Greetings from the La Jolla Christmas Parade Chair Welcome to the 53rd La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival, “Christmas by the Sea,” sponsored by the La Jolla Town Council. On Sunday Dec. 5 at 2 p.m., the Parade kicks off with the flyover of the Antique Aircraft Association. This year the Parade has over 125 entrants, with dozens of floats, bands, marching units, equestrians, miscellaneous and vintage vehicles – Alibaba the Camel, fire engines and the Olde Globe Theatre Grinch add to the fun. In keeping with our tradition of honoring locals who have made major contributions to the community, we have selected the lifeguards of San Diego as grand marshals. We are fortunate to have Lifeguard Chief Rick Wurts, joined by the four United States Lifeguard Association National Medal of Valor winners. Spencer Wilson, Becky Candra, the Cameron Chen Family and Jimmy Canali are being honored as traditional, education, civic and goodwill marshals, respectively. Earl “Van” Imwegen, retired
brigadier general, will serve as military marshal, accompanied by the Miramar Marine Band. Students from local schools nominated for their exceptional service to the community will join the parade to be honored as youth marshals. The Parade could not happen without our major sponsors, The Dr. Seuss Foundation, La Valencia, the County of San Diego (recommended by Pam Slater-Price), The Florence Riford Fund and the many sponsorships and donations received from local businesses and residents. It is a great day to spend in the village watching the parade assemble and travel down Girard Avenue and Prospect Street and enjoy the holiday festival at the rec center after the parade. At the festival there will be entertainment, games for the kids, and a special treat — photos with Santa. Avoid mall mania and shop our local merchants who will all be open for shopping, dining and lounging – with lots of park-
ing available, making it is easy to wander the Village enjoying our seaside ‘jewel’. Special thanks to the Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival Committee — the Parade would not be possible without their many efforts, from helping raise funds to making sure all entrants have a fun and safe experience.
