Group seeks seal of approval for rope barrier at Children’s Pool ing its June meeting in San Diego on whether to grant the City of San Diego’s application to allow a 10-year extension of the seasonal rope barrier separating humans from pinnipeds at the pool. Shared-use at Children’s Pool has been a contentious issue for more than a decade pitting animal rights advocates against beach-access proponents. The battle between the two sides has turned ugly at times. Seal advocates once used bullhorns to warn people away from seals.

eal advocates held a press conference recently at Children’s Pool to endorse 10-year renewal of the rope barrier – and seasonal closure of the beach – at the La Lolla landmark. It was no accident the conference took place on May 15. That was the last day of the Dec. 15 to May 15 annual closure of the pool, and institution of the rope barrier, to protect harbor seals during their pupping season. The California Coastal Commission is expected to vote dur-

But such extreme conflicts have subsided in recent years. Adrian Kwiatkowski, spokesman for the Seal Conservancy, formerly La Jolla Friends of the Seals, said shared-use is working. “The pool has been closed for five months, and open the other seven, and the guideline rope has prevented conflicts between humans harassing seals, and people who are passionate about seals’ protection,” he said. “It has brought peace and calm to all involved. We don’t want to go back to what existed before.” Added Kwiatkowski: “We support the extension of the 10-year permit cycle. There’s lots of coastline for humans to have access to the ocean. This is the one spot where the seals haul out and give birth. The rope is legal. It is advisory. People don’t have to stand behind it.” “The seasonal beach closure has reduced seal harassment to zero during the pupping season while dramatically reducing police calls with no citations issued,” said Dr. Jane Reldan, president of the Seal Conservancy. The guideline rope has been successful in preventing human harassment of the harbor seal colony during the non-pupping-season months. “Without the rope, people can
get too close to the seals. These permits are an elegant compromise which balance human coastal access and animal habitat protection while maintaining this unique and special coastal resource,” Reldan said. Arguing the City refused to do an environmental impact report for their last Children’s Pool beach closure permit application, Ken Hunrichs of Friends of Children’s Pool said: “The Coastal Commission should not renew these permits without imposing strict benchmarks for actually improving sand and water quality. The City must be required to repair and open the existing beach ramp for all visitors, especially those mobility impaired using wheelchairs. Any permit extension must only be for a limited term, and with defined improvement goals for any future renewal.” Added Hunrichs: “The City’s closure plan has caused increased biological pathogen hazards from widespread animal waste on the sand, polluted water and a closed public beach. This failed five-year experiment is contradictory to the mandated uses set in law by the California State Tidelands Grant [Trust].” The crescent-shaped, manmade pool was created in the 1930s by La Jolla philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps specifically as a safe wading area for children. $38,860 seed grant has been awarded to the Environmental Center of San Diego by the California Coastal Conservancy to restore the historic Princess Street Coastal Access Trail in La Jolla. When finished, the rehabilitated Princess Trail, to be open between sunrise and sunset, will provide public access to a stretch of the shoreline now isolated by development. The planned trail will descend 50 feet from the public street at the bluff top to the beach below and State Marine Reserve and La Jolla Underwater Park. The CCC is a state agency established in 1976 to enhance coastal resources and access. The Environmental Center of San Diego is a volunteer-run non-profit preserving and protecting the natural environment through education, advocacy and action. Environmental Center of San Diego board member and project lead Pam Heatherington said conservancy grant funds will support the first phase of the Princess trailrestoration project. That is to include pre-construction assessment and preparation of the site, as well as a master plan design for the trail.

‘Once we have a design for the trail, we will start fund raising and grant writing for its completion.’ – PAM HEATHERINGTON, ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER OF SAN DIEGO “We are thrilled to have the support of the CCC,” said Heatherington. “We will work with urgency to honor the decades-long efforts of local coastal-access advocates that has yielded this important victory for the public.” Heatherington said SB&O, Inc., a San Diego multi-disciplined firm founded in 1967, which specializes in urban and land planning, civil engineering and land surveying, staked out the trail initially last October to mark the trail footprint. “The Urban Corp will go in next to brush cut to six inches, which will allow SB&O to come back in and do a topographical survey,” she said. “Rana Creek Design will then do the design once the topographical survey is completed.” The CCC grant is only for the project’s first phase. “Once we have a design for the trail, we will start fund raising and grant writing for its completion,” said Heatherington adding ECOSD will partner with the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation for preservation and oversight of the access trail.
Later phases for the trailrestoration project are to include fundraising, construction, completion, and a Native American blessing of the trail before it is opened. The Environmental Center, in partnership with the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, will maintain and monitor the trail and landscaping upon completion. The trail has been the subject of a 40-year long effort by the La Jolla community and CCC to protect and restore the trail that had been used since the early 1900’s as a path to the beach by fishermen, skin divers and surfers. “After years of effort by the La Jolla community and the California Coastal Commission, I look forward to seeing people using the trail again," said coastal-access advocate Anthony Ciani. The trail project is endorsed by numerous community organizations including the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, La Jolla Park & Beaches, WindanSea Surf Club and the San Diego Dive Club.

I
n May La Jolla Parks and Beaches, Inc. heard about a new signature fall community swim and a displaced local Native American artifact. Attorney Courtney Coyle presented to the community parks group on a Native American metate (rock mortar) that was located adjacent to the Whale View Point bluff top pathway along Coast Boulevard at the foot of Cuvier Street. It was removed because it was in the way of a sidewalk being installed, and is now being stored by the City. Noting preservation of Indian artifacts “has always been a touchstone for me,” Coyle pointed out there was no appropriate ceremony for the removal of the metate, which also bore no plaque identifying it. A member of the City’s Historical Resources Board, Coyle said the artifact “is still in storage.” She added the City subsequently sent a letter in February that “never really apologized” for the artifact’s unauthorized removal. Coyle said Native Americans feel “frustrated and unwelcome along
the coast” due to the metate’s unexpected departure. “This was their land, their place,” noted Coyle, asking, “Why can’t we bring it back to at least be near where it came from?” “I asked Courtney to come here because I was horrified by this,” said LJPB board member Melinda Merryweather. “[Native Americans] should be so gracious as to let us put it (metate) back there.” Coyle asked for a letter of support from the group to repatriate the metate to its original location, which was approved by a unanimous vote of the board. Board member Judy Halter discussed a new event to replace the former Rough Water Swim, a signature La Jolla event that was discontinued the past couple years due to Cove pollution from sea lion and bird waste. Now dubbed the La Jolla Open Water Swim and capped at 600 swimmers, Halter said, “I wanted to create an event to fund taking care of Scripps Park.” Characterizing her efforts as a “tight time horizon” and a “fastmoving train,” Halter said she’s received a lot of “civic engagement” on the project, including
help from Doug Burleigh of La Jolla Swim Club. “We want to celebrate 100 years of competitive swimming,” said Halter, conceding there have actually been only 88 swims since the event was first launched in 1916. LJPB board member Mary Ellen Morgan, who’s been among members seeking to limit use of private events in public Scripps Park noted, “Now we can say with new events coming in that they can use X percent of the park, and if it needs to grow, it can grow under a controlled basis. Let’s not let events get out of control.”
In other action • Local resident Richard Smith presented a slideshow showing coastal erosion at five different spots in La Jolla. “Erosion problems are causing immediate threats to access,” he said. • John Abbe, a Casa de Manana resident, talked about picking up trash along the Coast Walk Trail, noting he placed five-gallon buckets at park benches along the trail, which were stolen. “My long-term goal is that the City will pick up along that trail,” he said.

2018 crime statistics show increase in auto thefts, rapes; decrease in homicides BY NEAL PUTNAM | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
L
ast year, 35 homicides occurred in the City of San Diego – tying the same number of murders that took place in 2017, according to crime statistics that were recently reviewed by the City Council. Contrast that with 1991 when 167 murders were committed in San Diego, according to city records, an all-time high. Seventh District Councilmember Scott Sherman told Police Chief David Nisleit that 35 homicides were "very low" for a major city like San Diego. "Chicago could do that in a week." First District Councilmember Barbara Bry looked up Chicago's statistics during the meeting and said Chicago had accumulated 530 murders within the last year. Fifth District Councilmember Mark Kersey asked the police chief if future crime reports could include the crime rates in comparison to other large cities. Nisleit said he would do that. Council President Georgette Gomez noted the report was informational only, so no vote was taken. Nine homicides took place in 2018 in Point Loma, Old Town, and Midway District, according to the
report, which listed them from the police department's Western Division. Two murders occurred in Pacific Beach. Chris Haley, a crime analyst and the manager of information services for the police department, told the City Council that San Diego is "the safest big city in the United States." Haley said some of the crime rates easily compare to rates in the 1950s. The report states 21 of the 35 homicides involved a firearm, which is 60 percent of the total. In 2017, 13 murders involved a firearm, which is 37 percent of the 35 slayings. There were 605 rapes and sexual assaults reported in 2018, which is an 8.2 percent increase over 2017 when 559 were reported. The 605 rapes were the highest number ever reported in the city. Vehicle thefts increased in 2018 by 47 thefts citywide to total 5,182 cars that were reported stolen. The report says 653 cars were taken in La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, University City, and parts of Clairemont. There were 606 vehicles stolen in Ocean Beach, the Midway District, Point Loma, and Hillcrest, according to the report from the Western Division.
There were no statistics about bicycle thefts. Forty-one hate crimes were reported in 2018 – tying the same amount as in 2017. Twenty-two hate crimes were reported as occurring to the victim's ethnicity, with 13 happening due to perceived sexual orientation. Six were committed against someone due to their religion. Domestic violence cases dipped by 4.4 percent. Police said 6,823 cases occurred as compared with 7,139 domestic violence complaints in 2017. The report said 174 knives were used in 20.8 percent of the cases as compared with 37 firearms in 2018. The reasons homicides keep decreasing vary. Most officials like to credit passage of the three strikes law in the late 1990's in which an offender who gets a third violent felony will receive a 25 years to life sentence in prison. Advancements in medicine and increased response time to wounded victims can also account for less homicides. The lowest number of murders in San Diego since 1950 occurred in 1953 when seven people were killed, according to city records. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com
Business Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa celebrates 15th anniversary, partners with Feeding San Diego BY EMILY BLACKWOOD | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS

stancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is celebrating its 15th anniversary by bringing light to one of San Diego's most prevalent issues: food insecurity. The luxury resort recently announced that it was partnering with Feeding San Diego, a nonprofit organization that provides hunger-relief programs to 63,000 local children, families, and seniors every week. Throughout June, Estancia La Jolla will add a $1.50 donation to all lunch and dinner diner checks at the hotel's Mustang and Burros restaurant. It's a move that, according to Estancia La Jolla's marketing manager Sarah Abelsohn, both highlights the resort's milestone and brings awareness to an important cause. It is the first time Estancia La Jolla has partnered with Feeding San Diego. "It's a really great anniversary to celebrate, and it happened to fall in the month of June which is also national Hunger Awareness Month," Abelsohn said. "So we felt that since we have so many restaurants on property that it would be a great opportunity to shine a light on a community issue." In addition to the donation, Estancia La Jolla has other promo-

New La Jolla custom furniture business will create the perfect piece for your space BY EMILY BLACKWOOD | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
A custom sofa in the showroom at Sofa A La Carte. EMILY BLACKWOOD / VILLAGE NEWS
I
magine this: you’ve found a couch you love, but it’s too big for your living room, or too small for your office, or the color doesn’t quite match the palette in your den. While that might have been a deal breaker in the past, a new La Jolla business is making it easier to find the perfect couch – by creating it. Sofa A La Carte’s co-owner Arsen Kirakosyan opened up shop at 7607 Girard Ave., in 2018 after working in the custom furniture business for 45 years. “It’s a family business,” he said. “Our first store opened in San Francisco in 1999. I opened another store in San Francisco in 2000 and then another one in Las Vegas.”
Currently, the only Sofa A La Carte is in La Jolla. Kirakosyan said he chose the location because he believed it fit the tastes of the peo-
ple who call it home. “This product is the right product for this area,” he said. “The customer can pick the style, have it
made in any dimension that they wish, the number of seating cushions, pillows, everything. And we can make the sofa to those specifications.” Beyond sofas, Kirakosyan also said he does chairs, couches, sectionals, and ottomans as well as upholstery services. Typically, customers ask for pieces to fit the more unique features of their homes, like U-shaped walls and small rooms. “Possibilities are endless here,” he said. “It’s more convenient with us because the waiting time is very short. It’s only four weeks max. People like to go to showrooms, sit on a particular sofa and then buy
that sofa, but the sizes could be in the way that they don’t exactly like it, or the fabric could be the wrong texture. “Here, they can do the same thing. Sit on the style, feel it’s comfort and order it in the size and fabric that they want.” And Sofa A La Carte doesn’t charge for custom building. The price of the piece is based on the size and the fabric chosen. “We’ve had a positive reaction. People like what we do and they like the styles that we have. A lot of people like the styles from other companies but because of the waiting time they come here, and they ask us to copy those styles,” Kirakosyan said. For more information about Sofa A La Carte, visit lajollasofas.com.

2 0 1 9 La Jolla’s Top Picks of 2019 As a coastal-community that welcomes throngs of tourists throughout the year, somehow La Jolla has maintained its original charm and neighborhood sensibility instilled early on during its days as an artists’ colony. In an area that champions both “mom-and-pop” businesses, as well as national and international businesses, firms, etc., for a merchant to have the opportunity find their niche is truly remarkable. La Jollans are blessed when it comes to their ability in celebrating the arts at several world-renowned venues. Also, some of the finest dining experiences found in San Diego, and Southern California at large, are located within the confines of the bejeweled town. Seemingly a microcosm for the City of San Diego itself: historic, laid-back, dignified, forward-thinking and full of class, being “from La Jolla” (however that is distinguished) is a source of great pride to all. One thing taken very seriously in this area, however, is dining. From pristine establishments utilizing farm-to-table principles, to local landmarks that aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, the La Jolla Village News has solicited public opinion as to recognize these culinary institutions in our 2019 Reader’s Choice Awards. Peet’s Coffee When Alfred Peet opened a small coffee store in Berkeley, CA, few noticed that a revolution was brewing. But, Mr. Peet had other plans. By 1969, Peet's Coffee & Tea had become a gathering place for coffee devotees, called Peetniks, and a magnet for other artisan food crafters. The world's first "foodies" congregated in the storefronts around Peet's Coffee and the area soon had a name – The Gourmet Ghetto. LJ Country Day boys tennis: It’s Boba time BY ED PIPER | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
P
ractice is where “serious” tennis players can let their hair down a little. And informal fund-raising tournaments on campus with nonteam schoolmates may be a place where players can be even a bit more fun-loving. Having a tour guide like fouryear La Jolla Country Day tennis member Rohan Jha doesn’t hurt, either. “Dante Schrantz, a freshman, sometimes lacks focus,” Jha,
the ultimate jokester, says loudly with his teammate within earshot as the “Tanzania Tournament” rolls on. “Dante brings a joviality to the team. He makes us chase all the balls down. He plays cat-andmouse with us. He toys with us.” Besides being a valuable singles player for the Torreys. Meanwhile, junior Jake Kagnoff and JV player Eddie Palomares are powering their way to the tourney title, successfully negotiating a round-robin of four quarters made up of four teams each.

Other revenue? “You can buy a sleeve of 13 Oreos for three bucks from our undervalued candy stand that’s more for morale,” quips Jha. READ MORE ONLINE AT sdnews.com

Live Love Fashion at Westgate Hotel Fashion Files Diana Cavagnaro

izz Russell presented a fashion show at the Westgate Hotel on May 24. The theme for this spring collection was Live.Love.Fashion, which was part of the Cocktails & Couture 2019 series. The evening began with a social hour and a fun onsite swag shop with Lizz’s creations featuring her signature Rose Handbags. Frankee Traxx played tunes for the evening entertaining the crowd. The show began in the Versailles Ballroom with celebrity guest and co-host, Antoinette Love Ransom, founder of Exhibit Ambush, and Kathy David, president of IT Techpros Inc. They were high-energy personalities who kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening. I couldn’t wait to see what they would do next. Proceeds from the event go to GBS/CIDP (Guillain-Barre Syndrome/Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) Foundation International. May is GBS/CIDP awareness month. This disorder can produce paralysis of the legs, arms, breathing muscles, and face. Marilyn Tedesco, who was formerly on the board of directors and is mother of a GBS survivor, spoke to the audience and gave them all the upcoming events for GBS. The fashion show began with Russell’s new LOVE Collection, which included stunning jewelry pieces designed by Russell. VIP models were Jolisa Webb Dudley, who is the associate director of Outreach & Retention Department of Veterans Affairs, and Shari Williams who is president of Shari Williams Enterprises LLC. Models came gracefully down the runway in flowing tops. Many were wearing them off the shoulders with bell-bottom pants or skirts with slits on one side. One segment had

One of my favorite styles coming down the runway was the animal print. I especially loved the backless designs. The finale showed gorgeous eveningwear with sequins for an ooh la la night out. Russell is a survivor of GBS and spent years recuperating from her paralysis and now is a liaison leader for the San Diego Chapter. She is an inspiration for others faced with this devastating disease and tells her amazing story in her autobiography, “Smiling On The Inside.” She received the Christian Literacy Awards of Frisco, Texas as the recipient of the “Henri Award” for Outstanding Literary Work. Dogs to walk the red carpet at Paws & Pints fundraiser BY EMILY BLACKWOOD | LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS
L
a Jolla is rolling out the red carpet for its pets at the sixth-annual Paws & Pints fundraiser. Presented by the La Jolla Veterinary Hospital, the event encourages residents to celebrate their fur-babies by letting them strut their stuff down the red carpet in front of paparazzi to raise money for local charities. The FOCAS Program at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society and the FACE Foundation are the two beneficiaries for this year's event, and event founder and director Stephanie Coolidge said she would love to beat the $30,000 raised last year. "This year, La Jolla really responded on their own," she said. "They expected this event to happen. So we're calling it a La Jolla tradition now, which is really cool." Danae Davis, executive director of FACE, said that her organization uses the money raised to provide grants for pets facing economic euthanasia, a term used to describe a pet who is euthanized for an emergency, yet treatable medical condition simply because the pet parent cannot afford the cost of treatment at the time. Since the organization was founded in 2006, FACE has saved the lives of more than 2,300 pets in San Diego. One of those pets was a 7-yearold Rottweiler named Monkey. After his owner noticed he was struggling to walk, Monkey was rushed to the emergency hospital. An MRI from one of FACE's

165 partner hospitals confirmed he had intervertebral disc disease, a serious condition requiring surgical intervention from a neurologist. If he didn't have immediate treatment, he could lose his ability to walk. The only income Monkey's owner received was from disability, so she had no means to pay for his surgery. Thankfully, FACE was able to pledge money for the procedure, and Monkey has since made a full recovery. "Saving pets and helping families is our bottom line," said Davis. "We appreciate everyone who comes out to our events to support this. FACE's board of directors is committed to our mission to save lives, and underwrites nearly 100 percent of our operational costs so that funds raised year-round go straight to the animals." One hundred percent of the proceeds from Paws & Pints La Jolla goes to FACE and the FOCAS Program, Rancho Coastal Humane Society's La Jolla-based nonprofit that places animals from county shelters into foster homes. "This event is in our community, for the community, and it has evolved into something La Jolla looks forward to year after year," said Coolidge. "We have more RSVPs this year than any other year thus far.”

Living with the stress caused by today’s increasing anxiety and paranoia Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D.
S
o many of our conversations now turn to expressions of fear. We no longer feel safe in our homes, our streets, our country, our world, or our planet. We have become anxious, worried about both current and future events. Our anxiety is exacerbated by the release of fake news, which increases our paranoia because we don’t know what to believe and whom to trust. We tend to accept news as true if it conforms to our belief system and tend to reject news that runs counter to our beliefs. With the barrage of information available to us, it is important to wade through contradictory news and find some solace in sources that we trust. As we age, we experience a new kind of paranoia—when our shortterm memory fails us, we often misplace objects, and our trigger reaction is “someone took it.” We blame a maid or whoever was a likely person to have been in our homes. An example of this happened to me this morning. I’m about to go to lunch and can’t find my keys. I remember the phone ringing as I was coming in from breakfast, talking to someone, and forgetting the keys in the door. I panic, “Someone took my keys!” I call the front desk, the clinic, and finally Mike, the director of renovations, as I will need new

house and mailbox keys. I inquire how long it will take to change my lock. I am so distraught that I have a stomach ache. I am asked if I need someone to help me search my apartment. I adamantly refuse; I have a perfect memory of having left the keys hanging outside my door. Then on second thought, I take another look, shuffle some things around, and, lo and behold, under a stack of papers, I find my keys. In the meantime, Lorraine, the director of plant operations, has been looking at the hallway camera videos to see who the intruder was who came to my apartment between 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to snatch the keys from my door. Am I embarrassed, yes; guilty, yes. But mostly I am worried about shortterm memory loss, although I passed my yearly Alzheimer’s test at the ADRC (Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center), where I have been in a control group for at least a dozen years. As long as I’m admitting to one of my failings, I might as well add the others that may be familiar to my readers. I have looked for my glasses when they were on top of my head, I have left my hearing aid at home and only noticed it when I saw people’s mouths moving with nary a sound, and I have stood in the elevator wondering why it wasn’t moving having forgotten to push the button. I have misplaced my cell phone and have had to call it in order to find where it is ringing in my apartment. Now you know! This confusion is not unusual for my age group. Nor is the tendency to blame someone else for the disap-

pearance of objects. We live in an age of anxiety: anxiety about theft in our own homes—although there is excellent security where I live and all employees are vetted—fear of falling, fear in walking in our city after reading about muggings in our neighborhoods, and fear of natural disasters as we read about the impending, apparently overdue earthquakes or fires and tsunamis worldwide. As we age, we feel more vulnerable; we are not as steady on our feet, not as fast if we need to run somewhere to safety. And so our fears are exacerbated. The more we feel vulnerable, the more anxious we become, the more anxious, the more stressed, the more stressed, the more forgetful, the more forgetful, the more vulnerable, and so the cycle repeats itself. What to do? According to the Harvard Men’s Health Watch (Nov. 16, 2018) there can be several triggers to forgetfulness to consider: too little sleep (we still need six to eight hours), possible side effects of medications, an underactive thyroid (both of these last two can be easily checked), and depression. Memory can be improved by regular exercise and by challenging your brain by trying something new. Going to a computer class, even brushing your teeth with a nondominant hand, anything that gets you out of your comfort zone will enhance your brain function. one are the days of hoping your kids don’t lose their ride tickets for the San Diego County Fair. This year, the fair is going ticket-less. Even with new rides, like the open-air suspended passenger vehicle “The Endeavour,” the most exciting addition to this year’s fair might be its new FunPass. Rather than purchase tickets at a booth, fairgoers can simply download an app with preloaded ride and game tickets and scan it to use them. The app can then be reloaded with more tickets, eliminating the pesky need to go back and forth from the ticket booth. “All these years up until now we've had actual tickets,” said Annie Pierce, spokesperson for the fair. “Now we have an app.

Tickets on the app can be used anytime during the fair. If you want to skip the lines, the fair is also introducing a new FastPass. For $20, the FastPass will get you into an exclusive lane, which only a limited amount of passes will be issued for per day. Even with this leap into modern times, the San Diego County Fair still remains a timeless tradition – as hinted in this year’s theme “Oz-some.” “We loved the ‘Wizard of Oz’ because it’s all about discovery,” Pierce said.
