Fire pits saved again BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Mayor Jerry Sanders announced in a May 10 press conference that San Diego’s fire pits will survive another fiscal year, thanks to lastminute donations from the San Diego Foundation, the La Jolla Community Foundation and the infrastructure funds of City Councilmembers Sherri Lightner and Kevin Faulconer. The outlook was bleak as of 1 p.m. on May 7, the deadline for Sanders’ 2011 budget submission to the City Council, when only $2,800 of the required $120,500 to keep 186 fire pits in place citywide had been raised. “We will start making preparations for removal,” said Rachel Laing, the mayor’s press spokeswoman, on that day. “We are going to store the fire pits and hope that during better budget times we’ll be able to restore the service.” In a triumphant address Monday, Sanders said he was pleased to announce the donors’ commitment to the fire pits and to San Diego’s families. “Today, we see what happens when civic-minded folks step forward for the sake of the public good,” he said. Bob Kelly, president and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, said the cause aligns with the foundation’s mission to make San Diego a better place in which to live, work and play. SEE FIRE PITS, Page 3

Employees at Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s Marine Science Development Center received an unexpected visitor April 27. At about 7 a.m., senior lab mechanician Michael Bludworth was carrying some materials into the shop when he noticed something out of place. “I looked over and saw what I thought was a seal, but turned out to be a sea lion sitting on top of one of our dive gear carts used to transport gear down to the beach,” Bludworth said. “He started walking up the hill, and when he headed toward the shop I started recording a video.” Bludworth posted the 57-second video on Scripps Oceanography’s SEE SEA LION, Page 2

She remains one of Hollywood’s most symbolic icons. She has captured men’s hearts and women’s admiration everywhere. And she spent most of her childhood right here in La Jolla. Raquel Welch, 69, visited Warwick’s Books on May 10 to promote and sign copies of her new woman-to-woman manifesto, “Raquel: Beyond the Cleavage.” Before taking a seat at the signing table to talk and pose for photos with a crowd that Warwick’s staff estimated at 250, Welch briefly remarked that she was happy to be back in La Jolla, which she remembered as the site of many fond childhood memories. Accompanied by her sister, Gayle Tejada, who said she lives down the street from the bookstore, Welch also asserted that she was
not a product of the film industry and stressed the importance of maintaining physical and emotional wellness through proper diet and yoga. In “Beyond the Cleavage,” Welch employs her autobiography and her personal philosophy to counsel women about love, sex, health, body image, career, family, forgiveness and aging. She divulges details about a temperamental father, her first love, marriage and divorce, her struggles as a single working mother in Hollywood, her battle to acquire challeng-
ing roles and respect as an actress, and her resolution to never lie about her age. Welch also reveals some of her beauty and health regimens, including her passion for fashion and yoga, which she says have helped her stay positive past age 50. Born Jo Raquel Tejada on Sept. 5, 1940 in Chicago as the first of three children to an American mother and a Bolivian father, the family relocated to La Jolla when Welch was two. With her sights set on theater and the performing arts from an early age, Welch grew up taking dance classes and later won a slew of teen beauty titles, including Miss San Diego and Miss La Jolla. Determined to follow her dreams, Welch graduated from La Jolla High School in 1958 and enrolled at San Diego State College on a scholarship that fall. The year after that, she SEE WELCH, Page 2

married her high school sweetheart and first husband, James Welch, and worked off campus as a San Diego weather forecaster for KFMB TV. The couple had two children, Damon and Tahnee Welch, before the marriage dissolved in 1961. Following the split, Welch moved briefly to Dallas with her children before returning to Los Angeles to pursue film full-time. Her early, minor roles included an episode of “Bewitched” (1964) and with Elvis Presley in “Roustabout” the same year. Her first contract film, a 1966 remake of “One Million B.C.,” solidified her role as a sex symbol when she struck an infamous pose in a prehistoric animal-skin bikini that evolved into a best-selling poster. Her leading role in “Fantastic Voyage” (1966) catapulted her into international stardom, and Playboy later named her “Most Desired Woman” of the 1970s. In an effort to pursue more serious roles, Welch appeared as a transsexual heroine in 1970’s “Myra Breckinridge” and in controversial sex scenes with African-American athlete Jim Brown in “100 Rifles” (1969). After launching her own television show “Raquel!” in 1970, Welch dabbled with careers in pop singing, a one-woman nightclub musical act in Las Vegas and a Broadway musical. More recently, Welch appeared in a cameo on the popular televi-
sion series “Seinfeld” and American television comedy “Welcome to the Captain.” With the release of her new book, Welch, long wary of the media, hopes to set the record straight and dispel her legacy as one of the film industry’s most enduring sex symbols. “Although this book is not intended to be an autobiography, I feel the need to let you in on who is lurking behind the loincloth,” she writes. “It’s me, Raquel: a woman not unlike you in many ways and singular in others. Like we all are. Hello there! Nice to meet you.” Following a separation with her fourth husband, Richard Palmer, Welch wrote in “Beyond the Cleavage,” “I don’t think I’m a good candidate for wifedom. I like my independence too much.” Her book also includes a nostalgic recollection of her high school years in La Jolla. “I enrolled in La Jolla High School, which was only three blocks away from the famous Windansea surfing beach!” she wrote. “From the high school’s secondstory windows, my classmates could check out the coastline to see if the surf was up.” Adrian Newell, buyer and manager on the book side of Warwick’s, said that she considers Welch a positive role model for women, especially as they approach middle age. “She exudes so much confidence,” Newell said. “She sends a really great message to our youth-obsessed culture that it’s not about the number. It’s about how you see yourself and the world.”

Newell, 54, also said she “couldn’t believe how great” Welch looked. “It’s phenomenal,” she said. “She talks a lot about all the aspects of taking care of yourself — mentally, physically, and emotionally. She takes care of the whole package, and that positive energy she feels exhibits itself in the way she looks.” Considering Welch’s local roots, Newell said the size of the crowd and duration people were willing to wait for a meeting did not surprise her. “She’s a great role model, and I think a lot of people here know her from childhood and high school,” she said.

YouTube channel, where it generated more than 2,000 views within a week. Meanwhile, the curious guest made himself at home. “He parked himself right in front of the door, then came inside and crawled around the machine,” Bludworth said. “He wasn’t bothering anybody. We fed him some squid that we got from Birch Aquarium, which he swallowed right down. Then he passed out on the floor and napped for a few hours, waking up periodically to explore and urinate a few times.” Bludworth assumed responsibility for the sea lion’s welfare during the animal’s nearly five-hour stay at the development center. “I didn’t get much work done at all,” Bludworth said. “I just acted as a buffer between him and people and kept him out of harm’s way. We have a lot of sharp materials, so I wanted to make sure he didn’t get cut.” Bludworth called SeaWorld in the morning to request a pickup for the sea lion. “I noticed he was tagged and had a number shaved into his side,” Bludworth said. “When the SeaWorld employee came to pick him up, he said, ‘You again!’ so he had obviously seen him before.” Despite several hours out of water, the sea lion was thought to be in good health. “SeaWorld said the fact that he ate the squid was a good sign and that as long as they’re eating, they’re probably okay,” Bludworth said. The sea lion’s prolonged visit was partially due to earlier rescues that day. “The SeaWorld employee had a pup in the back of his truck who was trying to cross Prospect Street earlier that day,” Bludworth said. “They’ve gotten pretty brave around here, especially since they’ve pretty much taken over the Children’s Pool.” Bludworth has worked at the development center since 2005, but said he has not seen anything like this previously. The Marine Science Development Center has been dedicated to the design and creation of high-quality custom hardware to support academic and private sector researchers since the early days of the Scripps Institute.

Last-minute donations rescue fire pits FIRE PITS CONTINUED FROM Page 1
BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS
“The preservation of the fire pits ensures that the celebration of families and friends around a campfire will continue. This is about our quality of life and why we live here,” he said. District 1 Councilwoman Lightner said she hopes all San Diego residents and visitors will take advantage of the fire pits, and she urged them to donate now so that the pits do not face the same threat next year. “It costs $650 to maintain one fire pit per year,” she said. “I hope everyone will step up and sponsor a pit today so we can continue to offer this resource.” Faulconer echoed Lightner’s words on the importance of accruing donations for next year, and said he was proud of the team effort San Diego displayed in saving the fire pits for another year. “We’re not talking about a lot of money, but it’s the small things that make San Diego special,” he said. “Our fire pits are a part of that fabric.” In an effort to trim the city’s budget, Sanders eliminated the funding to maintain the La Jolla Shores, Mission Bay and Ocean Beach fire pits in 2008. A private, anonymous donor funded the project for 18 months following that decision, and those funds expire June 30 of this year. The money collected for this year’s maintenance will pay for the fire pits from July 1 this year to June 30, 2011. Funding for the $120,500 needed per year to fund the city’s fire pits comes in the form of $90,000 from The San Diego Foundation’s Mission Bay Park Endowment Fund, $4,700 from The La Jolla Community Foundation, $16,452 from Faulconer’s District 2, and $6,452 from Lightner’s District 1. An additional $2,896 will be used from individual donors who gave to the Save The Fire Pit Fund.

While the controversy over the Children’s Pool remains unsettled, the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) addressed potential solutions at its monthly meeting May 6. District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner presented four proposals that included: a local coastal program amendment to close the beach during seal-pupping season from Dec. 15 to May 15; an emergency coastal development permit to keep the rope barrier in place year-round; a permanent dog ban on the beach; and seeking private funding to hire a park ranger to supervise the area and manage a city-sanctioned volunteer docent program. Citing the expenses necessary to pay for barriers coupled with the absence of reported violence between humans and seals, Lightner said “there seems no urgent need to make changes at this time.” Nearly 20 local residents spoke before the LJCPA, and perspectives ranged from animal rights activists to fifth-generation La Jollans with a family history of learning to swim in the pool. A few surfers, swimmers and divers expressed concern that the growing seal population acts as “shark bait” and increases the likelihood of attacks on humans. The most popular option among the parties seemed to be hiring a park ranger to regulate the pool and act as a mediator between humans and seals — an idea board members approved in a 14-01 vote. Not all attendees, however, wanted to seek private funding to achieve the end result. “As a La Jollan, I’m tired of funding everything ourselves,” said board member Orrin Gabsch. “It’s about time we get a divorce from this city.” The LJCPA also approved Children’s Pool-related motions to clean the beach and open artificial channels periodically; to seek funding from groups like SeaWorld and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) — entities that often release wildlife near the site — to be used for its maintenance; and to protect all other beaches in La Jolla exclusively for public use. Board members voted against the permanent dog ban, as well as the motions to keep the rope barrier in place year round and to close the beach from Dec. 15 to May 15 during seal-pupping season. Motions will be heard by the City Council on Monday, May 17 at 6 p.m. in the Sherwood Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 700 Prospect St. The public is invited to attend and comment.

In response to the city’s approval of the demolition of the two-story, 57-yearold Neptune Place apartment complex by Windansea Beach, officials with the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) and the La Jolla Historical Society will fight the decision. The LJCPA voted against the property owners’ plan to build 24 condominiums within a three-story complex with two floors of underground parking. City officials overruled the LJCPA’s recommendation. LJCPA President Joe LaCava said a formal appeal has already been filed and that a hearing before the Planning Commission is scheduled for June 3. “I will represent the CPA and their position that this project fails to comply with the community plan, specifically the bulk and scale aspects,” LaCava said. “The project is too massive in size relative to the development in that area, and it is out of scale with proximity to the ocean front street and its relationship to the ocean.” If the Planning Commission — which oversees the appeals procedure — agrees with the LJCPA, the project will be denied. However, even if the Planning Commission rejects the appeal, LaCava said, “there is an opportunity for others to file a subsequent appeal to the City Council on environmental grounds.” Members of the La Jolla Historical Society also plan to attend the June 3 meeting, although the group was not involved in filing the appeal. “Unfortunately, we missed out on the chance to appeal directly because we were not notified,” said Angeles Leira, a
member of the Historical Society’s Preservation Committee. Leira said that despite a recommendation that a historical study be completed when the city initially requested that the society review the project, no such action was taken. “If a property is more than 45 years of age, that triggers a very short, 10-day review by city staff and the society,” Leira said. “At the end of the 10 days, a decision is made to either request additional information or allow the property to be demolished.” If the project cannot be approved after 10 days, the city requests the applicant to pay for a professional study done by a historian to be included in the environmental review. Leira said the historical society’s concerns reflect the fact that “this building is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, apartment buildings at Windansea. The architecture is Early Modern and has some Craftsman details. There may be a historically significant feature, a noteworthy architect that designed it, or some important people in the community that were involved in the funding or construction.” Such questions would be answered in the historical study. However, Leira said, “Enough questions remain that are not clearly answered. We need to know before this thing disappears from the face of the earth.” If a study produces no historically significant details, Leira said the society would give the demolition and condominium project its blessings. “If there is no historical significance, that’s okay,” she said. “We just want the record to be clear.”
NEWS NEWSbriefs City to hear Children’s Pool proposals In another chapter of the controversy surrounding the fate of the Children’s Pool, the City Council will consider items that include closing the beach during pupping season from Dec. 15 to May 15, seeking a coastal development permit to keep the rope barrier up year-round, seeking private funding to hire a park ranger to patrol and supervise a citysanctioned volunteer docent program at the pool, and banning dogs on the beach 24 hours per day year round. The public is invited to attend and participate during the public comment portion of the hearing, which will take place May 17 at 6 p.m. in the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Sherwood Auditorium, 700 Prospect St.
BirdStock swoops into Bird Rock Following its decision to cancel this year’s Taste of Bird Rock event, the annual community party that became too successful for its own good, the Bird Rock Community Council is drafting plans for a local event called BirdStock that council President Joe Parker said will encourage fellowship and fundraising. The event, planned for Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at Bird Rock Elementary School and the adjoining park as a dedication of the Waverly Gate project completed in late 2009, “will be nothing close to the size or scale of Taste of Bird Rock,” Parker said. To celebrate the project, which provided a separate, handicap-accessible entrance to the park from Waverly Avenue, attendees will be invited to purchase dedication tiles to decorate the wall along the park’s entrance and enjoy live entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m. The money generated will benefit the elementary school. OPINION
THURSDAY · MAY 13, 2010 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
Reporter says goodbye for now BY ADRIANE TILLMAN I am writing to say goodbye to the readers, hardworking activists and wonderful shop owners of La Jolla. I continue to chase my boyfriend all over the country as his job took us to New York City, back to La Jolla and now to Oakland. I reported for the La Jolla Village News for a few years beginning in 2005 when residents were deciding whether to establish the maintenance assessment district (M.A.D) in Bird Rock and while the boulevard was torn up awaiting roundabouts. I reported on residents’ fierce opposition to building a three-story project on Bird Rock Avenue in a two-story zone. When I returned to the newspaper in 2009, I found La Jolla Boulevard flourishing with flowers and enterprising businesses like Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, Beaumont’s Eatery, Tap Fever Studios and Elizabeth Allen Atelier, among others. I discovered the namesake of the community — the rock covered with birds — and the tide pools below. In the summer, I took leisurely swims out to the rock and headed north for other pocket beaches. I experienced the crushing power of the waves at Windansea and the swells at Boomer’s Beach, which were ideal for bodysurfing. I listened to many compelling authors discuss their world views ADRIANE TILLMAN and writings at Warwick’s Books, and thoroughly enjoyed some whiskey, Irish harp music and Yeats poetry at D.G. Wills Books on St. Patrick’s Day. I ate at Jack’s once before it closed overnight. La Jolla is a never-ending discovery. The activists and volunteers who are dedicated to preserving its character and helping it develop thoughtfully are awe-inspiring. If Joe La Cava, president of the La Jolla Community Planning Association and a man seemingly everywhere-at-all-times, ever retires from his civic work, the Village should name a structure or dedicate a monument in his honor. I’ve had the privilege of meeting Philomène Offen, who is singlehandedly trying to piece together the history of Bird Rock at her small exhibit inside Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. I was struck by the dedication of Esther Viti, chair of the Nell Carpenter Beautification Committee, whose mission is to keep the Village tidy and uncluttered. I am impressed by the culinary passion of La Jolla native, 32year-old Arturo Kassel and his business partners, who are committed to sourcing local food for their popular restaurant Whisknladle and bistro Prep Kitchen. High school physics teacher Martin Teachworth kept popping up on my radar screen because his relentless efforts to turn his students into mathematicians and scientists made good news. Correction In an article titled “This La Jolla spa offers ‘sanctuary’ from daily stress” in the May 6 issue, the owner of SK Sanctuary was misidentified. His correct name is Stephen M. Krant, F.A.C.S. Also, in the editor’s note, we failed to mention that Dr. Krant won the La Jolla Village News Readers Choice Award for Best Cosmetic Surgeon, and that SK Sanctuary won Best Day Spa. The write-ups for those winners were not printed in the original Readers Choice supplement.

LJHS swim and dive teams prep for post-season BY LEE CORNELL | VILLAGE NEWS With city and CIF championships just around the corner, the La Jolla High School (LJHS) swim and dive teams are once again prepared to make a run at the title. “I think we’re going to be right there with the top four or five teams in the county,” said head coach Tom Atwell. Last year, the LJHS boys’ team took home the CIF crown. After losing several stars to graduation, the squad has used a more all-around approach this season. Relying more on its depth, the team has steadily improved throughout the spring and Atwell said he has enjoyed the challenge of keeping his team competitive. “This year it’s more of a team effort,” Atwell said. “It’s been kind of fun this year because the fourth- and fifth-place finishes have really mattered.” The Vikings might not boast the same number of heavy hitters as they did in 2009 but there is still some serious talent lurking in the LJHS pool. Leading the way for the boys is Eric Hedlin, a speedster who has a chance to break the school and CIF record in the 500 freestyle. “My goal for the end of this year is the school record and for my senior year, the CIF record,” Hedlin said. Hedlin’s talent has brought confidence to the rest of the team. Outside the cozy confines of La Jolla, the junior has also found success on the international level. He will be competing this summer in Barcelona and also has legitimate expectations to make Canada’s team in the 2016 Olympics — not bad for a local who moved to the area when he was just a month old. Another standout competing for the Vikings is Alex Polyak. The senior is

A multi-dimensional swimmer, she regularly competes in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. This may sound like a lot of swimming, but the senior takes her heavy workload in stride. “I train to swim a lot of events so I’m prepared for it,” Knight said. SPORTS Junior Olympians set to race to the finish BY HILLARY SCHULER-JONES | VILLAGE NEWS Children from nine local elementary schools will fill Edwards Stadium at La Jolla High School on Sunday, May 16 for the 19th annual Junior Olympics, sponsored by Kiwanis Club of La Jolla. Last year’s event drew more than 700 participants between the ages of 5 and 12. Organizers anticipate an even bigger turnout this year. Jeanine Volinski, who has volunteered with the event since its inception, said watching the enthusiastic participants keeps her coming back each year. “[My favorite part] is the expressions on the kids’ faces. They’ve got their tongues stuck out while they’re throwing a softball or they’re just smiling earto-ear when they’re coming out of the tunnel at the obstacle course … they’re just having a blast,” Volinski said. Students can choose to compete in a variety of events, including the softball
throw, an obstacle course and track events in one of five age divisions. The final races of the day will determine La Jolla’s fastest boy and fastest girl; each participant in that competition is nominated by their school to represent fellow students in a 400-meter race. Winners of those races will receive trophies, while the top-three finishers in each of the other events receive medals. All students will receive ribbons for the events they participate in and the school with the highest percentage of participants will take home the Spirit Award trophy. The Kiwanis Club raises funds for the event throughout the year, primarily through La Jolla Kiwanis Pancake Day and the La Jolla Half Marathon. Volinski said the Kiwanis Club hopes to promote healthy competition at the event, starting with having all of the kids recite the Olympic oath. “We just want it to be a pure track
experience, like a grown-up track experience,” Volinski said. “We don’t give out T-shirts. We don’t sell anything that has our logo on it. We don’t charge admission …We want all the kids to come have a good time and compete with good sportsmanship.” The event is free and open to students at all nine La Jolla-area elementary schools — The Gillispie School, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, La Jolla Elementary, Stella Maris Academy, The Evans School, The Children’s School, All Hallows Academy and the San Diego French American School. Students are asked to pre-register through their school, but Volinski said on-site registration will be available. Check-in begins at 7:15 a.m., and the events will begin at 8:30 a.m. For more information, call Avelino Cortina at (858) 431-6431 or Jeanine Volinski at (858) 456-2266.

In an ongoing struggle to redefine the development blueprint governing La Jolla Shores, the Visions Committee, appointed by the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA), met May 5 to discuss options for future revisions. Some community members have criticized the document — called the planned district ordinance (PDO) — for lacking language strong enough to curtail unwanted development in the area. Unlike the city’s base zones, which specifically regulate floor area ratio (FAR) to restrict development to 50 or 60 percent of a lot’s area, the La Jolla Shores PDO was left intentionally vague to preserve the rights of property owners and avoid what committee member and past LJSA chair Jim Heaton calls a “cookie-cutter appearance,” where all estates are held to the same rigid standards. In recent years, however, the subjectivity of the Shores PDO has allowed major development and renovations that some residents fear will threaten the charm and quality of life in the area. Buildings that take up too much space on a lot or add certain features, they argue, can block valuable ocean views, reduce privacy and seriously alter the overall landscape of the community. For example, the language of the PDO allows for renovations deemed “minor in scope,” which Heaton said allows any project falling under this category to be “fast-tracked through the system” and earn city approval. “We are working with the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) to determine, specifically, what is truly minor in scope, because minor in scope is not satisfactorily defined,” Heaton said. While the LJSA has submitted to the
city a proposed amendment limiting “minor in scope” to renovations under 800 square feet, Heaton said the guideline is not enough to protect from unwanted development and the PDO may require additional revisions. “What we will see is 500- or 700square-foot additions back to back to back — serial minor revisions done consecutively,” Heaton said, resulting in development that becomes substantial over time or allowing for additions that seem minor but have major implications for other residents. Barry Graceman, a member of the La Jolla Shores Association Board, said the group is reviewing PDOs of other “successful” communities, including Del Mar, Carmel and Santa Barbara’s Montecito area, to find the best possible language that will preserve both the rights of property owners and the community’s charm. “We are looking at different communities that we think are similar to ours and have done a pretty darn good job of controlling undesirable growth,” Graceman said. Robert Whittemore, a LJCPA board member, said he is interested in guidelines that protect private views in addition to public corridors. “Protecting private views generally hasn’t been done by the city,” Whittemore said. “But that’s the direction these [other] successful communities are going.” Many of the other communities’ PDOs include pictures and diagrams that portray “appropriate” versus “inappropriate” massing. “La Jolla Shores was not designed around consistent setbacks, and we’re not pursuing that,” Heaton said. “We want to provide a very rough outline to garnish support to go forward, and craft the best thinking using similar pictures
and diagrams.” Tim Lucas, a LJCPA and LJSA board member, said emerging development technology continually provides new obstacles that may not be anticipated when ordinances are drafted. “What is possible now was not possible in the 1950s, and we will have technology later in this century that we don’t have today,” Lucas said. “We need to look into the future and ask ourselves, what would be the ideal La Jolla Shores? Then we need find the best way to accomplish that vision.” Because a revision to the PDO could take up to two years to be approved by various authorities, the LJSA hopes the City Attorney’s Office will determine that the numerical constraints of the base zones are applicable to La Jolla Shores to provide more immediate protection. “Making the base zones applicable would provide instant, minimum protection while the PDO review and potential revisions are underway,” Heaton said. Committee member Cynthia Bond said stricter regulations are needed not to constrain property owners, but to protect them from surrounding development. “We’re not trying to limit people’s financial opportunities for selling their properties,” she said. “We’re trying to preserve the quality of life in this community. That discrepancy has been the source of many contentious remarks.” Heaton said the LJSA’s intent to consider and pursue additional revisions have been “fully vetted by the community, the La Jolla Shores Advisory Board, the CPA, and everyone agrees that this is what needs to happen. It will continue to be a very public process.” The issue was on the agenda of an LJSA meeting on Wednesday, May 12. For more information, visit www.ljsa.org.

BY CHARLENE BALDRIGE | VILLAGE NEWS Three chances remain to see J*Company Youth Theatre’s excellent production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1957 made-for-television musical “Cinderella.” Directed by Joey Landwehr, it plays on stage through Sunday at La Jolla’s Jewish Community Center. Leading players are between 12 and 13 years old. Hallie Bodenstab and Keila Ashkenasi, who portray the wicked Stepmother and the Queen, respectively, are 13-year-old students at Muirlands Middle School. La Jolla Village News attended the matinee performance on Mother’s Day. There were many mothers and dads and princesses in the audience. Some wore glittery pink tennis shoes, and some sported party dresses on top of their play clothes. Mothers and grandmothers wore tiaras and one babe in arms was so tiny it resembled a child’s baby doll. The little girl sitting next to this critic was attending her first musical and received clapping lessons from mom prior to the performance. She performed beautifully and stayed awake for the entire musical, which lasted around two hours. The first impressive voice was that of Jonas McMullen, who announced “The prince is giving a ball!” He was soon joined by the chorus of townspeople, correctly surmising that the lonely prince (baritone David Ahmadian, 12, of Carmel Valley Middle School) would pick a bride from the village maidens who attended. Cinderella’s wicked stepmother (the excellent Hallie Bodenstab, whose voice has a rich quality) preps her imperious daughters (Celia Tedde, 12, of San Diego Cooperative Charter School and Ilana Engel, 13, of San Diego Jewish Academy) for the ball. All three are cruel to Cinderella (Hannah Houts), whose godmother (Samantha Tullie, 12, of Solana Santa Fe) dresses her for the ball, providing coach and footmen as in the beloved Perrault fairy tale. Houts possesses a well-employed soprano voice and a lovely stage demeanor. As her prince, Ahmadian also sings well a n d m a n a ge s t o l o o k ardent, not an easy feat for a man so young. The production, adapted for pre-high school students, looks impressive enough, and all the players are involved to the hilt, moving well and sounding good in all the ensemble numbers. The young people in the audience no doubt

appreciate all the special effects and the fancy gowns as well as numerous pratfalls. The music is easily identifiable as that of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Due to its brevity, uncomplicated nature and familiarity, “Cinderella” makes a grand introduction to the theater and is great family entertainment. Remaining performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 15, and 1 and 4:40 p.m. Sunday, May 16 at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, Jacobs Family Campus, 4126 Executive Drive. Tickets are $113 for children and $17 for adults and are available online at www.sdcja.org/jcompany or by calling the JCC box office, (858) 362-1348.
BY ADRIANE TILLMAN | VILLAGE NEWS Students danced, marched, sang and delivered spoken-word poetry across the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) campus May 7 to respond to the mock Compton Cookout party and display of a noose and Klu Klux Klan-style hood in March that fanned racial tension and enraged students and staff. The Department of Theatre and Dance staged “Arts in Action Festival: Real Art for Real Change” to create a critical lens through which to view the racial incidents and to help create a sense of community so the university could move forward, said organizer and MFA candidate Aimee Zygmonski. The arts festival also aimed to challenge and “interrogate” the use of stereotypes in comedy. “Arts are very effective in creating social change,” Zygmonski said, pointing to the political plays the El Teatro Campesino staged to propel the farm workers movement in California. MFA candidate Kyle Sorensen choreographed a “flash mob” dance, which his troupe performed throughout the week at random spots on campus — including the middle of lunch at the cafeteria. Dancers moved through eras of protest from sister suffragettes doing the “mash potato” to James Brown pumping his fists in the air to proclaim “I’m black; I’m proud.” At the end, the dancers dispersed nonchalantly as though an organized crowd of people hadn’t been dancing in the middle of the cafeteria at all. Chicano muralist Mario Torero worked on an “Arts in Action” mural and students pieced together murals they had created during the week at each of the six colleges. At a forum, students and faculty discussed questions like, “Is a racially-themed party a performance?” and what it means to be “color blind.” Art is more effective when it’s created and displayed outdoors in the middle of people’s lives, Zygmonski said. “It’s much more of a visceral reaction when you’re in the middle of the UCSD campus doing a devised piece of theater as opposed to working with a traditional script and traditional costumes,” Zygmonski said.

Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas When the Americans entered the campaign in North Africa in 1942, they enlisted the help of one Salah Hassanein, a brave, young Egyptian man who, at the age of 19, was already recognized as a community leader. He aided the Allies, much to his own peril. Years later, Salah was able to come to the U.S. where he eventually got into the theater business — first as an usher and soon afterward as an executive of major movie theater chains. Salah now resides in Del Mar with famed British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes. Always philanthropic, he founded — and still chairs — Varity Children’s Lifeline International. More recently, he noticed that although Lifeline could cure diseased people in thirdworld countries, they would become reinfected after returning to their home communities because their local water supplies were terribly contaminated. Through research, he found that a water purification system capable of serving 2,500 people for about 10 to 12 years could be built for about $20,000. In response to the Asian tsunami, Salah and Zandra founded Water for Life International to deploy water treatment systems for disaster relief. Noting that more than 350 million people in SubSaharan Africa don’t have access to clean water, they also started Water for Africa, which will provide sustainable water purification systems for communi-
ties in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. To help fund this program, a gala dinner and auction at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club attracted an overflow crowd and raised enough money for about 10 systems — a very good start! The upscale partygoers — several dressed in African attire — enjoyed African-inspired hors d’oeuvres during a cocktail reception and silent auction. Entertainment included ethnicallyappropriate music and dance. A video presentation showed the magnitude of the water troubles, but the key line was “We can solve this problem.” Dinner featured an entrée of seared and grilled lamb chops and loin, with fragrant basmati rice and pomegranate ratatouille. A live auction, offering seven interesting items and the opportunity to pledge funds to help the cause, drew a great financial response. Afterward, guests were rewarded with a refreshing mango tart and Meyer lemon crème dessert — and the right to feel that they had helped give people hope for a healthier life through clean water. ••• Las Patronas’ 64th annual Jewel Ball, “Heart + Soul,” is coming up soon (Aug. 7), and will pay tribute to supporters who are the heart and soul of the San Diego community. LP President Tracy Lyon welcomed guests to a breakfast event at the Hotel Parisi, where 2010 Jewel Ball Chair Lise Wilson, with cochairs Kristi Pieper and Lisa Albanez, introduced the theme and design for the event. Ball designer Kimberly Lee and table designer Julie Matibag unveiled décor details with a visual presentation and a humorous skit. If these ladies get their way (and they usually do), expect Lucite chairs and tables (with glowing bases), and big floral lights. The bridge will be a giant lighted waterfall. It will all be spectacular — so reserve early and don’t miss it!

HEALTH · BEAUTY · FASHION · FUN Footloose - The Musical Welk Theatre Open till June 27th The Welk Resorts Theatre proudly announces the casting of Footloose – The Musical opening May 6th – June 27th The Welk has assembled a cast of seasoned veterans whose credits include Broadway, Touring and Regional theatre, professionals for Los Angles and San Diego and some new, fresh talent from San Diego and Orange County. Broadway veteran Cynthia Ferrer, local professional and favorite Eileen Bowman and a cast of 14 others round this spectacular cast of singing and dancing energies! Based on the 1984 musical film starring Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow, this Tony Award nominated musical characterizes the youth in all of us that just wants to “cut loose” and not be bound by the challenges and obstacles that life might present us. It is a heartfelt journey that reflects the survivor in everyone; representing the joy, the trials and tribulations, the love, and the passion to follow ones dreams – all rooted in the necessity of family representing the power to rise from tragedy with reason, purpose and integrity. Filled with classic songs by Dean Pitchford, Tom Snow and Kenny Loggins, this musical jukebox brings out an energy and drive like no other musical. Let’s Hear It For the Boy, Almost Paradise, Holding Out for a Hero and the explosive title song Footloose are just a few of the iconic songs brought to life in this dance driven piece. These energetic and moving songs, each a pop single in their own right, are woven dramatically in a dynamic and entertaining way into the show’s story. Opening May 6th – June 27th at the Welk Resort San Diego Theatre.
damaging effects of ultraviolet rays. And if you already have sun damage or other signs of aging skin, there are several new products on the market to help rejuvenate skin and treat dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles. Be Smart in the Sun The standard sunscreen recommendations haven’t changed: use a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 when you are having fun outside, even on cloudy days. Reapply it every two hours or more, especially if you sweat or go swimming. What has changed? If you dislike using sunscreen because it seems to make your face and skin appear white or pasty, you may like the newer sunscreens with micronized particles containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These new formulations minimize the white pigment residue that was common in the older formulations of sunscreens. Less white pigment means more natural color shows through. Many of these sunscreens can now be found at your dermatologist’s office, including Elta Md sunscreen. Also, be on the lookout for new sunscreens on the market containing antioxidants such as Vitamin A, C, E and green tea to help reduce some of the sun’s damage. A few of these sunscreens are already available and there will be
even more over the next six months. Examples of sunscreens currently with these ingredients include Jan Marini, Citrix, and Neutrogena. Darrell Gonzales, M.D., is a dermatologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Join Dr. Gonzales for a free presentation on skin care and sun protection entitled “Loving the Skin You are In” on April 1 at the Schaetzel Center at Scripps La Jolla. • Swarovski crystals stitched into the center of tiny floral appliqués. .• Larger crystals continue to embellish gowns, from neck to hem. But these sparkly details are being used more organically and in clear crystal, rather than the icy silver of mirror-backed crystals or rhinestones used to create a defined pattern. • Soft petals continue to be a favorite decoration for the romantic gowns. • Oversized clusters of flower "corsages" are another big trend, and they are primarily being used as accents on waistlines or shoulders. • We will see lots of asymmetry, both in the form of one shoulder gowns and strapless dresses with asymmetrical draping on the bodice. • Dramatic low waistlines continue to be hot with ruched, gathered or draped bodices that hug the figure in the most flattering ways.

Rose Creek Cottage A lasting treasure of Pacific Beach, the Rose Creek Cottage has been hosting weddings and events for nearly 90 years. Built in the 1920s as a dining room addition to Fredrick Tudor Scripps’ estate house. Now the Catamaran Hotel, in 1955, the property was sold to Vernon Taylor and Clinton McKinnon for a hotel. The old home was razed in 1959. The dining room was spared and became the Catamaran Wedding Chapel. Three decades later, the chapel stood in the way of proposed expansion. An agreement was secured with the Navy to lease a patch of land at the bottom of Garnet near Rose Creek, where it sits today. The "Cottage" is beginning to host third generation weddings for locals and, thanks to the Internet, is planning events for people from all over the world. Mark & Maggie Johnston of Wedding & Event Designers manage the Rose Creek Cottage for the Pacific Beach Town Council. They help people arrange for everything they will need for an elegant yet affordable event. The Cottage can accommodate up to 75 guests. Mark & Maggie can arrange for full service catering, cake, flowers, photography, limo, music, officiant…everything but the groom! (858) 490-0468 2525 Garnet Ave. rosecreekcottage.net
Wedding Style DJ Entertainment My love of music started when I was young. My mom had lots of 45's and even some 78's (wish I had them now they'd be worth a small mint) anyway... for years, I was the one playing music at our family holiday parties. I'm guessing I got my "Host" genes from my Mom, I just had not realized it yet. Stationed at Little Rock AFB in the late 70's. I befriended the vinyl toting weekend DJ "Wildman Steve" at the Airmen’s club. I really dug what he did and got my first taste of the "thrill of the scream", when I filled in for him for a bathroom break. The "thrill of the scream?..." that's when a dancing floor full of people collectively scream, cheer and dance it up when you play a popular hit, just at the right time. I still love it when that happens, that to this day. Get your PARTY started. Be it your first, or your one hundred and first, It will be the EVENT of the year if you start right here.
