Silver Ship soars on New owner modernizes eccentric home with a flair for minimalism

BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla will have a new hospital in six years focused on cancer treatment, women and infants, and advanced surgery. The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) announced April 1 that it plans to build the 10story-high Jacobs Medical Center next to its Thornton Hospital on the UCSD campus at a price of $664 million. The hospital will provide 245 patient beds. “Statistics tell us that with the aging population, San Diego will need 750 more beds by 2020,” said Debra Kain, spokeswoman for UCSD Health Sciences. The Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center is also slated to open in La Jolla next spring. In the six-year transition, UCSD will move its delivery and neonatal intensive-care unit from its Hillcrest medical center to La Jolla, Kain said. Instead of growing its inpatient services in Hillcrest, UCSD plans to reduce its number of beds by about 30 at its Hillcrest medical center by 2016, Kain said. Kain said UCSD is still committed to serving the downtown region at least through 2030. “We’re dedicated to staying in Hillcrest,” Kain said. “We’ve already invested $80 million, much of that is in seismic renovations.” But Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps Health, said La Jolla doesn’t need another hospital. ”La Jolla doesn’t need any more beds,” Van Gorder said. “This is not a growing community.” Van Gorder criticized UCSD for moving services out of the downtown region — where it serves more of the underinsured and uninsured — to a wealthy neighborhood. “They’re doing it for money, it’s as simple as that,” Van Gorder said. “… The problem is that it leaves a burden to Scripps and Sharp in the downtown area and South Bay.” Van Gorder believes legislators haven’t criticized UCSD for moving services out of Hillcrest because it’s

Ted Spyropoulos wasn’t in the market to buy a house in 2006 when a realtor offered to show him the unusual curvilinear house with its half-circle carport perched high above Nautilus Avenue. Spyropoulos quickly traded in his studio in the Shores to buy the house for $700,000. He spent the next two years working with contractors and artists to reinvent the property. “I didn’t know what the colors and materials would be immediately,” Spyropoulos said. “I just knew I could make it new again.” Spyropoulos is a painter by trade who specializes in painting metals and plastics to look like woodgrain and antiques. LJCPA denies permit for sidewalk cafe BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS Plans for the shuttered Bistro 101 restaurant at 909 Prospect St. are emerging but the permits needed for the sidewalk café have put a dent in the process. Businessman Oved Haskal plans to open a sidewalk café called Aroma Bakery and a restaurant called Barfly in the large space that was once home to Hard Rock Cafe. Haskal described Barfly as a Cheesecake Factory-type restaurant with an extended menu serving Italian and Middle Eastern food. The problem is that Haskal’s sidewalk café wouldn’t leave eight feet of sidewalk as required by the La Jolla Planned District Ordinance (PDO) — the Village’s guide to development. Trustees of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) seemed to like the sidewalk café but didn’t want to

undermine the PDO by favoring an individual project. It would set a bad precedent for the future, indicated trustee David Little. The LJCPA voted 12-3-1 to reject the project at the April 1 meeting. A city hearing officer will take the LJCPA vote into consideration when deciding on the project. “How do we want La Jolla to look in the future?” asked trustee Rob Whittemore. “Do we want pedestrian-friendly establishments with room to move on the sidewalk? … The people who wrote the PDO gave it a lot of thought and I’d defer to their judgment.” The city municipal code only requires a six-foot sidewalk but trustees indicated the PDO supersedes the municipal code. Haskal was furious. He said there are plenty of sidewalk cafes operating in the Village without leaving eight feet of sidewalk to pedestrians.

My mother was a refugee from Germany. It’s personally very meaningful for me.” Mayor Jerry Sanders will declare April 11 Holocaust Remembrance and Liberation Day. A short film will screen interviews with three local survivors and military liberators. Two of the survivors will attend the ceremony. “It’s really very educational for younger people to meet some of the survivors,” Haney said. “They read about this in history books and learn about it in films but when they meet people who lived through it, it makes it much more real.” Nine candles will be lit during the ceremony. Twelve San Diego survivors will light the first six candles in pairs to remember the six Nazi concentration camps. The seventh candle will be lit in remembrance of the 1.5 million Jewish children killed during the Holocaust. The eighth candle will commemorate the 5 million non-Jewish people killed in the death camps. University City resident Abraham Horstein, a 92-year-old World

LJCPA critical of 3-story Whitney project BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS The character of Avenida de la Playa could change significantly if the city approves a three-story building called the Whitney project, argued trustees of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) during their April 1 meeting. “If approved, the bulk and scale of the substantially-larger Whitney mixed-use project will be incompatible with surrounding development and would substantially alter the existing character of the area,” said LJCPA trustee and architect Phil Merten. Property owner Bob Whitney has submitted plans to the city to demolish two one-story buildings — home to La Jolla Kayak and a vacation rental at 2202 and 2206 Avenida de la Playa — to construct a three-story building with commercial space on the ground floor, two apartments above and an underground parking lot. The footprint of the Whitney building, referred to as the floor area ratio, exceeds the largest building footprint in the Shores by 37 percent, Merten indicated. The trustees believe the project’s envi-

ronmental document — the draft mitigated negative declaration (MND) — is false because they say it wrongly states the project conforms to the aesthetics and character of the Shores in its bulk, scale, materials and scale. The LJCPA has called on the city’s Development Services Department to rewrite the draft MND to reflect inconsistencies of the project with the Shores’ design guidelines. “The proposed design violates every tenet of the La Jolla Shores Planned District Ordinance and La Jolla Shores Design Manual regarding ‘bulk and scale,’” states a letter

from the LJCPA to the city. The La Jolla Shores Advisory Board will make a recommendation on the Whitney project on Tuesday, April 20. A hearing officer will ultimately decide on the project, possibly in May, and the decision is appealable to the Planning Commission. Meanwhile, the community is attempting to rewrite the Shores’ manual for development — known as the La Jolla Shores Planned District Ordinance (LJSPDO) — to make the document more specific. The “Visions” Committee for the LJSPDO met Wednesday, April 7.

Talking to an Elder with Dementia If you know someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, you know how difficult it can be to communicate with them. Dementia affects the brain, but the person still has their humanness, and still has a mind, an ego and feelings that should be respected. It seems cruel to force a person with dementia to accept aspects of reality that they cannot comprehend. The main coping skills you’ll need to improve communication with your loved one are redirection and validation. People with dementia sometimes display behaviors that seem out of character or are far too emotional for a specific situation. Redirection diverts their attention away from the stressful even to something more pleasant. This technique and its usefulness depend on what seems sensible in the situation. Be creative and experiment to see what works and what doesn’t with your loved one. Validation therapy tries to understand why your loved one is behaving a certain way and then you address the trigger or underlying concern. Allowing the dementia patient some measure of control will aid in self-worth and will reduce the occurrence of negative behaviors. The RN Case Managers at Innovative Healthcare Consultants are experienced in dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia issues and would be happy to discuss your areas of concern. OB ITUARY

James Patrick Kiely (1924-2010) Jim Kiely, a much-loved physician, passed away peacefully on March 27 at the age of 85. Jim, and his twin brother, Joe Kiely, M.D., were born in Chicago on Oct. 24, 1924. They were the youngest of a band of five brothers, including Jack, Billy and George. Jim was involved as a singer and dancer at St. Ignatius Grade School in Chicago, but gave up thoughts of show business at an early age and directed his energies toward becoming a doctor, as did Joe. Jim’s ambition was rewarded and he graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1947. A year following medical school graduation he married Miriam Coonan, known to all as Irish. After a few years of post-graduate training, the Korean War began and Dr. Jim went into the Army Medical Corps, serving in Korea and Japan. Upon completion of his time in the service, he returned to the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minn., and completed a fellowship in internal medicine. Seeking to warm up after eight years of freezing in Chicago, Minnesota and Korea, he came to sunny La Jolla in 1955. There, he joined Fred de la Vega, another Mayo Clinic-trained physician in the practice of internal medicine. Jim practiced in La Jolla for 48 years. He was on the staff of Scripps Memorial Hospital during that time, and, in 1969, served as chief-of-staff. His caring, warm attitude and never-failing humor made him a beloved doctor and friend to thousands of patients. Jim and Irish raised four children in La Jolla. Jim loved his Irish heritage and we’re sure that, at this time, he’s sitting at the side of St. Patrick. He felt so honored when he was made a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, and he and Lady Irish proudly attended many functions together. After decades of suppression, the theatrical bug began to re-emerge. Music and dancing became an important part of Jim’s life. Parishioners at Stella Maris were amazed to see their white-coated doctor don a tutu and dance like an energized Pavlova. Jim sang for years, and loved performing with the Soledad Singers.

In the mid-1960s, Jim became part of the slightly mad trio of doctors who wrote and performed in more than 10 medically-oriented comedy sketches. They performed regularly for Scripps Hospital parties, and then became a regular feature in the La Jolla Village Vaudeville. The group entertained together at medical meetings all over the West for more than 30 years. Jim starred in many James Patrick Kiely roles, from the misshaped Sadie Toolittle in “My Square Sadie” to Sir I Gotta Lunchalot, the most famous knight in all of France in “Cramalot.” He was a bumble bee and a Royal Canadian Mounted Police papoose. But who can ever forget him as Louie Prima, the leaping, twirling dancer in “Old Black Magic.” He made thousands of people laugh and love him. In 1990, Irish passed and Jim had to deal with the loss of his eldest son. Several years later, Jim met, loved and married Rosemary Cincotta of La Jolla. Music and dancing became a big part of their lives. Their home became a wonderful gathering place for their friends and family. Doctor Jim is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his brother, Joe; his three children, Maureen, Dan and Terry; and grandchildren, Kellen, Galen, Dylan and Benjamin. Rosemary’s children, Kevin, Brian, Terry, Erin and Sean; and her grandchildren all grew to know and love Jim. May you dance your way across the heavenly stairs Jimmy. You will be in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to San Diego Hospice and San Diego Alzheimer’s Association. Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, April 15 at 4 p.m. at Mary Star of the Sea church on Girard Avenue in La Jolla. Reception to follow.

Banks must work with clients to support financial plans There is little question that 2009 was one of the most difficult years in recent memory for both businesses and consumers alike. With 2009 now in the proverbial “rear-view mirror” and first quarter of 2010 nearly gone, the economic outlook for San Diego is beginning to look more promising. Consumers’ confidence is improving and home prices are stabilizing. The difficult part of this economic recovery, however, remains the high unemployment rate. This, too, is stabilizing and should show signs of improvement later this year as recovery continues. In 2009, California Bank & Trust (CB&T) approved more than $365 million in new credit to local San Diego businesses. The newlyapproved loans were primarily for commercial real estate, working capital lines of credit and term financing for small- to mid-sized businesses. As we move further into 2010, what we, and

This enables us to understand the economic conditions in the local marketplace in a way that larger, national institutions cannot. Decision-making and lending authority is also kept at the local level. This is critical in being able to actively meet the financial and credit needs of small- to mid-sized businesses in the San Diego market. Expanding new areas of business, such as our mortgage and multi-family lending is also of interest and important in meeting the needs of the communities we serve. In addition, CB&T continues to have a strong presence in SBA lending, and we will continue to stay active in that market. Overall, our goal at CB&T is to create and deliver the best financial solutions possible to meet the financial needs of the San Diego market place. SPORTS LJCD off to hot start on the diamond BY LEE CORNELL | VILLAGE NEWS The La Jolla High School baseball team is gearing up for a battle against rival La Jolla Country Day. The two squads square off at LJCD tomorrow, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. under the lights. Part of the added intrigue to this year’s battle for La Jolla bragging rights comes from a strong start on the part of LJCD. The Torreys have bolted out of the gates, blazing through the early portion of their season with an 113 record, including capturing the Lions Tournament 3A Division Championship. Torreys head coach John Edman is trying to take a diplomatic approach to the contest against La Jolla. Edman doesn’t want his boys getting ahead of themselves, but even he can’t help but crack open a smile thinking about the big match-up. “They’re a very good team and their coach is a great guy,” Edman said. “We’re going to play it like any other game. It is exciting to have a crosstown game,” he said. A key to LJCD’s hot start has been its solid pitching staff. The Torreys have three capable starting pitchers this season — seniors Jason Gilberg, Mac Anderson and Keith Gordon along with sophomore slinger Ian Lutz.

SPORTSbriefs

“I got taller and stronger and have been approaching the game a little differently,” Gordon said of his newfound success. “My windup up is a bit different and I’ve worked on my move (to first base).” Gilberg and Gordon are both lefties, which helps keep opposing teams off balance at the plate and on the bases. Having two seniors as their top starting pitchers has also added crucial leadership to a relatively young team. “For guys who have been here, done it, and know what to expect, we have to set the example for the younger guys,” Gilberg said. “You have to help them develop like the older players did for us.” The pitchers have done an excellent job of keeping LJCD close in tight games, but the team’s consistent batting has ultimately led to many of its victories. The Torreys have a wellbalanced lineup that Edman has tinkered with to produce a lethal combination. One key to the team’s run production has been the top of the lineup getting on base. At the leadoff spot, freshman shortstop Tommy Edman is batting well over .400 and currently leads the team in steals and runs scored. Batting in the two-hole is Gilberg, who ranks second on the squad with a .457 average and is second on the team with five

Junior catcher Anthony Torres leads LJCD in home runs with three and has 13 RBIs to go along with his .436 batting average. Sophomore second baseman Sam Ayala is hitting at a .474 clip, has 11 RBIs and a team-leading five doubles. The fearsome lineup just keeps on rolling as junior center fielder Frank Brown brings his .432 average to the plate with 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Rounding out the meat of the order is freshman right fielder Dustin Hughes who boasts a team-high 22 RBIs and three long balls. With the heart of the schedule still to come, nothing is guaranteed. However, such a great start has the Torreys thinking there is no limit to what they can accomplish. “We want to gain a conference title and win CIF,” senior third baseman Connor Gerhart said.

Boring clams are and are not BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD | VILLAGE NEWS Maybe the clam exhibit isn’t the first tank you’d choose to visit at an aquarium, but is it fair to say clams are boring? Before deciding, travel under water to the rim of the submarine canyon off La Jolla Shores. This marks the precipice of terraced downward-sloping terrain made up of a gooey, peatyclay material. The slopes’ vertical faces, averaging only a few feet high, are home to a plethora of life, the piddock clam being one of the most populous. These mollusks burrow deeply into the soft substrate, rendering nearly the entire animal invisible to the outside world. The snippet exposed is a pair of smokestacklike siphons. One siphon functions for inhaling and filtering food (microscopic plants), and the other takes care of excreting waste. While several boring clam species make their home in the sandstone wall, my favorite is the wartnecked piddock (Chaceia ovoidea), maybe because of its provocative moniker. The warty one’s siphons are distinctively mahogany and covered with tiny, white bumps. A white, hoselike body winds deeply into the sediment until the body dead-ends in a snow-white bivalve shell. The shell halves are thick and rough, with ridges along the outer sides to aid in boring. Unlike most clam species, the piddock cannot clamp its two shell halves together. Instead, both ends gape open, with the body and external siphons jutting out one end and a short suckercup foot sticking out the other end. While the foot clamps down onto the mud, the jagged-edged shell rotates and jiggles to dig the tunnel, an excavation that proceeds nonstop throughout the piddock’s life. It may take a piddock five

years to bore three feet into the slope. This last bit of information hints at why a piddock avoids setting up shop too close to its kin. Too many tunnels undermine a hillside, leading to landslides. In fact, piddock clams are the central force in shaping and reshaping the canyon’s slope. On occasion, I’ve come across a landslide in progress, noted when the visibility ahead is obliterated by billowing sand particles. I’m in no danger from the slide but that’s not the case for many of the newly homeless. Mobile species like fish and octopi easily escape the calamity, but sessile marine life like the piddock are now unprotected and vulnerable to predation. Once the dust settles, I fin past chunks of slope strewn below, a reminder that not only has a community been wiped out, but the landscape has been re-contoured. I’ve had to wait months for the sterile slope to become repopulated. From my observations, the turning point arrives on the heels of a dramatic marine life event — like thousands of squid converging on the area to spawn. Such episodes appear to act like a magnet for bringing in all variety of life from points unknown. But unlike the ephemeral stars of the spectacle, which shortly die or otherwise depart, much of the arriving life must remain because not long after, the barren slope transforms into one bustling with life. Revisiting the question of whether the piddock is boring requires a careful answer because, though true, this clam is also charismatic. Consider that while earthquakes and other physical forces have and continue to strongly impact the look of our shoreline, a hidden, biological force, the boring clam, also plays

a unique and powerful role in shaping and eroding the coastal scene. I suggest describing the piddock clam as a dichotomy in itself because it is both boring wallflower and influential mover and shaker. The parallels of life and fitness modeling

Trainer and nationally-ranked figure model Meaghan Faragasso is just one of many women who annually train for a beauty pageant unlike any other — one that combines the physique of a body builder and the poise of a runway model. It’s called fitness modeling, and on March 20 Faragasso competed in the San Diego Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini Championships held at the Scottish Rite Event Center where she placed among the top contenders. “We’re finding a balance between being super muscular and being super

feminine,” Faragasso said about her passion. For Faragasso, figure modeling is the perfect parallel for her life’s aspirations — staying healthy and being happy. A SEE FITNESS, Page 15

Do you like creative disorder? Have you ever wanted to look inside an artist’s studio? Ever wondered how they work? What they do? How they create? What materials they use? Or, perhaps you are the type who would like to learn more about the theories of art so you can have a more educated way of looking at art work. There is going to be a unique opportunity to do both on Saturday, April 10 when the University of California, San Diego Department of Art opens its doors to the public. In accord with the Art Department’s mission statement that, “the production of art, and historical and theoretical reflection upon art are most effectively pursued within a single community … in order to enable students to reach across boundaries to create new forms of art making…,” all 48 of the MFA practice students will open their small studios for inspection. The art film students will show films and the Ph.D. candidate art criticism students will host a day-long symposium. Starting at 3 p.m. and running until 8 p.m., the student studios, locat-

ed in the Visual Arts Complex on Russell Lane, will be open. What is special is that the students will not try to tidy up their work space and turn it into an immaculate gallery, but will leave it as they work. “The students will not try to hide their art making process … each studio will reflect how the artist thinks, works and collaborates,” said MFA student and Open Studios Chair Anna Lavetelli. There will also be a group exhibit showcasing examples of all the artists’ work in the Visual Arts Gallery Space. Student art films will be shown on a continuously-running loop in the Visual Arts Performance Space, also know as The Black Box Theatre. They include Katrin Pesch’s “Yellow Wallpaper,” shot in a vacant lot in Beverly Hills, which promises to be both “liberating and frightening.” Merve Kayan’s “On the Coast,” which was filmed in Turkey; Anna Lavetelli‘s “Something to Come Undone,” about a woman who meets an apparition; and Sheryl Oring’s “On the ContinuSEE UCSD, Page 15

It’s Baldwin New Play Festival time at UCSD BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE | VILLAGE NEWS

Johnny Gill and Jiehae Park perform in a play written by Stephanie Timm, whose play “EveryPhoto by Manuel Rotenberg thing Nice” will be featured in this year’s Baldwin New Play Festival.

It didn’t just happen. The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has one of the top theater programs in the nation, conferring master’s degrees in acting and playwriting, among many other theater disciplines including playwriting. One of the academic year’s glories is what is now called the Baldwin New Play Festival and affectionately known as BNPF. According to founder Adele Shank, the festival began in a small way in the mid-1990s. “When Ken and Ginger Baldwin pledged their support in 2000, it blossomed into a full-fledged festival with 10 professional theater guests from around the country,” Shank said. “It has been the Baldwin New Play Festival since 2003.” The BNPF presents the best work of UCSD’s MFA playwrights and, in their plays, it affords audiences an opportunity to see UCSD’s fine MFA acting stu-

dents and experience the acumen of MFA directing students as well. This season’s festival (April 14-24) features four plays, Ronald McCants’ “Oyster,” directed by Larissa Lury; Stephanie Timm’s “Everything Nice,” directed by Jeff Wienckowski; and Krista Knight’s “Phantom Band,” directed by Tom Dugdale; and a double bill of Lauren Yee’s “In a Word,” directed by Adam Arian and David Myers’ “Muzungu,” directed by Anthony Luciano. In addition to these ticketed productions, to which the public is welcome, there will be a free reading of the winning play in the Dr. Gaffney National Playwriting Competition at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 24 in the Arthur Wagner Theatre. Recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, and produced at theaters in London, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, McCants is a third-year playwright at UCSD and a SoHo Theatre Company Hub writer. Described as an exploration of the Black-American experience through the prism of one father

and son relationship, “Oyster” refers to the Oyster Lipton watch given to the teenager Anthony by his ne’er-do-well father, who seeks to reconnect after years of absence. The word “oyster” also refers to the bivalve that produces a pearl through the introduction of an irritant, a process that takes a long time. “Perhaps this whole play takes place in a watch or a clock,” writes McCants in his preface to the play. “Maybe there are gears and springs, numbers and hands. Maybe there is a way to track time. Maybe there are first and second hands that move and dance. Just remember that sometimes the first and second hand are in alignment, but most of the time they are not.” “Oyster” opens at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 in the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre, with additional performances at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 17 and 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 21 and 22. Honors Gala Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas Our familiar La Jolla Playhouse, founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, is now one of the most respected not-for-profit theaters in the country. It sends more musicals to Broadway than any other regional theater. The recently expanded facility now boasts three performance spaces: the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre, and the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for La Jolla Playhouse, a state-of-the-art theater complex that features the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. The Playhouse holds a fundraising gala annually and each year the gala is better than before. Debby Jacobs has chaired this event for the past 10 years straight, always doing a fabulous job, but this year the format changed somewhat, beginning a new tradition of honoring alumni artists and benefactors who have helped put the Playhouse at the forefront of American theater. The recent gala began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres under the stars and the added touch of a scotch-tasting station. Dinner seating in the Potiker Theatre was limited to 400 guests and was totally sold out. Wolfgang Puck Catering served entrees of tender roasted filet mignon and Asian-influenced wild salmon accompanied by hand-picked fine wines. And then — surprise! — no dessert, but snifters of scotch and Limoncello. Next, guests moved to the Mandell Weiss Theatre for a dazzling production including a performance by Lou Diamond Phillips, tributes to Jefferson Mays, Susan Hilferty, Neil Patrick Harris and Charlayne Woodward, and rousing musical entertainment by Playhouse director emeritus Des McAnuff and his Red Dirt Band. Des then presented a well-deserved tribute to the inaugural benefactor honorees, the Jacobs family, who’ve been giving their time and resources to the Playhouse for more than a decade. President Barack Obama sent a video tribute, complimenting the Jacobs on their work supporting the theater. Joan and Irwin Jacobs and their family (almost 20 members) appeared on stage, Joan quipping, “There’s a lot of us.” She thanked daughters-in-law Debby and Deni for chairing the event. Deni is also on the board of The Old Globe, and Joan commented about how well San Diego’s two most prominent theaters work together. Irwin spoke modestly about decisions the family has made and how they affected the theater. Festivities continued at an “afterparty,” back in the Potiker Theatre. Dinner tables had been replaced by dessert buffets, bars and a dance floor. “We’ll continue the drinks and dancing into the night, and we’ll shut it down when the police say we have to shut it down,” said a Playhouse supporter. “Best party ever!” Confronted with the fact that many of the evening’s guests had called this the best Playhouse gala ever and asked if she’d do it again next year, Debby said, “I have a senior in high school next year, so I think I’m going to have to take a pass for one year.” I’m willing to bet she comes back.

Ask The Lawyer Question:

SM

What is the proper way to list the beneficiaries on my IRAs?

When you open an IRA, you fill out a form and you list one or more Beneficiaries. If you have not reviewed these Beneficiary Designation Forms lately, you should do so now. If you fail to list a beneficiary or if they have died, the asset is part of your estate and may be subject to probate. You want to avoid this court procedure.

Answer:

The best way to list the beneficiaries is to name an individual or list of individuals. If the spouse is the appropriate beneficiary, it is best to list them as the beneficiary. The spouse can rollover the IRA into their own IRA. Other individuals can rollover the IRA into an IRA, but they will be required to take a yearly minimum distribution. THis amount is based on the beneficiaries’ life expectancy and the financial institution will figure it out for you. In certain circumstances you can name a trust as a beneficiary and it can get the same rollover treatment. Check with your financial institution and your estate planning attorney. The benefit of a rollover IRA is that the funds can continue to have tax deferred treatment. The interest income and dividends will not be taxed until the money is taken out of the IRA. Now, I have a question for you — have you funded your 2009 IRA yet?

former athlete who suffered from anorexia and depression, Faragasso turned to figure modeling following a near-death experience. Now, this aspiring model and fitness instructor competes yearly while training others toward meeting a similar goal — that of maintaining a healthy body while still looking feminine. Owner of Fit by Faragasso and also a trainer at Aventine’s Sporting Club, this San Diego local found definition not just in her body when she began training as a fitness model, but in her life. In order to train and compete, athletes must live a very disciplined life — from closely-monitoring their diet to daily fitness activities. The result is a lifelong change, as Faragasso has personally demonstrated . “It changed my life, it changed my faith,” she said, adding that the individuals she trains notice a difference in their confidence as well as with

With her “emotional coaching,” as she deems it, she promises each of her fitness clients “life will turn for the better.” By sharing her story — though she admits she hasn’t looked back since the day she opened her eyes to find herself in a hospital bed with family preparing for her death due to her battles with anorexia and depression — she does catch glimpses of the future. Expanding her brand Fit by Faragasso is one such avenue she sees in the future, while also “inspiring as many people on as broad of a scale as possible,” she said. Thanks to the rigorous exercise and diet schedule, she hasn’t turned rock hard like her body, but rather the opposite, finding herself more compassionate — and, to her, the results are not just visible when she is wearing a bikini.
