La Jolla’s ‘Great Divide’ All eyes were on La Jolla Cove this past weekend. In addition to thousands of car aficionados flocking to the La Jolla Motor Car Classic at Ellen Browning Scripps Park on April 3, the nearby Children’s Pool saw a larger-than-usual crowd of both beach-goers and activists. Seal-protection advocates held a rally Sunday afternoon, displaying signage throughout the day and voicing their support for making beach access a pinniped-only right. Meanwhile, dozens of
pro-access proponents settled on the “seal side” of the no access rope — with kids playing in the shallow waters, divers entering the reef and many others settling in the sand, soaking up the sun during its rare appearances through the clouds. At least four police officers kept watch over occasional heated debates that broke out between those for and against human beach access, while seals relaxed on the rocks or in the sand. — Claire Harlin
Maya and Malina Hood are both star players on the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) girl’s basketball team. But for this set of twins, most of the similarities end there. “First of all, we don’t even look alike and second of all, I’m definitely the more outgoing twin. More loud, more bubbly,” said Maya, who stood in the spotlight this past basketball season for her scoring abilities. “She’s kind of the quiet, calm one and I’m the one that has all the energy.” While Malina may leave most of the hooting and hollering to her sister, she too has become an intangible part of a team that has been the talk of the town. Because of her quiet, calculated style, Malina was dubbed “the silent assassin” on the squad. “I don’t say much, but people say when I do talk its SEE TWINS, Page 8
Vocal protesters carried signs on April 3 that displayed their support of keeping the Children’s Pool a seal rookery.

Jury convicts Troyer in cafe crash case A jury on April 6 found La Jollan Ronald Troyer, 66, guilty of all charges relating to his Aug. 15 crash into Cass Street Café. He is convicted of driving under the influence of marijuana, reckless driving causing great bodily injury, hit and run, and driving with a suspended license. Five people were seriously injured in the incident. Judge William Kronberger, Jr., set sentencing for May 4 and Deputy District Attorney David Uyar said the maximum sentence is 15 years in prison. Jury deliberations, which began April 5, lasted less than three hours. The incident happened at about 7 p.m. at the café, located at 5550 La Jolla Blvd. A number of witnesses testified about

their broken bones and other injuries that were sustained when Troyer’s 1984 Chrysler jumped the curb and hit teenagers on the sidewalk. One teenager was dragged by the car to the café. She suffered a broken pelvis, arm and leg. Troyer’s attorney, David Thompson, told the jury his client had a seizure while driving. “All he is guilty of … is driving with a suspended license,” he said, adding there is “not enough evidence” to show he was impaired by marijuana. Uyar said “seizures don’t make you a liar,” reciting false statements Troyer made at the scene. He claimed his car was stolen, and then said he wasn’t the driver, even while trying to take documents from the car, Uyar said. Uyar told jurors that Troyer failed sobriety tests at the scene, and that he was warned by a doctor not to drive. Troyer remains in the Vista Detention Facility with no bail. — Neal Putnam
“Avoid paying a comission when selling your home” bout 40 La Jolla High School students gathered at the corner of Fay Avenue and Nautilus Street before morning classes on April 1 in support of the "Conquer the Cuts" fundraising campaign to raise community awareness and monetary donations for the school, which is being affected by the San Diego Unified School District’s budget cuts. early 200 special cars and an estimated 5,000 people descended on La Jolla on April 3 for the La Jolla Motor Car Classic, which will benefit the La Jolla Historical Society and the Monarch School. After the show, observers watched a parade of classic cars leaving La Jolla Cove's Ellen Browning Scripps Park (left). The event was the seventh year for the event, which usually takes place in January but was postponed until April to avoid rain. All kinds of automobiles and other things you can drive were on display, including an 1890 Clipper High Wheeler bicycle, a 1970 Volk-

swagen "Hippie Bus" (above), and a Sopwith Pup airplane, which required total disassembly for transportation to and from the event. Woodies, old-school motorbikes and British voom-vooms were also lined up, as well as German automobiles, the event’s spotlight group for this year. — Claire Harlin

BY JOSHUA LOWE | VILLAGE NEWS A whirlwind, a marathon, being shot out of a cannon. Take your pick of metaphors. This is Kristin Cleavinger's life right now, as she prepares to represent La Jolla at the Miss California Teen USA pageant in November. Cleavinger, a 17-year-old senior at Scripps Ranch High School, was selected in February to be the Miss Teen La Jolla contestant after being recruited from a talent agency near Los Angeles. It is expected she will be competing against as many as 50 other young women from all over the state. It's been a bit of blur, she said, dealing with recruiters, interviews, questionnaires, studying, bi-weekly phone conferences with pageant organizers and now finding sponsors to help her with everything from photos, to fashion to covering the $850 entrance fee. But the potential rewards are also great, Cleavinger said, not only in terms of scholarship money but also the chance to be the spokesperson for the Miss California Teen USA organization for a year. Not to mention, she will compete for the title of Miss Teen USA.
"This is my first pageant," she said. "I never saw myself as a pageant girl ... I am a theatrical performer, which is how I was drawn to this pageant." After receiving a notice about Miss California Teen from a talent agency, she met with a pageant recruiter. After some interviews and questionnaires, she was picked. "I got notification in February saying 'Congratulations Miss La Jolla Teen California 2012' and I was like, ‘Woo hoo!’” she said. “I was really excited." She said she is very pleased to be representing La Jolla, which is where she was born. "This is where all my community work is, and the people here — it's their work ethic, their morals,” she said. “They are inspirational to me. They are my role models." Cleavinger sits on the La Jolla Playhouse student board, is a core team member on St. Gregory the Great's youth leadership team and works with "Isabella's Giraffe Club," an organization that helps parents with infants in critical care or who have lost an infant. In January, she started working at the new Sprinkles Cupcakes at 8855 Villa La Jolla Drive. To get involved with her campaign, email her at Kristin.Cleav inger@ gmail.com, or visit her Facebook page at www.face book.com/Kristin for MissCaliTeen.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Understanding the SIO library’s significance Re: “Riptide of funding cuts may mean the end of Scripps library,” (March 24, Page 1. There cannot be a more short-sighted action destructive of the University of California, San Diego than closing the Scripps library. Thomas Carlyle said, "The true university … is a collection of books." Administrators, professors and students come and go. Is there a voice for the animals? The time is now to give these animals a voice and you are the people who can do this. As someone who loves animals, I have so enjoyed coming down to Casa Beach to have lunch and watch the harbor seals in the wild. I have such a hard time understanding why there are such selfish people who don’t care if they disturb them at pupping season and don’t want them there at all. There are few places left for these animals to haul out to rest, give birth or raise their young. We have taken over so much of the land or beaches where wild animals called home, and why there are people who can’t allow one beach for these wonderful animals is beyond my rational thinking. I personally believe the rope should stay up year-round and no one should
be allowed on the beach at anytime during pupping season. We need to have some respect for the seals too. I would like to thank the City Council and Mayor [Jerry Sanders] for helping change the wording of the 1931 Tidelands Grant allowing the ability to make a marine mammal park. I hope you are able to create this sanctuary permanently that would allow everyone to enjoy watching these incredible animals without disturbing them. I would also like to thank Judge Taylor for his Nov. 13 ruling dismissing the O’Sullivan case and vacating the order to dredge the beach. That was a victory for not only the seals but for all of us who love these animals. The creation of the park rests in the hands of the City Council. Shared use must be re-examined as a policy due to the conflicts and disturbance to the seals. Let’s make this one beach the beach for the seals and finally end this conflict. I urge each of you to stand your ground with these ridiculous people and create Casa Beach Marine Mammal Park as a world-class tourist destination. This would benefit the city and the seals. I thank you for all your past efforts and now ask that you please represent the majority of your constituents and others of whom want the seals to be protected. This is your city and it is time for you to stand up for the animals who can’t stand up for themselves.

Who let the wolves in? About two centuries ago, La Jolla was settled by a group of joyful people engaging in the arts. It wasn’t just the quaint cottages and shops they built that gave the Village its charisma. It was the people themselves who had unprecedented solidarity and camaraderie that gave the Village its unique character. Peace and love filled the air. Time brings changes. Who let the wolves in? Nowcomers who harbored malice and hostility came into the community. Let’s look at three examples: A man came who wanted to destroy the memorial cross on the hill. A sophomore student on our peaceful university campus started a riot because she hated Newt Gingrich, whom the UC San Diego president asked to address the graduating class. Discord divided the campus. Another more recent incident is the throwing of the ball into the seal rookery where seal pups were being born. The act flushed the seals into the ocean. Newly born pups are not able to survive in water. These are just three incidents. There are others. What could have been the outcome of the incidents? The man who wanted to tear down the cross has died. The student two hated the graduation speaker would well be an operations officer in Afghanistan. The person to wanted to kill the seals could possibly be made a docent in the Fish and Game Department. Patirica Weber La Jolla

BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS Firefighters successfully knocked down a large house fire that erupted near Mount Soledad around 2 p.m. on March 31. But officials said although most of the home was saved, owners still suffered about $4.5 million in damages. A man was working on a classic car in the garage of his two-story home at 1195 Van Nuys St., when gasoline vapors flowed over to a gasfueled water heater. The pilot light of the heater, which was not properly elevated off the floor, ignited the vapors and started a blaze that took over both the garage and upstairs bedroom, officials said. Building-code specifications require such heaters to be elevated. The man was able to escape without injury, and witnesses said he evacuated the house with a dog, which was not hurt. Some children nearby said they heard the explosion. Dozens lined up outside the home to observe the incident. The fire began migrating throughout the home quickly, but San Diego firefighters were able to extinguish it within about 15 minutes, officials said. The fire, which officials have

A Malashock experience If you haven’t heard about the remarkable things La Jollan John Malashock is doing at his dance company in Point Loma, you likely will after the April 8 opening of his next production, “The Floating World.” His inspiration is powered by both music and set design, and his style of dance evokes not only the type of excitement one may get from an acrobatic routine, but also the level of emotion triggered by a picturesque ballet. Words can hardly describe Malaschock’s style — he clearly has a category of his own. Tickets are available at http://www.malashockdance .org for opening night, which kicks off at the San Diego Museum of Art downtown. There will also be performances at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on April 9, 10, 16, 17 and 23. There will be artist forums after the 2 p.m. per-

MUSTGO Women’s film fest On Thursday, April 14, the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla will host “LUNAFEST: Short Films By, For, About Women.” The festival is dedicated to promoting awareness about women's issues, highlighting women filmmakers and bringing women together. Put on by LUNA health food bars and Girls on the Run,
formances on April 10 and 23, and a discussion panel with Malashock will be held at 3:30 p.m. on April 16. Envisioned as the story of a contemporary dance company on tour, The Floating World portrays what happens both on and off the stage — “what happens to dancers bodies, to their relationships with each other and what, emotionally, goes into creating the illusion of beauty and pleasure in an art form that is lighter-than-air,” states the performance’s description. The audience will observe the dancers in the exciting throes of performance — “in pain after the show, contending with challenging rehearsals in the dance studio, bickering backstage in the wings, enduring countless receptions and well-meaning speeches, blowing off steam in the night clubs, endlessly waiting for the next performance and confined in their lonely, generic hotel rooms.” — Claire Harlin

CONTINUED FROM Page 1 usually good things and when I talk people should listen to me because it’s usually something people need to hear or valuable information,” Malina said. Although they are both starters on a team that went all the way to the state semifinals, Maya has garnered more attention for averaging an eye-popping 18.7 points per game to go along with a team-high 11.9 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game. “Maya is an absolutely incredible leader. Her work ethic is off the charts,” said LJCD head coach Terri Bamford said. “She plays hard on every possession. The team respects her. She has that intangible you can’t coach — that will to win.” While it can’t always be easy to read about her sister’s talents in the papers, Malina has worked hard to mold herself into a premier player in her own right. She was the third leading scorer for the Torreys, averaging 10.2 points to go with 7.3 rebounds and a team-best 1.3 blocks per game. “Sometimes it’s hard because she’s always in the paper and whatnot for scoring points and I don’t score as much, but I usually just focus on defense. That’s what I want to be best at,” Mali-
na said. “I don’t really try to compare myself to her because I am my own person and completely different.” A major reason LJCD went on to a 27-5 record while often dominating the competition can be attributed to the talent the Hood sisters bring to the table. Only juniors this year, they still have one more season left. “When you get those two on the court together it’s really tough to beat us,” Bamford said. “I’ve got one more year with them and then I’m going to miss them. Wow.” While many siblings have a tendency to compete against each other, the Hoods’ parents, Alan and Karen, have maintained an equal atmosphere at home. In fact, they help each other work on their weaknesses and push each other to be better. “As parents, we never treated them any different or compared them to this one or that one,” Karen Hood said. “God made them the way they are and they’re both different people. Some people try to compare and make it a competition, but we have raised these girls to be individuals.” Both sisters would like to continue playing basketball once their high school careers end. They aren’t sure which colleges they want to go to, but they would like to stay relatively close to home.

Normally, finishing fifth in a crew race is not a time for cheers. But for the University of California, San Diego, it meant it wasn't far off from fast company at the April 3 Crew Classic Copley Cup finals. The Tritons’ performance on Mission Bay made them the first San Diego boat to make it to the grand final in the 38
years the races have been run. For a school seeking a jump from Division 2 to Division 1, this was huge. As expected, perennial favorites University of California, Berkeley (5 minutes, 45.9 seconds) and Stanford (5:57.75) finished 1-2, followed by Michigan and Oregon State. UCSD mens’ first-day qualifying time was 6:01.57.
To become one of the nation’s top 20 teams, coach Zach Johnson said you need a good recruiting program and a school that attracts fine students. “And we have that,” he said. “I think we’re on a par with Cal, Stanford and Columbia academically, and what better place to live than in San Diego.” — Johnny McDonald

‘I yam what I yam,’ said the sea cucumber
To understand how the host-crab relationship could be problematic for the host, one only need look at the slim opening of the sea cucumber's relatively rigid anus and compare it to the crab within. Ouch! ©2011 Judith Lea Garfield
BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD | VILLAGE NEWS ecause the world under water does not conform to the world above the waterline, we humans try to make connections no matter how ludicrous. For example, a sea cucumber is not a garden variety vegetable because it is an animal. Further, one variety of sea cucumber is called a sweet potato, though a tuber it is not. The sea cucumber Caudina arenicola

came upon its sweet nickname because its shape and coloration resemble the Thanksgiving dinner staple. Recently, I came upon a bounty of these invertebrates in the La Jolla Ecological Reserve’s submarine canyon. With smooth, shiny, mottled-orange skin, the plump relation to sea stars and sea urchins lacks tube feet — but not mobility. Using its muscular body, it can inch along, though it won't win any races, even against a garden snail. And despite a dearth of protruding sensory tentacles, the potato has no problem finding food as it ingests massive amounts of sand, which are passed through the digestive tract on a continual basis. Like separating the wheat from the chaff, nutritious particles like diatoms are sieved and digested. So, despite the quantity, not quality, strategy, it can still be said that the animal is a
picky eater. In fact, sand accounts for most of the weight and bulk. Remove the sand, and the chubby cucumber deflates like a balloon. Aside from the load of sand particles, the sweet potato is typically host to a foreigner within its walls. A symbiotic pea crab enjoys a commensal relationship with its host cucumber, meaning that the crab benefits while the host reaps zilch. Though not considered parasitic (the crab comes and goes as it pleases), the potato isn’t always unharmed because the pea crab must enter and exit the “safe house” through the host’s narrow rectum, which is found at the end of a slender, siphonlike "tail." A disconcerting visual to be sure. Adding to the dicey maneuver, the opening is not especially elastic, because tiny bones are embedded in the skin. That the bones are fused make for a relatively rigid opening, and as a result, a crab forcing its way in may damage or kill the sea cucumber. Fortunately, the host isn't a flophouse because only one sexually mature crab holes up at any given time. Considering the host's risk without benefit, it’s understandable why the cucumber acts to thwart a crab from entering. The potato either blocks entry by digging its tail end into the sediment or tries to dis-
lodge the crab by sticking out the rear end and shaking it from side to side. Sometimes the sweet potato is successful. Otherwise, the pea crab makes a beeline for the intestine to help itself to a meal painstakingly collected and digested by the host. For the pea crab, the end truly justifies the means. Another symbiont, a tiny, eulimid snail sequestered in a pointy white shell, is not as benign as the pea crab. The minute-sized tyrant takes up residence on the sweet potato's smooth surface by drilling its noselike organ through the rubbery skin, then siphoning off the host's nutritious body fluids. Once the snail attaches, it is a permanent arrangement. The life of a sea cucumber that is a sweet potato is spent in sediment familiar to the plantings of its terrestrial alter egos. Though there are differences in environment (under water or topside) and being animal or vegetable, common ground exists. All are periodically plagued by snails and insect pests (insects and crabs are arthropods). Thus, it is fitting (not necessarily for the pea crab) that humans look to for ways to connect our air and water relations because in the end (not only for the pea crab), all of us are citizens of the same planet. — Judith Lea Garfield, biologist and underwater photographer, has authored two natural history books about the underwater park off La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores.
Science a spotlight of Clinton conference in La Jolla BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS What’s at the top of Bill Clinton’s list of environmental issues facing the world? The manifestations of climate change. So said the former U.S. president in his visit to the University of California, San Diego from April 1 to 3 for a conference of the Clinton Global Initiative, an effort of the Clinton Foundation he founded in 2005. Thousands attended the event at UCSD, which also brought in familiar faces like singer Mandy Moore, actress Drew Barrymore and actor Sean Penn. The thought behind the initiative, Clinton said, is to “turn ideas into action.” He has also held conferences at universities in New Orleans, Texas and Miami. He came to La Jolla, he said, because of UCSD’s academic prestige and proximity to Mexico, in addition to it’s track record for community service and Washington Monthly’s No. 1 ranking of UCSD as in government research expenditures.. “This is also our first time on the West Coast,” Clinton said. Environmental issues and financing higher education were highly discussed at an opening press conference April 2 at UCSD’s Price Center.
“Higher education is the key for us being successful. The decrease in graduates is a major problem with the cost of higher education,” Clinton said, adding that students must demand more courses that merge sciences such as biology and chemistry with modern social issues. For example, people should learn about the 99 percent of all humans’ genetic make-up that is identical, instead of worrying about the varying less-than-one percent that leads to issues of ethnic inequality. He also said he thinks the world will see major conflicts over water and food production shortages in the future. Natural disasters are also in the rise, he said, with payouts from insurance companies for losses tripling over the past decade. Clinton added that people needed to decentralize the provision of energy and change transportation methods to combat global warming. Clinton touched on the need for adherence to Kyoto requirements and glacial melting. “If the glacier melts,” he said, “will it block the Gulf Stream?” The conference focused on global issues based their importance, which the public ranked by vote on the initiative’s website. For voters, the top-ranking “commitment” was a project called “The School Fund” (www.theschoolfund.org). Devel-

Music lovers, fusion at the Riford and a prestigious award Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas The mission of Mainly Mozart (MM) is to enrich the lives of today’s and tomorrow’s passionate music lovers by connecting them to the music of Mozart and the Masters, to world-class musicians, and to each other. MM’s concerts and festivals (like their Spotlight Series, which ran through February and March) take the music to the people. But to bring the musicians and music lovers together socially, MM held a Spotlight Series VIP luncheon at Piatti Ristorante and Bar (on La Jolla’s Avenida de la Playa) on March 24. There, they treated 45 of their VIP subscribers and patrons to a midday celebration of food and friendship. The event was held on Piatti’s patio in beautiful weather. Guests, musicians and top MM officials sipped wine and socialized before sitting down to a fine Italian lunch. A Caesar salad preceded a choice of five fabulous pasta dishes (it was difficult to choose just one …). Another tough decision involved three decadent desserts, but everyone managed somehow (couples, of course, shared each other’s selections). MM Artistic Director David Atherton and Executive Director Nancy Laturno Bojanic thanked guests for coming, and for their support. They introduced Spotlight Series featured artists Steven Copes, Anna Polonsky and Peter Wiley, and Board Chair Alexandra Pearson used the occasion to present her predecessor, Merle Fischlowitz, with a crystal gavel. Everyone clearly enjoyed MM’s generous gift of an opportunity to socialize and get to know each other better. ••• The esteemed order of Maitres Cuisiniers de France (Master Chefs of France, or MCF) has just 204 members. The newest is the well-known Chef Bernard Guillas, executive chef of the famed Marine Room. MCF members represent and promote French culinary art worldwide. “We are just 204, so I guess we’re an endangered species,” said Chef Bernard, who estimated that there are about 30 MCF members in North America. You must be “godfathered” to get in, he explained. His “godfathers” were the prestigious Pierre Chambrin (1990-94 White House chef) and Jean –Michel Bergougnoux (chef-proprietor of Manhattan’s L’Absinthe BrassiereRestaurant). They sent him an application, and although an answer normally takes years, he was approved in just 15 months. When they called him with the news, he thought it was a friend’s prank — and hung up. But on March 14, he was in Paris to be inducted at MCF’s 60th anniversary — and to see his French relatives for the first time in four years. The honor recognizes Bernard’s efforts to promote restaurants and culinary art locally, nationally, and internationally. “Flying Pans,” which he authored with Marine Room Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver, is
among the top three cookbooks in America, and his support of charitable causes is legendary. The American Institute of Wine and Food celebrated the prestigious honor with a festive reception at Sally and John Thornton’s Point Loma home. Wines came from the Thornton’s own winery, and Ron Oliver prepared amazing hors d’oeuvres from their cookbook’s recipes. Bernard called the whole affair “The most wonderful thing that has happened to me in San Diego.” When the chef ’s iPhone rang during our interview, a picture of a big green frog appeared on its display. That, he later revealed, meant the call was from Paris… ••• La Jolla’s Riford Center continues to grow and improve. Its façade and courtyard will be completely transformed in the coming months, and the bathrooms have already been remodeled. On March 27, they held “Art and Fashion Fusion,” one of their most successful events yet. It brought together 15 artists and designers, mostly from the greater San Diego area. Their paintings, sculptures, jewelry, couture, millinery, cosmetics, and other works were on display and available for sale. Guests enjoyed wines, hors d’oeuvres, and other refreshments, and a pair of musicians entertained in the courtyard. Event proceeds will benefit the Center’s many and varied programs and services.

SM
You prepared a Will, Power of Attorney and Advanced Health Care Directive for me a few years ago. I am in the process of purchasing a home, do I need to modify my documents in any way?
Question:
Congratulations on the purchase of your home! You will now need to create a Living Trust and hold title to your home in the Trust. In order to ensure your property passes to your family, to avoid estate taxes and probate, it is crucial you put Virginia Weber your property into a Trust. Upon creation of your Trust, a deed of your property will be recorded naming you, as Trustee of your Trust, as owner of the property. You may then give the property to whomever you chose through the Trust. You can also change the beneficiary of your Trust without changing the title on your home. I suggest any assets valued at over $5,000 be put into your Living Trust also. These assets may include bank accounts, Stocks, Bonds or other investments. A living trust will also provide for your minor children so they will not inherit all your property and assets when they are eighteen years old. The person you name as Trustee will pay for their education and support until they reach the age you specify in your trust. Another advantage of a living trust, is in the event that you are incapacitated, your trustee can take over your financial affairs and pay your bills. Now that you are a property owner, you will definitely need a Living Trust. Please call my office or your own attorney to schedule an appointment to draft a Living Revocable Trust for you.

Caring for a parent or spouse is an emotional subject which is likely the reason so many myths surround it. This article is designed to dispel some of these myths. It’s a must-read for anyone currently involved in care giving including those who are considering hiring or perhaps even becoming a caregiver. Adult Children No Longer Provide Care for Aging Parents at Home While stories of adult children abandoning their aging parents make for interesting reading, this is just not true. What is true is that families live further apart from one another than ever before and that situation sometimes presents caregiving challenges. Advances in communication make it easy for adult children and aging parents to stay in regular contact. Many children also care for their parents but the stress may be great. Most People Have a Plan in Place Before the Need Arises Not true. If you don’t yet have a caregiving plan, you’re definitely not alone. Most adult children do not tackle this issue until they are forced, meaning it doesn’t usually happen until a parent becomes ill, starts showing signs of the onset of agerelated conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, or until one aging parent dies and the other has trouble resuming life after the death of their spouse. Caregiver Resources are Insufficient This is not true. Caregiver resources are fragmented and sometimes difficult to comprehend or access. But they’re out there. New legislation regarding caregiving and care receiving is constantly being introduced an approved. Gay Men’s Chorus wants to ‘friend’ you this weekend BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE | VILLAGE NEWS Want to “friend” 120 men? Come to the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center this weekend. The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) and artistic director Gary Holt await your arrival with their spring concert titled “Friend me,” directed and choreographed by associate artist Joey Landwehr, who directs the J*Company. According to Holt, Act I celebrates the love and loyalty of great friends with such songs as Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida,” Jason Mraz’s “Song for a
Friend,” Destiny’s Child’s “Stand Up for Love” and the exuberant “I Just Wanna Dance” from “Jerry Springer: The Opera.” Act II comprises the West Coast premiere of Michael Shaieb’s 45minute theatrical musical “Through a Glass, Darkly,” which dramatizes 36 hours in the life of Sebastian (La Jolla Country Day teacher Caleb Goh), a young Wall Street executive who becomes addicted to crystal methamphetamine. He moves away from his long-term partner and back into the club scene, where he meets a younger man whom he introduces to
meth for the first time. Holt says both chorus members and the public have asked why he’s programmed such a piece. “Many think I’m crazy,” he said. “It’s easy to just do concerts that are fun and which the audience loves, but part of SDGMC’s mission is to do things that are socially relevant, and addiction is certainly one of them.” Having been affected by a friend’s addiction, Shaieb wrote “Through a Glass, Darkly” in 2008 on a commission from the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus. “We didn’t realize it was going to have such an effect on people,” Shaieb said. “Something has to make a cathartic change in somebody’s life, and sometimes music does that … It just hits them to their very core.” Holt said SDGMC has grappled with meth addiction. “We’ve had people who simply vanish after three weeks of rehearsal,” he said. “We don’t hear from them, can’t locate them.” This is exemplified in “Through a Glass, Darkly” by a section titled “Messages,” in which Sebastian avoids his answering machine because he fears hearing messages from his mother and his employer. “The piece is not preachy or judgmental,” Holt said. “I daresay it’s not even very hopeful. When you care for someone deeply you don’t always do things the right way the first time.” He said he believes Shaieb figured that out because in the final movement the protagonist’s partner, who was left behind, says, “If you could see what I see in you, that you are beautiful, you wouldn’t need to escape.” “It’s a magnificent piece of music,” Holt said, adding that it is scored to sound like modern club music.
UPCOMING SHOWS “Friend Me,” including “Through a Glass, Darkly,” will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April, 10, at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre, Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, 4126 Executive Drive. pet services K9 PHYSICAL THERAPY/REHAB CUTTING EDGE K9 REHAB www.cuttingedgek9.com We have Been Featured On Local And National News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
