Is traffic better on Rosecrans?
SPRING HAS SPRUNG
InSync system reduces travel times BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
Flowers are in bloom at Sunset Cliffs and all over the Peninsula. To celebrate all these yellows, purples and pinks, there are events the next two weekends for residents to explore and enjoy all the flora. On Saturday, April 1, Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Committee will hold an open house from 9 to 11 a.m. On Saturday, April 8, San Diego Horticultural Society will hold its garden tour on Point Loma. See page 5 for more on the events. PHOTO BY JIM GRANT
A new automated traffic-signal optimization system on Point Loma's Rosecrans Street was officially dedicated March 24 by Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Peninsula leaders. Faulconer said the city's “made a concentrated push in the last few years to use techology to become a smarter city trying to use that technology to provide better service to customers and to our residents. … Now we're using technology to improve traffic.” The mayor noted the new signals “communicate with each other, memorize traffic patterns and make timing adjustments so cars keep moving along rather than sitting at a red light for minutes on end.”
‘[Rosecrans was] the core triangle of traffic hell.’ LORIE ZAPF CITY COUNCILMEMBER
The new system “is all about taking real-time data, and turning it into real-time results,” said Faulconer. “Since the new signals were installed, we've seen travel times reduced by as much as 25 percent during rush hour,” the mayor added. “We've also seen the number of stops at these traffic signals decrease by as much as 53 percent, depending on the signal. We have residents and commuters who travel this corridor every day — and they've definitely SEE TRAFFIC, Page 14
Committee endorses proposal to regulate home-sharing Short-term vacation rentals status in limbo BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
With proponents arguing they're an economic necessity, and opponents countering they're an unwanted nuisance, a City Council smart growth committee failed to come to a consensus on three proposed alternatives for modifying rules pertaining to whole-home, short-term vacation rentals. The March 24 special meeting on
short-term vacation rentals was conducted by the City Council's Smart Growth and Land Use Committee chaired by District 7 Councilmember Scott Sherman. The other two committee members present were Chris Cate and Georgette Gomez. After the March 24 meeting, Save San Diego Neighborhoods, a grassroots group opposing short-term vacation rentals in residential areas, hailed as a “victory” Smart Growth and Land Use Committee's decision to only forward a proposal to regulate home-sharing to the full City Council for its recommendation.
Save San Diego Neighborhoods draws a sharp distinction between owner-occupied home sharing rentals, and wholehouse, absentee-owner rentals. District 9 Councilmember Georgette Gomez concurred with Save San Diego Neighborhoods' view. "I feel there's a big difference between owner-occupied home-sharing and whole-home rentals where the owner is not around when issues potentially arise, especially at night and on weekends," said Gomez. "Particularly, I feel there is a SEE RENTALS, Page 18

NEWS San Diego fire chief counters lifeguards’ claims about emergency calls 4
THURSDAY · MARCH 30, 2017
THE PENINSULA BEACON
San Diego Fire Chief Brian Fennessy refuted allegations by the lifeguards’ union that a recent change to how waterrelated emergency calls are handled slows down lifeguard response times jeopardizing public safety. Flanked by San Diego Fire Chief San Diego FireBrian Fennessy Rescue officials and San Diego Lifeguard Chief Rick Wurts, Fennessy at a press conference characterized the claims lev-
eled by lifeguard spokesman Ed Harris at him as “politically motivated.” Fennessy countered Harris and the lifeguard union's claim that his altering of how radio dispatch works, with all water-related 911 calls now going first to the fire department instead of directly to lifeguards, has caused unnecessary problems, including delaying lifeguards’ emergency response times. Noting SDFD “fosters quality relations with its labor unions,” Harris said of Teamsters Local 911 representing lifeguards, “It's been a challenge with them for many years. So much so, that my predecessor

refused to have any interaction with them, as it always ended in hostile conflict.” Pointing out there was no trouble with lifeguards until a “minor change” to how water rescue calls inland was instituted this past December, Fennessy maintained the dispatching change “significantly reduced the life safety risk to the public.” The lifeguards have officially challenged Fennessy's new call routing system appealing to Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office. Lifeguards are even suggesting the possibility of seceding from SDFD if their concerns are not adequately addressed by the city. Fennessy labeled as “absolutely ridiculous,” Harris' allegations that he had a plan to have firefighters replace lifeguards, or that lifeguards were giving firefighters swim lessons. Regarding lifeguards separating from SDFD, Fennessy said, “I can tell you all right now, this will not happen.” Fennessy said the radio dispatch change became necessary following serious flooding citywide during the recent winter storms. He said emergency call volume during storms revealed a flaw in lifeguards existing radio dispatch system. “There were 911 calls being forwarded from police to lifeguards that
were not being answered at all by dispatchers because the call volume quickly overwhelmed lifeguard dispatchers,” Fennessy said adding, “Lifeguards are not trained – or experienced – to handle such a large call volume.” The fire chief added the technology used currently by lifeguard dispatch is old, pointing out their system “only allows for two calls to be answered at a time, giving a busy signal if both lifeguard dispatch numbers are busy. Clearly, a change needed to be made.” Fennessy described Harris's claim that the radio dispatch change has “led to serious confusion” as “patently false.” “There's been no confusion, no delays as a result of this change,” he said adding, “We (SDFD) don't accept the factual inaccuracies being represented.” San Diego's fire chief also criticized the way allegations from the lifeguards' union have been brought forward. “Shame on you Ed Harris, you crossed the line,” Fennessy said. “And shame on your members that supported your approach. Our hope is, that in the future, you won't use a family's pain (to make a point) – that you'll use a different approach.” Michael Zucchet, general manager of the San Diego Municipal
Employees Association, the city's largest labor union, commented, “We share and support all of the words and sentiments of the chief and are disappointed on how the lifeguards’ union has responded on this matter.” Zucchet described the lifeguards’ decision to attack the fire chief's changes to the radio dispatch system as “political decisions, not decisions made on behalf of the public's safety.” Zucchet characterized radio dispatch rerouting as “very minor, common-sense changes based on real happenings with call volumes. “This has mushroomed into this messy drama bringing in old political grievances,” Zucchet concluded. Responding to the fire chief's criticism of how he's handled the radio dispatch controversy, Harris said, “No matter how they (SDFD) slice this, when they add a step (police calls to fire then to lifeguards) it will cause delays and confusion.” Harris also denied Fennessy's claim that his criticism of changes to how emergency radio calls are dispatched was politically motivated. “He's looking at this from the lens of a career firefighter,” Harris said. “He's not able to see it from the lens of a career lifeguard, because, the changes he's making are changes that won't be reversible.”

Question:
I own a timeshare and a vacant lot in another state, should I put them into my Trust?
Some people love and use their timeshares, others do not like paying for them. The cost can be several thousand dollars per year. Where do your children or heirs fit in here? Will they use the timeshare? Do they have the funds to pay the yearly fees? Do not put your timeshare into your Trust as this will obligate your heirs to deal with it. If they choose to keep it after you die, they can make that Virginia Weber Laskowitz & decision to keep it and transfer it into their own name. TimeShannon T. O’Neill shares are hard to sell or get rid of while you are alive, but at your death, the contracts cannot require that the heirs pay for them. If you do not put them into your Trust or put your heirs name on them, they will be easier to abandon or disclaim. The land may go into your Trust. Many of our clients own land in other states or other cities. One of our clients won their lot in a sweepstakes years ago!! Some clients owned land that was supposed to get the high speed rail through it which would have made it a great investment. The location (city, county or state) gets their taxes every year, maybe $60 or $100, so the yearly cost is not that great. If the lot is worth a substantial amount of money, say $10,000, you may want your heirs to be able to deal with it and putting it into your Trust will assist them in doing so.

Police unveil device to test for drugs at traffic stops BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman on March 16 unveiled a mobile, saliva-screening device, Drager 5000, to test for illicit drugs including cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines and prescription narcotics, to be implemented immediately. Her announcement came on the eve of the St. Patrick's Day weekend, typically a high-risk time for drugand alcohol-impaired driving and related crime. “We're here today to introduce a technology to be used by our San Diego Police Department to help detect drivers who make the 'wrong' decision to drive while under the influence of not only alcohol, but also of drugs,” said Zimmerman who added, “Public safety is a shared responsibility, and DUI's are a 100 percent preventable crime.” For those opting to drive under the influence of drugs, Zimmerman noted the Dragers “are another tool we will use to find you, arrest you, and prevent you from endangering our community.” At the press conference, Zimmerman introduced the Drager 5000. The oral-fluid screening device tests saliva for the presence of seven different drugs including THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Recreational use of marijuana was passed by voters in a 2016 statewide ballot initiative. The police chief said the two Drager mobile drug testers, which cost about $6,000 apiece, will be used mostly at DUI checkpoints ini-

tially. But she pointed out their transportability will make them valuable in the field as well. Zimmerman said officers are being trained to become experts in identifying the symptoms of druginfluenced drivers. Those suspected of DUID will then be asked to submit to the Drager test, which is similar to tests administered to suspected drunk drivers. Noting SDPD will be the first police department in San Diego to utilize the oral drug-testing devices, Zimmerman pointed out the Dragers only test for measurable amounts of illicit substances present in a driver's system. Those testing positive will be asked later to take a chemical test revealing the exact level of drugs in their system. Asked whether there were set standards, like alcohol, to measure

whether a drugged person is intoxicated or not, officials replied there isn't at present. “Impairment is impairment, whether you're driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance,” responded deputy city attorney Taylor Garrot. “If your system can't handle that (drug) level, and you're not able to operate a vehicle with the same care as a sober person – then you shouldn't be driving.” Zimmerman added SDPD's response in acquiring the new drugtesting devices was prompted, in part, by the experience of Colorado law enforcement that has witnessed an increase in drug-impaired driving following recreational marijuana's passage in that state. During her 34-year law enforcement career, Zimmerman said she's personally witnessed “the devastation driving under the influence leaves on individuals, families and on our community. “It's all about safety,” the police chief concluded. The Drager testing devices were funded through a private endowment managed by the San Diego Police Officers Foundation. SDPD also announced its intention to continue working with the San Diego City Attorney’s Office and their DUID Vertical Prosecution Unit. Last year, that unit prosecuted 282 drug and drug/alcohol-impaired cases (up from 150 cases the previous year), the majority of them purely drug DUI cases, with a 98 percent conviction rate. The office as a whole prosecuted more than 2,700 DUI cases during this period. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. To report suspected drunken drivers call 911. The San Diego Police Department reminds everyone to call 9-1-1 to report drunk drivers.

San Diego Unified joins school districts challenging Trump’s executive order As President Trump threatens to retaliate against certain jurisdictions that refuse to coordinate with federal law enforcement to identify, surveil, detain and deport undocumented immigrants, education leaders across California have come together to send a strong message: “Leave our students and their families alone.” On Wednesday, March 22, representatives from the San Diego Unified School District, Sweetwater Union High School District, Southwestern Community College District and The San Diego Community College District held a press conference to announce their signing of an amicus brief on behalf of schools and educators supporting Santa Clara County’s challenge to President Trump’s executive order targeting sanctuary jurisdictions. The school districts will also assert their commitment to protect their student’s civil rights, regardless of immigration status. On Jan. 25, the president issued an executive order that, among other things, allows the administration to cut federal funding to cities and perhaps other entities determined to be “sanctuary jurisdictions.” The order is so vaguely worded that any jurisdiction, including school districts, can be found ineligible to receive federal funds for any number of ambiguous reasons. “No child in California should fear going to school because they or their families may be deported,” said Richard Barrera, president of the San Diego Unified School Board of Trustees. “Neither should school
administrators be forced to choose between critical funding and violating students’ rights. “We believe that access to education is a fundamental, non-negotiable right of every student in every San Diego school. Federal funding is not a fee for immigration enforcement services, but rather an investment in the potential of each child, an educated workforce, and strong future economy.” After the executive order was issued, the County of Santa Clara and the City of San Francisco filed lawsuits to block its implementation. When the ACLU filed a motion to intervene in the Santa Clara suit on behalf of the YMCA of Silicon Valley, the presiding judge invited others to file “friend of the court” briefs. To date, 25 school districts and other educational institutions have signed unto the amicus brief filed on March 22. Regarding the executive order, school officials say the law is on their side, as equal education is a right guaranteed by both the U.S. Constitution and the California Constitution. Long-standing federal and state civil rights laws affirm that every student must be provided an educational environment that is safe and welcoming, without regard for race, ethnicity, color, national origin, immigration status, religion, age, gender, gender identity or disability. “Education is the civil rights issue of our day,” said Sylvia TorresGuillen, statewide director of Education Equity for ACLU of California.
OBES Literacy Contest winners The Ocean Beach Friends of the Library recently held an awards ceremony for the 20th annual Student Writing for Literacy Contest. Fourth grade students from Ocean Beach Elementary School submitted essays that were judged by youth services librarian Patrick Grattan and retired teachers and Friends of the Library members Judith Starker and Patricia Warren. The first place went to Angelyse Johnson, second to Timothy Clarken, third to Kairah
Connolly and honorable mention to Jayden Jensma. Each of the students received Barnes and Noble gift cards and journals provided by the Friends of the Library. Angelyse Johnson’s essay will now continue on to the citywide contest in April. The student’s teachers, Cyndie Volpone and Lori Gentry, celebrated at the award ceremony held at the Ocean Beach Branch Library with essay contest coordinator Maureen Roeber.

Freedom Rows at Crew Classic help disabled vets BY DAVE THOMAS | THE BEACON
One of San Diego’s more popular outdoor events takes to the water again this year in early April. Making the day even better; the opportunity for disabled veterans and members of the military to partake in the 44th annual San Diego Crew Classic, which hits Mission Bay on Saturday, April 1. The event features military veteran crew teams racing among the more than 4,000 athletes. The Freedom Rows program assists disabled veterans competing in adaptive and para-rowing events through guidance from experts and coaches, both of whom have tailored plans to help these veterans get on the water, fall in love with rowing and compete at the highest levels. Spectators can cheer on these inspirational veteran athletes while
eating lunch at food trucks and drinking a beer garden beverage. As organizers of the event have noted, with the huge veteran population in San Diego and the city’s long military history, it only makes sense that the San Diego Crew Classic host this unique event. Beach & Bay Press recently caught up with Mary-Carol Madison, director of finance and administration with the San Diego Crew Classic, for a Q&A. BBP: How has the San Diego Crew Classic grown over the years? MCM: This is our 44th year, we began in 1973. The San Diego Crew Classic has grown from a one-day three-hour regatta to a two-day regatta with more than 120 races. We have more than 4,000 competitors from 120 clubs participating from throughout the country. BBP: Approximately how many
local high schools/colleges will be entered? MCM: More than 100 different high schools and colleges are entered. Cathedral Catholic High School has their own team. Other local high schools, such as Mission Bay High School, compete with San Diego Rowing Club Jrs and ZLAC Jrs. SDSU, USD, and UCSD will all have men’s and women’s teams competing. BBP: Given San Diego is a military community, how important was it to extend the invitation to disabled vets and members of the armed forces to participate in this event? MCM: We are very excited to have Freedom Rows racing at the San Diego Crew Classic again for the third year. Being part of a military town, we offer free admission to anyone with military ID as a thank you for their service. We are very honored to now also sponsor this event.

Judge rules Point Loma man pleads guilty to killing parents accused killer of homeless mentally fit BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON
BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON
A judge on March 20 determined Jon David Guerrero is mentally competent to stand trial for three bizarre murders of homeless men in Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, and downtown. San Diego Superior Court Judge David Danielsen confirmed a psychiatric hospital’s finding that Guerrero is competent and criminal proceedings resumed with his ruling. Guerrero, 40, was returned from Patton State Hospital on Jan. 19 and he remains in the central jail without bail. Danielsen set the next hearing for April 4 and Guerrero is expected to enter a not guilty plea. Jon David Guerrero “We still have not had an arraignment,” said Deputy District Attorney Mackenzie Harvey to reporters afterwards. Harvey and defense attorney Dan Tandon submitted two psychiatric reports to Danielsen in a brief hearing, as well as the certificate of mental competency issued by Patton. The first victim was Angelo DeNardo, 53, who was attacked where he was sleeping under the Interstate 5 bridge near Mission Bay on July 3, 2016. An autopsy determined he died before his body was set on fire. Shawn Longley, 41, was found dead in Ocean Beach on July 4 and Dionicio Vahidy, 23, died July 10, four days after he was mortally wounded downtown. The prosecutor said one surviving victim had a railroad spike cut into his sinus cavity and he was left blind in the Midway District. The fifth victim in Golden Hill was also attacked with a railroad spike. She said police found railroad spikes and a mallet in Guerrero’s downtown apartment, along with identification from two victims. Special circumstance charges alleging Guerrero committed multiple murders have been filed which could allow the DA’s office to seek the death penalty. Tandon said Guerrero had “extensive mental health history.” He had been to Patton for a short time in 2009 after he was charged with stealing a bicycle from a homeless woman and knocking her down. Mental competency is a separate issue from sanity and it is possible Tandon could seek a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, but that would have to come in a trial.
A Point Loma man has pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the 2014 fatal shootings of his parents in their Sunset Cliffs home. Peter David Haynes, now 25, faces a maximum sentence of 100 years to life in state prison for killing David Haynes, 62, and his mother, Lissa Haynes, 61, on Nov. 28, 2014 in their Tarento Drive home. Sentencing was set for June 9 by San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren. Haynes remains in jail without bail. With his guilty pleas, Haynes withdrew his insanity plea that his
attorney had hoped would be used in a trial. The special circumstance charges of committing multiple murders and lying were dismissed, which could have resulted in Haynes being committed to prison for life without parole. Haynes will face 25 years to life for each of the murder charges, and would get 50 years consecutively for personally using a firearm in a double homicide. It is likely, though, Haynes will never be granted parole if given a 100-year sentence and may have to serve 85 actual years. Haynes initialed a court document written by his attorney Mignon Hilts in which he described his guilt. “I unlawfully murdered
David and Lissa Haynes by intentionally and personally discharging a firearm thereby causing their deaths, willfully and deliberately with premeditation and malice aforethought,” the statement read. Haynes had been set for trial on May 8. He spent most of 2015 in a state psychiatric hospital after criminal proceedings were suspended. He returned to San Diego after he was determined to be mentally competent for trial. According to previous testimony, David Haynes called 911 and told a dispatch officer his son had shot his mother to death and that his son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. More gunshots were
heard on the tape when David Haynes was mortally wounded. The 911 tape recording was played in the Jan. 12, 2016 preliminary hearing before Halgren. A pathologist testified that Lissa Haynes was shot first and only once. A bullet to her chest pierced her heart and lung and she died within minutes. David Haynes was shot nine times with six wounds to the back, said the pathologist. A detective testified there were shell casings found in the garden outside and it was believed Peter Haynes crouched down and shot into the house at both victims. Peter Haynes showed up at the house later and was arrested.

Seacrest At Home THE HOME CARE AGENCY DESIGNED TO MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS Seacrest at Home, a not for profit 501(c)(3) home care agency located in Encinitas, has received multiple community recognitions as a premier home care agency. They provide non-medical assistance to residents of San Diego County. In addition to providing assistance with personal care, meal prep, light housekeeping, errands and companionship, they also offer two new RN managed programs. The Care Management program can help coordinate your loved one’s appointments, social activities and assist with community outreach. Their new C.A.R.E. program can provide hospital ER companionship within 1 hour, thereby providing peace of mind to family members that their loved one is not alone. Kelli Denton R.N., is the director and
has more than 35 years of nursing experience that includes oncology, infusion therapy, home health and home care. Denton explains that all caregivers are live-scanned fingerprinted, have extensive background checks through the Ca. DOJ (Dept. of Justice) and FBI on a national level. All employees are also bonded and covered with worker’s comp. Effective 6.1.16, all home care agencies were required to be licensed with Ca.’s Dept. of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division and are subject to un-announced state surveys, which Denton welcomes. “Licensure keeps us on top of our game and will weed out those agencies that are not compliant with regulations”. The Old West will live again – at least for two nights – at the Masonic Lodge when "Revenge Girls of the West" returns to Ocean Beach on April 8-9. The locally produced and written dinner-theater show features a cast and crew made up of mostly Ocean Beach residents who have dedicated hours of work for the show's charity, Breast Cancer Angels. Unlike a typical performance where the audience is a passive observer, "Revenge Girls of the West" is an immersive experience where the story unfolds throughout the room, not just on the stage.
"Every seat is a front-row seat, and the audience really gets to be in the thick of it," said Sooty Hetrick, who wrote the show with Tomas Navarro. Included in the ticket price is a three-course carnitas dinner and a full cash bar will be available, as well as bottle service. Since alcohol will be flowing and the dialog contains some R-rated language, the show is for ages 21 and up. This will be the second production of "Revenge Girls" at the Masonic, which features live music written and performed by Jonny Wagon. Production company Shetrick Entertainment is staging the show and
has produced several immersive experiences at the Masonic in the last five years. Hetrick said these shows will probably be the last performances of "Revenge Girls." The performances are a benefit for Breast Cancer Angels, a charity whose mission is to provide financial and emotional assistance to breast cancer patients during their treatments. The Breast Cancer Angels' programs help pay for rent and mortgage payments, clothing, medical bills or any other needs that arise. Tickets and more information are available at www.shetrick.com.

MUSIC 13 Whiskey-steamed rock ’n’ roll with Jagged Lines and Kick the Princess THURSDAY · MARCH 30, 2017
THE PENINSULA BEACON
BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON
San Diego’s music community is growing by leaps and bounds, to the point where many musicians are now performing in two or more bands. Such is the case with Ocean Beach-based Andres (Dre) Ponce, frontman for popular local rockers Jagged Lines, and now also guitarist for San Diego Music Award nominees, Kick the Princess, which is led by Angela Alvarez. “We’re both rock bands,“ Ponce said. “Jagged Lines, which also includes Jared Haines (bass) and Bill Schattner (drums) has what I like to call a whiskey steamed rock ’n’ roll sound. Meanwhile, Kick the Princess has a more pop edge to their music, more light, a wider palate of colors, but the biggest difference is in the lead vocals,” he said. “I use the whiskey analogy about our sound, because it follows a lineage, it’s a great American tradition, it’s down home and rootsy. Jagged Lines just wants to take rock ’n’ roll

and remind people why they played air guitar or used badminton rackets as pretend instruments when they were young,” he said. The union with Kick the Princess is perhaps inevitable. The two bands first met in 2014 when they shared the bill at a local bar. “It was a good match up. Even though our sound was a little different, I could tell right away that we breathed the same air, they wanted to rock as much as we did. When they asked me to play with them a couple of weeks ago, I knew it would work fine, even before we rehearsed.” Ponce next performs with Jagged Lines at the House of Blues on April 28. “I’ve been playing guitar since I was 12,” he recalled. “Just the usual making noise in basements until somebody’s parents kicked us out,” he laughed. “I was in band by 17, influenced by blues players. I like open tunings so I listened to a lot of Elmore James, Robert Johnson and so on. Anyone with interesting tunings by way of rock ’n’ roll can be

reverse engineered back to the blues and I’ve always been fascinated by that,” Ponce said. A native of Connecticut, Ponce moved to San Diego in 2010 from New York. Ocean Beach soon became home. “Since I’m so into music, people have often asked me why I didn’t go to Los Angeles, but I was coming from New York, so I wasn’t interested in another place with a big-city atmosphere. I visited the area and fell in love. I was always attracted to the bohemian feel of the area,” he said. “It reminded me in a way of a part of lower Manhattan, in that it’s a very artistic place, very non-judgmental. I also like that there are a lot of musicians in OB.” Jagged Lines has released one album to date, 2014’s “Free Yourself to Pieces,” partially dealing with Ponce’s transition from East Coast to West Coast. “The album deals with the notion that sometimes to find freedom, you have to let go of pre-conceived ideas about yourself. Things are great now, but there was

a lot of culture shock for me when I first arrived, things were difficult. Music was my anchor, as it always has been and the album is the end result of that,” he said. Ponce is clear on what he enjoys most about being a musician. “It’s that there is always more that you

can do,” he mused. “There is always something more to aspire to, another song to write. Music is a great tool to communicate with,” Ponce said. “You can play a minute of a song and convey so much more feeling than you could by just trying to talk about something.”

noticed an improvement.” District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf described Rosecrans prior to the InSync traffic optimization system as “the core triangle of traffic hell.” “I never knew how long it would take,” Zapf said adding installation of the new lights was a “quality of life issue.” “This is the largest traffic signalization project in the city, and this has been a big team effort,” she concluded. Jon Linney, chair of Peninsula Community Planning Board, and Clark Anthony, president of the Point Loma Association, chimed in on the new traffic-signal system's importance. Linney referred to the new Rosecrans adapted traffic singals as a “blessing and relief ” and a “major advance in taming the traffic nightmare.”Anthony said he was tired of “sitting at stoplights watching minutes tick by at empty intersections.” He pointed out the new “intuitive and innovative (traffic) system will save us time, fuel and frustration — and that's important.” Anthony concluded that “the sheer volume of traffic at both ends of Rosecrans is something we're going to have to continue to address over the years. But this is certainly a step in the right direction.” Asked whether the new traffic signal optimization system has made a difference, Peninsulans answered yes. “Rosecrans seems to flow much nicer,” said PLA board member Robert Tripp Jackson adding, “We need these at Sunset Cliffs and Voltaire/W. Point Loma. That area always backs up between those two blocks.” “I think the system works well and seems to effectively alleviate some unnecessary stops along Rosecrans,” concurred Cecilia Carrick, also of the PLA. Peter Nystrom, chair of the Peninsula Community Planning Board's Traffic and Transportation Sub-
committee, noted there are 11 signal lights on Rosecrans between Nimitz and Interstate 5. “I have never been able to travel north and rarely south without at least one 'red' light stopping my progress,” said Nystrom. “With the establishment of the system for Rosecrans, as long as the traffic keeps up, I always make the trip with all 'green lights.' I don’t know what effect the system has on cross streets, or whether the system is applicable for other locations, but it is perfect for Rosecrans.” The InSync traffic optimization system installed on Rosecrans mirrors a similar traffic optimization system installed recently on Torrey Pines Road on La Jolla Parkway. Seeking to combat worsening traffic congestion, city officials have created a $163 million master plan to install, over a 10-year period, modern stoplight timing systems and other advanced technologies that ease gridlock. The 10-year plan is intended to connect each of the city's 1,540 stoplights into a timing and coordination network controlled by a central hub. The Rosecrans Adaptive Traffic Control System is meant to “decrease gas consumption and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, all part of the city's Climate Action Plan.” That plan aims to satisfy state mandates for reducing greenhouse gases by 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, 40 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.

Blunt But Sweet Marketing will present the first Creative Souls on the West Coast art show from 7 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 5 at Wonderland Ocean Pub, 5083 Santa Monica Ave. The planned series of art shows will feature local artists and vendors through a collaboration with local venues in Ocean Beach as well as Pacific and Mission beaches. The events are aimed at creating exposure and creative networking opportunities for the vendors and artists, while showcasing local venues. “We pair local bands, artists, photographers and fashion designers with the appropriate venues and vendors to be marketed as a packaged event,” said Elizabeth Rori, founder of Blunt But Sweet Marketing. The three local artists who will be featured at the April 5 show are Autumn Love, Collin Worrel, and Thomas Condry. Love will display her latest paintings and mugs, which feature prints of her paintings, plus a personalized touch on the mug’s bottom and a decorated box. “The mugs are a practical use of my prints with my personal touch of love,” she said. “They are a passion project. I call them love in a box.” Worrel is a photographer who makes custom-made frames from recyclable materials. “I take used fences and turn them into frames – into pieces of art,” he said. “That’s my story.” Condry is an illustrator and skateboard deck designer. “I do what I do to have fun. And I want other people to have fun,” he said. “I think life, and all that stuff, can take us away

from a good time. If I can give someone at least one good time, or just a moment, that feels good. Then I’m happy.” Nine weeks ago, the idea to showcase local artists at local venues popped into Rori’s head. “I was lying in bed one evening unable to get the rest I needed. I spent about three hours coming up with the concept and tada! Creative Souls on the West Coast was born.” The response has been positive. San Diego locals, artists, venues, vendors loved the concept. It grew from from maybe three experiences a year to almost seven events scheduled between April and July. “We are now working along Karl Strauss for three major San Diego events in May, June, and July,” she said. “I envision Creative Souls on the West Coast to be an ongoing brand in Southern California.”

Love, a Pacific Beach resident known for her paintings with messages of love, likes that the show will be an eclectic mix of artists. “My paintings are full of love and colorful while the guys’ are more raw with recycled material. It should be fun.” “The amount of incredible people I've met through this process is mind blowing,” Rori said. “These artists have trusted us with their dedication, skills and talents. I imagine this experience will be one not long forgotten.”

COFFEE HUB AND CAFE Where: 2907 Shelter Island Drive. Hours: Open daily 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Point Loma recently welcomed its newest – and ever so coolest establishment – the Coffee Hub and Café, a bike-centric eatery and espresso bar located on Shelter Island Drive. Owner Sandy Hanshaw, who also owns the adjacent Wine Pub, fulfills a desire to cultivate a friendly bike community while offering the finest espressos, lattes, teas – both hot and cold – hot ganache (cocoa) plus a full menu for breakfast and lunch. According to Hanshaw, the Coffee Hub stands as the only coffee shop on Shelter Island. Surrounding hotels offer coffee, but the area lacks an espresso café. Open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Coffee Hub and Café showcases a rustic interior with bikeinfused art and a rotating collection of biking paraphernalia inclusive of riding saddles, caps, jerseys and wheels donated by family, friends and customers who wished to immortalize a piece of their riding gear as wall décor. A full-size bike as artifact also lines the inside interior; one that can actually be “removed and ridden.” Family member and graphic designer Ron Miriello designed the Coffee Hub’s bike-themed logo to complete “a dream come true” for Hanshaw and her husband Andy – the director of the San Diego Bike Coalition. Made in the “spirit of the success of The Wine Pub,” The Cof-

fee Hub and Café offers patrons a bike-friendly environment so that as the “doors close on one side, they open on the other, offering customers delicious meals and drinks morning, noon and night.” The Point Loma resident is no stranger to a work ethic for the success of both business venues. “Some days I’m here 24/7,” said Hanshaw. “At the moment, I’m in the Coffee Hub more than the Wine Pub, but I tend to do both. But I love it. All of it. I really do.” Hanshaw recruited The Wine Pub’s chef Malissa Sorsby to create a unique and varied breakfast, lunch and snack menu for the Coffee Hub. Savory breakfast items include bread pudding with sausage and gravy, flatbreads, sliders, homemade biscuits and a Caprese egg benedict.
“We purposely offer a non-traditional breakfast menu,” she continued. “We don’t offer ordinary, everyday items, but we take care of the classic traditionalist with a tasty menu of bacon and eggs.” Lunch boasts of homemade paninis, soups and salads. Flavored syrups are also homemade. Embracing everything local to work within the walls of The Coffee Hub was important for Hanshaw. One cupping with resident coffee roaster – the Swell Coffee Co. – convinced her that she found her coffee bean. Liberty Station’s Point Loma Teas provides hot and cold tea brews and local pastries are shipped in from Hillcrest’s Bread & Cie. Hanshaw described The Coffee Hub and Café as a smart business move for The Wine Pub. “Serving
Officine Buona Forchetta opens in Liberty Station Buona Forchetta, a South Park neighborhood pizzeria, has expanded with a second location now open in the historical district of Liberty Station at 2865 Sims Road. Restaurant founder Matteo Cattaneo joined forces with Mario Cassineri, executive chef and partner of BiCE, to launch Officine Buona Forchetta, a spin-off of the popular South Park eatery. Melding Buona Forchetta’s award-winning Neapolitanstyle pies with Mario’s Northern Italian upscale entrees, Officine Buona Forchetta’s 2,600-square-foot space is an approachable, family friendly restaurant, driven by quality dishes and an authentic Italian ethos. While much of Officine Buona Forchetta’s menu draws from the original South Park location, including their classic Neapolitan pizzas, calzones and a selection of antipasti dishes, the new location offers a more expansive entrée and dessert selection, overseen by chefs Francesca Peroncelli and Fernando Gorrino. gram as a whole, Officine’s iconic gold-tiled pizza ovens are run by five-time pizza world champion and pizzaiolo Marcello Avitabile. Named for Matteo’s parents, ovens Augusta and Sergio will churn out new Neapolitan creations, including Pizza Al Metro, a two-foot-long pie customizable for sharing, while Augusta will be responsible for solely gluten-free items. In the main kitchen, entrées include a build-it-yourself pasta bowl and chef-driven meat and seafood dishes.
Dessert is overseen by chef Francesca, where her line-up of mostly gluten-free sweets include Officine’s signature Cremoso al Cioccolato e Nocciola, a chocolate crème topped with 24 karat gold leaf. The cocktail menu draws heavily from traditional Italian spirits, utilizing grappa and Campari to create a classic yet approachable line-up of sippers, while the wine and beer list features a rotating selection of Italian labels. breakfast and lunch was a business move that added a smart niche for us and the neighborhood,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of learning all that I never knew before. Coffee was not in my wheelhouse of expertise. But not only did I learn about coffee – there are so many parallels between wine and coffee – I hired experts. I surrounded myself with good people who’ve taught me a lot.” The novice coffee aficionado noted the many similarities between wine and coffee by comparing grapes and coffee beans, vegetation areas, characteristics of flavors and the similarity of textures. Hanshaw added that the Point Loma community has embraced The Coffee Hub and Café with open arms. “There’s such a strong, sup-
portive and rich sense of community with businesses and families within the area,” she said. “Our goal is to be a place where people can come together in a comfortable, productive setting for business meetings, breakfast clubs, book clubs and community outreach groups celebrating different causes. “I’m thrilled every time I walk in,” she continued. “The Coffee Hub is everything I ever wanted and more. The space is warm, comfortable, clean, simple, yet interesting with loads of color. “Our patrons give The Coffee Hub and Café its new sense of popularity. Not only the locals, but the commuters – those who live in the area and stop by for a grab and go – and those who work in the area and enjoy resting for a bite to eat in a pleasant atmosphere. Add the visiting tourists and we host new people every day in completely different ways.” The husband-and-wife team foresee The Coffee Hub and Café as a vibrant coffee shop brimming with Shelter Island locals, daily commuters, domestic and foreign tourists and bicycle riders, all enjoying the space for early-morning hot and cold beverages, breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks.
