He may be small, but Charlie Hutchison, 3½, a Pacific Beach resident, knows how to think big. Along with his older brother, Andrew, 7, and his parents, Neil and Margot, he helped La Jolla United Methodist Church Nursery School (LJUMCNS), where he is a student, raise $446 at a used book sale on May 5 and 6 to memorialize his 9-year-old brother, Samuel Thomas Hutchison. Sam passed away March 12 from the effects of neuroblastoma, a vicious cancer common in infants and children, after a battle that lasted more than half his life. Liza Olmert, a LJUMCNS board member, said the sale was planned last fall as part of a series of fundraisers held throughout the year while Sam was still fighting the disease. “When Sam passed away, we decided to hold the sale as a way to honor him,” Olmert said. “We wanted this to be a way for the community to commemorate his impact.” All proceeds from the sale benefit Magic Water, Inc., a nonprofit corporation started by the Hutchison family in 2007 to raise funds that would enable families to explore alternate treatments in a field where straightforward cures are unheard of. The foundation’s name originated from a young girl’s parents who described chemotherapy as “magic water” that would eliminate the pain she experienced as a result of cancer. To date, it has raised more than $1 million.

Sam’s parents describe him as a diehard competitive, staunchly cheerful, active and insightful 9-year old with an insatiable zest for life. His favorite hobbies included “any sports, really,” Margot said, with soccer, football, biking, hiking, swimming, skateboarding and Razor scootering topping the list. He also loved playing with his brothers, reading, video games, chess, Scrabble, assembling science projects and indulging in his favorite food — tacos. Andrew had a hard time selecting a favorite quality of Sam’s. “Everything about him was so special,” he said. “He always helped

The 29-foot cross that crowns Mount Soledad may continue to foster controversy, but that won’t prevent the Mount Soledad Memorial Association from holding a ceremony on Monday, May 31 to honor United States war veterans. The event, which marketing representative Bob Phillips expects to attract a crowd of about 1,000, including District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner of La Jolla, will last from 2 to 3:15 p.m. at the Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial. The service will commemorate the sacrifices of Medal of Honor recipient Army Col. Robert Howard with a plaque to be installed on the Veterans Wall. Howard, who is believed to be one of the most heavily-decorated American veterans in recent history, served five tours of duty during the Vietnam War and was nominated for the Medal of Honor three separate times for different acts. Wounded 14 times 54 months, he received the honor in 1971 from President Richard M. Nixon. He also received eight purple hearts, four bronze stars and two distinguished service crosses. La Jolla researchers create synthetic cell In an announcement that has sparked mixed commentary from scientists, ethicists and Vatican officials, researchers at the J. Craig Venter Institute said May 20 they have succeeded in creating the world’s first self-renewing artificial life form. The cell’s genetic material was first designed on a computer, then chemically produced in a laboratory and finally injected in a recipient cell that replicated itself in a traditional fashion. The announcement comes after 15 years of research, and marks an important milestone for genetic engineering. Synthetic Genomics Inc., which J. Craig Venter founded, funded the research and owns all associated intellectual property rights.

Bird Rock Elementary is ‘distinguished school’ Bird Rock Elementary has earned the title of “distinguished school” by the state of California, and it plans to celebrate by inviting local residents and merchants to its community open house on Thursday, May 27. Participants are asked to meet in the auditorium at 5:30 p.m. and will then tour all classrooms, including the science and computer labs, art room and library. The event will also feature an art walk and celebratory popsicles in the Lunch Arbor. The award, which several other San Diego district schools have also received in years past, assesses a school’s progress during a three-year period and selects winners after a process of visiting and filing reports. Criteria include high performance on standardized tests and narrowing the achievement gap, or performance levels of students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and language abilities.

Albert Lin, a University of California, San Diego alumnus and researcher, will embark on his second trek to the steppes of Mongolia this summer to search for the tomb of Genghis Khan. He lamented the fact that so many photographs shot before the invention of digital cameras have been discarded, and that today’s digital photos often disappear into the nebulous online world without ever being printed.

PROPOSITION D: PRO AND CON

Prop D would create accountability By Councilman Carl DeMaio On June 8, San Diego voters will have an important opportunity to advance commonsense reform in our financially troubled city government by voting “yes” on Proposition D. Prop D would enhance accountability at City Hall by making the strong mayor/strong council form of government permanent. This form of government creates clear roles and responsibilities. The mayor would serve as head of the executive branch, overseeing management of city departments day-to-day. The City Council would serve as an independent legislative branch, formulating policy, making appropriations and conducting oversight. In 2004, voters approved a trial experiment in this form of government. Unless Prop D is passed, that trial would end — and the city would revert back to the outdated and discredited city manager form of government where there is little accountability or balance. Prop D does not just make permanent the strong mayor/strong council form of government. It makes significant improvements to how San Diego achieves that form of government. By giving the mayor a real veto, subject only to override by a two-thirds vote of the City Council, Prop D will bring important checks and balances to city government. With a real veto, the mayor will be able to check the parochial spending desires of each individual city councilmember. This system of government provides balance in another important way. The mayor, who is elected citywide, would run the executive branch while city councilmembers — elected by each individual council district — would run the legislature. San Diegans need to have both perspectives represented in their government and Prop D accomplishes this. Proposition D adds a ninth seat to the City Council to allow for a simple two-thirds vote for

League opposes Prop D as bad for San Diego

a veto override. While opponents of Prop D complain that the addition of a ninth City Council seat would cost money, adding a ninth seat will help ensure that important smaller neighborhoods continue to get a voice as the city’s population grows. The ninth seat can also be added without increased costs if we commit to splitting the existing individual council budgets up equitably. I have joined with Councilmember Kevin Faulconer to sponsor legislation that ensures a new council seat will be “cost neutral” in the city’s budget. Prop D would also prevent a return to the days when city bureaucrats were allowed to negotiate costly labor contracts with other city bureaucrats. Under the old city manager form of government, labor negotiations would be conducted by unelected city bureaucrats who personally benefit from the labor contracts they negotiate. This conflict of interest would be eliminated by Prop D — with the mayor serving as the city’s lead negotiator in labor negotiations. San Diego is still reeling from bad decisions made in city labor contracts that spiked pension benefits, increased salaries and awarded other costly perks. We should not go back to the form of government that facilitated those bad decisions. If Prop D does not pass, taxpayers will face higher city spending on a number of fronts. If the city returned to a city manager form of government, a duplicative bureaucracy would have to be created and added back into the city’s organizational structure. San Diego needs to make a number of reforms to restore its financial health and get back to providing the kinds of services our neighborhoods deserve. Prop D is one of those important reforms that voters should make on June 8.

Election Day is just around the corner. On June 8, voters will be deciding the fate of Proposition D — making permanent the strong-mayor form of government. Prop D is the controversial ballot measure that increases the size and cost of city government and turns our temporary strong-mayor system into a permanent form of governance for San Diego. The League of Women Voters recommends a NO vote on Prop D. Why? Proposition D would make the strong mayor the permanent form of governance in San Diego. Unfortunately, it goes much further than that. Prop D would also increase the size and cost of city government by requiring the creation of an additional council district and all that goes with it: additional office space, staff, salaries, pensions, benefits and a ninth City Council member. We’re asking you to ask yourself: does it make sense to expand San Diego city government when the city is flat broke — when road repairs, street maintenance, libraries, parks, lifeguards, police, firefighters and too many other neighborhood services are on the chopping block? Is

this the time to create bigger and more expensive government? To help you make an informed choice, we encourage you to go to League website at www.lwvsandiego.org. You’ll find an eye-opening report on the underside of our five-year experience with a strong-mayor form of government, as well as background information on Proposition D. You’ll also get a startling look at the “who’s who” of financial supporters of Prop D. After reading it, I think you’ll agree with the LWV that our city can’t afford Prop D — not financially, and not if you value the standards of good government espoused by the LWV. The LWV doesn’t have access to the hundreds of thousands of dollars accumulated by the special-interest supporters of Prop D to get the word out. Instead, we’re counting on neighbors telling neighbors, friends e-mailing friends and everyone else willing to stand up for good government in San Diego to vote NO on Prop D.

GUEST COMMENTARY

Heart health a serious matter — even for trained athletes One of the more common statements about people who suffer a heart attack or death during athletic competition is, “I thought he was so healthy.” This misconception of “being healthy” Dr. Chris Suhar simply because one engages in athletic competition, especially high-endurance competition, can often be misleading. The two athletes who suffered heart attacks in the La Jolla Half-Marathon this year once again bring to light the need for athletes to take their heart health seriously. Throughout history, physicians have often debated the benefits and risks of exercise. Interestingly, the mythical story of the Greek soldier who ran

the first marathon ended up dying from exhaustion after he completed his mission. Despite this outcome, the ancient philosophers still heralded the benefits of exercise. As the debate grew throughout the years, it was at the turn of the 19th century when physicians began to evaluate high-endurance athletes, discovering dilation and damage to the human heart. This led physicians to often discourage highendurance exercise, considering it extremely dangerous and deleterious to one’s health. It wasn’t until the mid-19th century when better research began to highlight the benefits of exercise including decrease in mortality, weight loss, cancer prevention, improvement in psychological well-being and reduction in cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. As the benefits of exercise became more prevalent, so did exercise.

Eventually high-endurance activities, such as marathons and triathlons, have become very popular — especially in San Diego. As the popularity of high-endurance competitive exercise has grown, so has the number of heart attacks and deaths suffered by amateur and professional athletes. So is exercise safe? In the United States, guidelines and requirements are in place to allow for better screening of high school and college athletes. However, no such guidelines or even recommendations exist for the adult athlete. The leading cause of death in the adult athlete is still coronary disease and a simple history and physical by a physician can assess for this risk. The adult athlete typically believes they are healthy and will often dismiss symptoms as a cramp or a sign of weakness. Furthermore, research has

She attended a local cooking class with Sam and Andrew “to try to match up my skills with his tastes,” she said. On Jan. 19, 2005, Sam was diagnosed with stage-four neuroblastoma and doctors found a tumor in his abdomen, three bone lesions and 95 percent packed bone

It comes in waves and there’s no right or wrong way.” “He changed a lot of lives and I still feel like the luckiest guy in the world that I got to be his dad” Neil said. “But it hurts every day and we’re just left trying to make some good come out of this.” One of Margot’s friends who lost a daughter to neuroblastoma offered the Hutchisons a piece of advice that they say Coping helps with that task. He was declared in remission in October 2005, but relapsed in August 2006, two weeks after Charlie was born. Neil and Margot scoured existing research for holistic treatments and clinical trials Sam could try, hoping something would improve their son’s condition. At one point, Sam was swallowing an average of 40 pills per day after Neil tested them on himself — an experiment that the Wall Street Journal documented in an article on the Hutchisons in 2007. After several more tumultuous rounds of triumph and despair, Sam passed away peacefully at home with his family on March 12 this year.

As the case awaits a delayed decision in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Phillips said he is optimistic in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to allow a memorial cross in Mojave Desert to remain— although it has since been stolen. “That was a single cross, whereas ours is an integrated memorial,” Phillips said. “The ruling was a positive one, but ultimately the courts will settle this matter.” “Meanwhile,” he added, “our mission continues to be the same, and that is to recognize veterans who have been honorably-discharged from the U.S. military.” The association has also recently begun to honor veterans from other countries who served in U.S. military

SPORTS Bishop’s sailor, coach making waves against the best BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS The Bishop’s School sophomore Jessie O’Dell is starting to make some waves in the world of sailing. A member of the Bishop’s sailing team, O’Dell is sailing locally to prepare for the SCIRA Women’s World Championship in Florida in November. “I’m totally psyched about that and it’s going to be so much fun,” O’Dell said. “I’m really, really excited.” On the water, O’Dell partners with Aine McLean Fretwell, a La Jolla resident who doubles as her coach at Bishop’s. The duo finished third in the USA Snipe Class Women’s National Championship held last month in Jacksonville, Fla., behind two boats that featured former Olympians. “It was just an unforgettable experience and it’s really cool to be around these incredibly good people and good role models,” O’Dell said. Although O’Dell has raced in her family’s large sailboat for six years, she has only been racing smaller 15-foot boats, known as snipes, for about a year and a half. O’Dell said sailing in snipes competitions, where all boats are the same, is all about tactics. “It’s like playing chess on the water. You can make one mistake and the whole fleet will eat you up,” O’Dell said. “You have to combine being fast and being smart. It definitely has the physical side to it, but it’s very strategic, too.” Despite their age difference, O’Dell and Fretwell have fostered a unique relationship that is equal parts player-coach, teammates and friends. It tends to be more businesslike on race days. “We’re really close. When we’re not racing we’re just always talking. She’s one of my best friends,” O’Dell said. As a member of Bishop’s year-round sailing team, O’Dell said the Knights’ boaters are like family. She said team sail-

La Jolla spring playoffs set Both Bishop’s and La Jolla Country Day are still alive in the Division IV baseball playoffs. On May 26, the No. 9-seeded Knights (14-11-1) played at top-seed Madison and the No. 6-seeded Torreys (21-8) played at No. 3 seed Mater Dei in the first round of the double-elimination championship. In boys’ volleyball, No. 2 seed La Jolla’s bid for a three-peat fell short in the Division III finals on May 22 as they were knocked off by top-seed Cathedral Catholic 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22. The Vikings finished the season 25-14. After beating Coronado 5-4 in the play-in round of the Division IV softball playoffs on May 22, La Jolla Country Day was eliminated from the double-elimination tournament with a pair of narrow losses in consecutive days. The Torreys (16-7) fell into the lower bracket with a 1-

0 nine-inning loss at No. 4 seed Palo Verde on May 24 and were eliminated by the same score the next day at Horizon. Bishop’s (10-13) lost 12-1 at Madison in the play-in round. In the girls’ lacrosse playoffs, La Jolla and Bishop’s both saw their seasons come to an end last weekend. The Vikings (7-11) lost 14-5 to No. 4-seed Poway in the first round on May 21. Bishop’s (136) got out of the first round with a 14-12 win at Santana on May 21, but the Knights were beaten the following day 19-6 by top-seed Torrey Pines. La Jolla Country Day advanced to the quarterfinals of the boys’ lacrosse playoffs before losing 12-0 at No. 3-seed Coronado on May 25. In the first round on May 22, the Torreys (15-4) beat San Marcos 11-9. — Anthony Gentile

ing has a different feel from two-person competition. “When you travel to a regatta you take your whole team with you and you only have two boats, so you rotate people in and out all the time,” O’Dell said. “It’s cool because you can watch for a little while.” Despite a strong showing at last month’s national championships, O’Dell said she sees some areas of improvement before her and Fretwell set sail against the world’s best. During the summer, she plans to sail as much as she can, splitting time between local waters and her hometown of Mammoth Lakes. During the summer, O’Dell will routinely make the six- to seven-hour drive with one of her parents. During the school year, she actually lives with her family on a boat, “Catalina 36,” docked in Harbor Island. “My life is all about water and sailing,” O’Dell said. And so far it has been smooth sailing for the local teen.

More Mother’s Days Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas Mother’s Day celebrations aren’t always on Sundays, you know … Now in its 20th year, Mama’s Kitchen is the only non-profit in San Diego that prepares and delivers three free meals a day to San Diego residents living with cancer or AIDS/HIV. Held the Friday before Mother’s Day, their annual Mama’s Day fundraiser set new records this year: it attracted almost 1,000 attendees, drew about 70 of the region’s top restaurants and chefs and netted more than $168,000, which will help provide nearly 60,000 meals for Mama’s Kitchen clients. Event co-chairs were Jennifer Kearns, Todd Gabello, Scott Gardner, along with co-chairs emerati Jeanne Jones, Jim Bowers, Elisabeth Bergan, and Don Caulfield. The venue, as always, was the Hyatt Regency La Jolla’s Barcino Pavilion. The event has become so big that it also occupies the adjacent patio and pool areas. This year, a VIP Poolside Cabana Lounge provided a place to relax and mix with other guests, including Sam Zien (otherwise known as TV’s “Sam the Cooking Guy”). The event was billed “An Extraordinary Culinary Evening.” That may sound a little pretentious — but it wasn’t! The talented chefs seemed to see it as an opportunity to showcase their talents and compete with each other. There

were so many wonderful dishes, with such beautiful presentation, that it was hard to pick a favorite — but at the San Diego Culinary Institute table, Chef Michelle Sabin plated up a trio of seared tuna creations that was a stunning work of art, in both flavor and appearance — and very hard to top! Hundreds of volunteers donate thousands of hours and drive thousands of miles for Mama’s Kitchen each year, making sure that clients receive the nutrition they deserve. The annual Mama’s Day event is a sumptuous feast for all who attend and provides important funding to help offset the organization’s operating expenses. *** On the Saturday before Mother’s Day, the La Jolla Debutante Committee did something exceptionally thoughtful and generous: they hosted a Mother’s Day brunch for 600 wives and children of Navy and Marine servicemen deployed overseas. It was no beach barbecue — holding true to their form, the committee hosted their guests at one of the best brunches in the area, in the Crown and Coronet Rooms of the Hotel Del Coronado. There were two seatings — one at 10:30 a.m. and another at noon. Besides the sumptuous repast, there was plenty of entertainment to keep the kids happy. Reginald Washington’s AWARE program for at-risk kids was there, and Frank Fernicola’s Big Animals for Little Kids showed up with Big Bird, Elmo, Pooh Bear, Tigger and numerous other “big animals” (really, bigger kids in intricate costumes), much to the delight of the guest children. Other activities included face painting and storytelling. Robert Gilson led a performance by the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra, and there were free photo booths for fun pictures. It’s safe to say a good time was had by all — especially the appreciative mothers.

LJ Art Association Gallery filled with passion and heart BY WILLIAM BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS Tucked away in La Jolla Shores at 8100 Paseo del Ocaso is a cute little, two-roomed gallery in a white brick building with blue trim where you can still find some quality art for a reasonable price. It’s the gallery of the La Jolla Art Association — which is the oldest art organization in San Diego. It was founded by Ellen Browning Scripps in 1918 at her home in conjunction with the artists and art lovers who attended her tea parties. The first official art gallery show was held in 1919 at the La Jolla Women’s Club and it has been going strong ever since. Many important San Diego artists have been affiliated with the La Jolla Art Association, including the well-

known plein-aire master Alfred Mitchell, who held his last show ever at the gallery in 1966. Today, there are more than 100 artists who are members of the association, which is run as a nonprofit co-op with members volunteering their time and energy to keep things running. In turn, they have the opportunity to display their work in the gallery on a rotating basis. Other noteworthy San Diego artists may also show their work through the gallery once they have passed the juried process. On May 17, the show on exhibit at the gallery was twofold. In the front room was a show titled Feminine Energy, described as an “energized artistic expression,” featuring the colorful art work of Tamara Straitland, Kris deYoung, Judi Sin and Aimee Jo. The back

room was devoted to the work of members of the Clairemont Art Guild. One of the Feminine Energy artists, Aimee Jo, was on hand at the gallery accompanied by her playful poodle puppy, Gabriel. Jo, who has been a member of the La Jolla Art Association for the past two years, said that she is an expressionist figurative artist who likes to work with the female form. She has been painting since she was 3 years old. “I paint part by imagination and part by life experience,” she said. Jo has a high regard for the Association. “Everyone involved puts their hearts into it,” she said. “All the members are living and painting from the heart — and show much humility.” Artist Aimee Jo, a member of the La Jolla Art Association, displays her work as part of the

The Bonair Cottages in La Jolla were green remodeling projects undertaken by Grunow Construction. The original internal doors were refinished and reinstalled, construction waste from the site of the two cottages was taken to Edco COURTESY PHOTO Recycling and renewable products were used when possible. Construction was completed in April 2009.

Grunow takes construction in a green direction BY DEBBIE HATCH | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla-based Grunow Construction recognizes the importance of green building while committing itself to the community. Thomas Grunow started the company 27 years ago. His son, Dan, has worked with the company for 10 years. Grunow Construction has remodeled many recognizable buildings such as the Bonair Cottages, The Bishop’s School and Copley Library. “We try to take a reuse, recycle, green approach,” Dan said. The company purchased the familiar Bonair Cottages at the corner of Bonair Street and La Jolla Boulevard and began construction in June 2008. “We take a house and try to emphasize the unique details of it,” said Dan of remodel projects. The Bonair Cottages were all encompassing green remodeling projects. Original internal doors were refinished and

reinstalled. Construction waste from the site of the two cottages was taken to Edco Recycling. Renewable products were used when possible. “They were in need of quite a bit of help,” Grunow said of the cottages. Construction was completed in April 2009. Dan Grunow believes that green construction will gradually become more economical and appealing to clients. “We’re all aware of how hard it is for homeowners to justify the costs,” said Dan of more environmentally-friendly building. “We want to offer these things to our clients in way that meets their needs,” he said. Dan said he expects the cost of electricity to continue to rise and he thinks gradually more clients will request green building to ensure lower bills in the future. “There are three aspects that create

the umbrella of green building,” he said. First, installs such products such as Duro-Last roofing systems. Its higher reflectivity lends to lower energy costs for the cooling of a structure. The quick growth of bamboo makes it a popular renewable resource for use in floors and furniture and Grunow Construction attempts to restore existing doors whenever possible. “You’ve saved something from going to the landfill,” Dan said. The second aspect is maximizing the efficiency of space, he said. Installing solar panels on the roof of a home is one way to maintain a localized efficiency.

“I feel like everyone can appreciate the third aspect the most,” Dan said. Maintaining clean interior air when working on a home or business is a priority for Grunow Construction. “We try and assist our clients by using tools that have vacuums,” he said. Workers maintain as clean a workspace as possible. “We make a special effort to cater to people’s needs,” Grunow said. Dan has found that working with designers and architects is advantageous, so the company can focus solely on the construction of the project, which is what works best for his clients. Grunow Construction likes to maintain the authenticity of the style of home while remodeling a project whenever possible. “Most of the time we try to stick with the design of the structure,” said Grunow. However, the company will accommodate their client’s needs.

Avalon Capital Group purchased the Copley Library and Grunow Construction is converting the library into an office space, complete with a wine cellar. “We try and stay focused in La Jolla,” Dan said. Father and son want to ensure the company doesn’t outgrow itself and is able to maintain contact with local clients. “We have all those guys who are out on the job site swinging hammers and wearing our shirts,” Dan said. There are five employees who work in the office, 14 in the field, as well as some subcontractors. Dan and his father are hands-on from the start of the project to the end. “We want to walk away with a friend, not a client,” Dan said. He is in the process of becoming LEED certified, which is a specialized certification that will allow him to verify that buildings are environmentally responsible.

“We don’t stop until it’s right.” – Tom Armstrong

Armstrong Construction: living and building coastal BY MEAGHAN CLARK | VILLAGE NEWS Tom Armstrong, a surfer and beach resident, thrives on living in the community in which he designs. He has been in the business since he was a teen and he has observed the construction business and cultivated ideas from all over the world. He has a portfolio that spans five decades and reaches from east to west, but if it were up to him, coastal homes would be his primary target. Armstrong has a knack for fantasy homes that focus on natural sunlight and the view. Homebuyers are all about keeping their residence cost-efficient with a Southern California theme. As Armstrong sees it, no matter the size of the home, residents love to keep the focus on one thing: the view. “The everyday life here [at the beach] is much different than other parts of the country,” Armstrong said. “People here are much more active and venture out of their homes to enjoy the array of parks, amusement, entertainment and our wonderful beaches.” While focusing on coastal homes, Armstrong Builders, Inc. remodels, builds and redesigns homes all over the country. “Our quality and competitive prices have kept us in the running” over the years, Armstrong said, adding that it isn’t just the money that keeps him in the business. “Regardless of who designed the remodels, additions and homes we build, I clean my rear-view mirror to look back at our work during and after completion with pride and satisfaction,” he said. Armstrong’s company has always

reflected his own “green-minded” lifestyle. Armstrong Builders, Inc. shows its dedication to clients’ needs by providing reasonable market prices and utilizing green components in its projects. “I work with the home owners to understand their needs and goals, then present them with a creative combina-

tion of their dreams [and our own],” Armstrong said. “[It’s] a combination of both our ideas.” With a dedicated staff that has been with Armstrong practically since the company’s inception, projects are developed with time-honored quality. As an advocate for community development, Armstrong doesn’t just work 24/7 on his business, but makes his mark on the community in places beyond the construction site. A lover of San Diego’s surfing scene, he helped build the Tourmaline Surfer’s Memorial and Skeeter Malcolm surf bench at Tourmaline Surf Park — a place with a view the whole community can enjoy.

Jo thinks the association is a great context for work. “This is a very supportive place to work. I feel connected to the other artists,” she said. “It’s not competitive. We all cooperate and encourage each other. It’s inspiring and comforting to think you are not alone on the sometimes difficult path of the artist. There is a lot of dedication from all concerned.” Ransome Carnes of the Clairemont Art Guild and his wife stopped by to check on the two paintings he had hanging in the back room, hoping they had sold. Carnes is a representational water color artist who has a painting of a cowboy and an outdoor porch on display. What to Do to Avoid Sibling Problems When Caring for Mom Today, due in part, to blended families, the principles of family life that you believe in may no longer be valid. But because our parents are living longer and we still want to be connected, siblings are probably the most important part of the care giving structure. In Francine Russo’s book, “They’re Your Parents, Too: How Siblings Can Survive Their Parents Aging Without Driving Each Other Crazy,” she describes the “anger/guilt gridlock” that can cause great challenges for siblings in their efforts to help Mom and Dad. Part of this stems from the assumption that the siblings don’t need to discuss what they’re going to do for their parents because they will just know. A healthy relationship with your brothers and sisters requires respect, trust, reciprocity, affection and being able to disagree without passing judgment. How can the children work together to care for their parents, even if they can’t share the same exact responsibilities? Here are some tips to consider: Talk to each other and your parents before a crisis to learn about powers of attorney, living wills and long term care insurance. Ask your parents what they want, don’t assume and get it in writing. Deal with the most immediate issues first, such as safety. Get everyone involved in the decision making process. Stay in touch and apprised of any changes through emails or telephone. Realize and accept that there will be differences of opinions. Don’t accuse, try to reach a consensus for your parent’s sake. Get help from eldercare experts The RN Geriatric Care Managers at Innovative Healthcare Consultants can help you with a thorough plan of action.
