San Diego International Airport has received two grants totaling nearly $14 million, part of a $318.1 million package of grants to 78 airports in 34 states, to provide infrastructure upgrades. “The grant funding is to continue the airport’s Quieter Home Program,” said San Diego Airport spokesperson Rebecca Bloomfield. “It will help
continue projects already under way within the areas the FAA has approved for sound attenuation.” The Quieter Home Program is the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Residential Sound Insulation Program. The FAA has determined that residences within the 65-plus decibel level contour map SEE NOISE, Page 17

COMMUNITY 4 Ocean Beach Woman’s Club floor campaign a smashing success THURSDAY · SEPTEMBER 14, 2017
THE PENINSULA BEACON
Thanks to the generous support of the community, and especially Steve Yeng, the Ocean Beach Woman’s Club met the Laying a New Foundation Floor Campaign goal. We have begun in earnest to ready the club for our Community Social Hour on Thursday, Oct. 5. Look for more details in the coming weeks and make sure to RSVP to the guest list. It is going to be a lovely affair with food, music, beer and wine, on our beautiful new floors and other spiffy improvements. In the meantime, we wanted to shed a bright light on our very own community champion, Steve Yeng. Ocean Beach resident, owner of The Noodle House, 1502 and The Holding Company, Yeng has a legacy of charity. His story and generosity echo back to before he was born, when, through multiple acts of kindness, he and his family escaped atrocity and war to come to the United States as refugees. We caught up with Yeng to thank him in person. He and his family embody the best of Ocean Beach and San Diego (and humanity in general for that matter) and we wanted to take the time to share his incredible journey. As it turns out, this is just Part 1. The “rest of the story” will be published in the next issue of the Peninsula Beacon.
Wars, bandits and apples The story begins in China. Yeng’s parents and grandparents were part of a massive migration of people who fled China to escape poverty and communist rule. They came to Cambodia, which is where his parents met. Cambodia was good to them. They owned rice plantations, there was enough to eat and the future looked promising. Then in 1975, the Khmer Rouge communist party and Marxist leader Pol Pot overthrew the government and took control of Cambodia. This brutal regime claimed the lives of up to two million people. Yeng’s family was rounded up and forced to work in communal farms.
Whole families died from execution, starvation, disease and overwork. Yeng’s parents told him they worked 23 hours a day, were given 10 grains of rice to eat and lived in constant fear of execution. Terribly, Yeng’s grandparents, aunts and uncles all died in the “killing fields,” but unbelievably fortuitous, his parents managed to hold on until freed. Yeng’s parents, Mr. T. and Siv Lien (owners of OB Donut) found a way to start over as butchers, using wild game as the meat source. Yeng’s father became famous for his sausages, which were valuable given the fact that there was no refrigeration. He and his wife shared food with others, already starting the philanthropy and charity they are still known for today – and clearly handed down to Yeng. The first two boys were born, with Yeng’s brother in 1982 and Steve in 1985. Then, when he was just 1 year old, he woke up and was unable to move from his neck down. At that time in Cambodia, illnesses were often thought to be caused by evil spirits and he was taken to spiritual healers. Medical clinics did not exist, but if they had, they would have learned that Yeng had polio, as there was not a polio vaccination in Cambodia. Without any medical hope in Cambodia, Yeng’s parents decided to give up everything to help their young child and hired a guide to leave Cambodia and go to Thailand. The guide was required not only to help them navigate, but also to avoid land mines and groups of bandits who preyed upon people traveling, as goods and services were paid for with gold. As a result, bandits knew anyone on the road was vulnerable. The butcher business had been successful, so Yeng’s family had a good deal of gold with them when they started the journey. But because Yeng’s father was well known, there were already bandits targeting his family. What happens next will be the subject of Part II.

Emma Stone as Billie Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs in a scene from the movie 'Battle of the Sexes.’
‘Battle of the Sexes’ movie nets Point Loma instructor BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
The made-for-TV match dubbed “Battle of the Sexes,” which featured self-styled “male chauvinist pig” Bobby Riggs versus tennis champion Billie Jean King, broadcast on Sept. 20, 1973 to an audience of an estimated 50 million viewers in the U.S. and 90 million worldwide. San Diegans can now relive that compelling pop culture moment by watching the upcoming movie “Battle of the Sexes,” which is scheduled to be released Sept. 22. And for one Point Loma tennis instructor, it’s a return to his past. The plot, loosely based on the Riggs-King match, stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as King and Riggs, respectively, with Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell and Sarah Silverman in supporting roles. Lornie Kuhle, tournament director of the USTA Girls' 16s and 18s Nationals at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma, was a close friend of
BATTLE OF THE SEXES What: The film depicts the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which became the most watched televised sports event of all time. Actors: Emma Stone as Billie Jean King, Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. Release date: Sept. 22. Info: www.foxsearchlight.com/battleofthesexes.
Bobby Riggs and worked as a consultant with film producers to bring the film to life. Kuhle spoke with the Peninsula Beacon about what the match, and the movie, have come to mean to him, to sports culture and international evolving gender relations moving forward. “I was the consultant for the movie,” said Kuhle, 69. “I was the person who worked with Steve Carell every day in getting him into the character of Bobby Riggs. I taught him how to play tennis like Bobby Riggs.” Robert Larimore Riggs, who died in 1995 from prostate cancer, was an American tennis champion who was the world No. 1 player for three years, first as an amateur in 1939, then as a professional in 1946 and 1947. As a 21-year-old amateur in 1939, Riggs won Wimbledon, the U.S. National Championships (now U.S. Open), and was runner-up at the French Championships. He was U.S. champion again in 1941, after a runner-up finish the year before. At age 55, Riggs competed in the first “Battle of the Sexes” challenge match in May 1973 against Margaret Court, the top-ranked female player at the time, and beat her (6–2, 6–1) in a televised match in Ramona. His easy victory landed Riggs on the cover of national magazines and reignited his fame.
Riggs used his new-found celebrity to taunt female tennis players, which prompted King to accept a lucrative financial offer to play Riggs in a nationally televised match in the Houston Astrodome on Sept. 20, 1973. Against King, the reigning Wimbledon champion and one of the best female players in the world, Riggs lost in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3, 6–3. Their primetime “Battle of the Sexes” match, which had a $100,000 winner-take-all prize, remains one of the most famous and most-watched tennis events of all time. Kuhle, Riggs' close friend and estate executor, pointed out Riggs, notably macho, had many redeeming qualities. “The uniqueness of his character was his promotional capacity, his showmanship, his thought process, mannerisms,” Kuhle said of the Los Angeles native. Noting King was 29 when she beat the 55-year-old Riggs, Kuhle believes that her victory helped spur the women’s rights movement. “It was not about the money,” said Kuhle of the iconic tennis match. “Billie Jean had won nine women's titles and she couldn't even get a credit card. It had to go in a man's name. She became one of the 100 most influential people in the 20th century because of this match.” Kuhle added movie producers are now “recapturing this historical match.” The hype of the match itself was aided greatly, the tennis pro said, by Riggs' promotional abilities, which he likened to “Barnum and Bailey.” The Barnes Center is part of Youth Tennis San Diego, a nonprofit whose purpose is to promote the educational, physical and social development of all youth through organized tennis and educational activities.

Next Space plans redevelopment of old shopping center site on Voltaire Street BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
New owners of the dilapidated small shopping center on Voltaire Street at Las Lomas want to replace the old hodge podge of leftovers there, which in recent years featured Sunshine Liquor as the most prominent tenant. But Sunshine Liquor has moved on, after losing its lease, to a new home down Voltaire Street in a different strip mall near a consignment shop and a music center. There used to be a flower shop on the corner of the old Sunshine Liquor site, Petals by Katie. But Katie's has left as well. What will replace them? As the Voltaire Corridor spruces up with improvements on the Nimitz overpass bridge and plans for decorative street lighting, the old shopping center was ripe for being the next space developed. In fact, that’s the name of the company taking over, Next Space Development, which is based at 2820 Shelter Island Drive. This new mixed-use creation is being referred to as “Nimitz Crossing.” “The center was old, was functionally obsolete, and had just a rundown dump of a building,” said
‘The center was old ... a rundown dump ...’ RUDY MEDINA NEXT SPACE DEVELOPMENT
Rudy Medina, a member of the Next Space Development team. “It was mostly the liquor store and some mixed-use components. There were some (old) offices in there that were empty for users (tenants).” Next Space has other projects in the Peninsula in the works, including their latest blockbuster, Bellamar Point Loma, at 3025 Byron St. and 1180 Rosecrans St. A collection of 16 two-bedroom master flats, Bellamar at 1180 Rosecrans St. is replacing Blockbuster Video, Ipanema Watch and Jewelry and Gus's Subs. Designed by Martinez Cutri Architects, many of Bellamar's units exceed 2,000 square feet in size and are being priced in the low $1.1 million-range. It's a price the project's website claims “will be significantly lower than similar-sized units in the immediate area.” Though it's still early-on in the center's redevelopment, Medina said a plan is in place for the makeover of
the old Sunshine site, which Next Door acquired in 2016. Medina said pre-approved plans were already in place, when Next Space purchased the property two years ago, to redevelop it as mixed use. “[The plan] has been in process for years,” said Medina about the old 26,000-square-foot building that previously housed Sunshine Liquor. Medina said Next Space is in plancheck with the city on its proposed project, which includes 24 apartment units and approximately 9,000 square feet of retail space. “We're not going to do liquor, just community uses — whatever the market will bear,” Medina said about redeveloping the site. “I'm sure there will be some food uses, the normal stuff. There could be coffee. There might be some low-impact restaurant like Subway.” It's still early-on in the planning process, said Medina of the status of the old Sunshine Liquor site. “We don't have any tenants yet,” he said adding, “We're not going to start construction until the end of this year. So we're looking at sometime in 2019 for (tenant) turnover. We bought it (Sunshine site) with a plan in place. That part has already been done.”

If you're into cereal or custom pizza, Liberty Public Market has two new eateries joining its varied mix to please your palates. One is Doughballs, a new take on all things pizza. The other is Crackheads, a brand new concept: An allday breakfast bar. Doughballs/Crackheads owner/originator James Markham talked about the origin of both restaurant concepts. “One of the things I remember growing up back East is my mom buying pizza dough from the Italian gourmet and frying into into little pancake-like patties,” said Markham about Doughball's makings. “Crackheads … I just thought it was a funny name,” adding, “the name's really been wildly popular with our sign inside drawing attention from people taking pictures with it.” Doughballs is now cooking up wood-fired pizza in the Liberty Public Market space that services the food hall’s indoor dining area. The quickservice eatery is a fresh offering from a veteran of the fast-casual pizza world, JM Concepts’ Markham, who helped create the MOD Pizza, Pieology and Project Pie brands, and who

Markham is also launching Crackheads in Liberty Public Market. The all-day breakfast bar features breakfast sandwiches, Pop Tarts that can be topped with sweet ingredients or used as a base for ice cream sandwiches, and build-your-own cereal bowls. Of Crackheads and its origin, Markham said, “There seems to be a big void in breakfast, with nothing in-between the fast-food restaurants of the world, and the more expensive, sit-down breakfast places that take 20 to 40 minutes to be served. There was a void in the casual side of breakfast.” Enter Crackheads, where, Markham noted, “Everything sits in a hot water bath and is ready to serve to you in 15 seconds.” Markham added Crackheads cereal “bar” is truly unique. “We have 10 different cereals in a glass counter, and you tell us which ones of the 10 — or all of them — that you want, with everything in ingredients from Snicker's bars to marshmallows to gummy bears. It's build your own.” Additionally, Markham is developing Jarheads, an eatery offering sweet and savory dishes cooked sous vide in recyclable mason jars, which will have a dedicated storefront in North County, offering sweet and savory dishes cooked sous vide in recyclable mason jars. The jars, filled with everything from truffle-bacon mac and cheese to fluffy Japanese-style pancakes, will also be available at Liberty Public Market.

SPORTS 7 Pointers come back and hold off Hornets at goal line THURSDAY · SEPTEMBER 14, 2017
THE PENINSULA BEACON
BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON
Fans at last Friday night's football game between Point Loma and Lincoln High Schools were treated to one of the best and most dramatic prep games in recent memory. The Pointers emerged from the battle royale with a 36-34 victory, but only after the Hornets were given two plays to win the game by scoring from the Dogs' one-yard line – with 4 seconds, and then 1 second, left on the stadium scoreboard. Both times they were stopped by a Pointer defense that, along with the offense, seemed to find new life in the second half after falling behind by as much as 22-7 earlier. With 3:31 left to play and the Hornets clinging to a 34-29 lead, Pointer Jake Silva pounced on a fumble to give the Pointers a chance for one more drive. Pounding runs by Josh Ball (41 carries) and others brought the Dogs inside the Hornets' 10. With 34 seconds left in the game, the Pointers scored the go-ahead touchdown when quarterback Kyle Grady found fullback Mathew Fa'alele open near the goal line and lofted an eight-yard scoring pass to the 240-pound senior for only the second Pointer lead of the game at 36-34. The Pointers chose to go deep with the ensuing kickoff, and Hornet Da'Jon Thomas took the ball and weaved in and out of Pointers’ coverage, sending the hearts of fans of both sides into shock. But a game-saving tackle by Pointer Johkyreian Shealey gave the Hornets the ball just 15 yards from a victory with 20 seconds
left to set up the wild finish. The next play saw the Hornets sweep left for 11 yards to the Pointer four-yard line with 8 seconds left. The Hornets ran the first of their two "last plays" from an I-formation with 4 seconds showing. Pointer coach Dave Aros later said there is "no way" the Hornets could have snapped the ball, made the exchange to the running back, who then had to run to the line of scrimmage and attempt to fight through a tangle of bodies and then be stopped and tackled, all in less than 4 seconds. Yet the officiating crew determined there was still 1 second left and cleared the field for a second "last play." The Pointers stuffed this final, final play to seal the victory and send emotions on both sides swirling in opposite directions. "I'm really proud of the way we came together at the end," said senior lineman Davey Folsom, a 6-foot 4-inches tall, 315-pounder who plays both ways for the Pointers. "The coaches talked to us at halftime and told us we were a better team. We changed some coverages, put in some new guys and that shut them down. Lincoln is legit, they're a good team." Folsom had three tackles, an assist, a sack and a fumble recovery and once again left several defenders flat on their backs after pancake blocks. For the Pointers, the game marked their first victory under their popular new stadium lights and improved their record to 1-2. The Hornets (2-1) were undefeated entering the game.
an assist, and his two pass interceptions stopped Hornet drives. "We knew we were in for a real dogfight," head coach Mike Hastings said later. "Anytime we got down we just came back and answered. At halftime I could feel the energy was there. I had the feeling we had turned a corner and we were going to go out and win the game in the second half."

One of San Diego’s musical treasures, pianist and singer-songwriter Marie Haddad, performs at Humphrey’s Backstage Live on Sept. 28. She will be celebrating the release of her new album, “Stories From Atlantis,” a wonderful showcase of her piano-based songs. Blessed with a beautiful, pure-sounding voice, her material will resonate with fans of Kate Bush or late-period Joe Jackson, songs that paint pictures, unified by a wonderful sense of melody. Now known for her virtuoso piano playing, Haddad doesn’t recall any specific influence on her instrument of choice. “I don't know if there was one person who inspired me to play the piano,” she recalled. “I just always have been drawn to play one. When I was a kid, any time there was music in a commercial or on a TV show, I'd 'play along,' also known as banging on the keys of my little toy piano. When I turned 5, my parents brought in a 'real' upright piano for me to learn on and I started taking lessons.” Haddad most often performs solo, but for this event she will be joined by drummer Matt Lynott, bassist Patrick McClory, and singer Heather Nation will be adding her beautiful voice to

the live backing vocals. Special guests will include Daniel Crawford (Blackout Party), cellist Erdis Maxhelaku and Kelly Duley (Kite Flying Society). For her second album, she cites production as one of the biggest differences this time out. Co-produced by Ben Moore, the album, has a warm, lush sound with an almost classical feel in parts, offset by quirky rhythms and Haddad’s inspired arrangements. “I also wanted to add a lot of vocal layers to these songs, more so than in any of my previous recordings. I think the songwriting topics are more diverse as well. Although there are personal songs on this album many of the songs are observations of others. ‘Waiting on the Sun’ is about the inventor Nikola Tesla. ‘Pictures in the Clouds’ is about a child,” she said. Meanwhile, “Spinning Yarn” includes a clip of Haddad’s grandmother singing in her native language, Serbian, and "Jdita" is about the village in Lebanon where her father grew up. The album also includes a cover of
Johnny Cash’s classic “Ring of Fire.” “I've had a lot of positive feedback about my rendition of 'Ring of Fire' over the years, I thought it was time to finally get it properly recorded,” she said. Though the odds are long in today’s music biz, Haddad is determined. “I'm not sure I've ever thought about not continuing to try to get my music out there,” she said. “I know I'll always be making music. How I share it might change as the years go by, but the drive to create isn't something I can explain or stop. I'm just extremely happy other people have liked what they've heard. It makes me excited to share and to continue on with public performance.” Future plans include more music videos. “I have visual ideas for every song I write and I really enjoy the experience of making a video from start to finish,” she explained. “We've already finished one for ‘Jdita’ made by the incredible people over at KIND Films. ‘Waiting on the Sun’ and ‘Pictures in the Clouds’ are probably the next songs from the album on the list.” Other projects in the works include two EPs and a children’s book. United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Do On Sept. 17, a memorial will be you ever wonder how the Kumeyaay might have resisted Spanish colonization besides sacking Mission San Diego in 1775? Is there any chance that they used art forms to show their disdain for the Spaniards right beneath (and above) the eyes of the colonists? In this highly informative and engaging talk, historian and anthropologist Carrico will delve into the “dark art” that the Kumeyaay used to continue their ancient artistic practices and their use of symbology. The Kumeyaay served as laborers at both the mission and presidio and as part of that work effort they formed and fired the adobe roof tiles (tejas) and floor tiles (baldosas) at both outposts. Probably unknown to their supervisors and to Spanish authorities, some Kumeyaay inscribed the wet adobe with images and symbols. Many of the images are comparable to designs in local rock art and on ceramic pots and vessels that predate the arrival of the Spaniards. They include circles, concentric designs, cross-hatching, and what may be human figures. In addition, some of the designs depict things and places on Presidio Hill. Through a series of slides and images, Carrico will guide you back to the 1770-1820 period when the tiles were formed and decorated and then link the art work to a far more ancient period. Carrico will strongly suggest that the images have deeprooted meaning and form what one scholar has called “abusive art;” art that is meant to reflect cultural persistence and a rejection of some of the Spanish dictates.

Keep walking along Newport Avenue by the colorful stalls selling crafts, clothes, and cuisines, eventually one ends up at the little grass area next to the beach, which is filled with creative people playing music, balancing on bodies and slacklines, all the while going with the flow. “There are a lot of people doing different things and it is also a good place to meet other people doing slacklining,” said Eric Hake, who comes to Ocean Beach from Mission Valley on Wednesdays to slackline. Hake moved to San Diego about a year ago and thinks it is a perfect city for slacklining, which he does five days a week in OB and Bonita Cove. “It is just a lot of fun. You can do it almost everywhere. You just need two places to make hangers,” Hake said. The grassy area off Abbott Street is also filled with young women dancing around with hula hoops and plenty of acro yoga enthusiasts.
‘I come here because there are so many beautiful people and that helps me relax.’ CASLEY SHANNON SAN DIEGO STATE STUDENT
“I come here because there are so many beautiful people and that helps me relax in the middle of the week,” said Casley Shannon, who is a student at San Diego State University. Shannon likes to hula-hoop and she comes to the Ocean Beach Farmers Market every Wednesday with her friends. “I like the energy and all the creativity that is happening. There is a very loving, accepting, and creative vibe here,” Shannon said. As the sun gets closer to the horizon, the drums beat louder, and the crowd grows larger around the grassy area as visitors watch the young people expressing themselves. “I think it is fantastic to watch people being creative with athletics and yoga. I am an athlete myself and the things they are doing are really hard to do,” said Sandy Valone, who lives in Point Loma. Valone brought her sister, who was visiting from Hawaii, so she could see the new things happening around the OB Farmers Market. “I think it is a really nice and helpful thing,” said Valone.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 100 As you know, each year the Pacific Beach Town Council holds a Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night (P. A. E. S. A. N.) honoring SDPD Northern Division, Station 21 of San Diego Fire & Rescue, the San Diego Lifeguards, and the Mission Bay Park Rangers. The 2017 event will be held September 27 from 4:30 to 6:30 P. M. and will take place at the Rotary Club Pavilion “North Crown Point Shores” off Crown Point Drive. This year the major beneficiary will be the San Diego Lifeguards. The town councils of Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and La Jolla accepted the challenge to join us and together we honored the 100 full-time and 205 seasonal guards at a beginning of the season breakfast hosted by the Mission Bay Yacht Club. We requested the lifeguards’ wish lists and are asking for your participation on the purchase of these items, and your financial support for the September 27 BBQ. 1. Practice Rescue boards without Rescue on them for use and practice of newer guards. They have requested 5 and they cost $425 each. Total needed is $3400. 2. The lifeguard stations need help too. They have requested toaster ovens, and solar radios. Estimated cost is $1000. 3. At the breakfast, each lifeguard received a back-pack filled with summer needs – sun screen, towels, etc. The Toyota Dealers Association provided back-packs for the seasonal guards, the cost for the fulltime guards came to $1,500. The cost of the BBQ September 27 is $2,000. So our total fundraising goal is $7,900. Can you help us reach this goal? was hailed by DecoBike boardwalk station opponents, who had become weary of tangling with DecoBike, trying to get them off the boardwalk and not competing with local bikerental small businesses. Especially relieved by this most recent turn of events are beach small business owners catering to recreational bicyclists, like Matt Gardner, longtime owner of Cheap Rentals, and Mission Beach Rentals at Belmont Park in Mission Beach, who were crying foul claiming their businesses suffered from unfair competition from DecoBike. “I've lost about $120,000 over two years,” Gardner told the Peninsula Beacon previously, adding,“I'm giving the city and DecoBike every chance to make it right.” Making it right, according to Gardner, would mean “establishing a true commuter-friendly ride sharing network — or they recoup the money that's been taken away from me.” Garner claimed the lion's share of DecoBike rentals, as much 77 percent, is for recreational tourists, and not as the final leg of a commuter trip utilizing mass transit.
