NEWS ‘Downtown U.S.A.’ shines light on homeless

DECEMBER 2009 SAN DIEGO DOWNTOWN NEWS

BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | DOWNTOWN NEWS

In 1991, Susan Madden Lankford rented the old Seaport Village Jail to photograph a fashion piece because “she liked the light.” Her project soon attracted the curiosity of homeless people who broke into the former jail to sleep at night. Her curiosity evolved into an 18-year journey to capture the lives of San Diego’s street people in photos and interviews, which she gradually unravels in her latest book, “Downtown U.S.A: A Personal Journey with the Homeless.” Lankford uses her camera, shooting in black-and-white, to zero in on the expression, emotion and character of the homeless she interviews and, more often than not, befriends. Lankford does not stray from the personal lives and daily happenings of the people in her book to preach about their plight or lament their ills. Instead, she introduces the reader to the oft ignored and feared homeless person who has a narrative far greater than simply about resting her head on a sidewalk, shelter bed or parkland at night. Everyone has a story to tell whether he is homeless or not; people who live on the street are no different in this regard, said Michael, whom the book spotlights through two decades of struggling

Michael, a man who once provided photographer and author Susan Lankford notes about his life, has now held a steady job for the past 10 years. Photo by Susan Lankford

with drugs and sleeping on the street. Lankford first pursued Michael to interview after seeing him hurry past her Fifth Avenue work studio pushing a cart of s t o l e n copper. Michael b e g a n handing Lankford writings about his life for a small payment. “Michael continued to intrigue me,” Lankford wrote. “He didn’t seem to have a real reason to be on the streets, other than the drugs. He wasn’t lazy. He wasn’t stupid. He was actually pretty damn smart. I’d always feel surprised when I got back to the loft and opened up the crumpled pieces of paper he’d shoved in my direction.” Michael spoke at a Dec. 1 consortium of downtown stakeholders

– politicians, business people, residents, experts – to discuss issues surrounding the homeless. Lankford sponsored the discussion through her Susan Lankford social project, Humane Exposures. “It’s a good thing to bring things to light so we can deal with them,” said Michael, who has now held a steady job for the past 10 years. Spending time with the homeless led Lankford on a journey to portray the lives of mothers in the San Diego women’s detention center in Lankford’s first book, “Maggots in My Sweet Potatoes.” Lankford is now working on another exposure about incarcerated juveniles.

With a degree in interior design and seven years of experience working with clients to update or freshen their homes, Sandy experiences added pleasure in remodeling her new interior surroundings. “I began with the focal point —

the view exposed by the floor to ceiling windows,” she said. Sandy had perfectly matched the intensity of the alluring San Diego Bay with the textural color pallet of rich dark chocolate, mocha and sand. To add contrast, she blended the darks with a multitude of light sources from fixtures, candles and mirrors. She has already decorated for the Christmas holidays.

“I couldn’t wait,” she said. “Decorating is all about setting the mood by satisfying the senses.” The corner window was the perfect placement for the tree, and surprisingly, it was not real. “Growing up in Oregon, each year we would drive to a nearby tree farm and chopped down a tall fresh tree,” Sandy explained. “Living in Southern California, it makes more sense to have a smaller, more compact artificial one. I supplement the tree by placing fresh pine boughs and flowers on the table and counters, framing the mirrors with garlands, hanging holly wreaths and mistletoe to bring the smell of the forest indoors. I also light dozens of scented candles.” Sandy turned on the lights and the effect was awesome. The triple-pane windows created a multiplying effect with the light reflections shining in the glass. The shiny crystal ornaments and red balls sparkled. “When our daughter was younger, she decided we needed a tree-decorating theme,” Sandy said. “She chose musical ornaments; my husband, hummingbirds; and I picked angels. We use these ornaments year after year.” Sandy then described her family’s typical Christmas routine. “For us, Christmas is about sharing quality time with family, so we keep it simple,” she said. “We are joined on Christmas Eve by our daughter Ashley and son-in-law Russ. Following dinner, we sip hot chocolate and share a delicious dessert. We each open one present. “On Christmas morning, we cook a big brunch. Afterwards, the four of us take a long walk with our two dogs. Then we open presents. That evening, we go to a newly released holiday-themed movie.”

Sandy Newton keeps her home festive with an array of fresh pine boughs, flowers, holly wreaths, garlands, scented candles and mistletoe. Below, she arranged DON BALCH | Dwontown News candles to stair-step their way upward along a wall.

With a broad grin, she said, “Next year will be different. We are looking forward to our first grand baby.” Just then, Chaz trotted into the room on all four legs. Sandy immediately cupped her hands around his face and relayed his story. “Mid-December last year, James asked what I wanted for Christmas,” she said. “My immediate response was a puppy. Not an easy gift to find on such short notice. Days before Christmas, James was flying home and the woman sitting in the seat in front of him had a Cavapoo puppy for sale. He is the best Christmas present I ever received.”

San Diego City College German Club pays homage to fall of the Berlin Wall BY ANTHONY GENTILE | DOWNTOWN NEWS

Members of the German Club at San Diego City College shared their take on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall last month. The club built an 8foot by 8-foot replica of the wall in Schwartz Square on the downtown campus. “We really wanted to give the City (College) campus and the community the political and historical message that the Berlin Wall falling gave 20 years ago,” said City College German Club President Jessica Hays. “We want to keep that message alive and let people remember.” Hays said the idea for the wall came from the club’s faculty advisor, Astrid Ronka. It took a nine-hour day to construct the replica wall, with help from theater department faculty member Duane Gardella, who donated

supplies and provided input on the design. The replica was divided into two parts, representing the East and West German perspectives. On the East German side, a fence topped with barbed wire stood in front of the wall. The wall itself was gray and cracked. Two holes were painted in the wall, revealing flowers and a scenic countryside. “That really gives you that cold, ‘You can’t come that close to the wall’ type of feeling,” Hays said. “We tried to be as symbolic as possible with that piece.” On the other side, the wall was fashioned as a mural, with split images depicting a colorful woman

and an image of peace. This represented the West German side of the wall, which historically featured varying degrees of artistic expression. The wall also had 26 slips of paper with facts, quotes and stories about the Berlin Wall peppered around both sides. Hays said that most of her fellow classmates did not know much about the history of the Berlin Wall. “We wanted people to get the whole gist of what happened to take time to really read,” Hays said. “We thought that would be the best way to grab people’s attention versus just putting up a whole story. We just wanted people to know what it is and have some information about it.”

LIFE IN THE CITY

Lack of urgency on downtown stadium study could force a turnover

By SANDRA SIMMONS

The holiday season is filled with images and adages exemplifying chilly wintry nights and welcoming cozy dwellings. Snowflakes falling from the sky, fir tree boughs weighed by snow, bridges intersecting iced over rivers, horse drawn sleds with riders wrapped in woolen blankets, and Jack Frost nipping at noses. This end of the year imagery is fitting if you live in the most northern of the Northern Hemisphere. Here in San Diego, not so much. The sky is pure and surprisingly tepid. The lower angle of the sun sends a warm golden light creating a surreal landscape quality. Our holiday season brings yet another sunny day in paradise. With so many downtowners transplanted from other parts of the region or distant states, I couldn’t help but wonder if halls were being decked with boughs of holly. Do empty nesters still take the time to decorate as they once did when their children were young? Do the newest occupants bring along former traditions or start anew? So, I asked, “Is the holiday season an act of folly or a time to be jolly?” It seems the holidays are a time of celebration with family and friends for many downtowners. My former neighbors Don, Cheryl, Logan and Landon Moore (The Brickyard) recently relocated from their two-bedroom flat to a large rowhome. And, there’s extra room to place lights and

holiday decorations. As Santa no longer has a key to the lobby door, Logan and Landon are looking forward to leaving cookies by the fireplace for Santa to find when he slides down the chimney. Richard Walker (Pinnacle) is a self-proclaimed “die hard Christmas person.” Even though he frequently travels for Christmas, holiday decorations and adorned trees are set in place both at his home and business the weekend before Thanksgiving and remain through the first week in January. His holiday season is a time to be thankful and jolly. As a single guy, Chris Bott (LaVita) strings white lights on the balcony and a couple of strands of red chili pepper lights in the living room. Traditional, he and his two daughters travel to his parent’s home in Tucson to celebrate the holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving, where they enjoy decorating the family home. For Barbara and Howard Sachs (Park Row), the holiday brings Chanukah, the festival of lights, a time of joy, a time of warmth, a time to share. They have loving memories of glowing menorah candles, the smell of potato latkes frying, but most of all the time spent with loving family members. May your decked halls be filled with love and laughter. May your season be jolly! Viva-city fostering a vibrant,

When it comes to planning out one’s day, list making is a regular habit for most. The action of simply jotting down the week’s grocery list or leaving a thoughtful set of “honey do’s” is common practice. Therefore, it’s easy to accept the notion that list-making and daily planning of the most mundane events is a part of our everyday lives. So, why is it with all this earmarking and bulletpointing, that the concept of personal goal setting is not daily practice in our society? Despite how important-and easy-it is, very few people write down their goals. Without goals many people find themselves sitting stagnant and without direction. Fortunately for our society, a noteworthy and exceptional listmaking time is upon us — New Year’s; the new decade, 2010, full of promise and possibility. So why not add to those “honey do’s” and pile on a new aisle of needs and wants for yourself and

your family? Why not create personal goals this year? Why not, put them in writing? Because so few of us ever actually write our goals on paper, or apply the goal setting process properly, many of us fail in our resolutions. This is hard to accept, as all studies show one thing: the most important result generated from goal setting research is that it clearly and consistently facilitates performance. You have to simply transpose your vision to something practicable to make it effectual. Hence the list. Put it to action! As Henry David Thoreau was able to note 150 years ago, “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.” Now, 150 years later, sports psychologists and industrial organizational psychologists have recognized the exact same thing: goal setting when done properly, works. I don’t ever remember taking a goal setting course in high school or college. Maybe it is because

nervous. The prospect of an unknown future for the area may cause anxiety among property owners who may have difficulty leasing space, developers who may need to put pending projects on hold, and business owners that may face a myriad of unknowns, all of which would have a negative financial impact on the San Diego region. Reviewing the project in a timely manner will tell whether the benefits of a downtown stadium outweigh the risks. While a downtown football stadium could have a long-lasting positive impact on the East Village and the San Diego region, in the short term we need to focus on analyzing the financial possibilities of building on this site with an exceptional sense of urgency. The speed with which we conduct this study can have a significant impact on the businesses and residents of East Village and may very well determine San Diego’s ability to remain a viable home for the Chargers. Building a new San Diego Chargers stadium downtown could bring immense economic and civic opportunity to the East Village and the entire San Diego region. With this and the region’s best interests in mind, including keeping the Chargers here in San Diego, we must determine the financial viability of this site quickly. The financial viability study, which was recently approved by Centre City Development Corp. using money from its general fund, is a four to six month process that will help the city determine the financial ramifications of placing the stadium in the current bus yard for the Metropolitan Transit System, located East of Petco Park. The biggest hurdle for the potential stadium is how to finance the approximately $1 billion project, which further underscores the importance of expediting this financial review. Community leaders, including the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, are excited about the prospect of a new stadium in one of our most prominent redevelopment areas. Turning the

Metropolitan Transit System’s bus yard into a state-of-the-art stadium would be an effective catalyst to bolster redevelopment in East Village, but we must act quickly to ensure this feasibility. Dragging our feet on the opportunity to move Ruben Barrales the Chargers to the East Village will only open the window for municipalities outside of our region to throw their hat in the ring and woo the Chargers to other locations. Having a hometown NFL team can generate hundreds of millions of dollars per year for the local economy, and in order for San Diego to remain in the running, we must expedite this financial viability study as quickly as possible. While these possibilities are met with excitement by many of San Diego’s community leaders, the uncertainty of the proposed location is leaving many East Village property owners and residents

Don’t forget about Fourth Avenue, the Gaslamp’s ‘more mature’ western boundary

Photos by DON BALCH

BY MARTIN JONES WESTLIN | DOWNTOWN NEWS

Downtown’s Fourth Avenue changes its skin at the drop of a hat depending on the hour. Nothing sexy there, as the Gaslamp Quarter’s western boundary is caught up in the area’s bustle as surely as Fifth and Sixth, which are clearly

in the thick of things. There’s a schizoid flavor about it all on the latter two thoroughfares — the light of day persists in tracking the whereabouts of button-down shoppers and businessmen, many of whom then duck into hip, iconic watering holes and lose total control under cover of darkness.

Fourth Avenue itself, however, is more settled than all that. The majestic Balboa Theatre, reopened in 2008 as the last of the Horton Plaza projects after a retrofit and a 20-year hiatus, sets a lot of the tone for today’s Fourth. It’s vibrant in the classical sense, its newest and prospective establishments

leaving the cool factor to the others. “Fourth Avenue is kind of an informal theater district,” explained Brad Richter, Centre City Development Corporation’s assistant vice president of current planning. “Fifth Avenue is concentrated more toward the nightclubs, and

then on Fourth and immediately west, you have the more mature crowd, for lack of a better term. It’s more of a destination, with the theaters like the Balboa and the Lyceum and the (nearby) Civic there.” Indeed, amid prospects for a new federal building and state court center in the area to the west, the ubiquitous condos springing up to the west and north, and even a new streetlights plan that touches on the thoroughfare, Fourth remains relatively untouched. The only major construction agenda around Fourth, Richter said, is the northerly Lower Cortez Hill area. That’s the site of a new neighborhood park, just south of St. Joseph’s Cathedral. “There will be a lot of mixed-use developments around there,” Richter said, “primarily residential.” In all its basic intactness, Fourth Avenue’s major monument to urban blight remains the California Theater, in the avenue’s 1100 block. Slated for demolition in 1990, the place is a doddering, caliginous mess, now the property of a financial company that’s working with the city to evaluate the building’s structural integrity. “A lot of people have looked at that block, including the owners of the 4th & B concert venue,” Richter said. “Hopefully, somebody will be able to put together a development plan that involves the whole block.” Meanwhile, Fourth Avenue remains set in its ways, a stubborn alternative to the Gaslamp’s traditional flash and dash. “The Gaslamp Quarter is known as a bustling dining destination, and we are glad to be a part of it, and bring something different to the table,” Bice general partner Trevor Sacco said. The “different” part is in the ambience — a quiet, genteel, unadorned setting rich in the sedateness that any viable theater district, and indeed Fourth itself, exudes.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve with live music BY BART MENDOZA | DOWNTOWN NEWS

Without a doubt, there is no bigger night on the annual entertainment calendar than New Year’s Eve. As we approach 2010, just about any place with a dance floor will offer those in a celebratory mood the chance to take in some music as the clock winds down. With so many options at hand, we’ve whittled down the list to come up with five of the standout end-of-the-year parties taking place downtown this year. All events are for those over 21 only. The Giant Hands down the biggest event happening in the city is the appropriately named Big Night Out, taking place at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. With 12 themed party areas, 10 bands and DJs, there will be something for just about everybody. While all the bands had not been confirmed at press time, the three listed so far are certainly among the city’s top party bands and cover a wide range of styles; R&B powerhouses Lady Dottie & The Diamonds, retro dance kings the Disco Pimps and jazz favorites the Craig Stephenson Trio. DJs will include Mike Czech, Edgartronic, Scotty Boy and Happee. Big Night Out at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront: $149-$219. bignightsandiego.com Large Scale Happenings Though known for it’s connection to live music, if a DJ only event is your thing, one of the biggest this year will be at The Hard Rock Hotel. The party encompasses the whole venue, including three floors, four venues and 12 DJs. On hand will be Paulie P., Danny Love, Sid Viscious, Kurch and Card 1. While the DJs are the draw at this party, the option of four distinct venues in one is appealing, particularly, rooftop nightspot Woodstock. New Years Eve 2010 at The Hard Rock Café: $60. hardrock hotelsd.com The San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina will also host a DJ party with Scooter & LaVelle as well as Hyper Crush. Spinning a mix of house, electronica and hip-hop, Scooter & Lavelle are among the most popular of San Diego’s turntablists. Extras on the night include a Nintendo Lobby Lounge and live body painting, but the 3,000 capacity dance floor is the star attraction here. The Shen Yun dance company takes its audience on a magnificent journey of Chinese folklore complete with music, dance and colorful costumes. The group will perform seven shows from Dec. 26 to 31 at the San Diego Civic Theatre.

Shen Yun brings colorful, cultural experience BY RACHEL CURTIS | DOWNTOWN NEWS

The globally-acclaimed Chinese dance company Shen Yun arrives at San Diego’s Civic Theatre this month to kick off the California portion of its 2010 world tour. Since 2007, the multi-million dollar production has grown from a single dance group to three dance groups and three orchestras that will reach 130 cities this season. The 2½-hour performance, including one 15-minute intermission, is composed of about 20 scenes from traditional Chinese folklore spanning the nation’s 5,000 year history. Emcees’ introductions help audiences orient themselves within the great tapestry of China’s past, just as the plethora of painstaking and historically accurate details found in the grand backdrops and handmade costumes securely plant viewers in distant times and places.

The rave reviews by worldrenowned choreographers, performing artists and musicians (Shen Yun boasts the first orchestra to combine both Chinese and western instruments, which play different sets of scales) reflect not only the technical prowess exhibited in the aerial, acrobatic dances, but also the sense of the divine the show imparts to viewers. Dr. Vivian Wang, event manager for the show in San Diego, explained that Shen Yun, literally Divine Performing Arts, aspires to a higher purpose. “It attempts to show how the world can be: harmonious and peaceful,” she said. It is effective: in previous years, audiences have often been moved to tears. Ironically, while Shen Yun has visited 20 countries, China is not among them. China’s communist government

has called the show “controversial,” and refused to grant the company permission to perform within its borders. Most people involved with the show believe the rebuff is due to the performers’ adherence to a belief system banned in China, Falun Gong. The dancers use the practice, which emphasizes truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, to achieve the purity of mind and body they deem necessary to portray their characters honestly. Every year, Shen Yun creates an entirely new production – from stories to musical scores to costumes. After the tour concludes in May, the artists will almost immediately transition to learning their new routines for the 2011 season. Tickets for the seven shows, taking place from Dec. 26 to 31, are available now at the box office or Ticketmaster. Prices range from $39 to $200 for a VIP package.

Local Doctor Comments on H1N1 Virus — The Benefit of Vaccination The H1N1 influenza virus or loosely called the swine flu is the latest novel virus that the medical profession has had to encounter. Not too long ago as you may remember there was the Ebola virus and the bird flu. According to a report in the November issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, there were 1088 hospitalizations for H1N1 flu just in California alone from April to August 2009, 30% were admitted to the ICU and 11% died. Nearly a third had no underlying health condition. This underlies the importance of vaccination against the H1N1 influenza. Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of a flu vaccination is not primarily to prevent infection by the influenza virus, but instead to prevent the complications resulting from having the flu, namely pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and

worsening of underlying medical conditions. Obviously, the worse complication is unfortunately death. As with all vaccines, there are individuals who are worried about vaccine safety. This is understandable, but one must ultimately remember that a person considering the flu vaccine currently is much more likely to get the H1N1 influenza viral infection and possibly suffer a serious complication, including death, then he is to get any of the potential and yet unsubstantiated complications from the influenza vaccine. Thus, a reasonable person not guided or stifled by paralyzing fears should not hesitate to get vaccinated. Dr. Calvin K. Wong can be reached at (619) 232-6262 4444 W. for the holidays, this is the place to come. (619) 435-1880 www.scottishtreasures.net Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q Sister to Village Pizzeria, Beach-n-Diner and MooTime Creamery, Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q is the fourth addition to the NadoLife family of restaurants - all located just across the bay on Coronado Island. Lil’ Piggy’s offers a “Low n’ Slow” Memphis style of BBQ, not found at your typical So Cal BBQ joint! Meats are slowly smoked for hours and hours on low temperatures with pure hickory wood for added flavor. This creates a redness in the pork and beef that’s actually a sign of good flavor penetration known as the “smoke ring”. ‘Cause if it ain’t smoked it ain’t BBQ! Although Memphis style BBQ is focused on moist pulled pork, baby back ribs, slaw, and a tangy sweet sauce, there’s plenty more to whet your appetite at Lil’ Piggy’s! Some local favorites include corn fritters - a mix of the traditional southern hush puppy and corn bread served with fresh whipped honey butter and chicken wings - which are slow smoked with a dry rub and lightly sauced before serving, never fried! The BBQ beans are not only made fresh and smoked daily, but they also have a generous amount of pulled pork mixed in resulting in a great smoky sweet flavor! Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q caters throughout the San Diego area. From pick up to full service, there are packages suitable for any occasion and budget. FASHION Golden Hanger Awards, FIDM Runway Show, Zandra’s latest Fashion Careers College presented the 23rd Annual Golden Hanger Fashion Awards Gala on Nov. 9. Pat O’Connor chaired this event along with Honorary Chair Zandra Rhodes. Sandra Maas, KUSI Channel 9 News morning anchor was mistress of ceremonies for the evening. Awards for contributions to the community were given to Pat Launer (theater critic and arts writer), Fred Sweet (founder San Diego Model Management), Sally B. Thornton (volunteer extraordinaire), and Phyllis Van Doren (senior editor San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine). The evening culminated with the students’ debut collection. Each segment was a collection created by one of the FCC students. The catwalk was an endless stream of creativity. One of my favorite sections was an innovative collection by Jeffrey Parish. The finale was a line-up of costumes inspired by the art at the Timken Museum’s “Second Annual Art of Fashion Event.” These gorgeous creations made a climactic finale. The show was coordinated by Tanya McAnear, and produced and choreographed by Jim Crawford. This event benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation of San Diego and Variety Children’s Lifeline.

He had this dilapidated mansion restored and decided to decorate that season. Every season since, it comes alive with an

extensive lighting display. Santaʼs sleigh and nine reindeer (including Rudolph) are on the roof of this mansion. Santa will be making his annual visit and will be in his sleigh on Friday, Dec. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. greeting children of all ages with candy canes and his hardy “Ho-ho-ho! Drive by any time between 5 and 10 p.m. through New Yearʼs Eve to view this holiday display located at the corner of First and Ivy – five blocks west of Balboa Park.

Carolyn's Designer Resale Former Bostonian Carolyn Lancaster has been reselling goods to San Diegans for more than a decade. She buys clothing and accessories by sought-after designers like Chanel, Escada, and Armani, and peddles the in-season, contemporary styles-all in flawless, secondhand condition-at prices that are up to 80 percent off the original. "The more expensive the item, the better the deal you can get," Lancaster says in her unmistakable accent. A $2,000 St. John suit recently sold for $350. Salazar’s Taco Shop

Breakfast • Lunch • Dinner / 6:30am - 9pm Daily 1502 Market St. / San Diego / 619-238-9674 www.salazarsfinemexicanfood.com

Salazar’s Taco Shop Began as a dream in 1945 and turned into a reality in 1972. The owner and founder, Frank Salazar, began working at the age of 14 in the kitchen of the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe under the supervision of a German chef named Konrad. Today the “taste of home” quality of the food is enjoyed by many long-time customers and some of our new neighbors who are becoming our new regulars. The fine food at Salazar’s can be enjoyed seven days a week, 6:30 am until 9 p.m. Breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as food to go are served all day. Bulk food orders with advance notice are available. The margaritas are real and the bottled beer is cold. The best thing I’ve ever been told by a customer is that “there’s a genuine-ness about this place.”

El Indio – Mexican Restaurant & Catering Since 1940, El Indio has been dedicated to delivering the finest Mexican food in the world. We are the birth place of the “Taquito” and make fresh tortillas daily. Our authentic Sonora style Mexican cuisine is made with traditional herbs and spices. Our food is prepared without preservatives or additives & is the Freshest Mexican Food In Town.
