ROCKIN’ July 4

Celebration Bird Rock residents came out in droves for the 32nd annual Beaumont Avenue Fourth of July Celebration and Parade. Winding its way along Beaumont Avenue up to Mira Monte, the event brought neighbors out of their houses and into the streets to watch the cavalcade of red-white-and-blue floats as they made their way through the neighborhood. This year, the theme was “Happy Days on Beaumont Avenue,” and residents came decked out in their finest 1950s attire to celebrate America’s birthday. Even the canine element didn’t miss a chance to dress up for the occasion, Bird Rock residents and parade spectators gather after the event in the intersection and plenty of patriotic dogs behind the La Jolla United Methodist Church. In addition to commemorating our country’s independence, event organizers also celebrated Bird Rock Elementary’s 60th anniversary. The parade finished with a celebration in the cul-de-sac behind La Jolla Methodist Church, complete with food, carnival games and a performance from the band, the “Sophisticats.” — Kendra Hartmann SEE PARADE, Page 6

Rare Warhol photos to be unveiled in La Jolla BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla is home to a number of exclusive fine art galleries and a well-known art museum. But on July 29, Barfly, a restaurant and nightclub, will set the scene for a unique occasion that is of cultural prominence and artistic allure. As part of the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, celebrity photographer Karen Bystedt will be unveiling four 40-by-40-inch neverbefore-seen portraits of Andy Warhol — one of the art world’s most coveted icons. The photographs, which have been stored away in Bystedt’s garage since 1982, will have their world debut at the festival’s opening night directors’ reception. They will go on view downstairs the next day, July 30, on Barfly’s outside patio. The pieces will be open to the public at the venue, located at 909 Prospect St. Exact viewing times are to be determined. Bystedt, then an ambitious film student at New York University, said the photographs were taken as part of a student project capturing the images of male models. “There were so many female models, but nobody did anything on male models,” said the photographer in a phone interview from her Los Angeles studio. “I

Officers detain DUI, hit-and-run suspect near La Jolla Farms Road A man was taken into custody on June 29 after he allegedly collided with an oncoming car and fled on foot to his home. He allegedly veered into the southbound lane because he was driving too fast and collided with

the victims’ vehicle head-on. One of the victims suffered a laceration above the left eye. New cop on the block San Diego Police Capt. Al Guaderrama attended the meeting to provide residents with a recap of the holiday weekend, during which he and fellow officers worked long hours as more than one million people streamed to the beaches for some Fourth of July surf and sun. Guaderrama also introduced Lt. Paul Rorrison, the newest member of the SDPD’s Northern Division. Rorrison is replacing Lt. Jim Filley, who is moving to the downtown Financial Crimes Unit. Filley made an appearance as well, thanking the community for helping him to do his job. “We can’t apply police work to a community without input from all of you,” he said. “This move is bittersweet for me.”

A roundup of the July 5 Bird Rock Community Council meeting are parked. Parker said he will only pick trucks or trailers that have been parked in one location for more than 72 hours. “The purpose of the Hall of Shame is not actually to shame, but to reach out to the owners of the vehicles and make contact with them,” he said. Parker went so far as to invite representatives from Pacific Beach — who have had similar issues with oversize vehicles in their own neighborhoods — to the meeting. Scott Chipman, Lou Cumming and Joe Wilding, all of Pacific Beach, were in attendance to offer their insight into the issue and to propose a joint effort between the two neighborhoods in banning the vehicles from parking on city streets.

Bird Rock going to the dogs

Oversize trucks and trailers have become a recurring problem in the neighborhood, said BRCC President Joe Parker. The nuisance has caused so many neighbors to complain, Parker said, that he has started a “Hall of Shame” column in the Bird Rock newsletter, complete with photos of the offending vehicles and the locations of where they

Parker once again addressed the issue of off-leash dogs in Calumet Park. The problem, he said, had perhaps gotten slightly better, but continues to be a topic of concern. Parker received confirmation from county animal services that a work order had been issued to monitor the park, but he — and other residents — were still see-

ing and hearing of instances of dogs running free. Some residents described incidents in which larger, off-leash dogs attacked smaller dogs that were being walked on a leash. One resident said his neighbor’s dog had been attacked twice. Parker echoed the concern that it wasn’t dogs being walked off leash that was the issue per se, but rather the danger of having free-running dogs that might act violently. “The situation is not about off-leash dogs, but about confrontation between owners and safety when it comes to aggressive dogs,” he said.

What is the difference between a funded and an

unfunded trust? Once you have drafted your Living Trust, there are two important steps to take. The first is to execute your Trust by signing all of the necessary documents in front of witnesses and a Notary Public, where indicated. You must then fund your Trust by transferring your assets into the Trust. It is really quite simple. For example, Virginia Weber with a Quitclaim Deed, you can transfer real Laskowitz “Protecting Family Assets” property from your current ownership to your Trust (some states require different procedures for transferring real property). Such a transfer is not considered to be a sale, therefore no reassesment of your property will take place and no tax consequences will result. Similarly, you need to contact your bank or other financial institutions and request that they change the name on your accounts to the name of your Living Trust. Often the institution will give you a Certification of Trust form. If you need to transfer your stock certificates into your Trust, you should notify your broker and/or the company in which you own shares for specific instructions. When these steps are completed, your Trust is fully funded.

Who thought you could pig out on barbeque and help a fellow La Jollan’s cause all at the same time? Big Brothers, Big Sisters San Diego CEO and longtime La Jollan Paul Palmer is working alongside Phil’s BBQ once again this year to bring San Diegans the third annual “BIG BBQ at the Ballpark,” set to take place on Aug. 15. Last year, the event sold out and Phil’s raised $40,000 for Big Brothers, Big Sisters “Operation Bigs” — a program that serves military children who have a deployable parent and could benefit from one-toone mentoring. This year, Phil’s BBQ is determined to reach $50,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 50-year anniversary, according to a recent statement. “I strongly believe in the support of local families, especially military families that sacrifice so much for the greater good of our country,” said Phil Pace, owner of Phil’s BBQ. Tickets are $25 per person, and will include the following: access to a private pre-game tailgate party on the southeast side of Petco Park from 5 to 7 p.m.; a meal featuring Phil’s award-winning ribs, chicken, two side dishes and a Coke beverage; and a ticket in Phil’s section for the 7:05 p.m. baseball game at Petco Park. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at the Phil’s BBQ locations in Point Loma or San Marcos, or online at www.sdbigs.org. All proceeds from ticket sales will directly benefit Big Brother Big Sisters Operation Bigs.

tory, Warhol's original New York City studio, and she was surprised when the artist himself answered the phone. “I told him about the idea and he said “Sure.” He really loved the idea,” said Bystedt. “In his interview with me he said he loved it when people looked at him as a model.” Bystedt has since gone on to have a fruitful celebrity photography career, photographing the likes of Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin, Johnny Depp, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, just to name a few. She said she read a Financial Times article recently that discussed how Warhol’s art is “going through the roof” and got the idea to dig up the negative from that 1982 shoot and share the images with the world. Although there are many photos of Warhol out there, Bystedt said, the ones that have been sitting in her garage are of particular rarity. “He didn’t do a lot sitting for people,” she said. “This is one of the only shoots he did.” Arlene Weiss, who is helping organize the showing, said the photographs will be on sale for $25,000 each and will only appear in a few viewings. After La Jolla, they will head to Los Angeles and then Miami.

Weiss said that after finding out about the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, which is embarking this month on its second year, she said she knew the event was the perfect backdrop for the rare photographs’ introduction to the world. “ [ Wa r h o l ] would have never wanted to have his photos up on a wall and have nothing going on around them. Following Warhol and his relationship to art, film, fashion and people in general, I thought the festival would be a good fit,” said Weiss. “I also think the festival is incredible, something I’d like to see build out and tour. I think Warhol, if he were around, he’d want to be part of something like this.” For La Jolla Fashion Film Festival (www.ljfff.com) information contact Fred Sweet at Fsweetsd@gmail.com.

They may look good enough to eat, but the paintings and sculptures at Donovan’s of La Jolla are strictly off limits – so you’ll have to content yourself with the USDA prime beef, the eatery’s star attraction. THE CHAMBER’S MISSION The Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce strengthens businesses and the community through leadership, prosperity, information, communication, and community involvement.

Over the last few months we have had several fantastic mixers at Finch’s Wine Bar and Bistro, Vigilucci’s and the La Jolla Strip Club. We are also continually adding informative and interesting content to our beautiful new website: www.ljgtcc.com. Our new hotel & restaurant guide and community directory are getting more listings added all the time. Our next two mixers are scheduled for Apollonia Greek Restaurant in the Costa Verde Shopping Center and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. Our mixers are always scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month. Finch’s Wine Bar and Bistro on Girard Street in downtown La Jolla provided us their intimate patio for our June mixer. The soothing sounds of their beautiful fountain provided a graceful backdrop for the excellent classical guitar serenade of Jorge Camberos. Approximately 40 spirited networkers enjoyed a sampling of Finch’s scrumptious appetizers. Attendees included Mr. John Weil, The chief-ofstaff for San Diego County Supervisor, Ms. Pam Slater-Price. Our special thanks to Finch’s owners, Marshall, Linda, Nick and Tiana Ravden. Over the next several months we will be hosting several ribbon cuttings for new members, including Partners Urgent Care, located at 4085 Governor Drive. I hope to see everyone next week at Apollonia. Sea stargazing

a colorfulconundrum California mussels are the mainstay diet of ocher sea stars living along open coastline. The acorn barnacles conveniently attached to the mussel shells likely make a nice starter course. ©2011 Judith Lea Garfield

BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD | VILLAGE NEWS At a mile long, La Jolla Shores makes for a fun beach stroll, particularly during very low tides when I can walk on hardpacked sand. During these times, I head to the pilings that support Scripps Pier, as well as to the rock pile at the far north end of the Shores. These two substrates do not disappoint when it comes to seeing colorful ocher sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus). Though the species name, ochraeus, hints at the animals’ ocher pigmentation — ocher typically defined as a yellowish earth tone — these sea stars may also be brown, orange, red, or purple. It’s curious that individual ocher stars link arm-inarm or pile one atop another, each sporting a different color. What is the color variation about? For the longest time, no one had a clue. Relatively recently, a research group chose to tackle the question. Its results, though not definitive, have at least spilled some of the ocher stars’ colorful secrets. While complete answers to the color puzzle aren’t available, I think the progress made so far is worth sharing. Ocher sea stars range from along our coast throughout the California Current, so the survey included sites from Southern California to Alaska, including British Columbia. It turns out that, across the board, north to south, most ocher stars are brown-reddish, with orange animals a relative minority. The purple stars are most limited on the open coast but at sites in isolated areas, such as inlets off Washington and British Columbia, purple ocher stars comprise almost the entire population. Because color shifts in an isolated population suggest a species is or is in the process of diverging from the original population, purple stars were subjected to genetic studies. Results showed that not only isn’t the purple population distinct, no ocher star, no matter the color or location, showed enough of a genetic difference to even be close to becoming a separate species. Of course, with so many possible color variations, even in individuals sharing a tide pool, the likelihood of a single underlying genetic component cannot be disregarded. So while not back to square one, because the researchers knew for certain they were dealing with one genetic population, the link between color and animal continued to evade. They next considered other parameters, such as diet, to provide an explanation. Interestingly, individuals living along the open coast from California to Washington dine on the ubiquitous California mussel Mytilus californianus, whereas purple ocher stars found in protected coastal areas feed on acorn barnacles (Balanus spp.). Prey consumed is less about choice because no mussels were found in those isolated areas. Yet, food is a clue because mussels harbor carotenoid pigments, not unlike those responsible for turning carrots orange. Can it be that the orange pigment in mussels is responsible for the ocher sea stars’ yellowish, orange and red pigments? Likely so, at least in part. If stars aren’t pigging out on mussels, does it mean that purple is their true underlying color? Unfor-

Above: When ocher sea stars get an appetite, they have their choice of nearby mussels cemented atop the rocks. Talk about sitting ducks. Below: Reddish, orange, and purple ocher sea stars show neither preference nor prejudice when keeping company with others of a different color. ©2011 Judith Lea Garfield

tunately, the answer here isn’t cut and dried. Along other protected shoreline of Washington and Canada, communities of purple stars do have access to mussels and yet they remain purple. True, these are bay mussels (Mytilus sp.) not the California species but they harbor the same carotinoids. And what of the purple ocher stars I see locally in tide pools and on pier pilings in La Jolla? They live along the open coast surrounded by California mussels. So what’s the impetus here? Adding to the confusion are results from in-house laboratory studies, which correlate color to maturity. Some ocher sea stars were observed flip-flopping on color, such as when some orange adults turned purple over time and when juveniles didn’t stick to one color. After this study, it looks like age, water turbulence, food source and genetics may individually or collective determine where in the color spectrum an ocher sea will land, at least for a time. As is the hallmark of research, once begun, more questions arise than answers realized. While researchers continue exposing the shady secrets of ocher sea stars, my interest extends beyond the hows of color variation to the whys of color variation. That the natural world is anything but frivolous, I wonder what benefits the different colors impart. — Judith Lea Garfield, biologist and underwater photographer, has authored two natural history books about the underwater park off La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores. P2K: Larry Donofrio (P2K board chair), Susan Golding (P2K president/CEO), Joan Waitt (host), Rosio and Michael Flynn (event co-chairs)

Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas La Jolla’s bighearted Joan Waitt has hosted numerous benefits at her beautiful estate near the top of Mount Soledad, the most recent being a June 20 dinner and concert with the famed Doobie Brothers. It was the third annual Promises Summer Concert Gala by Promises2Kids (P2K), a San Diego-based nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of child abuse through prevention, education and advocacy. Founded 30 years ago as the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, the organization’s accomplishments include raising $12 million to build the Polinsky Children’s Center and $6 million for the creation of the San Pasqual Academy. The gala started with cocktails and a big silent auction. As sunset approached, the guests were seated. Numbering over 500, they were welcomed by former San Diego mayor Susan Golding, now P2K CEO and president. She introduced the host and event chairs Rosio and Michael Flynn — and announced the receipt of an anonymous $250,000 donation — before a delicious dinner was served. Many bidders at charity auctions clearly aren’t trying to score a bargain, but interested instead in finan-

cially assisting a worthy cause. The event’s first live auction item was the privilege of having the valets bring the high bidder’s car up first, immediately after the event, already loaded with all his or her other successfullywon auction items. That brought in a cool $3,500. Bidders were similarly generous throughout the auction, and when financial pledges were solicited Doug Manchester and Joan Waitt stepped up with $25,000 each. Others also gave substantial amounts. The Grammy Award-winning Doobie Brothers put on a rousing hourlong concert, reprising many of their greatest hits from their four decades of “soul-infused boogie rock” — songs, like “China Grove” and “Black Water,” still played on classic and oldies stations. They added cuts from their newest album, 2010’s “World Gone Crazy,” and closed with the classic “Listen to the Music.” A rockin’ good time was had by all. ••• Improvements continue at the Riford Center on La Jolla Boulevard. They’ve gutted the entire courtyard and installed a new patio, irrigation system, sustainable garden, benches, LED lighting, overhead “sails” for shade, and artistic Torrey Pines logos. Everything’s very low-maintenance. Members and friends celebrated with wine and hors d’oeuvres at a June 24 party. ••• “The place is crawlin’ with cops,” whispered one wag, as a police helicopter hovered above the modernistic La Jolla Farms property. A new arrival, seeing the squad cars lining the circular driveway and uniformed officers everywhere, asked congenial host Ramin Porteymour, “Has your

party been raided already?” No worries — everything was on the up-and-up. The party was the inaugural “Cop Hop,” a benefit for San Diego’s Police Foundation (SDPF) and Police Historical Association (SDPHA), and the host was prominent in both. SDPF, founded in 1998 by then-chief (now mayor) Jerry Sanders, facilitates the funding of unbudgeted SDPD needs. (SPDF CEO Sara Napoli proudly announced a $20,000 donation from Craig Irving for 144 digital cameras needed by patrol officers for evidence collection.) SDPHA preserves the history of San Diego law enforcement; their artifacts (including the largest collection of restored police vehicles in the country) are publicly displayed in a museum on College Avenue. Among the nearly 500 distinguished guests were Mayor Sanders, Police Chief William Lansdowne, Sheriff Bill Gore, former chief and sheriff Bill Kolender, and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, introduced by the mayor as “my very favorite chief law enforcement officer” as he officially endorsed her to replace him as mayor. Honoring SDPD history, the party had a 1940s theme, reflected in the couture of many guests and the fashion models mingling among them. Several fine restaurants served up a wide variety of foods at stations throughout the venue. There were bars, too — and Yellow cab provided two “Tipsy taxis” at reduced rates, to take home people who’d had a bit too much to drink. Big Time Operator played for dancing. There were cakes for dessert, but inexplicably, there was not a donut to be found on the property…

pet services K9 PHYSICAL THERAPY/REHAB CUTTING EDGE K9 REHAB www.cuttingedgek9.com We have Been Featured On Local And National News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
