OB Street Fair to lure 70,000 to Newport Avenue Chili cook-off, music power annual event BY ANTHONY GENTILE | THE BEACON Even with summer heat on the horizon, the forecast next weekend in Ocean Beach calls for chili weather. The 31st annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival — predicted to draw as many as 70,000 funseekers throughout the day — takes wing Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. primarily along the 4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue, the OB Pier and Abbott Street. “Our fair is free and parking is free and the shuttles are free,” said Ocean Beach MainStreet Association Executive Director Denny Knox. “You can bring the whole family, and you only spend what you are going to spend on vendor booths and in local stores.” Things get started with the event’s tastiest tradition — the chili cook-off. Three teams have been added to the competition for a total of 28, and all competing recipes can be tasted with $10 tickets that go on sale at 10 a.m. Individual tasting tickets will also be available for $1. “That has always been a big concern — people racing here to get the chili,” Knox said. Street fairgoers who miss out on the chili competition itself can satisfy their hunger with a $2 bowl of “committee

New food items include shrimp Creole, red beans and rice, pork tacos, ribs and healthy and vegan options. Also new this year is a relaxation area in the parking lot behind Winston’s Beach Club, taking the place of last year’s teenage fun area. Knox said this area will give people a chance to take a minute away from the bustle of Newport Avenue. “We’re going to have a climbing wall, tables and chairs for people to sit at,” Knox said. “If you want to take a load off, that’s the place to go.” In a move that will please the art lovers out there, the street fair’s Artists’ Alley has expanded. Knox said the area that is filled with unique creations and demonstrations is about one-third larg-

OB STREET FAIR:
How it all began … BY HILLARY SCHULER-JONES | THE BEACON The Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival drew about 70,000 people last year, according to police estimates, so it may be hard to believe that the event kicked off 31 years ago with just a pile of T-shirts and a visionary dream for a fireworks display. In 1980, Mike James and his four brothers were running James Gang Graphics, a design and printing shop in Ocean Beach, and he had recently taken on the role of president of the newly formed Merchant’s Association (now known as the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association). James and his brothers, as well as other local business owners like John Small of the Sunshine Co. Saloon and

Denny Knox, now the executive director of the OB MainStreet Association, were looking for ways to draw more customers to the quiet coastal area. “At the time, there weren’t very many customers coming down to Ocean Beach, so it was a pretty bleak picture for many of the merchants down here,” Knox said. James wanted to bring back the fireworks show that had once dazzled visitors at the end of Ocean Beach Pier. The problem was, there was no money for the event. Tapping into the family’s entrepreneurial spirit, James came up with the idea to sellT-shirts, designed and printed by James Gang Graphics, to advertise the revival of the fireworks display — which ironically SEE HISTORY, Page 14

Wonderland brings back old-time family fun BY DEBBIE HATCH | THE BEACON Smiling faces will abound at the Wonderland children’s area of the 31st annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival on Saturday, June 26. “Come and spend the whole day listening to music and having fun in the sun,” said Claudia Jack, associate director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, which organizes and produces the annual event. The Wonderland zone is named after the first amusement park in Ocean Beach and will offer lively and exciting activities for children and parents alike. The original Wonderland Amusement Park first opened on July 4, 1913 at Voltaire and Abbott streets on the sand. It was home to a large roller coaster, a dance pavilion, merry-go-round and a children’s playground. In 1916, most of it was washed away by tides.
Fast-forward to today’s street fair, where children ages 3 to 10 can recapture a little bit of that carefree magic and enjoy carnival-style rides — including a huge slide — for affordable prices. Pony rides, for those 6 months and older and weighing less than 100 pounds, will be available for reasonable fares as well, said organizers. Reaching a hand into a freshlymade bag of kettlekorn, sipping on an ice-cold slushy and eating a hotdog in the sun could make everyone feel like a kid again. Enjoy the comfortable seating and plan on spending the day in Ocean Beach. Vendors will share their wares, including clothing and other goodies. The Wonderland children’s area will be located in the Rite Aid parking lot and at the east end of Newport Avenue by Sunset Cliffs Boulevard Plenty of activities and rides will be available for reasonable rates in the Wonderland children’s area of the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival on June 26. Artists’ Alley offers unique creations Community mural remains a legacy BY DEBBIE HATCH | THE BEACON One of the more popular elements of the OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off is Artists’ Alley. So popular is the demand for unique creations that Artists’ Alley will be even bigger and better than in past years, encompassing both sides of Cable Street and boasting 60 booths. That’s one-third larger than past years. Be sure to check them all out, as some favorites will be in new locations this year. Jewelry, paint-
ings, photographs and more will delight the eyes. Tie-dye T-shirts and tutu vendors will appeal to Obecians and visitors — from traditional hippies to trendy fashionistas. “Usually people notice really quickly that everything in there is handmade and eclectic,” said Faren Fhear, who has served as the volunteer coordinator of Artists’ Alley for 12 years. She said the artists enjoy the Ocean Beach SEE ARTISTS, Page 14

The main stage area of the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival — located near the scenic OB Pier — boasts an unbeatable setting for dancing and listening to music. A beer garden will be located next door in the pier parking lot.

Though there is crossover in their duties, Wigler chiefly handles the main-stage talent, while Schiele works with the other four stages. According to Schiele, nearly 500 performers are in contention to be selected each year, “most of whom are worthy of performance time based on their talent.” “The easy part is booking 45 performance slots or so, Schiele said. “The hard part is deciding which 450 or so to not include. I hate that part.” Schiele cited three main criteria as being part of the selection process. “Talent, ‘localness’ and professionalism.” he said. “We try to feature ‘our’ talent in Ocean Beach and around San Diego because, frankly, we are proud of the abundance of great performers.” Schiele also takes into consideration the family-friendly nature of the day. “Something new and interesting is always good, but it has to be fun with a sense of quality,” Schiele said. “Ocean Beach is very open-minded about creative stuff. However, it has to be cool for everybody, including the baby in a stroller and the grandma who’s pushing the stroller.” Wigler agreed, saying it is important to consider a band’s overall draw and audience. “For the main stage, I like to keep it at a level that’s a party, but not so it’s a situation that might explode,” Wigler said. “We’ve had offers from even bigger bands to play, but when you consider the layout of the stage and the audience, it’s important to keep things at the right level.” Jason Ott, frontman for the Led Zeppelin tribute act Dazed and Confused (3:30 p.m. on the Bacon Sun Stage) that played at the street fair in 2009, considers the OB-centric booking policies to be one of the event’s highlights. “I live three blocks from where we played and to be out on my own street playing for all of our close friends and fans is such a great experience,” Ott said. play for all ages. “More people can see us than usual,” Ott said. “Lots of parents say they’re glad, because they can bring their kids who love Led Zeppelin. We’re really stoked at how the youth of today continues to stay interested in Zep.” Ocean Beach acoustic-rocker John Miller (1 p.m. at the Artists’ Alley stage), who performs with his group the Payback, is a three-year veteran of the street fair. Miller’s 2010 appearance will be his farewell performance, however, because of a relocation out of state. “This event is the culmination of some of my favorite things: Ocean Beach, rock ’n’ roll, good friends and good times,” Miller said. “Ocean Beach is the perfect setting with the perfect backdrop. A summer Saturday at the beach where the air
is filled with the sounds of various music styles and smells of delicious food.” While some bands will be playing all covers, Miller takes the opposite view. “We really don’t change our set that much for this type of gig, but we won’t play one of our usual cover tunes,” Miller said. “When we get the opportunity to play to such a large group of people, we want to play our original music so those who haven’t heard us before get an opportunity to hear what we’re about.” While Miller is saddened to be playing his final local gig, he said he’s happy the appearance will be at the Ocean Beach Street Fair. “It’s fitting that I get to say goodbye to the community that I landed in seven years ago, at the event that, for me, defines Ocean Beach,” Miller said.

Make it a point to check out The Beacon booth! As long as you’re visiting the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival, come by and check out The Peninsula Beacon’s booth and say hello! This is the time of year we set up shop along Newport Avenue and host our very popular annual Amateur Photo Contest. Swing by and vote for your favorite. The top-three winning photos will be published in The Peninsula Beacon, so your vote counts! First prize this year is a $100 gift certificate to Nick’s at the Beach. All of the photos were taken in the Ocean Beach, Shelter Island, Point Loma, La Portal and Sports Arena/ Midway area by local residents. It’s also your chance to share thoughts and comments with the Beacon staff. “The OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival is one of those rare opportunities we have to really mingle with readers informally one-on-one in the heart of Ocean
Beach,” said Beacon editor Kevin McKay. “We love the feedback. It’s really important to us in our effort to be a mirror of this community. Our whole mission is to focus on those stories and tidbits readers can’t get anywhere else. So, as you mosey on down Newport Avenue, drop by and tell us what you think!” Feel free to pick up a copy of this special street fair edition of The Beacon to help you navigate your way around the festival and find all those cool things that make this such a great event. And grab a copy of our annual Visitor Guide that gives you complete listings of community activities and attractions throughout the year. The booth number is 110, located in the 4900 block of Newport Avenue.
Ocean Beach Skate Shop shows off new location The Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Shop will once again thrill the crowd with Skate Jam during the OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival on June 26. The skate demonstration will take place in the store’s new parking lot at 4976 Newport Ave., next to Starbucks. Events will take place throughout the day, and include some brave individuals skating on a mini-ramp. “It’s about a 4-foot half-pipe,” said Lanette Jorgensen, the shop’s general manager. Street fairgoers are encouraged to check out the itinerary to see when the miniramp will be open to the public or watch the professionals in action. Professionals and amateurs alike will awe the crowd with their tricks, mad skills and courage. There will be a street course set up as well.
Skating contests will take place and the categories will be divided by ages. There will also be a “best trick” competition. It’s not all about skating, though. Another popular activity at Skate Jam is attempting to stay on top of the Indo Board Balance Trainer. “It’s fun for people to try,” Jorgensen said. All ages and abilities are encouraged to try this balancing act. It consists of a board placed over a cylindrical base. The goal is to ride the board as long as you can without letting it touch the ground. It is great for the body core and balancing, Jorgensen added. The Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Shop uses Indo Boards in its surf camps and clinics. Skate Jam will also include a DJ playing music, along with raffles and vendors.

Young at Art, a nonprofit children’s art education center at the corner of Newport Avenue and Cable Street, will have a double booth offering interactive art activities for children. Artists’ Alley is located on Cable Street between Niagara Street and Santa Monica Avenue. To check out the blog, visit www.oceanbeachartistsalley.blogspot.com. But Artist’s Alley isn’t the only outlet for creative-minded folks in Ocean Beach. In 1999, Ocean Beach artist Rich James started a community mural project as a way to inject pride into the community and to beautify the area.
James designed mosaic squares that OB Street Fair attendees would then paint. Afterward, James and his friends would install the pieces on the outside wall of a chosen business. While James passed away one month before 2008 street fair, the legacy and tradition lives on today with artist Janis Ambrosiani. This year, street fairgoers will be painting mosaics that will be displayed on the side wall of US Bank at 4827 Newport Ave. The murals are vivid and give members of the community a chance to leave their own mark on the seaside neighborhood.

Some participants include Somba Art, which will sell paintings, along with La Chil Boutique, displaying handmade jewelry. As usual, unique vendors will fill Newport Avenue with all variety of gifts and goods. Knox said there are a handful of new vendors this year. “It never ceases to amaze me how many vendors have these little businesses,” Knox said. Other highlights of the fair are five stages of music, including a 92107 stage dedicated to OB musicians, a skateboard demonstration from Ocean Beach Skate and Surf Shop, a Wonderland children’s area, a community mural project and a raffle to help pay for the Fourth of July community fireworks show off the Ocean Beach Pier. The 21-and-up crowd will get a chance to quench thirsts at the Beachside Beer Garden and at Liquorland near
the main stage. “There aren’t very many events where the main stage has a backdrop of the ocean,” Knox said. “It’s really fun to be in the beer garden, watching the stage and seeing the waves and the pier.” To accommodate the crowds along Newport Avenue during the street fair, a fourth trolley has been added this year. “If you’re from outside Ocean Beach or live in north Ocean Beach, definitely take the trolley,” Knox said. “Save your feet so you can walk the whole fair.” Four trolleys will run continuously from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., picking up every half hour at two locations: the Sunrunner Lot on the corner of Pacific Highway and SeaWorld Drive, and at the entrance to Robb Field on the corner of West Point Loma Boulevard and Bacon Street. The trolleys will stop at Santa Monica Avenue and Cable Street.
