LJ Parks and Beaches addresses track issues BY DAVE SCHWAB In March, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. heard from local residents displeased by a new La Jolla High School policy denying public access to school grounds and facilities during off-hours. Devin Kostrzewski, representing an ad hoc organization identified as La Jolla Track Interest Group, discussed recent problems with school access by the public. “We would like to raise awareness and support for keeping La Jolla High School's athletic facilities open to the public,” Kostrzewski told park planners at their March 27 meeting. “We have been trying to use the track and field La Jolla Shores beach as seen from above on La Jolla Village Drive.

The model takes into consideration sand transport both along the beach (due to longshore currents) and across the beach (cross-shore transport) by waves and sea-level rise. SoCal beaches may disappear by 2100 Using a computer model called “CoSMoS-COAST” (Coastal Storm Modeling System – Coastal One-line Assimilated Simulation Tool) scientists predict that with limited human intervention, 31 to 67 percent of Southern California beaches may become completely eroded by the year 2100 under scenarios of sea-level rise of one to two meters. “Beaches are perhaps the most iconic feature of California, and the potential for losing this identity is real,” said USGS geologist Patrick Barnard. “The effect of California losing its beaches is not just a matter of affecting the tourism economy. Losing the protecting swath of beach sand between us and the pounding surf exposes critical infrastructure, businesses and homes to damage. “Although a majority (72 per-

We have been repeatedly harassed and told to leave.” Kostrzewski noted San Diego Unified School District and the city have expressed a joint interest in “helping make more public park space out of public school facilities using their tracks and pickup fields.” LJPB board member Bill Robbins agreed, noting “there's a new partnership between the school district and the city to make more school playgrounds available in the city as parks.” Kostrzewski noted SDUSD has a policy that allows indi-

beaches are a complex mixture of dunes, bluffs, cliffs, estuaries, river mouths, and urban infrastructure, the model is applicable to virtually any coastal setting. Additionally, the model uses information about historical shoreline positions and how beaches change in response to waves and climate cycles such as El Niño, to improve estimates and improve confidence in long-term prediction of coastline changes in Southern California. Although shoreline change is very hard to predict, scientists are confident in the accuracy and reliability of the model’s predictive capability applied to the forecast period (2010-2100), because of how accurately the model is able to reproduce the historical shoreline change between 1995 and 2010.

SDUSD joins in challenge against executive order As President Trump threatens to retaliate against certain jurisdictions that refuse to coordinate with federal law enforcement to identify, surveil, detain and deport undocumented immigrants, education leaders across California have come together to send a strong message: “Leave our students and their families alone.” On Wednesday, March 22, representatives from the San Diego Unified School District, Sweetwater Union High School District, Southwestern Community College District and The San Diego Community College District held a press conference to announce their signing of an amicus

brief on behalf of schools and educators supporting Santa Clara County’s challenge to President Trump’s executive order targeting sanctuary jurisdictions. The school districts will also assert their commitment to protect their student’s civil rights, regardless of immigration status. On Jan. 25, the president issued an executive order that, among other things, allows the administration to cut federal funding to cities and perhaps other entities determined to be “sanctuary jurisdictions.”

The order is so vaguely worded that any jurisdiction, including school districts, can be found ineligible to receive federal funds for any number of ambiguous reasons. “No child in California should fear going to school because they or their families may be deported,” said Richard Barrera, president of the San Diego Unified School Board of Trustees. “Neither should school administrators be forced to choose between critical funding and violating students’ rights. “We believe that access to educa-

tion is a fundamental, non-negotiable right of every student in every San Diego school. Federal funding is not a fee for immigration enforcement services, but rather an investment in the potential of each child, an educated workforce, and strong future economy.” After the executive order was issued, the County of Santa Clara and the City of San Francisco filed lawsuits to block its implementation. When the ACLU filed a motion to intervene in the Santa Clara suit on behalf of the YMCA of Silicon Valley, the presiding judge invited others to file “friend of the court” briefs. To date, 25 school districts and other educational institutions have signed unto the amicus brief filed on

Butterfield talks in-depth about Nixon, Watergate at D.G. Wills Books BY BLAKE BUNCH It was on July 16, 1973 that deputy assistant to President Richard Nixon, Alexander Butterfield, was publicly asked the “$64 dollar question” by Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, “Are you aware of listening devices in the Oval Office?” “I was aware,” said Butterfield. “Yes, sir.” This was one of the heaviest bombshells to drop during the Watergate hearings, and perhaps in American history. The president was so paranoid that he taped every interaction, unbeknownst to even his most senior advisor on foreign affairs, Henry Kissinger. Although Butterfield had acknowledged the existence of audio taping in the Oval Office three days earlier in a private hearing, this was the first time this information was presented to the American public. “Alex” Butterfield now resides in La Jolla Shores. At 91 years of age, the man’s quick wit, inviting sense of humor, integrity and life experience is enough to fill several nonfiction works for years to come. He is currently pursuing his doctorate at UCSD, and jokes that he has been accused of “liking the title.” Previously having attended

UCLA, the University of Maryland (B.A.), and George Washington University (M.A.), Butterfield says of UCSD, “I was the oldest guy on campus.” He and former Washington Post journalist, now associate editor, Bob Woodward, have developed a close personal relationship since Watergate, albeit at times contentious, but always possessing a professional admiration. Butterfield collaborated with Woodward on his most recent work, “The Last of the President’s Men,” in which he provided Woodward with access to all of his pertinent personal files, as well as the first-hand experience and anecdotes from working with Nixon, and his testifying in the Watergate hearings. He will be speaking about his life, and the book, on Sunday, April 9 at 2 p.m. at D.G. Wills Books. Early career and military background Butterfield attended UCLA from 1946 to 1947. While enrolled at UCLA, his then-girlfriend was close friends with H.R. “Bob” Haldeman’s, which involved the two exchanging drinks and pleasantries at the girls’ sorority house. After this year, Butterfield dropped out, seemingly lacking a sense of direction that was

soon to be fulfilled. His father was a high-ranking officer in the Navy, and Butterfield spent time as a youth on Coronado. While searching for purpose, Butterfield decided he aimed to make a new career as a fighter pilot. Since he was accustomed to military life, he joined the Air Force in 1948 and learned how to fly in 1949. This would provide the foundation for his military career to follow. In 1951, he would quickly advance to a fighter-gunnery instructor and as a member of the Sky Blazer acrobatic jet fighter team. Keeping with his quick ascension up the jet fighter ladder, he was then placed in command of his own squadron in Okinawa, Japan. Butterfield flew 98 combat missions during Vietnam, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. During the late 60s, he was stationed in Australia. Although he wanted to get back to Vietnam due to boredom. On a trip to Papua New Guinea with Admiral Sharpe, he discovered, in a pidgin publication, The Wantok, that his old chum, Haldeman, was now a high-ranking advisor to the Nixon presidency transition. to find a way out of the military. He asked several of his colleagues for letters of recommendation, and his honorable release was in the works. Quick, slick entry into White House The Nixon transition team was working from the Pierre Hotel in New York, which is atypical of a presidency in transition. Butterfield was back in Washington, D.C., with a primary goal of setting up an interview with Haldeman. As mentioned previously, they were old friends, but had not spoken since UCLA. Butterfield reached out to Haldeman’s wife, Josephine, to get in

touch with her husband on his behalf. In typical fashion, Butterfield was able to secure the meeting with Haldeman, who was confused that he would want a cabinet position after such a distinguished military career. Growing up in a Republican family, Butterfield had voted for Nixon, and desperately wanted out of Australia. “Maybe this can be my out,” Butterfield said of his service in Australia. “By this point in my career, I had worked in fairly high levels of government. I had secured letters from Robert McNamara and several others, which were sent directly to the transition team.” READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Play with fire at the Grill at Torrey Pines BY BLAKE BUNCH “Has anyone at your job ever asked you if you’ve had a ‘case of the Mondays?’” If you answered with a hard “no,” then you must have worked in the food and beverage industry at some point in your life. While most revel in Friday and Saturday evenings, industry workers may view the weekend the same way most feel on Sunday afternoon about Monday morning. This being the case, Mondays for chefs, bartenders, servers, etc. are the oft-designated weekly day of revelry. It is in this spirit that The Grill at Torrey Pines is launching its new monthly dinner series, “Playing with Fire” on Monday, April 10. Executive chef Jeff Jackson is making his way out of the confines of his kitchen and inviting some of his chef buddies out for a cookout. Jackson, a pioneer in farm-to-table cooking in Southern California (and the entire U.S.), will be utilizing the practices he has honed so well over the years. Along with star local chefs Jason Knibb (Nine-Ten; April 10), Matt Gordon (Urban Solace, Solace and the Moonlight Lounge; May 8), and Trey Foshee (George’s, Galaxy Taco; June 12), they will be grilling up pristine proteins and vegetables utilizing Torrey Pines infamous chimney pit-

cooker/spit-roaster/oven. “Really, it’s just an excuse to have some of my chef friends in San Diego to come and grill out,” Jackson jokes. “We typically have Mondays off, so it is one of the only days we have to pursue other ventures. Fortunately, we have built a great culinary community in San Diego, and that’s why we ultimately wanted to celebrate it in this fashion. Our goal is to connect chefs, farmers, vineyards, and those who all make access to these wonderful ingredients available.” Jackson has been at The Grill at Torrey Pines since they opened their doors 15 years ago. Playing with Fire will be hosted on The Grill’s patio overlooking the Torrey Pines Golf Course, providing a fantastic backdrop of the afternoon sky. On the predesignated Monday, chef Jackson will partner with one of the aforementioned chefs, allowing them to come up with a menu of their own. He takes a proverbial backseat from his typical duties, purchasing the necessary ingredients for the menu, but also acts as a de-facto sous chef for his visiting colleagues. “This is a great reminder to all of us why we got into the business,” Jackson said. “To a chef, what is better than getting to play with fire? Luckily, I’ve been blessed to work at a location that I don’t see as working at a hotel... it feels like a big residence for

As aforementioned, the chefs will be utilizing the iconic pit-cooker/spit-roaster/oven customized chimney to cook all of the proteins and vegetables. The April 10 Playing with Fire event will set the tone for those to follow, beginning with a slow- roasted lamb and beer pairing. While the community at large is invited to the event, it should be noted that space for these dinners is rather limited. Each dinner will entail a set cost of $40 per person, which will include one signature cocktail and/or beer, as well as whatever these creative chefs pull out of their wheelhouse.

The Bishop’s School star softball pitcher, Shelby Maier, commits to UGA BY ED PIPER, JR. Shelby Maier, long and lanky at nearly six feet tall, is a virtuoso of sorts on the softball field and at the stove. The sophomore, who was Coastal League Pitcher of the Year as a freshman, prepares barbecue chicken just to her liking, and creates her own cheesecake. “She cooks all her own food,” says her dad, Joe, who is lingering nearby as his daughter is interviewed on the Bishop’s softball field prior to a big non-league matchup against Granite Hills. At the time of the reporter’s visit, her father points out, Maier is leading the county in strikeouts from the pitcher’s circle, as well as home runs at the plate. “I discovered the weight program (at Bishop’s) last year as a freshman,” says Shelby, who is named after the performance car. “It has helped a lot in my upper and lower body.” The curve (to right-handed batters) and drop (to left-handers) specialist throws in the mid-to-upper 60s. She showed in her outing against Granite Hills, at the time the number-two team in the county, that her pitch speed, from a scant 43 feet from the plate, requires a split-second decision on the part of batters. Maier, hounding the strike zone and pounding the lumber (actually, aluminum, but it sounded nice), is probably the tallest Lady Knight on

coach Art Schiele’s side of the diamond on the Hunte Fields on campus. Facing hitters, she looks a little like a caged animal, pumping intensity and anxious for the next pitch. She paces, trying to weather out the ride as Bishop’s, sporting a combination of travel ball stars like Livy Schiele, the Division III CIF Player of the Year last year in centerfield, and herself, along with classmates just in it for the school softball season and the camaraderie, takes some lumps from the high-ranked Eagles. Maier’s private pitching coach, Jason Iuli-Kinsey, is also an assistant of Schiele’s. Going through the Granite Hills batting order, Iuli-Kinsey is a constant presence next to the backstop, sitting on a barrel and flashing pitch calls to his catcher, freshman Jaya Travis. He has told his standout hurler the day before that, despite the talent of the opposing lineup, he is going to have Maier try out her changeup, which is her weakest pitch next to her curve and 12-to-6 drop, on a regular basis during the game. Already having mastered her speed pitches, the right-hander and her coach want to add the off-speed pitch to round out her repertoire. An intense competitor, Maier smiles and tries to slough it off after an Eagles batter slaps a changeup into right field in the opening frame. It’s not the pitch she would have called, but in a non-league game

this is the time to work on it. Meanwhile Dad, who with his daughter was the first arrival at the field two hours prior to game time, is tense, living every pitch. “She has to get through this,” he says when base runners get on again in the second. Pressure has been there ever since the young pitcher began to show Division 1 potential. The University of Georgia commit accepted a scholarship before her freshman season even began. Did that ease the tension? “For about four or five minutes,” says Joe. “Then they told her she has to continue to improve, and keep her grades up, or it could all go away.” Schiele, prior to the game, reveals that he may follow his own talented daughter, the Lady Knights’ leadoff hitter, who hit the ball for a 0.611 batting average last year, to watch her play at the University of Auburn next year. She was named to the AllCIF First Team last year. “I haven’t fully decided if I’m staying” after this season, said the fifth-year coach. I brought in Jason to take over the program (whenever I leave). Then I can just enjoy watching my daughter play.” The Lady Knights’ arsenal also includes third baseman Halle Coleman, a junior and one of the team captains; shortstop Alex-Rose Molinar, a freshman committed to play softball at Boston University; and Travis. For Maier, playing with her classmates is a break from the high-

stakes pressure and competition of travel ball. “I found it’s a time when I can just play the game just the way it was meant to be.” “Funsie,” her dad chimes in. “For fun,” she continues “to play with my classmates.” “There is more of a sense of togetherness than competing for a spot” on her school team, she says. Still, the Lady Knights have won the Coastal League the past three years, all three of Livy Schiele’s high school career. In the Granite Hills game, Maier and her teammates kept the Eagles from scoring after the early innings. Then, in extra innings, Schiele delivered the game-

winning walk off hit. When she’s not pitching, Shelby enjoys playing first base, though with the school team’s makeup, sometimes she has to defer. “I like playing on the field, able to cheer on our pitcher,” she says. “I feel like more of a supporter that way.” When hitting, “It’s a frame of mind,” she says. “Just try to hit the ball as hard as I can. This power I’ve had so far—it’s a new thing.” She committed to the University of Georgia last school year. “I just really like the campus and the ranches nearby,” she says. “I’m into the rolling pasture and silence.”

All about the trees “It’s a bird, it’s a plane… It’s a helicopter, lifting a tree.” Greg Barnes, a UC Neighborhood Watch captain, witnessed the moving of the trees at Westfield UTC Shopping Center. He provided an explanation that “They are moving trees that had been preserved when they tore up the parking lots and took down buildings. Rather than put them on a flatbed, where they would have to be put on their side (and possible damage) and where it would be hard to get them into some of the places they are to go, they are using the helicopter to pick them straight up and lower them to the exact spot

in the new construction.” A total of 16 full-grown trees were airlifted into Westfield UTC from nurseries throughout the United States to line the walkways in the new development. Among those trees, were several olive and coral trees. Later this year various palm trees will be brought into the new development as well. Easter fun Families (especially the little ones) can enjoy Easter activities around UC, including two Easter egg hunts. The Standley Rec Center Spring Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon, for children ages one to 10, at Standley

Park. There will be face painting, arts/crafts, egg coloring, jumpies, and more. Of course, there will be a visit by the Spring Bunny. Please bring your own basket to collect the eggs for fifth grade. The University City United Church will be having the Easter Bunny holding court on Saturday, April 15. The church will be holding a free Easter fair from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with an Easter egg hunt taking place at 10 a.m. There will be traditional games, snacks and crafts, and children can also have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny.

Lifestyle Who is at the top? ‘On our way, but not there yet’ Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, of the 535 seats in Congress, women occupy 104. Women represent a quarter of the state legislators, 12 percent of state governors, and 18.4 percent of mayors. Of the Standard and Poor Fortune 500 companies, women hold less than a third of executive and senior level positions, one-fifth of all board seats, and are only 5 percent of all CEOs—yet women earn 57 percent of the bachelor’s degrees, 59.9 percent of the masters’ degrees, and 51.8 percent of the doctorates, according to the 2016 National Center for Education Statistics. In 2016, the InterParliamentary Union found that these disparities are not true only in the U.S. Across the globe, women hold less than a quarter of senior-level positions and onethird of businesses have no women at all in senior management. There are, of course, many reasons for these statistics. Let’s examine a few.

Close your eyes and picture this: A professor is coming down the hall of a university. Who do you see? Now envision a doctor coming into a patient’s hospital room. Who do you see? There is a large desk in a corporate office. Who is behind it? If your first reaction was to envision men, that is, in fact, the problem. When people are asked to name attributes of a good man, a good woman, and a good leader, the man and the leader share similar attributes, not the woman. Managers are associated with masculine traits. This is a conceptual problem. People tend to trust those most like themselves, people whose view of the world and whose behaviors are familiar. Since most of the decision-makers are still men, they will tend to trust and like other men, which puts women at risk for not being selected to lead. These attitudes lead, in turn, to a pipeline problem: there is a scarcity of women in mid-level positions to go on to fill senior leadership roles, and many of the women who are mid-level managers do not continue on to senior levels. Each gender has different tendencies regarding not just which people fit into which role, but also

how to view the world and the work which needs to be done. Many men (not all) have a propensity to see the world in terms of the rights of others; for them, it is about justice, competition, and power. Many women (again, not all) see the world in terms of the needs of others. They respond using cooperation, bridging, and relationships. This is one of the reasons it is difficult for men and women to walk in each other’s shoes. This relates to an important contributor to the lack of women in power positions, which is not being addressed and cannot be unless there are major changes in corporate structure. Many women are mothers and have difficulty leaving their babies and children in the care of others or are judged harshly if they do. (While fathers, largely, do not feel this.) Some women have opted out of the work force, preferring to take care of their families. Some have interrupted their careers to stay home with infants. So men have a smoother path to promotion; they don’t feel ambivalence about choosing career over family. When we have cribs and provide childcare in offices, when fathers go

Fashion files: Celebrating SD’s global community at LJ International Film Festival Fashion Files Diana Cavagnaro

The La Jolla International Fashion Film Festival (LJIFF) is gearing up for its eighth year starting on July 20 to 22. In the past, this annual event has been held at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCASD). Since it is under renovation and expansion for the next two years, the festival will be moving to a new location at the Mandeville Auditorium. Attendance has accelerated each year and the festival producer, Fred Sweet, said they already have 1,300 reservations on the books. Although this event is by invitation only, there will be many free events and opportunities where La Jollans can come and be part of in this global community. One, in particular, is the red carpet event, which is held in the late afternoon and evening on Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22. This provides a chance to come and see all the stars and celebrities make their grand entrance. In the past, some of the celebrities have included Sue Wong, Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, Zandra Rhodes, and Bruno Aveilaan. Another opportunity for the community involves the after parties on Friday and Saturday night between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. These parties will be hosted at The Lot, a fitting locale for these ultra-chic gatherings. The Lot is open to the public, so

this is a great chance to come and mix and mingle with everyone. You will be able to see actors and actresses in their costumes from the films and meet the filmmakers who have come here from all around the world. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a no-pass matinee for public attendance. This is unique way to view some of these rare fashion films. For those who come to the matinee, it is a perfect time to hang around after the filming and stay for a viewing of the red carpet. Don’t forget to bring your cameras. This year I was asked to have many of my hats in the filming of “Habana 3 AM.” This will be the world premiere of the highfashion film that features the famous fictional actor Max Vogue. He has been knocked unconscious and travels through a Lewis Carroll world where he meets his icons and divas such as Maria Felix, Salvador Dali, Elsa Schiaparelli, Ernest Hemingway, and Josephine Baker. Antonio Contreras, who is the mastermind behind the Max Vogue character, is also a sensational artist and has made “Loteria cards” for all the cast and crewmembers of “Habana 3AM.” The official poster for the film is made from all these innovative “Loteria cards.” Contreras has also created a weekly comic series with the character Max Vogue. It is an ingenious concept where Max Vogue is pictured as a brilliant time-traveling fashion detective who can be moody and angst-ridden at times. This ongoing weekly series is distributed by LJIFFF through La Jolla’s global weekly updates and

festival experiences. Contreras’ innovative artwork may be viewed at the Art Installation on Thursday, July 20, and will also be held at The Lot. This global community is growing by leaps and bounds with more fashion people joining forces and awesome Internet collaborations. Fred Sweet said that the festival even had romantic team-ups that have lead to marriages. To keep abreast with Max Vogue’s adventures, or receive the latest festival news, visit www.LJIFFF.com. Upcoming Events Friday, April 28 The 24th annual Hats Off to San Diego will be at the Estancia Hotel and Spa at 10:30 p.m. This luncheon and Betty Mabee Hat Parade is presented by The Gold Diggers (Gifts Of Loving Donors). For more information, call Jackie Bailey at 619-670-3643. Billie Holiday and Max Vogue comic series created by Antonio Contreras.

Sunday, April 30 The seventh annual Bags and Baubles will be presented at a private Rancho Santa Fe Estate from 1 p.m to 5 p.m. (address will be supplied upon registration). This silent auction fundraiser goes to FACE, who provides life-saving veterinary care for local pets. For more information, visit www.face4pets.org. San Diego Community Newspaper Group teams up with National Multiple Sclerosis Society for Walk MS event The San Diego Community Newspaper Group, publishers of the Beach & Bay Press, Peninsula Beacon, La Jolla Village News and sdnews.com, have partnered with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in San Diego in support of the San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS, a fundraising walk, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 8 at NTC Park at Liberty Station, 2455 Cushing Road, in Point Loma. National MS Society officials expect about 4,500 people will walk and help raise about $462,000 for MS research program and services for people with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. The three-mile walk along San Diego Bay is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. Admission is free to attend Walk MS. There is no cost to be a walker. On-site registration is available. Event information is available at www.walkMS.org. San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) is returning as title sponsor of Walk MS at NTC Park. SDCCU has supported the National MS Society’s Walk MS for the past 19 years, and has served as title sponsor since 2002. Over the years, SDCCU’s sponsorship support for Walk MS has exceeded $1 million, according to the National MS Society. Presenting sponsors of the 2017 San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS include NBC 7 San Diego, KyXy 96.5, Energy 103.7 and Sycuan Casino. Other sponsors include StemGenex, Biogen, Sanofi Genzyme, Ability Magazine, San Diego Business Journal, KPBS and Langers Juice. The National MS Society’s national Walk MS sponsor is Genentech. Now in its 27th year in San Diego, Walk MS is known for drawing a large number of teams representing businesses, neighborhoods, clubs, community groups, churches and family members and friends of a person with MS. Many teams come up with a team name and outfit their members with costumes, including T-shirts, hats or balloons. All it takes is four or more people

to form a team. Free snacks and beverages will be provided to walkers, plus live music and a festive finish line celebration. Walkers will have the opportunity to earn prizes, including T-shirts, movie tickets and gift cards, based on the amount of donations they collect. Last year, the San Diego County Credit Union Walk MS at NTC Park drew about 4,500 walkers and volunteers and raised nearly $400,000 in donations. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter serves more than 51,500 people affected by MS living in San Diego, Orange and Imperial counties, as well as the Hawaiian islands. MS, the most common neurological disease leading to disability in young adults, is typically diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, although an estimated 8,000-to-10,000 children under the age of 18 also live with MS. Two to three times more women than men have been diagnosed with MS. An estimated 2.3 million people live with MS worldwide.

MS symptoms can range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis, as well as blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue and cognitive deficits. Symptoms might be permanent, or they might come and go. By eating away at the coating that allows nerve cells to transmit messages, MS can lead to restrictive or awkward movements and mental gaps, among other problems. Studies indicate that genetic factors may make certain individuals more susceptible to the disease, but there is no evidence that MS is directly inherited.

San Diego theater review: ‘Big Fish’ SD actors, and more BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE Maier returns in ‘Big Fish’ Fans of performer Brandon Joel Maier, who holds a BA in theater from SDSU, extolled in a recent, ecstatic announcement that he will return to the San Diego stage June 9 as Edward Bloom in Lamb’s Players production of “Big Fish: the Musical.” Not only that, Maier will costar with one of his closest friends, Kelsey Venter, who played Fantine to his Jean Valjean in Lamb’s 2014 production of “Les Miserables,” and with whom he has been featured in numerous shows but never paired romantically with onstage. The extraordinary “Big Fish” will be directed by Lamb’s associate artistic director, Deborah Gilmour Smyth. Maier was seen most recently at Lamb’s in “Les Miserables” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” For more information, visit www.lambsplayers.org or call 619-437-6000. Four San Diego actors Opening in previews on April 12 (and playing through May 7) North Coast Repertory Theatre artistic director David Ellenstein will stage Giles Havergal’s adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel, “Travels With My Aunt.” Ellenstein features four popular San Diego actors in the play’s 20 roles, among them Aunt Augusta and her fussy, gray flannel nephew, a retired banker whom she removes from his staid existence. The aforementioned actors are Richard Baird, Benjamin Cole, David McBean and James Saba. For more information, visit www.northcoastrep.org or call 858-481-1055. Sonnenberg makes Old Globe debut Moxie Theatre executive artistic director, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, who staged this year’s La Jolla Playhouse POP educational tour (it was seen by more than 20,000 school students in the San Diego area) will make her Old Globe Theatre directing debut with the West Coast premiere of Dominique Morisseau’s “Skeleton Crew.” The play, which concerns a close-knit bunch of factory line workers, opens in previews April 8 in the Cheryl and Harvey White Theatre at the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.
