Former strip club redressed to help sex-trafficking victims By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

A

former strip club in the Point Loma area is to be converted into a nonprofit center serving sex-trafficking victims to be known as the San Diego Freedom Center. The new center, at a site now being renovated, will be a clearinghouse for sex-trafficking victims allowing them to get information on a variety of subjects including shelters, counseling, education and job opportunities. The Peninsula Beacon held a Q&A with the San Diego Freedom Center’s new executive director, Kristen Zimmermann. Beacon: How did your become executive director for the new Freedom Center? Zimmermann: I was first involved in anti-human trafficking efforts 14 years ago while working with an NGO (non-governmental organization) that prioritized education opportunities for at-risk populations. Since then, I have worked with various non-profits and my passion for working in anti-human trafficking has grown. Most recently, I have been working in the mental health field, at a community agency, where I specialize in trauma treatment. There are complex layers of trauma

Kristen Zimmermann

experienced by those who have been trafficked, which led me to get involved with the work of the Freedom Center. Beacon: What services and programs will the Freedom Center offer and what will its mission be? Zimmermann: As a nonprofit, the center is compelled by the belief that human trafficking can and will be eliminated in San Diego and survivors will receive the holistic support they need to flourish. The San Diego Freedom Center will provide free resources specifically for female survivors, age 18 and older, for their holistic needs in mind. Center staff will provide trauma-informed counseling, life skills, and job training,

intensive case management to connect survivors to medical, legal, and educational resources, as well as basic needs like food, safe shelter, and clothing. Beacon: Who will be served at the new center and who will be on its staff? Zimmermann: The Freedom Center staff members will include trauma-informed mental health counselors, case managers, career development experts, and others who are available 24/7 to meet with trafficking survivors. Beacon: How is the former strip club is being repurposed as a resource center for victims of sex trafficking/violence? Zimmermann: A space that once sought to dehumanize women and reduce them to a commodity will now be a place where women can experience healing and hope. The center will partner with women to meet their holistic needs and empower them to flourish. Beacon: Explain to us what “trauma bonding” is and how that can be combated? How will you remove “barriers” so that women can return to more normal occupations? Zimmermann: Trauma bonding occurs when victims of abuse form a strong sense of loyalty and attachment to their abuser. To form the bond, the abuser will establish a strong connection, and often alternate between kindness

and abusive or violent behavior. The victim, from a space of survival, often becomes loyal to their abuser. Trauma bonding is common in abusive relationships and sex trafficking. Because of the psychological nature of trauma bonding, it often takes women several attempts to leave trafficking. The Freedom Center will remove barriers by providing holistic support and a consistent presence in the community to help women know they have other options and will be supported on their journey.

Beacon: How long is the remodel of the new facility going to take? When do you expect the Freedom Center to be open and serving clients? Is this facility unique? Zimmermann: We anticipate the remodel will take about a year and the facility is expected to be serving women in the fall of 2022. The story of the center is unique, in that it is a repurposed strip club that will now combat sexual exploitation. Read more online at sdnews.com

After multiple resignations, Ocean Beach Town Council to hold special election

I

By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

n July, Ocean Beach Town Council president Mark Winkie resigned over an undisclosed “indiscretion,” and weeks later the 15-member board needs to fill five vacant seats caused by four other board resignations. Seven weeks after Winkie’s resignation, following his receiving an email from 10 members expressing a lack of confidence in his

leadership, more questions than answers remain about the situation and what led up to it. What is certain is that Winkie, after receiving the vote of no confidence from 10 board colleagues, sent his own letter to all 14 of them taking responsibility for an unnamed personal indiscretion. He also sought unsuccessfully to speak to other board members all individually. “No one ever gave me specifics

OBTC SPECIAL ELECTION bylaws to go into effect before we move forward with the special election with 11 interested candidates.”

A total of 11 candidates have applied to fill five open seats on Ocean Beach Town Council’s 15-member board following the resignation of president Mark Winkie and four others. Due to the unusually large number of resignations, the board opted to change its bylaws, rather than appoint new members, to allow for a special election to fill the vacant council seats. The 11 candidates vying for those five open town council positions are Anna Firicano, Ashley Carrino Teijelo, Benjamin Blevins, Deanna Polk, Gregory Winter, James Hall, Jim Musgrove, Kimberly A Harrell, Mara Cunningham, Nikki Fica, and Tracy Dezenzo. “Our bylaws implored us to fill the five seats by appointing them,” noted acting OBTC president Corey Bruins. “But the board at our last meeting this month voted to go through the process of amending the bylaws so that we can then run a special election. There is a 10-day waiting period for the new

At the behest of 25 civic leaders who signed a letter to the council asking for an election rather than the appointment of replacement board members, OBTC agreed to host a hybrid meeting on Aug. 25 introducing the 11 board candidates before the vote to select five of them to fill the vacant seats. There are 15 seats on the Ocean Beach Town Council Board of Directors and OBTC members elect board directors for two-year terms. Half of the board stands for election every year. Eligible candidates for the OBTC board must be over 18 years of age and either live, work, own property, or operate a business in Ocean Beach (92107). The OB Town Council hosts public meetings on the fourth Wednesday every month, except November and December, at the Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

of exactly what the problem was with my leadership,” said Winkie, pointing out he was unanimously re-elected as OBTC board president and would have been up for re-election before year’s end. “And there’s a massive ambiguity about what the board now says about the reasons why they asked me to resign.” “There was not a single indiscretion,” answered Corey Bruins, interim OBTC board president about some board members’ request for Winkie’s resignation. “The quest to find out what Mark did, that’s a dead-end trail. What happened is, over a period of time, a group of folks on the board, that wound up being 10 originally, came to the conclusion that they had lost confidence in Mark’s ability to lead without bias. And the reasons why any one member of that group lost confidence in Mark are their reasons.” Added Bruins: “It’s a situation where a group of people lost faith in the leader of the organization, and the reasons why are not singular, and are personal to people’s perception of Mark’s ability to effectively, and without bias, lead the town council. That’s it really. That’s the story.” Winkie believes he’s been unfairly and inappropriately treated and judged by some of his town council colleagues. “The reality is that they made a moral judgment on aspects of my

personal life, that a lot of people feel should remain private, that they shouldn’t be weighing in on things that are happening in my personal life,” he said. “That’s the crux of it. I don’t have any answers from them (board), and the community still doesn’t have any answers from them as to why they asked me to resign.” Bruins said the town council’s goal now is to put this divisive incident to rest and to return to fulfilling its mission of representing OB. “Everybody’s goal is to get back to work for OB,” he said adding, “We’re volunteers and we have no employees, no staff, and we run a lean operation. Our board of directors is our primary workforce. Our board is (now) tied up in work that is not centered around things that we should be doing, service to the community, and philanthropy. “Those are the things we should be thinking about. The story that we need to be telling is about electing five new faces into those five open seats, and hopefully getting people with the capacities and skills to give this town council what it needs, to show up and give your time away to the benefit of OB.”

Mark Winkie

Winkie said he stands on his record of nearly five years on OBTC’s board. “I vehemently deny that I led that board in any way that was not fair and forthright and with purpose,” he said. “And the unfortunate situation now is that you’ve got some people in the community who feel that this is more like a club trying to be filled with close friends of the leadership on the town council. That’s clearly not what the town council is supposed to be about. It’s supposed to be about representing the community. And that doesn’t seem to be what’s going on right now. It’s a mess.”

Mayor, local leaders kick off construction of Pure Water Project

M

ayor Todd Gloria, along with state and federal leaders, formally kicked off construction of Phase 1 of the City’s Pure Water program last week, which will provide nearly 50% of the City’s drinking water by 2035 and dramatically reduce the need for imported water. Pure Water will use a purification technology to clean recycled water and produce safe drinking water. The program offers a cost-effective investment for San Diego’s water needs and will provide a reliable, sustainable supply. Phase 1 of the project includes 11 construction projects, including the North City Pure Water Facility and Pump Station, which is being built across the road from the North City Water Reclamation Plant. The other Phase 1 projects include pump stations and pipelines. The Pure Water facility will treat recycled water produced at the nearby North City Water Reclamation Plant to purified water standards. The Pure Water facility will feature a state-of-theart, five-step treatment process that includes ozonation, biological activated carbon filters, membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light with advanced oxidation. Currently, the City imports as much as 90% of its water. The Pure Water Program will supposedly cut that need in half. With threats of recurring droughts in

California, having a local water resource is more important than ever. Two Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) loans from the U.S. EPA are providing funding for up to $733.5 million toward the Pure Water Program’s Phase I projects. Additional funding for the construction of the project will come from Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loans in the amount of $665.1 million, and more than $80 million in federal and state grants, which do not need to be repaid. The Cit y w i l l a lso re ceive a $340 credit from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for every acre-foot (enough water to supply up to four households for a year) produced in the Pure Water Program for 25 years. This corresponds to a credit of $285.6 million over the life of the agreement. Once operational, the new Pure Water facility on Eastgate Mall will have a production capacity of up to 34 million gallons a day. The purified water from the Pure Water facility will be conveyed via pipeline to Miramar Reservoir. The water will then be processed through the Miramar Water Treatment Plant before being delivered to customers. More information about the City’s Pure Water Program is available at purewatersd.org. Point Loma Artist Wins Second Place Julie Anderson, an artist and resident of Point Loma, San Diego, California, won the second-place award in the continuingly competitive July 2021 Member’s exhibition “Complement Conversations” held in the gallery of the San Diego Watercolor Society at 2825 Dewey Rd, Suite 105 Building 202, San Diego, CA; and also available to view on the website, www.sdws.org. Anderson’s painting entitled “Love Triangle” was selected by prominent artist and juror Dean Mitchell for this honor. Mitchell said of the painting, “The painting is interesting in composition, texture and human relationships. The unusual view point creates interesting shapes around the figures that reinforces the powerful observation of intimacy.” Julie was born and raised outside Philadelphia. She holds a BA degree in

art from the University of Delaware and completed graduate studies in art and art history at the Tyler School, Temple University. Retiring in 2002, she began her watercolor journey in 2003, beginning with Continuing Education classes followed by SDWS workshops. Over time, florals and landscapes changed to figures based on her photos and figure drawings. In 2013 she began painting on tracing paper affixed to watercolor paper which provides the interesting texture seen in her painting. Recent work explores abstract acrylic/watercolor painting possibilities. Julie’s paintings have been juried into many exhibitions including SDWS Member and International, WFWS, NWS Member and International, NWS/China Small Image Exchange, and Fallbrook Signature American Watermedia. Julie’s work may be seen in the

monthly SDWS Member Shows, where she frequently wins awards, in periodic Point Loma Artists Association events, and on her website www.julieandersonartist.com. The Gallery Exhibit will run through Saturday August 29, 2021 in the SDWS gallery online at sdws.org/galleryart.php?cat=6968 where the paintings can be both viewed and purchased from the Online Store.

Gubernatorial Recall Election set for Sept. 14; What do San Diegans think? There are similarities – and differences – in the upcoming Tuesday, Sept. 14 California Gubernatorial Recall Election compared with the last successful one in 2003. That election saw thenGov. Gray Davis replaced by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. One major difference this time around is there are only about a third as many candidates, 46, compared with the crowded field of 135 candidates who sought to replace Davis on the October 2003 ballot. The 2003 recall was prompted by some actions taken by Davis and his predecessor, Gov. Pete Wilson. Some people were upset with Davis’ decision to block the enactment of Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot initiative to deny illegal aliens state benefits and to require reporting of illegal alien applicants for benefits to federal immigration officials. This year’s Sept. 14 recall field of candidates to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom includes GOP politicians, a reality TV personality, a YouTuber, a retired detective, a cannabis advocate, several business owners, and a new-age shaman. Unlike 2003 however, this recall election does not include anyone with Schwarzenegger’s star power or appeal. The Recall Election ballot will have two parts. Voters will be asked if Newsom should be recalled

(removed). Following that recall question, all qualified replacement candidates for the office of governor will be listed. Write-in replacement candidates for the office of governor can also run. That Certified List of Write-in Candidates will be available on Sept. 3. Polls leading up to the special election are indicating that Republicans, in general, are enthusiastic about it, while Democrats are lukewarm about it, which may or may not be reflected in partisan turnout on Sept. 14. Though Newsom could be hurt by strong GOP voter turnout and weak Democrat turnout, Democrats outnumber Republicans statewide by a wide margin of 22 percentage points. Newsom also has a large war chest. His camp reportedly has raised $32 million to fight his recall, including several donations of $1 million or more. State law allows the target of a recall to accept unlimited sums of money. Challengers, however, can only accept a maximum of $32,400 from each individual donor. If the recall should be successful, it could have serious statewide and national implications, as a Republican governor in California could alter the balance of power in Washington, D.C. If 88-yearold Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) were to retire or die before her term ends, while

In Memory: Phyllis Littleton Phyllis “C” Charlene Littleton died peacefully in her home on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the age of 87. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio (December 5, 1933) Phyllis was a resident of San Diego for over 55 years. She was outgoing, opinionated, caring and quite the independent woman. A lifelong Republican, she volunteered on many campaigns and several community organizations. She will be remembered lovingly for her thoughtfulness and commitment to family and friends. a Republican governor is in office, that would give a GOP leader the opportunity to appoint her replacement and, presumably, restore a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate.

WHAT DO SAN DIEGANS THINK? With the 2021 Newsom recall election about three weeks away, San Diego Community Newspaper Group did a random poll, not scientifically valid, to gauge the mood of San Diego beachfront residents on whether they believe California’s current governor should be recalled. Here’s what they had to say: “I have a lways v iewed California's recall initiative process as poorly conceived, regardless of which party is initiating a recall,” said Jerry Lohla of Point Loma. “Either party can spend only a few million dollars to gather signatures on petitions in order to cause a recall election costing more than $250 million. This is a waste of taxpayers' money for entirely political purposes. “Newsom is managing the pandemic rationally by following the science as COVID surges and wanes. The California economy is strong and growing and the state has a budget surplus of over $25 billion. The criticisms of Newsom are part and parcel of our nation's political divide,” Lohla said. “I support the recall, but not because I think whoever might succeed Newsom will be any more successful (or, to be more accurate, less unsuccessful) than he has been,” said David Dick of Point Loma. “Instead I support the recall to send a clear and unambiguous message to Sacramento that the voters can plainly see what our political leaders refuse to or can't: California is in serious trouble and headed in the wrong direction and something must be done about it. The first step must be to end one-party rule.” “I, along with nearly 8 million other Californians comprising almost 62% of the state's voters, elected Newsom in 2018,” said Tom Coat of Pacific Beach. “Now, a much smaller minority of voters is taking advantage of recall rules

badly in need of change to attempt to cancel out our votes. That's not how a democracy should work. “I would never seek to recall any elected official whose primary focus during a historically deadly pandemic has consistently been to protect the health and lives of his constituents. The state finance department puts the cost of the recall at $276 million. For $276 million we could provide 55,200 college scholarships of $5,000 to low and middle-income students. I could support spending $276 million on scholarships that would change lives. I can't on a ridiculous recall effort,” Coat said. “Although Newsom deserves replacement, the more than $200 million costs of removing him from office is too expensive, since the next gubernatorial election is quite soon – November 2022,” said Phyllis Minick of La Jolla. “Newsom's mismanagement of California is demonstrated by our uncontrolled fire damage, failure to ensure a safe electrical grid, neglect of water conservation, overwhelming homelessness, uninformed anti-COVID mask mandate, attempted to overturn of Prop 13, highest gas prices in the U.S., and among the lowest national K-12 school rankings (37th place). This state, which is bigger and industrially better than most countries warrants more efficient leadership,” Minick said. “California's ‘two-part ballot’ recall process is ridiculously flawed and fundamentally unfair,” said Karl Rand of PB. “It should be replaced with a single-question ballot that allows the targeted incumbent to run head to head, directly against any and all replacement candidates. “The good news: there is a pending California Senate Bill (SCA 3 - Allen) that would end this twopart ballot folly for future recalls. The bad news: SCA 3 will not apply to this recall. As a matter of fundamental fairness, I urge everyone to vote no on this recall, and push for the passage of SCA 3 to repair our broken recall process,” Rand said. “He should not be recalled,” said Glen Rasmussen of La Jolla. “There are no valid grounds because his

actions have been consistent with the will of the majority of Californians.” “I feel it is a waste of time and money in pursuing the recall since the general election when Newsom is up for reelection, is next year,” said Ellen Citrano of PB. “Recalls should be used for egregious behavior, failures or criminal acts and not just because some people don’t like or agree with what a leader did during an unprecedented crisis.” “Nothing in his actions warrants this hugely expensive $250 million waste of taxpayers' dollars,” said William Marsh of PB. “COVID 19 has been an extremely difficult convoluted moving target requiring a huge learning curve along the way, and it’s still evolving. At least Newsom has been smart enough to ‘try to follow’ the evolving science and have the state ‘try to balance’ support for saving lives while minimizing the impact on our economy.” “Important programs like California’s 30 x 30 Initiative and California’s Truth and Healing Council will probably not be continued by any of the front-running Republicans who may become California’s governor if the recall is successful,” said Karin Zirk of PB. “The 30 x 30 initiative is focused on nature-based solutions to mitigate the climate catastrophe. I also feel that Gov. Newsom has gone where no politician has gone before in acknowledging the genocide of our indigenous communities, including the Kumeyaay whose traditional lands encompass the Rose Creek watershed and the community of Pacific Beach, which is built on stolen Kumeyaay land,” Zirk said. “Newsom should not be recalled,” said Nanci Dalzell of PB. “The expense of this voting process as we continue to battle a pandemic, continues to represent denial of reality from anti-vax groups who have led us into this COVID surge by refusing masks and the vaccine. I support vaccine passports and mandates that are necessary to eliminate this pandemic. We need to heal our communities and protect our beautiful state.” Read more online at sdnews.com

The Stronghold’s coloring fundraiser to help out jiu-jitsu academy By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

A

Point Loma jiu-jitsu academy is spreading the word about a coloring contest fundraiser it’s hosting to help find its post-pandemic new normal. The Stronghold at 2176 Chatsworth Blvd. is a jiu-jitsu school founded by Raquel Regno Cusi and her family, which has been serving the Peninsula community for almost 14 years. But as with other small family-owned businesses, COVID has challenged the Stronghold’s well-being. “We were grateful enough to receive some government assistance, but since March 2020 we were forced to shut down for more than eight months,” said Regno Cusi. “That severely impacted our ability to teach classes and serve our students. Zoom classes worked for a few months, but jiu-jitsu is a contact sport, and many of our students did not have a household partner or mats to train on at home.” During the COVID shutdown, Regno Cusi continued to think of ways to help her academy financially. Most recently, The Stronghold launched a kids' T-shirt coloring contest. Through this interactive and fun activity families, even if they are not currently active members, can participate.

“We’re back to full operations, but government assistance is not pouring through for everybody,” noted the academy’s owner. “So we came up with this coloring contest to help us with coming back successfully.” Regno Cusi noted that some of her Point Loma clients “have elderly parents, which has made them more COVID-conscious.” Somewhat surprisingly, she added, is that it has been easier to recruit new clients than it has been to retain older ones. “What we’re getting now is people coming in with their siblings or housing partners, Regno Cusi said. “It’s not the same crowd we had pre-Covid.” Jiu-jitsu is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat, unarmed or with a minor weapon, that can be used to subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents. Certain styles of jiu-jitsu have been used to develop many modern martial arts and combat sports such as judo and aikido. Jui-Jitsu practitioners learned that the most efficient methods for neutralizing an armed enemy took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws. These techniques were developed around using an attacker's energy against them, rather than directly opposing it. Regno Cusi noted Stronghold’s coloring contest is a great way to keep kids creative and motivated.

The coloring graphic she’s using was illustrated by Karen Alleluia, a long-time jiu-jitsu student. Entering the contest is simple. Entrants purchase a coloring kit, which includes a baseball tee or T-shirt and a pack of fabric markers. Artists/kids then decorate the shirt and with a parent’s help, before submitting a photo to a panel of judges. There are three divisions to enter: Tots (ages 1-5), Kids (6-12), and Teens (13-18). The Stronghold will be giving away prize baskets including gift cards from local San Diego businesses for first-, second-and third-place winners respectively for each division. Photo submissions must be entered by Aug. 28 for the first round, and winners will be announced on Sept. 1. The second round will begin shortly after with a deadline of Dec. 28. Proceeds from the contest will benefit The Stronghold helping it build a solid foundation for the Stronghold Kids Jiu Jitsu Scholarship program, which provides training, lessons, and uniforms to children in need in the community. 921OB logo T-shirts are back at James Gang By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

T

he 921OB T-shirts are back by popular demand. In partnership with OB resident Claudia Jack, James Gang Co. printers at 4851 Newport Ave. are excited to be exclusively printing the 921OB logo on T-shirts, which come in women’s, men’s, and unisex design styles. Noting 921OB “was born in Ocean Beach by a friend of mine,” Jack said, “We had an agreement that, when she gave it up, I could apply for a business license. And that’s what I did.” Jack pointed out the 9210B logo has been so successful because “it is a fresh token of your OB community, a simple design and people are proud to wear it.” Added Jack: “James Gang and I talked about becoming a partner to sell the shirt. The reason I picked them is they were created in OB: local print, local sales in a local shop. And using a local paper to let people know where they can now purchase merchandise. “Every time I wear one, all I hear is, ‘Where did you get that shirt?’ I am very excited about the shirts being printed and sold at James Gang.” Jack added a “sister” T-shirt, 921PL will also be available “in the near future.” The Jack-James Gang duo have teamed on the 921PL logo design, which the printer will be offering soon in Point Loma

High colors for the beginning of the school year. “People love the 921OB design and have been asking Claudia where she got her shirt so they could buy one,” said Jim Berdeguez, co-owner of James Gang. “We’re thrilled to now be offering this famous OB logo here at James Gang. In fact, in addition to the three different garment styles, we're now offering a 921OB vinyl sticker as well to keep up with the demand. People can just walk in and purchase a T-shirt or sticker. We are printing more as needed when we need to restock.” James Gang Co. is a veteran-owned print shop offering silk screening and paper printing for retail and businesses, plus a

selection of casual apparel for sale. The James Gang printers was started in Ocean Beach in 1976 by the three eldest brothers, Ron, Rich, and Greg, as an offshoot of a small public relations and advertising agency Ron had begun earlier with a partner. Initially called First Impressions, the company's focus gradually evolved from photo work into T-shirt screen printing. James Gang initially started above the mini-mart on Newport, before moving to where Mallory's Furniture is now a year later. In the early '90s, the printer moved to Bacon Street. The printer moved from 1931 Bacon St. at Santa Monica to 4851 Newport Ave. on OB’s main drag about four years ago. Over time, the James Gang's business grew and changed. Offset printing operations were added in 1990 after expanding into the Bacon Street location. The cornerstone beach printing business has played prominently in OB’s history, especially its special events: the year-end Christmas tree planting and parade and Fourth of July fireworks. “Actually, it was my late brother, Rich James, who started it,” said Mike James of his family’s historic contribution to the beach community’s annual holiday tree planting and parade. Obituary: George William ‘Bill’ Kettenburg III – Point Loma businessman and boat builder

Point Loma native George William “Bill” Kettenburg III, who carried on the tradition of his father who started Kettenburg Boat Works/Kettenburg Marine, died at age 95 on June 8. Kettenburg III was vice president of the company that was started by his father in the backyard of their La Playa family home in 1918. A n a l l-a rou nd at h lete, Kettenburg attended Loma Portal Elementary and Point Loma Junior/Senior High School, where he excelled at both baseball and basketball. “He was hit in the head with a pitch (no batting helmets then) and was in a coma for two weeks,” noted his daughter, Karen Kettenburg-Wheeler who added her dad also “made an unassisted triple play and was featured in ‘Ripley's Believe it or Not.’ He said he needed to make up for committing two errors in that game.” Kettenburg Marine started from a simple set of blueprints and grew into a renowned

boating business. In 1906, George William Kettenburg, Sr. purchased a $6,000 engine from an expensive car. He then bought a boat from Dr. Foster, a neighbor, and installed this engine. In 1904, George William Kettenburg, Jr. was born. When he was age 15, he and his father decided to build a boat of their own. They bought a set of plans for a 22-foot boat. When they laid the plans on the floor, George, Jr. said it would be better to lengthen it by two feet. George, Sr. decided to follow his sons’ advice and ended up with a boat that was faster and better in design. George Kettenburg, Jr. graduated from high school and went right into his own boat-building business in his father’s backyard. He got an idea to make his living building boats. “I need some money,” he told his father. “I think I can build boats and make a living at the same time.” During World War II, George, Jr. built 90 plane-rearming boats, along with his new design of sailboats. In 1935, the Kettenburg’s entered the fishing boat business. When first starting out, little did they know it would be their largest moneymaker. In 1948, the Kettenburg’s set a record for the boat-building business. At one time, Kettenburg Marine hauled more boats to be repaired than any other boatyard in the United States — more than 3,000 boats per year. Kettenburg Marine was also one of the largest marine suppliers in the country. Read more online at sdnews.com

More than 9,400 San Diego households helped with rent relief Mayor Todd Gloria announced that 9,448 San Diego households have been helped with $77.9 million in a first round of rent relief through the City’s COVID-19 Housing Stability Assistance Program. “San Diego has done a great job of getting rental assistance into the hands of families and individuals who have been hit hard by the economic impacts of COVID-19, and more dollars are on the way to help those who are still having trouble paying rent and utilities.” Gloria said. “I strongly encourage those who might need assistance

to apply as soon as possible, and I hope everyone will help get the word out about this critically important program.” Gloria was joined at a news conference in Pacific Beach last week by U.S. Congressman Scott Peters, San Diego City Council President Jennifer Campbell, San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) president and CEO Richard C. Gentry, and Eric Norris, a Pacific Beach resident who received help from the Housing Stability Assistance Program. The City of San Diego, in partnership with SDHC, has

already distributed 93 percent of the $83.7 million of federal rent relief funds it initially received in March. An additional $51 million in funding from the President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan is available now and another $34 million in federal funding, which was allocated through the state of California, will be authorized for disbursement this fall. “The security of having a roof over our heads took a new meaning as we dealt with the fallout of this pandemic,” said Peters, whose district includes Pacific

Beach. “The housing relief funds delivered San Diegans stability, ensured their public health and provided greater peace of mind. The efforts of our local, state and federal governments, and agencies are another shining example of how we can serve those in need during this unprecedented event in our history.” “People’s lives have been turned upside down because of this pandemic," said Campbell, who also represents Pacif ic Beach. "Thanks to the leadership in our communities, this program has made all the difference

in making sure residents are not displaced and has provided an added layer of support during these perilous times.” SDHC has received more than 17,400 applications since the program launched. More than 16,500 additional applications have been started but have not yet been submitted. “This program continues to provide relief and hope to families with low income who have struggled to pay their rent and utilities during the pandemic,” SGentry said. Pointers show they're back despite heartbreaking loss in opener BY SCOTT HOPKINS | The Beacon

A

ny doubts that Point Loma football is back were dispelled last Friday night as the Pointers put on a gutty two-way performance that had higher-ranked Ramona on the ropes before a call by a game official gave the Bulldogs a final last-minute chance to score and defeat the Pointers in a 19-14 heartbreaker. The Pointers were holding a 14-12 lead in the fourth quarter and had a chance to put the game away as they marched towards the goal line after a Ramona punt gave them the ball at the Bulldogs 42-yard line. But after two big gains on running plays, the ball was knocked loose from a Pointer runner and the Bulldogs recovered. The Bulldogs went to the air, and it appeared the Pointers still were in command when senior Mauro Garcia snared an interception at the Pointer three-yard-line to blunt a Bulldog drive. Again, two nice runs took the Pointers out of danger but once again a fumble was recovered by Ramona. With Ramona still passing on every play as the game's final minutes ticked away, a Pointer defender made a beautiful play in the corner of the end zone to bat away a Bulldog pass as cheers erupted. But a game official 80 feet away launched a yellow penalty flag. Pass interference was called on the Pointer defender making Pointer coaches livid, as it appeared there was no illegal contact on the play, one that, in effect, resulted in

‘We gave it our all. This program is so much better this year. We're going to practice harder every day. I never want to feel like this again.’ – Senior team captain Gerry Solares

handing the game to the Bulldogs. With new life, Ramona ran the ball in for the final score and a 19-14 victory, two of their touchdowns coming in the final seconds of each half. "We gave them everything they could handle," a disappointed but upbeat Pointer head coach Joel Allen said on the sidelines moments after praising his distraught players. "We put a couple of balls on the ground and some calls didn't go our way, but I am so proud of these kids. We fought to the very end." Going into the game the Bulldogs were ranked No. 14 in the San Diego CIF section, the Pointers No. 38. The Pointers drew first blood in the opening quarter when junior QB Jackson Emerson completed an 11-yard scoring pass to senior Mauro Garcia. A booming PAT kick by sophomore Aaron Lee gave the Dogs a 7-0 lead. After an apparent Bulldog TD was called back in the second quarter they finally scored with 12 seconds left before intermission. Ramona scored again on its first possession of the third quarter to take a 12-7 lead. The second Pointer score came

on their next drive. Emerson connected with senior Kayden Nantkes in the end zone, with Lee's PAT giving Point Loma a 14-12 lead that lasted until the tumultuous fourth quarter. Junior running back Noah Turbeville had a big night with multiple carries of 10 yards or more. The Pointers next face off against Central High of El Centro in a home game to be played at Mission Bay High on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. The Spartans, ranked No. 25 in San Diego, lost their opener 33-14 to Mt. Carmel last week. Then on Sept. 3, the Pointers trot to La Jolla for a resumption of the famed battle for "The Shoe," a trophy that went to the winner of the annual battle between the teams. The Vikings are enjoying great success, taking the Pointers' place in the top-ranked Western League and moving up to the No. 6 position in San Diego rankings and No. 1 in the Pointers' Div. II. The Vikings opened with a 42-13 win over nearby Bishop's.

EXTRA POINTS

Sportfishing captain ‘living the dream’ running charters from Point Loma By DAVE SCHWAB | The Beacon

SPORTFISHING CHARTERS

E

arly on, Point Loma native Capt. Fred Huber had to choose between going to a four-year college or breaking into sport fishing. “As much as my mom wanted one of her five kids to get a fouryear degree, and I was her last chance – fishing just won out,” admitted Huber who, since 2004, has operated sportfishing boats for charter out of Point Loma along with business partner Steve Peterson. “Steve runs a majority of the trips on the Mission Belle, and I take a majority of the Daily Double trips,” Huber said of their two crafts, which have a maximum carrying capacity of 29 passengers. Pointing out that “we do the majority of our business between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day,” Huber noted that San Diego sportfishing “is a tourism-driven industry specializing in summer fishing with warmer water.” Sportfishing offers six-hour (half day), 12-hour (full-day), and six-person (six-pack) excursion options. “The six-hour half-day trips are mostly tourists coming from

other states like Arizona,” Huber said. “The next step is the full day, 12 hours, where the boats go out

much farther. There are also a very limited number of smaller private boats for charter.” As problematic as COVID has been, Huber said it hastened to do something he and Peterson had been thinking about for some time with their business. “The silver lining to COVID for Steve and I was that we had been talking about limiting the number of people on our boats,” Huber said pointing out, “which was hard to justify when you’re successful. But with COVID requiring six feet of social distancing and adding up your rail space, it brought it (capacity) down to 24 passengers.” Limiting on-board capacity has proven to be both good and bad for sportfishing clients. “We raised our ticket prices a fair amount,” said Huber while pointing out the less-crowded space “is better for the customer, a better experience in general.” Chartering a sportfishing boat is a good deal.

“It’s such a value,” contended Huber. “It’s just such a competitive market. People have no idea what a buyer’s market it is.” Noting it costs about $70 per person on weekdays, $75 per person on weekends, to charter a sportfishing boat for six hours, Huber said that translates into “a little over $10 an hour to be on the ocean. It’s a great way to get outdoors. All the boats are good and everyone running them is passionate about what they do.” Huber added the daily price of a half-day fishing charter doesn’t include fishing equipment or a fishing license. “But it does include your bait and your safe passage to and from the fishing grounds, and a charming crew that is at your beck and call,” he said. Sportfishing was described by Huber as a “high-risk, high-reward” proposition. “We’ve landed some big fish,” he said. “We’ve caught 187-pound and 205-pound bluefin tuna. It was on one of the guy’s bucket lists: catching a fish that weighs more than you. That would work for me.” A happy camper out on the ocean, Huber’s living his dream job operating Point Loma sportfishing

charters. “I was told, ‘Once you find a job that you’re passionate about, and you love, you never have to work a day in your life,’” he said. “For the last 31 years, I have not worked a day in my life.” Acknowledging that he interacts with nature daily and is passionate about fishing and the local coast, Huber concluded: I’ve been doing this my entire life and I feel blessed to get to do this as a living.” As Labor Day approaches, Huber noted “we’re slowing down now toward the end of the season. All our Arizona visitors are going home.” Nonetheless, the skipper said he and his crew remain “customer oriented. How well we do our job is how well we take care of our people. We’re a service industry. We want to share what we’re passionate about with the people we have fishing and show them a good time. When you’re catching fish and being a part of this … It’s almost a sacred place in a lot of our minds.” What advice does Huber have for people considering chartering a sportfishing boat? “If people have never checked it out – they should give it a try,” he said.

Tickets start at $80 per person and reservations can be made by calling the UCP office at 858571-5365 (ex: 112) or at ucpsd.org. Last year, the event raised close to $35,000 for United Cerebral Palsy and committee members are hoping to match or exceed that amount this year. Funds raised from this event will go to support the services that UCP provides to people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities including parent/sibling support groups, and training and counseling programs.

The firefighters also contribute countless volunteer hours to the agency as well. Since 1980, the firefighters’ efforts have resulted in more than $2.5 million for UCP. The Firefighter Community Responsibility Fund, established in 1973 by Local 145, has enabled San Diego firefighters to generate substantial monetary contributions for charitable organizations. Countless hours of volunteer time are spent annually with other charities, schools, and civic organizations as well. Other sponsors for the event include Berkshire Hathaway HomeState Cos., Misty Thompson, Melody Morgan, the San Diego Community Newspaper Group, David Mirisch Enterprises, Mobilityworks and DPC Productions. The United Cerebral Palsy Association of San Diego County was founded in 1958 and provides programs and services to children and adults with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Eighty-six percent of every dollar raised goes right back into the local community.
