‘Our Town’s’ Grover’s Corner a portrait of University City SANDY LIPPE You are probably familiar with the Thornton Wilder play, “Our Town,” set in the mythical town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire from 1901 to 1913. The play was produced at The Old Globe Theatre in 1975 with Craig Noel, the founding director of The Globe, playing the role of stage manager. University City is a lot like Grover’s Corners, a compact community of regular folks making a living and a life, revering the town children, recording ordinary events and even listening for the train whistle as the train hurries through Rose Canyon on the way to important places like downtown San Diego or Los Angeles. In “Our Town,” the locals can set their watch to the train heading to Albany, New York. In U.C., the locals can do the same. Churches, synagogues and schools dot the main street of University City and the four corners of gas stations at Genesee Avenue and Governor Drive are community identification marks. The library is on our main street, east of the four corners, as is our town’s gathering place to the west, Standley Park. Kids ride their bikes to and from school, as well as to Standley Park. “I can’t do anything bad there,” a youngster once confessed, “because somebody else’s mom might see me and tell my mother.” It’s true. Just as in Grover’s Corners, everybody seems to know everybody else. The library bike rack and parking lot are full most days. The Postal Annex in the Marketplace is west of Governor and Genesee. Jane Reilly keeps tab of how everyone is doing and always lends a sympathetic ear to her customer friends. She gives continuity to the community. Her customers are her friends, just as in “Our Town,” where Mr. Morgan, who owns the drug-

store, or Doc Gibbs, who checks on friends in Grover’s Corners. The post office also has longtime employees: Beth, Kathy and Susan. They don’t just sell stamps; they hand out concerns and compliments. Beth’s son is serving his country overseas in the Middle East, and Beth knows about our sons, daughters and grandkids. Kathy has been a generous volunteer for U.C. Celebration over the years on July 4. Living in the community, she’s one of us. Susan is interested in the families who stop by her counter. Times were changing for Grover’s Corners when automobiles were introduced. Change was in the air. “And now they are bringing in these auto-mo-biles; the best thing to do is just stay home. Why, I can remember the time when a dog could lie down all day in the middle of Main Street and nothing would come to disturb him,” Mr. Morgan says. Today’s technology is yesterday’s first automobiles in our University City-set drama. Change is in the air in our town. Will our little post office close because email is riding a wave of success, supplanting the letters and bills we paid to mail at the post office? Will we lose the human touch provided by our friends who are clerks? Will our passion for the technology world wipe out the people-topeople experience and isolate us even more? Standley Park’s lovely, capable director, Sarah Anderson-Erazo, has served the community well for years. With the budget gap, Standley Park may lose her talent and genuine care for our “Grover’s Corners.” We celebrated Sarah’s rites of passage: going to college, getting married and now soon becoming a mom. We want to keep her around and we wonder if the city fathers and mothers understand the close relationship we have with folks like Sarah who come into our communities and hearts. Moon snail 'unphased' by own fancy footwork BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD | VILLAGE NEWS Did someone dump a boatload of broken gaskets off La Jolla Shores? The rubbery-looking things do resemble refuse from human activity, but actually they are the result of many moon snails' (Euspira lewisii) reproductive efforts. A common resident of the local sand community off La Jolla Shores, the moon snail is the largest of its species, reaching about 6 inches long in these parts. The snail's thick, globular, shell (to about 2 inches across) varies in color from cream, to tan, to yellowish, to orange-yellow. Thin brownish striations overlap the base color. Other pastel hues often sneak into the inner spiral regions. I usually see the snail plowing half-buried through the sand using its impressively large pale-pink foot, a blob of soft tissue about four times the volume of its shell. Because of this

UCSD Foundation trustee and former UC regent dies at 76 John Davies, an attorney, civic leader, former University of California regent of 12 years and UCSD Foundation trustee, died at 76 on May 20, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The prominent attorney and businessman helped ensure educational excellence in California, enhance San Diego and support the state judicial system as an advisor to two California governors on judicial appointments. Davies and his wife, Ann, were recently awarded with the UC San Diego Chancellor’s Medal, one of the highest honors given for exceptional service in support of the university’s mission. Davies served as a trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation for a span of nearly two decades. “John Davies was a trusted advisor whose insight and support proved invaluable for the campus and UC system as whole,” said UC San Diego

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. “His impact on California’s educational system is immeasurable.” Davies served as judicial appointments secretary to Gov. Pete Wilson from 1995 to 1999; before that as chairman of the California Judicial Qualification Committee for two senators. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him judicial advisor, a position he served through 2007. In total,

Davies influenced the appointment of more than 600 state judges and 35 federal appointees. Davies was born and raised in Chula Vista. He attended the University of Southern California. Davies entered the U.S. Navy for three years before earning his law degree at UC Berkeley. Over the years, Davies honed his expertise at various law firms. Davies served as chairman of the city Planning Commission and director and as president of the Centre City Development Corporation for many years. In addition to the UCSD Foundation board, Davies served on the boards of Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego and H.G. Fenton Company until his death. A celebration of life will be held June 3 at 4 p.m. at the Town and Country Resort Hotel in Mission Valley, located at 500 Hotel Circle North.

Scripps breaks ground on Music programs get big checks $43.9 million cancer center BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS

Scripps Health broke ground May 24 on a 41,000-square-foot radiation therapy center featuring one of the most advanced technologies of its kind in the world for treating cancer. The $43.9 million facility, located on an 8-acre parcel at 10670 John Jay Hopkins Drive, is expected to be open for patient care by the third quarter of 2012. Construction is expected to start by June. "The Scripps Radiation Therapy Center will help improve the quality of patient care by providing the very latest technology and a full offering of treatment options," said Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of Scripps Health, in a statement. "Our technology will help provide greater patient comfort by significantly shortening treatment times, and will improve precision by leaving less time for tumor and patient movement during treatment. This will be the premier radiation therapy center in the region." According to the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology (ASTRO), nearly two-thirds of all cancer patients will undergo radiation therapy, and the new Scripps center will specialize in radia-

a price tag you can put on that relationship when you make budget decisions? Is it all about the bottom line? University City loves its children and sports. Little League dads are seen in the early morning light preparing the fields, coaching the kids and keeping tradition alive. Just a few weeks ago, a poster child for Little League volunteering, Larry Yandel, was laid to rest after a bout with melanoma. His life was cut short at age 46. Yandel, known to his family and friends as a fun-loving, wild guy who loved his wife, Dawn, and three children, passed away after a fierce battle with cancer. He loved baseball and kids he coached so well for years and years. In “Our Town,” Emily died during childbirth and her life was celebrated in the First Congregational Church. In the University City drama, Larry’s life was celebrated at OMC, Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church, where the large church saw locals and family from Chicago recreating the “Our Town” scene. eulogies. Larry taught his two brothers to sled off the top of their Chicago house in the winter when the parents weren’t home. For a moment, laughter came to the grieving congregation. The appreciation of University City as extended family was most noted by Larry’s family from Chicago. OMC’s pastor, who is soon to retire and move out of University City, spoke of Larry’s goodness and belief in God. The train whistle is comforting as the train heads north through Rose Canyon. Lights are going on in people’s homes in University City as they wind down another day. The poignant words of Emily echo across the century: “Goodbye, goodbye, world. Goodbye, Grover’s Corners, Mama and Papa. Goodbye to clocks ticking, and Mama’s sunflowers. And food and coffee. And newironed dresses and hot baths … and sleeping and waking up. Oh, Earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Last year, Jamie Ogle, the owner of Lloyd Pest Control, came up with the idea of using the company’s 60-second radio commercial space on KPRI to feature local artists, and the “Local Music Buzz” spots were a success, with thousands listening and downloading the featured music via the company’s web link. This year, to expand efforts to support the next generation of artists, Ogle came up with an idea that will greatly benefit La Jolla High and a few other local schools. Tomorrow, June 3, Lloyd Pest Control, along with KPRI and two local bands will put on an assembly at La Jolla High School to present a $2,500 check to the school to kick off their "Find Your Voice" initiative. The donation will help music departments provide necessary items to continue offering arts at La Jolla High. To offset the increasing budget cuts that have hurt elective education programs like music, art and drama

classes, Lloyd Pest Control is also giving $2,500 checks to Farb Middle School, University City High School and Clairemont High School. The assembly at LJHS will kick off the entire initiative, with a lunchtime concert by Cindy Santini and Filthy Violets and an inspirational message given by the assembly’s emcee, Cathryn Beeks of KPRI’s “Homegrown Hour.” The lunch-time concerts support the individual schools’ music departments, and CD sales go to the San Diego Unified School District Visual & Performing Arts Department for distribution to all of their programs. Michael Fiedler, director of instrumental music at La Jolla High, said with resources for music education being as scarce as they are, any donation helps. “But $2,500 is tremendous,” he said. “With this contribution we can finally afford to replace a few old instruments that are beyond repair. I am incredibly grateful for the generosity that Lloyd Pest Control has shown to us.”

Who you choose as your hearing provider is an important decision. It’s important to choose an Audiologist; someone that is educated in hearing loss and hearing aid technology. Also, you want to choose someone that you trust because you will be spending many years with that person. Your Audiologist is responsible for helping you understand your hearing loss and what can be done to help improve your quality of life. You ultimately hear with your brain and your brain acts like a muscle. It’s time to exercise that muscle! Dr. Dena Riso is the proud owner of Peninsula Hearing Center in Point Loma and Boulevard Hearing in La Jolla. Through testing and counseling, she works with her patients to help them develop a successful and healthy hearing plan to improve their quality of life. She is happy to talk to you or a loved one about any issues you are having with your hearing or hearing aids.

Eight Southern California coffee roasters and 16 Southern California baristas will participate in a brewing challenge tomorrow, June 3, at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, and Chuck Patton, owner and principle roaster of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, will be representing La Jolla in the challenge. The event will start at 5 p.m. at 5627 La Jolla Blvd. Patton describes his relationship with coffee beans as passionate, nurturing and obsessive. At the roasting challenge, each roaster will contribute one coffee, and baristas will be randomly paired to collaborate and find the best of three extractions and brew methods for their particular coffee. Judges include Mike Perry, named

“Roaster of the Year” in 2009 by Roast Magazine, and Sally Rivera from Café Imports, a leading importer for premium, fairtrade coffee. Patton’s roasting career started in 2001 with a home coffee roaster given to him by his wife. He then moved on to a onepound capacity roaster and a farmers market stand, home deliveries and a small kiosk in back of an Albertson’s in Pacific Beach. He now roasts beans onsite at his Bird Rock coffee shop. Patton is a former community college English teacher and a slide guitar player. In his spare time, you can find him drinking good beer and perfecting the art of pork-smoking. He lives in La Jolla

La Jolla Pop Warner kicks off football and cheer season BY KAI OLIVER-KURTIN | VILLAGE NEWS Nothing says back-to-school time quite like football and cheerleading, especially for the often under-stimulated youth on summer break. La Jolla Pop Warner Football & Cheer Association is holding registration for youth ages 5-15 for its 2011 season now through July, with practice beginning Aug. 1 for the Torreys. “Children enrolled in youth sports have a great ability to play at the high school level later on,” said Scott Rosecrans, league president. “Many wait to play football until high school when other players may be so far ahead of them and already know the details of the game — not to mention there are often large weight discrepancies between high school players.” Joining the league is a time commitment of about 80 hours of practice, one scrimmage, nine games, and more if the team advances into the playoffs. But schoolwork is the

first priority for these s t u d e n t - at h l e t e s , Rosecrans said. The league offers supervised study hall before each practice. The league holds fundraisers throughout the season to help cover operational costs, equipment, uniforms, game officials, insurance, concesTwo Torreys defenders sions and security, team up to tackle a Valencia and it is accommoPark Hornet. Summer is here and we are turning up the Heat at the Chamber. Our beautiful new website www.LJGTCC.com is up and running. It includes a new hotel and restaurant guide as well as a community directory. Check it out! We also have great mixers scheduled at Finch’s Wine bar and Bistro, Roy’s and Appllonia. Our mixers are always scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month. (see details below) Vigilucci’s Restaurant on Prospect Street in downtown La Jolla provided us their stunning balcony for our May mixer. Over fifty networkers enjoyed a sampling of Vigilucci’s delicious pasta dishes and scrumptious appetizers. The atmosphere was further enhanced by the pleasing guitar of Ken Bourmont. Our special thanks to owner Roby Vigilucci, general manager Maurizio Cabone, and event coordinator Tara Davis. Earlier in May we enjoyed on Open House and Ribbon Cutting at the beautiful new location of Northwest Mutual Life located at 4225 Executive Drive Ste 1250 La Jolla, CA 92037. I hope to see everyone next week at Finch’s.

LIVING

The beat of a new ‘drum’ BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE VILLAGE NEWS

In residency at La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Asian American Repertory Theatre (SDAART, www.asianamerican-rep.org) proves itself worthy of selection for the Playhouse’s 2010-11 Resident Theater Program. Through June 12, SDAART presents a praiseworthy production of “Flower Drum Song, A Musical Revival in Concert.” This is the 2002 Broadway version of the 1958 Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II musical. Playwright David Henry Hwang (“M. Butterfly,” “Yellow Face”) wrote a new book based on the original by Hammerstein and Joseph Fields. The “in concert” part of the work’s title is rather misleading. This is a fully-staged production in the Playhouse’s Shank Theatre, replete with costumes, scenic design, dance and music by director/keyboard player Thomas Hodges and a drummer. Hodges is excellent, accompanying the entire musical without a page-turner. The missing drum matters little when listeners encounter the marvelous performance of San Diego State University student Mindy Ella Chu, who portrays Mei Lei, a young Chinese woman who flees Chairman Mao’s China when her father is killed while resisting Mao’s henchmen. All her father gave to Mei Lei was an ancestral drum and the address of his best friend, widower Wang Chi Yang (Albert Park), who produces Chinese Opera in his theater in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Mei Lei falls in love with Yang’s son, Ta (David Armstrong). Caught between the old and new cultures, Ta prefers the Americanized Linda Low (Tiffany Loui), who strips in a once-a-week nightclub show. Linda prefers white men, so she asks Mei Lei to take Ta off her hands, even fixing her up with an American gown to seal the deal. Others in the large company are

Patrick Mayuyu as Yang’s helper and entertainer, Chin, and Dante Macatantan as Chao, an admirer of Mei Lei. Madame Liang (Elise Kim Prosser), a show biz agent, hopes to promote Linda. Madame convinces Wang Chi, who is putty in her hands, to turn the opera house into a nightclub, Club Chop Suey, and to assume the name Sammy Fong. Romance comes to all except poor Chao, who returns to China. Choreographed by Gina Ma is “Fan Tan Fannie,” in which the dancers snap open huge lavender fans in time to the music. Loui is a better dancer than she is a singer, pulls off “I Enjoy Being a Girl” reasonably well nonetheless. And the exceptionally handsome Armstrong, a better actor than a singer, somehow navigates Ta’s high tessitura (“You Are Beautiful”) without crashing. But it is Chu who entrances with shy but generous acting, her gorgeous, evenly produced mezzo-soprano voice, singing the fine songs “Love, Look Away” and the infectious “A Hundred Million Miracles.” Peter James Cirino directs. Scenic designer Dominic Abbenante works wonders with David Armstrong as Ta and Tiffany two screens, chairs, tables and digital proLoui as Linda Low perform in “Flowjections. Costumes by Caroline Rousseter Drum Song: A Musical Revival in Johnson, her UCSD MFA thesis project, are Concert,” produced by Asian Amerfetching. The production uses no microican Repertory Theatre at La Jolla Playhouse. Courtesy photo phones and diction is clear. “Flower Drum Song” continues at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays through June 12 at the Theodore and Adele Shank Theatre, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive. size discrepancy, the shell is barely discernible when the foot is fully extended. Unexpectedly then, if danger is afoot, the snail can fully retreat into its shell. I kid you not. Cinderella's stepsisters would envy the moon snail's successful fit into its petite slipper. The feat of the foot is due to the snail's ingenious internal sprinkler system. When the snail contracts, water is squeezed out pores located on the foot that open to the outside. The only flaw in this arrangement is the limited time a snail can be confined because the tight quarters don’t include breathing room. The foot is also responsible for propelling the animal forward over shifting and ripply sand bottom, a task made possible by tiny hairs (cilia) covering the bottom of the foot. As the cilia beat forward to backward, the animal forages ahead at about the same rate sand particles are swept back over the foot. Muscular waves, contracting muscles on the sides of the foot to push the animal forward, are another form of snail transport. A snail may use the former, latter, or both tactics simultaneously but whatever moves it, mucus glands (also covering the foot's underside) are there to pave the way. Secreting mucus eases a snail's trail so the mollusk glides along with minimum effort over what would

otherwise be bumpy, scratchy sand grains. When prey is nigh, a moon snail's versatile foot transforms into a grasping appendage. Clamping over the victim's shell (adult moon snails have a special fondness for clams), a moon snail suffocates its prey, after which it drills a hole through the shell using a specialized accessory organ. An enzyme released to soften the prey’s shell aids the process. With all this demolition underway, it’s only a matter of time (hours to a few days) before the moon snail gets to the goodies. Telltale evidence of a moon snail meal is an empty shell punctured by a countersunk hole with clean, beveled edges. Now is the season for moon snail reproduction, so they and their collars are plentiful. Beach walkers are likely to come upon a collar due to the recent uptick in surf and surge. While sand collars look architecturally exotic, they are fundamentally as sophisticated as an egg sandwich, though not the kind assembled at your local deli. This recipe calls for thousands of microscopic-sized eggs pressed into a single layer between two layers of sand grains and cemented together with mucus. Hold the tomato and mayo. Now about the reason for the collar's “broken” appearance. The sand-mucusegg concoction is extruded as a wide strip that follows the circular perimeter of the snail's body. Because the excreted mucus hardens quickly, the end product — the

collar — holds its curl. In other words, a sand collar is never a closed circle and so is not broken. Externally, the collar looks inert while the inside environment is a hotbed of activity because moon snails don't leave the collar immediately after they hatch. They spend a few weeks swimming between the sand grain layers and continuing to develop. Once the collar disintegrates, tiny moon snails with transparent shells emerge. Survivors A sand collar egg seek out green algae to setsandwich never forms tle where they graze on a complete circle. ©2011 Judith Lea Garfield diatoms coating the algal surface. Later on, they eat the algae itself. When moon snails reach the half-year mark, they shift from being vegetarians to carnivores, taking up sand travel to satisfy a newly developing yen for clams. — Judith Lea Garfield, biologist and underwater photographer, has authored two natural history books about the underwater park off La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores. SOCIETY

Fusion, and ‘Bruce Juice’ Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas eople familiar with the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park know that its name is a fusion of two Japanese words (“min” and “gei”). Together, they mean “art of all peo-

P

ple,” and that, in essence, is what the museum exhibits for its visitors to enjoy. On May 20, the museum hosted Mingei Fusion, its third annual international celebration for the senses. The event, which had a cocktail party atmosphere, brought together a wide range of delights. Besides the varied and intriguing exhibitions of folk art, craft and design that are always on display at the Mingei, guests enjoyed such diverse entertainment as Indian and Samoan dance troupes, Japanese drummers, a blues/soul band, a Ghanaian ensemble and European folk musicians. Performers wore colorful, authentic costumes and some guests took

advantage of the opportunity to have intricate henna designs skillfully applied to their hands, arms or faces. (Unlike the tattoos they so much resemble, they disappear after several days, leaving no regrets.) More than 250 guests attended the lively event, enjoying taste treats from around the world including unusual creations from Abyssinia, Kenya, Italy, Japan and Russia. Libations included specialty wines, craft beers and saké. Specialty desserts and handmade chocolates were irresistible. Those preferring a supper club ambiance dined in the Fusion Lounge, with reserved seating and special catering. A new feature this year was an “after-party” in the Fusion Club (the Warren Theatre Gallery) from 9 to 11 p.m., with a DJ, Latin dance lessons, a video installation, Vietnamese food and more of those social sparklers. Guests from the main party attended, as did many others who bought special reduced-price tickets for just this part of the event.

By now, everyone’s read Charlene Baldridge’s review of the La Jolla Playhouse’s newest production, “A Dram of Drummhicit” (Village News, May 26, page 11), so the word’s already widespread that this play is not only hilarious, but one of the funniest of the Playhouse’s productions in recent memory. But the May 22 opening night theatergoers didn’t know that yet, when many of them gathered in LJP’s Play Development Center for a reception before the play’s world premiere performance. Sure, it was billed as a “supernatural comedy,” but there would be secrets, and “bog bodies,” so how funny could this be, really…? The playwright was there, though nobody seemed to have the courage to ask him any probing questions about what would soon transpire on the stage. But nothing kept the party guests from enjoying a fine buffet of tasty treats, tray-passed hors d’oeuvres and a full bar that also offered “Bruce Juice,” a specialty drink made with Springbank (10-year-old Scotch), fresh vanilla bean, fresh blackberries, agave, simple syrup, cream and a splash of soda. Most deduced that the name had to do with some character from the story, but the finer details of its origins weren’t realized until the performance was well under way. Shortly before curtain time, Managing Director Michael Rosenberg (always an entertaining speaker) welcomed everyone and announced that LJP has ended each of the last five years “in the black” (and he wasn’t referring to the stage lighting). In this business, and in these times, such financial success is very good news. Mike Eagle, attending his first opening night as board chair, announced that this was the first play of the new season. Artistic Director Christopher Ashley revealed that six of the actors were second-year MFA students in UCSD’s acting program, and brought playwright Arthur Kopit over to tell how some of the play’s mysterious details came about, but it all still seemed pretty foggy. But not to worry. The play, while laced with complexities, was clear and easy to follow. Despite being a world premiere, the actors seemed comfortable with their roles, as if they’d been performing this show for months. The

dialog was spicy (wouldn’t get a “G” rating), and the dialect seemed authentic but easily understandable. The “adult situations” and brief nudity served to heighten the play’s realism and entertainment value. The one glitch — a torn curtain or screen — was handled so quickly, safely and professionally that it was almost unnoticeable. Sets and lighting were stunning, laughter was prevalent

throughout the performance, and the audience was clearly impressed. Conversations at the lavish postperformance dessert reception and cast party confirmed that virtually everybody loved the play. For a firstever performance, it seemed quite polished — but, of course, it will continue to be improved through the duration of the run, which ends June 12. Don’t miss it!

Common Care Giving Misconceptions Caring for a parent or spouse is an emotional subject which is likely the reason so many myths surround it. This article is designed to dispel some of these myths. It’s a must-read for anyone currently involved in care giving including those who are considering hiring or perhaps even becoming a caregiver. Adult Children No Longer Provide Care for Aging Parents at Home While stories of adult children abandoning their aging parents make for interesting reading, this is just not true. What is true is that families live further apart from one another than ever before and that situation sometimes presents caregiving challenges. Advances in communication make it easy for adult children and aging parents to stay in regular contact. Many children also care for their parents but the stress may be great. Most People Have a Plan in Place Before the Need Arises Not true. If you don’t yet have a caregiving plan, you’re definitely not alone. Most adult children do not tackle this issue until they are forced, meaning it doesn’t usually happen until a parent becomes ill, starts showing signs of the onset of agerelated conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, or until one aging parent dies and the other has trouble resuming life after the death of their spouse. Caregiver Resources are Insufficient This is not true. Caregiver resources are fragmented and sometimes difficult to comprehend or access. But they’re out there. New legislation regarding caregiving and care receiving is constantly being introduced an approved.
