A project to demolish and rebuild a home at 1912 Spindrift Drive will go to the City Council for final approval, albeit with a negative recommendation from the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) after the group voted to deny the plan at its April 7 meeting. Several factors make the project a complicated one, including the existence

of a Native American burial ground, the area’s bisection by the Rose Canyon earthquake fault, the use of two separate lots — 1900 and 1912 Spindrift Drive — as one without being officially joined and the direct connection to the beach. The project has come to be as much an exercise in creative architecture as one in persistence in the face of complex land use regulation.

It’s the 11th week of marathon training with the Team VAVi Running Club (TVRC), and we have (literally) started to pick up the pace. The long runs have gotten longer and the short runs have actually started to feel short. We made it past the eightweek mark, the point at which coach Blake Miller told us our chances of finishing would be greatly increased. Moreover, in addition to longer mileage, the program has its participants, including yours truly, training for the dreaded inevitable: hills. In anticipation of the La Jolla Half Marathon (LJHM) on April 17, Miller has been subjecting us to hill runs. The La Jolla Half, as some well know, is known for being one of the most challenging half marathons in Southern California due to a grueling, 1.2-mile climb up 420 feet through Torrey Pines State Park between miles six and seven, among other smaller hills. At first blush, I thought I found some discarded bit from Barbie's Pink Glamour Camper. Instead, it was a bit of sea life. The vibrant pink sea slug Okenia rosacea, commonly called a Hopkins rose, belongs to the branch of nudibranchs that are dorids. Besides dramatic color, the slug is an architectural spectacle with its variety of protuberances, the bulk of which are long and loose enough to sway with the surge. When under water, it's nearly impossible to discern the individual parts that make up this charismatic invertebrate, but with an image to survey, one can analyze at leisure. The base of the Hopkins rose comprises a fairly wide, flattened body that also includes a foot and head. Since all

RUN

CONTINUED FROM Page 1 Internet search for reviews of this race begets a flurry of entries such as “This race is not for the faint of heart,” “I had no idea how crazy the hills were until race day” and “By far the toughest run I have ever done in my life.” So, with the horror stories in mind, we have all come to rely on Miller’s words of wisdom. “You will all be passing people on the Torrey Pines hill, and do you know why?” Miller said to us at one group run. “Because we’re training on hills!” I can’t speak for my running club peers, but I know I have repeated those words over and over to myself as I have struggled up the hills, recently incorporated into our training regimen. While I heaved myself up the roughly 200foot climb along Pershing Drive in Balboa Park, I imagined passing other runners on race day. As I shuffled up Prospect Street toward Torrey Pines Boulevard in La Jolla, I struggled to remind myself how good it would feel to push past the under-trained. It became clear that as my body began to give up, my imagination would have to pick up the slack. After all, they say long-distance running is at least as much mental as it is physical. In addition to the inclusion of hills into our long runs, Miller has also introduced an exhausting (though, admittedly kind of fun) little drill called “hill repeats” into our routine. After a short four-mile run around the hills in Balboa Park, the group convenes for a post-workout workout. Miller corrals us at the bottom of a grassy hill, while co-coach Robert Mitchell stands at the top of the hill. When Miller blows a whistle, we run hard up the hill and jog

back down. Miller has regularly reminded us that while going up hills is hard, going down can be equally as hard — especially when a downhill stint is followed by yet another incline. During our hilltraining sessions, he preached to not let gravity do all the work on a decline, as it may cause our muscles to cramp once the terrain levels off or, in the case of the last mile of the La Jolla Half, goes back up. “I always see people just flying down that long hill, but when they get to the uphill on Prospect Street, they're limping up it,” he told us. “Just do yourselves a favor and exercise some control on that decline.” So, should you find yourself in La Jolla this Sunday, please cheer on all the runners who have taken on the daunting challenge that is the La Jolla Half Marathon. And if you happen to be on the course between miles six and seven in Torrey Pines State Park, please cheer extra loud. We’re going to need it.

A rock-climbing wall, a dunk tank, family Zumba, martial arts, healthy snacks, edible art projects, balloons, face painting and raffle prizes. These are only some of the happenings at this Saturday’s free Healthy Kids Day, held annually by the La Jolla YMCA. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Y, located at 8355 Cliffridge Ave. Jamba Juice will hand out smoothies to the first 100 participants, and there will also be a local dentist on site giving out hygiene products and information. The local fire department will make a visit with its fire truck, showing kids how things

work and letting them climb inside. An ambulance will also make an appearance and a paramedic will teach kids about safety. All kids will receive a goodie bag with coupons to various retailers and discounts on YMCA programs and memberships. Raffle prizes include a prize pack from LEGOLAND California (including hopper tickets and LEGO goodies), a San Diego prize pack and a La Jolla YMCA prize pack (including a three-month family membership). For more information, visit lajolla.ymca.org or call (858) 453-3483. — Claire Harlin

New and returning board members were sworn in and Tony Crisafi was elected as the new board president. The new vice president is Robert Whittemore, the secretary is now Dan Allen and Jim Fitzgerald will remain as treasurer. District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner praised both the outgoing and incoming trustees. "I know how much passion and energy you put into this," she said. Outgoing President Joe LaCava was also singled out for doing a tremendous job shepherding the organization, and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he officially stepped down.

Drivers, park it yourselves Trustees disapproved of a plan to add four valet parking spots at 1298 Prospect St. The parking places would be primarily to service the new Eddie V's, a national chain restaurant opening soon. Retailers expressed concerns that using more parking for valet would take up too many regular spots in an already-tough parking situation along Prospect Street. Restaurant owners countered, saying the problems with parking in the area are not due to valet parking, and that increased valet spaces could actually ease the troubled situation. The trustees eventually turned down the plan, although some trustees said the plan seemed reasonable and that the status quo parking situation along Prospect Street needed to be addressed.

Preparing to be prepared Officials from the San Diego Police Department, Lifeguard Services and Department of Homeland Security were on hand to brief CPA members on disaster preparedness and evacuation plans for La Jolla in light of the recent earthquake in Japan and the tsunami-watch it generated for local beaches. Lifeguard Sgt. John Sandmeyer pointed out that La Jolla Shores is a potential "inundation area" for a tsunami. He said a significant event would be an eight-meter surge, which would translate to a wall of water nearly 100 feet high once it hit the shallow part of the continental shelf. The officials distributed pamphlets outlining steps to take and showing basic evacuation maps from La Jolla. Even without a tsunami, these would also be the same plans and evacuation routes that would be used in the event of a hurricane or "100-year flood," officials said. More information is available online at www.sandiego. gov/ohs/.

CPA: doors always open The Whitney mixed-use project will be heard by the City Council on May 3. The plan has generated allegations of CPA members violating California's open-meeting law, also called the Brown Act. Attorneys for the city have responded to the allegations in a letter to Bob Whitney's attorneys, saying there was no wrong doing. Nevertheless, they are meeting with the CPA to discuss board policies and procedures and the CPA itself is forming an ad hoc committee to look at their policies and to address any inconsistencies. New President Tony Crisafi is in the process of assembling the committee, after which the CPA will announce the dates of meetings, which will be open to public and will include public input.

LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS

BY KAI OLIVER-KURTIN | VILLAGE NEWS Local Girl Scout troops are joining together to pay tribute to the late Ashley Heffington The victim of a fatal motor vehicle accident on New Years Eve 2009, Heffington and her mother were struck from behind by an SUV while stopped at a red light. The man who hit them was under the influence of inhalant drugs, causing a five-vehicle accident. Heffington suffered severe brain injuries and died 12 days later at the age of nine. A memorial service was held at La Jolla Presbyterian Church in her honor. An active member of the local Girl Scouts and a fourth-grade student at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Pacific Beach, Heffington’s sudden, traumatic death shook the community. Girl Scouts from Pacific Beach and La Jolla began meeting once a month to see if their service units could create some good from the horrific tragedy. Local troop leader Evette Callahan began collecting donations from the troops to design and purchase a picnic table in Heffington’s name to be placed at Kate O. Sessions Memorial Park in Pacific Beach, one of Heffington’s favorite destinations. Since setting and accomplishing goals

are one of the fundamental principles taught in Girl Scouts, sales from troops’ cookie campaigns are divided into half — one half to fund an extracurricular of the girls’ choice, like horseback riding, and the other to give back to the community in some way. Donating as much or as little money as their budgets allowed, the troops raised enough money for a picnic table and plaque, which will rest under shady trees near the playground — a location handpicked by Heffington’s mother. “We’re all sisters in Girl Scouts,” said Callahan. “That could have happened to any of our daughters.” On Sunday, April 17, the inaugural Remembrance and Recruitment Event in Honor of Ashley Heffington will take place at 1:30 p.m., with an aquamarine ribbon-cutting ceremony (Ashley’s favorite color) for the picnic table dedication. Live music will be provided by St. Paul’s choir, in which Heffington once sang. “The local Girl Scouts, the Friends of Kate Sessions Park, a committee of City Beautiful of San Diego and John Stojic, a local contractor who donated his time and skills, were all instrumental in this project,” Callahan said. Serving as an open house for local girls to learn more about Girl Scouts, the event

is free to the public and will offer games, crafts, informational booths, a friendship garden, flag opening ritual, dedication ceremony, music and more. Girl Scouts who have earned their Bronze, Silver and Gold Award will be recognized during the event. These projects fulfill a need within a girl’s community, whether local or global, to create change that becomes ongoing. Girl Scout leaders who volunteer their time will be acknowledged for helping the girls become leaders of tomorrow. Cassie Ferris, one of the event organizers, volunteered to help with planning — fulfilling her requirement for the Silver Award. The Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishment in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. The project is designed to build the recipient’s skills, explore careers, gain leadership skills and make a commitment to selfimprovement. “By initiating an annual recruitment event at the Ashley Heffington picnic table, we thought it would be a great way to remember and keep Ashley’s memory alive,” said Ferris. “A recruitment event is a way to introduce non-

We presented our ideas to the service unit and now have about 13 booths with various activities for girls to participate in or gain information regarding scouting.” One of the booths present will be Mothers Against Drunk Driving, since the driver causing Heffington’s fatal accident was “huffing” prior to the incident.

Ferris and fellow organizer Kimia Nouri also designed the Girl Scout patch that will be distributed during the event, basing the concept on a supernova after Heffington’s middle name, Nova. “We are extremely grateful and overwhelmed by how much the Girl Scouts have been involved in this project,” said Cindy Heffington. “Ashley would have been extremely proud to have her name associated with this event. I hope it will continue in the years to come.”

Old story, new works: Gotthelf hosts Passover art show BY WILL BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS The Jewish religious holiday of Passover celebrates the biblical story of Exodus, wherein the ancient Israelites were freed from bondage under the pharaoh in Egypt. The eight days of Passover begins with a Seder — a ritual banquet where, since the 10th century, a text describing the exodus, known as the Haggadah, is read. The meaning of Passover, also called Pesach, has evolved over the ages and today represents the ideas of freedom from oppression, as well as renewal and rebirth. The Gotthelf Art Gallery at the Jewish Community Center at 4126 Executive Drive is hosting a show that runs until May 23 and features the work of 28 invit-

ed artists who have produced artwork and artifacts associated with Passover. There are paintings, photographs, mixed media and sculpture in the show, as well as a large table covered with plates, bowls and candle holders of metal, ceramic and wood construction. “The artists’ approach to the topic of Passover was creatively varied, thoughtful and successful,” said Beverly Garber, a former marketing expert who was at the opening reception in March. Sandra Berlin-Kroll has two intriguing hanging wall sculptures in the exhibition, which garnered a great deal of attention at the opening.

Berlin-Kroll is a retired community col- at the Alvarado Hospital Rehabilitation lege art teacher who recently started a Institute. She fashions her clay sculpture in ceramics class for recovering patients sections and uses unusual and varied objects for her molds — such as the ornate railing from a New Orleans-style French balcony (which she found in a Louisiana junkyard). She then colorfully paints her sculptures. Her creation is called “The Time of our Freedom, Letting Go of Chometz.” Jacobs said she was inspired by the idea that at Passover one should try to identify and free oneself from any bad habits, such as prejudice, and take on new good habits, such as tolerance. “It was inspiring to be part of this show,” said Jacobs. “I did a lot of research for my piece and worked very hard to get the concept just right.” Gallery hours are Sunday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Further information is available at (858) 362-1154 or www.sdcjc.org.

Henkel brings blues to Bird Rock Coffee BY BART MENDOZA | VILLAGE NEWS While 10 a.m. a weekend morning might seem an unlikely time for a live blues show, on the third Saturday of each month, anyone getting a morning caffeine fix at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters can enjoy the bonus of Delta blues tunes by legendary guitarist Robin Henkel. His Bird Rock Coffee Roasters sets are basic — just Henkel on a chair with his guitar playing a mix of originals and classics by performers like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Muddy Waters. “There was a time when 10 a.m. would have seemed like an unreasonable hour,” Henkel said. “Things went a lot later then. Most of the gigs these days are over by 11 p.m., so I hope I’m not blowing my image. But this works fine for me because I’m a pretty early riser.” Henkel is a local institution, performing his music in various formats from solo to big bands. He’s shared the stage with a variety of artists, from the San Diego Symphony to 1950s revivalists Sha-NaNa. He has released 10 albums since his 1981 debut, “Let’s Get Squished,” and he has won two San Diego Music Awards. Henkel also maintains one of the busiest schedules of any area musician. ROUNDABOUTroundup

La Jolla Boulevard drivers

Dogs yes, waste no

BY KENDRA HARTMANN | VILLAGE NEWS Residents with a heavy foot who drive through Bird Rock may want to consider easing off the pedal. Traffic officers have recently been spotted on La Jolla Boulevard checking for speeding and other violations at the behest of the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC).

“It’s something I’m very worried about. People routinely hit the gas coming out of the roundabouts and drive excessively fast or they’ll speed through the interior streets and alleys. Unfortunately, the majority of them are our own residents.” Joe Parker, President Bird Rock Community Council In an effort to calm the traffic situation that President Joe Parker calls “absolutely incredible,” the council has enlisted the help of the police and their radar guns, asking for an increased police presence to address the problem. “It’s something I’m very worried about,” Parker said. “People routinely hit the gas coming out of the roundabouts [on La Jolla Boulevard] and drive excessively fast or they’ll speed through the interior streets and alleys. Unfortunately, the majority of them are our own residents.” Parker said he is particularly concerned about the behavior of motorists during school hours, when parents are

rushing to pick up or drop off their children at school. The problem, he said, is not limited to speeding. Failure to stop at stop signs, texting while driving and exiting alleyways with a blind corner at high speeds are all offenses he has witnessed often, he said. In addition to the presence of police officers, Parker said there is also an opportunity for vigilant residents to do their part. An officer who is assigned to Bird Rock Elementary will receive complaints lodged by citizens who witness violations. “The traffic problem is so significant at [Bird Rock Elementary] and traffic safety is a major concern during school hours,” he said. “If a homeowner sees a repeat or known violator, they can contact the school and the officer will reach out to the individual. I have to assume that school staff and parents are taking advantage of this arrangement, because I’ve been told it’s effective.” Parker said one of the concerns is that drivers often use the interior streets to avoid the traffic and roundabouts on La Jolla Boulevard. As a result, the streets that used to be quiet are heavily traveled and, he said, drivers often fail to obey basic traffic laws. Parker doesn’t blame the increase in traffic on side streets solely on the roundabouts, however. “[The roundabouts] have contributed to more traffic on the interior streets, but it’s also the result of the redevelopment of the whole neighborhood,” he said. “And, of course, the redevelopment is a good thing, but we’re just concerned about people being respectful and careful when navigating our narrow streets.”

In an update to the existing issue of off-leash dogs at Calumet Park, President Joe Parker said at the April 5 Bird Rock Community Council meeting that the problem seemed to have been somewhat alleviated, though it still requires more effort and education to let residents know that dogs are required to be on a leash in the popular picnic area. Parker said that in addition to tearing up the grass and making picnicking less desirable, the problem has now become one of waste. “Dog waste is a major concern because it’s a health issue and the amount of dog waste there is significant,” he said. “My biggest concern is that the overlook there is a treasured place, and the activities that have been going on are making it difficult to enjoy it.”

Parker said he has been told animal control officers will be patrolling the area and issuing tickets. “I’m not anti-dogs,” he said. “I’m a dog lover and a dog owner. As a community, we’re just asking people to exercise the normal rules of engagement when it comes to having a dog in public.”

On the heels of the news that the sponsors of the proposed Bird Rock Farmers Market will not pursue the project in the near future, Bird Rock Elementary, which had stood to gain from the proceeds of the proposed market, has had at least some consolation — 5,680 consolations, in fact. The numbers recently came in that the sale of Bird Rock Community Cookbooks resulted in a donation of $5,680 to the school. The elementary school will continue to raise money through its numerous yearly fundraisers.

Aldis Browne Fine Arts, Inc. is introducing Avant Nez, a project by conceptual artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter on Saturday, April 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at 7752 Fay Ave. At the event, guests will experience Goeltzenleuchter’s olfactory art accompanied by a “sensory assault” of fine wines and gourmet delicacies, all curated by the artist, who has been incorporating the art of scent into his environmental and performance artwork for years. Goeltzenleuchter has developed an artistic process entailing three pre-arranged sittings to define the context for an evocative and intense journey into the creation of a client's personal fragrance, bottled within a sculpture designed by the artist. Goeltzenleuchter, who earned a master of fine arts from UC San Diego, infuses interdisciplinary research into the creation of designed environments, scripted and improvised performances, olfactory art and multimedia presentations. He exhibits, lectures and performs nationally and internationally.

Culinary aficionados are invited to learn to cook and pair wine on Sunday, April 17 from 3 to 6 p.m., with Whisknladle’s executive chef, Ryan Johnston, and restaurant owner Arturo Kassel at “Cooking With Love,” the first in a series of cooking classes benefitting Ronald McDonald House of San Diego. This year’s classes also feature chefs from Flavor Del Mar and the Marine Room. All proceeds from the classes raise funds for families with seriously ill children. Classes take place in the state-of-the-art kitchen at Ronald McDonald House, located at 2929 Children’s Way. Johnston will prepare pasta rustica Toscana, gnocchi with bolognese, ricotta and Swiss chard ravioli with brown butter and sage, and spaghetti alla chitarra with carbonara. Kassel will pair wines to fit the menu. The three-hour class costs $75 to participate or $50 to observe. Participants, audience members and Ronald McDonald families will enjoy the menu together. two stiff, hornlike projections (rhinophores) are anchored at the base above the head region. The rhinophores are equivalent to a nose, permitting the slug to sniff out food, mates and predators. Though challenging to separate out the rhinophore trees from the papillae forest, at least the horns' ringlike segments contrast with the smooth papillae. Peeking out from the opposite end are feathery tufts laid out in a closeknit, circular format. These are the gills, and while they do not resemble the surrounding papillae, they too are hard to detect. Not only are the gills about one third as tall as the papillae, they are attired in matching pink. In regards to rosiness, color intensity varies among Hopkins roses. And an individual may buck the monochromatic theme by embellishing the pink papillae with white accents. Following mating, the rose's spawn continues the color scheme by depositing a flattened coil consisting of tiny fertilized pale-pink eggs held together by a mucus sheath. To create the swirl, the egg string is laid down starting from the outside and curling inward. Other related slugs lay similar coils but do so by beginning from the inside and working outward. That's a good idea because there will always be room no matter the coil's length. The rose's method, however, may prove problematic if the center is reached and more egg string exists than there is substrate. It begs the question of why the rose would choose a strategy that required perfect planning. The diet of a Hopkins rose is limited to the rose-pink bryozoan Integripelta bilabiata. Bryozoans are primitive minutesized invertebrates that grow in colonies

well as its parking situation. That decision, however, was set aside by executive fiat at the March meeting of the LJCPA because then-President Joe LaCava was concerned with an appearance of impropriety. Tony Crisafi, current LJCPA president and board member is also the architect for the Spindrift project. While Crisafi recused himself from voting on the project, he did take part in the deliberations. In March, LaCava was adamant in his assertions that there was no wrongdoing on the part of Crisafi or the CPA as a whole. Nevertheless, he said he wanted to err on the side of caution, a point he reiterated at the April 7 LJCPA meeting. Attorney Matthew Peterson, who originally made the pitch to the LJCPA in February, returned to explain the project. He explained how each of the various factors regarding location and construction of the project were in compliance with city codes and the La Jolla Planned District Ordinance (PDO). He said the new home would improve the street by being in compliance with code, granting beach access to the public and creating view corridors that currently do not exist. "The last time the board approved this, they weighed the public benefit," Peterson said. Trustee Phil Merten, meanwhile, was not convinced. Merten, who led the charge against the Spindrift plan in February, said he was still not satisfied with the parking and the house's "setback."

on various surfaces and frequently contain biologically active chemicals. The rosy hue of I. bilabiata originates from its self-manufactured pigment identified as hopkinsiaxanthin. This pigment has yet to be found elsewhere in nature, be it plant or animal, that is except for the Hopkins rose. The difference is that the bryozoan synthesizes the pigment, while the sea slug ingests it along with the bryozoans toxic chemicals, color and meaty, nutritional parts. The Hopkins rose somehow delegates the pigment to the skin cells, the chemicals to the papillae, and the actual food to the digestive system. Amazingly, the defensive chemicals are selectively localized and stored until being detonated. For a very good reason, the arsenal is sequestered solely in the papillae and not spread evenly throughout the body. Should a potential predator see the slug and think it an easy meal, the long, waving papillae will be tasted because they are noticed first. After that unpleasant dose of reality, the predator moves on. The bite taken and rejected won't be fatal to the Hopkins rose because the papillae are not vital organs. Just to clarify, the slug's defensive adaptation dissuades most predators but not necessarily all. Fish are known to prey on the distasteful dorid but probably only when nothing else is available. I can't imagine a circumstance in which a meal of Hopkins rose is worth it. Aside from its vile taste and toxicity, it's not fast food because the fish must first act to fire off all the chemical defense missiles before consuming the animal. After such painful and laborious maneuvering, if I were the fish, I would have lost my appetite. — Judith Lea Garfield, biologist and underwater photographer, has authored two natural history books about the underwater park off La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores.

Resident parking for two vehicles, although screened by shrubs, is less than 10 feet from the sidewalk and the house does not have a garage. Additionally, the house itself is only about 12 feet from the street. "If projects don't follow the rules, we are obligated not to approve," Merten said. "If it's a special case, then okay, but as it stands, it violates land use codes." Peterson, however, said the PDO has no minimum standards for front yard or parking set backs. Merten contended that the intent of the law, if not the letter, requires projects to harmonize with and improve the character of a neighborhood, which he said this scheme did not do. Trustees suggested a compromise: asking the city for a variance to push the house a bit closer to the beach and off the street. Peterson said that would create privacy and site line issues with the neighbors on both sides, as well as problems with the seismic, archeological and lot line issues. Moreover, Peterson said, city planners already ruled out a variance because they deemed it unnecessary. Trustee Devin Burstein pointed out the "catch-22"-like nature of asking the applicant to go back to the city again to ask for a variance. "The city already told them no," he said. "So if we do this, then the applicant is stuck between two impossibilities, and it's not fair to the applicant." The final vote denied the project by nearly the same margin as the one that approved it in February with several of the trustees changing their votes from their previous positions.

BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE | VILLAGE NEWS University of California, San Diego’s Baldwin New Play Festival, affectionately known as BNPF, gets under way tonight, April 14, with four world premiere works by students in the university’s top-notch threeyear Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program. The festival runs through April 23. UCSD MFA graduate Naomi Iizuka, an acclaimed and highly produced playwright, heads the program. In fact, UCSD playwrights are regularly produced around the nation and new plays showcased at BNPF in recent years have gone on to productions and readings in major cities nationwide. The playwrights themselves select the festival plays. MFA playwrights are guaranteed production of their work during each year of the program, a situation Iizuka considers unique among such programs. At any given time, UCSD has between four and five MFA playwrights. According to Iizuka, this year’s plays are different from one another in style, but all

explore unexpected aspects of love, whether between parent and child, husband and wife or young lovers. “Some examine the mystery, the dark side, the difficult side or perhaps the more transformative, uplifting sides of love,” she said, touting what she calls inventive stories with striking characters. What came to be known as BNPF began in a small way in the mid-1990s, according to founder Adele Shank. Ken and Ginger Baldwin came aboard with support in 2000, and the festival was named for them three years later. This season’s festival features four works fully produced by MFA playwrights. In addition, there is a staged reading of A-lan Holt’s “8Ball,” winner of the fifth annual Dr. Floyd Gaffney Playwriting Competition on the African-American Experience. The late Gaffney was one of the founders of the UCSD department of theatre and dance and was regarded as the father of African American theatre in San Diego.

The Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library is spotlighting through April 30 the artistic skills of dozens of local artists during its ninth annual Invitational Drawing Show. The focus of this multi-media show is the refined art of drawing, and was originally conceived by visual arts librarian and exhibition curator Mark-Elliott Lugo. The show features 64 works by 14 established artists hailing from Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla and elsewhere in San Diego. Lugo said the current show is the largest and most ambitious of the drawing shows to date. “The art of drawing is often misunderstood, and the current exhibit demonstrates what is possible,” Lugo said. “It encompasses a wide range of expression and speaks to a resurgence of drawing in the art world. Given the advent of new media and digital expression, there is a synergy of classic elements and techniques with unusual surfaces and unexpected media.” The work of Ernest Silva, a respected visual arts department professor at the University of California, San Diego, work combines drawing and painting, demonstrating their inherent relationship. His “Rogue’s Gallery Series” uses black acrylic paint on raw wood veneer, and one piece is reminiscent of a childlike Tin Man from “The Wizard of Oz.” “[My] work emphasizes the use of images to trigger speculation based on personal experience,” he said. “The

common denominators are the handmade, the emotive and the sense that they may have been imagined, drawn from art history, or recalled from memory. They can be read literally, but easily move to metaphor.” There are other exceptional works in the show, like the work of blackand-white pencil artist Robert Nelson, who works in Pacific Beach and La Jolla resident Asa Kvissberg, a Swedish artist. Others include sculptor Kenneth Capps’ steel-plate drawings, Raúl Trejo’s exquisitely wrought trompe l’oeil butterflies and Katherine Brannock’s pen-and-ink bestiary series. The Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library’s visual arts program fills a vital niche, according to Lugo. It is a unique program funded solely by donations and extends throughout the entire library system. The library, its gallery space and the school lecture series, are all free of charge. The next show, featuring mixedmedia artist Flavia Gilmore’s “Recent Works,” will open May 21 and will run about three months. The Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library Gallery is located at 4275 Cass St. Its hours of operation are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 8 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lugo is available for group and class tours and can be reached at (619) 238-6627.

Formerly a January event, the April date resulted in better weather, to the delight of exhibitors and attendees alike. It took lots of work, but LJHS board member and event co-chair Trip Bennett deemed it well worthwhile. He said this year’s field of cars was the best ever, as the show’s reputation has grown within the car-collector community. About 130 vehicles were entered for judging, with 50 others just for display (many more had to be turned away). There were meticulously-restored antique and classic cars and motorcycles, rare and unusual machines of more recent vintage, and museum entries including a replica of a Sopwith Pup. A yellow 1943 Stearman biplane did morning flybys along the beach. One show car was rumored to be worth $5 million, there was a sleek Ghia with a jet engine, and Audrey Geisel’s Cadillac Grinchmobile was displayed with its GRINCH license plates. The event truly had something for everyone. Entertainment included Dave Patrone’s band, and an exclusive VIP ticketholders’ area featured shaded seating, complimentary drinks and a hot lunch. At the awards ceremony, Thomas Russell’s 1926 Lincoln Limo took Best in Show, after which the owners started their cars and drove them all away. It was quite a show!

A tea reception at St. James Hall followed the well-attended program. The evening before, a VIP reception for Paula was held at Garna Muller’s beautiful home on the slopes of Mount Soledad. The architecturally-significant edifice, with its fabulous view, was a perfect foil for the floral decorations created by VGCLJ flower design chair Judy Chance. The catering, by Jordan Russell, chef/owner of The Forage, was exceptional. A drawing was held for two tickets to a luncheon and another of Paula’s floral presentations, held that weekend on the Crystal Symphony ship, docked in San Diego. VGCLJ community projects include about $18,000 donated annually to support schoolyard gardens throughout San Diego.

*** CORRECTIONS: The March 10 column, “Fifteen fantastics, fashion plates, and six VW vans,” should have stated that the supper club décor for La Jolla Playhouse’s recent gala was designed by Playhouse Scene Shop foreman David Weiner and built entirely on-site by Playhouse staff. The set was designed for multi-year usage. The caption for photo No. 6 in the April 7 column, “Music lovers, fusion at the Riford and a prestigious award,” should have read “Phyllis Parrish (honorary chair), Judy White, Donna Aumann (Riford executive director), Dottie Stanley (event chair), Ruth Yansick (Riford board chair).” The Village News regrets the errors.
