San Diego County YMCA fined for chlorine spill
BEATING THE HEAT
BY NEAL PUTNAM | THE BEACON
The YMCA of San Diego County was fined $17,000 on Oct. 20 and ordered to abide by numerous probation conditions for a chlorine spill that sickened 79 elementary students and eight adults in 2015. The YMCA, as a nonprofit corporation, pleaded guilty to four felony counts and one misdemeanor that involved a hazardous waste spill, which occurred two years ago in Santee that also went into a storm drain. City cleans up riverbed, offers services to homeless living there As part of an aggressive push to stop the hepatitis A outbreak, Mayor Kevin Faulconer and city council members Scott Sherman and Lorie Zapf on Sept. 29 joined city crews to clear the San Diego River of debris and to relocate homeless individuals to safe and sanitary living conditions. “We are committed to beating hepatitis A and doctors are clear that starts with vaccinating our most at-risk residents and keeping public areas clean. I am working with county nurses to bring vaccinations directly to homeless individuals and today we’re clearing debris to keep the riverbed clean,” said Faulconer. “This is going to help stop the
spread of the virus, protect our most vulnerable residents and restore our natural habitat. Our sanitation efforts will continue for as long as needed to address this public health emergency.” With a number of San Diego’s homeless population living along the San Diego River, the city and county are focused on conducting sanitation and vaccination efforts for the at-risk population living along the riverbed. Faulconer has directed crews from the city’s Environmental Services Department to clear the riverbed of trash and debris while the San Diego Police Department’s Homeless Out-
reach Team offers shelter opportunities and supportive services to homeless individuals there. County health officials are providing onsite hepatitis A vaccinations. “The San Diego River is a sensitive wetland that must be protected,” said Sherman. “For their own health and safety, it is vitally important to remove homeless encampments from the river and offer individuals the help and services they need. This action is an important first step.” The cleanup complements existing year-round efforts by the city to clean and preserve the environmentally-sensitive
habitat. The city is planning additional cleanup activities over the coming weeks as part of the ongoing regional effort to stop the spread of the hepatitis A virus. As part of an annual contract with the San Diego River Foundation, the city funds weekly river inspections and an annual inspection that covers the length of the river. The River Park Foundation removed more than 66 tons of trash and debris from the river bed so far this year. It is estimated that 90 percent of trash and debris can be attributed to homeless individuals living SEE Riverbed Page 4
YMCA hired former District Attorney Paul Pfingst, who represented them Friday. Approximately seven directors and employees were in the audience when San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon placed the YMCA on two years probation. The terms of probation affect all YMCA facilities in the county. The judge ordered all YMCA facilities to allow unannounced inspections by the county Department of Environmental Health and to improve its procedures for handling hazardous SEE YMCA, Page 2
Citywide Hepatitis A data released BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
Since November 2016, when a county wide hepatitis A outbreak was first detected, 507 people have been infected, 19 (3.7 percent) have died, and more than 80,000 others have been vaccinated, county health authorities said. Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus, which is highly contagious. It can cause liver disease, lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting months. In some cases, it can be fatal. Contamination can
occur when persons infected with hepatitis a do not wash their hands properly after going to the bathroom, then touch other objects or food items. Hepatitis A virus does not always cause symptoms. Some with the virus have no symptoms — fever, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes (jaundice), stomach pain, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools and diarrhea. Adults are more likely to have symptoms than children. Additionally, county SEE Hepatitis A, Page 2

to the judge. “These people,” said Pfingst, gesturing to the audience, “have worked tirelessly to put these changes in effect.” Also sentenced to three years probation was Lee Joseph Ladley, 64, the YMCA facilities director who now is the YMCA director for one facility in Spring Valley. Ladley was fined $6,150, and given credit for one day in jail for a previous booking when he and the YMCA were first charged on Oct. 19, 2016 by the City of San Diego Dis-
trict Attorney’s office. On Oct. 20, 2015, a tube which carried chlorine from a storage tank to a swimming pool broke and came into contact with another acidic chemical. Chlorine gas fumes in a plume drifted to the nearby Rio Seco Elementary School in Santee. Students sensed a bleach-like smell and 79 students and eight adults were treated for nausea, burning eyes and skin, and shortness of breath in the parking lot of a hospital. Pfingst informed the judge the
YMCA has already paid $11,482 in medical costs for the victims, and $37,416 in two other agencies’ expenses in the incident. Shamoon ordered them to pay $321 in medical costs for two adults. The judge granted the motion by Pfingst and Ladley’s attorney, Michael Berg, to reduce all the felony convictions to misdemeanors. “There has been great progress made,” said Shamoon. Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth McClutchey objected to the charges being reduced, saying “The YMCA
has not done what they need to do.” “They were still having violations a month, 1 1/2 months, two months after this horrific event,” said McClutchey. “It didn’t open their eyes well enough.” Sharon Preece, an environmental protection expert, testified she inspected 11 YMCA facilities in the county and found violations at all of them. She said there were six employee training violations.
the task of combatting the disease a real challenge, said Dr. Wilma CONTINUED FROM Page 1 Wooten, public health officer for the County of San Diego. health reported roughly two-thirds “It's (homeless/drug abusers) a of the victims have been homeless difficult-to-reach population,” she and/or illicit drug users. That makes said. “So we've had to creatively go
where they are (on the street) because these people typically don't go to health clinics. We've put out teams of public health nurses and law enforcement homeless outreach officers to help us vaccinate those people.”
The ongoing hepatitis outbreak was unexpected. “Typically, every month we have two to three cases of hepatitis A that is travel-related, associated with someone who has gone to a country where there is a high prevalence of the disease where they can get exposed to it, and then bring it back with them,” said Wooten noting, “It (hepatitis) has a long incubation period — 15 to 50 days.” Wooten said there was a spike in hepatitis A cases starting this March, which prompted her to declare a local public health emergency. And, because infections are most common among the homeless who often have no access to sanitary facilities, the county’s efforts began turning toward installing hand washing stations and doing street cleaning in early summer. One theory advanced to explain the present hepatitis outbreak, is that California's discontinuation of single-use plastic bags has helped spread the disease. Many people have discounted the plastic-bag theory, but not Wooten. “Yes, absolutely, we know people use the bags for that (defecation),” she said. “We know people don’t have bathrooms and they can put bags in cans and buckets and maintain good hygiene. That’s why we
put plastic bags in the hygiene kits we’re handing out. That’s what we expect people will use them for.” The San Diego County Public Health Officer strongly recommends the following groups be vaccinated with the hepatitis A vaccine: People who are homeless. Users of illegal drugs. Men who have sex with men. People with chronic liver disease, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C. People who work with, provide services to, or clean up after the homeless and/or illegal drug users Food handlers who have adult clients. Food handlers are not at increased risk, but if infected can impact a large number of people. People with clotting factor disorders. People who conduct laboratory research with the virus. Travelers to countries where hepatitis A is common. People in close personal contact with adopted children from countries where hepatitis A is common. Wooten said the county has employed a three-pronged approach to addressing the hepatitis outbreak: vaccination, sanitation and education.

materials. Pfingst filed documents noting the YMCA has since paid $705,053 in facility improvements such as new chemical pumps, chemical monitoring systems, berms surrounding chemical storage areas, and remodeling pump room doors. “The YMCA is changing its entire culture and organization to try to respond to provide better aquatic safety inside the pool,” said Pfingst

near the river. “I appreciate Mayor Faulconer for cleaning up this environmentallysensitive habitat and for helping to prevent the spread of hepatitis A,” said Zapf. The city has a similar contract with I Love a Clean San Diego, where the city sponsors 15 cleanups a year – three of which occurred in the San Diego River last year.
The riverbed clean-up is the latest step in an unprecedented sanitation effort by the city to eradicate the virus from public areas including sidewalks in the downtown area and other communities based on need. The city has also significantly expanded 24-hour access to public restrooms in areas near large homeless populations. In coordination with the city, the county has installed 63 hand-washing stations throughout downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
First flu death of season reported in San Diego An 86-year-old San Diego man died of complications due to influenza and is the first local, flu-related death reported this season. The unvaccinated man died on Oct. 1 after a brief hospitalization. Last season, the first flu death occurred Oct. 4, and 86 other San Diego County residents died from influenza, including two children.
So far this season, 203 lab-confirmed influenza cases have been reported, compared to 60 at this same point last year. The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine every year. The current flu vaccines offer protection against pandemic H1N1, as well as influenza A H3N2 and influenza B strains.

has minor children from Question: Myhis husband previous marriage. The children live with us and their biological mother is not present in their lives. I love my husband’s children as my own and would like to adopt them. Is there a way for me to do this? Absolutely! A Stepparent Adoption may be done so long as you and your spouse are legally married or registered as domestic partners. In a stepparent adoption, one of the biological parents remains the child’s parent. If the other biological parent (in this case the mother) is willing to consent to the adoption and terminate their parental rights, then a Stepparent Adoption can be a fairly simple process. The biological parent that is terminating their rights to the child will no longer have any right to visit the child and will no longer be responsible for paying child support.
Answer:
Virginia Weber Laskowitz (retired) & Shannon T. O’Neill
When the biological parent does not consent to terminating their parental rights, the adoption is then called a contested stepparent adoption. These adoptions are much more difficult to have granted by the judge because you must show that the other birth parent has abandoned the child for over a year and not paid any child support or voluntarily not seen or talked to the child. A contested stepparent adoption may also be granted if the other birth parent has been convicted of a felony, the facts of which are of such a nature as to prove the unfitness of the parent to have the future custody of the child. As a stepmom, Shannon O’Neill understands the up’s and down’s that stepparents experience and she loves assisting families to become complete through legal adoption. Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions regarding the stepparent adoption process.

While Point Loma residents disagree about many aspects of vehicle traffic, two painted arrows on the pavement of Catalina Boulevard have brought them together in unanimous harmony. Call it "The case of the awkwardly aimed arrows." Traffic engineers from the City of San Diego recently re-striped the western terminus of Chatsworth Boulevard at the traffic light where it intersects with Catalina Boulevard. Added was a second lane for vehicles making left turns from westbound Chatsworth to southbound Catalina. But when these two lanes of vehicles enter Catalina, there is reduced width and a short distance to deal with as the intersection of Point Loma Avenue looms quickly. Engineers solved this issue by creating a very quick and short merge stretch so that vehicles are forced down to a single lane in the short space approaching Point Loma Avenue where there is another traffic signal and left turn lane for vehicles to turn eastbound. Two large arrows were painted on the surface of Catalina directing motorists to quickly merge back into one lane. But there is one small problem with the arrows: They are painted to direct vehicles into the lane that

ends... not the lane that continues south on Catalina, perplexing pointers that have added confusion instead of clarity. Confused motorists are hesitating after making the left turn, some slowing nearly to a stop and others accelerating rapidly as they jockey for position on their journey towards their destinations further out the Point. Several nearby residents are so fed up with the confusing arrows they have bragged on social media about their determination to remove the
first one by picking at the painted pavement. Much of this arrow is now gone. But the second arrow remains in pristine condition as motorist after motorist makes a routine left turn only to be confronted by the perplexing pattern. The intersection is used by thousands of vehicles daily who commute to work at the federal facilities at the south end of Catalina or visit Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and the famed Cabrillo National Monument.
Bryan Pease enters District 2 city council race Public interest attorney Bryan Pease has entered the race for the District 2 city council seat. Pease is best known locally for winning the decade-long legislative and court battle to protect the San Diego seals. When the city’s own planning commission attempted to overrule the vote of the elected city council, Pease won three lawsuits to enforce the year-round guideline rope and pupping season closure of Children’s Pool. Pease is one of the top-rated civil rights attorneys in San Diego, having met the stringent selection criteria of the national rating agency SuperLawyers. Currently, there are no attorneys on the San Diego City Council. Pease is currently representing the San Diego branch of the NAACP in its lawsuit against the El Cajon Police Department and San Diego County Sheriff ’s Department for shutting down peaceful vigils in the wake of the Alfred Olango shooting and arresting individuals for refusing to disperse a prayer circle. “I have a history of fighting for what’s right, even if it’s not popular,” said Pease. “As a city council member, I will continue working to protect the public interest, civil rights, consumers and the environment, and will push the city to embrace the evidence based, tax-

From 2008-2015, Pease served as a board member of

OB resident, Mercy Baron, knows her BBQ BY DAVE SCHWAB | THE BEACON
Obecian Mercy Baron used to be “just” a Kansas City Barbecue Society Certified BBQ Judge. But she has since upgraded, having been asked by the CEO of the 6th Annual World Food Championships to be a Top 10 Judge in November. The 2017 World Food Championships, to be held Nov. 8 to 12 in Orange Beach, Ala. with $300,000 in prize money, will highlight some of the most iconic cuisines around the globe. Categories include barbecue, chili, sandwich, burger, dessert, bacon, seafood, steak and recipe. As in years past, the recipe category is based on a theme of food. The theme for the 2017 World Recipe Championship this year is chicken. Reacting to being named a top 10 judge, Baron noted the position has no material rewards. “While it's a great honor and a fantastic opportunity to further my career, it does not pay anything, not even travel expenses,” said Baron. “There is no pay whatsoever. It's a volunteer position.” So why is she doing it then? “You do it because you love barbecue, and because it's fun to do,” Baron said. “You meet great people. I'm trying to turn it into other opportunities.” Besides, added Baron, “I'm the only one (judge) from San Diego in this year's competition, whereas last
year, we had the owners of two different restaurants as judges.” Baron said WFC is a big deal. “This is the sixth annual WCS, and there will be some 400 competitors from all over the world,” she said, adding she judged at the competition, in a lesser capacity, three years ago when it was in Las Vegas. Baron has all the right credentials for her post. “I was sanctioned and taught by the Kansas City Barbecue Society,” she said. KCBS is A nonprofit dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbecue. It is the world's largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts with more than 20,000 members worldwide. KCBS sanctions over 500 barbeque contests worldwide, as well as serving as a clearinghouse of barbecue information. “You would not believe it, KCBS sanctioned me, and I was trained by them five years ago,” Baron said. “I took their class that I had to apply for on a website.” To defray expenses, Baron has received sponsorships from local businesses including OB Noodle House, Mother's Saloon, Raglan Public House, Beach Sweets, Specialty Produce, BBQ House and Te Mana Cafe. “I figure expenses between the flight, hotel and a rental car to be approximately $1,200 to $1,500 for the four days I'm there,” Baron said

James Randerson’s studies on the relationships among humans, the ecosystem and the environment have advanced the understanding of the effects of climate change, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. Randerson, who was raised in Point Loma and went to Point Loma High School, is one of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates recently announced by the academy. Considered one of the highest honors in science, NAS membership is based on distinguished and continued achievements in original research. “I am grateful to be recognized by the National Academy of Sciences and by the community,” said Randerson, Chancellor’s professor of Earth system science. “The commitment to interdisciplinary environmental research here at University of California, Irvine is remarkable and is a big factor in my ability to conduct research about the changing Earth system. I am also very thankful to my fellow faculty, colleagues, students and postdocs here.” Physical sciences dean Kenneth Janda said he considers Randerson a key member of the Earth system science team at UCI, adding: “We are very fortunate that professor Randerson has chosen the UCI School of Physical Sciences as his academic home. He has done groundbreaking work on the impact of climate change on ecosystems and has contributed significantly to improving the predictability of such effects.” Janda noted that Randerson will soon helm UCI’s new Center for Geospatial Data Solutions for Climate and the Environment, with the goal of moving toward more reliable solutions to environmental problems and applying those solutions at a more local level.
UCI chancellor Howard Gillman said that Randerson’s research is making a difference in Southern California and around the world. “His work has influenced policymakers who are concerned about public safety, giving him a prominent place in the longstanding tradition of UCI scientists conducting research for the common good,” Gillman said. “He joins more than 40 other current UCI faculty members who have been welcomed into one of the National Academies. We couldn’t be happier or more proud of his achievement.” Randerson is well-known in the scientific community for his research into changes in the global carbon cycle, wildfires and climate change. He and his colleagues use remote sensing data from a network of NASA satellites, most notably the Earth-observing Aqua, Terra and Aura spacecraft; the Orbiting Carbon Observatory; the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment; and Landsat 8. His group employs a suite of models to interpret the data and assess future climate change scenarios. “I feel that my work has gotten more engrossing over the years as my group has had access to increasingly richer remote sensing data and stronger models,” Randerson said. “These tools are giving us the ability to develop a real-time picture of what’s happening around the globe, which is enabling us to provide information to better inform policymakers, other academic researchers and agencies trying to manage ecosystems.” The National Academy of Sciences has 2,290 active members, including 23 from UCI; nine of those are in the School of Physical Sciences.

Pointers pull off big win against rival Madison, 38-22 BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON
Since the opening of Lindbergh Field in 1928, airplanes have been the only objects flying above Pete Ross Stadium. But in the last few weeks, that has changed. What new objects are now flying over Bennie Edens Field? Footballs. Yes, the Pointer football team, long known for its running game dating back to the days of legendary coach Bennie Edens, has been starting to mix in a passing game and the early returns are positive. Passing was a significant factor last Friday night as the host Pointers played what might be called a "statement game" in defeating one of its toughest rivals, laying a 38-22 smackdown on Western League rival Madison, the county's No.3 ranked team. "Last year we had a very tough loss to them and we wanted to come out with some fire," said wide receiver JL Skinner, only a junior, who is 6feet-3-inches tall and used his height to catch five passes for 171 yards (34.2 yards per catch) and three touchdowns. "We had a better mindset this year, we practiced hard and studied film and we were a different team this week." The big win moved the Pointers to 5-3 on the season, but more importantly 2-1 in a very tough Western League. Madison fell to 6-2 overall with a league mark of 1-2 after a loss to St. Augustine the previous week. The Warhawks first appeared on the Pointer schedule in 2010, defeating the Dogs 33-7 in what became an annual loss except for a 2011 tie. These are the same Warhawks that won a state division 2-AA championship last year. The Pointers' stat sheet shows it was a balanced attack that was too much for the Warhawks to defend. The Pointers ran 69 plays during the game, gaining 227 net yards passing and 197 on the ground for a

game total of 439 yards. That's an average of 6.4 yards per play. Quarterback Kyle Grady has worked hard to improve his game and his efforts have clearly paid off. For the game, he completed 14 of 21 pass attempts for 242 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, he added 91 yards running, either on quarterback keeper plays or when he found his receivers covered. That gives the senior a total of 333 yards in total offense, impressive numbers like those he's put up for the last three games. All three of Grady's touchdown passes went to Skinner, a tall, surehanded target who leaped to snatch balls thrown above smaller defenders by Grady. Skinner simply put on a clinic with his hands and aftercatch running which he even displayed on a 28-yard interception return where he escaped numerous tacklers. "Grady has always been a really good quarterback who could throw the ball," Pointer head coach Mike Hastings said, "but our offensive
coaches (Paul Lawrence, Courtney Logan and Joe Radovich) have taught them to go out and execute and these kids now believe in what we're teaching. Teams don't know how to defend us with the balance we have now." Pointer coaches were also impressed with senior Brian Yepez, who stepped in when leading rusher Josh Ball was sidelined with a knee injury. Yepez gained 67 yards on 14 carries, a 4.7 yard average, and scored two touchdowns. The Pointers' chances didn't look good when the Warhawks scored just 43 seconds into the game on a long run. But the Pointers came right back to tie with their own drive that begun after Michael Blakely's 55-yard kickoff return. Grady passed 43 yards to Skinner for the score. After forcing a Warhawks punt, the Pointers drove again, with Grady's 17-yard scramble and 13yard pass to Malik Moore preceding Yepez's first score as the Pointers took a 14-7 lead late in the first
quarter they would not relinquish. A Mathew Fa'alele fumble recovery led to an Andy Medina field goal for a 17-7 Pointer lead after another long pass to Skinner and shorter one to Moore set up this score. The Warhawks pulled to within 17-14 before Grady and Skinner connected on a 55-yard scoring play for a 24-14 Dog lead. Perhaps the back-breaker for the Warhawks took place with 29 seconds left in the first half. Lined up for another Medina field goal, the visitors jumped offsides giving the Dogs a first down. They bit quickly when Grady hit Skinner again, this time near the sideline in the end zone. Skinner was quick to get both feet down inbounds for the touchdown and a 31-14 halftime Pointer lead. Each team added a second half touchdown, with Yepez's seven-yard run providing the hosts' points. When they had possession, the Pointers wisely went to a groundoriented game to keep the game clock running down. Blakely's pass
interception and 40 yard return ended the Warhawks' hopes with just 1:22 left to play. "(This game) just shows that hard work pays off," Skinner said. "We need to come out every week with the same mindset and keep doing what we're doing. I feel we can take on anyone in San Diego. We're going to play Pointer football and not back down from anyone." "Our kids really believed we could take it to Madison," said Hastings after the game. "We have the kids that can do it. They came to practice every day with a mission. I couldn't be prouder of the team." Next up for the Pointers is another opponent they've struggled with over the years: Cathedral Catholic. The Dons are struggling this year (44 overall, 1-1 in league) and lost to Madison 35-14. "I think our kids have confidence now they can go up against anybody in the county and be successful," Hastings said. "What our kids did tonight proves we need to be right up there with the very best." The game is at Cathedral Catholic with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
Extra points: This game was the National Football Foundation "Game of the Week," and representatives on hand selected Skinner as Player of the Game. After the season, Skinner will attend a banquet and be recognized with other weekly winners from around the county. Former Pointer Jamal Agnew, now a rookie with the Detroit Lions of the NFL, was on hand to see the Pointers' big win. He congratulated the team following the game and encouraged them to work hard the rest of the season. He was able to return home with the Lions on their bye week. The Pointer JV team moved to 3-5 on the season with a 44-6 win over Mira Mesa. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com
PLHS to celebrate 92nd Homecoming: Themed floats, music genres and more BY SCOTT HOPKINS | THE BEACON
Students and staff at Point Loma High celebrated the school's 92nd Homecoming recently with six days of fun and events that added fun and merriment to the rigors of everyday classes and assignments. Each class has been working for weeks after school hours and on weekends on its float for the halftime parade during the Homecoming football game that is part of the week's most-anticipated event. The theme for this year's parade was "music genres," with the freshman class choosing rock, the sophomores country, the juniors rap and seniors selected "2000 throwbacks." Selected as members of the Homecoming Court this year were fresh-
men Kaitlyn Vedder and Donvan Davalos, sophomores Talia Baxter and a young man who was removed and not allowed to participate. Juniors were Paige Teague and Tim Schuhmann. A change this year, according to ASB Advisor Amy Denney, was the election of three seniors to the court with the announcement of the King and Queen made during the Friday football game. Seniors Taylor Ybarra, Jasmine Anderson Nick Fithen and Travis Choy were members of the court while Kyle Johnson and Avin Niknafs were named King and Queen. The week began with "Military Monday," a day for students and staff to salute the nation's men and
women in uniform. Tuesday was designated as "Teacher Twin Tuesday," with students coming to school dressed as their favorite teacher. Some very creative costumes were reported. Next up was Meme Wednesday. Throwback Thursday followed with students dressing in outfits dating back to ancient times before their birth such as the 1980's and 90's. Finally, on Friday, the students and staff honored Breast Cancer Awareness Week with a "PINK OUT!" of their own. That night, all players wore pink as part of their football uniforms as well. The Friday night football game was a huge success as the Fighting Pointers bounced back from a bitter

defeat by St. Augustine to dominate Mira Mesa by a 35-6 score. Named as King and Queen were Kyle Johnson and Avin Niknafs. And, as seems to be tradition, the float by the senior
class was judged first place. The week's festivities came to a close on Oct. 15 when 950 students packed a sold-out Pointer gym for the annual Homecoming dance.

Liberty Station’s Arts District 10th anniversary: Celebrating thriving culture, art and civic duty BY LUCIA VITI | THE BEACON
Arts District of Liberty Station celebrated its 10th Anniversary, shouting, “Well done!” to San Diego’s arts, civic, business and philanthropic leaders instrumental in the historic transformation from military base to thriving cultural, civic and arts district. The event hosted over 200 people to acknowledge accomplishments 17 years in the making. In 1997, after 75 years as a naval station, The Naval Training Center (NTC) padlocked its doors. In 2000, Corky McMillin Companies donated $2 million to the NTC Foundation to facilitate a founding board chaired by Murray Galinson. A dedicated team worked tirelessly and diligently to transform the venue into the signature community presently showcased as one of San Diego’s largest arts, culture and dining districts. Nearly 120 museums and galleries, art studios, dance companies, educational groups, creative and retail space along with fine
dining and entertainment venues, grace 128-acres, spanning 38 historic buildings. NTC’s executive director, Alan Ziter described the day as a “rewarding” honor to recognize the team devoted to the “development and history of the Arts District,” while noting the “founding board, the city leaders and Corky McMillin Companies for their leadership and vision.” Ziter described the closure of the Naval Base as slicing into San Diego’s prestige. Faced with the daunting task of “competing for interests” for the land and its buildings while “meeting Federal requirements for restoring 8, 000 civilian jobs,” founding board members were “handpicked for this volunteer endeavor.” “Given 26 shuttered Navy buildings in varying conditions, we had the task of creating a new landmark civic, arts and cultural district – without city money,” he said. “The Corky McMillin Company shared the community’s vision. From our
dreams and start-up funds, we invested over 85 million dollars into a closed military base to create a landmark destination that hosts over 700,000 people each year. And we’re still growing!” According to Ziter, the excitement “is just beginning.” Ziter announced the prospective opening of a 300capacity live theatre. Through the generosity of the Laub Family Fund, the NTC Foundation “engaged” a theatre consultant who determined “through extensive community outreach,” a need for a performing arts theatre, especially among the Arts District resident dance groups. A fund-raising capital campaign will soon be launched. “Planning is underway for a new 300-seat theater for dance, music, theater and film in the former Navy Base Exchange in the heart of Liberty Station,” said Ziter. When asked to share his sentiments in the growth of Liberty Station Ziter stated, “I consider it a privilege to work with Liberty Station.

secure community support. “These beautiful and historic buildings reside on a Navy Base that most San Diegans have never visited,” he said. The vicinity of the base, Loma Portal, was not often frequented unless people were passing through to Cabrillo Point. We were challenged to invite people to share our vision of possibilities.” In addition, the founding board “had much to learn,” including the buildings state of disrepair, renovation costs, the subject for each building, the selection of art and civic groups and the genesis of the financial backing. Ziter graciously thanks those who worked to tackle the issues and facilitate solutions. “I salute the founding board and chair member Murray Galinson and Corky McMillin, who, along with the employees of the Corky McMillin Companies, were committed to seeing this project through in a way that honored the Navy’s history and while creating an arts and culture center that would become a community legacy,” he said. “Also included – Mayor Susan Golding and councilmembers, especially Byron Wear, who worked to ensure that we best serve the citizens of San Diego while serving as a model for other communities.” Ziter is working to complete a Barracks Hotel by 2019 and the livetheatre performance venue by 2020. “We encourage everyone to ‘Salute the Season’ at Liberty Station to ‘Skate, Create and Celebrate,’ he said. “The Rady Children’s Ice Rink opens November 19th plus a holiday light art installation and 90’ holiday tree lighting will illuminate on November 29th. Liberty Station is the place to visit for holiday gifts with a creative twist.” Toni Robin of TR/PR, the public relations agency for the NTC Foundation described the celebration as an “opportunity to publicly thank founding board members for their vision and fundraising.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

the food at Roast is made in-house, so they make it from scratch every day. They make the food right in front of you and you can take it with you right away. They also have a lot of allergy-friendly options. “We produce food that is healthy and good for you and that makes you feel good about yourself,” said Carmack. Carmack first opened a Roast in Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, four years ago, but she often traveled to San Diego and wanted to open a new restaurant here. She decided to open the Roast at Liberty
Public Market because she wanted it to be located among other local restaurants. “We wanted our neighbors to be like-minded local business owners and we wanted to work with people in our community,” said Carmack. At the moment, Carmack is looking at locations in downtown and Little Italy to open another Roast restaurant. She plans to open more restaurants in the future. “We are a good alternative for people who don’t have time to cook at home, but still want to eat good food that tastes great,” said Carmack.

Sunnie’s Ocean Beach Cafe: A former Charger is serving up Mexican food, coffee and more

One of the newest diners in Ocean Beach is named for the daughter of the owner, who is named for a favorite pastime in the beach community. Sunnie's at 4723 Point Loma Ave., formerly Hippie-style Java Beach, is owned by Israel Stanley, a Point Loma High grad and former San Diego Charger. Here's the story behind the new name. “It is my daughter's name,” said Stanley. 'That's her nickname. Her real name is Sunset — named after Sunset Cliffs.” After he found out a girl was on the way, Stanley and his family decided it was entirely appropriate to name his new eatery after what they like to do. “We love watching the sunset, and Sunset Cliffs is our favorite spot to watch sunsets,” he added.

And customers at Sunnies are appreciative of the new look and feel of the place. “I just love it since they changed (formats) here,” said Kimberly from Seattle, who was down visiting friends in OB. “I love this place. I think it's brilliant that you have Mexican breakfast — because we love it. It adds a nice flavor to this area. It needed a fresh little place like this.” Stanley said Sunnies is more than “just” a breakfast place. “It's not just Mexican-style breakfast,” he said. “We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. You get to sit down to five-star food, for to-go fastfood prices. That is it in a nutshell.” Stanley noted you'd spend double or more for the meals he serves at many other places in town. ‘California Screamin’ sheds some darkness on palm trees and sunshine
BY LUCIA VITI | THE BEACON
The reality of nightmares is not only alive and well in San Diego, it’s perfectly prepared for Halloween! Just ask resident horror fiction writer Brian Asman, a skilled artist who delights in gore. Noted for his short stories dripping with absolute weirdness, some even lined with creep, Asman is one of 16 writers featured in “California Screamin’,” a new publication sure to delight and entertain those who relish the ghostly, sinister, eerie, absurd and disturbed. The eclectic array of stories, edited by Danielle Kaheaku, transforms the land of “perpetual sunshine, swaying palm trees and blue waters lapping at sandy beaches” into California’s dark side of “wraithlike fog, dense shadows and hellish heat.” Stories lined with “primeval specters, soured fantasies, transplanted vampires and bizarre geography,” tap into a “Twilight Zone” of fiction sure to surprise America’s Finest City. Asman’s story, Bumming Smokes, leaves little to the imagination of “I need a smoke.” An odd, dry humor conjures up images of San Diego’s clicks, leaving no doubt of his opinion of “those” people. He writes, “Especially after the last lady – typical upper-middle class Whole Foods shopper. Some kind of Japanese or Chinese symbols linked up the inside of her arm, wearing a tank top covered in mandalas. Carrying a purse with a faux-Warhol photo print of Nelson Mandelas. The kind of chick who actually thinks the universe cares about her. Like
Jupiter’s trying to make sure all her stupid chakras are aligned or something.” Admitting that he “writes stuff, mostly horror, but also whatever weirdness pops into my head,” Asman also confesses to loving dogs “way more than people,” and enjoying a barrel-aged beer on a sunny Southern California day with punk rock blaring in the background. Bumming Smokes is not for the faint of heart. Nicotine aficionados, however, are sure to enjoy the journey of the jones. “California Screamin’” is replete with stories to engage an audience who enjoys the art of the bizarre. As noted in the introduction written by famed writer and Southern California resident, Jonathan Maberry, “The stories in this book represent, for some of the contributors, their first published works. They are, without a doubt or reservation, worlds better than my first story.” Maberry is a New York Times bestselling author and comic book writer. Covering the genres of suspense, thriller, horror, science fiction, fantasy and action. Mayberry has won the Bram Stoker Award five times. He describes “California Screamin’”as a book that contains “terrific stories. Lots of shadows. Lots of horror.” The self-described weird kid applies the same label to the authors. “My readers are weird, because – like me – they dig that kind of thing,” he writes. “So are these writers. Weird and delightfully delicious.” No ghastly ghoul or party should be without a copy of “California Screamin’” to highlight Halloween!
