OB Street Fair: unparalleled entertainment BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON San Diego has many fun civic events each year, but none rival the annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili CookOff. Now in its 32nd year, the event’s location, alongside one of the best beaches in the Western U.S. — coupled with San Diego’s near-perfect summertime weather — demonstrates why more than 70,000 visitors take a stroll down Newport Avenue each year to take in the street fair’s charms. Visitors will find a plethora of activities to join in as the streets become lined
by a colorful mix of more than 250 vendors and artisans, with food options from around the world and all manner of items on sale, from practical to whimsical. Key to the street fair’s success is its neighborhood, family-friendly feel. Beyond the carnival rides, food and tunes found at other events, there is also a more civic- and arts-related aspect that make’s the Ocean Beach Street Fair unique. Options include participating in or judging the annual chili cook-off, painting a square for a community mural, a skateboard exhibition spon-
sored by OB Surf & Skate and arcade games in the parking lot next to Hodad’s burger joint. Meanwhile Artists’ Alley has doubled in size, now taking up two blocks of Cable Street. Featuring original arts and crafts direct from their creators, it’s the perfect place to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts or something special for the home. There will also be a raffle with prizes from area vendors, with proceeds going to help fund the community’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display.

Spice things up with some savory new chili samplings
The origin of the OB chili cook -off fest
What is that secret ingredient anyway? Rattlesnake? BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON
BY DENNY KNOX | OBMA A little about the Ocean Beach Chili Cook-Off part of the OB Street Fair Festival! In 1984, Ocean Beach had its first Chili Cook-off Festival, founded by Mike Akey, current president of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association. Back in the 1970s, Akey and his father, Angie Scaramuzzo, often traveled to chili cookoffs in Las Vegas, Balboa Island, Cabo San Lucas and Guadalajara, just to mention a few. Once, Scaramuzzo went to the world competition in Rosemond, Calif., to compete with his “Scaramuch Chili.” Scaramuzzo also founded the Lake Havasu City Chili Cook-Off, which

is still going on today. Akey thought about starting a cookoff in Ocean Beach and finally did. For the first three years, the chili cook-offs were sanctioned by the International Chili Society (ICS) and the winner was

eligible to go to the state cook-off, which could have potentially led to the national cook-off. In 1987, Akey and his committee decided to change to an amateur SEE ORIGIN, Page 15
While there are many activities at the Ocean Beach Street Fair, the signature event is undoubtedly the chili cook-off. This year, there will be more than two dozen competitors in the restaurant and amateur categories, with judging based on consistency, smell, color and taste. Cash prizes of up to $200 are awarded to the best chili chefs. Tasting begins at 11 a.m., although the line starts forming at 10 a.m. It’s a testament to the extreme popularity of the contest that the starting time is marked by the blast of a bullhorn. “It’s important that people buy their ticket early if they want a taste of everything,” said Denny Knox,
executive director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association. “We always run out.” If the judging chili is gone, hungry fans still have the option of buying some of the 60 gallons of community chili at $2 a bowl, provided by Shades owner Dave Martin. All the proceeds go to the annual Ocean Beach community Fourth of July fireworks display. “It takes us two days total to make,” Martin said. “It’s a day to prep and then we cook all the way through the event as we man the booth. We just do it for the community.” Martin said the community chili is SEE CHILI, Page 15

Putting ‘Wonder’ in the eyes of children BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON The Ocean Beach Street Fair truly offers something for people of all ages, with a special area called Wonderland set aside for children ages 3-10. Located at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Newport Avenue South, the area is named in honor of an amusement park that — for a short time between 1913 and 1916 — was the star attraction of Ocean Beach before being lost to tides. The Wonderland of today offers a mix of music, rides and activities to keep the younger set and their parents entertained — and perhaps give their mouths a chance to cool from the chili tasting. In addition to traditional fair goodies like kettle corn and cotton candy, as well as healthier options, vendors in the area will offer kid-friendly items. Visitors will find carnival-style rides The Wonderland children’s area is set aside especially for the younger set and their parents. swings and spinning teacups, as well as the area’s most visible landmark — a giant slide. Additionally, various bounce houses and a small merry-go-round will be on site. However, the big draw for youngsters is typically the pony rides, available at a low cost for those six months and older and weighing less than 100 pounds. New this year, organizers have shifted entertainment on the adjacent Wonderland Stage to feature young performers, including the Peninsula-based The First Friday Music Club at 10 a.m. and Revolt-Age at 11 a.m., as well as acoustic and world music acts. Other new activities include face painting, caricature artists, mimes and a children’s safety booth. Sponsored by the Point Loma Masonic Center, the booth will offer free fingerprinting for Children get a little taste of everything at Wonderland, including a giant slide. child identification purposes. Artists’ Alley is a treasure trove of eye candy BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON One of the Ocean Beach Street Fair’s most popular areas, Artists’ Alley, has greatly expanded for this year’s edition of entertainment, doubling in size to include two blocks of Cable Street on either side of Newport Avenue. More than just a bunch of vendor booths, artists who display in the area are selected through a juried process each year. Only handcrafted and unique items are to be found among the more than 65 artisans on hand, along with art demonstrations. Some of the creators taking part will include dimensional collage art by Los Angeles designer Teresa Downer (booth No. 6); Urban Octopus, a clothing company with hand-printed designs (booth
No. 11); and Essential Addictions, (booth No. 39), which makes beauty supplies without alcohol, petroleum or paraben. Of particular note is Poster List, which retails original pop-art posters and frames (booth No. 13). One of the hippest outfit gigs at the moment, its creations can be seen decorating the walls on some of today’s top television programs such as ABC’s “Modern Family.” Also impressive is Hammerhand’s Music (booth No. 3), with handmade dulcimers crafted by acclaimed musician Scott Williams. Williams is renowned for his traditional take on the instrument, with a motto that reads: “Where Modern and Medieval collide.” However fans should be sure to check
out his “HAMMERock” album, in which he recasts tracks by the Eagles, Led Zeppelin and the Cure. Other items to be found include jewelry, hair barrettes, purses, hats, ceramics and even fitness hula hoops — just about anything an art-inspired mind could put together. Despite the down economy, booth space has been at a premium, according to street fair organizers. “We even added spaces and still sold out,” said Denny Knox, executive director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association. “We’re getting phone calls hourly. There are a lot of new start-up businesses this year. I have a feeling it’s because there aren’t very many jobs out there. Since OBSS relocated to their new building at 4976 Newport Avenue in 2010, they have expanded this annual skateboard competition by utilizing their private parking lot located directly in the heart of the street fair. New to this year’s competition is the Wall Ride Contest, designed and built by skate legend, Neil Heddings. Sponsored by LURKVILLE, the Wall Ride Contest will add a whole new dynamic to the contest by featuring two ramps propped up against the OBSS building, creating a 25-foot wall ride. Lineups to make for beach blowout BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Music has always been one of the Ocean Beach Street Fair’s biggest attractions. This year, organizers have put together the strongest bill yet across five stages, with something for just about every taste. More than three dozen performers will take part in this year’s street fair entertainment lineup. “We’ve tried to work it so each stage reaches a crescendo,” said music co-organizer Michael Head. Highlights include Led Zeppelin tribute act Dazed and Confused (Main Stage at 7 p.m.). While the group doesn’t try to replicate the look of the British classic rockers, it manages to painstakingly re-create Led Zep’s
sound, taking in all the hits and playing a truly exciting set. R&B fans won’t want to miss soul and New Orleans jazz-inspired big band The Lady Luck Revue (92107 Stage at 3 p.m.). Essentially the house band for the nearby Temptress Fashions Boutique, the group specializes in dance standards from “Iko Iko” to “Caravan,” all backed by a terrific horn section. Fans of acoustic guitar should be sure to take a listen to singer-songwriter Peter Hall (Bacon Sun Stage at 3 p.m.). Showcasing material from his upcoming album, Hall is a stalwart of the local music scene, an unsung hero, ready to provide an instant Street fair music organizers believe this to be the strongest lineup to date, as more than three dozen performers are set to rock the house

party with his music. Blues aficionados will want to check out the acclaimed Stoney B Blues Band (Artists’ Alley Stage at 4:30 p.m. The band recently released its debut album with a sound so authentic it has been requested as the opening act at BB King’s upcoming Humphrey’s outdoor concert on Aug. 15 — the ultimate honor for a blues musician. Meanwhile, Colombian groove merchants Todo Mundo (Wonderland Stage at 5 p.m.) will showcase their rhythmic sounds near the Wonderland children’s fun zone. Based around the guitar and voice of Santiago Orozco, the trio’s music takes in a kaliedescope of influences, including samba, rumba, reggae and other South American and Caribbean styles. It’s just about impossible not to move your feet to Todo Mundo’s infectious sounds. These are just a few of the day’s highlights. With so much to hear and see, part of the fun is in discovering new and future musical favorites. “There’s actually a lot that I want to make sure and see,” Head said. “As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the most exciting and diverse talent lineups there’s been to date.”
Music organizers said to be prepared for a lineup with a punch this year.

OB STREET FAIR SECURITY IN PLACE — JUST IN CASE With any large gathering, security can be an issue. Luckily, the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off has never had any significant problems, according to organizers. Of course, it’s always a good thing to be prepared. According to security coordinator Mark Schlesinger — in addition to a police presence and a large staff of event volunteers keeping an eye on things — there will be more than a dozen private security guards around the street
fair and in the parking lots. Additionally, the beer garden will have its own separate security detail. “It has been, for years, very mellow with very little security problems,” Schlesinger said. “We’ll get an occasional drunk as the day goes by, but that’s pretty much it. When you look at 70,000 people on a beach weekend, that’s nothing.” — Bart Mendoza

All Aboard for Old Town – Next Stop Stagecoach Days
It’s been over a century since the last stage line operated in San Diego. Beginning in 1857, stage lines passed through rural San Diego moving passengers,
freight, and mail. These new services helped bring the outside world a little closer to this emerging frontier community that we know today as San Diego. For four Saturdays in July and August, come join us as we celebrate travel and transportation in the era of real horsepower – before the train and automobile. Imagine yourself traveling down dusty dirt roads either by horse, wagon, or stagecoach making your way to San Diego in the 1860s. Enjoy an afternoon filled with activities that reflect life in early San Diego and celebrate the West on the move. Through vignettes, demonstrations, living history activities, stories, and songs, visitors will gain an appreciation for early modes of transportation and daily life. Make it a point to check out The Beacon booth! As long as you’re visiting the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival, come by and check out The Peninsula Beacon’s booth and say hello! This is the time of year we set up shop along Newport Avenue (booth No. 110) and host our very popular annual Amateur Photo Contest. Swing by and vote for your favorite. The top three winning photos will be published in The Peninsula Beacon, so your vote counts! All of the photos were taken in the Ocean Beach, Shelter Island, Point Loma, Loma Portal and Sports Arena/ Midway area by local residents. It’s also your chance to share thoughts and comments with the Beacon staff. “The OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival is one of those rare opportunities we have to really min-
gle with readers informally one-onone in the heart of Ocean Beach,” said Beacon editor Kevin McKay. “We love the feedback. It’s really important to us in our effort to be a mirror of this community. Our whole mission is to focus on those stories and tidbits readers can’t get anywhere else. So as you mosey down Newport Avenue, drop by and tell us what you think!” This special street fair edition was delivered to homes and newsracks on June 23, and is being made available at our street fair booth to help you navigate your way around the festival and find all those cool things that make this such a great event. Also be sure to grab a copy of our Ocean Beach / Point Loma / downtown Visitor’s Guide that gives you complete listings of community activities and attractions throughout the year.
Electric Music Studios The Rock & Roll School of OB Since May of 2010, Electric Music Studios has been teaching young rockers, ages 6-18 how to play and perform rock music. We started with an unused facial room, a donated keyboard and a few used amps and guitars in the back suite of The Electric Chair Salon on Newport Avenue. We had 3 students. Today, just a year later we are approaching 50 students and run 2 rehearsal groups each Sunday. We have added our own performance venue where our kids can rehearse and eventually record music. Our Studio Band has performed at pubs, fairs, and even Indie Fest this past year to the cheers of audiences. They will be performing this week at the Ocean Beach Street Fair's Wonderland Stage at 12 noon, followed by another performance at our venue, Electric Landyland at 2 p.m. They will also be headlining a Farmers Market showcase on June 29. One of the most surprising aspects of this comprehensive music program is the price; just $50 per week for 3-4 hours of instruction and social interaction. That includes one 45 minute private lesson each week, plus a group rehearsal on Sundays. Our program is perfor-
mance based which teaches students their individual roles in a band. EMS rehearsals are like a rock and roll social club. If you have a son or daughter who is not into football or other team sports, our program can provide the perfect activity. I've seen shy kids blossom in this program because of the confidence they get from learning together and performing together. They are paired with others on songs, so they learn communications skills while working together to perfect a song. Our instructors/group leaders are college educated with music degree's and they are all in working bands. You can check them out on our website: www.electricmusicstudios.com and on Facebook: electric Music Studios, where we post often. EMS will be opening it's doors to the public on Saturday, June 25 during the OB Street Fair from 10-5 p.m. There will be a live performance/jam session by some of our advanced students at 2 p.m. and we will be on hand to answer questions about our program. come see why EMS is the fastest growing and most talked about Rock & Roll program in San Diego.

A tip of the hat to volunteer Mike Akey! BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON The Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers putting in long hours behind the scenes so the rest of us can enjoy the day. According to Denny Knox, executive director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA), there are 140 event volunteers and 35 people on the OBMA’s Street Fair Committee. “We have groups of all ages that turn out,” Knox said. “Many are here year after year. It’s something people really look forward to.” While every volunteer is important and many have been with the street fair for decades, Knox had especially high praise for one who truly does stand out: Mike Akey. Akey has been a part of the Ocean Beach Street Fair since the beginning, organizing the very first chili cook-off in 1984. He now serves as president of the OBMA.
said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do this. As much as possible, everyone involved is a volunteer. They take care of literally anything that needs to get done.” Originally in charge of all the operational aspects of the event, Akey’s initial duties included everything from dealing with chefs to site logistics. However, after more than two decades of pitching in, his job has simplified somewhat. “Now that I’m a little older, I’m just a judge,” he said good-naturedly. Truth be told, however, he is the head judge. Besides judges, Akey said there will be eight volunteers assigned to the chili cook-off area doing everything from Mike Akey has been a mover and shaker cleanup to crowd control. But there behind the scenes — and in front — at the won’t be any favoritism when it comes to Ocean Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off since Courtesy photo trying out samples. the beginning. “Actually, the volunteers are so busy running around and taking care of “Volunteers are what has kept this things that they usually don’t even get to event running for all these years,” Akey taste the chili,” Akey said.

They’ll let their customers know they’re going to be here. They just get really wrapped up in the expertise of making chili,” he said. While recipes might be under lock and key, Martin said he is amused by some of the wild ingredients that have gone into past pots. “Over the years, I’ve seen people put chopped up rattlesnake in, or fire gun powder into it. It’s all good, but
Denny Knox, executive director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA), has been with the street fair since its beginnings. She has seen it grow from a block-long event to which organizers brought their own picnic tables and chairs for public use to its transformation into today’s mega outdoor festival. She said there have been some changes along the way. “Today, we have a double fence around the beer garden,” she said. “Back then, in more innocent times, we just had a ribbon stretched around the area.” She considers the event to be the “ultimate celebration of the neighborhood. It definitely has put us on the map.” Working at the OBMA office, she sees the street fair bringing people into the community — both before and after the event itself. “Especially for a few weeks after, the town is packed,” Knox said. “For some reason, we especially get a lot of visitors from Canada.” Music is always one of the street fair’s most popular attractions, with five stages offering up everything from kid rockers to country crooners. This year’s performers were booked by Winston’s Beach Club owner Ted Wigler and Head Trap Music Studio chief Michael Head. “We got over 300 applications from all over,” said Head. “We don’t favor one

The move to Veteran’s Plaza on the grass really filled the bill and has been the site for our chili cook-off ever since, with more than three times the number of contestants! Thanks to Mike Akey and his father for founding the Ocean Beach Chili Cook-Off so that we can all enjoy this again.

type of music over another and didn’t try to book artists from just Ocean Beach. I’m really proud of the cross-section of artists that are taking part. If you look across the stages, we have a really nice mix of things from reggae to jazz. We simply went with the best artists we could find, although my favorite performers on the day, the Celtic rock band the Fooks, do happen to be locals,” he said. The Main Stage sits at the foot of Newport Avenue next to the beer garden. Here, in addition to music, you’ll also hear the playing of the National Anthem (by T.J.) as the event officially kicks off at 10:15 a.m. The announcement of this year’s chili cook-off winner is set for 3:40 p.m. For anyone wishing to avoid the traffic and parking situations inherent in such large gatherings, there will be four free shuttles running continuously throughout the day from two outer parking lots at Robb Field and The Sunrunner Lot, with dropoff directly at Artists’ Alley. Meanwhile, those opting for a greener form of transportation will find a new bicycle valet service in front of Winston’s on Bacon Street, courtesy of the Bicycle Coalition. Since the Ocean Beach Street Fair is such a big undertaking, planning is a year-round thing. But organizers do take a brief pause.
