Lifeguards promise protection despite cuts BY ALYSSA RAMOS | VILLAGE NEWS

Despite city budget cuts, San Diego lifeguards will keep normal hours, staffing area beaches from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. throughout the summertime, from Ocean Beach to Black’s Beach in La Jolla. “People won’t notice any difference when they come to the beach,” said San Diego lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum. Due to budget cuts, lifeguards lost three permanent lifeguard

Suspected serial rapist hangs himself in jail cell BY ALYSSA RAMOS | VILLAGE NEWS

Police on July 1 arrested an alleged serial rapist suspected in a string of seven sexual attacks and robberies committed countywide over the past year. But San Diego sheriff’s deputies found 39-year-old Thomas James Parker hanging from a sheet inside his cell around 7 a.m. July 3. The suspected rapist died shortly after, police said. “A deputy found him in the cell and took appropriate action. We

contacted medical and then he was pronounced dead at the scene,” said San Diego Sheriff Lt. Julie Sutton. “It was him. He was alone, that’s my understanding, that he was not on suicide watch.” Police matched Parker’s DNA to at least three of seven attacks, including a Nov. 7, 2008 assault at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Mesa Housing, said UCSDPD Det. Bill McIntyre. SEE RAPIST, Page 7

Gutsy La Jolla athlete up for grueling ocean challenge BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS

Racing a Jet Ski at 60 miles per hour in 58 miles of open ocean is not easy for any athlete of any skill level. That’s what makes the task ahead even more daunting for La Jollan Warren Frank and Point Loman Ryan Levinson, who plan to race July 12 in the Long Beach to Catalina and Back Offshore National Championship. Their participation is especially impressive because Frank and Levinson are physically compromised athletes. Frank’s left leg is amputated above the knee, and Levinson was diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHMD), a genetic

disorder that results in muscle loss. Frank and Levinson are the first compromised athletes to compete in the annual personal watercraft race and will participate in the challenged athletes division. Both athletes will face unique challenges during the race. For Frank, the challenges of the race are straightforward — but made more complicated by his prosthetic leg. “If everything is meant to be the way it’s supposed to be, I don’t really see it as a disability,” Frank said. “Sometimes I get the SEE GUTSY, Page 3

NEWSbriefs Suspected ice cream bandit faces 7 counts The alleged “this ain’t no joke” bandit who held up yogurt and ice cream stores in La Jolla and Pacific Beach will have a preliminary hearing on July 23. Jamel Powers, 24, is charged with robbing the La Jolla’s TF Yogurt shop in the 8800 block of Villa La Jolla on April 5 and California Pizza Kitchen on April 2. Powers is also charged with holding up Cold Stone Creamery on Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach on March 29. Powers faces seven robbery charges. According to San Diego police, the robber said the same thing during each hold-up: “This ain’t no joke. I’m serious. This is a robbery.” Hence the nickname. Powers allegedly first robbed the Cold Stone Creamery in Hillcrest on March 29 where he reportedly stole $7,184, according to court records. Powers was linked to that hold-up by fingerprints on a counter. Other alleged hold-ups occurred in Hillcrest, Mira Mesa and Mission Valley. Police arrested Powers May 12 at his El Cajon home, and he remains in the South Bay Detention Facility on $350,000 bail. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges in San Diego Superior Court.

UCSD offers info on newest La Jolla project The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) office of plan-

ning and research released its completed draft mitigated negative declaration (DMND), adding additional research facilities to the School of Medicine, including laboratories and a vivarium on June `18. “The building would include wet bench research and support space for growth in the biomedical research programs,” UCSD said in a press release. “The new building would incorporate faculty from several departments and schools, including medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, ophthalmology, neurosciences, and cellular and molecular medicine.” University representatives said the new four- to five-story rectangular-shaped laboratory building will include a basement level, a tunnel leading to the school’s pharmacy building and a “basement level and a five- to sevenstory office component.” Officials reported the basement would hold an additional vivarium simulating natural habitats, allowing researchers to observe animals and plants in their own environments. A tunnel at the south would connect to the pharmacy building, which holds an existing vivarium, officials said. According to planning officials, planners designed upper floors to hold laboratories and laboratory support, in addition to office and research facilities at both ends of the building on each floor. “It has been determined that the project will not have a significant effect on the environment that has not already been examined in the 2004 long range development plan, Environmental Impact Report…,” officials SEE NEWS BRIEFS, Page 10

Beaches brim but holiday trash, arrests drop over July 4 BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS

City officials estimated that more than 1.2 million people flocked to the beaches over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, about 300,000 more than in 2008. Despite the increase in people celebrating Independence Day on the sand, the amount of trash and number of arrests and rescues were down this year. On area beaches, misdemeanor alcohol citations doubled from last year. A total of 210 citations were handed out. Although alcohol citations were up, no misdemeanor arrests were made on the beaches. Thirteen felony arrests were made, seven fewer than last year. “We believe it’s a lot more family-friendly environment and a lot more families,” said Capt. Shelley Zimmerman of the Northern Division. “Those that drew attention to themselves drew attention to themselves in a very family-friendly environment.” There was one DUI checkpoint over the weekend on Friday, July 3 at 2700 Garnet Ave. at which 13 arrests were made. Zimmerman said police also held saturation patrols throughout the weekend. In the water, lifeguards made a total of 262 rescues on the beaches of San Diego, 72 fewer than in 2008. Herbert Klein, former Nixon aide, editor, dies Herbert G. Klein, former aide to President Nixon, community activist and onetime editor-in-chief of the former San Diego Union newspaper, died Thursday, July 2 after a battle with pneumonia. He was 91. Klein, a La Jolla resident at the time of his death, was White House director of communications during the Watergate scandal, which forced Nixon to leave office in 1974. Klein resigned the post in July of 1973. He had been associated with Nixon since 1946, when Nixon launched a California congressional bid. In 1960, he helped spearhead the first televised presidential debates between Nixon and then Sen. John Kennedy. A Los Angeles native, Klein earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1940 from USC, where he met his wife Marjorie. Marjorie died in 2008.

Klein was a Navy public affairs officer in San Diego for three years during World War II, after which he became a special correspondent for Herbert Klein the San Diegobased Copley Newspapers. He later wrote for Copley’s Evening Tribune and San Diego Union. In 1959, he was named editor of The Union. He was Nixon’s press secretary during Nixon’s failed bids for the presidency and California’s governorship. He became Nixon’s communications director in 1968, the year Nixon won the White House. In July of 1973, amid the Watergate break-in scandal, Klein joined Metromedia Inc., a national broadcast group. He rejoined Copley as editor-in-chief in 1980.

An avid football fan, Klein attended more than 35 Super Bowls in his lifetime, including the first one in 1967. He was a member of a committee that brought the Super Bowl to San Diego in 1988, 1998 and 2003. He had a leading position in creating San Diego’s Holiday Bowl, the staple annual post-season college football tilt. Klein was a member of the San Diego International Sports Council and San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. boards. He was also on the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce executive committee. Klein is survived by a brother, Kenneth; his daughter Patricia Root, three grandsons and two great-grandsons. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 14 aboard the USS Midway. ■

a fight break out in front of the location and attempted to break it up. Upon doing so, he was stabbed twice in the torso and once in the left forearm, resulting in non-lifethreatening injuries, and was taken to the hospital. Police arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect. The Monday after the holiday weekend, Surfrider Foundation held its sixth annual Morning After Mess Cleanup Day at Ocean Beach Pier, Belmont Park in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach Drive in Pacific Beach. Early in the morning, 650 volunteers picked up 2,000 pounds of trash and 24,000 cigarette butts — in total, less trash than last year. “I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the beach this morning and saw the limited mess that was left behind, compared to some years in the past,” said Bill Hickman, a coordinator for Surfrider’s San Diego chapter. “There was still plenty of work for the volunteers but they were focusing on smaller items than usual.” Unusual items found in the

cleanup included a bra, a car tire and rim, a broken barbecue in some Mission Beach bushes and more than a handful of marshmallows in Ocean Beach. Hickman said he believes there were many factors behind the decrease in trash. “There’s more general awareness about keeping the beach clean and I think part of it was the alcohol ban as well,” Hickman said. “There weren’t any beer cans or anything like that out there. There’s still a lot of single-use stuff out there.” For the fifth year, Clean Beach Coalition put out 72 large cardboard boxes to collect trash and, for the second time, set out 62 cardboard boxes to collect recyclables through Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach and around Mission Bay to supplement city trash cans. The coalition paid for the boxes and the city maintained them from Thursday through Sunday plus was able to move underutilized boxes to more populous sites if required. Local businesses also sponsored the trash boxes, including Mi Casa, Firehouse Eatery, Lahaina Beach House and Sempra Energy. “People are now starting to expect the boxes,” said Robert Rynearson, director of Free PB, a local activist group. The coalition, which includes San Diego Coastkeeper, I Love A Clean San Diego, FreePB.Org and Surfrider Foundation, has supplemented trash pick-up for the past five years. ■

Parker lived in Tierrasanta with his wife and children, Collins said. In addition to a Tierrasanta attack, police connected him to two Carmel Valley and Mission Valley assaults, one in the college area and at UCSD, Collins said. Beginning in June 2008, Parker allegedly began targeting Asian women, either robbing and raping or solely robbing the women, according to San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Det. Jim Collins. “In each one of his cases, he demanded cash and restrained them using cable ties or zip ties,” Collins said. The 39-year-old suspect targeted Asian females returning home from shopping. He reportedly entered through the victim’s garage, according to police, demanding money and then sexually attacking the women. But his suspected spree ended July 1, police said, when his latest victim fought back. The woman shopper drove into the garage of her Mission Valley

The suspect started to close the garage door… and the victim began to fight with the suspect,” police said. Neighbors told police they heard the woman cry for help and called 911. “The suspect ran out of the condominium complex with the victim chasing him,” police said. “The victim flagged down other residents who were driving in the area and they joined her in the chase.” Bystanders joined the chase across Friars Road at Fenton Parkway, police said. Two off-duty Border Patrol agents spotted the group, chasing and eventually arresting Parker, police reported. “[The first] Border Patrol agent chased the suspect on foot, identified himself as a federal agent and took the suspect into custody, without incident. A second off-duty Border Patrol agent observed the incident and assisted the first agent until police officers arrived,” police said. Police arrested Parker — a Cau-

casian, 5-foot-8-inch, 165-pound Tierrasanta man — and booked him into county jail on suspicion of burglary, robbery, assault with intent to commit rape and false imprisonment. Police said DNA linked him to three assaults, including the November 2008 UCSD Mesa Housing attack, while additional evidence tied Parker to the remaining four assaults. Police found Parker “hung by the neck with a sheet in his cell” July 3 at 7 a.m. According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, Parker committed suicide. Though police said they solved one string of sexual assaults, another series continues. A man continues to grope women throughout the La Jolla and University City areas, then running away. In a previous interview, UCSDPD Detective Melissa Collins said women could register for self-defense classes. For more information about selfdefense classes, visit www.police. ucsd.edu. Dillinger charismatic but not dangerous BY JAMES COLT HARRISON | VILLAGE NEWS

The one thing that strikes the viewer about “Public Enemies” from Universal Pictures is that Johnny Depp plays gangster John Dillinger as a cool and attractive young man who is catnip to the ladies. Although the real Dillinger was a bank robber and a vicious criminal who spent nine years in prison in 1933 when he engineered a prison escape of all his cohorts, Depp doesn’t seem to play him as a dangerous man. He emphasizes Dillinger’s romantic and mythical reputation with the ladies, especially hatcheck girl Billie (Oscar winner Marion Cotillard). Let it be known Dillinger does take part in several bank robberies in which many people are machine-gunned, but the violence is not over the top or gory to the extreme. The action scenes are just that, and revitalize what turns out a rather languid film overall. Having grown up on the real Warner Bros. gangster films of the 1930s, this reviewer feels “Public Enemies” is a more stylish look at the bad guys from the Depression years. Warner’s films were dark and gritty and unglamorous. They were hard-hitting in style and in glorious black and white. “Public Enemies” is beautifully photographed by Dante Spinotti in the new HD process rather than on film. That lifts the gangster film to a new level of charm and prettiness not apparent in the Warners films. Is Depp up to being a mean,

to nail Dillinger. A heavier Billy Crudup plays Hoover as a young and attractive man, long before Hoover turned into a bulldog. Cotillard has a thankless role in which all she has to do is giggle a few times, look pretty and roll in the hay with Depp (an easy task). After her brilliant turn as French singer Edith Piaf and winning the Best Actress Oscar last year, she obviously did this picture to make some easy money. But she’s lovely so we can forgive her. ARTSbriefs Minsarah Trio next on summer jazz menu German pianist Florian Weber, Israeli drummer Ziv Ravitz and San Diego-based bassist Jeff Denson are each accomplished, award-winning musicians. Together, they are the Minsarah Trio, which perform at the Athenaeum next Thursday as part of the Farrell Family Jazz summer series. Minsarah’s self-titled 2006 CD, according to one critic, was infused with “fanciful energy” and “eccentric charm mixed with musical intelligence.” The trio’s 2008 collaboration with alto saxophone legend Lee Konitz demonstrates a dedication to sophisticated jazz improvisation. Minsarah is Hebrew for prism, “translucent glass or crystal used to form a spectrum

of light separated according to colors.” The prism’s cross-section is usually triangular — befitting three musicians who contribute compositions and share equal leadership in the trio. United Methodist Church presents Summer Pops The La Jolla United Methodist Church Chancel Choir will present its 29th annual Summer Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 10. This longstanding event is looked forward to by performers and community alike. The “Pops” tradition began 29 years ago as part of an annual Summer Wednesday Nights Family series. The performance was moved to Fridays to stimulate more community interest. Past programs have included many different themes, from the Beatles to Broadway. Every show has prompted a standing ovation, and we expect this year’s tribute to our country, “Celebrate America,” to do the same. This theme for 2009 — “Celebrate America: A Musical Appreciation of Our Nation Under God” — is being organized and directed by the choir’s director of music, Dr. Myron Tweed. Former organist and composer-in-residence Mark Dorian will be returning to perform and accompany the choir. Guest artists from the community will join soloists and instrumentalists from the choir to delight and entertain. As popular as the concert is the ice cream social immediately following the performance. You can’t beat the entertainment or the price — admission is free! Childcare is available by calling the church office no later than 48 hours in advance. An additional feature this year is that the concert will be emceed by the congregation’s new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Walter Dilg. And there will be a surprise appearance by that American icon — well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we told you! Come join us for this annual treat of toe-tapping, sing-along favorites and delicious ice cream with all the “fixings.” La Jolla United Methodist Church is located at 6063 La Jolla Blvd. For information or to reserve childcare, call (858) 454-7108. ■

Grinels brings ‘Little Words’ and other songs for acoustic evening BY BART MENDOZA | VILLAGE NEWS

On the road touring for the past two years, San Diegan Jenn Grinels almost feels like she has two homes. Having looped the country twice in 24 months, with extended stays on the East Coast, she now considers New York a second base. “It’s just that when I travel all that way, I try to do as much as I possibly can, so the stays have been extended,” she explained. It has been a whirlwind two years for Grinels, who performs at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library Acoustic Music Series on Monday, July 13. While she has been a part-time musician for seven years, she has only been a full-time musician for those two years of touring. Indeed, her initial forays into the music world were in musical theater,

“This year’s theme is ‘Opportunity through Community,’” BRCC President Joe LaCava said in a press release. “Throughout the Taste of Bird Rock event, we will highlight merchants, neighbors and friends in our community who give good will and spread their service, love, time and resources to the organizations and causes they are most passionate about.” Bird Rock Elementary has partnered with Cesar Chavez Elementary School to donate funds raised from the event. “We know how much our own local school needs funding this year, and we also know that there are other schools in the district that are in desperate need of help, too,” said Taste of Bird Rock committee cochair Celia Sepulveda. Residents will taste fare from local restaurants as they stroll La Jolla Boulevard listening to music. This year, committee members will offer raffle tickets for ocean cruises around San Diego Bay. “We feel that in times of economic uncertainty, we can and should continue to reach out and give to those who need it most, and we would love to be inspired by those who are doing just that right here in our Bird Rock community,” LaCava said. Bird Rock merchants began selling Taste of Bird Rock tickets June 27 at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, La Jolla Mailbox and Bird Rock Surf. Tickets are $25 for non-BRCC members, $20 for BRCC members and $15 for kids ages 3 to 12. For more information, visit www.birdrock.org. including stints as Janis Joplin in local productions of “Beehive” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Her reason for giving up musical theater is succinct. “I just like playing my own music better,” she said with a laugh. Though she has many modern influences, including Fiona Apple, Ben Harper and Martin Sexton, Grinels considers there has been no one big catalyst for her love of music — it’s just always been a part of her. “I think a good percentage of little girls want to be singers when they grow up, and it just kind of worked out that I did,” she said. “It’s just that I’ve always wanted to do it and when I was encouraged, I never gave up the dream.” While Grinels has a backlog of material, she has only released one album, 2007’s “Little Words.” She hopes to correct that situation soon, now that she’ll be off the road for a few months. “Writing has always been cathartic for me. Inspirations? Horrible emotional situations,” she joked. Like many performers, her songs are like pages in a diary.

“Absolutely,” she concurred. “Everything comes out of my journals — the heartache and the joy. For me it’s the extremes, trying to figure out what I want to say to a person or trying to find clarity in what I’m going through at the time a song is written.” She cited some recent relationship trauma. “I finished a song and I was elated, because despite all the negativity in my life, I had written a good song,” she said. “That was what kept me going through a particular rough patch.” While the music business is in the doldrums, Grinels is actually finding touring to be getting easier

now that she has paid her dues. “When I decided to go into music full time, I spent 10-hour days researching venues and begging club bookers to take a chance on me. Those first gigs were really like auditions,” she said. “Now that I’ve got 35 states that I’ve performed in behind me, there are lots of places

around the country that I can play in whenever I pass through town.” She laughed at some of the misconceptions that friends have of life on the road. “They ask if it’s crazy on the road and if I stay out and party, but it’s always a ‘no.’ I have to drive home at night from these venues, so I can’t even accept free drinks that are offered, plus you have to wake up super early to get to the next place,” she said. Despite that, Grinels is more than pleased with both her career choice and its trajectory. “I love what I do,” she enthused. “People are always asking, ‘When are you going to hit it big?’ But in my mind, I’m just really happy that I’ve been able to do it for two years and am making a living and surviving. To me that’s pretty awesome.” Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum, with Jenn Grinels, takes place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, at The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St. All ages are welcome. Chargers summer public practices move to ‘Q’ BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS

OAR DEAL

VILLAGE NEWS | ANTHONY GENTILE

Point Lomans Joe Thaxton and Jason Perone are on pace to take their rowing skills to a new level. Both rowers are participating in the invitation-only USRowing Junior Men’s Sweep Development Camp in Pittsburgh through July 19.

It has been a tradition for many years. Like many other traditions, however, this one is also going by the wayside. The San Diego Chargers announced last week that their upcoming summer training camp will, for the most part, be closed to the public. According to the Chargers personnel, the team’s training camps, which have drawn as many as 25,000 fans at Chargers Park over the years, will be closed to the public this month and next due to a public safety issue. After having moved from UCSD earlier this decade, the team’s

summer camp has taken place at the Murphy Canyon facility in recent years. The Murphy Canyon site, however, was damaged earlier this year by a drainage pipe that burst, creating a 40-foot-deep, 30foot-wide sinkhole. While the team says the sinkhole has been filled, it also reports that there is no guarantee the ground along it or around it is safe to stand or walk on. “Training camp is a special time for our fans, and the decision to close camp this year was made very reluctantly,” said Jim Steeg, the Chargers’ COO. “We share the city’s goal of completing these critical repairs during the dry sum-

mer months so, in the end, we had no alternative but to take this step.” To allow fans to enjoy practices during the repairs, the Chargers will hold sessions on Aug. 5, 8 and 12 at Qualcomm Stadium that will be free and open to the public. “The unfortunate closing of our training camp means that the entire Chargers organization will work to find other ways to provide our fans with the chance to see the practices that they enjoy during training camp,” Steeg continued. According to the Chargers, the final clean-up of the site at Murphy Canyon may take a few more months. ■

Losing a loved one’s life to cancer is tragic for anyone. It is especially sad when the cancer patient has not even reached the prime of life. Such was the case when Brian Schultz, 27, lost his fight with cancer 15 years ago. To keep his memory alive, high school and college friends of Schultz got together to remember Schultz and raise funds to support the quest for a cure with the establishment of the Brian Schultz Memorial Foundation. When the Athenaeum holds 9 its patron dinner each year, the focus is on the olives, which have come to symbolize the dedication and monies donated over the years by the many members who hold the music and arts library close to their hearts. The olives are gracefully given and gratefully received, but this year there was another element: the quadruple order of the olive with Max and Melissa Elliott, Russell Duff (neither of whom like olives) and Sue Whitman, who is fine 7 with them. Also, it turned into a love fest of sorts when talk turned to the upcoming wedding of Erika and Fred’s daughter, Annina, to Barry Raspotnik at Carolyn YorstenWellcome’s home (she’s a recent bride herself), followed by a reception at the Athenaeum. More on that anon, with photos. Back to the patron dinner; there were many hearty laughs when Erika told what happened when the director of the Boston Ath, while staying at La V, asked a number of people how to get to this Ath and no one could tell him. Imagine! Get on the ball, guys. Also, according to Erika, the patron dinners had humble beginnings, with homemade foods and just a handful of members. Today, the list of elevated givers grows each year and the olive supply is constantly replenished.

Adelaide’s to close Fay Avenue store BY ALYSSA RAMOS | VILLAGE NEWS

In an effort to condense inventory and increase customer service, Adelaide’s has closed its second store at 7743 Fay Ave., moving goods and employees about a block over to the main floral shop at 7766 Girard Ave. “We were stretching our resources,” said Adelaide’s sales GENEVIEVE BALICKI manager Genevieve Balicki. “To ADELAIDE’S Adelaide’s, customer service is the most important thing. We decided a few weeks ago to move [everything] over here to Jolla floral specialty shop — give customers the best service.” which opened along a San Diego Adelaide’s Fay Avenue shop road in 1936 — uses real and silk held most of the store’s floral silk SEE ADELAIDE’S, Page 14 inventory, Balicki said. Maudlin owner creates design catalog BY ALYSSA RAMOS | VILLAGE NEWS

In addition to her work as an art dealer and interior designer who represents fabric companies and upholsters with fabric, Jennifer Van Galder Clark, owner of La Jolla’s Maudlin, 7456 Girard Ave., is creating a catalog showcasing her iron and wood lighting and drapery hardware designs. “I’m starting small. I’m creating a catalog as we speak,” said Clark, who was recently elected vice president of Promote La Jolla,

the village’s business improvement district board. Despite Clark’s heightened sense of business ethics and externals such as the downed economy, Maudlin seems to have expanded. Although Clark’s catalog will be available in-store, the business owner was wary of stepping on fellow La Jollans’ territories, announcing the launching of the lighting and drapery hardware catalog in showrooms in the south such as Atlanta and Houston – saying she was hesitant of an online presence.

Regarding the economy, Clark said she caters to customers’ needs, seeking more economical prices for materials. “We’re helping people by keeping material costs down. We’re finding less expensive fabrics to keep overall costs down,” Clark said. “People are wanting to justify [purchases]. They want to buy it once and keep it forever.” But the best deals, Clark said, are antiques. “Antiques are a lot less expenSEE CATALOG, Page 14

Annual event goes OverThe-Line in several ways BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS

Competitors and partygoers alike will hit the sand at Fiesta Island for two weekends starting July 11 and 12 for the World Championship Over-The-Line tournament. Approximately 55,000 people are expected to attend Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s (OMBAC) 56th annual tournament. “It’s a one-of-a-kind event,” said OMBAC member Sonny

Petersen. “The inventors of the game are actually the guys that put on the tournament. The original members of OMBAC are the ones that created the game.” Over-The-Line is a four-inning game of self-pitch baseball played with teams of three on a modified court. “The line” is 55 feet from the batter and the fair area beyond the line is 55 feet from foul line to foul line. Brooding anemones are fecund, not in a funk BY JUDITH LEA GARFIELD

The glossy, bright-orange droplet adhering to a giant kelp frond caught the corner of my eye. Moving in close, I determined it was the tiny brooding anemone Epiactis prolifera, which grows to no more than an inch across. The center of the oral (mouth) disk is marked with white lines that radiate outward until they meet a ring of tentacles. The thick pedal disk (area under the tentacles) and stubby column or stalk have similar striations but are fainter and more diffuse. In the same family as corals, the brooding or proliferating anemone is so called because progeny are raised from eggs deposited outside the parent’s body. I find brooding anemones latched onto plant and algal life, like that found in the rocky reefs and kelp bed off La Jolla Cove,

and on mats of algae that coat areas of sandy bottom in the La Jolla Shores submarine canyon. They aren’t strangers to tide pools or the beach, where they may be dumped unceremoniously onto the sand as hapless passengers of uprooted kelp strands. Out of water, they draw in their tentacles to stave off moisture loss, but the next incoming tide can’t arrive too soon for these fragile flower animals. Despite the risk of a beach stranding, attaching to something solid and (at least relatively) fixed remains the best defense against currents or wave action. In fact, once a brooding anemone finds a

place to put down stakes, it typically spends most of its life there or within close range. Not being a go-getter, it is fitting that the tentacles circling the anemone’s mouth contain stinging bodies (nematocysts), which are used to capture prey floating by, particularly small crustaceans. Once immobilized, the prey is taken into the mouth whole. Indigestible material and waste is excreted through the mouth. Even with its formidable arsenal of nematocysts, some sea slugs are immune to the anemone’s defenses. When a slug devours its prey, the undetonated packets of stinging cells are absorbed and saved as a rainy day defense. Brooding anemones may also succumb to some hungry sea stars and fish. Though vibrantly hued, a brooding anemone may be overlooked because of its diminutive scale, but its proliferating procliv-

As far as scoring, three hits in an inning equals a run, and each hit after that in a single inning equals a run. Home runs – hits that advance past the last fielder without being touched – clear the bases. “If you’ve never seen it, you should definitely come and check it out,” Petersen said. “It’s great to be able to see it and to see how it’s played.” The double-elimination tournament features 1,320 teams of three – 143 from outside California – competing in 10 different divisions. Games take place from 7:30 a.m. to dusk on July 11, 12, 18 and 19. “With the athletes it’s usually pretty serious, but overall it’s a pretty lighthearted atmosphere,” Petersen said. “Everybody’s out there enjoying themselves in the sun.” The City of San Diego has issued a special event permit to OMBAC for Over-The-Line, allowing for the consumption of alcohol in the playing courts area, reserved parking lot and RV parking lot. For those

that miss the days of being able to drink with their feet planted firmly in the sand, Over-The-Line is a rare opportunity to revisit the past. Over-The-Line serves as OMBAC’s main fund-raiser for the entire year. During the year, the non-profit organization runs amateur and youth sports programs and donates to local charities. The Softball VIP party at Stinky’s Oasis jumpstarts the tournament on July 10 from 3:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. The party will feature bands French Kiss Koma, The Steps, Vokab Kompany and Buckfast Superbee, along with food and a full bar. Admission to the party costs $15, which includes two drinks. For more information visit www.govavi.com. Free parking lots are located near the courts on Fiesta Island, but those arriving to the event after 10 a.m. are encouraged to use the free shuttle service. Buses will run from Belmont Park (pick-up is at the west end of the Bonita Cove parking lot) and the Linda Vista trolley station to Fiesta Island. A Message from Dr. Broomberg, Voted Best La Jolla Doctor for Three Consecutive Years I have been practicing Family Medicine for 40 years in South Africa and the United States. I began my practice in 1983 here in La Jolla, and it grew from a small intimate practice to a rather large one, now servicing over 3,600 active patients. Every year the pressure to see more people increases, leaving both the patient and the doctor dissatisfied. The dramatic changes in medicine, throughout the years, have made it exceedingly difficult to deliver a high level of personalized service. With this in mind, I am making some important changes in my practice that allow me to take care of my expanded patient base and offer new personalized wellness options and specialty services. Along with the continuation of general medicine, I am excited to announce the implementation of three categories of enhanced services into my practice.

HEALTH · BEAUTY · FASHION · FUN What is Accent Modification? One of the most difficult aspects of learning a new language is acquiring correct pronunciation and clarity of speech. Clear, articulate speech is critical when conducting business, negotiating, lecturing and participating in daily communication interactions. Successful accent modification or “reduction” is simply a way to improve your awareness of how you make sounds and will help you learn the sounds, rhythm and intonation necessary to optimize your pronunciation of standard American English. People pursue accent reduction because: • They feel others are having difficulty understanding them. • They lack confidence in speaking situations. • Their accented speech impairs understanding on the telephone. • They experience frustration when lecturing, negotiating or conducting business because listeners are distracted by their accent. Accent reduction is an achievable goal. With proper, individualized instruction and intense practice, new speech habits can be learned and you, too, can have clear and professional sounding speech.

hermaphroditic females (harbor both male and female gonads). Why no males? No one has the complete answer to date, but it can be said that with this arrangement, reproduction can occur between hermaphrodites, within a hermaphrodite or between a hermaphrodite and a female. Whatever the combo, it’s a win-win because after all is said, done and fertilized, every player in the brooding anemone population has the plumbing to birth its own brood. The brooder eggs journey from inside the parent to outside on the pedal disk via an exceptional migration. The eggs are first fertilized in the parent’s digestive cavity, then the anemone’s body expands and contracts to release a mixture of eggs and milky
