctuary,” said Slayen charging that, “We (community) knew from the beginning that they wanted to gut the chapel. That very much offends me.” Added Slayen, “They (828) kicked out the two church congregations that had been using the chapel, and they are talking now about also removing some its stained-glass windows. We recommend you (PCPB) support our position to save North Chapel as it is.”
“We’re not gutting the chapel,” countered Haeussler. “This is one of the most respectful and least-invasive rehabilitation plans we’ve been involved in the last 15 years.” Added Haeussler, “We intend to have church services and all kinds of activities in the building, and we need flexible seating. So it was decided to store some of the pews in one of the rooms in the back to preserve them inside the chapel.” Haeussler pointed out some of the stained-glass windows aren’t original and block light, adding the plan is to take them down and exhibit them elsewhere in the building. Considered to be furniture, Haeussler said pews are “not required by the National Register to be protected.” PCPB board and audience members alike concurred with Slayen. Elaine Boland noted 828’s email is party@828venues.com. “Does that tell you what it’s all about?,” she asked. “The essence and history of North Chapel is what we’re trying to preserve.” Boland argued the chapel’s handcarved pews are “part of the history to be preserved and should not be considered furniture. This is a sacred place of worship.” “I’ve never seen anybody mess with a church,” said PCPB board member Margaret Virissimo. “I’m dumbfounded to think anybody would consider this a benefit to the community by destroying a church. Why did they pick this church for a retail enterprise, when there are so many empty, deserted buildings in Liberty Station?”

On Jan. 23, Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and San Diego Association of Governments executive director Hasan Ikhrata met at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. to sign the Navy Old Town Campus Revitalization Agreement. "This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. "The fact that it was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Navy inside the Pentagon sends the undeniable message that there is momentum and energy in both Washington, D.C. and San Diego to do something truly special with this property. It marks a huge next step in revitalizing this area into a civic asset that serves the U.S. Navy, the community and our regional transportation network." This agreement signifies that SANDAG and the U.S. Navy will collaborate exclusively to explore
solutions for redeveloping the Navy Old Town Campus (OTC). "The return of great power competition demands that we invest in cutting edge cyber capabilities to stay ahead, and San Diego provides the right access to talent and technology to accelerate the adoption of new concepts. This project will help defend our nation and fuel the partnership and investment that has always made San Diego a great Navy community," said Modly. The U.S. Navy and SANDAG are planning to revitalize the 72-acre OTC property, including the design of new state-of-the-art facilities for the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR), which are central to the Navy’s cybersecurity mission. Modernizing the NAVWAR facilities is critical to the ongoing national security of the country, and the Navy’s ability to be at the forefront of cyber warfare. "This agreement gives SANDAG

the opportunity to work exclusively with the Navy to potentially develop a central mobility hub that would provide critical transit to the airport and connect all modes of regional transit," said Ikhrata. "A collaboration of this magnitude could solidify the Navy's future and their strategically critical cybersecurity mission - in San Diego for generations to come." Additional development opportunities could also include plans for a central mobility hub, a multi-modal transportation center connecting all current and future regional public transportation networks and provide direct transit access to San Diego International Airport. Airport connectivity has long posed a challenge to the San Diego region and will continue to do so as the airport grows to accommodate forecasted passenger increases. Read more online at sdnews.com

Independent bookstore Mysterious Galaxy opening in Point Loma By Dave Schwab | The Beacon
Despite changing locales and ownership, patrons of iconic independent bookstore Mysterious Galaxy can expect the same incomparable service and variety. Patrons-turned-booksellers, couple Matthew Berger a nd Jennifer Marchisotto were regular patrons of Mysterious for six years after moving to San Diego. Of the timing of their acquiring the 27-year-old bookstore specializing in science fiction, fantasy, mystery, young adult, romance, Berger said, “That’s something I always wanted to do.” Though they didn’t expect to be in retail so soon, Berger noted, “When that opportunity arises, how can you say no?,” while describing Mysterious as our “favorite bookstore in the world.” “I ' ve b e en fa m i l ia r w it h Mysterious Galaxy since I was a kid when I used to go with my dad to book sig n i ngs,” said Berger who, along with M a r ch i s ot t o a nd ne w b o r n child, acquired the store Jan. 3 moving it after its lease in Clairemont had expired, into its new 5,650-square-foot space at 3555 Rosecrans St., Suite 107, in Point Loma. With the help of the store’s staff who are transitioning over,

Berger and Marchisotto hope to uphold Mysterious Galaxy’s reputation as expert sellers of genre fiction, while continuing to grow the business’s relationship with the Peninsula. “As lifelong readers and avid fans of science fiction and fantasy, we love being a part of the Mysterious Galaxy community. … we want to preserve all that makes the store special while continuing to grow its presence in the community,” said Marchisotto, who has a Ph.D. in literature. “Independent bookstores play an important role in the community as a source of education and inspiration,” agreed Berger noting San Diego has recently demonstrated an i ncreasi ng investment in literary culture, with new events like the San Diego Festival of Books and the annual Book Crawl during the weekend of Independent Bookstore Day. “I nt e r e s t i n i nde p e nde nt bookstores has only grown,” added Berger noting, “We’ve got some good authors coming

Mysterious will also be partnering with local schools to develop new educat iona l programs. “The best part of this store is the people who work here,” said Berger. “You can come in and tell them what you like, what you read before, and they will give you the best recommendations in the world.” Noting the bookstore’s spirit remains unchanged, Berger concluded, “We specialize in these books and have a great staff.” Myster ious Ga la x y fou nde r s Te r r y G i l ma n a nd Maryelizabeth Yturralde were thrilled to see their bookstore taken to the next level by Berger and Marchisotto. "Their passion and enthusiasm coupled with their ideas for the future and their appreciation for the Mysterious Galaxy staff make them the perfect new owners for Mysterious Galaxy,” said Gil ma n. “We truly feel blessed that the timing for this transition has worked out so well for everyone." Pacific Records releases soundtrack to 'Guitar Legends 3' Bart Mendoza | The Beacon
Point Loma-based record label Pacific Records has scored notable successes with recent signings such as rockers The Moonjacks, hip-hop artist Kubota and boy band, O-Town. Building on their momentum, this week the label releases the soundtrack to one of 2019’s live musical highlights, not just in San Diego, but on a national level, “Guitar Legends 3.” Taped on Nov. 24, 2019, at downtown San Diego’s Embarcadero Park South as part of the first annual Wonderfront music festival,
MURDER CONTINUED FROM Page 1
Kirk Bentz testified as the trial's first witness and said his brother failed to show up at his home for Thanksgiving after dropping out of sight. San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Weber set sentencing for Feb. 26. Hancock remains in jail without bail. "Brian Hancock brutally killed Peter Bentz," said Dort afterward. "The verdict is appropriate, based on the evidence." The seven-woman, five-man jury didn't stick around afterward and attorneys did not talk to them. They began deliberations Jan. 22 in a trial that started Jan. 7. " The Sa n D ie go Pol ic e Department did an incredible job, piecing together a case no one knew about based on cell phone records and credit card receipts," said Dort, who described it as "an
the full concert was broadcast on Dec. 27 via the CW Network. The event was a true all-star gathering, featuring guitarists Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Nancy Wilson (Heart), Steve Lukather (Toto), Warren Haynes (The Allman Brothers), George Thorogood and Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), plus singer Ellis Paul (Tower of Power), alongside a backing group that included horn player Steve “La Bamba” Rosenberg (Bruce Springsteen) and drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Cougar). Rehearsals took place earlier on Nov. 24 in Hendrix Hall at Point Loma’s Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego
music studios, with the full concert running to an hour and a half. The album, with the same title as the main event, cherry-picks 11 of the night’s best tracks. Available digitally or on CD, Pacific Records CEO and founder Brian Witkin is effusive about the album’s release. “First of all, we’re helping people,” he said. “Proceeds from the album, go to America Salutes You, an organization that raises funds for brain and mental wellness charities assisting veterans and first responders. That’s really what this is all about. However, setting that aside, it’s also an honor to be working with
such revered names from the music world,” Witkin remarked. “With an event of this magnitude, there are so many logistics and things to work out,” he said. “Even getting everyone in the same room together can seem like a daunting task. Luckily, we have a great facility like Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego available and everyone involved just wants to contribute the best that they can.” Witkin notes a project like this can be a bit of a blur. “After weeks of preliminary work, it’s amazing to see everything come together on the night of the concert and even more
so to just a few weeks later be mixing those same songs for national release. Once the ball is rolling things seem to go by pretty quickly.” He considers the hard work to be well worth it. “We’re actively helping people and making great music available at the same time. That feels pretty good,” Witkin said. As can be seen on the broadcast, the concert itself had many highlights, though even the extended version needed song cuts due to commercials and additional footage from America Salutes You.
airtight, circumstantial evidence case." Dort told Bentz's family the defense "went down the slope of 'Let's make Peter as bad as he can be." Dort told jurors Hancock lied on the witness stand. Jimmy Rodriguez, Hancock's attorney, had argued for acquittal, saying Bentz may be in Mexico and the prosecution had not proved its case. He did not comment afterward. Hancock, an electrician, denied killing Bentz, whom he described as a sexual partner after meeting him to do electrical work in his Greene Street apartment. Dort argued to jurors that Hancock wanted revenge for Bentz secretly videotaping him and another woman having sex in
Bentz's apartment. A woman testified she had sex with Hancock and thought Bentz might have videotaped it. The woman testified someone sent her a video that she could not open and she feared it showed her and Hancock. She said Hancock told her he would talk to Bentz about it. Another woman said Hancock told her he stabbed Bentz seven times. And his wife testified he threw a bag of Bentz's identification and other items off a freeway. A napkin containing Bentz's blood and Hancock's DNA was found in the bag that was strewn along Interstate 5 near Logan Heights. Hancock was seen on video using Bentz's credit cards and driving his car after he disappeared.
Hancock testified that Bentz told him he was going to Mexico for a vacation and claimed he was in contact with Bentz for five days after he disappeared. He said he had Bentz's permission to use his credit cards and his Toyota Highlander. Bentz is believed to have buried in Campo because Hancock's phone pinged in a stationary location for 4 1/2 hours in Campo on Nov. 24, 2017. A tag for a tool was found in Campo that Hancock had purchased with Bentz's credit cards, according to testimony. Angelina Hancock, his wife, testified her husband wanted "to transport Peter's body" in new boxes she had purchased. She testified under a grant of immunity after signing an agreement with the DA's office.
In a conversation Angelina Hancock had with her husband in jail, she said: "he discussed burying Peter." She said she didn't know where he buried the body. Angelina Hancock testified she first learned of the sexual relationship between her husband and Bentz after reading a sexually-oriented text from Bentz on Hancock's phone while he was in the shower. "As he recently shared with me about his relationship with Peter, it's something I can't provide for him," said his wife, who has since divorced Hancock after 20 years of marriage. Hancock's sentence for murder is 25 years, and the judge could add 50 years for the two previous convictions plus 10 years.

SCHOOL CONTINUED FROM Page 1
The school's stadium lights, installed for the 2017 school year, must be turned off by 7:30 every night unless an event lasts beyond that time. Only 18 events may be held per year under a use policy drafted specifically for Point Loma High and approved by the school district. On other nights, the stadium lights are used for teams to practice. No other area of the campus has such lighting. This could result in teams being unable to find practice space after the new, later dismissal time begins. One possibility would be to negotiate a later "lights off" time with area neighbors. Baseball, played on David Wells Field at Dana Middle School, would be greatly affected with no lighting at their facility. A suggestion to have teams practice before classes begin in the morning is flawed because it would exclude bus-riding students from participation. Another possibility would be the use of the still-unfinished Correia Middle School Sports Complex, which is lighted for night play.

In non-league games, the Dogs devoured Ramona, Olympian, and University City before facing perennial CIF and even state champions Cathedral Catholic, Madison, Lincoln, and St. Augustine. The Pointers nearly knocked off the Saints, losing by only three points (31-28) but lost to the other three by an average of four touchdowns each. Hastings is hoping his team moves back to the Eastern League next season, a request that has already been denied but is being appealed with the support of the City Conference committee.

Pointer girls basketball on rim of greatness BY SCOTT HOPKINS | The Beacon
The Point Loma High girls basketball team is enjoying a very successful season and its players' skills were clearly evident in a recent sinking of the La Jolla Vikings. The Pointers sit atop the City League standings with a 4-0 record and have posted a 14-2 overall record that has them ranked number one in local CIF Div. III rankings. Earlier in the season, they defeated Morse 57-51 to capture the championship of the Crawford Holiday Tournament. Last Friday night's 52-9 homecourt destruction of La Jolla gave the girls a six-game winning streak with four more games to play before winter season playoffs begin in mid-February.
And, head coach Curtis Norwood noted, two of the team's five starters are freshmen. Leading the scoring parade is senior team co-captain Sadie Heckman who is averaging 20.8 points per game. Next is sophomore co-captain Mikaela Miles (12.5) with freshman Jaqueline Riddle close behind (11.7). The other starting freshman is Heckman's sister Emma, who already stands 6-feet 1-inch tall, making her the second tallest player on the squad. "We don't live in the past but always look forward to the next opponent and challenge," Norwood said before the game. "Our goal is a high seed in the playoffs." During the La Jolla game, the Pointers opened with a full-court
Annual Pointers baseball alumni game set for Feb. 15 Future, present and past Pointer baseball players are invited to the annual Alumni Game and Home Run Derby on Feb. 15 at David Wells Field on the grounds of Dana Middle School. The all-day action begins with home run derbies for future Pointers at 9:30 a.m. followed by present and past Pointers at 10:30 a.m. with an entry fee of $10.
A barbecue party begins at 11:30 a.m. with food and fun for all and a tribute to recently deceased Pointer alum Don Larsen, class of 1947, at 12:15 p.m. The 2020 Pointer baseball teams will then be introduced. The alumni game's first pitch is set for 1 p.m. — Scott Hopkins
press and the Vikings were often unable to advance the ball past the mid-court line. Intercepted passes became layups that gave the home team a lead of 18-3 after one quarter and 36-3 at intermission. When the third period ended with the score 49-5, the game's final frame was played with a running clock, rarely seen in prep basketball. In the Viking game, Sadie Heckman tallied 21 points, sinking three of five 3-point attempts. She was also perfect on four free-throw attempts. Riddle and Miles added 12 and nine respectively. Emma Heckman had four points while fifth starter junior Iwalani Cruz had two rebounds and two steals. Senior Cerina Nguyen added four points and junior Kadence Jones had two. Other team members include sophomores Tatum Shea, Gianna Ryan, Nicole Terry, and Brooke Brennan and junior Sophia Caldwell.
SERRA 50, POINTERS 39
The Pointer boys had a difficult time adjusting to the running game and speedy passing of the Conquistadors as they dropped Friday night's contest. The loss lowered the team's overall record to 10-10 and tied for third place with San Diego High in the four-team Eastern League. For the season senior Tyler Morris leads the team in scoring

with 15.4 points per game and has snatched 124 rebounds. Junior Gabe Harrison (13.2 points) has also sunk 20 3-pointers. Head coach Josh Aros' crew plays
Serra once more and will also try to avenge league losses to San Diego (71-50) and Lincoln (43-34) and defeat Scripps Ranch again after an earlier 46-42 win.
