Director plans Riford revitalization BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS
Radio personality Ron Jones is known around town for his smooth voice as the emcee at the summer Concerts by the Sea and Sunday farmer’s market. Jones is now employing his persuasive tones and long standing in the community to garner support for the Riford Center on La Jolla Boulevard, which Jones aims to reinvent as a social venue for adults and shake off its image as a senior center. Jones was appointed executive director of the Riford Center in October. “The recreation center takes
care of the kids. The YMCA takes care of the families. The JCC [Jewish Community Center] takes care of the families and the kids,” Jones said. “When you get to the needs of the empty nesters, it doesn’t exist. Now it does here.” Jones wants to host weddings at the Riford in the near future. Thanks to a $150,000 donation, the Riford Center just completed a commercial kitchen to cater events and to host regular cooking classes. Dick and Kaye Woltman made the donation in memory of their mother, Dorothy Reasner. “The kitchen is the engine that
drives this place,” Jones said. “I plan to give Great News [Discount Cookware and Cooking School in Pacific Beach] a run for its money.” The ceiling on the center’s airy, main room was also renovated with the Woltman donation, as was the flooring. Patrons gather there for the “Jazzercise” workout classes held in the mornings and evenings. Jones wants to bring more nighttime activities and highprofile speakers to the center. With Jones as deejay, social dancing classes will debut on SEE RIFORD, Page 3
Black’s Beach loses winter guards BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS
Black’s Beach will no longer be patrolled by lifeguards from Labor Day through May as part of the $34 million midyear cuts made to lifeguard and fire services to help close the city’s anticipated $179 million shortfall in the 2011 general fund. Two lifeguards will continue to patrol Black’s Beach during the summer from June through Labor Day. “There are many other areas of the San Diego coastline that have been unguarded VILLAGE NEWS | DON BALCH for decades, among those A surfer’s dreamscape arrived at Black’s Beach on Dec. 28, but safety concerns have arisen with the elimination of lifeguards there during winter.

Booters follow bouncing ball to victories BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS
Several local scholastic girls soccer teams have been following the bouncing ball to victories lately. At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights under head coach Brian Quinnn came into action this week with a 10-2-1 record. Goalkeeper Devan Osegueda has seven consecutive shutouts, which is a testament to the
defense playing really well and her ability to make key saves when called upon. Defenders Jenn Akin, Zoe Merewether, Maya Theuer, Elyse Tierney and Dana Christenson have all been playing well, according to Quinn. On the attacking side, Kaylie Davidson has been in good form and Sarah Noble, Francis Harvey and Laura Aguilar starred in the “Butch Lee” Cathedral
Catholic tournament, which the Lady Knights won. Bishop’s is rated 32nd nationally in a poll conducted by ESPNrise, which tracks high school sports throughout the country. Locally, the Lady Knights are rated in the top 5 with the Division I powerhouses: Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Poway and Division II school Westview. “We are looking forward to SEE BOOTERS, Page 2

At neighboring La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings under head coach Kristin Jones won their last two games, scoring a 2-0 win over Mission Bay and a 6-2 win over Canyon Crest. “Our offense was carried by Brianna Chapman and Amanda Beary, and the defense has been becoming more and more consistent as Courtney Volger and Jessica Wood are showing great leadership,” Jones said. “After a rocky start during their tourna-
ment season, the whole team is back and ready to defend their Western League title.” At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Lady Torreys under head coach Dave Jenkins head into action this week with a mark of 3-2-1. In a 2-1 loss recently to Clairemont High, LJCD played some strong soccer despite coming back from the recent holiday break. “There was a lot of energy, great movement off the ball, a lot of communication, great touches and nice movement of the ball up and down the field, side to side,” Jenkins said. “They played most of the early part of the game in the Clairemont end of the field but couldn’t convert any of the scoring opportunities.” LJCD’s lone goal came on a

This was junior Erika Shepard’s first game after recovering from injuries sustained during her club soccer season. “She’s a great addition to the team and played very well last night,” Jenkins noted. “She started at forward, moved to outside midfield, then outside defender and finished up the game at sweeper.” According to Jenkins, Emily Eibl also played well with a lot of energy all game. “Emily started at outside mid during the first half and finished the game at forward. Sophomore Kelly Mordente, a very reliable outside defender, also had a strong game,” Jenkins added. ■
The local boys basketball season has seen a number of wins for local teams to start the year. At La Jolla High, head coach Kamal Assaf and the Vikings came into play this week at 11-5 overall (1-1 Western League). According to Assaf, the Vikings field a balanced team, playing at least nine players each game. La Jolla has been led to date by seniors Taylor Davis, Jack Latta and Max Greenberg, while junior Ryan Mills is emerging as a scorer and defender. “We are a veteran group who is finding a way to win close games this year,” Assaf said. “We are improving defensively and expect our defense to generate offensive fastbreak points during our league season. We are encouraged by the improvement of some of our players coming off the bench. In particular, Will Peterson, Mike Soumekh, Nick Sebald, Sean Devitt and Nick Reynolds are improving on the court this year and working to push the first group in practice every day.” At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, head coach Ryan Meier and the Torreys come into play this week at 9-4. “We have had a great start to the season considering the young makeup of our team,” Meier said. LJCD advanced to the finals of the Grossmont Winter Classic where it lost to third-ranked Foothills Christian, and the semis of the Max Preps

Holiday Classic, in which it lost to fifth-ranked Torrey Pines. Wins over Westview, Scripps Ranch and Saint Augustine have highlighted the team’s season to this point. “We are hoping to endure the temporary loss of our leading scorer, freshman Sage Burmeister (16.2 points per game),” Meier stated. “Sage is out with a foot injury, possibly keeping him sidelined for a couple weeks. We have had outstanding play from sophomore point guard Kai Tuites (9 ppg) and sophomore forward Frankie Bamford (10 ppg). Last year’s leading scorer Ryan Watt is just returning from a broken hand.” According to Meier, if the Torreys can get their entire team healthy and on the court together, they could be dangerous. — Editor’s note: The Bishop’s School did not respond prior to press time with information on its team. ■

Jan. 24. Alex Spinos will speak about UFOs in February. The center currently hosts classes in sculpting, drawing, Spanish, laughter yoga and senior yoga. A reading theater is in the works. Seniors continue to gather for bridge games as they have for the past 50 years. Jones is moving forward with his vision piecemeal as funds become available. The kitchen still needs pots and pans and the main room needs sound equipment. The building wraps around an open patio, accessible via sliding glass doors. Jones wants to make the patio more accessible by removing the obstructive bushes, resurfacing the uneven bricks and replacing the 60-year-old furniture. Jones is working to get the La Jolla Garden Club involved. Michael Morton of Marengo Morton Architects has designed a new façade for the building to make the center more visible and appealing to the public. In his rendering, passersby will be able to see into the building through glass doors to the courtyard. A new arched marquee will announce the name of the center, and the exterior walls will be lit up at night with energy-efficient lights. A side door will be ADA-compliant. Now, Jones just has to find the money to construct the new look. If someone makes a large enough donation, Jones is even willing to rename the center. Money is trickling in. In 2008, the center raised $150,000 at

its Rocking at the Riford event, and another is planned this May. The Kiwanis Club recently gave a $2,0000 check to the center. The San Diego Foundation contributed $4,000. Jones is banking on support from the community to keep the center alive. The Riford Endowment has been whittled down to about $50,000 since Florence Riford established the trust in 1970. Riford originally established the center as a clubhouse for persons over 50 years of age, and the center has been managed by four nonprofits since then. LiveWell was the last lessee to manage the center before the Friends of the Riford Center formed in 2007 to save the $2 million property from the wrecking ball. Jones estimates it costs $9,000 per month to operate the center, which relies on membership fees and donations, and does not receive any government
money. “I need people to get interested in the community beyond their own front mailbox,” Jones said. Jones moved to La Jolla in 1976. He built his career starting as a disc jockey and now runs Allegro Entertainment. Jones has also made a name for himself in the civic circle. He just finished a one-year stint as executive director for the La Jolla Town Council. He’s served as president of the Greater La Jolla Meals on Wheels for 10 years, and has been active in the Rotary Club for 14 years. “I’ve been called the voice of La Jolla by [Councilman] Scott Peters,” said Jones, who lives three blocks from the Riford Center. “Well, the voice of La Jolla is now at the Riford Center.” The Riford Center is located at 6811 La Jolla Blvd. For information, call (858) 459-0831.■
The owners of an 18,000-squarefoot office building at 484 Prospect St., just down the street from the Museum of Contemporary Art, want to convert the building into a 56-bed residential care facility. Trustees at the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) wanted more information before taking a vote on the project at the Jan. 7 meeting, and asked the operator to return for the February meeting. The office building originally housed nurses for the old Scripps Hospital, which has since been converted into condominiums next door at 464 Prospect St. Trustees questioned the property owner’s claims that the building’s 33 parking spaces would be sufficient for the employees, residents and visitors for the new facility. (The office building shares a parking garage with the condominiums.) Plus, trustees questioned the frequency of ambulance trips to the facility, which does not offer medical care to its residents. Only one tenant with 12 employees occupies the underutilized building, which has been on the market for several years.
In other business: Parking spots reappear Parking spaces continue to open up in La Jolla since a few active residents recognized that some curbs were no longer being used as loading zones or 15-minute parking spots. The city returned 12 parking spaces
to general parking in November on Fay and Herschel avenues, and by February plans to return another 50 parking spots to the public along Prospect Street, Coast Boulevard, Cave Street, Ivanhoe Avenue, Girard Avenue and Genter Street. “It’s an opportunity to create more parking at the cost of paint so we’re pretty excited about that,” said Joe La Cava, president of LJCPA. “It’s better than building a parking garage.” Trustees deny retaining walls Trustees voted 9-1 to deny an applicant’s request to build two retaining walls on a backyard slope that runs to the beach in the 8000 block of El Paseo Grande. The homeowner wanted to extend the deck and create a play area using the retaining walls. “The trustees’ feelings were that the retaining walls would be too bulky and too imposing for people who would use the beach recreationally,” La Cava said. Task force reviews wireless issues The city has formed a “Wireless Task Force” to review the city’s ordinances, policies and guidelines for cell towers in the city. “Nobody is very happy with the current regulations. The industry, city and residents have problems with it,” said La Cava, who will chair the task force. “This is an effort to come together to identify what each individual problem is and to see if we can come to a resolution.” SEE FACILITY, Page 5

being Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs and certain areas along Ocean Beach,” said San Diego FireRescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. “[Those beaches] are a lot more heavily populated in terms of bathers than the few-hundred-yard area of Black’s Beach.” However, lifeguard sergeant Ed Harris questioned the savings from cutting the Black’s Beach winter lifeguards, whom he believes help prevent accidents and costly rescues. Harris spoke on behalf of himself and not for Lifeguard Services. According to Harris, a person got stuck on the cliffs on Jan. 5. Following a 9-1-1 call, the police department sent its helicopter, the fire department sent its truck and helicopter and two lifeguards from La Jolla Shores responded, which meant shuffling lifeguards from other beaches to cover the Shores. “As we get closer to summer, we’ll receive more and more calls very similar to that, where we can’t determine exactly
what’s going on because we’re not up there,” Harris said. “So we’re going to have to rob resources from other districts, shuttle resources and launch helicopters. We question the overall logic of that and the true cost savings.” The winter lifeguards had been charged with patrolling the beach and preventing accidents, like warning people not to climb the rocks or swim in areas with strong rip tides, Harris said. “If we can keep them from doing something that we see is going to get them into trouble than we’ve avoided an accident and we don’t have to make a rescue,” Harris said. The city has asked state lifeguards to help respond to emergencies, but it may take up to 20 minutes for a lifeguard to respond, according to the city’s Website. “If you’re not certain of the safety of the area or your own safety, don’t go out,” Luque said. “It’s not uncommon to have unguarded beaches around San Diego. People just have to use common sense, and be safe.”■

NEWS Council pases pot regs back to committee BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS
City Council members appeared uncomfortable with the first round of recommendations to regulate dispensaries issued by the Medical Marijuana Task Force. City Council voted 7-1 to send the recommendations to subcommittee Jan. 5. The Land Use & Housing Commission (LU&H) will discuss the recommendations at its March meeting, and the Community Planners Committee, which represents the planning groups in the city, will also review the suggestions for feedback. from the Department of Development Services, which handles permits, and from the mayor’s office. Over a series of four meetings, the task force outlined suggestions for hours of operation, permitted areas of location, distance requirements from one dispensary to another and permitting processes. District 2 Councilman Kevin Faulconer expressed concerns about the task force’s recommendation that dispensaries be permitted through Process 2 and 3, wherein city staff decide on whether the dispensary can open. In those processes, the public is notified and can appeal the staff decision to the Planning Commission. Ocean Beach suggested Process 4, Faulconer said. Under a Process 4 permit, the decision to open a dispensary can be appealed before City Council. District 5 Councilman Carl DeMaio voted against sending the task force recommendations to subcommittee because he believes the process itself enables more dispensaries to open. “While some say this tightens regulations on medical marijuana, I say the opposite,” DeMaio said. “I believe it gives license; it waters down regulation; and it opens the door for more dispensaries throughout our city. I think if you follow Prop. 215 and the state attorney general’s guidelines, we certainly wouldn’t need the process before us today, and many of the existing dispensaries would not meet the test.” District 7 Councilwoman Marti Emerald reminded DeMaio of the medical marijuana users who had petitioned the council for clearer regulations to protect them from illicit dispensaries, as well as from prosecution. “We owe it to the neighborhoods where these shops are springing up, and to the integrity of the process and to the patients who want safe access,” Emerald said. ■

About 2,000 cell towers exist in the city. The proliferation of cell towers in La Jolla is the community’s main concern, La Cava said. The task force is comprised of a resident from each council district and eight people from the wireless industry. The group held its first meeting Jan. 13, at which it discussed the federal limitations on local regulation as well as the city’s current policies and regulations. “Based on regulations set forth in the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the City is not permitted to evaluate applications based on health-related concerns. Posies and Ponies seen on Girard eases stress of shopping ecalling a couple of stressful December visits at Toys-R-Us, where dodging toy-stacked shopping carts, wading by walls of toys and trikes and lingering in lines of prickly parents playing Santa, it wasn’t much better visiting the children’s department in mall stores, equally crowded and stressful. Certainly chain stores promise bargains, but I felt a longing for a quiet, unrushed visit to something like a shop run by a shopkeeper. Owner of Posies and Ponies at 7449 Girard Ave., Mara Martin was everything I wished for. She greeted me with a smile as light and bright as her children’s boutique, where the toys are vintage, old-fashioned and need no batteries. This new children’s boutique is a throwback to the kind of store that calms you down and clears your head while shopping for the perfect gift. friendly 12th annual San Diego Multicultural Festival. The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade on Harbor Drive between Market Street and Fourth Avenue. “It started as a celebration of the diversity of San Diego,” said event producer Jacki Taylor Dwyer. “It’s all about the cultural bridging that takes place when we bring a lot of people of different ethnicities together in a festival format.” The festival features numerous booths, most of which have a cultural aspect. The booths range from information and nonprofit organizations to food and other vendors. Education is a central theme of the festival, and at the educational fair area, parents and students can speak with representatives from local schools. For the third straight year, the festival will have a global village exhibit, featuring students from San Diego High’s School of Communication. For more information on the multicultural festival, visit www.ccdc.com. ■

Holiday Merriment with Purpose Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas December parties are held for lots of reasons, including bringing friends together to share some holiday cheer, facilitating networking and introductions to interesting new people, and gathering donations to help the less fortunate among us. One of the most frequent and popular benefits of these events is the accumulation of toys and other gifts for needy children — kids who might otherwise receive no gifts at all during this season of traditional giving. For more years than he cares to admit, Tom Groff — along with a group of stalwart friends (all single guys) — has hosted annual black tie Christmas galas. These parties, held for all the aforementioned reasons, have become progressively grander and more popular. This year’s venue was the Grand Del Mar, which is a very grand place indeed, and commodious enough for the 900 or so invited guests. (The Grand people say it was their biggest party to date — they even had to hire
additional valet parkers!) Tom and his fellow hosts covered all the expenses, and the guests came for free — but each was expected to bring an unwrapped gift worth $25 or more. About 1,000 gifts were collected, many of which were really quite nice! Later, Athletes for Education and the Polinsky Children’s Center took care of distributing the gifts to kids in need. Tom and company will do it all again next Christmas — but they also do Easter and Thanksgiving events with similar charity connections. La Jolla’s Athenaeum Music and Arts Library held its Members’ Holiday Party at the library itself — decorated, as usual, by Sybil Rubottom, their artist in residence, and Melissa Elliott. Girard Gourmet’s Diana and Francoise Goedhuys did their annual cookie displays, but not in just the traditional shapes — they spent considerable time to construct a replica of much of the village of La Jolla, including the Cove. Santa and his sleigh were there, but so were seals, fish, palm and evergreen trees and remarkable reproductions of the village’s most notable buildings, including the La Valencia and Colonial hotels, churches, prominent houses and even the Athenaeum itself. Signs said “Don’t Touch,” but savvy repeat guests knew that those signs would come down at a certain hour, and most of the cookies
would become available for guests to enjoy as they wished. (Not everyone could bring themselves to adhere to the one-cookie limit…) Live entertainment included pianist Sammy Tritt in the entry hall (later joined by caroling partygoers), while the Music Room was the venue for the Sue Palmer Trio and alternately the Jaeryoung Lee Jazz Piano Trio. The décor, entertainment, delicious food and plentiful libations were enjoyed by nearly 400 of the Athenaeum’s supportive members and guests.

Researchers estimate that 20 percent of elderly people living in nursing homes or assisted living experience symptoms of depression. Late in life depression can have serious repercussions. It can increase mortality and disability, may result in higher health care utilization and longer hospital stays. An estimated 15 percent of U.S. adults are providing care for seriously ill or disabled relatives. These family caregivers are simultaneously caring for their own children and also often working outside the home. Add the problem of elder depression in perhaps one in five of all family caregiving relationships and you can see the problem is huge. Many families don’t even know what they’re dealing with or how to care for their loved one when

Elderly people themselves will “ignore the blackness that descends on them” because it is hard for them to move away from the belief that depression is a sign of weakness and a result of flawed character. Also, they may think they should just handle things. That’s where the RN Case Managers at Innovative Healthcare Consultants can help. They can recognize the warning signs of depression and can help advocate for your family member with their family doctor. Winners of 11 straight and coming off a bye week, the San Diego Chargers are certainly flying high. The Bolts (13-3) host the surging New York Jets (107) in the AFC Divisional Playoffs Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium. The Jets entered the playoffs as the fifth seed, advancing to the Divisional Round by upsetting the Bengals 24-14 in Cincinnati on Saturday. Sitting out of the playoff picture a month and a half ago, the Jets won five of their last six to make the postseason. The Jets have played oldschool football all season long, riding their stout defense and league-best rushing attack. In the regular season, New York’s defense allowed the fewest total yards (252.3) and passing yards (153.7) per game. Philip Rivers and the Chargers’ fifth-ranked passing attack might have trouble finding holes in the Jets secondary. Expect Rivers to avoid Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis (seven interceptions in 2009), who will most likely line up opposite 1,000yard wideout Vincent Jackson. If the Chargers can’t exploit Jackson’s height advantage, expect Rivers to target receiver Malcom Floyd and tight end Antonio Gates. The Bolts offense finished the regular season ranked 31st in rushing, but with Rivers having a career year, they might not need to run to win. Defensively, Shawne Merriman and company are charged with stopping the Jets’ twoheaded rushing attack of Shonn Green and Thomas Jones, who combined for 169 yards and two

touchdowns on 36 carries against the Bengals. The Chargers defense has struggled against the run this year, allowing 117.8 rushing yards per game. The Jets will run to take pressure off rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has been at his best this season when not tasked with making big plays. Sanchez played an effective game against Cincinnati (12-for15, 182 yards, 1 TD) but his 20 interceptions this season suggest that a big play could be out there for Antonio Cromartie or Quentin Jammer if Sanchez is pressured Sunday. The first score will be especially important in Sunday’s game. If the Chargers can get out to an early lead, it will force the mistake-prone Sanchez and the Jets out of their comfort zone. But if the game is close or the Jets have an early advantage, it could be a low-scoring slugfest that stats suggest would not favor the Chargers. SEE PLAYOFFS, Page 12

Papa pipefish protects and purloins young BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD
Does father know best? Pipefish embryos may choose to remain mum on the subject lest they mysteriously disappear. But before passing judgment on this piscine’s parenting skills, here’s a short introduction to the critter in question. A cousin of the seahorse, the pipefish may lack a curvaceous aesthetic but shares other physical attributes and behaviors. Various habitats within the La Jolla Ecological Reserve are home to two common species of pipefish, the moniker a reflection of the fish’s cylindrical contour. The bay pipefish (Syngnathus
leptorhynchus) is wiry and delicate and about as long as a No. 2 pencil but half its circumference; the kelp pipefish (Syngnathus californiensis), a brawnier version, is easily twice a pencil’s circumference and may be a couple of feet long. Otherwise, both species appear cut from the same cloth, such as by employing the same deceits — a cryptic silhouette and varying coloration — to foil predators and divers. It takes patience, luck and a keen
eye to separate background foliage from the bladelike animal variously hued brown, yellow or green, formatted as a solid or pattern, and maybe accented with black or white. In terms of structure, a pipefish forgoes scales for jointed, bonelike rings that encircle the body down to the tail, which is tiny and fan shaped. Like Jack Sprat, it seems the nearly skeletal and toothless pipefish can eat no fat. Though unable to chew or tear prey, it instead uses its tubular mouth like a vacuum. By positioning its snout within intimate distance of tiny crustacean prey, a pipefish SEE PIPEFISH, Page 12

WHAT LIES BENEATH PIPEFISH CONTINUED FROM Page 9
Hoovers up a meal. When it comes to reproducing, female pipefish court the males. If they find chemistry together, she deposits a clutch of 100 to 200 eggs in a brood pouch on the male’s underside. A protective tissue then forms over the pouch opening to seal in the eggs. During the couple of weeks or so until hatching, the male supplies aeration and nutrients to the developing embryos not unlike that of a female placenta. But here’s where the daddy dearest part enters the equation. Recent research shows that while fathers are caretakers to most of their young, they are cannibals to some of the brood. Don’t tell mom. In other words, pops simultaneously provides for his young and siphons off some for his own needs. True, there are benefits to making sure he’s hale but don’t expect a high-five from most females. For instance, a female octopus makes the ultimate sacrifice, starving to death, while watching over her entire brood until hatching. No snacking there. Taking the long view from a human perspective, pipefish are aware before they hatch that there are no safe havens in this world. However, there is an upside. PLAYOFFS CONTINUED FROM Page 9
Chargers fans are hoping Sunday’s game does not turn out like the 2004 Wild Card meeting between the two teams. The Jets
came into Qualcomm Stadium and knocked off the Bolts 20-17 in overtime in the only previous playoff game between the old AFL clubs. The winner of the Chargers-Jets game will face the winner of Saturday’s game between the Indi-
anapolis Colts (14-2) and the Baltimore Ravens (9-7) in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 24. In the NFC, New Orleans (13-3) hosts Arizona (11-6) on Saturday and Minnesota (12-4) hosts Dallas (12-5) on Sunday. The Super Bowl will be held Feb. 7 in Miami. ■

K9 PHYSICAL THERAPY/REHAB CUTTING EDGE K9 REHAB http://www.cutting edgek9.com Cutting Edge K9 Rehab Has Been Featured On Local And National News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. Our rehab services offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion (ROM) and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temperature • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces postexercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802 SALMON PAWS-PREMIUM PET TREATS Buy online 100% pure Alaskan wild salmon treats for dogs and cats at www. salmonpaws.com. 2-year-old male Doxie/Chihuahua mix. He is 8 lbs, neutered, micro chipped, and has all his shots. Jet is completely housebroken, gets along very well with other dogs, is obedient, friendly, and pretty quiet. Jet would probably do best in a home with older children or adults. He is a little timid at first but warms up quickly. Jet would love a home where someone was home with him much of the day instead of being left alone.
