The best-of-the-best in the Peninsula, Old Town When it comes to top-shelf offerings in retail, restaurants and services, the Peninsula area and Old Town San Diego help you reach just a little higher. From the serenity of Shelter Island to the pristine beauty of Point Loma and from the magic of the Midway District to the rich, historic vibe of Old Town and the impressive shopping and cultural diversity of Liberty Station, the choices are practically endless. Perhaps you’re seeking out a quiet spot for a sunset margarita where you can observe the passing boats in peace as the setting sun eases into the horizon. Or maybe you’re on the hunt for cool museums and new educational opportunities for the family and kids. Perhaps you just need some flashy new sunglasses or some down time with a long, relaxing massage. Point Loma, with its iconic peninsula finger dipping into the Pacific, is home to a wealth of fabulous homespun eateries, fine-dining establishments, services of every kind, food sources offering healthful products and values, and sumptuous wine bars to cap off a relaxing evening together. Liberty Station, once the site of the sprawling, venerable Naval Training Center, is fast becoming San Diego’s hottest mecca for arts, entertainment, culture, science and shopping, packing an extensive array of shops, markets and restaurants all into a single community. Nearby Shelter Island, with its incredible bay views and stunning downtown panoramas, boasts some of the finest and most beautiful waterside hotels and restaurants in San Diego, along with cottage shops offering up cool maritime merchandise and knickknacks. Over at the Midway District, you’ll discover everything from mechanic needs to mouth-watering barbeque offerings, cozy cafés with themes you won’t find elsewhere in San Diego, sporting-goods and home-improvement outlets and all forms of entertainment opportunities.

Old Town San Diego, considered the birthplace of California with its roots tracing back to the first European settlements on the West Coast, is packed with historic museums, artifacts, stunning Spanish architecture and enough picturesque shops and restaurants to keep you and the family busy all day. One thing is clear: no matter what you’re looking for in each of these Peninsula areas or Old Town San Diego, there are a host of merchants here who treat you like a king or queen — whether its fixing that aching tooth, putting the finishing touches on your tax return or helping you find just the right bouquet of flowers to say, “I’m thinking of you.” But how in the world do you narrow your selections with so much to choose from? Well, that’s where The Peninsula Beacon can make things a little easier for you. Here, we present the latest edition of the 2012 Readers Choice Awards — the best-of-thebest in retail, restaurants and services for the Peninsula area and Old Town San Diego. The merchants in these bustling areas are dedicated to winning your business — and more importantly, to keeping it. The awards served up in the following pages were chosen by our loyal readership, which we value so highly. Some of the winners may already be your favorites. Others you might not be familiar with. But now you have the consensus of fellow readers to help you decide where to do your shopping, dining and take your daily business. Take a look inside, and keep watch for another round of Readers Choice Awards in retail and services in Ocean Beach this September!

The bakery-cafe offers more than 20 flavors of handmade artisan bread, decadent morning pastries, inventive sandwiches, coffee and espresso drinks. Slater’s 50/50

Yummy Buffet

There’s no escaping the Hawaiian theme at this longtime San Diego fixture, it’s everywhere from the menu to the décor. Hawaiian nachos, macadamia nut chicken, haole halibut and about a million more choices. The 50th state rules here by virtue of its cuisine, and its tiny place on the map be hanged. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s accouterments are ever-changing in deference to tiki art, or Polynesian carvings of human forms. And the fact that the building sits smack on the water only enhances the flow of things. Mahalo – and enjoy!

Slater’s might be known for its “Burgers by Design”, but it’s the restaurant’s tap list that has made it a favorite of San Diegans. With more than 100 beers on tap, from Abita Purple Haze to Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, and all the alphabet letters in between, there’s a beer for every glass. Best-paired with Slater’s beers is the “50/50” burger, but don’t let its menu curtail your selection, you can create a burger with your own mish-mosh of toppings to pair it perfectly with your brew.

An evening at Yummy Buffet is always enjoyable. The buffet features a fantastic variety of freshly prepared Asian and American cuisine. Yummy has everything from fresh handmade spring rolls and eggdrop soup to ribs and mashed potatoes. It even has a large selection of freshly rolled sushi. The fair price and casual, inviting environment makes you want to stay for more and more helpings.

Best BBQ Phil’s BBQ For the past 10 years, BBQ lovers across San Diego County have turned to restaurateur Phil Pace to satisfy a singular craving: mesquitegrilled babyback and beef ribs, chicken and sandwiches. Serving thousands of customers a day, Phil has built his foundation on consistency, quality, freshness and friendly service. Long lines of anticipation, an energetic, friendly atmosphere, fantastic food, huge portions and many, paper towels make Phil’s the go-to BBQ house of choice.

Best Breakfast Red Sails Inn

The Red Sails Inn wine list includes three Merlots, which tells you something. Just as Merlot is the wine for any occasion, so too is the eatery’s talent for pleasing all the people all the time, whether it’s wine with dinner or coffee with breakfast. While mom and dad are chowing down on crab benedict and omelettes, the little ones have a menu of their own, which includes the universal favorite hot cakes. Red Sails Inn is in its 55th year now, which means they have had time to get it all right – and they certainly have.

It Began with an Idea. . . Point Loma Seafoods first opened its doors to the public back in 1963. Kelly Christianson and his wife Marie began selling fish out of a small store with one small display case. Kelly set exacting standards of quality and freshness, so much so, that only the finest catches were kept for sale. In time, along with their sons Jack and John, Kelly and Marie slowly built Point Loma Seafoods' reputation as more than just a fresh fish market. Soon they began smoking and processing both sport-caught fish and fish for retail sales.

Behind the list of that week’s wines are wine barrels framing the bar. Apart from the bar seating, which fills up rapidly, are our woodtopped wine barrels surrounded by comfortable couches and chairs.

Best Bay View Bali Hai Restuarant There’s no escaping the Hawaiian theme at this longtime San Diego fixture, it’s everywhere from the menu to the décor. Hawaiian nachos, macadamia nut chicken, haole halibut and about a million more choices. The 50th state rules here by virtue of its cuisine, and its tiny place on the map be hanged. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s accouterments are everchanging in deference to tiki art, or Polynesian carvings of human forms. And the fact that the building sits smack on the water only enhances the flow of things. Mahalo – and enjoy!

Best Breakfast Red Sails Inn Restaurant 2614 Shelter Island Drive, Point Loma (619) 223-3030 www.theredsails.com

Red Sails Inn The Red Sails wine list includes three Merlots, which tells you something. Just as Merlot is the wine for any occasion, so too is the eatery’s talent for pleasing all the people all the time, whether it’s wine with dinner or coffee with breakfast. While mom and dad are chowing down on crab benedict and omelettes, the little ones have a menu of their own, which includes the universal favorite, hot cakes. Red Sails is in its 55th year now, which means it’s had time to get it all right – and it certainly has.

THANK YOU FOR VOTING US BEST PIZZA

Owners Maria and Patrick Brinson decided to open up a place for feline and avian companions, because they noticed that the level of service for dogs has grown, while cats and birds have been left behind. For pet owners that may not want a sitter coming into their home or may want their animal companions to have more than one or two short visits a day. They felt they could not only offer more then what is currently available but also raise the level of care for cats and birds when staying away from home.
