In February, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. read a letter by a visionary local architect withdrawing his controversial proposal for a Marine Street memorial, and got an update from city officials on La Jolla Cove Pavilion redevelopment. Project manager Elizabeth Schroth-Nichols updated La Jolla park planners on the status quo of redevelopment of La Jolla Cove Pavilion, a long-term project to replace outdated and deteriorating restroomshower facilities with an attractive, sustainable pavilion honoring the beauty of the Cove and Scripps Park. “We have approval for the aesthetics of the buildings and are working through the design,” said SchrothNichols. “We opened bids on the project in late January, and construction will begin soon after the construction bid is awarded, which we anticipate happening in the next couple months.” The city spokesperson added that worn grass in SEE PROJECT PG. 4

91-year-old La Jolla volunteer cleans up Coast Walk’s clutter BY VICTORIA DAVIS | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
rom repainting railings and benches to removing invasive plant species, Brenda Fake, founder of Friends of Coast Walk, says it has “taken a village” to maintain La Jolla’s beloved Coast Walk Trail. Focusing on the safety and environmental preservation and restoration of the sea-side trail, the nonprofit has partnered with the City of San Diego on a few Coast Walk repairs, but Fake says it’s primarily the informal efforts of community members that has helped Coast Walk to thrive. “If it weren’t for our volunteers, things would not be as cleaned up or as nice as they are along the parks,” said Fake. “These people do this without any acknowledgement, but just with this sincere desire to keep their park clean.” One of Coast Walk Trail’s oldest volunteers is John Abbe, a 91-yearold Casa de Manana Retirement Community resident. With a plastic bag, trash grabber and “clothes I don’t care about ruining” as his equipment, Abbe goes out once a week to pick up the garbage along the trail that hikers leave behind. The avid volunteer also cuts back trail weeds and excess brush in addition to sweeping bench areas. “I like the term ‘volunteer’

because when people see you picking up trash along a road or trail, they think you’re working off a DUI or something,” said Abbe. “Or they think you’re homeless looking for stuff to recycle. I’m neither one of those. This isn’t for my own satisfaction, but to acknowledge that we need people to be more contentious along the coast. La Jolla Village itself
has a real problem with littering.” Abbe used to work with the American River Parkway foundation when he and his wife, Carol, lived in Sacramento. He says he has always had an affinity for community service and, after moving to La Jolla two years ago, noticed the Coast Walk Trail’s need for some TLC. “The city does pick up along the
areas where there’s access by pickup truck, but when they get up to the cove here where the trail starts, that’s as far as they go,” said Abbe who has picked up everything from baby shoes to beach towels and even some collapsible chairs. “The Coast Walk Trail itself is not policed by sanitation or pick-up people like it should be.”

According to Fake, the Parks and Beaches personnel collect trash at only three places along the half-mile trail: the parking area on Coast Walk, the trail head on Prospect, and at the trail head by the Cave Shop. While Timothy W. Graham, spokesperson for the City of San Diego, says the trash cans at each location are “checked daily and emptied as needed,” there’s about a quarter stretch of trail where littering has not been maintained, until Abbe came along. “John looks after that trail like it’s his own yard,” said Bill Robbins, unofficial “Mayor of The Cove” who is also a retiree and trail clean-up volunteer. “He’s part of my merry band of ‘Litter Gitters.’” “Government doesn’t always have the money to service all community needs, so they rely heavily on volunteers and nonprofits to fill the gaps,” said Abbe. “This is the final career of my whole life and, believe it or not, I get more job satisfaction from this than any regular jobs I’ve had before.” For those interested in volunteering, go to friendsofcoastwalk.org.

Diplomacy Council seeking host families BY EMILY BLACKWOOD | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
he San Diego Diplomacy Council is currently looking for six local families to host business leaders from Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia coming to California on a fellowship program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the program hosts young professionals between the ages from 25-35 who are up-and-coming leaders. According to Heidi Knuff, the director of custom programs and services for the council, the professionals are fluent in English and are in San Diego to work 40 hours a week with local companies. They have stipends for public transportation, and host families are only asked to
T
give them access for breakfast and dinner meals in their home. “The idea is to see what life in San Diego is like,” Knuff said. “Host families can show them around San Diego if they’d like to.” Knuff said that while there are benefits such as tax write-offs for the host families, most people do it for the experience and the friendships. A lot of host families — like Isela and David Rouillard — end up hosting again and again. The Rouillards have been volunteering for 10 years, hosting diplomats from places like Nepal, Turkey, and Russia. Anyone interesting in learning more about the program and signing up to be a host family can email Knuff at heidi@sandiegodiplomacy.org

In 2016, they packed their bikes and set off from Santa Monica on what would be a 58-day, 2,700mile trip along Route 66 to Chicago. Together they shared a meal with fourth-generation farmers, survived the Midwest’s humidity (“like breathing through a wet washcloth,” Briscoe says), mailed some treasures home that seemed like great ideas at the time. “Quincy was going to learn how to play the ukulele,” Briscoe chuckled. “That never happened.” During their cross-country trek, the La Jolla photographer and
stations and portable toilets. “It’s a very tight area we will be working with,” said city senior traffic engineer George Freiha adding, “We’ll be working with City Parks and Recreation to provide porta potties and maintenance.” “The grass area in front of the (existing) restrooms has a history of abuse,” pointed out LJPB board member Dan Allen suggesting, “Maybe we could put in something other than just ordinary grass, like football field turf.” Also at the meeting, LJPB president Ann Dynes read a letter from architect Erik Holtsmark. “My project to develop the dead end of
Marine Street has run its gamut,” said Holtsmark in the letter. “I am curtailing my efforts on this project in view of the excessive protests both orally and via acerbic emails. It is obvious there is emotional opposition to improvements of any kind. “My vision was certainly extreme in exploring paramount possibilities for the location,” continued the letter. “Even deleting all the artistic and cultural elements, the fact remains that at some point in time convenient access, sanitation, safety and lifeguard needs must be provided. I wish to express my gratitude for the time and involvement that La Jolla Parks and Beaches has afforded me.”
author took notes and portraits of the places they rode through and all the people they met. When they returned, he compiled it all into a book titled "The Road Between Us: A Father & Son Bicycle Route 66,” which was later turned into a short film and even won an award at Filmed By Bike festival in Portland. Briscoe said that no matter how people hear of their story, the reaction is usually the same. “So many people said and continue to say, ‘I wish I had done that with my kid’ or ‘I wish I could do that with my dad,’” he said. “That’s a big deal because so many kids have problems with their parents, and all it takes is one
memory like that to kind of reshape that dialogue and that relationship. “It’s something kids talk about forever. I know Quincy is going to talk about it forever, and I know I do every chance I get. But it’s never too late to do something like this.” And for Briscoe, it’s never too late to do something like this – again. This June, he and Quincy will be setting sail to Hawaii and back, which he plans to turn into a book and short film titled, “The Wind Between.” To follow Briscoe and Quincy along on their adventures, follow him on Instagram at @chrisbriscoe.
Business Company aims to help private collectors preserve their historical objects and art BY EMILY BLACKWOOD | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
f you’ve inherited a family heirloom that once belonged to your great-great-great grandmother, your first instinct would probably be to proudly display it in your living room. But if you live in a place like La Jolla and are prone to opening up your windows and doors to feel that cool ocean breeze, you might be doing that precious object more harm than you realize. Enter Melanie Dellas and Karen Lacy. The two San Diego women officially started Muse Curatorial Consulting Group in 2017 out of a love for preserving historical artifacts. Lacy worked in the museum industry for nearly 20 years; most recently as a collection manager for the San Diego Museum of Man in Balboa Park. Dellas interned at the museum under Lacy after finishing grad school and was later hired on as her collection assistant. They curated the popular “Monsters!” and realized they made a pretty good team. They also realized that there was a whole group of people who could use their combined expertise: private collectors.

“Working in the collections department, we’d get calls and emails all the time asking for advice on how to take care of something,” Lacy said; with that "something” usually being decades old. “Back then, we didn’t have time to help them,” Dellas said. “So we saw a niche we knew we could fill.” Today, Dellas and Lacy are helping people all over San Diego —
many in La Jolla — preserve and restore their fine art, vintage pieces, historic, and family heirlooms. Whether it’s getting rid of the leech salt off of ancient ceramics, restoring an old astronaut training suit or building custom storage boxes for pre-Columbian pottery, the women behind MCCG can do almost anything. And if they can’t, they know someone who can. “Museums are mostly understaffed and overworked and can’t help private people,” Dellas said. "We want to help as many people as we can and save any many objects as we can for future generations." “We pretty much will do anything to protect the collection they have,” Lacy said. “We want to keep it safe from the natural disasters in our area like fires, floods, and earthquakes." While MCCG’s services are individualized to the client’s needs, they often do things like collection care, management inventory, conservation, exhibit design, archival care, packing, grant writing, training programs, object history research, custom rehousing and answer any questions.

The La Jolla building home to Harry’s Coffee Shop and an adjacent building have been sold for a combined price of nearly $9 million, but the landmark restaurant known for its folksy charm isn’t going anywhere. “The Harry’s parcel did sell, however we have a long lease,” said Harry’s owner John Rudolph, a former professional golfer who still plays high-level amateur events. Harry’s and the retail shop of Everett Stunz at 7545-7553 Girard Ave. will remain in place under the new owner of the 7,649 square-foot building, John F. Jaeger and Joanne S. Bill Shrader of Colliers International San Diego Region’s Urban Property Team represented the seller of both buildings, Rancho Girard, LLC. SUSAN MEISSNER BOOK SIGNING AT WARWICK’S San Diego historical fiction author Susan Meissner will be releasing a heartfelt new novel this March, titled, “The Last Year of the War.” Meissner is known to capture pivotal moments in history that make for emotional, page-turning stories. “The Last Year of the War,” told from the point-ofview of a 14-year-old German-American girl during WWII, shines a light on the U.S. government’s little-known repatriation program for the war, while also resonating with timely questions about what it means to be an American. Messiner will hold a book signing on Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Warwick’s, 7812 Girard Ave.

LJHS baseball alumni game: Retired judge reminisces about Viking baseball days BY ED PIPER | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
Robert Coates can remember it as if it happened yesterday. It was 1954, his senior year. La Jolla’s baseball team faced San Diego High, that year’s eventual CIF champion. (There was only one division at that time.) “In my first at-bat, I hit a triple. My next time up, the pitcher was afraid I was going to do it again. “I hit a pitch off the end of the bat like a pool cue. He thought it was a line drive, so he ducked and spun around. The ball hit him right in the fanny. I got on first base safely with a single.” Coates, a retired 28-year Superior
Court judge, was holding court from his wheelchair in the visitors’ dugout at La Jolla’s home field. The occasion was the Vikings’ 26th Annual Alumni Game, with 21 fellow former players facing Coach Gary Frank’s 2019 varsity in a nine-inning game. The present varsity thumped the “old guys” 18-3, but that didn’t dim the enthusiasm of Coates or any of the other alumni, including Stan Smith. While Coates, 82, graduated six years before Smith, Class of 1960, the third baseman and catcher/second baseman have become fast friends over the course of several alumni games right on this field.
A.J. Muihlenburg was an English teacher on campus who counseled students. “He taught us Shakespeare and other British literature,” recalls Coates. “On the day I was named team Most Valuable Player, he came over to me in class and said, ‘Bob, I’m very proud of you.’ That meant a lot to me.” The hot corner player, who recalls having a “terrific arm,” says, “I was hitting just about .400 until I got sick near the end of the season. My last at-bat (after returning from the illness) came against Duke Hottell, an All-City player from Kearny. A lefty, he threw a curveball that was curving at me. I hit it for an RBI.

‘Three Identical Strangers’ – a movie about the separation of triplets Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. n 1963, I was a student at Columbia University getting my master’s degree in clinical social work and writing book reviews for the Child Study Association. Dr. Peter Neubauer, a prominent child psychiatrist and director of the Child Development Center, had seen my work and called to say he was looking to hire someone to identify psychiatrists and psychoanalysts writing about child development who might be interested in spending a week in Israel to study children living in a kibbutz. I was thrilled to be selected as his new research assistant. My literature review while at the Child Development Center led me to identify and contact 50 therapists from the U.S., Europe, and Israel who were interested in spending one week to observe children in a kibbutz. That summer, I spent time in Kibbutz Dahlia with Neubauer organizing a one-week symposium, which was held the following summer. As a
I
result of that symposium, Neubauer’s book, “Children in Collectives – Child-rearing Aims and Practices in the Kibbutz” was published by Charles Thomas Publishers, Springfield, Ill., in 1965. While working at the Child Development office, I would overhear colleagues talk about a study of identical twins that were up for adoption. I was told that there were no couples willing to adopt more than one child. The Louise Wise Adoption Agency decided that they should separate the babies so that each could find a home. I always thought it was so sad that siblings could not be adopted together. Neubauer saw this as an opportunity to study the issue of nature versus nurture. I had no involvement in that research, nor the decision-making process, nor its implementation. In 1965, I left the U.S., moved to Switzerland, and never heard anything further about the study. Two years ago I got a phone call from a movie crew from England wanting to interview me about a film they were making concerning that twin study. I told them I really did not know anything about the study and would be of no use to them. They still wanted to interview me because, being in my 90s, I was the

only surviving person who had been one of Neubauer’s research assistants. Wanting to be helpful, I agreed, and so a few months later seven crew members appeared in my apartment ready to film. They asked about objects in my apartment, about life in a retirement community, and about the amazing opportunity to study twins separated shortly after birth. They spent the day with me and also filmed the premises. I was happy to show them around, thinking I was putting White Sands on the map. They were very positive about the study saying what a wonderful opportunity it was to study nature versus nurture. When I saw the movie, I was shocked and incredibly upset! I had never heard of these triplets and now was juxtaposed with them in the same movie as if I had some knowledge about their lives. It was awful to see the depiction of the triplets’ pain. In the movie, I am seen as condoning their separation for the purpose of research, when in fact the first I knew of it was when I saw the movie. When I left the U.S. in 1965, the triplets were babies. The movie shows them at age 6 months with no one wanting to adopt three boys. I now wonder
whether putting them together in foster care or at least letting them know of each other’s existence would have been better. In the 1960s, the policy was closed adoptions, where parents could not be told anything about the birth parents nor any existing siblings. Thankfully, that policy has changed to open adoptions, where children can meet their birth mothers and siblings if they so wish. Fortunately, today’s requirement for transparency does not permit this type of research to be conducted. I have been contacted by movie companies and talk shows asking me to discuss this movie, but had to refuse as I signed a contract with the movie company to not to accept any invitations to further address the twin study. This column is being written because I have been erroneously accused of being involved in the separation and study of the triplets. Today, as I look at the movie and read about the study, I am appalled that there was a time when this was accepted as legitimate research. Natasha Josefowitz is the author of more than 20 books. LA JOLLA VA MEDICAL CENTER UNDER FIRE FOR HUMAN RESEARCH After two whistleblowers made allegations of dangerous human research being conducted at VA Medical Center in La Jolla, Congress announced that it will hold a hearing as early as spring, according to inewsource.org The whistleblowers claim a former doctor and other higher-ups put the lives of veterans suffering from alcoholism and liver disease at risk for research that involved taking liver biopsies through a catheter in the neck. One patient was reportedly “oozing with blood” and needed an emergency transfusion after the procedure. The study, led by former San Diego VA division chief Dr. Samuel Ho, took place between 2014 to 2016.

Wiggles & Waggles fashion show at Del Mar Country Club goes to the dogs Fashion Files Diana Cavagnaro
nternational fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes and Rancho Coastal Humane Society presented Wiggles & Waggles on Feb. 26 at the Del Mar Country Club. This fashion show luncheon started with a champagne reception and silent auction. Rancho Coastal Humane Society’s CEO/president Judi Sanzo, and director of donor and community relations Kelly Peters, welcomed the guests. The dogs modeling in the show were also on hand to greet the crowd and wiggled and waggled around socializing with everyone. They were all decked out wearing a Zandra Rhodes original. All the dogs in the show had been adopted from the Rancho Coast Humane Society. The pianist providing the music for the afternoon was Jay Dee Cutting. The luncheon began with the menu created by executive chef Jonathan Sudar of the Del Mar Country Club for all the attendees. The fashion show started with models strolling throughout the tables. This tearoom-style fashion modeling gave the guests a chance to feel the fabric of each garment and see the garments up close. The models showed off designs created by Rhodes from her Party Collection and The Anniversary Collection. The stars of the show were the furry friends who moved down the runway with their models. These adorable dogs were wearing canine couture with specially designed dog jackets for the runway with amazing dog leashes to match. The entire audience oohed and aahed for this was the highlight of show. During the afternoon there were many wonderful things for sale. One was a special Rhodes Coffee Blend &

Tea provided by Café Moto. Each one of the blends came from a womanowned coffee business. There was a gift table with Rhodes creations and my favorites were the dog leashes and dog jackets seen in the fashion show. These were a big hit with everyone. For an added bonus, guests were able try on garments after the show for purchase.
