Sale of La Valencia could be a ‘win-win’ After drop in market value, ‘Pink Lady’ is under new management BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS Its prominent pink color and towering terraces make La Jolla’s “Pink Lady” — otherwise known to visitors as the La Valencia Hotel — both an architectural icon and historical landmark. Considering the hotel’s recent

change of control, word around town is that those truths will remain unchanged. Pacifica Host Hotels, a San Diegobased company, announced Monday it has firmed up the option of purchasing La Valencia, and the developer has already assumed

management of the property. Spokespeople for both Pacifica and La Valencia, which has been owned by the Collins family for 65 years, decline to comment about the deal. But local hotelier Robert Rauch estimates the hotel’s price tag is about $40 million — a significant drop from the hotel’s 2008 estimated values, which range between $80 and $100 million. Built in 1926, La Valencia sits atop La Jolla Cove in the heart of down-

town and has been dubbed a “Hollywood hideaway” for some of the nation’s most elite celebrities. Pacifica Host Hotels owns more than 30 properties in five states, most of which are brand names such as Holiday Inn, Wyndham, Crowne Plaza and Hilton. Preserving the historic charm of the building while staying afloat in a suffering hotel industry will be no challenge for Pacifica, said Rauch, who is head of R.A. When Jackie Martin heard the words “pirates captured” on the earlymorning news Sept. 8 as she was getting ready for work, her heart sank. “I just froze and listened,” said the mother of 28-year-old Alexander Martin, a platoon commander from Camp Pendleton who has been on a pirate-hunting mission in the Gulf of Aden for 13 months. “Then I Capt. Alexander Martin. heard ‘USS Dubuque’ and my heart sank again, and I went cold until I heard there were no casualties.” Jackie was getting news that her son was the lead captain of a boat that came to the rescue of a pirate-seized ship in the treacherous high seas — a fiction-like story that’s put U.S. forces in the national spotlight for the past week. The story began when the German ship Magellan Star reported that it had been captured by Somali pirates about 85 miles off the Yemen coast. The USS Dubuque was ordered to the scene, and members of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Group scaled the ship by ladder, forcing the pirates’ surrender. Martin, who has served three tours in Iraq, was chosen to give a one-time press conference from overseas Sept. 9 and his account has been circulating in national headlines ever since. “As soon as the first stack of [Marines] made our way SEE MARINE, Page 6

RETIRE

CONTINUED FROM Page 1 just one senior citizen for whom retirement no longer means idle hours at home, frozen TV dinners and listless games of bridge. Instead, it represents new beginnings and the ultimate voyage of self-discovery. In August 2009, Jackson met and married her first husband, Dr. Richard Woodcock, eight years her junior and her neighbor at Vi. Jackson invited him to a party — “he looked lonesome”— and the two began getting together for coffee dates and long walks until Woodcock popped the question last July. They took a hot air balloon ride before exchanging vows at the Vi gardens, and have since circled the globe on a private jet — twice — stopping to explore the Amazon, chase gorillas up a Rwandan mountainside and ride camels through Timbuktu. Each Saturday, the couple celebrates another week of wedded bliss. “We want as many anniversaries as possible,” Jackson laughed. “This week will be 56.” Theresa Latosh, community relations manager for Vi, said Jackson and Woodcock embody what has increasingly become “the new face of retirement.” “Retirement is so much different today than it was for previous generations,” Latosh said. “It’s a more active life mentally, physically and spiritually.” She added that Vi residents tend to be out and about from early morning until evening taking classes at nearby universities, meeting for book clubs and political discussion groups, taking exercise classes like tai chi and yoga, or going on excursions to museums, the symphony, shopping destinations or golf and hiking trips. Other activities include an investment club, a needlepoint group that donates crafts to the American Heart Association, and gatherings for karaoke parties, line dancing and movie nights. “It’s really amazing what an active place this is,” Latosh said. Pat Wood, a Vi resident who spent many years working as a runway and photographic model in

NEWS San Francisco and New York, said staying healthy and active have become even more important to her in retirement. “I don’t consider this an old folk’s nursing home kind of place,” she said. “People have a misconception that you wait until you’re on death row before you decide to do something about your future.” Latosh described Vi as a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) where residents can maintain an independent lifestyle as long as they wish, then move through higher levels of care as their needs change. “There are three primary benefits to this kind of living,” Latosh said. “It’s a great way to protect against rising long-term health costs. Also, there are tax advantages and different retainment options, so you can get a portion of your entry fee back if you choose to leave or have it go to your estate if you live here for the rest of your life.” While about 80 percent of Vi residents are native to the San Diego area — and many from La Jolla specifically — about 20 percent come from all over the country. “Sometimes it’s to be closer to family, sometimes they want to make new friends and sometimes it’s for something as simple as the nice weather,” Latosh said. While the minimum age for residency is 62, the demographics of the more than 500 seniors ranges considerably. One resident, Mary Goldstein, celebrated her 105th birthday this year and still lives independently, Latosh said. “I would say that overall, the average age is getting younger,” Latosh said. “I think people are realizing that they can take advantage of the center while they are still able to live actively.” Loren Gardner and his wife of 56 years, Julie — who had long careers as a mechanical engineer and university professor, respectively — recently discovered extreme sports. The couple began snowboarding in their late sixties as a way to spend more time with their grandchildren. Now, they frequent Sun Valley Resort, Mammoth Mountain and Mountain High — which, Gardner adds, is free for skiers and snowboarders over age 70. “We don’t do jumps or things like that,” he said.

Elizabeth Jackson and Dr. Richard Woodcock have celebrated their anniversary every single Saturday since being married. PAUL HANSEN | Village News

“We just kind of cruise down the hill.” When they aren’t busy checking the forecast for fresh powder, the Gardners travel extensively. Memorable trips have included a cruise to Antarctica, African safaris and, most recently, a historical tour of Iran. While they are at home, however, Vi offers “the largest independent living spaces of any retirement community in the country,” Latosh said. Apartments range from 800 to 3,000 square feet and house two to three bedrooms, plus living rooms and full kitchens. The facility also offers many libraries, outdoor recreational areas and three different dining venues, where residents can take advantage of two daily meals included in their living packages. Entry fees at Vi range from about $300,000 to more than $1 million, Latosh said, and monthly fees range from under $3,000 to more than $5,000. “It’s very accessible to people from a lot of different backgrounds,” Latosh said. Some members of the community have argued that the ranger program is ineffective because his presence on the beach is limited. While it is still “unreasonable” to expect the subsequent full-time ranger to spend 40 hours on the beach, Hawley said, the docent program would help supplement coverage. “A lot of the new ranger’s responsibility will be to coordinate the docent program,” Hawley said. “That’s when you would have an expanded official presence on the beach.”

Inc. Rates have dropped in the luxury hotel industry since 2008, hitting rock bottom the second quarter of 2010. But the market is stabilizing, he said, and if Pacifica is looking for long-term ownership (as opposed to “flipping” the property) the company has its hands on a “trophy asset.” “It’s a win-win situation for both parties,” Rauch said. “The Collins family got their fair market price and Pacifica got a highly unique and desirable property.” According to statements from the Collins family, the change in stewardship is due in part to a polo accident Harry Collins had a few years

He added that the program — which will be comprised of unpaid volunteers — is still in the initial phases. “We’re going to be very selective when hiring docents,” he said. “We will only accept people who are welltrained and understand the political situation, but do not have a personal stake in it.” Though it has come with its share of trials, Hawley said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve at the Children’s Pool. “In my 30 years as a ranger, this has been the most challenging job assignment I’ve ever had, but by far the most rewarding,” Hawley said. “I’ve probably been thanked and had my hand shook for just doing my daily routine more than at any other time in my career.”

back, which hasn’t allowed the family to be “intimately involved in all the details.” Rauch said he knows of at least two companies besides Pacifica that were vying for the management contract, but one company felt the price was “too rich” and the other was having difficulty getting financing. As for the economic downturn, Rauch said La Valencia is a “jewel of a property” and it should see financial success by 2013, especially since Pacifica has been building a good reputation and experience for two decades. His only suggestion? Keep the current management team in place and don’t change the hotel’s day-to-day operations.

NEWS Popular bus route expands service to La Jolla BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS A high-frequency University City bus service known as the “SuperLoop” route has expanded service to the La Jolla Colony area, according to officials with the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG). SANDAG and Metropolitan Transit Services (MTS) implemented changes to Route 30 on Sept. 5, moving it to La Jolla Village Drive from its current path along Nobel Drive, Lebon Drive

and Regents Road. “This change will provide more direct service with shorter trip times for this important regional route that services La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Old Town and downtown,” SANDAG officials said in a statement. The expanded route will include stops at the intersections of Lebon Drive and Palmilla Drive, as well as Regents Road and Arriba Street. It will also serve the University of California, San Diego; the Westfield UTC shopping

center; La Jolla Village Square; La Jolla Village Center; and office clusters on Executive Drive and Genesee Avenue. The buses run every day and arrive every 10 minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes during nonpeak hours. The SuperLoop’s Routes 201 and 202 were launched in 2009 with lowemission hybrid buses, and have transported nearly 900,000 passengers in the first year, according to SANDAG officials.

Planning Commission OKs 3-story Whitney project BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS In what may mark the end of a long and arduous battle, the city’s Planning Commission voted 5-1 on Sept. 9 to reject an appeal by the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA), approving the planned Whitney project in La Jolla Shores. The LJCPA filed the appeal in response to a hearing officer’s decision to approve the project in late July. The project would entail the demolition of two one-story buildings at 2202 and 2206 Avenida de la Playa, paving the way for construction on a three-story building with commercial space on the ground floor, two apartments above and an underground parking lot. LJCPA president Joe LaCava represented the planning group at the hearing. The LJCPA and other organizations have long opposed the project on the grounds that its bulk and scale compromise the character of the

neighborhood. Other opponents have argued the building’s plan lacks sufficient visibility triangles on its northern face bordering Calle Clara. Despite these concerns, LaCava said, the planning commissioners felt the design of the building complies with the La Jolla Shores Planned District Ordinance. “[The] chairman … explored in detail a number of other issues … and felt that the only issue that had merit was the design of the eastern side of the building,” LaCava said. “He sought a redesign to include more articulation. However, the other commissioners did not agree. He noted that his

opposition to the motion was to the project in general, but that it did not address his one concern.” Although the Planning Commission’s decision is final with regard to the discretionary permit, LaCava said the environmental documents could be appealed for 10 working days following the Planning Commission’s decision. As a result, the deadline to appeal would be Sept. 23. Julie Hamilton, attorney for the grassroots community organization La Jolla Shores Tomorrow, said she suspects the Planning Commission’s decision will be appealed, but said she is not certain if the group she represents will be the appellant. Lynne Heidel, the attorney representing the Whitneys, said she was under the impression the environmental document would be appealed. Meanwhile, she said, “I’m sure that Mr. Whitney will make plans to move forward with the project as soon as he can.”

5 PLJ may declare bankruptcy by Oct. 1 if litigation is unresolved BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Promote La Jolla (PLJ), the currently insolvent group that acts as an advisory board to the city-managed Business Improvement District (BID), voted last week to declare bankruptcy by Oct. 1 unless it can resolve the city’s claim over allegedly mishandled funds. “The fact that this matter has not been resolved in four months looms large over Promote La Jolla,” said PLJ President Rick Wildman. Although it has lacked a contract with the city during that time, PLJ has continued to hold regular meetings and has explored potential options for a new BID — either restructuring Promote La Jolla or forming a new group altogether.

“My hope, and everybody’s hope, was that Promote La Jolla would become viable again and would be able to pay its obligations it has incurred to various creditors during the last several years,” Wildman said. However, ongoing threats of litigation with the city — and with the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation following the July 4 fireworks display at La Jolla Cove — made things more complicated. The environmental group, however, dropped PLJ from the lawsuit last week. “This organization [PLJ] is running on fumes,” Wildman said. “Maybe PLJ ought to be put out of its misery. There is no way I see PLJ coming out of this situation as solvent.” In April, Wildman created a new

Residents and community leaders are weighing options to improve road safety along La Jolla Boulevard after two sets of driver-impaired accidents in August and September — one that seriously injured three teens and two adults. Bird Rock residents mull road-safety improvements BY JENNA FRAZIER | VILLAGE NEWS Two recent accidents on La Jolla Boulevard — both involving suspected impaired drivers — have prompted Bird Rock residents to seek heightened police patrols and stricter traffic regulations. Community members discussed options for improving the safety of the streets during a meeting of the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) on Sept. 7. One of the accidents involved an allegedly intoxicated transient, who is accused of seriously injuring three teens and two adults after driving onto the sidewalk and into Cass Street Café on Aug. 15. Then, on Sept. 1, another accident occurred when an allegedly intoxicated driver struck several

parked cars near the Seahaus condominiums. Audience members at the BRCC meeting cited at least two additional, similar accidents in previous years. BRCC president Joe Parker said one of the group’s traffic subcommittees has been working to address unsafe driving in many forms. “Unsafe driving in our neighborhood is a primary and major concern to me as president,” Parker said. “It is something I have addressed with the community at many levels in an effort to heighten awareness about obtaining self-enforcement of poor driving habits, increased police enforcement and also the potential deployment of infrastructure such as medians, stripSEE SAFETY, Page 6

Currently, the new entity has no contract with the city and, consequently, no managerial authority. To become a functioning BID, it would need to form a board of directors and name officers endorsed by the community and acquire a contract with the city.

If PLJ does declare bankruptcy, board member Glen Rasmussen said the new LJBID should seek as much input as possible from local merchants and business owners. “I suggest we talk up getting involved in this so we have a broad base of self-determination,” he said.

However, I do have concerns about the way people negotiate the boulevard and other residential streets in what I believe is an unsafe manner.”

Not a single shot was fired in the capture, which La Jolla lawyer Zach Dostart said makes Martin’s story so legendary. Dostart, a close friend of Martin since the sixth grade, said the act of heroism didn’t come as a surprise. Even when the two played lacrosse and basketball together at La Jolla High School, Martin “struck fear in the hearts of the opposing teams.”

In addition to requesting added police patrols, Parker urged community members to obey speed limits and stop signs and to avoid driving while impaired or while being preoccupied with cell phones and other distractions. Erin Demorest, a representative for District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, said Lightner’s office has asked police to increase patrols of Windansea Beach and the Bird Rock area, “specifically on La Jolla Hermosa Avenue near the ‘Rancho Relaxo’ house where transients have been known to gather.” “We’ve received confirmation from the police department that the increased patrols have already begun,” Demorest added. “He’s a tough cookie and he loves doing what he’s doing,” said Dostart, who had lunch with Martin before he left for his voluntary tour of duty. “He’s the kind of guy who makes you happy to pay your taxes.” Martin is a platoon commander of the Force Reconnaissance Company, which conducts special operation missions. Although the “recon” team boarded the Magellan Star, Marine spokeswoman Jennie Haskamp said the operation involved numerous units, including a landing team, snipers and helicopter surveillance. It was the first such raid carried out by an international fleet of ships created last January to stop the pirate boardings and demands for ransom that have plagued the gulf ’s sea lanes in recent years.

noticed the improvement. “It appears to me that there is an increased police presence not only on La Jolla Boulevard but on residential streets,” Parker said. “We’re also grateful that the beach unit of the [San Diego Police Department’s] Northern Division has been stepping up patrols to deal with what appears to be criminal vagrancy and other related crime issues in our neighborhood.” Parker said the recent accidents, especially the one on Aug. 15 collision involving injuries, should serve as a wake-up call to community members. “The horrible realization that came out of that incident is that it could have been any one of us or our families,” Parker said. “In a flash of a moment, life can dramatically change.”

Jackie said she and her family members, who all live within a mile of each other in La Jolla, have gotten to communicate through e-mail with Alexander since last week’s accomplishment and let him know how proud they are of him and his men. He responds in code, she said, and messages are brief. Jackie — whose other son, Jack, 23, is a Marine who just returned from Afghanistan — said she sticks close to the news as her only source for updates on Alexander’s mission, which is highly classified. “They’ve rarely been home for more than one week a month during this 13-month workup, which is hard on the families,” she said. “I try to stay busy, and I’m proud of what they do and I believe in what they do.”

NEWSbriefs Council initiates medical marijuana ordinance A Sept. 13 City Council decision initiated an ordinance to create zoning laws for medical marijuana dispensaries. The vote directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance following recommendations from the Citizen’s Medical Marijuana Task Force, said District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner representative Alex Varon. “The ordinance would only apply to land use regulations,” Varon said. “Enforcement and guidelines for caregivers and patients is on a separate track and was not considered.” One motion the City Council voted for changes the definition of “school” in the zoning ordinance to include colleges, universities and other higher education institutions. Varon said that once the City Attorney completes a draft ordinance, it would be heard by the Land Use & Housing Technical Advisory Committee, the city’s Code Monitoring Team and the Planning Commission before returning to the City Council. “The best estimate for Council to hear the ordinance is early January,” Varon said.

Daniel Jewelry & Gifts celebrates 32 years BY DIANA CAVAGNARO | VILLAGE NEWS Daniel Jewelry & Gifts store celebrated 32 years in business recently with an anniversary party at the residence of owner Jim Lavi. Guests, friends, and clients came from as far away as Los Angeles, Washington, Phoenix and Colorado to attend the festivities. Lavi provided dancing, music, cocktails and dinner. The celebration started with the marriage of one of Lavi’s clients, Dean Lee. Daniel Jewelry & Gift was established in 1978 in La Jolla. After 19 years, it relocated to the Fashion Valley Mall for 10 years. In 2007, this exclusive store returned to La Jolla and now resides at 1241 Prospect St. The store specializes in diamonds and precious gemstone jewelry. As soon as you enter the store you are surrounded with incredible pieces of jewelry as well as a line of high quality Swiss watches including, IWC, Tag Heuer and Mont Blanc. “Eighty percent of the work is manufactured on the premises and this is what sets us apart from other stores,” Lavi said. The diamond designs range from 1

carat to 10 carats. Award-winning designers Judith Ripka and Roberto Coin, “The King of Gemstones,” are two additional designers that Daniel Jewelry carries. These two extra lines set this exclusive store apart from other jewelry stores. The store also offers another unique gift, a Mont Blanc pen, the ultimate writing instrument. Some of their celebrity clients include Alyssa Milano, Colin Farrell and Hillary Swank. They cater to clients from Asia, Europe and the Middle East as well as the United States. “Watch for a trunk show with Judith Ripka and Roberto Coin that we are planning in December for the holiday season,” said Lavi when asked what the future his future plans are. “They will be in the store to personally greet the clients and show their designs.”

Local boutique Mimi and Red added to its trendsetting franchise recently with a second retail store in the upand-coming Bird Rock community. The “spontaneous” addition has proven more than lucrative, co-owner Rhondda Begley said. Both the hipsters of North Park, where Begley and partner and fellow fashionista Michelle Knudson opened the first Mimi and Red location in April 2007, and the socialites of La Jolla find the latest trends at exceptional prices. The trends remain universal for both locations. “We cater to the same market,” Rhondda said, adding that simple lines and solids sell better in La Jolla. With the exception of a few lines that are sold at neighboring shops, most favorites like BB Dakota and RVCA can be purchased at both stores. The basis for Mimi and Red was built on friendship and fashion. “[We opened] based on our love for clothes and people,” she said. The goal was to “[give] great customer service at a great price,” something they accomplish easily. First time customers and returning regulars find comfort in the shop that caters to unique style. Simply put, “people want to look cute and not spend a lot of money,” Begley said. The La Jolla shop opened in June in a space the women said they couldn’t turn down. After “pulling together what we could” for the expansion, Knudson, the obsessive shopper, and Begley, a savvy businesswoman, have dressed everyone from teens and college students to moms. “We just decided to go for it,” said Begley, whose son calls Michelle Mimi. While the prospect of another store seems overwhelming at the moment, Mimi and Red won’t throw away the notion for expansion in the future. For now, the duo looks forward to learning, supplying new trends and enjoying the time they spend with veteran customers, said Begley. “With too much growth we think we might lose a bit of ourselves. I’d rather put my money into building my

company in a positive way,” she said. Social networking has been a big part of the success, said Begley, who does little “traditional” advertising. Aside from fashion shows and wordof-mouth publicity, Begley and Knudson make sure to pull together donations for fundraisers and events, building a reputation through charity. After four years, Mimi and Red remains one of the few local boutiques

Hessam Abrishami exhibits at Monarch Gallery BY WILL BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS Iranian-born painter Hessam Abrishami, who is currently on view at the Monarch Gallery at 1205 Prospect St., might be described as a painter of what is known in the art world as “desire.” Abrishami’s brightly colorful tapestry — or Persian rug-like impressionistic paintings of non-distinct couples in idyllic idealized embrace and interaction — induce desire, longing, remembrance, wishfulness and nostalgia for lost youth or the simple, sweet, tender, carefree and intoxicating romantic 20-ish involvement between the sexes that most of us once knew. Abrishami’s youthful, slender figures, in couples or in pairs of couples, are usually portrayed lounging on a sofa or chair, sometimes scantilyclad, often with a guitar and half-filled wine glasses or doves present. Their bodies are held in S-shaped curvaceous stances, head often leaning to the side as in the dances of the Sufi whirling dervishes, their faces blank, save a squiggly, sideways M-shaped line, ripe for your projection of self. While a quick passing glance may not reveal their subtle power, the more you look, the longer

you look, the more you want — to be there or return there or to possess the image and its magic to invoke your memory. Abrishami’s works are powerful. They are very seductive, emotional, romantic and poetic. And while they could be considered escapist and perhaps the opposite of socially-engaged art, they do

conjure the distant landscape of fond memory and are hence extremely desirable. Leland Williams, the CEO of Monarch, said he has already sold 16 of the paintings in the opening weekend and has had to restock. Abrishami said that to start a work, which is not planned or strategized, but totally intuitive

La Jolla Historical Society’s Capital Campaign now underway BY RUTH CHANDLER | VILLAGE NEWS With nearly two-thirds of the goal met in donations and pledges, and with only about $720,000 left to be raised, the La Jolla Historical Society has announced the public phase of its capital campaign. The “quiet” phase of the Society’s $2 million campaign, launched in January 2007, was based on the projected costs of renovation and adaptation of the three structures on the property, located on the corner of Eads and Prospect Streets in La Jolla. The site includes the landmark 1904 Wisteria Cottage, Ellen Browning Scripps’ 1896 carriage house, the 1909 beach cottage that serves as the society’s administrative offices, and the historic grounds upon which all three structures reside. “When we started the campaign,” Capital Campaign co-chair Ann Zahner said, “we were just leasing the [Wisteria Cottage] property. Then, in July 2008, the late Ellen Revelle and her family, based on what they saw being achieved at the La Jolla Historical Society, deeded the property to the society. I think we showed that we have a vision about which they were

enthusiastic.” Melesse Traylor, the campaign’s cochair, emphasized the significance of the Revelle donation. “This property had been in the Scripps-Revelle family for over a century,” she said. “Ellen and her children wanted to ensure Wisteria Cottage would be preserved and made available for the wider community’s benefit. The La Jolla Historical Society has been entrusted with an important responsibility and we take that seriously. However, the society can only do so with the community’s support.” Funds raised early in the campaign were used to make interim improvements to Wisteria Cottage and the adjoining Balmer Annex to allow the Society to begin immediate use. It also allowed the Society to begin addressing the many years of deferred maintenance and basic cosmetic and functional repairs essential to its emerging programs. Floors were refinished, interior walls painted and the beautiful windows in Wisteria were finally made operational. The Balmer Annex, the first home of what is now known as La Jolla Country Day School, was SEE LJHS, Page 10

them on the canvas and fill it rapidly. When I paint, I want to be blind to the physical object and see the world without any preconceived notions of the way things should look. I have to move fast to avoid wrestling with my consciousness.” W. Joseph Metcalf, the author of “Expressions of Love: The Art of Hessam Abrishami,” said, “Hessam’s process is intuitive by nature. He approaches the canvas with no direct idea of composition, palette or artistic fundamentals. He comes from a place in his heart, a place of emotion wherein a feeling is expressed. He stays within the emotion he desires to share, holding that feeling in his heart.” The basis of this recovered emotion seems to be in the sounding of memory. “I can see my childhood and the growth of my adolescent years throughout my paintings,” Abrishami said. “I notice that my paintings have become a part of me. They have become my love, my life and most

Bathrooms in Wisteria were made functional though extensive remodeling is still planned to make them ADAaccessible. On the outside, the iconic but deteriorating redwood pergola on which the namesake wisteria vines have grown since the early 20th century was rebuilt to exact specification to the original by La Jolla small businesses Bennett & Associates, Grunow Construction and Dewhurst & Associates. During the pergola’s rehabilitation, the wisteria itself was meticulously trained and pruned under the oversight of master gardener and board member Betty Vale to ensure its stability. Finally, the previously-crumbling front entry concrete walkway was replaced with a new wheelchairaccessible walkway — the Society’s first major effort to ensure greater community accessibility to the historic structures. Earlier this year, renovation of the carriage house to become the Society’s new archives collection storage facility was completed. importantly, my inspiration.” As for his major influences, Abrishami said, “Paul Gauguin, Franz Marc and Henri Matisse expanded the borders of possibilities for me. Looking at them I realized that nothing is fixed or certain. Henri Matisse — through the purity of his color —was essential for my expression.” Abrishami was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1951. He began to study drawing and painting at the age of 16 upon the recommendation of a teacher who noticed his talent. By the time he was 19, he had won first place in Iran’s National Painting Competition. After earning a bachelor of arts degree in architecture in Iran, Abrishami went

to Italy where he received a MFA at the Accademia di Bella Arti Pietro Vanucci. In 1984, after realizing that the art center of the world was in the U.S., he came to this country. His first art show was at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1985. Since then he has become well-known and respected throughout the country. Williams, who has been in the art business in La Jolla for the past 26 years, said Abrishami is a very generous individual who has been a great friend to the gallery for the past 10 years. erous grant from Las Patronas), specialized climate control and fire suppression systems, and a new security system, the exterior façade was restored thanks to the volunteer efforts of John Peek of Peek Brothers Painting and Mike Chism of Chism Brothers. The two La Jollans and friendly business rivals partnered to make the carriage house’s exterior serve as a stunning example of how historic preservation works. With only about $720,000 left to be raised, the Society plans to continue the renovation, effectively divided into four phases. “With the carriage house, the first major phase has been completed thanks to generous early supporters,” Executive Director John Bolthouse stated. “Work in subsequent phases will focus on landscaping, including grading, fences and repairs to sidewalks, along with restoration of Wisteria Cottage’s façade. The third phase will complete the interior renovations of Wisteria Cottage to become a truly multi-use facility for exhibitions, education programs and events. Finally, rehabilitation of the 1909 cottage is planned to feature a more modern and accommodating venue for researchers and more habitable space for staff and volunteers.” In recent years, the Society has presented a flurry of free public exhibi-

tions, programs and events in Wisteria Cottage as part of its efforts to generate greater interest in its emerging role in the community and vision for its future. “Ever since this campaign began,” Bolthouse emphasized, “one of our highest priorities has been to show our generous community supporters — both current and potential — that the La Jolla Historical Society is a good investment of their philanthropic support. History matters in La Jolla, and this organization is the community’s best resource for championing that history.” Traylor and Zahner hope that an improved economy will provide a boost to the campaign but they’re not waiting — strategies aimed at appealing for greater support are underway. “We need a few large gifts to help match the $500,000 anonymous challenge we received in late 2008,” Traylor said. “We believe La Jollans will step forward because they love La Jolla.” La Jolla’s connection to its rich heritage, the La Jolla Historical Society’s offices and archives are located at 7846 Eads Avenue, La Jolla. Open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibition Gallery open Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 4 p.m. Phone (858) 459-5335. www.lajollahistory.org.

An unforgettable La Jolla evening Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas Cheryl and Philip Stewart don’t live full-time in La Jolla — they also like to take time to enjoy New York, Puerto Vallarta and San Antonio. But when they’re here, they reside in a prime example of Thomas Shepherd architecture. It’s a French-Italian eclectic design, built in 1929 and listed on the Historic Register. It was fully restored and artfully decorated in a project taking six years to plan and execute. Philip, who is very detail-oriented, considers such undertakings his hobby. The house is called La Fenice (The Phoenix), after the Venice opera house. It’s rife with symbolism, art and antiques, including a wrought iron peacock from the Paris World’s Fair Pavilion of the early 1900s, an art-deco style arch and much, much more to delight the senses. The home was the site of a recent appreciation dinner for the Honorary Committee of the upcoming Oct. 2 ROMP! benefit for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego (RMHCSD). (Everybody likes a good romp now and then, and this one — chaired by Mary Drake — will feature entertainment by singer

Vikki Carr.) The Stewarts, who are consummate hosts, entertained their guests in classic Southern style, with gracious hospitality and that aforementioned attention to detail. They flew in chefs John Barrios and Kurt Gehlhaar from The Argyle Club in San Antonio, to make special hors d’oeuvres that were tray-passed by waiters in tuxedos and white jackets during the cocktail reception while a harpist performed. Later, the 90 guests (a veritable “Who’s Who” of La Jolla and points beyond) moved to tables around the pool, beautifully decorated and intricately set for a sumptuous six-course dinner deftly prepared by La Jolla’s Giuseppe Ciuffa. Individually personalized menus described the imaginative and complex courses in intricate detail. The “Mana de Leon” scallops, wild Alaskan halibut, and artful fruit and cheese plate were particularly pleasing. A string quartet played softly. Clearly, no effort had been spared to make the dinner, like the rest of the evening, a truly memorable experience. Before the decadently delicious dessert was served, brief talks were given by Philip and top RMHCSD officials. The organization is part of a worldwide network that provides lodging (and substantial other services), free of charge, for families with seriously ill children receiving hospital care far from home. Although our local House is now the largest (with 47 rooms), RMHCSD furnishes accommodations elsewhere when need exceeds capacity. And while local McDonald’s restau-

rants generously provide about 10 percent of their budget, the organization relies on donations and special events (such as the upcoming ROMP!) for the remaining 90 percent. The evening also happened to be Philip’s birthday, and he was surprised to be presented with a gorgeous cake to help celebrate the occasion. The evening continued with spirited entertainment from a formally-dressed violinist, who played as he moved about the venue. He was soon joined by a powerfullyvoiced tenor, who entered from a balcony. Known as L’Orpheus, the duo, flown in from Guadalajara, played and sang among the guests, clearly delighting the crowd. Their show topped off this exceptional evening, which guests will doubtless remember as one of the most glamorous and unforgettable intimate events to grace La Jolla in a very long time. 1. Introducing the only ceramic film worthy of the 3M name BY JEREMY DOBBINS SPECIAL TO VILLAGE NEWS

If you are concerned about rising energy prices, global warming, interior fading of your furniture, artwork and flooring, or if you are worried about the safety and security of your home or business and are seeking some peace of mind, then window film is right for you. The new 3M Ceramic Series films offer three virtues that are most important: low reflectivity, high clarity and outstanding heat reduction. So, you’ll save energy while keeping your interior cool and looking beautiful. Using nanotechnology, 3M has created ceramics so fine they are not only invisible to the naked eye, they are imperceptible with an ordinary microscope. These ceramics allow 3M to create a film that is tough, won’t corrode and is so clear the view out the windows will remain beautiful. The new 3M Ceramic Series delivers stellar performance against solar heat and sunlight. 3M’s spectrally selective films reject up to 80 percent of the sun’s infrared light to reduce energy costs while also blocking more than 99 percent of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays to reduce fading of fabrics. Creating a beautiful home or office takes an investment of time and money. Damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can ruin that investment, fading your fabrics, photos, artwork, wood, carpet and wallpaper. But, because this advanced film blocks more than 99 percent of UV rays, you can fully enjoy your beautiful interiors for years to come. With energy costs seeming to

increase every year, 3M Ceramic Series films are a great way to save money and help the environment. By rejecting up to 59 percent of the total solar energy and up to 80 percent of the heat-producing infrared rays, your cooling system will work less and you’ll be able to maintain a more even temperature throughout your home or office. Depending on the size of your home or office you, could save hundreds or thousands of dollars each year. In addition to its low reflectivity that doesn’t detract from the beauty of your architecture, one of the Ceramic Series’ most impressive characteristics is its amazing clarity. Day or night, this film has a clarity that rivals glass.

3M Window Films — Ceramic Series will look good not just the first year, but for years to come. Sputtered metal films can corrode, often changing color on the edges. Films that rely on dyes are prone to fading over time, changing to a purplish hue. By using advanced ceramics, the 3M film retains its color and appearance over time. Climate Insulating Products, one of the nations largest 3M window film dealers, provided this information. They specialize in residential and commercial installations and have been in business since 1979. Contact them directly at www.climatepro.com or call 1-800-479-6292.
