Tragic UTC mass shooting leaves witnesses questioning motive
Slide into Summer
SDPD initially disregards racism as cause BY BLAKE BUNCH
Vita Coco, an international health drink company, came to UC San Diego on April 29 as part of a national tour to give students the chance to be their next plant manager. Not the typical job application, students were asked why they would make the perfect plant manager while riding down a three-story-high, 300-foot-long waterslide. Four winners will get to spend three days in New York at headquarters and then travel to Sri Lanka for one week, embracing the duties of a true company plant manager. Following the April 30 shooting at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, which left Monique Clark, a 35-year-old mother of three, dead, several victims and witnesses are hesitant to dismiss the notion, provided by San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, that race did not play a factor in the shooting. The shooter, 49-year-old Peter Raymond Selis, was white. Seven others were injured in the shooting. According to reports, four women and three men were shot. The victims were identified only as four black women, two black men, and a Hispanic man. Their names were not immediately released. "We believe that there is zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime,” Zimmerman said at a May 1 press conference. “He simply targeted his victims because they just happened to be there.
What started as a celebration of a friend's birthday party turned into a tragedy of epic proportion for all those in attendance." Thomas Blea, 34, was recently released from Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. Blea thanked first responders for their quick actions. Four victims were brought to Scripps Memorial, while two were brought to Mercy. SDPD has placed their focus for the gunman’s motive as him being distraught over a breakup with his ex-girlfriend. Selis called his ex after shooting two people, telling her what he had done. "Selis and his girlfriend recently broke up, and family and friends of the suspect said that he was distraught and depressed about the breakup,” said Zimmerman. “Selis is a La Jolla Crossroads resident. He called his ex-girlfriend and told her

that he 'had shot two people' and continued firing until police arrived at the scene. We believe that he wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen to him carry out his rampage.” After SDPD airborne ABLE units informed ground officers that Selis was reloading, they moved in, shooting and killing the suspect. According to witnesses, prior to Selis being taken out by SDPD, he targeted non-white victims. Also, they claim that he specifically avoided shooting white people who were in his direct vicinity. “This was partially, to some in fact, a crime full of hate or a racially motivated crime," said party attendee and witness Lauren Chapman. “We say that given, when we had our friend (Clark) laying on the ground, and we had a caucasian friend trying to tend to her, Selis told her not to administer aid.” Another witness, Mychael Gary, also heard Selis specifically say “Do not touch her,” when the woman attempted to help Clark. Victims are also questioning first responders’ response time. “I said my friends are here dying. We need help, you need to come quicker and the ambulance is going the wrong way,” said witness Mollique Johnson at a May 2 press conference.
“Run back in the pool and the man is shot and dead, and my friends are still laying on the ground and there’s no ambulance,” witness Hailey Thames described. “Now my friend is dead because they did not follow instructions, it was not correct. They didn’t do things right. They need to improve it because no one should die.” Although the motive for this act of violence is currently being debated, it is unusual for police to rule out race as a factor so early on (less than 24 hours) into an investigation. "Monique didn't deserve this," said friend Drew Phillips, who was also at the party. "You're at a pool party hanging out with friends, and you get killed. You don't go home to your babies." District 1 Councilmember Barbara Bry, along with Mayor Kevin Faulconer, expressed their condolences at the May 1 press conference. "As a mother and a grandmother, I cannot think of anything more devastating than losing a loved one to senseless gun violence,” Bry said. “ I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the victim who passed away as a result of yesterday's shooting at La Jolla Crossroads.” GoFundMe accounts have been set up for Monique Clark and for the victims’ medical bills. Parks and Beaches Committee discuss sewage spill, Concours d’Elegance crowds BY DAVE SCHWAB In April, La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. vetted a proposal to provide native vegetation and a public bench overlooking Black's Beach, while debating continuing to allow events, like the annual Concours d'Elegance, to use all of Scripps Park. In March, LJPB board member Patrick Ahern introduced a proposal to upgrade a lookout perched above Black's Beach to restore its luster. His proposal to improve the site was seconded by Melinda Merryweather, who's worked for years to preserve and enhance La Jolla beach accesses. However, Merryweather said she visited the lookout and was displeased. “When we voted, we were told there would be a bench,” said Merryweather, adding, “Not only was there no bench — there was no place for a bench.” Noting the ground cover onsite also exceeds two feet in height, Merryweather predicted, “This view will be taken away, and people (surfers) will be lined up like cattle to look through this gate.” Noting the lookout has “been a very special, spiritual place for me,” Ahern noted the trail leading down
to the beach is dilapidated. “I came to you with a proposal to introduce native, drought-resistant plants,” he said. “I wanted it landscaped, and beautified. Permanent irrigation should not be used.” Board member Mary Ellen Morgan expressed concern that shrubs onsite being used for ground cover will dominate the site, crowding out the sidewalk and diminishing the views. “To me it looks like you're trying to take two-thirds of that public area away,” Morgan said. “This is a discussion item, not an action item,” pointed out LJPB chair Ann Dynes, who said she'd put the issue on the group's May agenda as an action item. An advisory group debate then ensued over whether the size of growing events, like the Concours d'Elegance, are exceeding the limitations of the Scripps Park venue. “I went down and looked at the situation with the Concours and my feeling is that the whole park was screened-out by a chain-link fence,” said Morgan. “The public has been screened out. If this continues — there's going to be a lawsuit.” Resident Sarah Alexander said she was walking between the Concours and the Bridge Club the day of the classic-car event and the side-
walk was blocked and people were being turned away because of a sewage spill. Michael Dorvillier, who organizes the Concours, confirmed that there was a sewage spill there that the city was forced to address on the spur of the moment. “This is not a referendum on the Concours,” noted chair Ann Dynes. “It's always been my position that we should not pimp out the park,” said Merryweather. “When events grow to the point where they become too big, then it's time to either scale them way back, or move them somewhere else.” “The event (Concours) was wonderful and gave La Jolla a lot of notoriety, which we need,” said LJPB board member Tom Brady. “There will be questions that need to be answered by the applicant when they apply for approval of the Concours next year.” “We do take what you (community) say to heart,” answered Dorvillier. “This (Scripps) is our park, and we treat it as such.” “I just wish this event was getting a little bit smaller rather than getting larger,” said Merryweather. “It's just overcoming everything at this point.”

Celebrate pups at Paws and Pints A brain to pick, a shoulder to cry on, and a kick in the pants The La Jolla Veterinary Hospital will present its fourth annual “Paws and Pints” fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 at The Lot. The event will be held in support of the FOCAS program at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society and the FACE foundation. FOCAS is the foster program at The Rancho Coastal Humane Society and is responsible for finding homes for thousands of animals in shelters all around San Diego County. FACE is a non-profit that provides financial assistance for San Diego animal owners who are unable to afford the cost of their pet’s life-saving emergency veterinary care. “This event is in our community, for the community, and it has evolved into something that La Jollans look forward to year after year,” said event founder Stephanie Coolidge, of La Jolla Veterinary Hospital.
The fundraiser features an auction with autographed items from San Diego sports teams, VIP tickets to Padres games, surfboards, art from local artists, and countless restaurant, hotel, wine, museum and brewery packages. Other small businesses including Ark Antiques, Brick and Bell, MyOwnSpace and many others, have donated items and/or gift cards that will be auctioned off. The Lot will also donate a portion of the food and beverage sales from the night’s party to the beneficiaries. This year, there will be a new "wine grab" featured at the event and a photo contest on the red carpet. Cafe Milano-a taste of Northern Italy in La Jolla Owner/chef Pasquale Cianni brought northern Italian cuisine to La Jolla 16 years ago and has been successfully pleasing both local residents and out-of-towners — even out-of-thecountry guests — with his homemade pappardelle pasta, veal ossobuco, lobster ravioli, chicken marsala, veal scaloppini and many other authentic Italian dishes. This is just a small sampling of their extensive menu. The kitchen at Cafe Milano uses only fresh, local and seasonal ingredients in its dishes and the full bar has a large range of Italian and Californian wines to choose from. Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. We all have friends or family members we can talk to, colleagues we use as sounding boards, all of whom may be helpful, but we seldom think in terms of the specific functions these various people perform in our lives. Most of us need three very different kinds of support: a brain to pick, a shoulder to cry on, and a kick in the pants. We need a brain to pick when we want advice, when there are difficult decisions to be made, when we need to problem solve, when we want to choose among several alternatives, or when we wish to share a responsibility. Who are the people who could perform that function? It is those whose preferred way of relating to others is through thinking. They are the clarifiers. They have the capacity for understanding. It must be people whose minds you respect and who can articulate their thoughts well. Whenever you believe that two heads will be better than one, pick a clarifier to help you think. Be specific about your objectives and your hopedfor outcome. We need a shoulder to cry on (or at least lean on), when we don’t need advice, but want someone to listen to us without telling

us what we should have done or could have said. Sometimes we need someone we can be vulnerable with, confused, or not quite rational, and who won’t think any the less well of us for being that way. Many of us have trouble sharing our burdens with others, afraid of being boring, imposing, being seen as inadequate, incompetent, or too dependent. When we need a good cry or just someone to sit and listen patiently to our problems, we must find a comforter. Those are people whose main way of functioning is through feelings. They have the capacity for intimacy. You will recognize comforters by their availability and their non-judgmental attitudes. It is important for you to be able to trust this person to not use the information against you. To just be able to talk and have someone listen may be enough. The third function we may sometimes need in our lives is a kick in the pants. This is when we are ready to give in or give up, when we need to be redirected or challenged. A kick in the pants from the right person at the right time, and in just the right way, will get us going again in our attempt to master our environment, our work, ourselves. The people who can do this best, who say to us: come on, you can do it; pick yourself up and go for it are the confronters. Confronters’ preferred mode is though acting. They have the capacity for assertion and have little tolerance for ambivalence or procrastination. be out there pushing themselves and others to get on with it. When you need a confronter, you ask for a pep talk, explaining why you need one. While the confronter will help us act (or get our act together), the comforter will help us deal with our feelings, and the clarifier will help us think better. It is up to us to seek the people who can best perform these functions and ask them to do so. Each one has different capacities and will evaluate us by a different set of criteria. We will seldom find all three attributes in a single human being. It is important to find people who can fill all three functions. Stop a moment and jot down the names of people who you can call on when you need a brain, a shoulder, or a kick. Besides individuals who may be helpful to us, belonging to an organization, a club or a peer group can also play an important role in our lives. These groups are made up of people who share similar interests or similar positions and can be potential resources for information or referrals. They are indispensable because they permit people to see that they are not alone in dealing with particular problems, that there are others like them, struggling with the same issues, and willing to help. Whenever people meet to discuss matters of mutual interest, everyone benefits from the exchange because new solutions are found, and commitment is greater when people participate in decisions which affect them. The existence of some committees, while not apparent to the members, have sometimes no other purpose than to reaffirm the organization’s goals, objectives, and values and to allow people to be together, exchange ideas and points of view, and support one another. We not only all need help from others, we equally need to be there when people need us to clarify, comfort or confront. Which are you best at? Natasha Josefowitz is the author of more than 20 books. ‘Fast Girl: A Life Spent Running From Madness’ showcases Olympian’s coming to terms with mental illness BY LUCIA VITI Suzy Favor Hamilton is a highly-decorated champion athlete. The three-time Olympic runner lauds a history – from high school to the Olympics – of record-breaking and recordmaking track wins. Dubbed as one of the fastest runners in the world during the 90s, she reigned behind Mary Decker Slaney as the second-fastest 1500-meter runner in American history until 2014. Despite heartbreaking Olympic losses, the long-legged, Wisconsin beauty touted sponsorships from the likes of Nike and Reebok. She even published a swimsuit calendar. When the Olympian retired her running spikes, she became a popular public speaker, wife, mother and successful real estate mogul with her husband Mark. So how does a woman who achieved the American dream become outed by a gossip website tabloid as an expensive, Las Vegas escort? How does the consummate perfectionist land on the front page of the New York Daily News beneath the headline, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Ho?” Bipolar disorder; a disease often misdiagnosed and mistreated. A mental illness criticized by those lacking the education to understand its parameters. Today, Favor Hamilton is back on track and still a champion. But also, she uses her celebrity status to advocate for those, like her, suffering from this insidious disease. Favor Hamilton will deliver the keynote speech on Living with Bipolar Disorder at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on Monday, May 15, at 11 a.m. Hosted by the Jewish Family Service of San Diego, the New York Times-bestselling
author of “Fast Girl: A Life Spent Running from Madness,” will discuss living with bipolar disorder. “The Behavioral Health Committee is determined to de-stigmatize mental illness in all of its forms; to increase the openness, transparency, and understanding around mental illness,” said Michael Hopkins, Jewish Family Service CEO. “Suzy Favor Hamilton will offer great insight for helping family members and friends serve as partners along the path to healing.” Favor Hamilton hopes to impact others to support, not judge, those suffering from bipolar disorder. “Those who don’t understand bipolar disorder judge those who suffer from the illness,” she said. “Bipolar is a disease, an illness, like cancer is a disease, an illness. Support is key. Without support, there’s no reason to get healthy.” The components of bipolar disorder include manic highs and depressive lows and excessive use of drugs, alcohol and/or sex. Fifty-percent of bipolar patients suffer from hypersexuality. While exhibiting classic bipolar symptoms, rapid speech, endless energy, insomnia and reckless spending, Favor Hamilton became consumed by manic hypersexuality. “I was not a sex addict, I was hypersexual,” she said. “There’s a distinction, one that’s often misdiagnosed. I freely slept with strange men, knowing that my behavior wasn’t right. But it felt normal; a delusion caused by the illness. The chemical imbalance caused by bipolar gives the brain power. Reflecting, I can’t believe that was my life.” But how does the tale of the victorious com-

petitor segue into the narrative of the highclass hooker? A doctor’s rush to judgment. Favor Hamilton was misdiagnosed with postpartum depression – not bipolar disorder – and prescribed Zoloft following the birth of her daughter, Kylie. Zoloft triggered a bipolar mania for sex. She remained in denial, cognizant that something was terribly wrong but confident that “tomorrow would be better.” “A 10-minute conversation with a medical practitioner who didn’t ask the correct questions as to why I was depressed changed my life forever,” she said. “Zoloft was a trigger and triggers have negative outcomes. The drug didn’t trigger me to have sex. The drug removed my inhibitions. I became unprofes-

sionally flirtatious. I had no filter. I changed.” Struggling through their now 20-year marriage, Mark and Suzy decided to refuel their relationship by doing something “enjoyable,” like skydiving, and “risqué,” a sexual threesome tryst in Las Vegas. “Neither event would’ve happened had I not been on that drug,” she explained. “But my inhibitions were gone. Mark was surprised at my ‘bizarre’ behavior but went along because I was so excited.” The sexual encounter fueled Favor Hamilton with an incredible high.

“I felt so alive,” she said. “Mark and I shared a new and exciting, secret taboo. I wanted to do it again, so we agreed to engage in an open relationship which gave me the power to stray. I returned to Las Vegas monthly. Within six months I became an escort. Driven to up the ante, I became a high-end escort catering to clients that paid me hundreds, even thousands, of dollars an hour.” Returning as “often as I could,” life became a duplicitous tug-of-war between Kelly, the Las Vegas escort and Suzy, the Wisconsin homemak-
er and entrepreneur. “I created a second identity – as many escorts do – to become Kelly who lived in a world of sexual exploration as a strong, powerful badass. I hated Wisconsin Suzy, the athlete who had to be perfect. Kelly didn’t have to live up to anyone’s standards.” Athletes, actors, and company CEOs showered “Kelly” with lavish diamonds and pricey clothing. “Suzy” lost all sense of reality. “Clients liked me because I was crazy,” she continued. “And yet, I thought I was normal. I was in a bizarre state, thinking why isn’t everyone doing this? I’d often hear, why can’t my wife be like you and I’d think, why isn’t your wife like me?” Stints became longer.
Featured “I stayed in Vegas for a month with no recollection of my time there,” she said. “Mark knew about my life as an escort, but not my behavior. While he regrets that he didn’t do more, he feared that if anyone knew, our lives – family, business and my reputation as the AllAmerican Girl – would be ruined.” And one day, Kelly’s facade detonated. Outed by an embittered client “who had a bizarre reaction to my refusal to marry him,” a writer from a website tabloid found her working the Las Vegas Rock ‘N Roll Marathon – not as an escort – and threatened to “ruin” her life. And he almost did. Once public, the media onslaught became relentless. While refusing to reveal the client’s name because “I’d never glorify or
be like him,” the chastened escort became suicidal and checked herself into a recovery program in Malibu. “Shunned and labeled a whore, a slut, I couldn’t return to Wisconsin,” she explained. “People suggested that I kill myself like my brother Dan – who also suffered from bipolar disorder – did. I was shamed and judged – badly. That’s why I fight to educate those who don’t understand the reality of bipolar. I fight for people’s lives. I serve as a voice for those who have no voice.” The proper diagnosis and medications followed suit. Weaned off the wrong medication while being treated with the correct one, she initially continued to service clients because “nothing changed in my
brain.” “I lied to everyone,” she said. “I was still incredibly ill, drinking and drugging. I had no healthy coping mechanisms. As an athlete, running was my coping mechanism. I didn’t deal with my problems, I just ran. But no one ever made a connection to mental disease, despite its layers within my family tree.” Mark Hamilton concentrated on getting Suzy well while she focused on Mark and Kylie during her recovery. “Mark focused on my disease, not my behavior,” she said. “He’s the hero. He’s the blessing. I focused solely on Mark and Kyle, realizing that the outside world had no right to space in my head. I never meant to hurt anyone. My behavior kept me alive. I did what I needed to do to survive.” Favor Hamilton noted that doctors often sidestep the sexual component of bipolar disorder because it’s “embarrassing” to discuss unhealthy sexual behaviors and excessive masturbation. Certain that “my story would be different” if drugs or alcohol headlined her illness, the activist works tirelessly to change perspectives because “no one has the right to ruin lives.” “There’s no drug test, secret or miracle cure for living with bipolar,” she said. “It’s unchartered territory. I didn’t understand the depth of my illness until I became healthy. I could’ve lost my life through risky behaviors and drugs. Fortunately, I had access to the best doctors and the proper medical treatment. Many don’t. Some lose everything. People think it’s their fault. It’s not. An imbalance of brain chemicals drives those suffering to find comfort in unhealthy coping mechanisms. “Education is paramount. Mental illness should be addressed as early as high school. Society’s quick to label young teens absurd or wild when illness may be the reason for the occurrence of bizarre behaviors.” People have encouraged Favor Hamilton to sue the doctor and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Zoloft, who have now publicly stated the drug is not suitable for anyone suffering from bipolar disorder. While she holds no blame, she encourages patients to educate themselves with the proper “questions to ask the doctor.” “Bipolar disorder has no easy route to wellness,” she said. “Drugs should require a consultation with a psychologist and a psychiatrist, not a family practitioner. I wasn’t guided to the correct professional.” Favor Hamilton also stressed the importance of sharing one’s family mental health history. Her brother Dan jumped off an eight-story building at age 37. “Those who die by suicide don’t want to die,” she said. “They simply want to end the pain. Their bodies are on fire. They’re burning.”

ductions. The program continued with the Betty Mabee Parade of Hats. Every year there are 12 nonprofit organizations that create a hat using the theme. Each organization makes an elaborate hat and many of the hats were adorned with clocks in keeping with the theme, “As Time Goes By.” A representative of each organization modeled the hat on the runway and then strolled throughout the audience showing their creation. Everyone in the audience was given a chance to vote for their favorite. The best themed hat award went to BABES,
extensions can be matched to that. What type of hair extensions do you use? Judy uses Great Lengths all-natural hair extensions and prefers these extensions because they are created from 100% human hair and use a unique, application process that attaches a bond of protein the same molecular structure as your hair. This application process does not harm your own hair. While others use techniques such as welding, waxing, gluing or knotting, which strain your hair to a high degree Judy uses a much more gentle principle called modulating. An extremely high-tech method of bonding the hair strand to your own hair. Extensions can be used for volumizing, lengthening, coloring or simply adding texture; Judy will offer a free consultation guiding you through your new style. Whether creating a new look, following fashion or with a special occasion on the horizon. Judy’s hair extensions have over 55 colors to choose from and blend with your own hair. Most importantly your own hair will not be damaged and the extensions can be easily removed by an expert.
Can hair extensions damage my hair? No, they will not. Actually, even very fine and damaged hair can become healthier if you’re wearing hair extensions because they will protect your hair from things that could damage it like curling irons, blow dryers, styling heat and environmental damage. Because of the unique application bonding system, the extensions can be easily removed. This is different than many hair extension methods that bond too tightly to your hair. Judy is fully trained on how to educate her clients to professionally take care of their hair extensions at home. Judy will recommend hair care products, brushes, combs and appliances for use at home. Hairstyling is very similar to how you style your hair without extensions. An artist’s rendering of the proposed Hillel Student Center.
HILLEL >> CONT. FROM PG. 1
tion. University of California San Diego’s Hillel Society involvement in this project began in 2002, when they first began exclusive negotiations with the City of San Diego, who owned the lot. They purchased the lot in 2006, with the city fully aware of their intentions to build the Jewish student center. While any proposed structure is greatly scrutinized in La Jolla, the proposed Hillel Student Center has seen disapproval from some residents beginning with their initial proposal in 2005. At this time, they had proposed a 12,100-square-
foot structure, with 68 on-site parking spaces. The Shores Association and TRLU still found this unacceptable, and “out of character” for the single-family residential area. In 2010, a second proposal was brought forth – this time downgraded to 7,084-square-feet, with 27 on-site parking spaces. This proposal was also opposed by both the TRLU and Shores Association. Now, the Hillel Society, in following all regulations that stipulate that any religiously-affiliated buildings remain off-campus, wishes to designate the student center as a “permanent religious structure.” “This would be like putting in a YMCA, or another building with a religious purpose,” said attorney for TRLU, Julie Hamilton. “Since it is a student center, the comings-

and-goings all day long, with the building’s capacity for 140-200 people is extremely impactful to the area. There are many people that live in the neighborhood that either work for, or have worked for the university, but this is just too close to singlefamily residences.” Rabbi David Singer, director of the UC San Diego Hillel Society, was confident in their proposal prior to the planning commission hearing. “We are very excited to present this to the city on Thursday,” said Singer. “We feel that a majority of neighbors in the Shores are pleased with our adaptivity, and our want to beautify this piece of property that is one of the entrances to La Jolla.” “The La Jolla Planned District Ordinance (PDO) in the area specifies that the area includes single-family homes or permanent religious structures, which we truly are,” he added. “The proposed center would act as a buffer of empty space, as well as provide roughly 10,000 square feet of landscaped park space. Also, our studies have indicated that it will have zero percent impact on the environment of the area, regarding traffic and other perceived issues.” Although Singer is optimistic about the Hillel Society’s new proposal, Hamilton and others continue in opposition, not accepting any of their proposals outright. TRLU cites traffic issues, the geographic location, and its existence as an “out-ofplace” student center to define their case. “Everyone has said for years, ‘this property has been considered impossible to be developed,’” Hamilton said. “We think that the proposed Hillel student center would fit much better as an extension of the Jacob’s JCC or in a similar setting, but is out of character for the neighborhood.” The planning commission's passing of the proposal will likely be appealed by the opposition, then brought before city council.

University City updates: Fiesta de Mayo and library upgrades BY JEMMA SAMALA Fiesta de Mayo Mark your calendars for the Spreckels Elementary annual Fiesta De Mayo to be held on Wednesday, May 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Come out to watch the students perform traditional dances from various countries and feel the spirit of the school. It's an evening you won't want to miss with singing, dancing, game booths, food and the famous bake sale. Spreckels Elementary is located at 6033 Stadium St. (corner of Governor Drive and Stadium St.). For more information, visit www.spreckelscommunityuc.com/fiesta-demayo. UC cluster meeting All are welcome to the next and last UC Cluster committee meeting for this school year on Monday, May 15 at Spreckels Elementary, starting at 4:30 p.m. Childcare will be made available until 6:15 p.m. The purpose of the UC Cluster committee is to improve educational endeavors and student achievement in the University City community of public schools, which includes Curie, Doyle, and Spreckels elementary schools, Standley Middle School, and University City High School. For more information about the UC Cluster committee, visit www.uccluster.com. Imagine UC 2020 John Lee Evans, a San Diego Unified trustee, recently announced that the Imagine UC 2020 projects are moving along with the approval process for projects that include an aquatics center, a stage/pavilion, a jogging path and added grass field space. The project is a joint use project between San Diego Unified School District and the City of San Diego and the UC community. The projects have already been approved by the Standley Park recreation council. The next step is approval by the City Park and Recreation Board. It will then require approval by the San Diego Unified School Board and city council. All supporters of the Imagine UC 2020 projects are encouraged to attend the next Park and Recreation Board meeting to urge their approval. The San Diego Park and Recreation Board Meeting will be on Thursday, May 18 at 2 p.m., at the Balboa Park Club Ballroom, located at 2150 Pan American Road West. Please call ahead to make sure it is on the agenda: 619-236-6643. For information about the projects, visit www.universitycitynews.org/improve-uc/. UC library closes for upgrades The University City Branch Library will temporarily close for system technology upgrades from May 15 through May 26. The purpose of the closure is that the San Diego Public Library is taking steps to enhance customer service and improve efficiency. Through July, libraries across the city will undergo a system-wide technology upgrade. Patrons can call the library before May 13 to arrange to pick up items at a nearby branch library such as the North University Branch Library, etc. During the closure, items placed on hold will be kept at the library and holds will be extended until after the library re-opens. Visit the “library locations” page for contact information. www.sandiego.gov/public-library/locations.
What will happen during the upgrade? The library will receive equipment upgrades and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Materials will be tagged with RFID microchips, replacing the use of barcodes to catalog and track materials. The RFID chips do not contain patron information, so there are no privacy risks. The new equipment will allow for quicker check-out times and inventory of the collection. The University Community Branch Library will re-open on Saturday, May 27 (closed Sunday, May 28 and Monday, May 29 for Memorial Day). Staff will be available to help patrons use the new self-check machines.

RESIDENTIAL BROKERAGE
From my garden: Planting a meadow lawn saves water BY LINDA MARRONE After tending two small patches of grass on either side of my front walkway throughout the drought, I realized how much water, fertilizer, weed control and maintenance grass requires, so I decided to replace my grass lawn with a meadow lawn, which at this time is primarily micro-clover. A meadow lawn is nothing more that what the name implies, a lawn filled with plants you would find growing naturally in a meadow. Meadows are abundant with clover, grasses and weeds, and in this case, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you look at weeds from a different perspective, they can be quite beautiful and they will attract beneficial insects and bees to your garden. Here are some more benefits to having a clover "meadow" lawn. No more fertilizers Clover produces its own nitrogen, so you do not have to fertilize it to keep it healthy and green. It has a symbiotic relationship with soil-dwelling bacteria that enables the plant to take nitrogen out of the air to feed itself. Many organic vegetable growers plant clover in with their crops so that it can provide nitrogen to their plants without using chemicals. Less mowing Our plan is to only mow every couple of weeks or monthly and only edge the border
and trim unwanted grass from time to time, as needed. Many people with larger meadow lawns choose to mow every 3-4 months, allowing a more naturalistic meadow to evolve over time. Less watering We planted our clover lawn in the winter when rain was in the forecast and this past winter’s rain really helped to establish it. If it isn't raining, you will need to water the seeds everyday for two weeks. Clover is considered drought tolerant and watering twice a week once it establishes will keep it lush and green during normal weather. There are endless suggestions on how to plant clover lawns online and I choose to do it one of the easy ways, since I only had a small area to plant. In January 2016, we planted micro-clover seeds over the existing grass lawn and did a second planting in January 2017, which has yielded a verdant green lawn of clover that produces tiny white flowers. To prepare the areas for the clover seeds, first, my gardeners mowed down the lawn as low as they could, detached the tangled growth of Bermuda grass and aerated the soil. Clover prefers to be grown in poor soil, so amending the soil before planting is not necessary. The seeds were spread over the lawn area and then covered with weed seed-free top soil. Do not fertilize your clover seeds, because
Clover lawns need less water to stay lush and green.
it will only encourage the grass to grow. Besides white, micro-clover flowers also come in pink. Another choice is “Dutch white” clover, which grows taller and produces more flowers than its micro-cousin. The taller varieties also come in pink and crimson. All varieties can be purchased online. Who would have known that, after years of removing clover from my lawn, that I would

actually purchase clover seeds and encourage them to grow? At first, my gardeners thought I was crazy to purchase "weed seeds," but now they see the benefits and they think it was a great idea.

Impending honors New York’s Lucille Lortel Awards nominations have been announced, and among the contenders for distinguished play is “Indecent,” which was seen in its co-world premiere (with Yale Repertory) at La Jolla Playhouse in 2015. Rebecca Taichman, who staged the work in La Jolla, is also nominated for her direction. The play concerns the incendiary New York production of Sholom Asch’s “God of Vengeance” in 1923. versity’s Skirball Hall. The Playhouse-originated musical “Come From Away” is nominated for best musical, in contention with “Anastasia,” directed by Darko Tresnjak, former Old Globe Shakespeare Festival artistic director. In the “best director of a play” category, Taichman contends with Globe artistic director emeritus Jack O’Brien (“The Front Page”). Nominated for best director of a musical are La Jolla Playhouse artistic director Christopher Ashley (“Come from Away”) and Tresnjak (“Anastasia”). Tony Award nominees were
announced May 2, and the awards ceremony will be telecast on June 11. Drama Desk award nominations were announced on April 27, and again “Anastasia” and “Come From Away” figure prominently. Lynn Nottage, whose plays “Ruined” (Pulitzer Prize) and “Intimate Apparel,” among others, have been seen locally, received her second Pulitzer Prize for Drama with her most recent play “Sweat.” She is the only woman playwright thus far to have received two Pulitzer Prizes. American mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, seen recently in Houston and San Diego in the world-premiere production of Jake Heggie’s “Great Scott,” has received one of five 2017 Opera News awards. The award was presented by famed soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa at the Plaza Hotel April 10. Speaking of Heggie, soprano/UC San Diego grad, Priti Gandhi, will include one of his works in her 7 p.m. May 13 Bodhi Tree recital at St. James by the Sea. UC San Diego classics scholar and professor Dr. Marianne McDonald received recognition for her life’s work in “Arion: A journal of Humanities and the Classics at Boston University” for “recognition of her life’s work as scholar, teacher and mentor.” Last but not least, UC San Diego’s kallisti ensemble presents chamber works: Francis Poulenc’s “La Voix humaine” and Tom Johnson’s “Dryer and Drawers” on May 10, 12 and 13 at Conrad Prebys Music Center Experimental Theater.
