Athenaeum celebrates 20 years of the Main Gallery BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Born in Bremen, Germany, a city in the northwestern part of the country that was founded circa 900 A.D., La Jolla Athenaeum director Erika Torri knows a thing or two about appreciating history. The nonprofit membership library that houses books, art, music and related items — the youngest of only 16 such establishments remaining nationwide — has been around since 1899. On June 25 it will launch its first-ever Secret Sale event and a special commemorative display to celebrate

20 years filled with 234 exhibitions. “The Athenaeum is the oldest cultural institution in town,” Torri said. “All of us are working to keep this history alive.” Torri has served as the Athenaeum’s director since 1989 and has overseen special exhibitions since she helped expand the building in July of 1990 to create the Main Gallery — which she considers one of her greatest accomplishments. “The expansions have been very rewarding,” Torri said, adding that another was completed in 2007. “Also, we’ve become a sort of cultural hub and I am very proud of

the atmosphere we have here.” The Athenaeum, whose name is derived from the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena, offers a host of events and activities, from exhibitions and receptions to concerts, lectures, discussions and art classes. Torri attends nearly every event to personally greet artists and guests. “We have something going on almost every night,” Torri said. “There are different audiences for each event, so there is something for everyone.” SEE ATHENAEUM, Page 5

Vibrant arts festival returns this weekend BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS A diverse array of nearly 190 local and international artists will convene for the 24th annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts on June 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University of California, San Diego East Campus located at Genesee Avenue and Regents Road. The Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation produces the event each year to raise funds for San Diegans with disabilities and injured veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. To date, more than $1.7 million has been raised to benefit more than 35,000 adults and children through various programs. This year, street artist Melanie Stimmell Van Latum will transform asphalt into vibrant, intricate artistry using chalk as her medium, along with several contributing artists in a recurring exhibition known as “Calle Color.” This year’s theme is “Illusionary Art” and is expected to inspire anamorphic and 3-D images. Van Latum is the sole female winner of the title of “Maestra Madonnara,” or master street painter, and has contributed to chalk art festivals since 1998, attracting clients from around the world. Trace Palmer will display hand-blown glass jewelry and scenic painter David Skinner will return after two “best in show” awards at previous La Jolla Festival of the Arts. Rocket engineer Bret Webster will share his unique vantage through photography, and Margaret Willmoth Jensen will exhibit her one-of-a-kind contemporary glass wall art. Other artists will show their talents through woodworking, sculpture, painting, drawing and mixed-media creations. Entertainment will include live performances by Rockola, the Mar Dels and other local bands, plus special performances by United States Navy Southwest Brass Band and the United States Navy Destroyers. Warwick’s has corralled several authors and celebrity chefs to host book signings and demonstrations — including the Marine SEE ARTS, Page 5

Artist James Beard designed bicycle racks in the shape of COURTESY PHOTO ocean waves.

Artist encourages more cycling with bike racks BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS

Nearly 190 artists will showcase their works as the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation presents the 24th annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts on June 26 and 27 at the University of California, San Diego DON BALCH | Village News East Campus located at Genesee Avenue and Regents Road.

If James Beard has his way, local residents will soon utilize transportation more on two wheels rather than four. Beard is an artist and instructor at La Jolla Yoga Center. After hearing requests for bicycle racks at the yoga center, Beard, who also has experience in construction and electrical contracting, was inspired to create metal racks shaped and painted like ocean waves that he hopes will highlight local culture and encourage a more bikefriendly La Jolla. Each three-foot-wide, 14-inch-tall rack can hold three bicycles and would cost from $300 to $500 or perhaps more depending on the type of metal and finishing methods employed, Beard said. Stainless or galvanized steel, plus a powder-coated finish, would incur additional costs. To create each rack, Beard shapes cold metal using a template he fashioned into a series of bends and curves. “There is some uniformity, but I’m an artist, not a mass manufacturer,” Beard said. “No two racks will be exactly alike. Each one will be unique, just like a real wave.” A frequent swimmer and body surfer at Boomer Beach and Windansea, as well as a La Jolla Elementary School alumnus, Beard said he wants to be part of the La Jolla’s “green revolution.” “This project will encourage people to ride their bikes, it will alleviate traffic and parking, it’s better for the environment, and it will help people get more exercise,” Beard said. “I don’t see how it could go wrong.” Specific locations where Beard would like to see his SEE RACK, Page 5

Street re-striping set for July 7 and 8 District 1 Councilwoman Sherri Lightner’s office announced that the sewer and water repairs on Village streets are scheduled to conclude at the end of June, with the final step of restriping the streets to occur Wednesday, July 7 and Thursday, July 8 from 5 a.m. to noon each day. The contractor is finishing asphalt patches and will apply a slurry seal — a thin asphalt overlay — from June 28 to July 1. The re-striping cannot be applied until at least a week after the slurry seal is completed, Lightner’s office explained in an e-mail, and officials wanted to avoid the project during the July 4 holiday weekend.

Demonstration planned against offshore drilling With global thoughts on the recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, local residents are being asked to join hands on the beach Saturday as a statement against offshore drilling. The demonstration, dubbed Hands Across the Sand, will be held at La Jolla Shores on June 26. The event comes less than two months after the BP oil-rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that has resulted in one of the largest oil spills in history. In addition to holding hands, event participants will draw physical and metaphorical lines in the sand as an anti-drilling demonstration. The La Jolla Shores demonstration will be held near the lifeguard station at 11:30 a.m. On Saturday, people in 46 states and 16 countries will participate in the now-global event. NEWS ATHENAEUM CONTINUED FROM Page 1

A popular series has been the Athenaeum’s 30 annual free mini concerts. Another series will feature four piano performances by Gustavo Romero to commemorate composer Frederic Chopin each Sunday in July. One of Torri’s primary responsibilities involves selecting future exhibitions, with the help of a committee of leaders within the local art community. She also manages the Athenaeum’s 14 staff members and oversees six independent consultants as well as budget and finances. “I feel very strongly that we should be supporting our local artists because they don’t have a lot of venues of this sort,” Torri said. The committee meets regularly to discuss potential artists who might contribute future exhibitions. Once they make a decision, they approach the artist and usually give him or her a year or year and a half to assemble the contents of the display, Torri said. “We don’t necessarily curate, which means we do not dictate what the artist has to show,” Torri said. “But their work usually pertains to our mission; that is, books and music, and quite often they become influenced by the Athenaeum itself and their work changes because of it. We don’t have a ‘white box’ sort of space like many galleries. The Athenaeum has its own personality.” Artist Genie Shenk created a series of 365 small plates in 2009, called “Dreams and Other Lost Languages,” inscribed

Secret Sale and Special Exhibition Professional artists who have been featured at the Athenaeum commissioned 8by-10-inch works of art to be sold anonymously for $200 each. The identities of the artists will be revealed after all pieces have been purchased at the sale, which begins tomorrow, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. A special display, “It All Adds Up: Celebrating Twenty Years of Exhibitions,” will run from June 26 to July 31 and will feature invitations, artists’ portraits, exhibition photos, reviews, internal staff notes and previously unrevealed materials from an insider’s perspective. with sayings and varied color schemes which, when assembled, created a book representing the past year. “She measured the plates exactly so that they could fit perfectly in between the windows and the other features of the Athenaeum,” Torri said. “It meandered all throughout the gallery, and it was really created specifically for that space.” Another artist, Jay Johnson, filled a large wooden crate with objects from his studio and both recent and dated artwork in a late 2008 installation called “Smoking Room.” “He then created slits in the side of the crate so the only way to see the exhibit was by peering through the cracks,” Torri said. “It was very inspirational.” One recent exhibition in March 2010, which Torri called “phenomenal,” came from David Adey and was called “John Henry.” The installment included a freefloating Roman arch made of books. “It was such an engineering feat,” Torri said. “There wasn’t anything supporting it at all.” What distinguishes the Athenaeum from mainstream libraries, Torri said, is a tighter-knit, more personal experience. “We’re like the green grocers of the

past,” Torri said. “We have 2,200 members and we try to know each one of them.” Torri, who lived in Germany and Boston before moving to La Jolla, said she has always been involved with libraries and the arts, running galleries and co-ops and working at museums. When her two daughters were younger, Torri spent much of her time creating miniature weavings. She became involved with the Athenaeum once her children grew up. “Once I took on this job and I realized what an important institution it was, I sort of threw all my passion into it,” she said. “It becomes your whole life. If it’s not your life and it’s not your passion, then you probably can’t do all the things that are required.” Torri’s husband, Fred, is a nuclear engineer who shares his wife’s appreciation for the arts. The couple has amassed a personal collection of works from mostly contemporary artists from San Diego and Europe that include John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Kim MacConnel and Jean Lowe. Torri invites the public to explore the Athenaeum’s collection and consider becoming members.

Town Council Streetscape Committee and Promote La Jolla, said that both groups approved motions to endorse the installment of Beard’s bicycle racks in accordance with city regulations. “We certainly can use more safelyplaced bike racks, instead of having the increasing number of bicyclists chaining their rigs to street signs and trees,” Rasmussen said. Joe LaCava, vice president of the Bird Rock Community Council, said that the group was interested in implementing the racks in that area as well. “I love the idea that a needed resource such as bike racks can evolve out of the talented folks that make up

La Jolla,” LaCava said. “Rather than settle for the generic bike racks the city may provide for free, the creative design with its ocean theme can further unify the streetscape of the Village and Bird Rock.” LaCava said he has urged Beard to continue to work with Promote La Jolla, which he said can administer private improvements in the public right of way, and to engage the community in a discussion about where to locate the racks so that they are “in harmony” with the surroundings. He also said he is working with Beard to navigate city and other regulations to help propel the project forward.

“I’m always surprised, since we’ve been here for 111 years, how few people — even native La Jollans — really know about us,” she said. “I think they would realize we’ve become a very culturally rich community center.” The Athenaeum is funded exclusively by memberships and private donations, Torri said, with the exception of special grants from the city and county for events.

The tournament is free to spectators and a great event for families to attend while young enthusiasts can

31ST ANNUAL OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR & CHILI COOK-OFF FESTIVAL SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 2010 # 10AM - 8PM # OBSTREETFAIR.COM # OCEANBEACHSANDIEGO.COM

OB Street Fair to lure 70,000 to Newport Avenue Chili cook-off, music power annual event BY ANTHONY GENTILE | THE BEACON Even with summer heat on the horizon, the forecast next weekend in Ocean Beach calls for chili weather. The 31st annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival — predicted to draw as many as 70,000 funseekers throughout the day — takes wing Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. primarily along the 4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue, the OB Pier and Abbott Street. “Our fair is free and parking is free and the shuttles are free,” said Ocean Beach MainStreet Association Executive Director Denny Knox. “You can bring the whole family, and you only spend what you are going to spend on vendor booths and in local stores.” Things get started with the event’s tastiest tradition — the chili cook-off. Three teams have been added to the competition for a total of 28, and all competing recipes can be tasted with $10 tickets that go on sale at 10 a.m. Individual tasting tickets will also be available for $1. “That has always been a big concern — people racing here to get the chili,” Knox said. should have their pick. New food items include shrimp Creole, red beans and rice, pork tacos, ribs and healthy and vegan options. Also new this year is a relaxation area in the parking lot behind Winston’s Beach Club, taking the place of last year’s teenage fun area. Knox said this area will give people a chance to take a minute away from the bustle of Newport Avenue. “We’re going to have a climbing wall, tables and chairs for people to sit at,” Knox said. “If you want to take a load off, that’s the place to go.” In a move that will please the art lovers out there, the street fair’s Artists’ Alley has expanded. Knox said the area that is filled with unique creations and demonstrations is about one-third larger than it has ever been. “Along Cable Street — from Santa Monica Avenue all the way to Niagra Avenue — that’s all going to be artists,” Knox said. “That should be really, really fun to see a lot of new artists in here. We always have to turn down so many of them that we decided to expand the area.” As usual, unique vendors will fill Newport Avenue with all variety of gifts and goods. Knox said there are a handful of new vendors this year. “It never ceases to amaze me how many vendors have these little businesses,” Knox said. Other highlights of the fair are five stages of music, including a 92107 stage dedicated to OB musicians, a skateboard demonstration from Ocean Beach Skate and Surf Shop, a Wonderland children’s area, a community mural project and a raffle to help pay for the Fourth of July community fireworks show off the Ocean Beach Pier. ICAM students prepare for a hi-tech and Internet-driven market BY WILL BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS ICAM is an acronym for Interdisciplinary Computing In The Arts Major. It’s one of the newest majors at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with about 180 students enrolled. ICAM is a joint venture of the Visual Arts and the Music departments. ICAM majors learn a broad range of skills, including computing, electronics, art, music, sound design, video, film and photography, all of which are extremely valuable in today’s hi-tech and Internet-driven market. “ICAM is really a great major. First of all, it’s a pipeline into the very best graduate schools,” said Brett Stahlbaum, a UCSD visual arts professor, who, along with electronic music professor Peter Otto, co-directs ICAM. “Our students are well-versed in a multiplicity of skills. They learn the lingua franca of today’s market. Secondly, if they do decide to go out into the business world, they are the type who can come in, catch on and contribute.” Even so, UCSD has been hard-hit by the state budget cuts this year and ICAM has had fewer resources to work with. Still, Stahlbaum is confident “Even though these are hard times ...we have had cutbacks and our graduating stu-

dents are facing the great recession … it’s still a good time to be an artist,” he said. “Artists are creative by nature. They know they have to go out and make their own luck and their own career. Our students are equipped to do this. They will survive ... and prosper.” At the end of each year, ICAM holds a series of presentations of final projects by graduating seniors. This year, the series was called “Unchained: Graduating into the Great Recession.” It was a three-day event, beginning with exhibitions and installations in the Mandeville Annex gallery, then moving on to performance pieces, music and film at Porters Pub, and culminating with the best of the best at the Conrad Prebys Music Center’s Experimental Theater. Tomas Durkin, who is headed for the MFA program at the Academy of Art Institute in San Francisco, designed a small LCD visual display box which was wired to a computer. The box was placed at various locations around the campus, from bathrooms to the chancellor’s office. Students could send messages to the LCD to be read by all who pass by. Mintae Kim, who was born in Seoul, Korea, added sound to the last 10 minutes of the Charlie Chaplin film “City Lights” to make it into a “talkie.” This is a great film which is considered to have some of the most roman-

tic footage in all of Hollywood history. It definitely is a real tear jerker and Kim brought it up to date. Christina Sanchez took her fascination with all the buttons on DVD player control modules and designed her own table-size controller for adjusting and manipulating a video that she filmed. Kristen Zwicker’s project was titled “Who You Calling Bitch?” She interviewed various people on video about what they thought of the word “bitch” and displayed the resulting footage on a LCD screen mounted inside the belly of a female manikin. Trevor LeVieux developed a computer program in which the viewer could go into a virtual garden and plant a tree. As the branches and leaves grew, different musical sounds were produced so that one could both see and hear the garden grow. Genichiro Kobayashi developed a video game with a motion sensor so that it could be played with arm and hand movements instead of using a joy stick. Mathew Wohl designed a computer music program that responded to the notes he played on his upright bass to create a duet of one. The highlight of the whole series was the

You probably have heard of smooth jazz or cool jazz or Dixieland jazz or even avant-garde jazz. But you might not have heard of “telematic jazz..” It’s the latest thing on the music scene, what jazz contrabassist Mark Dresser calls, “A new sonic reality.” Telematic jazz is actually real-time performance that is played over the Internet by musicians in different geographical locations. Because of new developments in software, a group of musicians in New York can jam along with others in San Diego without there being any noticeable time lag or delay. This opens up incredible possibilities, with the potential for any musician in the world to play along with any other, without all the complications and expense of travel, as long as a computer is available. Dresser is a pioneer of telematic music and is its biggest proponent. His first concert was in 1996 when he streamed from the Kitchen in New York City all the way to the Electronic Café in Los Angles in a jam with Bert Turketsky, his former mentor. Dresser has done about 20 telematic concerts so far, including four just this last spring. This past November, he played telematically with 30 musicians from all around the world in a concert for world

two-fold project of Andrew Vargas. He first re-programmed an Apple iphone’s motion sensors to play an inbuilt synthesizer. When the phone was turned, twisted or tilted it could play music. Vargas also developed an algorithm to play a computerized Yamaha player piano. He composed and played a beautiful piece, which was given a repeat performance, based solely on mathematical determinants. At the conclusion of the ceremonies, ICAM co-director Peter Otto spoke and was noticably moved. “Tonight’s presentations have been very exciting and inspiring for me,” he said. “To see these student’s work come to fruition makes my job so gratifying. It makes it all worthwhile.” For further information see ICAM.com.

peace. Dresser’s deepest hope is for telematic music to evolve to a professional status, not as a replacement for live music, but as a whole new space of music in and of itself. On June 13, Dresser orchestrated a concert of telematic jazz at the Atkinson Theatre in the Calit2 building on the University of California, San Diego campus. It was called “Respiraling: Telematic Jazz Explorations.” The title “Respiraling” comes from spiraling, a swirling movement, which is an element or metaphor in a gestural language used for composing and improvising, which Dresser calls “soundpainting.” Joining Dresser live in San Diego were Hafez Modirzadeh on saxophone, the director of the World Music and Dance Program at San Francisco State Univer-

sity; Michael Dressen on slide trombone, a professor of music at UC Irvine and cofounder of the Integrated Composition, Improvisation, and Technology Program there; and Alex Cline on drums, who has 35 years active experience and has played in more than 80 jazz recordings. Streaming from New York at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Music, were Amir ElSaffar on trumpet, a winner of the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition; Oliver Lake on saxophone, the co-founder of The World Saxophone Quartet; Gerry Hemingway on drums, a former Guggenheim Fellow and member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet; Min Xiao Fen on the Pipa (a Chinese instrument resembling a lute), who was the first Chinese musician to play at Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York City; and Sarah Weaver, the conductor, who works with the Arts for Peace Pro-

gram at the United Nations. The stage at Atkinson Theater was set up with Dresser on bass and Cline on percussion stage right and Dressen and Modirzadeh stage left. Between them was a large screen with video feed direct from New York. There, Weaver stood in the middle, back to the audience, conducting, with Lake and ElSaffar to one side and Hemingway and Fen on the other. The evening began with a piece written by Sarah Weaver titled “Telin.” It started with slow rolls on the cymbals with bass, sax and pipa slowly blending in. The next piece, composed by Oliver Lake, was titled “As We Know It.” In this piece, percussion, horns, twangy pipa and rumbling, amplified upright bass came together well, to the accompaniment of Middle Eastern-style singing. The third piece was titled “OilEye,” which is a play on “Eye of the Oil,” which is the vortex, or where the oil

flows from, at the broken well in the Gulf of Mexico. This excellent composition began with a tape of water sounds, along with drummer Hemingway sawing the cymbals with a violin bow. Oliver Lake chimed in with a wonderful beat poem in the Jerome Rothenberg style and then took up his horn to twist and tweak out an incredible sax solo that would rival John Coltrane. The last composition of the evening, called “Tele Whorl,” was written by Dresser. It began with Dresser swirling his arms around and around in spiral after spiral thus leading the musicians into action. Toward the end of this piece, Dresser turned the swirling over to Weaver, and really got down to some serious jazz bass playing. All told, it was a wonderful evening with an elaborate, intricate and highlyvaried tapestry of strange and exotic sounds. For information on upcoming concerts see MarkDresser.com.

Carol Rumsey, chair of the 27th annual Wine & Roses Charity Wine Tasting, dressed in pink and cream, matching the colors she’d chosen for the table decor in the event’s uber-cool Platinum Tent. She wanted a “soft and happy” look, to distract from the world’s woes of oil spills and economic disasters. Wine can provide substantial distraction on its own, and there’s never any shortage of the grape at this event! Wine & Roses (W&R) is the public face of the San Diego International Wine Competition (which begins in March, and is recognized as one of the top wine competitions in the nation). Almost 1,900 wines were submitted this year, evaluated by three-person teams of wine professionals and awarded medals based on their merit. These same wines were then served at W&R, while about 25 top local restaurants — each trying to outdo the others — presented delicious dishes. Trellises of roses and a great live band added to the guests’ enjoyment, and prize-winning wines were available for purchase at substantially-discounted prices. In the middle of the event, an hour-long “reserve” wine tasting gave guests the opportunity to try some truly exceptional wines. And each of the 50 silent auction items included a bottle of award-winning wine and a “Vacu Vin Wine Cooler Sleeve.”

13

The Social Service Auxiliary uses funds from W&R to benefit Camp Oliver, a nonprofit, year-round summer camp and retreat center serving disadvantaged children. Proceeds also benefit The Nursery Trade Scholarship Fund. W&R takes place on the Westgate Hotel’s Roof Garden Terrace, a venue that’s both beautiful and sufficiently large for the number of guests that attend (about 600, this year). And the best place to be at W&R is that exclusive Platinum Tent. It’s where the most generous supporters sit, with reserved tables and special food and wine service. Some never leave, but the reserve wine tasting is a great temptation for the “real” wine connoisseurs in the group — and once they’re out there among all those wine and food purveyors, they find it tough to resist the array of offerings from so many fine vintners and restaurants. ••• Besides being an accomplished financial services expert, Dottie Stanley is also one of La Jolla’s finest artists. She works extensively with figures in both pursuits, and her paintings show people in a variety of settings. Her artworks hang in many La Jolla homes and are also included in prominent collections across America and abroad. Four years ago, Dottie opened a studio and gallery on Fay Street. She sometimes hires models to appear in an entire series of paintings. An open house at the studio last week was attended by a crowd of La Jollans (and others), who enjoyed nice wines and hors d’oeuvres while they perused Dottie’s paintings in the gallery. They also got to meet and speak with Feben Yohannes, one of San Diego’s “Ten Best Dressed Women” and Dottie’s most recent featured model. Several paintings of the beautiful Ethiopian woman were on display.

Interior Design Excellence Awards honor La Jolla homes BY MEAGHAN CLARK | VILLAGE NEWS Two La Jolla residences were honored during San Diego’s 24th annual American Society of Interior Designer’s (ASID) Design Excellence Awards held in May at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park. Robin Wilson Carrier of Robin Wilson Interior Designs won first place for her dining room/wine cellar fusion in a 1929 Spanish Renaissance home, and Kellie McCormick of Bast/Wright Interiors won first place for a La Jolla Scenic Drive kitchen and bath remodel. Carrier’s dining room and climate-controlled wine cellar fuses classic and contemporary design. The client excavated the hillside behind their home to create a Napa Valley-inspired “wine cave”

with a 3,000-bottle capacity, Carrier said. “The whole idea that [the owner] exacted into a hillside, craned equipment over the existing home, paired with a dining room, reveals that it’s really dedicated to a new type of design,” she said. “I want each project to be unique and want each project to complement the architecture, and reflect and complement my client’s lifestyle … It’s a unique challenge resulting in a unique solution each time I work on a project, even if it’s the same house.” The bathroom and kitchen at Rose Lloyd’s home focused on materials that contrast each other, from “warm to cool,” McCormick said. “My client had always dreamed of doing a contemporary home,” said

McCormick, who worked on details with general contractor George Jillich. The “flexible, working kitchen” features custom-made rift oak cabinets on horizontal grain, custom-made cedar windows and doors and Crème Sintra limestone with an antique finish. “She also loved glowing amber glass, so we created a wonderful feature of fiber optic lighting, so the whole wall glows amber,” McCormick said. The rooms were “stunning,” said McCormick, because the “client was open-minded.” Carrier and McCormick are ASID members and have won design excellence awards in the past. Surfrider helps create ocean-friendly gardens BY MEAGHAN CLARK | VILLAGE NEWS The San Diego Surfrider inaugural Garden Assistance Day installed the first ocean-friendly garden (OFG) earlier this month in Bird Rock. Surfrider members and volunteers helped resident Steve Roeder re-landscape his front yard. With the help of professional architect Jeremy Sison of Artemisia Landscape Design, locals put together a garden that incorporated California native plants while promoting Surfrider’s basic OFG ingredients: conservation, permeability and retention. Now, residents have a local, ecofriendly template to recreate for their own homes. Roeder’s garden now consists of chalk lady finger, sea pink and thyme that recycle rainwater back into the garden rather than heading into the street. It is the final step in the OFG program which gives locals the educational tools to dig deep into their own landscaping in an eco-friendly way. Originally, juniper and grass were part of Steve’s yard. These plants that are non-native to California contributed to the excessive amount of pollutants in the ocean and beaches. More often than not, San Diego yards are designed without thought to runoff. Using plants that are nonnative to California requires residents to water more and feed with more pesticides and fertilizers. The result drives these chemicals straight into the drainage system. Water running down San Diego streets is often filled with pesticides and fertilizers from residents watering their lawn or from an athome car wash, and it all runs into the ocean. “Surfrider decided to come up with some proactive solutions to some of the

issues facing our oceans and beaches,” said Dylan Edwards, co-chair for San Diego’s ocean-friendly gardens program. “We realized that a lot of the pollution issues come from our fresh water cycle. The whole part of that is the way people have [built] their landscape in San Diego.” The program’s three-step class provides residents with the means to beautify a refreshing landscape while also having fun. “We have the resources that we can connect people with to try and make this as easy as possible,” Edwards said.

Workshops are offered two to three times a year with a classroom workshop, hands-on workshop and the garden assistance day, the latter of which happened June 6. “The idea is to comprehensively learn [Surfrider methods] so that each homeowner can install their own ocean front garden,” Edwards said. “One of the outcomes of the garden assistance day is that you get a model garden for people to check out.” Now Roeder’s home acts as an example of an ocean friendly-garden in San Diego’s own front yard.

‘All that is French country’ BY MEAGHAN CLARK | VILLAGE NEWS Girard Avenue might soon become known as San Diego’s Mecca for “l’art de vivre à la francaise,” otherwise known as “all that is French country.” With the recent addition of New York-based Pierre Deux, a store that brings the charming French countryside to the United States, French interior design has taken over the block. Sitting alongside La Maisonette and Roche-Bobois, Pierre Deux doesn’t see the other French lifestyle retailers as competition, said public relations and marketing director Naomi Cooper, but as a “complement.”

Standouts include monogrammed pieces from Ankasa, a company known for its work on Oscar de la Renta, Ascada and Vera Wang. Bringing La Jolla’s high-end, retailheavy market in conjunction with the decades-long Provençal décor of Pierre Deux, the venue opened shop just a few weeks ago. For shoppers familiar with some of the 80-plus Pierre Deux locations around the country, La Jolla’s version has a similar “look and feel” to others by means of vignettes representing the bedroom, bath, kitchen and dining spaces. San Diego’s addition will pay tribute to some “fresh looks,” Cooper said. While investment pieces are still staples in the high-end market, Pierre Deux core sellers are accessories to “freshen things up“ until the economy improves. Such standouts include monogrammed pieces from Ankasa, a company known for its work on Oscar de la Renta, Ascada and Vera Wang. In the exclusive partnership with the French company, monogrammed accents will be a signature buy. Formed in a Greenwich Village hovel during the ’60s, Pierre Deux continues to commission smaller artisans from the French countryside who create century-old standards. President and creative director Hedwige Cointreau de Bouteville has roots in northern France dating back 500 years that enable Pierre Deux to re-create family heirlooms and archives in a unique combination of the traditional and modern. Originally developed “with the goal of bringing the authentic French county of Provençal — print, culture, art — to the States,” the company has become a national sensation, Cooper said.

Pierre Deux holds grand opening It seemed as if all of La Jolla attended Pierre Deux’s grand opening on June 17. The area’s elite filled the small venue for its two-hour event, consuming traditional French hors d’oeuvres and dessert platters, catching up with old friends and making significant purchases. Attendees were buzzing about the arrival of this national chain, many familiar with the company. With champagne glasses in hand, patrons perused the shelves filled with monogrammed pillows, soaps, glassware and framed pictures in the compact space.

Signs showed support of La Jolla’s Las Patronas 64th annual Jewell Ball, to which a portion of the evening’s sales were donated. The event was co-hosted by San Diego Home and Garden Magazine. The event follows La Jolla’s soft opening on May 21 and marks the fourth West Coast location for the New York-based chain. The French country specialty shop is just one of several French retailers on Girard Street, an area known for its furniture stores.

K9 PHYSICAL THERAPY/REHAB CUTTING EDGE K9 REHAB www.cuttingedgek9.com We have Been Featured On Local And National News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training •
