home believed historic by some in the La Playa neighborhood of Point Loma is proposed for demolition and redevelopment, and momentum is building to oppose the plan. The parcel involved is a 1912 Prairie-style residence at 310 San Fernando St. Thomas Gaeto of BG Consolidated, LLC in Escondido, has acquired the property and intends to redevelop it. According to Steven Untiedt, an attorney living in La Playa near 310 San Fernando St., the 94-year-old couple who had resided there have

died and the property was sold. “The developer who bought it from their trust has already demolished the carriage house, and

would like to demolish this historic Prairie-style house, built around 1912, and build three new houses on the property,” said Untiedt. “He

has applied to the City to have this property declared not to be historic.” A Historical Resources Research Report was recently submitted to the City’s Historical Resources Board for the property. But it has not yet been reviewed by staff for completeness, or had a determination made on it, the City said. Save Our Heritage Organisation, the oldest countywide historic preservation organization in California, has recommended that the SEE HOUSE, Page 5

Point Loma High celebrates 450 graduates

Valedictorian Clara Page and salutatorian Jack Loewer watch as their classmates walk in the processional. (Below) The caps of these grads SCOTT HOPKINS / PENINSULA BEACON show they will attend SDSU, Cal Berkeley, Texas Christian University and UCSD.

Venerable Pete Ross Stadium couldn't accommodate the masses who spilled onto the field to witness the 94th commencement at Point Loma High School. The Class of 2019, numbering just over 450, viewed itself as supportive of each other. Soon they will scatter far and wide with 90 percent of them, holding more than $2 million in scholarships, continuing their education. Salutatorian Jack Loewer drew laughter during his speech when he turned to his classmates and said, "We were worried about some of you." But they all made it. Any shadows from the hazy sun overhead were vanquished by the smiles of the graduates, their families and friends. – Scott Hopkins

Massive Torrey pine removed in Point Loma BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON

T

he sight of a crane's boom raised nearly 100 feet in the air over a Point Loma neighborhood on June 17 drew stares from onlookers and passersby alike. The crane from Bob's Crane Service in Lakeside was brought in by Atlas Tree Service to remove a tree. But this was no common tree. A gargantuan Torrey pine that had grown many decades, was brought down, perhaps due to safety concerns, by four area property owners. With a trunk measuring five feet in diameter, the tree grew from a point near the common corners of four separate lots between the 900 block of Catalina Boulevard and Temple Street. Crews arrived at 8 a.m. to begin the task and finished taking the tree down by about 4:30 p.m. Huge pieces of the trunk were left on the street and a median that separates the homes from the main lanes of Catalina Boulevard. A representative of Atlas Tree Service said the pieces, some weighing tons apiece, would be removed the next day and taken to a company that cuts them into firewood – lots of firewood. The cost of the project, likely in five figures, was split by the four

property owners, according to a neighbor. A worker pegged the cost for the crane alone at $550 per hour with two diesel support truck/trailers, other trucks and a crew of about a dozen needed to perform the work. One worker, who awed neighbors dubbed "Spiderman," jumped about effortlessly in the highest branches of the tree cutting limbs with a chainsaw and working his way down.

Workers with radios communicated with the unseen crane operator as increasingly huge pieces of the tree were lifted and swung over nearby homes, leaving some residents uneasy. Some residents speculated the tree may have been planted by local historical figure Katherine Tingley who led Lomaland, a Theosophical commune from 1900 to 1942 on what is now the nearby Point Loma Nazarene University campus.

property be historically designated. “After reviewing the historical report submitted as well as a comprehensive site visit in 2018, Save Our Heritage Organization asserts this residence is highly intact and (historically) significant as an example of the (architectural) style and retains all components of integrity,” said Bruce Coons of Save Our Heritage Organisation in a letter to the City. “HRB guidelines state that a resource must embody the distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period or method of construction… 310 San Fernando St. embodies the Prairie-style of architecture and its 20th-century

construction techniques. SOHO asserts the residence is significant and merits historical designation.” Coons said the home’s “character-defining features” include: Its two-story form, a low-pitch hiproof and deep overhanging eaves, partial-width front-entry porch, asymmetrical entry and wood sash windows. “Three hundred and ten San Fernando St. is one of the earlier houses within La Playa that can be seen from historic images,” added Amie Hayes, Save Our Heritage Organization historic resources specialist. “Save Our Heritage Organisation believes that, due to the high integrity, this is likely to be reviewed by the Historical Resources Board and, hopefully, will be designated historic.”

Two La Playa residents, Klonie Kunzel, president of La Playa Trail Association, a historical group, and Internet bookseller Charles Lewis Best, are concerned about losing the existing 310 San Fernando St. home. They contend its replacement would be both precedent-setting and community character-changing. “I am very much in favor of having the 1912 Prairie-style home designated historical,” said Kunzel. “This is one of the nicest neighborhoods in America and this is a nice, quiet, secluded, beautiful place. It makes no sense (to tear it down), especially when you don’t know what the developers are going to build. It would destroy the historic character of the neighborhood.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

izza baron Gibran Fernandez is opening the fifth installment in his Mr. Moto Pizza House chain with a celebratory grand opening Saturday, July 6, at 11 a.m. in a new building at 1929 Cable St. “The opening of Mr. Moto Pizza House’s fifth restaurant is a milestone and a testament to our great growth trajectory,” said Fernandez, a native San Diegan who cut his teeth in the pizza trade at age 23 in 2009. “I feel lucky to have experienced this success and I don’t plan on stopping. I’m excited to work with our team to develop new ideas that reinforce growth

and enhance the experience of our guests.” Mr. Moto’s New York-style fastcasual pizza restaurant offers one of the largest “by the slice” options in San Diego. With touches of industrial, craft and classic New York style, the chain’s innovative design portrays an authentic experience, perfectly blending old world and new. Gourmet pies and toppings at Mr. Moto’s include something really special: a vodka cream pizza

with vodka sauce, raspberry chipotle sauce, bacon and sour cream or smoky greens with fresh spinach, ricotta, garlic and sweet balsamic glaze. “We concentrate on doing what we do best — our pie,” said Fernandez. “Unlike many pizzerias, we shred our own cheese, make our own marinara, dressings and dough. We stay away from preservatives, powders or canned foods. We make the extra effort to make everything in house while using only the freshest products.” Each month, Mr. Moto’s features a new, fun pizza style created by its team of bakers. The restaurant has a short and simple menu with several gluten-free options.

Classic 1929 Spanish Charmer

Updated kitchen and bathroom still retains character including details such as hardwood floors, beamed ceilings and exposed pulley ceiling fans. Home features 3BR and 1BA with the possibility of adding an additional bath from the laundry room. A bonus space created in the former garage provides a full guest suite with kitchen and bath. The charming backyard echos the Spanish style with lovely desert landscaping, private patio and soothing fountain. Located in the heart of Loma Portal, it's an easy walk to Liberty Stations restaurants, shops, galleries, park and movies without Liberty Stations HOA and Mello Roos fees. Priced at $970,000 this is a great opportunity to own your home in Point Loma with easy access to the Airport, yacht clubs, beaches and bay, and excellent schools.

Students buy and plant palm tree, flowers at OBES There is a bird of paradise that Cyndie Volpone’s fourth-grade class planted about 25 years ago in front of Ocean Beach Elementary on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Her class, at that time, earned money to buy it for Earth Day. It was 12 inches tall when planted. It now reaches to the rooftop of the school building. This year, Volpone took students outside to see it and told them the story behind it. They decided they wanted to save money to buy their

own plant for Earth Day. They took it upon themselves and kept track of their earnings. They saved small change for several months totaling $65. Chuck Cardwell, the OBES groundskeeper who is an important and respected part of the school community, went out of his way and helped students choose a palm that would flourish in the area. He prepared the area directly next to the giant bird of paradise so the palm could be seen regular-

ly by the kids as they come to and from school each day. Cardwell provided all of the necessary equipment needed and happily guided the kids on how to dig the hole for not only the palm, but for various other small ground cover plants. The students were excited to provide not only beauty to the school, but to the earth as well, along with leaving behind a bit of a legacy for their class (they move onto Dana Middle next year).

The Arts Program aims to infuse the airport with light, levity, comfort and enriching experiences. GO SKATEBOARDING DAY IS JUNE 21

New book recounts the birth of skate in San Diego BY LUCIA VITI | THE BEACON

ROBB FIELD SKATE PARK If you need a place to ride, check out Robb Field Skate Park. Designed with input from the legendary Tony Hawk, the 40,000square-foot concrete park is suitable for all ages and skill levels.

D

id you ever wonder what catapulted skateboarding’s popularity into the stratosphere? Does history of a “sport,” born and bred along the coast of Southern California, coincide with your love of surfing? Are you “stoked” to know that skateboarding will be featured in Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics? If you’ve answered yes to any of the above questions, John O’Malley’s new book, “Urethane Revolution: The Birth of Skate-San Diego 1975,” is a must read. The always interesting, sometimes shocking, off-color page-turner dialogues the history of skateboarding from one of its founding fathers, O’Malley. Dubbed the “greatest story never told in extreme sports history,” O’Malley retraces his steps as a member of the original Skunkworks crew to creating his own skateparks. Photographs – sure to make everyone reminisce about the good ole’ days – accompany stories from the underground. “One crazy year on the California coast in 1975 a hippie skunkworks, bred in garages and shacks, launched the modern skater movement,” writes O’Malley. Strap in for a wild ride replete with two car chases, two plane crashes, a massive truck bomb, Colombian Narcos, the Mafia, senior White House staff, a gypsy fortuneteller, three straight-up miracles, Jacques Cousteau, big piles of cocaine and naked hippie chicks.”

O’Malley details the books title, “Urethane Revolution” beginning with the history behind the urethane. “Around 1973, a guy named Frank Nasworthy discovered these urethane training wheels that were used on beginners’ roller skates,” he notes. “They were grippier than the unforgiving composite clay wheels of the day. Frank bolted them on his skateboard and bingo! Suction-cup traction like no one had ever imagined possible. It’s in that instant that the skateboard went from a toy with feet of clay to a wall-climbing UFO, screaming at warp speed to the 2020 Olympics.” The Revolution follows suit. “The Revolution began when a rift opened in the universe and that centrifugal buzz – heretofore available only

through sports like surfing and skiing – came leaking out of the streets,” writes O’Malley. “Adrenaline rushing up your road, serotonin dripping down the drive. And the scales fell from our eyes: Any paved surface could be ridden. And the call went out: The rift has opened, God is great, spread the word.” According to O’Malley, a perfect storm of “ill winds” that began with a historic drought fueled the Revolution. “The drought uncovered insanely fun new skating forms like the reservoirs and drainage ditches while recession-vacant homes had their swimming pools drained and skated,” he pens. “Our eyes spoked an urban landscape lit up with a million new possibilities.” “Urethane Revolution” also showcases La Jolla native Bobby Turner. The innovative craftsman built Turner Summer/Ski slalom skateboards. Still popular today, these boards are constructed along the design vein of surfboards and snow skis. According to O’Malley, Turner’s skateboards “revolutionized” slalom skating boards. O’Malley touts: “The Revolution is over. Skaters won.”

Bioluminescence glow returns along area beaches BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON

T

he crimson tide is back. Not Alabama’s football team, but the bioluminescent glow from the marine phenomenon known as the red tide. “It’s intermittent and impossible to predict,” said Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist and bioluminescence expert Michael Latz, of the recurring phenomenon. Red tides are caused by aggregations of dinoflagellates (marine plankton) including Ceratium falcatiforme and Lingulodinium polyedra. The latter is known for its bioluminescent displays, with waves or water movement causing the phytoplankton to glow blue at night. Pictures posted recently on social media showed the eerie neon glow. According to several San Diego photographers who captured the effect, the bioluminescent algae bloom was captured along the shores from Torrey Pines to Ocean Beach. The range of red tides also varies greatly. There was a really big one in October 2011 that extended up the entire Southern California coast from the Mexican border to Los Angeles. “It’s usually every couple years, but sometimes it happens in sequential years,” said Latz of the red tide, noting there was a massive one along the San Diego coast in 1995, with a follow-up the next year. It’s happening again, as there

was a red tide in 2018, and now another one this year, both starting near the end of May. The Scripps scientist said the tide’s plankton go through developmental stages, much like the lifecycle of some insects. “The organisms that produce this tide have a dormant life state called a cyst, that can sink down into the sediment and emerge later,” Latz said. “Local red tides maybe have an internal clock, and a year later they emerge into swimming cells. On a calm sunny day, they’re (plankton) attracted to the sunlight and they swim right up to the surface. If the water is strong enough to stimulate them, they’ll produce bioluminescence.” “It is of great scientific interest why that is occurring,” said Latz of the tidal algae blooms. “For me, the

bioluminescence is really the spectacular part.” Latz added scientists have successfully grown red tide plankton. “We just grow them for our research in labs so we can study them even when they’re not abundant on the coast here,” he said. Scripps scientists continue to sample red tides when they occur to learn more about the genetic and metabolic characteristics of the organisms. What’s also mysterious is the timing and duration of red tides, which have lasted anywhere from one week to a month or more. Bioluminescent displays are viewed best from a dark beach at least two hours after sunset, though visibility is not guaranteed. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com
