SDPD searching for ‘Incense Man’ killer

SLIP SLIDING AWAY

Walter Riley, known as “Ras” or “Incense Man,” was stabbed to death June 22 on the sidewalk at 1900 Bacon St., near where he often stood and sold sticks of incense. At 12:28 a.m. on that Thursday morning, the San Diego Police Department Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a male attacking another male. The first San Diego Police offi-

cers to arrive found the 65-year-old Riley lying on the west sidewalk with trauma to his torso. Officers began life saving measures and the victim was transported to UC San Diego Hospital. Despite life saving measures, Riley died at the hospital. The suspect fled the scene on foot before police SEE SEARCH, Page 10

District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf was successful in obtaining $200,000 in this year’s budget to begin the design process for a new OB Lifeguard Station. The project was listed as a top priority by both the Ocean Beach Town Council and the Ocean Beach Planning Board. Each group sent letters of support to help secure funding for planning for the new tower. “This lifeguard station

was constructed almost 50 years ago, and the deferred maintenance, lack of improvements and recent overloading of the building have made it inadequate for our public safety personnel,” said architect John Ambert, OBPB chair. “The exterior block walls are crumbling away, exposed metal door and rebar systems are rusting out and the plumbing systems fail regularly,” Ambert said.

appear and disappear, and where the passage of time and the physical history of our community are literally written in concrete. No, really! Would anyone have thought that something so ubiquitous and ordinary, something so obviously hard, if not always cold, as common sidewalks, could be even remotely interesting? Or that the very sidewalk

beneath your feet might be steeped in mystery and controversy? Well it sure is. DuVall’s occasional Facebook feature, Sidewalk Sunday, proved – against all odds – to be popular. Girl Scouts perform a flag burning ceremony with club members. PHOTO COURTESY OB HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Burning the flag With the 4th of July celebration just behind us, we thought it would be fun to share this story from 1962 when the OBWC burned the American flag. As most people know, the correct and appropriate way to dispose of an American flag is to burn it. It is a sign of respect, even though when we see the flag being burned these days, it is often a sign of protest. But in 1962 the OBWC got a new flag, so they had a ceremony to destroy the old. June 16, 1942: “Our new flag was displayed for the first time, and the old flag was burned in a solemn ceremony by a troop of Girl Scouts. This flag was used by the Civilian Defense office during World War II and was presented to the club by our honorary member, Mrs. David Fraser.” We are a divided country, but our flag is a unifier-a sign of democracy, courage and hope. So we were curious, and did some research to learn more about taking care of, and respecting our American flag. Turns out there is a Flag Code!

Did you know… The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of

blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top. The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be

discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations. The flag should never have placed

on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind. The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. Source: USFlag.org The OBWC hopes you had a wonderful 4th of July and looks forward to working hard for our community for the rest of the year. We would especially like to invite the women of Ocean Beach to join us. Our next monthly meeting is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. Come to learn more and stand with us as we recite our pledge, in unison at the beginning of each meeting: “We, the women of the Ocean Beach Woman's Club, will honor each other with friendship, community, fun and philanthropy, in the spirit of sisterhood today and always.”

Peninsula Family YMCA partners with Livestrong Foundation for cancer patient programs Over the past several decades, the number of cancer survivors has dramatically increased to nearly 14 million people within the United States today. Historically, health care providers have instructed cancer patients to rest and avoid activity. However, research has now demonstrated the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis, during treatment and beyond. Physical activity is not only safe and possible, but can improve individuals’ physical functioning and quality of life, and reduce cancer-related fatigue.

In response to this new research, the YMCA has partnered with the Livestrong Foundation to offer the new program. The Peninsula Family YMCA, which has served the Point Loma, Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach areas for more than 40 years, launched its first Livestrong at the YMCA session in July 2016. Now, almost one year since its inception, they have 27 graduates of the program. Patrick Oberg, Peninsula Family YMCA’s health and wellness director, said: “Not only are we building

relationships and getting referrals from multiple health care providers such as UC San Diego Moore’s Cancer Center, Scripps Hospital, and the VA, we have worked with Y members and other community members who have fought or are currently fighting cancer. Our trained instructors strive to bring a sense of normalcy back into every participant’s life through this free health and wellness based program by developing and guiding them through personal workout routines.”

The goals of the Livestrong at the YMCA program are to empower adult cancer survivors to take an active role in their own health by engaging in a strength and conditioning program and aligns with the Y’s mission to help all develop the spirit, mind and body. The Peninsula Family YMCA offers this free, 12week program designed to meet the needs of adults with cancer before, during and after treatment. By focusing on health, rather than a disease, the Y wants to help cancer survivors move beyond illness to reclaim wellness in spirit, mind and body. The program’s graduates feel that they have benefited from this unique

YMCA program. One participant said, “[Livestrong at the YMCA] has helped me get back my dignity and my confidence and just feel good about myself again and feel like a human being.” Another added that the program “has given me the opportunity to build up my strength and stamina to help me fight this horrible disease.” The Peninsula Family YMCA’s next Livestrong session begins July 10 and they are looking for participants. If you or someone close to you has been diagnosed with or is a survivor of cancer, and wants to learn more about this unique program, contact Oberg at 619-2268888.

The Women's Museum of California will be celebrating the heroism of women in the United States military through the different uniforms women wore from World War I to today. This military-themed verison of the Women's Museum's “Historical Clothing Show” will take place outside Baracks 16 in Liberty Station on July 7 at 6:30 p.m. The uniforms that will be worn for the show are on loan from the

Mean Green Team of volunteers brings life to Point Loma BY CASSANDRA PENALVER | THE BEACON

Every Friday, the Mean Green Team bands together to work on various service projects in order to give back to their community. The Mean Green Team is the Beautification Committee of the Point Loma Association who dedicates their time to spruce up 17 different public areas in Point Loma. According to Mean Green Team member Cecilia Carrick, the team does everything from planting, weeding, trimming, and even cleaning off graffiti. While the Point Loma Association has been around for 55 years, the Mean Green Team was founded in the 1990s. Today, the team is around 50 members strong with roughly 20 to 25 members participating at any given community service event. They pride themselves on their diversity that ranges from doctors and lawyers to nurses, teachers, and even submariners who all work together to achieve the association’s mission: to improve their neighborhood. Before beginning most of their projects, the team also takes it upon themselves to gather and collect funding grants from the city, county, and private individuals to assist with the community projects. When they face a project they might not be able to tackle alone, they are never hesi-

crans and beautifying local utility boxes. Carrick mentioned that the team finds local artists to paint utility boxes throughout Point Loma. The team then reviews the artwork and makes sure that it fits well within designated neighborhoods before

moving forward with any given artist. Not only do these painted utility boxes add character to their community, but also aids in deterring any unwanted graffiti as well. The Mean Green Team’s 17 areas it takes care of in Point Loma include: Ed’s Triangle, Pork Chops, Nimitz West, Dana Middle School, Dewey Elementary School, Soto Street Shed, Liberty Station/NTC Rose Garden, Tennyson Triangle, The Village, Canon Hiking Trail, Point Loma Park, Rosecrans Jacarandas, Catalina/Canon median, Nimitz Boulevard median, Poe Triangle, and Sandy Beach on Shelter Island. After every team meetup on early Friday mornings, the volunteers continue to spend time together for a well-deserved coffee or food rest at locations near the site they were working at that morning. The Mean Green Team does not come together to only volunteer and go home but they also enjoy spending time with one another – many of the volunteers have been loyal to the team for more than 20 years. The team does great things to achieve their mission of improving their neighborhood and look forward to continuing to give back to their community as much as possible. Point Loma United Methodist plans comeback for 2018 BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

After 88 years, the Point Loma United Methodist Church closed. But it turns out the closure is only temporary. Church member Victor Neuman noted that PLUMC has appointed a new pastor, the Rev. Jessica Strysko, to lead the church's Ocean Beach campus, for which an early 2018 re-opening is planned. Strysko has been serving as a pastor at First Rev. Jessica UMC of San Strysko Diego in Mission Valley since July 1, 2012. She grew up in Yucaipa, Calif., before going to the University of Redlands for undergrad (religious studies, English literature double major) and Harvard Divinity School. “First Church was my first appointment,” said Strysko, noting her husband Tim and she, “are about to celebrate our eighth wedding anniversary Aug. 1, and we just had our first child, Abigail, who's now 4 months old. We love our dogs (Spartacus and Merlin), hiking and being outdoors, and love serving others.”

Strysko noted the OB church she's taking over is truly in a state of transition. “More than 20 years ago, First Church began a ministry called the Water's Edge — and a community began to gather for worship on the Mission Valley campus,” she said. “What began as a youth service, has now become an inter-generational gathering of people with a strong sense of community, and deeply held values of inclusion. “The Water's Edge is what is known as a Reconciling Community, and is open and affirming, proclaiming the love of Christ to everyone, regardless of color, gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. All are welcome in full membership and communion,” she added. Strysko noted that, during conversations about a merger between First UMC of San Diego and Point Loma UMC, it soon became clear that the churches were feeling called to bring the Water's Edge to the water's edge in Ocean Beach. Furthermore, the OB campus will also operate as a ministry center, with much of the campus dedicated to serving the community. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Bayside Skyride at SeaWorld celebrates 50th anniversary Rising 90 feet over Mission Bay, SeaWorld’s historic Bayside Skyride celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday, June 23. The skyride opened in 1967 as the Atlantis Skyride and transported riders to the Sea World

Atlantis Restaurant. It was the first ride constructed at SeaWorld San Diego and was built by the Von Roll company. The ride has provided more than 20 million park guests scenic views on

classically designed gondolas that glide across nearly 3,000 feet of cable high above Mission Bay. At the time of its construction it was the longest span of any skyride and remains the only one that travels

over a body of salt water. It stands as only one of 11 operating Von Roll type 101 gondola rides in the United States and one of 18 worldwide. It is the oldest gondola lift in California.

Point Loma killer gets 100 years to life BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON

“I would never want to murder someone else.” That’s what Peter David Haynes, 25, said last month as he tried to reassure his relatives he would not come after them after killing his parents in their Point Loma home in 2014. After making his statement, Haynes was then sentenced to 100 years to life in state prison for the shooting deaths of Dr. David Haynes, 61, and Lissa Haynes, 62, a nurse. Peter Haynes told San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Halgren he would not stop taking his medication or ever own a gun again in the future. Haynes has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but was determined to know the difference between right and wrong. He withdrew his insanity plea March 24 and pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. Despite the long sentence handed down, Halgren told about 15 Haynes family members there was a slight possibility Haynes could be eligible for parole after serving 25 years. Because he was 22 years old when he killed his parents, Halgren said he might be eligible for a youth offender parole hearing after he does 25 years. Peter Haynes described his actions as “a war” after hearing from his uncle, Dr. Kevin Haynes, who told the judge “I would be concerned about the safety of my family if Peter is ever released.” Kevin Haynes noted his brother David was shot nine times on Nov. 28, 2014 after his wife was shot in the heart in their home at 3 a.m. on Tarento Drive in the Sunset Cliffs area. “Their murders are a tragedy that our family is still trying to cope with,” said Kevin Haynes. “I struggle with the issue of forgiveness every day,” said Kevin Haynes. “Forgiveness does not replace punishment.” The uncle said a relative has visited Peter Haynes in jail, but “Peter never once…apologized.” The worst memory, said the uncle, was seeing the Thanksgiving leftovers in a bag in the bloody kitchen that his father had left for Peter Haynes since he didn’t join in Thanksgiving with other family members the day before. “Our Thanksgivings are forever changed,” said Kevin Haynes. “That vision still haunts me to this day.” Peter Haynes didn’t eat the Thanksgiving leftovers because he was withdrawing from heroin at the time, according to the probation report. Haynes was arrested three days before the slayings for driving under the influence of drugs and had posted bond. His attorney, Mignon Hilts, said “mental illness does not discriminate.”

OB BEANS

BY SAVANAH DUFFY | THE BEACON

Where: 4879 Newport Ave.

Most people who start a coffee shop do so with a passion for coffee. This was not the case for the founders of the OB Beans Coffee Roasters, the coffee shop that had its soft opening on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach a few weeks ago. According to Ben Nease, in charge of the marketing and sales of OB Beans, the group started out with a deep love and passion for people, and coffee was something they just “fell in to.” Mark Bell, the principle owner of OB Beans, says he had taken a trip to Mazatlan, Mexico and while there observed a friend of his open a coffee roaster location and three coffee shops. Bell noticed the way the shops supported the humanitarian efforts taking place in Mexico, a concept that strongly appealed to Bell, who has been involved in nonprofits for 20 years. Bell pitched the idea to Nease and two of their friends, Ryan Bardelli (production manager) and Taylor Langstaff (involved in the international relations), and the four decided that they wanted to replicate that model and build on a sense of community back in the U.S. Nease says that, in addition to Bell’s trip to Mexico, the friends got interested in coffee when they began learning how many people are involved in the farming and production of coffee and the amount of good that could be done in the industry. “We didn’t start off coffee people. We started off people people,” says Nease. “And then through that we started gaining passion for coffee.” OB Beans started as an online sales company, where customers

could purchase merchandise and wholesale coffee beans. According to Nease, OB Beans stuck to roasting coffee and online sales for two years. In June 2016, Bardelli says the friends signed a lease to take over the large building that was formerly Thrift Trader, and open their first brick-and-mortar location, a moment that Bell describes as “surreal.” “We’re just trying to figure it out as we go and it’s been a lot of fun,” says Bell. “But yeah, it’s really really satisfying to see people enjoying the space. Not just our friends, but community from all over the place enjoying it and being inspired by it. It’s been really really really rad.” Though OB Beans was originally going to open in December, the extensive amount of remodeling that the building required pushed the opening back about six months. The four founders, with a rally of

friends, family and even acquaintances behind them, jumped into action to essentially rebuild the building from the ground up. Everything in OB Beans, from the walls, floors, and ceiling to the tables, cement benches and the barista bar, was hand-made or altered by the four founders and the friends, family and even acquaintances that rallied behind them to help, Bardelli says. He describes the remodeling of the shop as a “village effort.” “I think that really just speaks to the community that we have behind us,” says Nease. “I mean, four guys, we have our name on the ownership or whatever, but it’s [the shop’s] not ours. It’s the community’s and the people that have been supporting us like crazy.” The grand opening of the shop will occur when the other two businesses that share the space with the

coffee shop are ready to open. The businesses include Coastal Native, which sells beachwear merchandise, and Wailua Shave Ice, a 100 percent organic shave ice stand from Kauai of which Langstaff is a part owner. Additionally, OB Beans is waiting for its Mill City Roaster to be delivered. When it arrives, customers will have the opportunity to sit at the bar and watch as the coffee beans are roasted right in front of them, a feature that customers can take advantage of even now with the current smaller roaster. Though the coffee shop is still in its “soft opening” stage, Nease emphasizes the quality of the espresso and the house blends, some from Guatemala, Ethiopia and Chiapas, Mexico. OB Beans plans on continuously providing different single-origin coffee blends. Specialty teas will be available and

a full commercial kitchen allows customers to buy sandwiches and other food items from the shop as well. OB Beans buys their beans directly from small farmers in Africa, so directly in fact, that the group of friends has traveled to Africa to visit the farmers and form relationships with them. Nease says the group of four friends has traveled to Oaxaca, El Salvador and Guatemala. But building relationships is just one of the aspects to the OB Beans slogan “Doing Good... Farm to Cup.” In visiting the farms, the founders of OB Beans get to ensure that the farmers are being paid fairly for the work they put into farming the beans. Nease says that part of the vision for OB Beans is to show people the processes and hard work that go into a quality cup of coffee — a concept that is visually represented in the shop by the canvas photographs on the walls, showing coffee beans starting out on trees and being picked, processed, dried and stored. Another perk to visiting the coffee bean plantations is getting to make sure the process is completely organic and sustainable. The outcome is high-quality specialty coffee, with a score of 83 or above on a scale of 1100, according to Nease. OB Beans’ vision takes “doing good” a step further by taking it past the coffee industry and into nonprofit organizations. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

A better way to buy a bike at Moment Bicycles BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

Moment Bicycles in Liberty Station has everything to serve cycling aficionados every time they're out on a ride. “We were the first tenant on this end over here (former Naval base), noted J.T. Lyons, owner of the all-purpose bike shop at 2816 Historic Decatur Road, Suite 135. An engineer-turned-cycling entrepreneur, Lyons, who previously had a bike shop on Rosecrans Street, just celebrated his business's 10-year anniversary. More than the bike shop's address has changed over time. “We started out very much as a specialty store just doing triathlon and road-specific cycling,” Lyons said. “But now we cater to everyone, including just people who ride on a regular basis.” A cycling enthusiast whose business started as a hobby, Lyons became more involved in cycling retail

because “I felt, going to a lot of bike shops, that I wasn't being taken care of quite as well as I should be,” he said. How did Lyons respond to that? “So we created a better way to buy a bike,” he noted. How's that? “The traditional way of buying a bike is you come in, talk to a salesperson, much like buying a car, and they show you the different makes and try to fit you into one of them,” Lyons said. “But a lot has changed over the past 15 years or so with different brands having different (dimension) standards.” Lyons turned the traditional bike sales model around, inventing a way

to take the individual's dimensions first, then customize the bike they purchase to fit them. “We start with what we call a dynamic-fit bike, which we can optimize (with the aid of CAD computer technology) to synchronize and customize your bike, figuring out where you're most comfortable,” Lyons said adding the bike-fitting process “takes a couple of hours.” “It's a significantly different experience than our competition,” Lyons added. “As far as I know, there's no bike shop on the planet that does this.” Beyond better serving the customer, Lyons noted customization serves a larger purpose. “We're selling cycling, not bikes,” he said. “If we don't do a great job getting that person dialed in, they're going to ride the bike about a month and then give it up. We're trying to get them to say about their bike ride, 'This is the most fun I've every had. I'm going to keep riding my bike the rest of my life.”

J.T. Lyons is the owner of the all-purpose bike shop in Liberty Station. PHOTO BY DAVE SCHWAB

Lyons noted San Diego's current mayor and police chief are both customers. But he added he's interested in serving everyone in the community from children to professional and competitive riders. And Moment Bicycles price range reflects that. “We have $80 bikes for kids up to a $15,000 bike designed specifically for the Iron Man Triathlete,” he said

adding Moment Bicycles also caters to electric bikes, which “are changing the entire bike industry as electric-assist bikes are getting more people on bikes.” Lyons pointed out his shop's goal is to “get people engaged with bicycles,” adding “our job is to help them find the solution to what it is they want to do.”

A judge has issued an arrest warrant for an alleged drunk driver who failed to show up in court after being charged with misdemeanor hit and run and reckless driving in Ocean Beach on the Memorial Day weekend. Jacob Souchak, 36, was arrested May 28 and he did show up for his arraignment on June 1 in San Diego Superior Court. He had been free on $2,500 bond, but he did not show up in court again for two court dates later in June. Souchak was driving a gold Chevrolet Impala near the Ocean Beach Pier when he turned down the Boardwalk and knocked down a handicapped parking sign. People quickly got out of the way and no one was injured. The misdemeanor charges say Souchak was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2011 and 2006 in Pennsylvania. Court records say he had no local address and was only in San Diego a few days before the incident occurred. Judge Maureen Callahan ruled Souchak forfeited his bail money by not appearing in court.

arrived. He was described as a white or Hispanic male, wearing a white or gray hooded sweatshirt, and baggy blue jeans. During their investigation, detectives obtained video footage of the suspect from a nearby business located on the 4900 block of Newport Avenue. The footage shows the suspect walking toward 1900 Bacon St. shortly before attacking Riley. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the male. Anybody with information is encouraged to immediately call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Riley was homeless and frequented the Ocean Beach neighborhood. A tall, slender African American, with a graying beard and a deep soft voice, Riley could be seen most evenings on Newport Avenue near Bacon or Cable streets wearing a backpack and dark hoodie, and holding sticks of incense in his left hand. “I can’t believe anyone would want to kill him,” said Ocean Beach resident Thomas Melville, who is editor of the Peninsula Beacon. “He was always super nice when I would buy incense from him. Sometimes it was five sticks for a $1, other times seven, or 10. He would laugh about it as he counted them out. It’s awful he was brutally attacked like that. It’s tragic.”

THE PENINSULA BEACON

BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON

PARTNERS FOR PAWS Where: Mother’s, 2228 Bacon St.

On July 19 Mother’s Saloon will host the fourth annual Partners for Paws fundraiser, with a special appearance from Superunloader frontman, Jimmy Lewis. All proceeds from the event go to the San Diego Humane Society, helping our furry friends with everything from food to medical care. Running from 6 to 9 p.m., admission is free, with funds raised through the sale of raffle tickets as well as Mother’s Saloon donating 10 percent of the evening’s sales to the cause. Organized by Partners for Paws founder, Susan Olsen, the event fills a critical need locally. “It’s just myself and anyone I can get to volunteer,” she said. “Our mission statement is basic, we get together to raise money for the animal community. “But, I think raising money to help causes like this and the Humane Society are important,” Olsen continued. “Our Humane Society is state of the art, we are blessed to have a rescue reserve and

a food bank amongst all the things they do, and I want to make sure that they are able to continue to do that. It’s a service to the public that many other places don’t have. Our city loves our animals and this is a wonderful way to help them.” Olsen is a 25-year volunteer with the Humane Society, motivated to raise funds by her love of animals and the desire to give back to her community. “I’ve worked many other events, but always wanted to have my own. Four years ago, I walked into Mother’s with the idea and it’s gone from there.” She credits the venue for much of the events success. “They’ve been absolutely great, helping with everything from getting the word out to booking the talent.” Gale Hopping who does promotions for Mother’s is happy to be involved. “I’m always happy to be involved with good people and good

causes,” he said. “Anything we can do to make life a little better for the animals is worthwhile.” Olsen plans to continue to promote her events in the Ocean Beach / Point Loma area. “I specialize in the boating community,” she said. “I’ve been a member of the yacht club for more than 20 years, so it’s an area I know well and that’s a group of people that are always happy to be involved.” It is perhaps unusual for a fund raiser to not charge a cover, but the raffle tickets ($5 each or six for $20) give attendees a chance to donate and potentially receive notable prizes such as a half-day fishing trip, a sunset cruise for two and an overnight stay at Loews Resort in Coronado. Olsen is hoping to raise at least $2,000 on the day. “I find that letting people know the goal amount helps,” she said. “Every bit raised is appreciated, but if we can hit our goal, we can really make a difference.” Anyone who would like to contribute, but can’t make the show, is encouraged to donate at sdhumane.org/yappyhour2017.

Annual Point Loma Summer Concerts kick off on July 14 Point Loma Summer Concerts has announced its 17th season of concerts at Point Loma Park. The all-volunteer committee organizing the annual community event is bringing back some old favorites and introducing two new bands in the five-concert series. In addition to crowd-pleasing Main Stage acts, the concerts will again feature the Junior Stage, where talented youth from Point Loma and Ocean Beach show off their musical chops. The concert series was founded 17 years ago by Bridget Cantu Wear, wife of former City Councilmember Byron Wear of Point Loma. In its inaugural season, the Point Loma Summer Concerts series was sponsored by the community's then Chamber of Commerce. The Point Loma Association picked up sponsorship of the event the following year. Concert committee spokes person Kerri De Rosier said event orga-

USS Bennington Commemoration at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery BY KAREN SCANLON | THE BEACON

More than a century ago on July 21, 1905, two boilers let loose aboard the gunboat USS Bennington while at anchor on San Diego Bay. One of the worst peacetime disasters in the history of the U.S. Navy was underway, and the lives of 65 sailors and one officer were sent to eternal rest. On Saturday, July 22, at 11 a.m., a public commemoration ceremony will take place at the Bennington Monument, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. Local historians, and compatriots of Sons of the American Revolution San Diego Chapter (SAR), commemorate San Diego’s naval disaster in cooperation with cemetery personnel. The focus of each event has been based on some aspect of the explosion as reported in newspapers of the time. For example, “San Diego at large fed and coddled the injured and dying sailors, each with a moth-

erly volunteer at his side,” according to the San Diegan Sun. Two years ago, volunteers stood at each of the 35 graves holding a pile of clean white linens, empty casks for ice cream, or baskets of oranges, representing the help offered to the Bennington crew by citizens of San Diego in early days of the explosion. This year’s commemoration will honor the Navy’s Admiral Caspar F. Goodrich, commanding officer of the Pacific Squadron in 1905, and Ensign Lindsay M. Lacy, whose efforts to launch the lifeboats for Bennington’s injured is worthy of remembering. Goodrich held a Court of Inquiry in San Diego aboard his flagship, USS Chicago, as to the cause of Bennington’s explosion. Goodrich also gave the keynote speech at the 1908 dedication of the Bennington Monument. According to historian Mary Ellen Cortellini, the admiral traveled cross-country from Brooklyn Naval Yard to San

and Point Loma elementary schools,” De Rosier said, adding Moment Bicycles in Liberty Station is donating this year's top prize, five bicycles to donors in five successive weeks. “It's a wonderful give-back to the community,” she said of the concert raffles, tickets for which cost $1 a piece, 6 for $5 and 25 tickets for $20. Another raffle prize is a Bose mini sound system. The concerts board welcomed new sponsors Jensen’s, Epsilon, Haute Spa and McGann Facial Design – and also welcomes back the Peninsula Beacon. The concerts are supported by generous sponsors, many who come back year after year. Willis Allen Real Estate has been there since the very beginning, as well as the County of San Diego, San Diego Arts and Culture Commission, Council District 2, Point Loma Association and David P. Diego just five months after losing his only child, a son, Caspar, Jr., in a turret explosion aboard another Navy vessel, USS Georgia. Forty-seven sailors were buried at the post cemetery two days after San Diego’s disaster. (Interestingly, at the time, the Navy did not return bodies to families. After public outcry, Navy officials revoked, and 12 bodies were disinterred and sent home. Note, too, that with the 1904 completion of Army Post Fort Rosecrans, the burial grounds were known as the post cemetery. The cemetery was not given federal status until 1934.) At July’s ceremony, grand nephew of Goodrich, Don Farnam, professional engineer of Long Island, N.Y., and his brother, Chris, will read excerpts of the admiral’s monument dedication speech. Local ship historian, Steve Lawson, will read Secretary of the Navy Charles J. Bonaparte’s commendation letter to Naval Officer Lacy paying tribute for rescue efforts of his fellow sailors.

Finally, Graham Wright, assistant director, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, will read a moving 1905 letter by Goodrich commending Lacy. Colors will be presented by Clairemont’s Boy Scout Troop 260; and also by compatriots of SAR dressed

in yellow wool uniforms of the Revolutionary War. Since there was no West Coast involvement in the American Revolution, SAR members join local historians recalling the Battle of Bennington, the namesake of the stricken ship.

cliffs and several teenagers jumping off them, an Ocean Beach woman’s birthday idea bloomed into a huge beach party where everyone took turns being a kid again. “It was actually an idea I had – I had seen others do it on a smaller scale, but I wanted to be able to do it way bigger,” said Alex White, who celebrated her 28th birthday slip-sliding away. “When we invited people, we made sure to say this was an adult birthday with a slip ’n’ slide.” To build the 70-foot-long slide, White recruited her boyfriend Nat Greene and he brought along his friend Marshall Fice. They went out Sunday morning and bought 100foot-long by 10-foot-wide plastic sheeting that was 6 mm thick, and then threw in some inflatable toys and environmentally friendly dish soap – to improve slipperiness. The birthday team hauled the supplies down the steep trail to No Surf beach, dug out two trenches, buried the sides of the plastic, and then tested the results. It went rather smoothly. “It took about an hour and a half for two of

us to set it up,” Greene said. “Our friends By early afternoon, the beach started to fill Daniele Fice and Brittany Raine supplied the up with partygoers and the slipping, sliding, cookies, Rice Krispies treats, and refreshments and slithering began. “Everyone had a blast, and it was great to for everyone. It was a team effort for sorting see a whole bunch of adults turn into giddy out the logistics.”

kids again,” White said. “In typical OB fashion, we invited the surrounding groups on the beach (whom we didn't know) to participate as well. It was an awesome way to make new friends and for everyone to have some fun.” The only downside to the birthday party happened after it finished. The group had to lug everything back up the cliff, which took about 10 trips. “We wanted to be sure that we left the beach cleaner than how we found it and to treat the beach just as well as it had treated us that day,” White said. “I do want to remind every one who goes to the beach, please be sure to make sure you pack everything up and leave the beach spotless.” The couple, who live in Ocean Beach, loves to spend time at Sunset Cliffs and No Surf is one of their favorite spots to spend a day relaxing on the sand. “We try to catch at least a sunset from somewhere on the cliffs at least once or twice a week to remind ourselves of how lucky we are to live here,” White said.

"Point Loma has long been known as a highly desirable area of San Diego but most homes here are older, especially those with a view," explained Lanz Correia, Associate Broker at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty. "That is what makes this new construction, view property so exciting – there is nothing else on the market like it.” The home is walking distance to Liberty Station and will be completed in early July. It features four bedrooms of which two are master suites, four and one-half baths, professional Kitchen Aid appliances, and folding La Catina doors in its 2,600 square feet. Perfect for entertaining and enjoying all the amenities Point Loma offers, the new home won’t last long in the San Diego real estate market. About Lanz Correia Lanz Correia is a fourth-generation Point Loma resident, active in both the Portuguese and Italian communities, and is on the Board of Directors for the United Portuguese S.E.S. He is honored to leverage his skills and relationships to effectively live, love, and list Point Loma and Ocean Beach.
