Neighbors, board members at odds on route of Riford Center’s reconstruction BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS Two years ago, Friends of the Riford Center were informed as the lessee of the city-owned Riford Center that the building did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a law passed in 1990 that prohibits discrimination based on disability. The act defines certain guidelines for accessibility to buildings — one of which requires that an access route into a building from the public street or sidewalk must “to the maximum extent feasible, coincide with the route for the general public,” according to ADA’s Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities (ADAAG). The feasibility of the route into the main entrance of the Riford Center is the source of debate for the Riford Center board and the Bonair Street Neighborhood Group, a collection of neighbors who oppose the board’s proposal for a 3-foot-wide side access entrance. Glen Rasmussen, Riford Center’s board chairman, said a front entrance access is simply not feasible due to time, budget and permitting constraints. “The property line is on the sidewalk,” he said. “We’d have to demolish the sidewalk, and the planned district ordinance (PDO) requires sidewalks to be 8 feet wide.” He said the neighborhood group got preliminary, discretionary permission from a city engineer that would allow

NEWSbrief Executives fish for a collective cause Fish. Food. Feel Good. (F3G), a unique nonprofit organization dedicated to feeding San Diegans in need, will hold its first “Fishing for Charities” fundraising event on Aug. 8. Executives from local charities, including Father Joe’s, San Diego Food Bank, San Diego Rescue Mission and greater San Diego Meals-on-Wheels, will board the Pacific Queen alongside Todd Bluechel, founder of F3G, for a one-anda-half day deep-sea fishing trip to collect fish for distribution to San Diegans in need. In its first year of operation last year, F3G collected over 27,000 pounds of unwanted yellowfin, yellowtail, bluefin and albacore from sports fishermen for distri-

bution to local charities. Full-time residents and students participating in Father Joe’s Culinary Arts Program filleted the fish, which was donated to local San Diego charities, including Father Joe’s Villages, Samoa Independent, San Diego Rescue Mission, San Diego Food Bank and the greater San Diego Meals-on-Wheels. Fisherman’s Processing also works in conjunction with F3G to collect, freeze and store the fish. A limited number of participants can also join the fishing expedition for $550 per person. The center’s board would like to construct a handicap-accessible ramp on the side of the building, right, to be built in conjunction with a new entrance on Bonair Street, a move being opposed by the Bonair Street Neighborhood Group. Earlier in his career, Rorrison patrolled with several members on the management team, including Capt. Al Guaderrama, who heads the Northern Divisin. Rorrison has also worked with the Northern Division’s team to supervise the Fourth of July holiday festivities along the coast during the last five years. “We’ve all worked together before, and we’re glad to be back together,” Rorrison said. “The plus is that I come into a new assignment, but I come in with people that I know. We have a police department family, but Northern Division is another family on its own.” Rorrison said the team members feed off of each others’ known skills and areas of expertise. “If somebody else has more of an understanding of a certain skill set than the other person, we’re not afraid to explore those options and take that input into our plans that we’re going forward with,” he said. Rorrison said he and his team at the Northern Division are focused on being accessible to the communities they serve, determining the distinct quality-of-life issues that are unique to each neighborhood and protecting public safety in all the neighborhoods through effective law enforcement. “We are trying to do a fresh approach as far as being accessible to the community, to improve their life and help them with any issues that they have,” Rorrison said. “Our main concern is public safety and law enforcement, but this division is unique in that we do deal with members of the communities on a regular basis.” Rorrison emphasized the importance of getting to know each community and its distinct concerns. He has already attended meetings of the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach town councils and the Bird Rock Community Council, and is scheduled to attend community meetings in La Jolla in the near future. “My calendar is full usually every week going to the different groups to meet with the people who are involved with these core issues that affect their community,” Rorrison said. “They get to see me and talk to me one-on-one.” The Northern Division covers a vast area, serving a population of 218,056 people spanning nearly 42 square miles. Within the division, there are 12 distinct neighborhoods, each with varied and everchanging concerns, priorities and needs from the SDPD. “It’s a new challenge in each different area,” he said. “Every place is unique in what they want and what they expect from the police department. We’re here to facilitate that and do what we can to provide the best service. “I love my job,” he said. “I love the community where I work. I love this place. It’s nice to come to work that you really enjoy.” To contact Rorrison, call (858) 552-1700, or visit www.sandiego.gov/police/neighborhood/northern .shtml. Our current proposal is “entirely within our property, does not impact city improvements and does not submit us to any uncertainties.” GLEN RASMUSSEN Chairman, Riford Center Board of Directors board plans to construct a 3-foot-wide, ADA-compliant door on Bonair Street, offset with landscaping. “We want to accommodate our neighbors as much as we reasonably can, and we have many times,” he said. “We’ve bent over backwards and we’ve considered every proposal. There’s just no way to satisfy this situation. They are entirely motivated by their desire not to have people on their side of the street. It’s for their own interest, not the community’s.” Don Goertz, the La Jolla architect who drafted the front ramp proposal, said a front-access entrance option is both feasible and preferable. “There are a lot of people with walkers going into that building. They don’t want to walk up the side of the building then up to the front,” Goertz said. The Bonair Street Neighborhood Group wrote a letter to the Riford Center board, detailing why its members object to a side entrance. “The front ramp meets the legal requirement for equal access for all persons — the side ramp does not. The side ramp discriminates against persons in wheelchairs, requiring them to traverse a further distance of more than 100 feet on an uphill sidewalk to reach the primary entrance from the main parking areas,” the letter stated. The written statement also outlined concerns about the degradation of the residential character of Bonair Street and the precedent for commercial creep on the residential street. Goertz argued that the board is solely concerned with improving aesthetics at the entrance of the building, not with the rights of persons with disabilities or Bonair Street residents. “Supposedly, they have a grant to make ADA accessibility and rehabilitation of the building,” he said. “All they’re doing is making the front entrance better.” Rasmussen countered Goertz’s claim, stating that all of the funds are related to access construction and “the most basic aesthetics you can imagine.” Rasmussen said he doesn’t believe a tremendous increase in pedestrian traffic will result from a 3-foot-wide side entrance and said he finds no credence in the neighborhood group’s claim that the entrance is non-compliant.

Residents satisfy their sweet tooth at the 2009 “Banana Split in the Park” celebration. The event has been held at Standley Park and Recreation Center for 30 years. PAUL HANSEN| Village News

The 30th anniversary of “Banana Split in the Park” on Saturday will feature the biggest banana split to date — 650 feet of bananas, ice cream and toppings. “This year, the Banana Split in the Park even is more that just a banana split. It is a banana split festival,” said Courtney Roberts, Standley Park and Recreation Center representative. The annual summer neighborhood activity held in Standley Park and Recreation Center will feature free live entertainment by the Bayou Brothers, a magic show and, of course, the chance to cool off from the summer heat with a colossal sweet treat. The milestone event will also feature a fun activity zone for kids, including a rock-climbing wall, jumpers, a bungee trampoline, face painting and crafts. The Swanson Pool will also be open for a quick cool-down dip from 4 to 7 p.m. Following the consumption of the enormous dessert, a free twilight showing of the animated film “Despicable Me” will take place as part of the countywide Summer Movies in the Park program. Thirty years ago, Standley Park director Steve Lyons decided to hold the first “Banana Split in the Park” at the newly dedicated cen-

ter after attending a similar event in Mission Viejo. Then-recreation council president Jorgan Heimburger offered to provide the ice cream to make the event a success. The tradition has not only lived on — it has culminated into an event that families, volunteers and coordinators look forward to every summer. Since “Banana Split in the Park” began in 1981, the sweet treat has ranged in size from 200 to 600 feet, and attendance has varied from 300 to 1,000 participants. This year, the record-breaking banana split is anticipated to attract 1,000 to 2,000 participants. “This event is not possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers and staff,” said Roberts. “We anticipate most of them returning for this big anniversary.” The dessert and movie event will take place at Standley Park and Recreation Center, located at 3585 Governor Drive, on Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bananas. Ice cream and toppings will be provided by sponsors, including the Standley Park Recreation Council, the Heimburger family and the University City Community Association. I know my parents have named me the person to take care of their affairs if they cannot do so. They really do not understand this enough to explain it to me. Can you help?

Question:

There are many tools that I use when I draft an estate plan. The easiest one to understand is the Advanced Healthcare Directive. This document is also called the healthcare power of attorney. This is used to talk to the doctors to make decisions for treatment if the person cannot do it for themselves.

Answer:

Power of Attorney for financial affairs can be used to make limited financial decisions for the parent. The document can be used to deal with the insurance, utilities and credit card companies and others that will not speak with you because you are not authorized to do so. The "big gun" is the Trust and the Trustee has the authority to deal with the Trust assets. If a bank account is in the name of the Trust and you are the current Trustee, you can access these funds to take care of your parent. Still have questions? Call me. I will need to actually see the documents to give you the proper advice.

In July, the La Jolla Parks and Beaches Committee passed an alternative resolution. A Graduation Tribute

My dear parents: You mean the world to me, always and forever. You have done everything for me, you are my rock, my foundation and my inspiration. I am grateful for the unconditional love you give to all four of us children. You have provided me with the gift of education which I think is one of the most important gifts a parent can give their children. Jim: You are an unbelievable human being. You set your goals and dreams high and wide beyond your assumed limitations. I idolize you. You have enlightened me in a way that no one else has. You tell me to set my goals high, make connections and be who I am and I’ll get to wherever I want to go in life. You are living proof of this and a true example for me. You’ve always encouraged the growth of my vernacular (minus the word "like") and the expansion of my physical horizons. You inspired me to want to experience and see for myself, the wonderful world. I want to "get away" and experience the wonders of the world. Live in a place that everyone warns me is "different". You’ve made this possible. I am ready. Mom: You are my best friend, and the best mother I could ever ask for. I think the strongest bond in this world is the one between a mother and daughter. Ours is especially strong. I feel so fortunate and thankful for the unique and special unconditional love we have for each other. You are a martyr. As a single parent, you fought for our education. As your daughter, I try to show my utmost appreciation and love for you 24/7. And though II make mistakes, my love and appreciation will never waver. To quote one of my favorite shakespeare poems (I'm such a nerd): "My love for you is an ever-fixed mark, that looks on tempests and is never shaken”. Know that whatever I do, I will always love you. Mom, I want the growth of our relationship and our respect for each other to grow. Let it run wild. I love you. I confess that my eyes are not exactly dry as I write this because I feel as if I'm saying good -bye. Graduation was my day my day to bask in the lime-light and I will never forget my parents are who helped me become what I am today. You planted, fertilized, watered, and tended to the plant, of which blossoms are celebrated on this day. Lost in the emotions of the day I wish to recognize you, my parents, the gardeners, the martyrs, who raised me. I appreciate and love you. Thank you. Your loving daughter. – Brianna

BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS On July 12, local scuba divers boarded the Humbolt, a 45-foot scuba-diving vessel donated by Waterhouse Charters in Mission Bay, and began a project to clean up hundreds of pounds of abandoned netting off the coast of the Coronado Islands. The underwater cleanup effort was organized by Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA), the only nonprofit marine conservation organization dedicated to the technical, yet dangerous, task of cleaning up “ghost gear”— abandoned lobster and crab pots, nets and lines. “If there is any commercial fishing that goes on, they typically lose 10 to 15 percent of their nets,” said ODA Founder and President Kurt Lieber. “Ghost netting is very difficult to see and people can get caught and drown in it, and because it’s hard to see, animals get stuck in it too.” Currently, the Coast Guard picks up ghost gear down to 50 feet underwater, due to its danger to recreational boats. Deeper below the surface, however, ghost gear — including now-illegal drift netting from the 1990s — remains entangled among reefs. The tangled nets can trap marine mammals, birds, and other sea creatures, potentially disrupting the ocean ecology. According to Lieber, fishing boats do not typically have scuba divers onboard, so when nets or gear get caught on something underwater, they are simply cut, abandoned and paid for by insurance companies.

Cleaning up a ‘dirty little secret’ in San Diego Bay “It’s a dumping ground in the ocean, and there’s no legal ramifications for it,” he said. “I’m working with some lawyers to get a bill passed to make insurance companies liable for that.” The ease of cutting nets, meanwhile, is not equal to the ease of retrieving the manmade litter. “It’s a long and tedious process,” he said, recalling one project involving a 1,400-pound net in only 80 feet of water that took months to complete due to harsh conditions. Since ODA’s establishment in 2002, Lieber and his team have cleaned up more than 12,000 pounds of abandoned netting in Southern California. “The only way we find these nets is if people report them to us,” he said. Although ODA is based out of Huntington Beach, Lieber urges San Diego divers who see any type of ghost gear to report it to ODA immediately. “There’s no one doing what we do,” he said. “We’re willing to come down here.” To report sightings of ghost gear or to donate to ODA, visit www.oceandefenders.org, email contact@oceandefenders.org or call Lieber at (714) 875-5881.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 6 p.m., San Diego Coastkeeper and the Environmental Health Coalition will host “Signs of the Tide: San Diego Bay’s Dirty Little Secret,” a free panel discussion on the origin of contaminated material lurking beneath the water in the San Diego Bay, its effect on marine and human life and the 10-year history of delayed cleanup efforts. In a 1996 study, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found San Diego Bay to be the second most toxic bay in the nation. Pollutants like copper, mercury, PAHs, PCBs, zinc and chlordane are dense in the sediment, contaminating fish and resulting in serious human health risks to consumers. A local environmental leader will discuss the scope of a proposed project by the Regional Water Quality Control Board to clean up the toxic material from a 60-acre site on the bay’s floor and a San Diego Coastkeeper staff member will propose ways for volunteers in the community to get involved in the cleanup efforts. “Signs of the Tide” will take place at the Memorial Recreation Center, located at 2902 Marcy Ave. For more information or to get involved, call (619) 758-7743 or visit www.sdcoastkeeper.org.

TAKING THE ART WORLD BY STORM BY KENDRA HARTMANN | VILLAGE NEWS Sarah Stieber is no stranger to the world of art. The 23-year-old La Jollan has immersed herself in artistic endeavors since she was a child — and the work is paying off. Stieber, a 2006 graduate of La Jolla High School, spent her childhood in art classes at the Athenaeum and the La Jolla Art Studio, where she developed a love of painting between the ages of 5 and 13. After high school, Stieber

went on to Boston University to study painting and psychology. During college, she spent time honing her craft in Venice, Italy — picking up where she had left off after studying the masters at the Uffizi Museum in Florence when she was a teenager. Stieber has since returned to her California home, and it is apparent her roots have influenced her work. Vibrant colors and warm, inviting scenes permeate her body of work. Stieber has made her reappearance on the West Coast successfully. The youngest member of the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park, she has had her work shown in a number of galleries, the most recent being Alexandar Salazar’s downtown space at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Broadway. Chosen as the gallery’s

“artist-in-residence” for the month of June, Stieber enjoyed her first solo art show there following the opening night exhibit on July 6. The show ran through the end of July. Stieber has also hung her work in the Cirello Gallery in North Park. Stieber has been selected as the featured artist for Effen Vodka’s “The Art of Design” party, taking place Aug. 4 at Alexander Salazar Fine Art, 740 Seventh Ave. For more information, visit www.sarahstieber.com.

Art Lawn 2011: A local artist’s hidden masterpieces revealed BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The La Jolla Historical Society will host Art Lawn 2011, a free fundraiser event and art show on the picturesque lawn of Wisteria Cottage. The show, featuring works by emerging local artist Mohan Sundaresan, 66, will showcase the resident’s once-hidden masterpieces. The Indian-born Sundaresan has lived in San Diego for 20 years, all the while building his own tools, etching aluminum metal scraps and using raw, hands-on painting approaches on canvas in his athome art studio. His studio — more like a creative construction site — is equipped with high-tech construction tools, including power saws, drills, an air compressor and scraps of metal, wood, plexiglass and particleboard. One thing that won’t be found in his studio? A paintbrush. Sundaresan, a self-taught painter, uses nothing more than his hands on hand-stretched canvas to create his works of abstract art in vibrant colors and patterns, often with a signature holographic orb hypnotically floating within the artwork. “His artwork is just incredible, but he just saved all of his work in his garage,” said Sundaresan’s friend and agent Steve Medoff. “He never sold anything and didn’t really exhibit his work.” Medoff first met Sundaresan when he moved into a new building where Sundaresan worked for the homeowners association. Upon seeing Sundaresan’s works stashed in his garage, Medoff, an art collector himself, was determined to help him get the collections on display.

The La Jolla Music Society’s annual celebration, SummerFest, rings in its 25th anniversary this year. Each year, the nationally-recognized chamber music festival brings more than 70 artists and ensembles to La Jolla for performances both outdoors at Scripps Park and in Sherwood Auditorium and St. James by the Sea. Director Cho-Liang Lin, responsible for selecting the talent, will also perform in several of the concerts. The festival, consisting of both free and paid performances, takes place between Aug. 5 and Aug. 26. For more information, visit www.ljms.org.

“His stuff is unbelievable,” Medoff said. “One of the amazing things about him is he builds his own easels. He built 20 easels for the show and he also does his own canvas matting and stretching.” After Medoff decided to dedicate his efforts to help Sundaresan by becoming the artist’s agent, he spoke with a representative from the La Jolla Historical Society about showcasing Sundaresan’s work on the society’s lawn. La Jolla Historical Society’s executive director John Bolthouse followed through with the idea. Bolthouse happens to know Sundaresan — but never knew he was an artist. “It was very generous of Mr. Sundaresan and his friends to offer this opportunity to present something so unique at the Society’s historic Wisteria Cottage,” said Bolthouse. Art Lawn 2011, Sundaresan’s first-ever solo show, will feature six tents with 100 pieces of his unique masterpieces on sale at affordable prices. “The Jewel is Setting,” an original canvas painting by Sundaresan, will be given away in a $5 raffle drawing to benefit the Society. Tickets are on sale from Aug. 4 to 7 at the La Jolla Historical Society, located at 7846 Eads Ave. The drawing will take place on Sunday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. The winner does not need to be present to win. The free event and art show will take place on Aug. 6 and 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wisteria Cottage, located at 780 Prospect St. For more information about the event, visit www.artlawn.info or email artlawn2011@gmail.com.

participated in sports but weren’t embarrassed about being girls. They define diva as “a confident, poised girl who knows what she wants and how to get it.” Riding the coattails of popular movies like “Blue Crush” and “Charlie’s Angels,” which inundated the big screen with images of female surfers, Surf Diva has expanded its surfing programs by acquiring La Jolla Surf Camp in 2003 and the Australian Surf Academy for teens in 2005. The sisters also started a program in Costa Rica called “Welcome to the Jungle.” “I really like their philosophy of women for women,” said Diane Colligan, who came from Tucson, Ariz. for the weekend surf clinic. “There was a wide variety of ages in our group and we were all treated the same, regardless of age. The instructors really covered the ocean well, drove safety home and were beside you the whole time. At the end of the day, you always felt like a success.” Izzy interviews, hires and trains the more than 60 surf instructors at Surf Diva. She runs surf schools in La Jolla and Costa Rica, and designs their own surf and SUP boards, as well as managing advertising, acquisitions and social media. Coco designs the Surf Diva clothing line and is the boutique’s buyer, and handles the company’s public relations, marketing, brand management, human resources and strategic partnerships. “I am stoked to work with Izzy and my husband,” said Coco, whose husband Carlos oversees the websites and equipment logistics at Surf Diva. “We have so many awesome employees including a bookkeeper we’ve had since

day one and instructors that started as students 14 years ago.” Both graduates of La Jolla High School and the University of California, San Diego, the twins grew up participating in water sports, including competitive swimming at the La Jolla YMCA and on the school swim team. Taught to surf by their father when they were eight years old at La Jolla Shores, they said they loved going to the beach every day after school and participating in surf competitions. Their parents are both active in water sports. But, they said, their mother never let them forget their feminine or “diva” side, as evidenced by traces of pink eyeliner, the company’s large pink tent on the beach and their reminder to students to bring hair ties to their surf lessons. Out of college, Coco was the fourth employee to join the Reef sandals company as the assistant national sales manager. At the time, Reef was still a small start-up, but she learned from the company’s founders, brothers Fernando and Santiago Aguerre, that with a lot of hard work, it’s possible to work alongside a sibling and sell a boatload of sandals. “We are lucky to be living and working in such a beautiful place,” they said. “La Jolla Shores to us means so many wonderful things that involve family outings and having fun with friends. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it was obvious that Surf Diva would be headquartered here.” Surf Diva boutique carries products made by other local companies, including Headhunter sunscreen/rash guard, Tonic Haircare, K&L Creations jewelry, Greenpacha surfboards and hats, and merchandise from Surf Monkey Fellowship. FASHION

Fashion and art collide in the Village BY DIANA CAVAGNARO | VILLAGE NEWS The second annual La Jolla Fashion Film Festival got under way on July 29 and 30 at the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla. All the fashion fans arrived for this most anticipated event, a “who’s who” for international directors and photographers. Anna Easteden, wearing an Eva Varro design for one of her five dress changes throughout the evening, was the mistress of ceremonies. Easteden recently filmed a pilot for NBC with Don Johnson. Each short film shown at the festival was a visionary feast to the eyes combining fashion and art. And the fashion had top billing: Prada, Armani, Christian Lacroix and Dior are some of the top name fashion designers that were used in the films. On the first night, the short film “Barefooting around the World” by Bruce Webber was a beautiful, feelgood film about what is important in life. One of the audience pleasers was “The Lady Noire Affair,” by Olivier Dahan, which replicated a 1940s mystery with great suspense. The film starred a Dior handbag playing alongside French actress Marion Cotillard, and John Galliano provided the art direction. The first evening finished up with Best Director-winner Marcus K. Jones showing his skill and versatility with three separate films. The second day began

with a seminar in which Mahal Style.com gave tips on how to interact and market around the world on Facebook. Robin Kay, president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada, also shared her knowledge during a seminar on the fashion industry and her experience as founder and director of LG Toronto Fashion Week. The second night boasted a stellar lineup of talent with films that included humor, drama, suspense and even a campy short film with a woman as a hit man. “Remember Now,” directed by Karl Lagerfeld, was an obvious crowd pleaser. As an added bonus, Lagerfeld makes a special appearance at the end of the film dressed from head to toe all in white. Performed in the Mandell Weiss Theatre, the play proved quite different from the classic tale. A father brings his beautiful daughter into a modern sleep disorder clinic, explaining that she’s overslept — by about 900 years. With the help of the incredulous clinic staffers, she begins to awaken — much to the exasperation of the patients being treated for insomnia, all of whom soon find themselves sharing a similar dream. For the rest of the twists and surprises, attend a performance — they run through Aug. 21. Post-performance, guests and cast continued the party with desserts, drinks, DJ dancing, and dramatic discourse. The writers hope their play helps us find a way to live truly awake in the world, and the Playhouse wants it to be an eye-opener for us all.

Don Breitenberg and Reena Horowitz have teamed up to bring a new Distinguished Speaker Series to La Jolla’s Riford Center. These two top-level volunteers began said series with La Jolla’s own Dr. Irwin Jacobs, who addressed a capacity crowd at the Riford on July 25. But there’s more to come. “There will be one about every month for quite a long time to go,” said Don. “We’ve got three locked up now; maybe four,” he added, naming San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders as next month’s speaker, followed in October by Rear Adm. William D. French, Navy Region Southwest commander. Others planned for the future include Walter Munk, Pam Slater-Price, Bill Walton, and possibly former Chargers star Junior Seau. This lineup of prominent speakers promises to bring the Riford

Center — already a popular nexus of activity in La Jolla — to the attention of an even wider circle of the area’s populace. The early-evening event cost nothing to attend. Underwriting came from Sandra Redman, senior V.P. at California Bank and Trust’s Private Banking Division; also from Linda Miller, V.P./senior private banker at City National Bank. Sami Ladeki’s Roppongi Catering provided very substantial hors d’oeuvres, and wines and other refreshments were served. Jacobs proved to be an excellent speaker. His 60-minute talk was informative and entertaining, precisely organized and delivered without a single stumble or hesitation, despite the complete absence of notes or other aids. He spoke of growing up in Bedford, Mass.; then studying hospitality management at Cornell (where he met his wife, Joan) before switching his major to electrical engineering and computer science. His master’s and doctorate degrees are from MIT, where he later held professorships. With Joan and their three kids in a used camper, the family visited the west coast on a three-week trip. California employment offers followed; he declined them to remain near family and friends in the east. But after Joan found them a beautiful house — which happened to be in La Jolla — he accepted a teaching position at UCSD. They re-packed the camper and moved west. He also related how he co-founded Linkabit, and later Qualcomm, whose code division multiple access technology is now one of the two most efficient and effective standards for cell phone communications (despite the fact that their first CDMA mobile phone was “[barely] small enough to fit in a van”). All this (and more) was told in an engaging and sometimes quite humorous style, after which Dr. Jacobs entertained numerous questions from the audience.

C O A S TA L DINING IN AND AROUND LA JOLLA Donovan’s Steak House They may look good enough to eat, but the paintings and sculptures at Donovan’s of La Jolla are strictly off limits – so you’ll have to content yourself with the USDA prime beef, the eatery’s star attraction. If steak isn’t in the plan, pork and veal chops and succulent seafood will satisfy the most discriminating of palates. And at Donovan’s, fresh seasonal vegetables and your choice of potato are always included with each entrée.

HISTORY

early life on La Jolla’s links

By Carol Olten

In the 1890s and onward into the turn of the 20th century, golf was fast becoming a popular and fashionable sport across the country. By 1900, there were more than a thousand golf clubs in the United States, a monthly magazine on golfing was common reading fare and, by 1909, William Howard Taft encouraged the fervor by becoming the first golfing president in the White House. Although La Jolla at the time was a small isolated seaside village at the edge of the country, it was not to be left out of the golfing scene. As early as 1899, the first links

were set out with a nine hole course beginning at Prospect and Cave streets continuing up across Torrey Pines Road and back again to the starting point. There was a sizeable turnout to try the game, including La Jolla chronicler Anson Mills, who recorded in his diaries that golf was “a remarkable game. Anyone has to try it once to become a victim to the habit.” In 1900, La Jolla organized its first golf club and enthusiasm for the game spread through the community. Soon, however, the building of more cottages and homes along the coast led to the demise of the course along Prospect Street. The golfers began to look to the hills further out of the village to establish a larger course with a green. This was the genesis of what became

the La Jolla Country Club and the magnificent manicured course we know today. Summer visitors to La Jolla looked forward in the early 1900s to playing the first nine-hole course on the hill on the western slope of Mt. Soledad. A Mr. Lawrence Brodribb of Colorado Springs, Colo., recalled, “Of course, it was all very rough, dirt greens, etc. In those days, we only used about four clubs. The balls were solid rubber and when they were damaged, we soaked them in lye to take off the paint, then boiled them and pressed them in a mould, and after they had cooled we painted them and so had a new ball.” The cost for playing the new course on the hill was $1 for members and non-golf club members as well. The course, howev-

er, offered hazards beyond the natural setting — chief among them, rattlesnakes. In 1917, golfer John Landers wrote in American Golfer magazine: “On warm mornings on the golf links the rattlesnakes come down out of the rocks and play leapfrog and wriggle around in the fairways like Little Egypt, the Queen of the Harem. Some of them are friendly and some of them as dignified as a crossroad banker…” The rattlesnakes also devoured golf balls, supposedly confusing them with gull eggs. Landers again elaborated: “We killed one snake on the seventh green that looked like a string of doughnuts crawling along. When we cut him in two, we recovered three Palmers, two Dunlops, a Red Honor, two Glory Dimples and a Bob.”

With the creation of La Jolla’s first true grass green in 1920, the rattlesnakes began to disappear. It was created on land donated by H.J. Muir, developer of the Muirlands estates who was then president of the golf club. As golf progressed in the 1920s, the creation of a beautiful course and, eventually, the building of the country club in 1927 became synonymous with the growth and modernization of La Jolla. A country club committee surmised in a campaign to enhance the facilities: “Southern California… has become the winter playground of northern people. They come here to be entertained and the one form of entertainment which they demand above all others is golf!”
