Concours d’Elegance hits the streets By MARIKO LAMB hat began nearly a decade ago as a “car show for car guys by car guys,” has evolved over time to befit the title of the eighth annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance. While the show continues to pay homage to its roots, those same passionate car guys have cleaned the grease from their fingernails and transformed into cigarand champagne-wielding gentlemen donning bowties for this year’s world-class event. Each year, La Jolla’s signature car show has seen drastic improvements in quality — from its vendors and the festivities surrounding the event to the automobiles themselves, said Mike Dorvillier, chair of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance committee. This year, La Jolla’s formerly dubbed Motor Car Classic

has been elevated in title to reflect the high quality of the car show itself, as well as its growth into a full weekend of events that incorporates and promotes the entire community — including beneficiaries of the event, the La Jolla Historical Society and the Monarch School. “For the first seven years of its life, it’s been a very high-end event in a concours venue,” said Dorvillier, referring to the show’s location at the scenic Ellen Browning Scripps Park. “We’ve always had that, so I felt that it was due time for this event to rise to the status that this village deserves from the standpoint of quality.” At this year’s show, more than 150 of the finest automobiles — ranging from classics to sports cars

and motorcycles to horseless carriages — will be competing in the concours, with an additional 75 automobiles on display at the car corral. In salute to the founding of the car show tradition, La Jolla Concours d’Elegance organizers decided to come full circle with this year’s theme by featuring Italian marques — the focus of the inaugural car show eight years ago. Seventy-five judges, led by chief judge Dr. Cy Conrad, will scrutinize every aspect of each car’s preservation, restoration, design, quality, care, cleanliness and authenticity to determine the top three cars in each competing class. Marine-mammal rescues spike in seasonal form BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS In recent weeks, beachgoers in coastal communities ranging from Sunset Cliffs to Black’s Beach have reported a high number of sick sea lions and seals in need of rescue. The recent spike of distressed pinnipeds may concern local animal lovers, but animal-care specialists at SeaWorld San Diego said the upswing is actually nothing out of the ordinary. “This is our rescue season. This is the height of it,” said SeaWorld spokeswoman Kelly Terry. “We’re on track to have an average season, which is about 200 rescues a year.” Year after year, SeaWorld’s animalcare specialists rescue hundreds of sea lions, seals and birds in Southern Califor-

nia, with the occasional whale or dolphin rescue added to the mix. California sea lions are the most commonly rescued marine mammals, followed by elephant seal pups and harbor seals, according to officials with SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program,. Last year, SeaWorld experienced a light season with only 60 pinniped rescues in San Diego, said Terry. Busy years, like ones bringing El Niño weather conditions, can send rescue numbers soaring to more than 400 rescues in a single year. The seasonal spike is primarily the result of pups’ lessons on tough love and growing up. “A lot of the younger animals are just getting weaned from mom and they’re not always prepared to catch fish on their

own,” said Terry. “Once they can’t catch fish — that’s how they get their hydration — they get dehydrated.” So far this year, SeaWorld has rescued 24 marine mammals, including 20 sea lions, two elephant seals and two harbor seals from areas all along San Diego’s coastline. “Most of the ones we’ve seen in the last week have been dehydrated, malnourished and underweight,” Terry said. “One of the first things we do is give them a veterinary examination to see if there are any other issues or infections. Typically, it’s just getting them rehydrated and getting them fattened up. They stay in our care from six to eight weeks if they’re not showing any signs of infections.” In most cases, dehydrated pups learn

their hard-knock life lessons and are back on their fins in no time. Occasionally, however, the pinnipeds are victims of circumstance. On March 9, one sea lion was rescued after becoming entangled in fishing gear at the base of Devil’s Slide near La Jolla Cove. Rescuers had to rappel down a cliff for the dramatic rescue, cut the fishing gear off — including removing a hook in the sea lion’s mouth — and release the sea lion back into the open water.

La Jolla’s beaches beget trash, treasures

Georgeanna W. Lipe May 21, 1909 ~ March 25, 2012

When Chris Cott saw the cover of our March 8 issue featuring the various finds of photographer Don Balch on La Jolla’s shores, he decided to send in some photos of his own discoveries while combing the community’s beaches. A lot of what he finds is trash, he said, as shown above. From time to time, however, he is able to turn that trash into a treasure with a bit of creativity. Cott has recycled discarded items into works of art, like the candle holder, above right, made from a lobster trap, and the planter box made from driftwood and shells, left. Together with canine helpers Jackson and Gus, Cott has made some pretty wild discoveries. He has found cell phones, bikini tops, dive regulators and even a steering wheel from a boat — all items whose disappearance must certainly have been noticed by their original owners!

Georgeanna Lipe, a beloved matriarch of La Jolla, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, March 25. She was 102. She was born Georgeanna White in Nashville, Tenn. in 1909, the same year Mark Twain died. Her father came from a long line of Scottish-Irish pioneers who settled the South from North Carolina to Tennessee, and founded Knoxville, Tenn. Her maternal ancestors introduced the practice of breeding livestock to the northern Texas plains in the 1860s. Georgeanna attended Ward-Belmont College before graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in art and medical science in 1930. It was there she met her husband of 58 years, JT Lipe, a young medical student. A gifted artist, she worked for Vanderbilt’s Medical School in the Department of Medical Illustration, sketching surgical procedures for medical journals and research papers. The couple moved to Rochester, N.Y., where Dr. Lipe completed his residency training and Georgeanna worked for the University of Rochester School of Medicine supplementing their Depression-era income with her creative illumination of documents for local churches. In 1936, Dr. Lipe accepted a position in La Jolla and, sight unseen, they moved west. As he started his medical career, Georgeanna focused her energy on raising their three children, as well as becoming active with

Scripps Hospital’s Candlelight Ball, Scouts, The Wednesday Club, Mealson-Wheels and La Jolla Presbyterian Church. After her children left home, Georgeanna directed her focus back to her art career, transitioning from pen and ink to watercolors and becoming one of Southern California’s finest watercolor artists. She traveled the world attending workshops of noted artists, developing her interpretive style of spontaneity, fresh colors and free-flowing washes. She was

quoted as saying, “We live in a beautiful world, so let’s enjoy it in all its depth of color and infinite variety of design.” She showcased her work in exhibits throughout the U.S., winning acclaim, professional awards and positions with several corporate and private collectors, including the Copley Collection, Union Oil and Hospital Corp. of America. She was a charter member of the San Diego Watercolor Society and the La Jolla Art Association, as well as an active member of Watercolor West and the San Diego Art Institute. At 86, she opened her own gallery on Girard Avenue in La Jolla, providing a forum for local artists. When asked to describe Georgeanna, friend Patti Keyes said, “She had a smile as quick as her wit and warm as her heart. Her personality was a triple shot of curiosity, creativity and positivity, blended with an adventurous spirit and spunk.” Mrs. Lipe is survived by her children: Steele Lipe (Patricia) of Haymarket, Va.; Terry Jordan (Jerry) of Julian, Calif.; and Susanna Aalbers (John) of La Jolla; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A celebration of life and reception is planned for Saturday, April 14 at 3 p.m. at La Jolla Presbyterian Church. All are encouraged to wear watercolor colors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the San Diego Watercolor Society or La Jolla Presbyterian Church.

Tritons laying groundwork for ramped-up national presence BY JOHNNY MCDONALD | VILLAGE NEWS Progressively, rowing coach Zach Johnson believes his UC San Diego crew is about ready to venture into the collegiate Pac 12 stronghold that includes California State Berkeley and University of Washington, winners of eight of the last 10 national championships. “Honestly, we’re not quite at that level,” said the Tritons coach, who is now entering his sixth year at UCSD. “But last year, we were ranked nationally in the top 18. That’s something you don’t do overnight.” Johnson said he believes that year by year there are signs of getting a little closer to join UCLA, USC, Oregon, Stanford

and Oregon State. “Cal [Berkeley] and Washington are the cream of the crop and get a lot of kids from overseas,” said Johnson. He said he has prepared his team well enough to compete in the last two Copley Cups of the San Diego Crew Classic, and that the team will be fighting for a berth in the classic’s finals on April 1 off Crown Point. “We’ve got half the guys back from last year, which is a normal turnover,” Johnson said. “UCSD will also have a junior varsity, two freshmen and three alumni boats entered in the classic.” While UCSD’s crew seeks entry into the Pac 12, the school’s basketball team is looking toward the Big West Confer-

ence with San Diego State. UCSD schedules 10 to 11 crew races each year. “We begin practice at the end of September and the season could go as late as June if we qualify for the nationals,” he said. “The university has been very supportive. So, we’re taking our show on the road to Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Sacramento.” He said he establishes a game plan and turns it over to the coxswain, “who is the quarterback. “It’s my team but his boat,” Johnson said. UCSD scored convincing victories in the city championships and the Opening Day Regatta at Newport Beach the

Country Day girls hoopsters take it all the way in Sacramento BY DON BALCH | VILLAGE NEWS The La Jolla Country Day School girls’ basketball team went to Sacramento on a mission. After playoff eliminations in the last three years, the Torreys (32-1) won the Div. IV California State Championship with a resounding 72-41 victory over Richmond Salesian (31-5) at the capital’s Power Balance Pavilion on March 23. It was the third state crown for the Torreys, the last two coming in 2001 and 2002 when they were in Div. V. Junior Kelsey Plum set the tone with a game-high 32 points, including five three-pointers, and played solid defense on Richmond’s star player, Mariya Moore, when LJCD raced out to a big early lead. “We were ready,” said Plum after the

game. “With the tough schedule we’ve played, we were battle tested.” Plum’s quintet of treys tied formerLJCD star and eventual WNBA player Candice Wiggins for the most in a Div. IV title match. Torreys’ coach Terri Bamford, who has been there for all three titles, was impressed with Plum’s play. “She is as competitive as they come and had an amazing game,” Bamford said. Senior twin sisters Maya and Malina Hood displayed their usual consistent efforts with 19 points with 13 rebounds and 10 points, respectively. Maya Hood said they were determined to go all the way after a loss in last year’s So-Cal Regional Final. “Our team wasn’t going to let it happen again,” she said.

They’re hoping the event will be seen as a fun activity with the added bonus of being exposed to a group of people who are all looking for the same thing — someone to share their life with. “If someone is willing to put themselves out there, chances are they’re right to meet someone,” Vinn said. “Everyone wants to be happy and share their life with someone, and the ones who say they don’t are lying.”

In another instance in February, SeaWorld rescuers found an injured sea lion — which was named “Valentine” by SeaWorld staff — with an infected bullet wound to her left flipper. Although Valentine is still under the park staff’s care, she is doing well and will be released in a couple weeks, said Terry. Most recently, SeaWorld rescuers and San Diego lifeguards rescued a 12month-old pup in South Mission Beach, an elephant seal in Sunset Cliffs and two fully-grown male sea lions at La Jolla Cove — including one that weighed 300 pounds. The pup and elephant seal suffered from dehydration, and examinations are still ongoing for the two grown male sea lions. At the time of publication, the number of sea lions and seals in SeaWorld’s

care totaled 18. For beachgoers who encounter a marine mammal that appears to be in distress, Terry recommends notifying a lifeguard on duty first to check whether or not the animal is, in fact, ill or in danger. “If you observe an animal and you have doubts about the animal’s wellbeing, contact a lifeguard or other authority,” said Terry, explaining that sometimes the mammal is simply asleep or the mother has only left her pup for a short time. “It’s strongly advised not to touch the animal. It is dangerous because they can bite or have an infection. It is also a violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Leave it to the experts. Contact a lifeguard or call our seal hotline.” If the animal is determined to be in distress, Terry urged beachgoers to call SeaWorld’s animal rescue hotline at (800) 541-SEAL (7325).

Post office saga turns to community for imagination

The possible loss of the La Jolla post office will once again draw La Jollans out of their homes and into a community forum to brainstorm how the building might continue serving the region in the event it loses its postal services. Today, March 29, will be the “Re-Imagining Our La Jolla Post Office” Community Input meeting, hosted by the Save Our La Jolla Post Office Task Force and held at the La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St., at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will feature a panel of four community members representing the arts, community planning, history and development, according to the task force’s interim chairwoman, Leslie Davis. Panelists will present their ideas for possible future use of the building, after which input from the community will be encouraged. “We will document all of the input and send it to our community leaders,” wrote Davis in an email. The task force will also be collecting signatures for another petition to be sent to the U.S. Postal Service, much like the one sent to the Postal Regulatory Commission requesting the Wall Street post office be taken off the chopping block. — Kendra Hartmann

Presented in Japan each November, this extremely prestigious international award honors those who have contributed significantly to the scientific, cultural and spiritual betterment of mankind. Honorees are selected in three categories: advanced technology; basic sci-

ences; and arts and philosophy. Awardees are selected without regard to nationality, but about half have been American. Each laureate receives a diploma, a gold medal and 50 million yen (currently over $600,000). It’s Japan’s highest private award for global achievement. The program, ably hosted and emceed by the San Diego Opera’s Ian Campbell, continued after dessert with the introduction of the symposium’s eight scholarship recipients — high school students from the San Diego and Tijuana areas. Brief but captivating speeches by each honored laureate followed, interspersed with broadly international musical interludes performed by 17-year-old violin prodigy Mayumi Kanagawa, the USD Chorale Scholars (a baker’s dozen of talented singers), and veteran Broadway soprano Lisa Vroman (whose show tunes enthralled the audience). Everything was accomplished in an atmosphere of international elegance rarely seen outside this annual event.

*** Internationally noted Renée Fleming sang for a special March 24 benefit concert for the San Diego Opera. Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner sponsored the event, which launched SDO’s Bravissimo Campaign Fund, with an extremely generous $1 million donation — but for this very popular couple, such generosity is hardly unusual. The soft-spoken Prebys (who credits opera with having transformed his life) and his charming companion have been exceptionally — but quite quietly — supportive of a wide range of worthy area causes. The event was a great success. The gifted (and multiply well-dressed) soprano performed before a crowded house, and

the demonstratively appreciative audience enjoyed an incredibly varied program ranging from opera (Puccini’s “La bohème”) to John Williams’ themes from Star Wars, Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” show tunes by Bernstein, Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein, and Lerner and Loewe, and (would you believe?) music from Metallica and Death Cab for Cutie. SDO’s major supporters enjoyed substantial refreshments and posed for pictures in the Bravissimo Patron tent during the 20-minute intermission. Between numbers, listeners loved the lady’s lively loquaciousness, and at the program’s end, singer and audience repeatedly exchanged compliments — their enthusiastic standing ovations and her triple encores.

Lea Garnero and Ciara Burton of Lululemon modeled some of the store’s spring looks to demonstrate how you can look good while experiencing maximum comfort (thanks ladies!). Lea’s outfit is not only high function and stylish but her jacket could easily go back and forth between workout and casual clothing (Ride On Blazer, $168). It has amazing tuxedo detailing in the back, is cut to fit and look like a blazer, has an inside removable collar for extra warmth and looks like denim. This jacket is so versatile all you have to do is throw on a T-shirt, skinny jean and ballet sneaker and you are ready for a Chargers/Padres game. Ciara’s look is workout only, but still has that eye-catching quality. She modeled leggings (that also look like denim), a tank top (we went with white, but you could do orange, green or pink for a splash of color) and an adorable nautical hoodie. She could easily go for a brisk walk or serious workout at the YMCA. Her functionality is not compromised and she still looks great. She could accessorize with a tinted moisturizer, blush and
