Mothers staying connected La Jolla’s savviest moms share how social media keeps them connected BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS On an uncharacteristically-gloomy July afternoon, four La Jolla moms huddle around a table at Pannikin Coffee & Tea on Girard Avenue, sipping from ceramic mugs and chatting like old friends. Though they could all be considered neighbors, the women met using online social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and “mommy blogs,” or at conventions and gatherings that promote such tools. While their stories vary, each declares that social media has helped connect her to the community and navigate the challenges of motherhood and family life. “I started blogging because my husband and I were living overseas, and I wanted a way to keep family updated without sending a million e-mails every day,” says Katie Dillon, mother to a 3-year-old daughter, founder of LaJollaMom.com and writer for the La Jolla Neighborhood Examiner. “Then it just grew from there.” Noël Ehlers started her blog, Bird Rock Fabrications, as an extension of her crafting hobby.

years, specializing in coastal La Jolla properties, and has two grown daughters. “I didn’t have social media while they were growing up,” she says. “But I knew my industry was changing, and I wanted to change with it. When I decided to get involved with Facebook and Twitter, my kids thought I was crazy.” A national study released by The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association last year showed that stay-at-home moms dominate social media compared to other average adults. “Women need that connection,” Hirsh says. “I would hazard to say that post-partum depression has decreased. Early motherhood is hard no matter where you are. With this network, you don’t have to be lonely.” As a mom to older children away at college and law school, Silverman didn’t have social media while raising her daughters. But she said it still helps her tackle the “empty nest” phase of motherhood by keeping in touch. SEE TWITTER, Page 2

Bike & Build cyclists end 70-day trek BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS A band of weary travelers will descend upon La Jolla Shores today to celebrate the conclusion of a 70-day bicycling pilgrimage across the country to promote affordable housing. The 32 riders, ages 18 to 25, are all college students or graduates from various walks of life who applied to work with the nonprofit organization Bike and Build last fall. Each prospective participant was required to raise $4,000 and pedal at least 500 miles prior to the trip. On May 16, the entourage departed from Nags Head, N.C., for a summer of rising at 5 a.m. and averaging 75 miles of cycling per day. A van followed the group at all times, carrying supplies to make meal and rest stops quick and easy. Today marks the final stop of their journey, and the travelers will bid one another farewell and disperse to their respective hometowns. Four days of the entire trip were allotted for respite — one in the Grand Canyon and the remainder in various cities scattered along the route. The journey also included 12 “build days,” which involved teaming up with local affordable housing organizations to work on construction sites and present information at town hall-style meetings. Since its inception in 2002, Bike and Build has contributed more than $2.3 million through more than 1,000 participants to fund affordable housing projects planned and executed by young adults. Through grants and donations, the group has promoted its cause in 47 states.

NEWS Human smuggling by sea is on the rise The arrest of 17 alleged illegal immigrants who were dropped off by boat near Black’s Beach on July 19 is only the latest in a growing trend of maritime smuggling incidents. Mark Endicott, San Diego Border Patrol agent, said that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency has foiled 586 similar illegal immigration attempts in fiscal year 2010 in San Diego alone, up from 400 arrests the year before. “Our speculation is that we’re gaining more operational control of the land border in San Diego, and because of that … smugglers are looking for more elaborate and even more dangerous means to smuggle human cargo,” Endicott said.
Monday’s incident involved 13 males and four females who apparently all reached shore by way of a panga boat, or Mexican fishing vessel, about 30 minutes after Coast Guard officials spotted the boat approaching La Jolla’s coastline. “In many cases, these boats are used and they’re overloaded, which makes them very dangerous,” Endicott said. Most smuggling attempts are conducted by highly-organized groups who charge a substantial sum to migrants, he added. Authorities have apprehended smugglers from Imperial Beach all the way to beaches and harbors in Orange County and Los Angeles “and all points
in between,” Endicott said. Most originate from Mexico and carry human cargol. Endicott speculated that boats travel so far north to avoid what they may perceive as heavier patrolling near the U.S.-Mexico border. — Jenna Frazier
accounts, as opposed to PR people,” she says. “That makes La Jolla unique, because the locals are really involved.” The women unanimously name Twitter as their online network of choice, with Facebook a close second and some lesser-known sites as runners-up. “I also like Four Square,” Ehlers pipes up. Suddenly, the table erupts with gasps. “I can’t believe we haven’t checked in!” Each woman retrieves a smart phone from her handbag and logs into foursquare.com, a location-tracking site that allows users to earn points and collect “badges” in exchange for visiting local businesses. Often, vendors offer incentives like freebies or discounts to users who “check in” frequently. “It’s a game, but it’s also a way to show support for local businesses,” Ehlers says. “You’re promoting your visit and adding insider tips.” Supporters of social media claim it opens up a whole new world of opportunities to connect, while critics say those connections are only imaginary. They add that users live in an increasingly iso-
lated fantasy world based on distractions and over-stimulus. “I meet more of the moms from school on Twitter than when I’m there in real life,” Ehlers notes. “Same with my neighbors. But it’s nice because we communicate online and then when we see each other in real life, we already have this history.” “Maybe you meet on Twitter, but then you become friends and suddenly Twitter is just an element of your friendship,” Hirsh adds. “I’ve gotten to know incredible, fun, talented women all over San Diego who I would not normally have met.” And what if social media were to suddenly evaporate, forcing neighbors to once again introduce themselves by knocking on doors with baskets of muffins? “We’d be fine,” Dillon says. “We would always find ways to connect.” The group nods in agreement. “I don’t think the old way of interacting is gone,” Hirsh says. “Social media and the online world just complement real life.”

“I know that if I want to get a quick response from my daughters, I have to text rather than call,” she says. “I’m so technologically-illiterate, but you have to get with it. You can’t be left behind.” Out of all four women, only Silverman’s husband uses Twitter. “And half the time, I manage his account for him,” she laughs. “My husband doesn’t get it either,” Dillon says. “But it’s an outlet. When I’m having a hard time putting my daughter to bed, I can step away for two seconds, look at Twitter and mentally recharge.” “It’s a way of sharing these struggles that we all go through,” Hirsh adds. As for the online community in La Jolla specifically: “It’s still pretty small, but it’s growing,” Dillon says. Ehlers adds that La Jolla’s tight-knit community could prove to be an asset to its online presence. “Lots of small business owners are actually behind these social networking

City may invite advertisers onto local beaches BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Potential plans to sell advertising space on public beaches have left a divided community in their wake, with some welcoming additional sources of revenue as the city’s budget woes worsen and some fearing that the move borders on desperation. Mayor Jerry Sanders’ Strategic Marketing and Advertising Plan stems from the city’s 1999 Corporate Sponsorship Program, and consists of acquiring one corporate sponsor for each of the city’s eight main lifeguard stations. Jenny Wolff, director of strategic partnerships for the city, said contracts would last five years and would each raise a projected $200,000 to $500,000 per year. San Diego Lifeguard Services Sgt. Ed Harris has worked as a guard for 22 years and is currently assigned to the La Jolla area. He clarified that he speaks solely on behalf of the 911 Teamsters representing the lifeguards. Harris said lifeguard services have suffered as a result of budget cuts and that the Teamsters fully support the mayor’s plan “and going even further” to secure additional revenue. “We understand the city’s in a budget crisis and we want to be part of the solution,” Harris said. “We’re not asking them to do anything unreasonable. We’ve come up with funding sources and we’ve asked that they take the revenue from those sources and put it back into the services.” The city employs about 80 full-time lifeguards and 180 seasonal lifeguards following a cut that eliminated 12 percent of the full-time staff, Harris said. All guards typically work 40-hour weeks, and Harris said that the department recently implemented a mandatory overtime policy. “We’re facing pretty drastic cuts and

Those spots are supplemented with seasonal guards who are not authorized to help with law enforcement or perform cliff and scuba rescues, he said. Harris said the Teamsters’ marketing ideas included finding corporate sponsors for vehicles, uniforms and surfboards, buoys, trash cans, the surf report hotline and even the 8,000 to 10,000 Band-Aids the lifeguards distribute annually. “We live here, we work here and we’re part of the beach community,” Harris said. “We certainly don’t want to see anything that isn’t done tastefully or doesn’t respect the beach. But we would rather have a little bit of signage or advertising than see somebody drown.” Harris added that the Teamsters are also lobbying for a program that would reimburse lifeguards for their training at Miramar College. “We have tons and tons of ideas that will generate money, but we can’t implement them or see any returns unless they are approved and the funds are allocated to us,” he said. “We want to make sure the public signs off on these ideas so we
can all see well-managed and well-maintained beaches.” Joe LaCava, president of the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA), said he plans to raise the issue at one of the group’s meetings around September. “I hope to have more information from the city so that we can understand specifically what they have in mind,” he said. Though LaCava acknowledged the city’s budget restrictions, he said the city should “explore a variety of ideas” rather than focusing on beach areas. “Protecting the parks and beaches from commercialization has long been a worthy goal by the city, the community and the Coastal Commission, so this effort has to tread carefully,” he said. Regents Road bridge is a project long past its time By DEBORAH KNIGHT The so-called “Regents Road bridge project” is a 50-year-old idea that has never been built for very good reasons: it is environmentally destructive, a poor traffic solution and hugely expensive. The city currently has no money to build this $37 million dollar bad idea. It’s time to let it go. When the road was first drawn as a line on the map across Rose Canyon it was 1959. Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. In the north city area of San Diego there was no UCSD, no I-805, no I-5, no University City. There were few roads and lots of open space where plants and animals thrived and people — kids and adults — had places to get out and enjoy nature. Those who moved into the first homes in south University City in the early 1960s watched the cows and horses that still lived in Rose Canyon. Kids played freely in the canyon: They swung from ropes tied to sycamore branches, floated down Rose Creek on inner tubes after rains and explored nature on their own as a part of growing up. What has happened since then has changed not just the landscape of San Diego, but the daily life of children and adults and reversed our priorities. Now, instead of few roads and lots of open space, we have almost nothing but roads, buildings and parking lots, and only the last remnants of natural areas. We have traded a world of nature for a world of concrete and cars. And today’s parents no longer feel it is safe to allow their children the freedom to go off and explore nature on their own. Kids spend a lot of screen time — and not much green time. What has happened to Rose Canyon in the last 50 years? In 1979, the city dedicated a large part of it as Rose Canyon Open Space Park Preserve. It was one of a wave of new open space parks, whose purpose was to protect environmentally important areas and provide opportunities for low-impact recreation and scenic enjoyment. In the 1990s, the city granted Rose Canyon another important and powerful layer of environmental protection: it included the canyon in the Multiple Species Conservation Program. This is a conservation plan, negotiated with federal and state agencies, to protect habitat for native plants and animals. Rose Canyon is a last remaining urban greenbelt that stretches across the city, surrounded by development. (For those unfamiliar with this part of Rose Canyon, the rail line runs through it when it makes the long jog inland north of SR-52.). It connects to the east to thousands of acres of open space at MCAS Miramar, and to the west to San Clemente Canyon (Marion Bear Memorial Park). Rose Canyon provides wildlife habitat and serves as an important wildlife corridor, through which animals can move in search of food, shelter and mates. Protecting Rose Canyon also helps protect the water quality of Mission Bay, as Rose Creek flows through the canyon and south to Mission Bay. People from across the city come to Rose Canyon to run, bike, hike, walk their dogs and enjoy nature.

The Regents Road bridge project would build a four lane high-speed road through the heart of Rose Canyon Open Space Park Preserve at its widest, most peaceful and most scenic area, the area most used by people. This is not just a bridge: almost half the distance of this project would be a cut-andfill road built by bulldozing a scenic hillside much used by wildlife and filling a wetland. Down in the canyon, the road would connect to a massive concrete bridge almost 100-feet-wide with eight large supports. The park would become a noisy, ugly, urbanized place, its essence destroyed by concrete, traffic, graffiti and trash. What is the alternate vision? We have something priceless in Rose Canyon Open Space Park Preserve: a last remaining swath of nature that is accessible to urban residents without driving for miles. Forty-five hundred students attend school within walking distance, and an increasing number come to the park for first-hand experiences in nature. Preserving this park will cost the city nothing: we already own it. All we have to do is not destroy it. If the city did actually build this road, no one will ever say 50 years from now: wow, cool, our traffic problems are solved. If, on the other hand, we preserve the park, people 50 years from now will look at its scenic vistas, listen to the birds and thank those who saved it. In the past 50 years, proposed roads throughout California have outlived their time and will never be built. During the 1960s and 1970s, residents battled to save Tecolote Canyon: they stopped a landfill, then a maintenance yard, then a four-lane road with housing developments. Finally, in 1977, the City Council dedicated it as Tecolote Canyon Natural Park — and no one misses that road. Those who support the Regents Road bridge project claim there is only one connection between north and south University City: Genesee Avenue. Actually, there are three connections: Genesee Avenue, I-805 and I-5, a total of 20 lanes, with four more planned for I-805. The community is only about 2.5 miles-wide: 24 north-south lanes ought to do it. State and federal agencies have made it clear the city would have a hard time getting the necessary environmental approvals for this project and encouraged the city not to pursue it. The city’s own traffic studies have shown it to be a poor traffic project. It has become a boondoggle, pushed for by contractors because they would make millions working on it. Friends of Rose Canyon brings hundreds of people a year into the park for first-hand nature experiences, including students, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the general public. Bridge would not solve traffic problem The guest commentary advocating the Regents Road bridge made a few points, but not enough to justify what a proposed bridge will cost in terms of money and increased traffic jams in new areas. Another ingress/egress route between north and south University City sounds like it could theoretically be helpful. A bridge on 40-year-old master plans for Regents Road seemed like a solution, but it wouldn’t alleviate complaints of gridlocked residents living east of Genesee, which will persist after an expensive bridge is built. Regents Road would now empty northbound contents into Genesee east of Interstate 5, adding to congestion. Southbound traffic on Regents Road would head for either Route 52 or Governor, creating previously unprecedented and intensified traffic in a residential area that was once quiet. Neither direction of traffic at any time of the day will aid impacted east UC residents, some of whom are the most vocal bridge supporters. Traffic associated with three schools immediately surrounding the Genesee/Governor area, (Standley Middle, Curie Elementary and UCHS) won’t be lessened by this alleged bridge “panacea.” A new bridge’s existence won’t influence nor direct traffic to or away from this triangular school zone, a congested area twice daily during the school year. Congestion that occurs between Genesee, Governor, Nobel and I805 won’t be abated. The bridge once again is pointed in the wrong direction to ease gridlock in east UC neighborhoods. Gridlock shall continue, according to city planners with no “axe to grind.” However, this $34 million plus environmental impact report (EIR) study and construction project will succeed in making a reasonably quiet neighborhood around Regents Road and Governor Drive as busy as the Genesee/Governor road currently is. FBA funds con-
sidered for the bridge could be applied to other projects which the entire community could support. When one considers what a bridge would do to environmental concerns and the creation of traffic snarls where they presently do not exist, spending money on this bridge is unjustified. As for proposed trolley lines linking up in north or south UC, your author obviously doesn’t ride in existing trolleys. These are virtually empty. A romance between Californians and their cars on glutted highways is not cooling off with the prospect of trolleys. Will a Regents Road bridge help? A little. However, its cost prevents other projects, which the community agrees on, from being started. An expenditure of this magnitude will not benefit enough UC residents to justify an EIR or starting construction on it.

Obsolete project The Regents Road bridge is an obsolete project which would provide poor congestion relief for Genesee Avenue, would draw freeway trips from Interstate 5 through the University City community and would cause irreparable harm to Rose Canyon Park, one of the only public parks remaining in the area. The project was included, along with the Genesee Avenue widening, in the 1987 University Community Plan. At that time, the city projected that by 2005 there would be 70,000 average daily trips (ADT) on Genesee Avenue through south University City. In 2006, the measured traffic volume was below 34,000 ADT. The projections were off by more than 100 percent. The most recent projections, from the 2004 EIR, are for 42,000 ADT by year 2030. But records from the city’s own machine count tables show that Genesee Avenue traffic has hardly changed for decades and is now at its lowest level (28,700 ADT) in 23 years. Nevertheless, Genesee, like many

roads, does experience some peakhour congestion. The sources are the big trip generators in north UC: the Executive Office area, UTC, Costa Verde, etc. All these lie on or east of Genesee, and the demand is for trips to and from the South/Southeast. (La Jolla Village Square has immediate access to I5.) This is why numerous traffic studies, dating back to 1994, have shown the Regents Road bridge to be a poor congestion reliever for Genesee. The Genesee Avenue widening project, on the other hand, would provide the capacity where it is needed: on Genesee. (It is also about $10 million less costly.) The EIR’s traffic study found that relevant segment levels of service on Genesee would be D, E and F (with E and F deemed “unacceptable”) with the bridge, while the widening would result in service levels all C. As for the crucial Genesee Ave./Governor Drive intersection, the study found it to be a tossup, with the bridge doing better during a.m. peak and the widening better during p.m. peak. Unsurprisingly, the study found that the best way to clear this intersection would be to create an underpass there, since the overwhelming preponderance of peak hour traffic (80 percent during a.m., 70 percent during p.m.) proceeds straight through. Genesee is congested because it is used as an alternate to the chronically-congested Interstate 805 (northbound during a.m., southbound during p.m.). The best medicine for Genesee will be the planned widening of I-805. The most pressing needs in the area at the moment are for neither the bridge nor the widening, but rather for additional fire stations, and for improving flow and access at the Genesee / I-5 interchange. The bridge is a costly boondoggle that is, appropriately, now being priced out of existence.

The La Jolla YMCA gymnastics team capped off a stellar season in style with a first-place showing at the TeamGym Nationals June 25-27. “It was very exciting,” head coach Kristi Gorney said of the moment her team realized its accomplishment. “We all started to cry, the kids all started to cry, the coaches all started to cry.” The local YMCA sent three teams to Indianapolis for the national meet. Those squads competed against other teams in their respective levels from all over the country. It was the Level 4 team, La Jolla Gold, that took home top honors. Members of the Gold include Caitlin Sanders, Natasha House, Savannah, Lawson, Yaam Gonen, Kai Movellan, Emily Perlman, Hailey Berry and Emily Veliz. The trip to Indiana was a tremendous success for all the La Jolla teams, with a second-place finish by Level 6 and a strong performance by Level 5 to go along with the championship. Team gymnastics performances are a little different than what most people are used to seeing on television during the Olympics. Each squad consists of roughly eight members who perform an ensemble floor routine, as well as a jump event. Teams are judged as a whole, so depth of quality is much more important than any individual’s performance. Levels are in ascending order and are based on skill — not age — making Level 5 more skilled than Level 4, for example. La Jolla competitors ranged from 8 years old up to 17. Just making the team

was no easy task, as tryouts were needed to whittle down the numbers to a manageable size. “A lot of our kids in our program aspire to be on the team someday,” Gorney said. “We have about 800 kids.” The YMCA team also took part in the Gymnastics for All Challenge in Indianapolis. For their exceptional performance of “Rama Lama” they were
awarded gold. Although it’s made up of mostly girls, the sport is officially co-ed and La Jolla had two boys participating at nationals. The future looks bright for YMCA team gymnastics. With little fanfare and many devotees, the 12-year-old Athenaeum Music and Arts Library’s annual composer-centered, mini-festival of music has begun. As it has since its 1999 inception, the July summer festival has featured Mexican-American pianist Gustavo Romero, who was born in San Diego and raised in Chula Vista. He made his first public appearance at the Athenaeum, studied with the late Ilana Mysior and was packed off to Juilliard School of Music when he was still in his teens, supported by local music patrons. Following his graduation from Juilliard in 1983, he received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Six years later, he was the recipient of the first prize in the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland. Currently, he is professor of piano at the University of North Texas and plays in recitals and concerts worldwide. In honor of Frederic Chopin’s bicentennial, Romero plays Chopin in the Athenaeum’s 2010 Summer Festival, heard by La Jolla Village News Sunday, July 18, played to a capacity audience at the Neurosciences Institute. As always, Romero projects serenity as he takes the stage attired in customary black trousers and casual shirt. In the Neurosciences’ excellent, lively acoustics, his playing is an entire

Liquid Nation Ball to rock local seaside residence BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Fernando Aguerre, an Argentine native and a La Jolla resident since 1984, doesn’t much fancy stiff-collared affairs. The surfing aficionado and co-founder of footwear brand Reef will host the seventh annual Liquid Nation Ball, what he calls a “laid-back, classy coastal evening” on Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. to benefit 13 surf-related humanitarian organizations. Each year since 2004, Aguerre has welcomed professional surfers and celebrities, business moguls, philanthropists and members of the public to his oceanfront La Jolla estate — which just so happens to house one of the world’s most respected private surfboard collections. “My collection includes around 140 boards, some of which are currently on display at the La Jolla Historical Society’s Wave Riders exhibition,” Aguerre said. “There are boards from late 19th-century Hawaii to ones ridden by Kelly
Slater and other current champions.” Patrons of the star-studded event will enjoy dancing and live music, catered cuisine, an open bar and a live auction. “The appeal of the Liquid Nation Ball is that it isn’t like being in a hotel or a formal setting,” he said. “It’s a home.” Featured auction items include surf packages, unique boards, art pieces, and dinner and a Lakers game with basketball legend Bill Walton, including a meet-and-greet with players. “These are things you cannot really buy,” Aguerre said. Attire can include “everything from aloha shirts to sports jackets,” Aguerre said. “It’s a very cool environment, not too stiff or formal.” Aguerre holds true to his word by auctioning off his own outfit at the evening’s end, which last year consisted of tiger-print pants and a French velvet shirt. “I walk out on stage, and I leave my clothing there,”

he said. “It’s a very enjoyable tradition.” The first Liquid Nation Ball started with Aguerre’s brother, Santiago, to benefit the humanitarian organization SurfAid and “as a way to bring industry people together to raise funds for worthy causes,” Aguerre said. In 2006, the brothers handed over the event to the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Humanitarian Fund, and it became the main fundraiser for surf-related humanitarian causes. Since its inception, the ball has donated more than $1.25 million to various organizations. SIMA directors hope to raise $250,000 at this year’s event. As for his favorite local surf spots: “I don’t want to tell because my friends will get mad at me. People will find out and it will get crowded,” he laughed. The Peter Lik Photographic Gallery, 1205 Prospect St., is an amazing place that is worth a visit. In addition to the large vividly-colorful panoramic landscape photographs that adorn the walls, the interior design of the gallery is firstrate and sets the stage for comfort in viewing and contemplation. Visitors walk through either of two glass double-doors and enter the world of a modern primitive or anthropological museum. A full-sized stone Hindu sculpture of a god greets on the right. The fine wood flooring is striped in beige and dark brown like the camouflage of an animal of the forest. There are numerous fine leather chairs and sofas with heavy hardwood finishing to sink into. Large upright hollowed-out logs and lamps looking like campfires are set in corners. Everywhere there is attention to detail and atmosphere. The best thing of all are the backrooms with sliding doors which are like dimly-lit caves or caverns where you can sit in supreme comfort and look at photos on the wall or read one of Peter Lik’s four photography books. The walls of the gallery are covered with large prints, creating a dance of light and color. There are clear baby blue and green waters of the sea, trees ablaze with the red leaves of fall, ancient caves, sunlight through birch trees on snow, volcanoes erupting, vistas from ancient cave sites, twisted rock formations of the southwest, sunsets on the rocky shores of the northwest coast, rolling fields of lavender, and quaint roads through Appalachian woods. Peter Lik, the most decorated photographer in the world, with the title of master
of photography, was born in Melbourne, Australia. He began photography at an early age, taking his camera with him on family outings to the outback. It is astonishing, but he is completely self-taught. His first picture was of the dew on a spider web. The turning point in Peter’s life came when he was in Alaska. A fellow photographer introduced him to wide-angle large- format photography and whispered to him, “Go big or go home.” Peter listened. He sold his van and bought the type of camera he needed, went back to Australia and got to work. Peter’s vision and passion for photography paid off. He opened his first gallery in Cairns, Australia and now has 14 galleries all around the world. He has written four books on photography and won more than 30 awards from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. His photographs have garnered huge sums at Sotheby’s auctions. His more famous collectors include The Rolling Stones, Celine Dion, Magic Johnson, Justin Timberlake, Bill Clinton and George Bush. His latest accolade — he is going to be on TV, starring in an NBC action-adventure reality series. One of his books is titled “Australia: Images of a Timeless Land,” of which he says, “I searched for the essence of Australia ... in an elusive quest to capture the secret of that great land through the lens of a camera.” For “Spirit of America” he traveled around the U.S. for five years, visiting every state, logging some 50,000 miles and shooting 1,000 rolls of film. He recalls, “I’d walk into a lab and drop a bag with 200 rolls on the counter and have absolutely no idea what I was going to get.”

I will wait hours on end for the right light or return multiple times for the right shot. It is a never ending quest for the perfect image,” he states. Lik uses a medium format Linhof 6 by 17 camera. Linhof is an excellent German camera that has been made in the city of Munich since 1887. They start at around $8,000 but this camera seems to have an important influence on the quality of his photographs. Lik is an incredible photographer, adventurer, nature lover, businessman and a true artist and spokesman for the beauty of nature. A sweet French tart and a barroom brawl gala. This year, proceeds benefit the Hall of Champions, the Old Globe and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. The theme was “Rendezvous in Paris.” A red carpet led the 320 guests into the Jardin des Tuileries, which — in this incarnation — surrounded the Bea Evenson Fountain at the Prado’s east end. The tricolor flew overhead, matched by the cloths on the cocktail and silent auction tables. They were escorted to their dinner tables by uniformed French maids. More of Strauss’ fine cuisine followed, beginning with platters of fruits de mer, including shrimp, oysters, mussels and crab claws. Served along with this first course was a successful live auction by Bill Menish that ignited several lucrative bidding wars. Successive courses of tender osso bucco and bombe au chocolate et caramel rounded out the dinner, and appropriate wines accompanied the meal. (The French, of course, wouldn’t have it any other way.) Obba Babatundé, the Old Globe’s 2009 world premiere musical “Sammy,” entertained in an after-dinner cabaret titled “Sammy Davis, Jr. in Paris.” Quite a few partygoers still had plenty of energy to continue the evening in the Moulin Rouge nightclub (ensconced in the Natural History Museum’s grand atrium). Chuck Wansley’s After Hours Band played for dancing, and guests crowded in to enjoy the music, as well as truffe chocolate and digestifs. A previous engagement in Washington meant the U.S. Ambassadors from France couldn’t attend, and PoP president Jeri Rovsek wasn’t there either. She’d tripped over the family dog the day before and was confined to a wheelchair at home. Her husband, Richard, promised to tell her what a great time she missed. ••• The historic Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant in San Diego’s Old Town, shuttered for decades, recently underwent a $7 million restoration back to its 1870s grandeur. It re-opened with a benefit gala for Meals-on-Wheels of San Diego County. Nights in the 10 guest rooms (with full period furnishings and fixtures) had been auctioned, and hundreds of partygoers came to step back into history, sample the fare, play a little poker or faro, and celebrate Meals-onWheels’s 50th anniversary. Stagecoach rides, saloon girls, a gunfight and a barroom brawl added to the action. Mealson-Wheels distributes about 400,000 meals annually throughout the county. Patrons of the Prado: 1.
