City approves Midway Community Plan update BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
The City Council on Sept. 17 unanimously approved a Midway Community Plan update, which will guide development during the next 20 years. The approved plan more than doubles the capacity for future housing, while providing 30 acres of new parkland and multi-modal pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Midway presently is largely dominated by commercial, industrial and warehouse space. With Council approval of its updated community plan, one major redevelopment puzzle piece remains: What’s to become of the Valley View Casino Center (3500 Sports Arena Blvd.) built in 1966? Nearly 100 acres of City-owned Midway property leased to various businesses, including Valley View Casino Center, will expire in 2020. Cathy Kenton, Midway-Pacific Highway Community Planning Group chair, said the community plan update, 11 years in the making, came a long way from start to finish. “The earlier version of the update did not address our traffic issues,” she said. “We have a much better document now going forward and I’m really excited.” District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf praised the plan update.

“The Midway planning area is home to major attractions like the Sports Arena and Liberty Station, however, the community has many blighted areas,” Zapf said. “With this new plan, we can say goodbye to the Red-Light District of yesteryear and welcome in a new era with better transportation, improved housing options, park and recreation facilities and a fantastic balance of mixed-use projects.” Zapf said the new Midway Community Plan calls for millions of dollars of critical traffic improvements at 20 intersections and 17 roadway segments throughout the community. The traffic improvements are to be implemented over time and will include a multimodal approach to help the City meet its climate-action goals. Additionally, the community plan will jumpstart the coordination between the City and other regional transportation agencies to address the I-5 and I-8 interchanges. Mayor Kevin Faulconer was on board with the Midway Community

Plan update. “This will set the stage for the type of development we want to see in the Midway area, like more housing and jobs for residents and a revitalized entertainment district that all San Diegans can enjoy,” Faulconer said. “We’re doubling down on our strategy of focusing new development around transit and job centers as we rebuild our city for the future.” The Midway-Pacific Highway Community Plan update calls for: n A bay-to-bay multi-use path that will support bicycle and pedestrian travel between Mission Bay and San Diego Bay. n Thirty acres of new parkland, including two linear parks connected by enhanced streetscapes that complement the multi-use path. n A new recreation center to serve future residents. n A vibrant entertainment area that incorporates a mix of entertainment, office, retail, housing and park space to be potentially developed with the existing Valley View Casino Center, with a new arena, or no arena. Midway currently has a population of about 5,600 covering about 1,324 acres buffeted by the San Diego River, Interstate 5, two trolley stations and the San Diego International Airport.
map waiver request, without us being able to see the plans first. The cart is before the horse.” Jim Hare concurred. “Unless the process for reviewing map waivers is changed, these are the projects we’re going to get, and this is what they look like,” he said. After the PCBP meeting, chair Robert Goldyn, commented: “The major issue we have is that these projects only come before us to get the map waiver, and not during design and construction, so we do not have a chance to really review the project and offer comment. It’s the process we have issue with.”

board members expressed frustration with the public-review process on them. “We don’t always have to agree with these map waiver requests,” said Margaret Virissimo, objecting to the larger project’s scale. “Seventy percent of these projects are grandfathered in. We have to stick together and say no, we don’t support these. Enough is enough.” Colleague Jerry Lohla agreed. “Developers are playing this game to keep densifying our community,” he said. “They get the

OB BREWERY PALE ALE WINS GOLD MEDAL AT BEER FESTIVAL Ocean Beach Brewery captured a gold medal recently at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver with B.Right On Pale Ale (gold medal), an American-style pale ale. “It’s the first beer I’d ever brewed at OB Brewery,” brewmaster John Millea said. “It’s a pale ale that I’m pretty proud of and we were lucky enough to score the gold medal. I was pretty stoked.” It was one of the most-entered categories in the competition with 170 entrants. What makes the win more impressive is that the brewery was only opened in July 2016. OB Brewery was also recognized as the small brewpub of the year. Last year, OB Brewery brought home silver for its Hidden Gem, a German-style wheat beer.

Those believing so should enter Ocean Beach MainStreet Association’s “Pets of OB” photo contest honoring the pet-friendly beach community and celebrating Dog Beach being named San Diego’s “Best Dog Park.” For a $10 per-pet entry fee, banner-worthy, high-resolution digital photos with the main focus being Ocean Beach’s dogs (or other animals) can be submitted at oceanbeachsandiego.com. OBMA reserves the right to colorize or alter photos, and all entrants must agree to allow the business improvement district to use them. “Our community banners go up in January and hang throughout
the year at the entryways to Ocean Beach on Newport and Sunset Cliffs,” said Nicole Ueno, OBMA programs director. “We have room for up to 60 photos on the front and back of our 30 community banners.” Ueno said each double-sided community banner will feature one dog or other pet on each side. “We’re looking for clean images of any pet that lives in Ocean Beach in the 92107 ZIP code,” said Ueno, noting Thursday, Nov. 1 is the deadline to submit photos. “What we’re going to do is stylize the photos we get, do an artist’s rendering, pet portraiture, of the animal,” said Ueno. “We’re looking forward to seeing lots of cute pet photos come in from our pet-friendly community.”

Top notch international cuisine and art at Fairouz Cafe & Gallery BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
None of it was anticipated, said international attorney, successful restaurateur and published poetauthor Ibrahim AlNashashibi. “I never thought I would be having a restaurant,” said the affable, soulful AlNashashibi, who’s owned Fairouz Cafe & Gallery at 3166 Midway Drive, Suite 102, since 1984. “Everything I planned for — didn’t work. And all the good things that happened to me: I never planned.” Surrounded by his evocative, stylized paintings, the Jerusalemborn AlNashashibi reminisced about life’s unsuspected twists and turns that culminated in creation of his Mediterranean buffet-style restaurant. The restaurateur said the Midway strip mall he’s been in for 36 years is unrecognizable now. “We were the second tenant in after Godfather’s Pizza,” he said. “Now we’re the only ones left.” Named for a famous Lebanese singer AlNashishibi admires, Fairouz means breathtaking turquoise stone in Arabic. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers 40-plus international-cuisine options including Greek, Lebanese, Spanish, French and Italian fare. “We have falafel, tabouli, hummus, baba ghanoush, lamb, beef and chicken gyros and stuffed grape leaves,” said the restaurateur. “We
also have lots of vegetarian items. We have very good reviews on Yelp.” Born in the old city of Jerusalem in 1950, AlNashashibi’s family’s roots date back centuries and include poets, writers and politicians — even one religious leader, Ibrahim’s great-grandfather prince Nasser Aldeen AlNashashibi. Though steeped in the Middle East, AlNashashibi always wanted to be an American. He particularly admired U.S. President Abraham Lincoln growing up. “I loved him,” he said, noting he shares Lincoln’s first name in Arabic. Asked why he was so impressed by Lincoln, AlNashashibi replied, “For his family values, freeing the slaves, equality, justice and freedom — those things weren’t available for me then.” Early on, AlNashashibi studied medicine overseas, but found it wasn’t for him. He earned his law degree in 1972 in Beirut, then practiced law in the Gulf until 1986, before marrying and coming to San Diego. “I fell in love with San Diego,” said AlNashashibi describing it as “a very spiritual city that feels like Jerusalem.” He added, “The beauty of being an American is that we all bring good things from our past.” AlNashashibi started Fairouz with his brother-in-law, but the business struggled until finding its niche.
FAIROUZ CAFE & GALLERY Where: 3166 Midway Drive, Suite 102. Hours: Mondays through Thursdays 11a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sundays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Info: 619-225-0308.
The restaurant serves falafel (above), tabouli, hummus, baba ghanoush, lamb, beef and chicken gyros and stuffed grape leaves.
“We wanted to serve homecooked, Mediterranean recipes that are good for you,” AlNashashibi said. “So I brought my mom’s recipes.” AlNashashibi knew he could paint since he was 5 years old, but didn’t try it until he was depressed following a divorce. He turned to painting for therapy after a dream. “In my dream I looked through a window at a field of flowers with colors I’d never seen,” he said. “I recognized that I’d always seen life in black and white, never in color.”
The next day, AlNashashibi started painting. “Six months later, I had my first exhibit here, and that night I sold $17,500 worth of art,” he said, adding, “I paint to discover the real values of life.” AlNashashibi shows his own work, as well as other local artists, in his restaurant/art gallery. AlNashashibi had a similar experience with writing. After his second wife died of cancer, he penned a poetry book, “Written With Colors Drawn With Words,” memorializing her. That was therapeutic for him too.
During the last nine years, he’s written another poetry book and a novel titled “Love Is All You Need,” loosely based on his life experiences. “I got inspired with the novel when my wife was still in a coma,” AlNashashibi said. “I thought, ‘What positive could come from this disaster?’ The next day, the idea for the book came to me. I took her hand and said, ‘Thank you. You just gave birth to my first novel.’” These days, AlNashashibi said his writing and poetry, to some extent, are taking him away from his painting. Fairouz, for AlNashashibi, is much more than a restaurant. And his patrons are more than just customers. “I have tons of grandchildren, brothers and sisters — this is how it feels,” he said. Summarizing the long and meandering path that’s led him to San Diego and Fairouz, AlNashashibi concluded, “It is a beautiful life, what can I tell you?”

New Z&F Chinese Food offers tasty dishes
Susan Lee “Gregg” Sorben January 17, 1944 - June 17, 2018
BY JUDI CURRY | THE BEACON
After having a house full of company for the past 11 days, and cooking for everyone, I saw a Grubhub ad on my email and thought it might be nice to have someone else do the cooking for me. When I saw the listing for the new Z&F Chinese Food restaurant on Shelter Island, I knew that karma had taken over and that’s what we would do for dinner. I looked at the menu and decided that I would order items that I could compare with the several other Chinese restaurants in the area. The first thing I ordered was cream cheese wontons. Then I was going to order egg rolls, but found that several of their plates included egg rolls, so I took that off my order menu and made sure I ordered something with egg rolls part of the plate. I ordered the shrimp with mixed veggies with rice and an egg roll for $9.45 from their “full day special” menu, and also ordered a vegetable chop suey special that also came with rice and an egg roll for $8.45. When I placed the order, I was asked if I wanted white rice or fried rice for $1 more, so I ordered one of each. I also asked for hot mustard to go with the cream cheese wontons. The vegetables were delicious. They were not overcooked. They were tasty and seasoned well. I was disappointed that there were only four shrimp, but

Susie Gregg Sorben passed away on June 17, 2018 at Lake Tahoe. Susie is missed beyond imagination. Her passing was attributed to heart failure and internal complications. Susie was born in Milwaukee, WI. She, her three brothers, one sister, their dad Jack Gregg and Mom Ruth, moved to the Ocean Beach area of San Diego in the summer of 1959. Susie and her first husband, Manning Calhoun, had two boys, Michael and Billy. Her boys were the love of her life. She raised them to be moral, caring, and with big hearts, despite growing up in '60s and '70s OB. Susie worked for the Brigantine Restaurant Corporation for may years. She was a manager at the Brig and Miguel’s Cocina in Point Loma. During her days at the Brigantine Susie fell in love with long time friend, Bob Sorben, a Point Loma/OB local and artist (creator of the OB Seagull). They were married in December 30, 2000. Susie and Bob retired in 2016 to Minden, NV, near Lake Tahoe. Close to her second son Bill, his wife Jill and their granddaughter Madisyn (Madi). Susie is survived by her husband Bob Sorben, son Michael Calhoun, son William Calhoun (Jill), and granddaughter, Madisyn Sue Calhoun, brothers Michael Gregg(Linda), Thomas Gregg (Diane), sister Jeanne Kearny (Kurt), many nieces and nephews and predeceased by her brother Tim Gregg.

those four medium-size ones were succulent. Miki even commented on how good they tasted. Both of the sides of rice were cooked and seasoned well. I thought that it was interesting that Miki, my Japanese student, liked the fried rice better than the steamed rice, because we frequently have steamed rice with our meals and that is what she is used to in Japan. The egg roll shells were very hard to bite into, but the filling was good, and the cream cheese wontons were tasty also. I did not get the hot mustard that I requested when I placed

Her family and close friends, who miss her deeply, find it hard to believe shes gone. We all know Susie was a very special person. She loved life and people, and had a sense of humor and easy style, that could quickly turn strangers into friend. She left us with such great, fond and loving memories of the good times we shared with her. Susie will forever live in our hearts and minds, to remember her kindness and her smiling face. Ask The Trust & Estate Attorneys Question: My dog is a very important part of my family. How can I be sure that he will be taken care of if something were to happen to me? Under California Probate Code § 15212, animals can be provided for in your Trust. I often create “Pet Virginia Weber Laskowitz Trusts” for clients within their living Trust to (retired) & Shannon T. O’Neill ensure that their beloved pets are cared for after their death. In the Pet Trust, we designate a person to care for your pet and then require the trustee to make a cash distribution to that person to cover the pet's expenses. You are, in essence, providing a guardian for your pet. Be sure to select your pet's guardian carefully and discuss the responsibility with them. If you have minor children, it may be appropriate for you to appoint the same guardian for the pet and your children, so they will not be separated. If you need help providing for your pet, please call our office to set up a time to come see us, and bring your furry friend too! We are a dog friendly office.

Delightful and delicious lunch at new Ketch Grill & Taps BY JUDI CURRY | THE BEACON
Against my better judgment, I decided to do a review of the new Ketch Grill & Taps on Shelter Island Drive. For those of you that are not sure where it is located, it is where Red Sails used to be. Their “soft opening” was only a few days ago, and I try to wait at least three months before doing a review of a new restaurant. But five different people called me and asked if I was going to do it soon so I decided that if it was no good, or lacking something, I would not write it up and try again. Well, I will “try again,” but not because it was lacking anything. In fact, it was very good. From the moment that Jo, Sandy and I walked in and were greeted by two delightful hostesses, to the time we left – again wishing us a wonderful day by the same hostesses – it was a wonderful experience.
We had our choice of eating inside or outside, and we chose an outside table. It was not particularly warm – and it was not particularly cold – and our table in the sunlight was very comfortable. (I wondered if during the really hot weather umbrellas would be available, but it was not necessary today.) Kari, our server, was friendly and took our drink order almost before we sat down. We ordered either ice tea or lemonade, but the Ketch brews their own beer and the draft menu lists 18 brews plus five bottle/cans, which was intriguing. Their wine menu, either by the glass or bottle, listed 15 items. Even their cocktail menu, listing eight specialties, was interesting, and during happy hour from 3 to 5 p.m. there is $2 off drafts, $1 off glasses of wine, and $2 off their cocktails. The menu itself is divided into four areas – “cold stuff,” “hot bar,” “land and sea,” and “Ketchy sides.”
Sandy ordered Lala’s kale and farro salad, which was made with baby kale, faro, butternut squash, goat cheese, cucumber, Marcona almonds, garden raisins and served with a honey-truffle vinaigrette. The cost was $8. Jo ordered the Ketch tuna melt. It had lightly smoked tuna, jack cheese and fresh tomatoes and was served on lightly griddled sourdough. She had her choice of the “daily green” or “hand-cut” fries. She chose the fries. The price was $14. I ordered the IPA battered local fish and chips, because I usually compare this to other fish-and-chip restaurants. It was served with malt aioli sauce and served over housecut fries. The cost was $15. We raved about our food. The salad was crisp; the baby kale was flavorable; the dressing was not too wet and complemented the ingredients well. For someone that doesn’t really
care for smoked tuna, Jo said this tuna was excellent. The jack cheese and tomatoes were in the right proportion and she remarked that the griddled sourdough was soft enough that it was easy to eat. She also said that there were capers in the tuna and a nice addition to the flavor. She would order it again. Like mine, the “hand-cut” fries were hot and tasty. The fish that I ordered was cooked perfectly. Not breaded too much; hot when served, and the three pieces were so much that I took half of it home. We had non-ending drinks. As soon as a glass was empty, it was refilled. I never realized how hard it is to drink lemonade without a straw, but the restaurant is following the new law of no straws unless asked for. It should be noted that our meals were served on metal trays. The bill was placed on a metal tray and a fishing weight was used to keep the

bill from blowing away. That was unique, but I have to say that when the tray was placed on the table and the sun rays hit it it blinded me and I had to have Sandy move it out of the sun. Although there are no gluten-free items on the menu at this time, I was told that they can make some items without gluten if you tell the server that is what you want. There are vegetarian items also available. We spent a few minutes talking to Brittany, the manager, and she, like the other staff, was delightful. We told her we’d be back, and soon. So even though they have only been open a very short time, they seem to have it all together. A fun lunch was had by all of us.

OBMA members invited to celebrate organization’s 40 years at art show An organization that began with brooms and dustpans in 1978 has become a force in Ocean Beach, putting on some of San Diego’s largest and most-beloved events. The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association is celebrating 40 years of community involvement from residents and leaders in the business community, and is inviting all members to a
month of celebration and a special Sundowner event to cap it off. On Oct. 5, the Culture Brewing Tasting Room (4845 Newport Ave.) will feature the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association as the “Artist of the Month,” featuring OB memorabilia and a timeline of OBMA’s growth and community involvement since 1978.
That event, honoring the art itself, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. and the art will hang throughout October. The event will feature a large Ocean Beach logo photo mosaic made of hundreds of smaller photos of our beautiful neighborhood, past OBMA T-shirts, and a video presentation highlighting the milestones of the organization.
On Oct. 25, OBMA members are invited down to Culture Brewing for a special edition of the monthly Sundowner mixer. Members will receive limited-edition membership pins and can mingle with other OBMA members. Events like the OB Street Fair, OB Oktoberfest and the much-loved weekly OB Farmers Market are all staples of what Ocean Beach MainStreet Association brings to the community every year, but it didn’t start so big. In 1978, a group of volunteers saw sand and rubbish piling
up in the business district and decided to do something about it. Out came the brooms to sweep the sidewalk, and OBMA was born. In 1978, the group boasted just 25 members, only three of which (The Black, Pacific Shores and Ocean Beach Hardware) are still in business. Today, a whopping 523 members in the 92107, 92106 and 92110 ZIP codes are proud to be members of the association. View the OBMA Timeline at oceanbeachsandiego.com/mainstreet-association/timeline.
Inaugural SD Music Hall of Fame ceremony at OB Playhouse on Oct. 5 BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON
It’s no secret that San Diego has had a thriving music community since the 1940s, with dozens of chart contenders emerging, across genres, in that time. Many successful careers have been launched from San Diego: country superstar Barbara Mandrell, heavy metal pioneers Iron Butterfly, pop punk trio Blink 182, and singer-songwriter Jewel all got their start here. With so much great music, it is perhaps surprising that to date there has been no local Hall of Fame, to celebrate it. On Oct. 5 that situation will be rectified, when the inaugural San Diego Music Hall of Fame ceremony takes place at the OB Playhouse. Hosted by event organizer Jefferson Jay, the first year’s honorees will be songwriter Jack Tempchin, best known for his work with The Eagles, pop hitmaker Jason Mraz, armless guitarist Mark Goffeney, jazz pianist Sue Palmer, long-time booker and musician John Ciccolella, and the late Lou Curtiss, music historian, radio host and original owner of Folk Arts Records. Palmer, Goffney and The Pizarro Brothers will be among the night’s performers, while Billy Galewood will be there on behalf of Mraz. A portion of the night’s proceeds will be donated to the Pizarro family to help with expenses following the

tragic passing of Aileen and Aryana Pizarro in an accident earlier this year. “We aim to honor anybody who has given in a meaningful and selfless manner to music-making in San Diego,” Jay said. “We will not exclusively honor those who have sold millions of units or achieved universal acclaim. We will also honor bookers and promoters, like Johnny Ciccolella, and folks like Lou Curtiss, who booked events, wrote music articles and ran a record store. These fellows played music, but their contributions off the stage are a large reason they are inductees.” With San Diego’s music scene thriving, Jay felt the time was right for such an event. Pointers cage Eagles with strong finish touchdown in the first minute of the final frame. On the next Pointer drive, they stalled at the Eagles' 13-yard line. From there, Andy Medina made good on a 30-yard field goal for the final 45-13 margin. Added to his six PAT's, Medina scored nine of his team's points. The Pointers were credited with 603 total yards including 293 passing and 310 rushing. "Every phase contributed tonight," Hastings said. "Special teams giving us great field position, the defense was taking care of business and I thought our offense was just electric."

One blank box on the Pointer football team's checklist has been "Put an opponent away with a strong finish." The team did just that Sept. 14, scoring 24 unanswered second half points to spoil Olympian High School's homecoming with a convincing 45-13 win, dropping the Eagles to 1-4. "That was really something to dominate in the second half," said head coach Mike Hastings. "We really turned the corner in how we play football and finish an opponent off. We learned the hard way at El Camino and Otay Ranch and tonight we figured it out." The Pointers (3-2) started strong with scores on their first two possessions by Christian Hall. His first score came on a short run after a 24-yard pickup by Kaden Gill, and his second came on a swing pass from QB Jason Peres that Hall turned into a 75-yard touchdown and 140 first quarter lead. Gill, a mainstay of the Pointers' offense and defense, was injured in the first quarter and did not return. In the second quarter, Olympian's offense showed some life, driving to the Pointer five-yard line before losing the ball on a fumble recovered by Myles Bryant. On the second play following the turnover, Pointer JL Skinner snared a pass from Peres 20 yards downfield and used speed and direction changes to break free on a 90-yard scoring play for a 21-0 lead with 6:42 left before the halftime show. But, as has happened in previous games, the Pointers allowed the Eagles back in the game with two

The Pointers did move the ball to the Eagles one-yard line but could not stop the clock as the first half came to an end. CATCHING UP WITH
Point Loma grad Katie McEachern BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON
One of the greatest female athletes to attend Point Loma High School has entered another phase of her life that allows her to continue her love of softball. Katie McEachern, 24, has been hired as an assistant coach at NCAA Div. I Fordham University in the Bronx borough of New York City. New head coach Melissa Inouye brought McEachern and Matt Klampert aboard to complete her inaugural staff to compete in the Atlantic 10 conference in 2019. "Coach McEachern had a very successful playing career at Dartmouth College and was fortunate to experience playing professional softball in Europe and with the Canadian National Team," Inouye said. "She definitely knows what it takes to be successful on and off the field." After graduation from PLHS in 2012, McEachern received a scholarship to Dartmouth University where she became a legendary player at the Ivy League school. While there she won the university's highest honor, the Kenneth Archibald Prize as best all-around athlete. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Apricot Yarn & Supply Celebrates 1 Year in Liberty Station Apricot Yarn & Supply, the peninsula's only yarn shop, recently celebrated the one year anniversary of their opening in Liberty Station. The local yarn shop is owned and operated by Sara Heckman, a Point Loma native, artist, and mother of three schoolage daughters. Since opening, Apricot Yarn & Supply has received overwhelming support from the local fiber arts community. "The inspiration and support of the community has been instrumental in our success! We have met so many amazing knitters and crocheters who have shared their fiber journey with us. Our goal was to create a beautiful space for inspiration, where you can come and spend time creating, learning and socializing. Without each of our customers, that would not have been possible." The local yarn shop community (a "LYS" is classified as an independently operated shop that specializes in yarn and the fiber arts, caters to the local community) recently held their annual San Diego Yarn Crawl - a multi-day self-guided tour of all the yarn
shops in the county (and 2 alpaca farms). Apricot Yarn & Supply participated in the Yarn Crawl for the first time in 2018, and saw a great influx of new visitors from the far corners of San Diego County and Southern California descend upon the Liberty Station shop. During the Yarn Crawl, Apricot Yarn & Supply also hosted yarn makers and designers for "trunk shows" to highlight the latest yarn offerings. "I look forward to each day. I feel like we're just getting started!" -Sara Heckman, Proprietor Apricot Yarn & Supply offers classes, lessons for beginners & kids, open social knit/crochet get-togethers, and other fun events.
