innate talent BY WILL BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS According to Erin Roberts, the founder of Prodigy School of Arts, located in Bird Rock at 5725 La Jolla Blvd., all people have innate talent. They just need to have the right situation and right support to help develop it. Roberts said her mission is to assist kids, teens and adults in finding their prodigy within. For this reason, she founded a creative learning center for voice, music, art, theater, creative writing and martial arts. “Everyone is a prodigy in some way. Everyone is born with talent, and we are here to help people find and develop these talents,” she said. Roberts was valedictorian of her high school in Minnesota. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in music theory and voice from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. After college, she taught in Minnesota, but after visiting San Diego, she decided to move. “I came to visit my dad and immediately fell in love with this place,” she said. “I really did not fit in well with the lifestyle in Minnesota but felt right at home out here.” Roberts’ music teaching career in La Jolla began by driving around giving lessons in the evenings, while teaching at Bird Rock Elementary School during the day. Her private business soon grew, so she hired her sister, Anna Roberts, to help her. She opened a studio called “Key of Blue Music,” and then bought a separate studio to provide art lessons. She called it “The La Jolla Art Studio.” The next step SEE PRODIGY, Page 4

Sweet, the CEO of San Diego Model Management, scoured more than 4,000 films submitted for this year’s festival, and only the best of the best will be shown — about 40 films. Last year’s highlights included the special appearances of many directors, actors and actresses who appeared in the films, as well as the fashion designers who created the wardrobes and the outfits worn in the films. “The audience was engrossed by the sights and sounds of a new worldwide art movement,” said Sweet. “The sensuality, drama and glamour all being played out for the first time on the silver screen.” This year’s line-up boasts a few well-known names: Dior's eightSEE LJFFF, Page 5

ART ON FIRE Hallmark Gallery to feature glass-blowing demonstration Saturday BY MARIKO LAMB VILLAGE NEWS

This sculpture is one of many works by local glass artist John Gibbons. Courtesy photo

Hallmark Fine Art Gallery will feature a live glass-blowing demonstration by young California glass artist John Gibbons on Saturday, July 2 from noon to 5 p.m. Michael Hajdaj, director of the gallery, first saw Gibbons’ work at an Art Walk booth in Little Italy. “Quality speaks, and these pieces are definitely quality,” Hajdaj said of Gibbons’ creations. Gibbons, a Northern California native, grew up surrounded by the fine art. His father, a painter and art teacher, collected glass art and European cut crystal. “We always went to these antique bottle shows,” he said of his early infatuation with the art form. “I’ve always wanted to do it for as long as I remember.” In 2003, Gibbons attended Shasta College in Redding where he took a course in glass blowing. When he decided to switch majors from architecture to fine arts, he

advanced his knowledge of glass sculpting at California State University, Chico and Eugene Glass School in Oregon. He doesn’t intend to stop there. In August, Gibbons will further his education at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, one of the most prestigious glass schools in the world. There he will have the opportunity to train Glass artist John Gibbons under the world-renowned, awardpractices his craft. winning glass artist Dale Chihuly. Restoration of arts funding shines light on bleak education budget cuts BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The San Diego Unified School District’s Board of Education voted unanimously to restore full funding — about $1.5 million — to arts education programs for the upcoming 2011-12 school year during its budget meeting on June 21. An unlikely source of funding — solar power — has helped reinstate the previously scheduled cuts by the district’s Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) program. Reduced energy costs from the installation of solar panels at dozens of school sites are anticipated to bring in $1.1 million over the next year.

“The San Diego School District has really been going forward with the solar energy program. They’ve expanded on it and they’ve figured out how to renegotiate the contract for the solar company they work with so they’d be paid out on a regular basis instead of as a lump sum at the end of the year,” said San Diego Alliance for Arts Education Chair Victoria Plettner-Saunders. “They’re doing everything they can to get a seemingly impossible situation to turn around.” Saunders said. Board member Scott Barnett, who crafted the motion said it was always his intention to find the funding to restore the arts program.

“We just needed to figure out where,” he said. Thirty-five teaching positions, primarily music instructors in elementary schools, and the Suzuki violin program at Crown Point Music Academy were secured through this reinvestment. Although funding for elementary school arts programs is back, more than one in ten teachers in San Diego remains laid off, including La Jolla High and Muirlands Middle Schools Instrumental Music Director Michael Fiedler. Although the music program still exists at both schools, six instrumental music teachers have passed through the position in the last eight years, shrinking the program by more than 80 percent in

less than a decade. Despite Fiedler’s ability to get the program headed back in the right direction, the district laid him off due to senioritybased cuts. “The problem is keeping a strong and consistent focus,” Fiedler said. “It is questionable how long the program can sustain this kind of shifting.” He said there will definitely be a music program at both schools next year, but right now nobody knows who will be teaching it. “It could be me or it could be someone who has taught elementary school choir for 15 years and has no experience at the secondary level,” he said. “Both principals are fighting to keep me in the posi-

tion, but this is a situation that is largely out of their hands.” For the fourth consecutive year, the board faces drastic cost-cutting measures — $114 million in total — to balance its $1 billion operating budget based on state deficits. The board must pass its final budget by Thursday, June 30. To donate to La Jolla High School's "Conquer the Cuts" — a nonprofit effort to help restore $200,000 in budget shortfalls for La Jolla High School's 2011-12 school year — visit http://www.ljhs.sandi.net/Foundation/ConquerTheCuts.html or call Executive Director Sandi Pawl at (858) 551-1250.

of expansion was to combine both studios at her present address under the concept of “Prodigy.” Roberts now has ten instructors working for her. She herself specializes in voice and piano lessons. On a personal note, she loves to sing jazz songs by artists like Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Hallie Bodenstab, a freshman at La Jolla High School, has been Roberts’ student for the past five years. “I love coming here and studying with Erin,” Bodenstab said. “It is a very positive and encouraging environment.” Some of the other instructors at Prodigy include Joel Davis, who teaches string instruments like guitar and

bass, and Frank Li, Prodigy’s violin instructor. In an unusual step for an arts school, John Duczakowski was brought in to teach Jing Shen Koushu martial arts. After taking Duczakowski’s classes themselves, Roberts and her fiancé, Ryan Hall, decided the instructor should have a role in the new school. Duczakowski teaches a practical self-defense system combing the best aspects of nine different martial arts styles. “If someone grabs a kid or tries to abduct him or her, we teach them how to deal with it and find a way to escape,” Duczakowski said. “For adults, we teach them what to do in three to five seconds that might save their life or someone else’s life.” Hall is a partner in the business, as well as the school’s financial advisor. Ryan first met Erin at Whole Foods

Market in La Jolla, where he helped her pick up a whole carton of blueberries that she had accidentally spilled on the floor. Hall’s background is in property management, but he has a deep interest in human potential. He said he believes that people often do not learn the important things in traditional education — things like how to develop inborn talents, protect one’s self or combine spiritual and material aspects of life. He said he would like to see the school curriculums expand to include all the things that are important for the growth and cultivation of the human being. In conjunction with TapFever Dance Studios, Prodigy recently began visual and performing arts summer camps. Marvel at the sparkle San Diego offers myriad fireworks options For those looking for the best possible place to view fireworks on the Fourth of July, La Jolla Cove might just be the closest and the finest. However, for those looking for a Monday night on the town, San Diego has myriad possibilities. Almost every beach community in the county offers some kind of Independence Day celebration, and they all promise to entertain. Downtown’s bayfront community, however, offers the biggest show, with several viewing options. Seaport Village provides front-row seats to the annual Big Bay Boom, the Port of San Diego’s fireworks extravaganza, which ignites explosives from five barges strategically placed in the bay, starting at 9 p.m. In addition to the fireworks display, the show will be set to live music broadcasted simultaneously from Walrus 105.7 FM, and San Diego Fox 5 will televise the show live from the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The show is anticipated to last 17 minutes. Viewing locations for Big Bay Boom include Shelter Island, Harbor Island, B Street Pier, Broadway Pier, Coronado Ferry Landing, Imperial Beach and more. For all viewing locations, barge placement, parking and public transit information, visit www.thebigbay.com. For other, less conventional viewing options, revelers may choose to visit the Maritime Museum, which offers several places from which to see the show, including the observation deck of the museum’s historic 1898 steam ferry, the Berkeley.

To get closer to the action, the museum also has a fireworks cruise on board the schooner Californian. Leaving the museum at 6:30 p.m., passengers will experience an event like no other when the Californian’s six-pound deck guns join the pyrotechnic presentation. Tickets are $65. For the same price, viewers can experience a yacht cruise aboard the Chere Amie, but without the ear-blasting broadside. Another option is a ride on the 1914 Pilot at 7:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy the show from the water, a much different view than from land, for $25. The other seminar will feature the creators of a San Diego-based online fashion community called Mahal Style, which has nearly 50,000 Facebook followers. Topics of the forums will include film implementation on the Internet and fashion marketing on Facebook. Nicole Quiroz, editor of Mahal Style, said she stumbled upon an article about LJFFF on www.signonsandiego.com, and thought “fashion and film is such a perfect marriage of beauty and art.” “I knew we had to be part of this festival,” she said. “That niche, it hasn’t been touched on and has so much room to grow. ONE MINUTE WITH LEON CAMPBELL The Fourth of July, 1776 fell on a Thursday. The advantage of a Thursday is that it has three working days ahead of it, so by Thursday the wrinkles have been ironed out. It also avoids Fridays, when wanting to get an early start on the weekend is already compromising the working day. These factors probably were present when Thursday was the selected date to

sign the Declaration of Independence. Signing took courage since the British could look at the declaration as being a death warrant for those signing. However, the old rhyme predicting “Thursday’s child has a long way to go” would lessen the chance of an early death. I expect to celebrate this year’s Fourth of July by not signing anything, particularly my own death warrant. I have a long way to go.

AUTHOR Q & A University City author talks about publishing her first manuscript “Gwendolyn: A Love Story is a fictional novel about a woman struggling with mental-health problems, and whose life takes an unlucky turn — landing her homeless in the streets of Pacific Beach. University City resident Pattie Leo Krohn self-published the 366-page book, a labor of love she began years ago but never had the time to finish. The out-of-work math and science teacher finished the project over the last year and said she has been delighted to share it with friends. Krohn hopes to change people’s views and assumptions about homeless people through the trials and tribulations of the protagonist in “Gwendolyn: A Love Story.

La Jolla Village News: What was the publishing process like and how was it to see your work in print? Pattie Leo Krohn: It is very difficult to publish fiction these days. Agents and publishers will not even look at unsolicited manuscripts. I decided to be very brave and just publish this myself because I always have friends who want to read my work ‌ and I end up photocopying too much! Indie publishing is great. I wrote, edited, copyedited and published this book without anyone else reading it ‌ and then I just waited. Self-publishing is very easy and can cost absolutely nothing. pletely invented and not based on anyone. Over the years I have talked to homeless people a lot just because I find them interesting, and in particular, the question of why this has happened to them and not to me. The characters are completely fictional but to me they became very real. The story takes place in Pacific Beach because it’s the kind of place where homeless people are more accepted, and as a community it exhibits values of compassion that I wanted for this book. I wanted Gwendolyn to be able to really live there, and when I’m in Pacific Beach I really expect to see her ‌ living behind the library. I incorporated Coronado because it’s a well-known place famous for its luxurious accommodations and beaches. It’s a place easy to imagine. LJVN: How did you come up with the twisting plot? PLK: I spent about 15 years working in psychiatry research at the University of California, San Diego. I have worked with some very ill people. I also have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and have studied math and physics for a teaching credential. I think this is a story that could actually happen. People are born with genes that predispose them to illnesses like schizophrenia and often, after suffering through a very traumatic event, they will have that first break from reality. There is no cure. So it makes sense that Ann Morgan would never

recover and, in fact, does not wish to recover because that world is safe to her. LJVN: How would you describe the book to someone who has never read it? PLK: This book is a story that tells why a woman who could have lived a normal life became destitute and homeless. I want people to reserve (or give up) their judgment when they see people living on the streets. We don’t know what happened to them or why they are there. HOLLY LAUREN BEEDLE

Pearly hue is fashion's daily dose Do you know which shade of white works best for your wardrobe? Do you ask yourself what's the proper way to wear white while getting dressed? In my experience consulting professionals on personal style and assisting in diagnosing fashion dilemmas, I’ve stumbled upon a few local shopping hot spots that prescribe just the right shades and styles of white.

Crisp and clean Too often, department stores offer unflattering white tops that bore more than soar, but Phyllis A Lanphier, owner of Sigi’s Boutique, knows the best whites are bright and a well-designed piece will flatter any figure. She offers the most beautifully-cut, crisp, clean-looking white button-down blouses that are proudly American-made and designed by Jill McGowan. The sight of these cute feminine designs, complimented with luxurious French cotton, is just what the doctor ordered. Sigi's, La Jolla’s go-to shopping spot for fine women's clothing, accessories and gifts, is located at 7888 Girard Ave.

Front and center sits the Esse walking shoe among other fabulous white, textured accessories at Rangoni Shoes. HOLLY LAUREN BEEDLE

Lucky for La Jolla, two chefs who are among the nation’s most nationally-recognized cookbook authors, are living and cooking right down the road at the Marine Room. “Flying Pans: Two Chefs One World,” the debut cookbook from Bernard Guillas and Ron Oliver, won top honors at the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) 2011 Cookbook Awards earlier this month — beating out more than 500 other cookbook entries from around the world. Guillas and Oliver, who have been cooking together for 12 years, beat out celebrity chefs such as Michael Chiarello and Rick Bayless. Chiarello hosts cooking shows on both the Food Network and the Fine Living Network, and Bayless has appeared on “Iron Chef America,” but is better known for his PBS TV series “Mexico: One Plate at a Time.” Guillas, who self-published the book using his own money, said he was particularly thrilled to beat out some of the biggest publishing companies in the nation. Bernard Guillas Guillas, who is on his fourth passport, shares summer recipes and Oliver, also an from his award-winning avid traveler, fashioned the book cookbook.

Pianist returns for four-week Liszt marathon BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE VILLAGE NEWS

San Diego native Gustavo Romero is returning to La Jolla in July for the 13th annual Athenaeum Summer Festival, during which he will play four Sunday piano recitals devoted exclusively to works by Hungarian pianist/composer Franz Liszt (18111886). The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library and Romero, who plays entirely from memory, planned the first festival to honor the Athenaeum’s 100th anniversary. Each year Romero selects a composer to honor, and this year, being Liszt’s bicentenary, the honoree is Liszt, who raised the level of respect for musicians of the time. “Liszt did that in a very grand way,” said Romero in a June 9 interview at the Athenaeum. “He institutionalized the recital, becoming the first to play solo recitals. He was the first to create an evening, a concert that was an experience from which people came away with something very special. In addition to the visual aspect, he understood how to put a program together, what to play when, not only making it an evening of great musical experience.” Romero, a former child prodigy raised in San Diego, is not only a piano virtuoso, he is a scholar who knows and reveres composers, especially those of the 19th century. “Was it Schiller who said that when gods come they come in droves?” he asked. “Between 1809 and 1913 we had the amazing arrival of Mendelssohn (1809), Chopin and Schumann (1810) – two of the most important composers of the 19th century – and then, the following year, Liszt, and then, in 1813, Wagner!” Romero said unlike Schumann and Chopin, Liszt had an incredible performance talent and was able to establish a solo piano career. He considers Schumann the most original, and the music of Chopin superior to Liszt’s. But he pointed out that though we hear music everywhere, on CDs and in the concert hall, the people of the time were not so fortunate. “If you didn’t hear the Beethoven 9th, who knows when or where you’d ever hear it in your lifetime? Liszt paraphrased opera (written by others) to keep the tunes before the public. He transcribed a Bach prelude and fugue for organ. He knew all the lieder, all the orchestral pieces and was interested to keep that breadth of music alive in the general public. He just happened to be the right person to be the public purveyor of the great music of the time and also what had been written till that time.”

Liszt toured between 1840 and 1847, playing before multitudes in Vienna, Budapest, Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Constantinople. He was so popular that Heinrich Heine, the great German poet, described the phenomenon as “Lisztomania.” Later Liszt was dubbed the rock star of classical music. As for Romero, he is totally immersed in what he calls “the scope of this extremely rich life.” Romero is a piano professor at the University of North Texas, where he teaches 18 graduate students. At the time of this interview, he had just returned from concerts in Korea, having spent the entire month of May in Asia, including Taipei, Seoul and Jeju Island. He left immediately after the interview on a recital tour of California that included Los Angeles, Glendale, Pasadena,

Santa Barbara, Oakland, Santa Rosa and San Francisco. His La Jolla recitals are scheduled at 4 p.m. on July 10, 17, 24 and 31 at the Neurosciences Institute, 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive. Among the works to be performed over the course of the four weeks are the Bach/Liszt Prelude and Fugue in A minor, La Gondola lugubre, Czardas macabre, a sprinkling of the Hungarian Rhapsodies and the Mephisto Waltz.

The American Lung Association (ALA) in California fights to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. It works to make the air in every American community clean and healthy, to free people from the addictive grip of tobacco smoking, to clear the air in public spaces and workplaces of secondhand smoke, and to free children from having to battle airborne poisons and from the fear of asthma attacks. The ALA held its annual “Evening in the Sky” benefit gala on June 17 at USD’s Hahn Center. Following a reception and a big silent auction, guests were seated for a superb dinner featuring a warm goat cheese salad, beef tenderloin with pesto grilled shrimp and a dessert with Grand Marnier cream. During the evening’s program, Vikita Poindexter and her son Carey spoke very eloquently about their experiences. Carey’s a chronic asthmatic suffering from food allergies, eczema and related problems. Diagnosed at 18 months, he was only expected to reach the age of 10. He’ll be 13 this November and looks healthy, despite having been hospitalized 26 times. But ALA helps him lead a more active and healthy life, through such programs as Southern California Asthma Medical Program’s special “SCAMP Camp” for asthma sufferers. Carey was very enthusiastic about going. The event presented three Clean Air Circle Honorees: Asthma Medical Group co-director, UCSD professor and SCAMP Camp medical director Dr. Michael Welch, who is clearly loved by his patients (including baseball pro Tony Gwynn Jr., who suffered asthma attacks until age 9); Pacific Eco-Companies CEO Fred Maas, developer of green communities and clean technologies; and Joe Kellegian, Deputy Mayor of Solana Beach — the first continental U.S. city to ban smoking on its beaches, starting a nationwide movement.

president/CEO), Mary and Joe Kellejian, Trudy and Dr. Mike Welch (all three men are honorees)

in the costumes of greeters and stiltwalkers, in the music of young people playing Tibetan percussion instruments, and in much of the party’s impressively beautiful and colorful décor. The zoo was transformed into a Himalayan paradise, replete with exotic animals, delicious foods and colorfully-clad people (except for the men, who — for the most part — just wore their usual black-and-white tuxedos). This was quite possibly the most beautiful R*I*T*Z event to date. (It should be noted that Debbie Turner’s main squeeze, the incredibly philanthropic Conrad Prebys, is the zoo’s most generous supporter ever. His donations — so far — total $25 million.) Arriving guests heard Indonesian music played by students from San Diego’s Museum School on xylophones, drums, gongs and flutes. They enjoyed grilled lamb “lollipops,” crab cakes, dim sum, sushi and much more. Across from the flamingo lagoon, they met conservation ambassador Joan Embery, who presented several exotic animals up-close on her usual stage — which will henceforth bear her name. Zookeepers and trainers provided close encounters with numerous animal ambassadors, including a nosy aardvark, a regal cheetah, a friend-

ly wolf, a cuddly koala, a prickly porcupine, a comical armadillo, a small but mature alligator and two watchful owls. Rose petals rained down as partygoers entered the dazzling dining area, passing beneath an arch dramatically draped with red silk. Hundreds of red and purple lanterns hung overhead, and colorful murals depicting dozens of tigers and other Asian animals lined the area’s perimeter. A 12-foot full moon hovered above the stage, where a group of about 20 Wayne Foster Entertainment musicians, singers and dancers performed. A particular treat was that Wayne himself played the grand piano throughout the evening. The dinner menu, by the Sheraton’s Steve Black, featured Asian vegetables and incredible boneless short ribs. The live auction included fabulously luxurious tour packages for 12 days in southern Africa or 8 days in India. The net for the party should top $1.7 million, thanks to the generosity of honorary chair Audrey Geisel, who pledged to donate $2 for every dollar the event raised, up to $1 million. Event proceeds will benefit a new Sumatran tiger habitat at the zoo’s Safari Park.

Since its 1984 beginnings, the Zoological Society of San Diego’s annual gala, Rendezvous In The Zoo (or R*I*T*Z), has become one of the city’s best-loved and most-anticipated events. Almost always a sellout, it drew 900 attendees this year. “Moonlight ShangriLa,” the theme chosen by chairs Clarice Perkins and Debbie Turner, materialized

CONTINUED FROM Page 9 after a trip around the world. The masterpiece details dishes from 42 countries, each dish telling a different story and being accompanied by artistically-styled photographs. The some 3,500 IACP voters who chose “Flying Pans” were particularly fond of the way the recipes were paginated and organized, Guillas said, with each component of each dish explained via separate recipes — making it easy to omit or add certain elements of the recipe. “We also purposely included a lot of white space so people can make their own notes,” said Guillas, who is not only the executive chef of the Marine Room, but also head of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club kitchen. “With recipes, you follow them once and then you can make your own recipe. When I am gone, that is what will pass from generation to generation. Then years later, you can look at the notes and that’s an imprint of who

you are on this Earth. You can create your own traditions.” Guillas and Oliver didn’t take a trip around the world to write this book — they wrote it from their own memories, dating back as far as childhood. “It just so happened that Ron and I have always kept a diary ever since we were kids,” Guillas said. “So the book is a collection of vignettes, from when we were kids until now.” Some of the recipes Guillas said he learned from his grandmother in France, and some he has been cooking for years. A couple were even accidents that ended up being amazing. But even though Guillas’s recipes are highly sought after at the Marine Room, he doesn’t consider publishing them to be giving away his secrets. “I always give away my recipes. That’s how I can make an impact on people’s lives,” he said. “We live on this Earth for such a short time when you look at how long ago the world was created. To keep my recipes a secret would be arrogant. Sharing the love means sharing the recipes.”

Managing the Hospital Discharge In April, my 92 year old mother went into the hospital to remove a tumor from her arm, the procedure went well and she was sent home. Three days later, she was back in the hospital because she wasn’t able to handle the complicated wound care regimen. There is a movement to improve care after discharge and to reduce readmissions for the elderly but if your family member has not revamped their discharge process, you may need to take an active role in managing the discharge. TAKE CHARGE: If you believe the hospital is sending a patient home too soon, talk with the doctor. CHECK THE DRUG LIST: Medication errors are a frequent cause of readmissions. Make sure your family member knows when and how to take new pills. MAKE A DISCHARGE PLAN: Most hospitals provide a discharge plan in writing, but it may not be complete and it may be difficult to understand. Make your own plan that will be a guide for the patient, the caregiver and other doctors. CONTACT THE PRIMARY DOCTOR: Request the discharge planner or hospital MD contact the patient’s primary care physician to be followed up or you should do it yourself. The RN Case Managers at Innovative Healthcare Consultants are available 24/7 to help with all these details and they are expert in handling any problems that may arise. Call (877) 731-1442 or see our website at www.innovativehc.com.
