t a March 7 press conference in Ocean Beach, Mayor Kevin Faulconer and District 2 City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell announced that significant repairs will be required to restore and reopen the iconic OB Pier landmark ahead of Memorial Day. In January, the pier was closed to

the public for safety and repair following a series of unusually strong storms and forceful king tides that battered it. City staff determined more than 2,200 feet of pier guard rail, electric, water and sewer lines need serious repair or replacement. Fixes are underway at an estimated cost of $430,000, the City said.

“The pier will remain closed in the meantime,” said City spokesman Alec Phillipp, adding cost estimates for repair timelines, costs and projections for pier re-opening are ongoing. The City also attributed bluff damage, south of the pier six weeks ago, to the impact of king tides with large surf in the 10- to 12-foot range.

WOMAN LEFT FOR DEAD, TESTIFIES AGAINST SUSPECTS BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON

Three people were ordered March 7 to stand trial for attempted murder and kidnapping in which a woman was shot three times and left for dead on the Ladera Street stairs at Sunset Cliffs. Mya Hendrix, 19, the semiparalyzed woman who came into court in a wheelchair, identified the three people at a preliminary hearing that lasted three days in Chula Vista Superior Court. The hearing was in Chula Vista because other crimes were committed in the South Bay area. Hendrix testified she was in the car after being kidnapped when the others shot and killed Mario Serhan, 59, while in traffic on April 11, 2018 in Chula Vista. Hendrix also identified the gun which shot her and and also killed Mario Serhan, 59, who was shot in the head in traffic in Chula Vista on April 11, 2018. Judge Stephanie Sontag ordered Cesar Alvarado, 40, Michael Anthony Pedraza, 28, Britney Giselle Canal, 30, to stand trial for Serhan's SEE TESTIFY, Page 15

Planting the seeds of sustainable urban agriculture at OB Library BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

odern-day Johnny Appleseeds, Ocean Beach Library is starting its own seed library. “Seed libraries promote seed and food sovereignty, nutritional literacy, and most of all cultivates community connections,” said OB Library assistant Destiny Rivera, who’s spearheading the pilot project. “Seed libraries provide access to free seeds, but also are equipped with robust programs and workshops.” Accessing Ocean Beach’s new seed library will be similar to the system used to check out books and other materials. “You check out a seed. You grow the seed, and then you return a seed,” Rivera said.

The librarian added the new seed library program will also offer educational classes by established gardeners. “We’re partnering with UCCE San Diego Master Gardeners and hosting their programs here,” Rivera said, adding the launch date for the seed library on Saturday, March 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at OB Library at 4801 Santa Monica Ave. will be really special.

Also, numerous local gardening groups and civic organizations are collaborating with OB Library on its pilot seed program. “Ocean Beach Elementary is looking forward to joining the Ocean Beach Seed Library Program for our expanding school garden projects,” said spokesperson Donna Lamb. “We will be adding a greenhouse, which will offer the opportunity for our students to plant their own seeds and learn the lifecycle of the plants.” “The Ocean Beach Seed Library is a great addition to our Ocean Beach and Point Loma communities,” said Deanna Chandra, UCCE master gardener. “I’ve met many people inter-

La Playa Trail Association explores military history in the Point Loma hills BY KAREN SCANLON | THE BEACON

LA PLAYA TRAIL ASSOCIATION’S NEXT HISTORY PRESENTATION

S

cattered in the hills over Point Loma’s military reservation are the concrete remains of 12 artillery batteries, and 15 searchlight bunkers. Some of these 60-inch GE carbon-arc lights were kept in camouflaged buildings and rolled into position along narrow-gauge tracks, while others rose from beneath the ground in pop-up shelters. What a perplexing sight for residents 100 years ago of steam-driven ordnance tractors trundling along Rosecrans Street, their trailers burdened with 12-inch mortars. (Weight of the entourage wrecked the pavement.) These guns were en route to the new artillery batteries White and Whistler at Fort Rosecrans. La Playa Trail Association explores this history at its next lecture featuring author and historian Kenneth Glaze discussing his book “Fort Rosecrans and the Army in San Diego 1859 to 1950.” Everyone is welcome on Tuesday, March 19 at Point Loma Assembly, 3035 Talbot St. Light appetizers and sips begin 5:30 to 6 p.m., the lecture at 7 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 is accepted at the door. Glaze is among a handful of volunteer Army and Coast Artillery historians at Cabrillo National Monument. This group of military enthusiasts is responsible for the

What: Historian Kenneth Glaze will discuss his book “Fort Rosecrans and the Army in San Diego 1859 to 1950.”

restoration of one of four base end stations for San Diego’s largest gun, the 16-inch mortar at Battery Ashburn. “Bunkers for Ashburn existed at the Mexican border, Solana Beach, La Jolla, and here,” Glaze says. “They were placed far enough apart to get a good angle at the target of a suspicious ship in range.” Cabrillo National Monument is host to visitors from around the world. “They come for the view, and three main attractions,” Glaze says, “the Visitor Center, Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and our bunker.” The restored base end station is open for public touring the first four Satur-

days of each month, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed on rainy days and fifth Saturdays. “Welcome to 1943!” they greet as you descend stairs to the underground bunker. Dressed in World War II herringbone twill fatigues, Glaze and volunteer-in-park cohort, Dave Boyer, stand ready to enlighten park visitors to past military activity in the area. Receiving the variety of questions from park guests, Glaze began to take note. From his experiences working in the bunker, and some serious research, he compiled a comprehensive history volume, “The Illustrated Fort Rosecrans: A Reference Guide to

the Army’s Coast Artillery Corps in San Diego.” (The Coast Artillery was a division of the U.S. Army.) “This was pretty luxurious for a base end station,” Glaze notes. “When constructed, the bunker’s functional title was Battery Commander’s Position. It didn’t see much action, but soldiers held constant vigil for trouble. Up to 12 soldiers could bunk here – half on duty, half resting.” The bunker has two levels with a precarious climb to the bunkrooms below via metal rungs attached to the wall. And there was no plumbing, bunker bathrooming was “Bucket, chuck it!” Post war records describe some two-dozen vessels passing of which were investigated by base end personnel. “Nothing was ever fired upon,” Glaze says, “but the commanding officer here daily tracked every ship off our coast. Anything deemed to be big would be actively tracked.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

he green beer will flow as freely as the corned beef and cabbage served up along with Irish hospitality and charm at Peninsula and beachfront establishments and throughout San Diego this year on St. Patrick’s Day. An official Christian feast day since the early 17th century, St. Patrick’s Day commemorates Ireland’s patron saint and the arrival of Christianity. It is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival with public parades, the wearing of green attire or shamrocks, and the consumption of green-dyed beer. Because St. Pat’s falls on a Sunday this year, many local events marking the occasion are actually happening the day before on Saturday. But regardless of when you celebrate, here are a few things to do, and places to go, wearin’ green on March 16 or 17:

n Luck O’Loma: This inaugural family- and dog-friendly outdoor neighborhood block party will take place Saturday, March 16 from noon to 10 p.m. featuring live music, booths, food from Surf Side Deli and local brew on Rosecrans Street in Point Loma Village. The block party spans from the Goodbar to Surf Side Deli parking lots, with entrances at both establishments. There is free entry for those who RSVP online arriving before 3 p.m. A portion of proceeds will benefit a local dog rescue. The Animal Pad will also be showing off adoptable canines. For more information, visit nightout.com/events/luck-o-lomablock-party/tickets. n The Harp Irish sports bar at 4935 Newport Ave. will be celebrating St. Patrick’s weekend in style. Top 100 Prospect Rank. Hommes has scrimmaged against NBA players while playing in some pro-ams, and has participated in one-on-one training sessions with Boston Celtics’ Gordon Hayward, as they share the same trainer, according to the Boston Globe. It’s been a long road to success for Hommes, as he’s dealt with injuries throughout his playing career. He tore his left ACL twice in his junior and senior years of high school. While rehabbing, he grew seven inches between his sophomore and senior seasons. Through his hard work and dedication, he was looking for someone to give him an opportunity, despite his injuries. “I would have to say perseverance has been a big part of my story,” Hommes said. "I have had to work extremely hard to get to where I am today. Humility also plays a big role in the type of player I am and as a person off the court. Even though I suffered two season-ending injuries, quitting was never an option for me.” The Lynden, Wash. native came to PLNU in part because of his relationship with head coach Ryan Looney. Looney was coaching at Seattle Pacific University the first time the two met during Hommes’ senior year. At the time,

aulton Hommes, a firstyear forward for the Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions, has had a major role in helping lead the team to their first men’s basketball title since the 1986-1987 season. Hommes is the offensive leader in what has been an incredible season for the 22-4 Sea Lions, which are expected to make a deep playoff run. After being eliminated by top-seeded Western Oregon a year ago in the NCAA West Regionals, they will look to bounce back with the help of their new all-star player. The 6-feet 7-inch junior averages 22 points per game, which not just leads the team, but is also 18th in the nation among Division II men’s basketball players, according to the NCAA. He has six 30-plus point games this year, as well as many 20plus point games. This season, in a new environment, he has stood out as one of the top Division II players in the nation. He has earned the PacWest Conference’s "Player of the Week" five times this season, and is also being scouted as a potential NBA talent. According to NBA Scouting Live, he is ranked 74th on the 2019

T

wo senior members of Point Loma High's CIF Open Division runnerup championship team have received post-season honors. Team captain Will Barba received first team honors, placing him among the top 12 players in San Diego and Imperial Counties, while Chris Bourdon was selected for the second team. Barba played center back for the Pointers. "Will is a great leader who is an excellent one-on-one defender, dominant in the air, and has scored in two CIF finals," said Pointer head coach Elliott Savitz. Barba was recruited by Amherst College of Massachusetts, but has decided not to continue his playing career. Bourdon, a center forward, quickly elevated his play as a Pointer. "Chris is probably our most improved player," Savitz noted. "He went from barely playing as a junior to hardly ever coming off the pitch as a senior. He is deadly when taking opponents on, creates numerous chances with effective dribbling and scores in the big games." Bourdon plans to play at Cal State Los Angeles in the fall.

Looney didn’t have a scholarship available, so Hommes walked on at Western Washington, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. After redshirting for a season, he played two seasons for the Vikings, averaging 15.2 points per game. Having spent his whole life in Lynden, Hommes was looking to transfer. He reached out to Looney again, who had a scholarship available, but this time at PLNU. Hommes, whose talent would fit in at almost any program, has adjusted quite well with his new teammates and coach. “Playing at PLNU has been a blessing and I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities I have been given here,” he said.

Ask The Trust & Estate Attorneys Question: I do not own a home and I don’t have a lot of cash assets, should I still have a Trust? The answer is YES! I love Trusts for so many reasons, not just because they protect you from Probate! My favorite thing about having a Trust is that I Virginia Weber Laskowitz (retired) know that my minor children will be cared for if & Shannon T. O’Neill anything were to happen to me. By setting up a Children’s Trust, I can name successor trustees that can access my bank accounts, retirement accounts and life insurance to care for my children in the event of my death or incapacity. You may have both you and your spouse named on your accounts, but what if something happens to both of you? Having your accounts titled in the name of your Trust allows you to name as many successor trustees as you would like who have the power to manage and control your assets in the event of your death or incapacity. After a warm welcome from Acuña, speakers included opening remarks from OH! Founder Susanne Freistedt, followed by Bali Hai Restaurant Owner Larry Baumann, who shared his historic family legacy; Architectural Historian Diane Kane, who presented the history of Tiki architecture; and Program Director Carol Chin and Event Chair Maxine Ward, who each spoke on behalf of OH! "I was kidnapped, held without my own will," said Hendrix. "They had me tied up in this garage with duct tape over my mouth and they were tasing me." Serhan's killer was alleged to be Alvarado with Canal as the driver. Hendrix said Pedraza shocked her with the taser while in the car. She said the group took her to the Sunset Cliffs area and she was forced out of the car at gunpoint. "I walked down the stairs with the gun pointed at me the whole time,

The first shot grazed her ear, but the second shot caused her paralysis. "The second (shot) went in my neck and... that's the one in which I fell and broke my spinal cord," said Hendrix. "As [Pedraza] was walking away, he turned around and shot me a third time," said Hendrix. "All I could do is just lay there and pray." The defendants will return to court on April 11 to set a trial date. They all have pleaded not guilty and remain in jail.
