hen Dan Tarnoveanu was awarded the challenge of restoring the exterior mosaic on the west-facing wall of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in June, he knew it would be a demanding job. The entire mosaic was covered with a layer of soot and dust and had suffered deterioration from the elements, as well as having undergone what Tarnoveanu called “inappropriate past repairs.” Cracks and large gaps between tiles were visible where the tesserae (mosaic tiles) had been hastily arranged in a haphazard manner. Worst of all, the mortar originally used to adhere the tiles to the wall was a pure Portland cement — not the special modified lime mortar traditionally used in Roman and Byzantine mosaics. Tarnoveanu soon discovered the task would prove more difficult than he had anticipated. Upon closer inspection, he realized the Portland cement, which crumbles over time, had attributed to the deterioration (“The old tiles were crumbling because of the type of cement used and the exposure to the sea air,” he said) and that large portions of the mosaic “puzzle” hadn’t been arranged correctly — meaning the restoration, if it was to be done correctly, would require a lot of attention to minute detail. “The amount of disintegrated tesserae was almost double than predicted through visual investigation and photo documentation,” he said. “Plus, the gaps between the parts of the mural that were not put together correctly were larger and much more numerous than anticipated.” The mosaic was erected in 1962, a replica of the original fresco titled “Our Lady, Star of the Sea” by prominent Mexican artist Alfre-

Colosseum Fine Arts sees the future — of art, that is. The art gallery, located at 7946 Ivanhoe Ave., is bringing a series of exhibitions to La Jolla, bridging the seaside community with a distant neighbor — and an immerging force in the art world — across the Pacific: China. “China’s government may not have always been receptive to art, but it’s opening up now,” said gallery president Floyd Elmore. “Artists have traditionally been guarded by the powers that be, and expression has not always been what the communist party was about. [Art] used to be very state sponsored, but it’s different now. It’s an amazing time period to be involved in this.” Between now and August, Colosseum will open five different exhibits showcasing different Chinese contemporary artists. The first show, opening with a reception on March 3, will

Zhonghua will be present at the March 3 event to discuss his inspiration and life as an artist in a communist country. “Some of these guys were the definition of a starving artist 10 years ago,” Elmore said. “Now, they’re experiencing a great level of success. The message behind it is so powerful. It’s really flourishing.” Elmore said the gallery worked very closely with the artists and several curators to bring the exhibits to La Jolla — a feat in itself, he said. “Some of this kind of art has been shown through a few traveling exhibitions or at a handful of galleries in the U.S., but you still really have to go out

Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss — that ubiquitous purveyor of children’s literature and one of La Jolla’s best-loved claims to fame — would be turning 108 years old on March 2. Though he died in 1991, his legacy lives on through his timeless books (and the growing number of movies being adapted from them, including “The Lorax,” set to release on his birthday), his art and, at least locally, a number of buildings that bear his name. In honor of the great rhyming master, the La Jolla Village News spoke with his wife, Audrey Geisel, about life with Dr. Seuss. La Jolla Village News: How did you meet Theodor Geisel? Audrey Geisel: We met on a whaling boat. It got rather rocky and unsteady. I was pitched in his direction and we collided. That was the beginning. LJVN: What was your role in his professional life? Were you involved in the books at all? AG: I was very involved in the books, particularly in the color choices. It was always his book, but I was there as kind of a collaborator. LJVN: “The Lorax” is now coming out. Have you seen it? AG: Oh, yes. We went up and saw [the premier] and it’s quite good. We approve it. LJVN: Were you consulted at all on the movie? AG: Yes, the [producers] came down and we met here. I know [producer] Chris Meledandri real well, so there was a collaboration. It’s a nice movie. LJVN: “The Lorax” focuses on environmental concerns. Was that a topic Dr. Seuss felt strongly about?

Sushi chefs teach the fine art of delicious fare BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS Expert sushi chefs at Roppongi restaurant and sushi bar will share their valuable knowledge about the art of sushi making in a handson monthly “Saturday Sushi School,” complete with a live sushi demonstration, student preparation of their own hand-crafted rolls, and an exquisite three-course lunch with sake pairings to follow at the award-winning Asian fusion restaurant in the heart of La Jolla village. Guests in the Saturday afternoon class, which starts March 3, will get the chance to dig their hands into delicate and fresh ingredients and transform them into a few of the edible works of art offered on the restaurant’s bold

Gas prices
have been starting to give drivers anxiety, and prices don’t show signs of coming back down any time soon. According to a report by AAA and a study by the Lundberg Survey, San Diego motorists are paying some of the highest prices in the nation. Bishop’s and La Jolla duel it out for water polo finals BY DON BALCH | VILLAGE NEWS The Bishop’s School’s girls’ varsity water polo squad fought off a spirited effort by La Jolla High School and captured the San Diego CIF Div. III Championship by a 9-6 margin at Coggan Pool on Feb. 25. It was the 15th straight finals appearance for the Knights and their ninth title during that time. It was also a rematch of last year’s teams, which Bishop’s also won. The Knights’ Stanford-bound senior goalie Gabby Stone made 15 saves, including 11 in the second half to help secure the win. Freshman Hannah Carrillo scored four goals to lead the team with Jill Bushman adding two goals. La Jolla was led by seniors Ariel Arcidiacono, Scarlett Hallahan and Sarah Young with two goals each, while sophomore goalie Lauren Silver stopped 12 shots in the net. The match was tight in the first half with Arcidiacono staking La Jolla to a 43 lead, but Bishop’s responded with quick, inside-scoring passes by Bush-
NEWSbriefs LJHS celebrates 90 years on Nautilus St. The Foundation of La Jolla High School will host “Nautilus, an Evening to Benefit La Jolla High School” on March 10 to celebrate the school’s 90th year on Nautilus Street and to help raise much-needed funds for the high school at a time when public schools are in dire need of financial support. “The fiscal difficulties we hear about

Grunion Bowl tests big smarts on tiny subjects Two teams from La Jolla High School will compete against 16 other teams in the Grunion Bowl 2012 — a fastpaced academic bowl that focuses solely on ocean life and the marine environment — on March 3. The regional competition for the 15th annual
National Ocean Science Bowl will be held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus, during which teams will be competing in “Jeopardy”style matches. While grunions are pretty small in size, the Grunion Bowl is a pretty big deal to the 18 teams involved in the competition who look to move on to the national finals in Baltimore. culture in China. Even things like Ming Dynasty vases that were sold off to foreigners are being purchased back en masse.” Still, though, the art is not only in demand because it’s been hard to get. It’s actually good, too. Elmore said Zhonghua’s work combines Chinese writing and symbols with English, and in most of his works, which are relatively large at more than 5 feet tall, make use of uncommon media, like foil, creating an almost ethereal look at times, which Elmore called

A new 650-seat movie theater, the Playhouse Theatre, opened in La Jolla on Girard Avenue. Many haven’t heard of the Playhouse Theater — the name was changed to the Cove Theatre four months later. There was already a movie theater in La Jolla – the Granada Theatre – at the corner of Girard and Wall streets. The owners of the Granada Theatre, which seated 712 people, bought the Playhouse Theatre in July 1948 and changed its name shortly after. Spencer Wilson became the manager of the theater when it opened and continued his tenure as manager for many years. He had come to La Jolla in 1933 and was manager of the Granada Theater until it closed down

The last showing of a movie at the Cove was in January 2003, after which the owners decided not to renew the lease for a theater. The Cove Theater closed down for good after 55 years – the end of a nostalgic era in La Jolla history.

La Jolla’s solar industry continues to impress Maintaining San Diego’s position as a green leader now comes with a boost in creating more jobs for the city. University City-based OneRoof Energy, a new solar energy company, announced on Feb. 22 with CleanTECH San Diego and Mayor Jerry Sanders the creation of more than 100 new green jobs for San Diego. OneRoof Energy is the first U.S. residential solar company to work directly with roofers to sell and install its systems. Last year, the company received

do Ramos Martinez. The mosaic was assembled in Italy and shipped to the U.S. in “puzzle pieces,” to be reassembled on the church’s wall. The assembly would require painstaking attention to detail and tedious placement to assure the tiles were in the correct spot — which, as Tarnoveanu found out, did not exactly happen. When he started work on the mosaic in August, after more than two months of research, he discovered the excessive gaps between tiles — in some places as wide as a half-inch — had been filled in with cement and painted over with an oil-based paint. Tarnoveanu initially hoped to finish the project in November, but after a few
delays, that deadline was pushed back to December. Then, December came and went and the project continued to expand in scope. More gaps were found, more tiles were discovered to be crumbling and issues arose almost daily. After spending six months toiling away both in his studio and on a second-story platform outside the church, Tarnoveanu was able to tear down the scaffolding for the last time in late February. “There were a lot of challenges we didn’t know about before,” he said. “But just remember, the restoration of Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ by Pinin Brambilla Barcillon, which was about two-thirds the size of this work, took 21 years to finish. The restoration process is very complex and can only be done by experts in the field. That’s why I can’t just hire anybody to assist me. Barcillon did the same thing;
she decided to do most of the restoration herself.” Rev. Jim Rafferty, the church’s ninth pastor since its founding in 1906 (the building itself was built in 1937), said he is happy with the rejuvenation of the “Star of the Sea” — Mary’s nautical scriptural title, believed by fisherman to watch over all the people on the sea — but he is also quite pleased to have the project over with. “Dan very painstakingly did everything he possibly could without taking the thing off the wall and putting it together like a jigsaw puzzle,” he said. “And we’re glad that it’s done. It was inconvenient and messy, and the scope was larger than Dan originally ascertained, but I believe he did as thorough a job as he could.” The mosaic, which Tarnoveanu estimates to house about 250,000 tiles, should be in line to last quite a while as a result of the restoration. “The modified lime mortar is better for exterior mosaics because, unlike the Portland cement, it actually gets harder when exposed to water,” he said. “Almost one-eighth of the whole mosaic was damaged, and that was mostly due to water infiltration coming in contact with the cement. In fact, the use of Portland cement is forbidden in Europe in restoration of mosaics and frescoes.” The other challenge Tarnoveanu faced during his months inhabiting the scaffolding overlooking Girard Avenue was as inevitable as death and taxes: weather. It seemed almost every combination of atmospheric conditions made it more difficult — or impossible — for him to work. The bright sun reflecting off the tiles distorted the colors, forcing him to wait for a cloud to pass so he could correctly match the tesserae, some of which varied only slightly in color (the sun also made the lime mortar dry too fast). Anything more than a light drizzle, of course, made placing the 2-centimeter-by-1-centimeter tiles on the vertical surface precarious. As for illumination, Tarnoveanu said he tried every type of man-made light, but as soon as twilight rolled in, it became impossible to see variations in color and minuscule spaces between tiles. The only conditions that allowed him to work uninterrupted, it seemed, were daylight, dry and overcast. In the end, though work lasted twice as long as anticipated, though the weather cooperated much less often than not and though the amount of deterioration was determined to be much broader than thought, Tarnoveanu has returned the “Star of the Sea” to beyond her original glory. After administering the finishing touches, Tarnoveanu washed the mosaic with a purifying turpentine, then applied a varnish that will protect against UV rays. And so, finally, Mary is ready once again to watch over and protect fisherman and all others who venture out to sea.

CONTINUED FROM Page 1 AG: He cared about it, yes. The book’s Truffula trees came from a trip to Africa. He looked up at one of the [local] trees, and said, “That’s my tree. They’ve stolen my tree.” So that’s where that came from. LJVN: Do you still sit down and read his books from time to time? AG: Well, life goes on, so that doesn’t really happen. But I do oversee everything and attend the movies and so forth. LJVN: What would you say was his objective with his books? Was it the artistic endeavor or the learning aspect — teaching children — or both? AG: He had a foot in many areas. But learning was definitely a part of it. LJVN: What was your life like living with him? Did it change greatly after the two of you were married? AG: It changed quite a deal, as I had never been with an author. I had been with someone who was in medicine before, so it was very different being with the kind of person he was. LJVN: What was his sense of humor like? AG: It was very dry, very wry. With friends, he was always wry and dry and very humorous. LJVN: A lot of the plant-life around San Diego that looks like it’s straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. Do you know if he was inspired by some of the flora here? AG: Oh, he was inspired by everything he could use and make a part of his books and his world. So yes, it could be. LJVN: Do you do anything to celebrate his birthday every year? AG: Well, we never really celebrated anybody’s birthday. They weren’t such a big deal. But I will be there for the birthday occasions [at UCSD] and that sort of thing. In honor of Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday, UC San Diego will celebrate with an annual party on March 2 starting at 11:50 a.m. at the foot of Geisel Library. Free punch and cake will be served while entertainment is provided by the Teeny Tiny Pit Orchestra playing songs from “The Cat in the Hat” songbook. An exhibit of materials from the Dr. Seuss Collection will also be on view through March 9 in Geisel Library.
La Jolla’s Riford Center has been developing rapidly, with substantial facility improvements and programs that address a wide range of interests for adults aged at least 18 to 88. The center arranges trips to interesting locales (both local and distant), hosts a prestigious Distinguished Speaker series and holds classes on a wide variety of subjects. A Conservatorship is for adults over 18 that can no longer take care of themselves or their finances. They can be established for older adults and for developmentally disabled adults. Floral is everywhere this season — jeans, dresses, tops, skirts and even ballet flats — and what better time than spring to show off that feminine side? It may be intimidating, but once you get it right you will be hooked and find yourself doing combinations you never dreamed of. Fashion is about having fun and taking chances. dants and lived in their native Switzerland. After seeing much of the world, they decided La Jolla was the very best part of it, and moved here in 2002. Now, when they’re not conducting cooking classes with wit and aplomb, Urs runs his small but successful catering business, offering everything from intimate gourmet dinners to full-service corporate events. Ursula, a skilled and talented painter, does faux finishing, trompe l’oeil and murals for interior designers and private clients. The Riford’s kitchen was designed with small, intimate cooking classes in mind, and (other than a minor design Masquerade: above: Orousha and Chuck Brocious, Mali issue with the plumbing, now resolved) and Nasser Vigius (honorary chairs), Barbie and Dan Spinaz- it’s perfect for these events, which are zola held approximately monthly. The elevated, tiered seating assures everyone a fine view as Urs — with no small amount of humor — prepares each part of the multi-course dinner. Printed recipes minimize note taking, and the only “test” for this school is whether you can duplicate the dish yourself at home. But even for those who can’t, Ursula makes sure the evening is a highly enjoyable success by serving every course to each attendee, and making sure their wine glasses never quite run dry. Last week, chef Urs showed how to make fettuccini with shrimp La Jolla; on March 22, he’ll do a “fancy weekend dinner.” No matter the menu, guests always enjoy an entertaining evening, a gourmet meal prepared before their eyes and the opportunity to learn how to recreate it themselves.

Sara O’Meara and Yvone Fedderson founded Childhelp in 1959 to help victims of child abuse and neglect. The founders have since received five consecutive Nobel Prize nominations, and their little group has become a leading national nonprofit organization whose efforts and resources are focused on treatment, prevention, and research. Last week, the Childhelp Southern California Auxiliary (CSCA) masquerade ball, “Phantom,” promised an evening of “Fantasy, Decadence and Charity” — rather an attractive combination (everybody wins!). The very welldressed guests concealed their identities with ornate Venetian-style masks, slightly complicating their consumption of hors d’oeuvres and libations (if not their silent auction bidding) at the pre-dinner reception. Later, it would be revealed that the guests’ masks were an allegory for the “mask of child abuse” behind which abused kids hide. Once all were seated for dinner, emcee Sandi Newton of CBS-TV opened the program, which introduced honorary chairs Nasir and Mali Digius, 16-year Childhelp devotee Ron McMillan and guest speaker Jill Babb (Childhelp National Board VP). Jill revealed that child abuse occurs every 10 seconds in the U.S., and results in the deaths of more than five children each day. She presented the Founders’ Award to honorees Richard and Arlene Esgate, longtime supporters of Childhelp and numerous San Diego area charitable and cultural causes. Both Esgates spoke eloquently of the importance of Childhelp’s work. Following a well-enjoyed dinner, a live auction offered several unusual items, including airfare and admission tickets for two to the famed Barrett-Jackson auto auction and the “Drive the Dream Gala” hosted by Childhelp and BarrettJackson. The evening ended with some very energetic dancing to the music of NRG (who had also played, though somewhat more sedately, during dinner.
