Chaos at the Woman’s Club
Teenage tales
Past presidents air accusations during recent press conference BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS Accompanied by accusations of unjust secrecy and conflicts of interest, a group of past presidents and members of the La Jolla Woman’s Club is calling for open meetings and a thorough audit of the nonprofit organization, which is funded in large part by rental fees and serves as an exclusive social space for weddings and other gatherings. Calling themselves the Committee to Preserve the Legacy of Ellen Browning Scripps, the former Woman’s Club presidents have no intention of filing suit as of yet, but with the help of attorney Steven Haskins, called a SEE CLUB, Page 4

High school student chronicles stories of teen life in La Jolla BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS Harle Montgomery, 92, remembers the 1920s in tranquil La Jolla, when the population was just reaching the quadruple digits and automobiles began taking to undeveloped coastline roads. All the cars were Model-Ts — black Model-Ts, that is — so her dad painted his car bright pink, and she found it “most embarrassing
learning to drive the only pink car in La Jolla.” Montgomery’s memory is one of many that has been collected by Bishop’s School student Bay ByrneSim in her effort to document and share stories of what it’s like to be a teenager in La Jolla from the community’s beginnings to the present day. On being a teenager in La Jolla in the 1920s: “Finally I got up in the seventh grade in the La Jolla Junior-Senior High. We had 350 students there. Not all of them were La Jolla people because they didn’t have a junior high school down at a place called Pacific Beach. We called it Pumpkin Beach. The kids came up to La Jolla on the electric trolley. The guys in my class elected me to be the one to keep the Pumpkin Beach guys in their proper place.” Gene McCormick “Jean Shafer and I were swimming and we had great fun and so we swam out to the barge … We suddenly got the idea that we would pull off our little top dresses and that we would swim in our Annette Kellermans — in our tight suits — and oh, we thought we were devils. We came back to the beach laughing and giggling and thinking what would they say if they knew we swam in our Annette Kellermans — not in the nude, mind you!” Marjorie Hutchinson “There were no banks in La Jolla. There were no doctors living in La Jolla … We depended on San Diego for almost everything. It meant going backward and forward very frequently on the trains … I think the fare was only 15 cents … It’s more practical to live the way people in La Jolla live now, but it isn’t as fun.” Dr. Joshua L. ‘Avatar’ actor found his passion at UCSD BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS Dileep Rao, who plays scientist Max Patel in “Avatar,” began school at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in the early 1990s as a premed student, but the self-described “theater rat” discovered he had a different passion. Rao, who also plays a key role in “Inception,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is evidence that UCSD is not just a breeding ground for renowned scientists, but stars of Dileep Rao the entertainment industry as well. The Los Angeles-born actor revisited UCSD Tuesday evening, Sept. 21, to address some 5,000 incoming freshman and transfer students as part of the university’s yearly inaugural dinner at RIMAC Field. “He wants to let students know they are the authors of their own book,” said UCSD spokeswoman Christine Clark. “He believes students can create their own path and he had a very transformative experience at UCSD.” Rao still has a strong relationship with the university and keeps in close touch with former professors such as Steven Adler, co-chair of the campus Convocation Committee. It was in Adler’s acting classes that Rao developed a passion for theater. Adler, who also teaches classes in stage management and the films of Woody Allen, said Rao possesses “deep convictions about both the power of an education and his own experiences at UCSD.” Other notable UCSD alumni who have made it big in the entertainment industry include Ricardo Chavira, who plays Carlos Solis on “Desperate Housewives,” Peter Robbins, the original voice of Charlie Brown and “King of the Hill” creator Mike Judge.

The 11th-grader hopes to earn a Gold Award — the Girl Scouts of America’s highest honor — for the exhibit, titled “Identity,” which is on display at The Wisteria Cottage until Oct. 3. her project also serves another noble purpose — to document history at the same time it is displayed. On a table in the display room lies a stack of questionnaires in which La Jollans are asked details of their own teen years, and these accounts will be preserved for posterity in the Historical Society’s archives. Brindah Byrne, 51, remembers “necking” with her now-husband at what she called the “bridge to nowhere,” which had dirt roads leading to and away from it. NEWSbriefs La Jolla to get ‘pelican brown’ ash cans The Surfrider Foundation will install the first 10 of 120 cigarette ash cans Oct. 6 in spots with heavy foot traffic on Girard Avenue and Prospect Street. The foundation’s Strategic Ash Can (SAC) initiative began in 2006 in Ocean Beach with 40 installations and it has also reached parts of Pacific Beach. Surfrider Chairman Manase Mansur said he presented the idea to the La Jolla Town Council about six weeks ago and members were extremely welcoming to the proposal and wanted to get started with installation right away.
Mansur said the cans cost about $200 each and he hopes to secure funding for about 120 of them. La Jolla officials identified 91 spots in the Village that need ash cans, and he said there are about 30 other locations in La Jolla Shores and Bird Rock that are in need of SAC installation. Mansur also said Surfrider has found a manufacturer in San Diego County to produce the product, which will be made especially for La Jolla in a “pelican brown” color. The Surfrider Foundation has about 5,000 members in San Diego, making it the largest chapter in the world. The foundation will look to secure funding from local businesses for the SAC initiative in La Jolla. SEE BRIEFS, Page 5

Evacuation a Special Challenge for Frail Elderly When disaster looms – such as a nearby fire – we may be asked to evacuate to a safe place until the danger passes. For most this is a huge inconvenience and a cause of much stress. But the frail elderly face a much larger challenge. They may be unable to organize to leave, may have nowhere to go, may be unable to collect pets and important papers, may be paralyzed by fear. Help your elder prepare a Disaster Bag in advance. Collect vital materials and check regularly to assure it is complete and available. Remember, the elder must be able to physically grab the bag and go, so it must not be too heavy. Do not keep the bag in a very warm place such as a car as medication deteriorates in heat. A supply of required medication for 1 week should be adequate, but also include a list of medications with the prescription numbers and the name of the pharmacy so they can be refilled. Also include a spare pair of eye glasses and any assistive devices. A copy of their ID, insurance papers, and Medicare card should be included. Put a list of important emergency contacts and include clothing for a week. Hygiene items can be included, but not large bottles of liquid. Preparation is the key. The better prepared the less anxiety, the best opportunity for a good outcome. The nurses and caregivers at Innovative Healthcare Consultants will be glad to assist. See our website at www.innovativehc.com or call us at (877) 731-1442.

Leskewski-Grove stepped down from her position as treasurer Sept. 13. Hilda Berg, a former president and spearhead of the committee, called it an “economic crime to do business from a charitable institution.” The committee also alleges that the Woman’s Club has lost more than half of its liquid assets and is in “dire financial straights.” However, board Vice President Margo Ehman-Singleton, who came out of the clubhouse to respond to the press conference, said a recent internal audit didn’t turn up any discrepancies. On that same day, a heated 40member meeting regarding the organization’s operations and leadership took place in response to a letter sent by Dewey to the entire membership, Ehman-Singleton said. In addition, Haskins said he hand delivered a letter alleging “improper activities” and “general lack of transparency” to board members during that private meeting, but was asked to leave. Only days before, Ehman-Singleton said, Dewey was caught recording a closed meeting. The Woman’s Club doesn’t receive public funds, but gets tax breaks for its nonprofit status. Ehman-Singleton said the board is acting within the law by having closed meetings and “there is a reason for that,” she said — to hide what she described as “inappropriate” bickering. “Once you’ve got people banging down the door yelling things, that’s when you go behind closed

But, Haskins said, “even if they could meet secretly, they shouldn’t.” On Oct. 4, the board will hold a meeting to discuss how to move forward amid all the disarray, EhmanSingleton said. “By next meeting we will hopefully get some guidelines in place and, as soon as these things are resolved, get a new president in place,” she said. Ehman-Singleton said the club holds yoga classes on Wednesdays and bridge on Thursdays, and she hopes to start a reading and literature club there, as the Woman’s Club began in 1896 as the “La Jolla Current Events and Reading Club.” Designated in 1973 by the city of San Diego as Historical Site No. 79 — the first historical site in La Jolla — the clubhouse was a gift given by Ellen Browning Scripps in 1913. The La Jolla Community Planning Association voted to deny a height variance for the proposed $10 million, 21,000-square-foot library and learning center at The Bishop’s School. COURTESY OF THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL
Plans to construct a new $10 million, 21,000-square-foot library and learning center at The Bishop’s School have been at least temporarily derailed, following a La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) decision earlier this month to deny the institution a height variance for the project with an 8-6 vote. “The existing library is in a portion of an 80-plus-year-old building,” said Christopher Neils, an attorney representing The Bishop’s School. “It is cramped and far less than ideal, and does not offer much in the way of areas for students to gather and study together.” The new facility — consisting of a basement and two above-ground levels — would include a library plus classrooms, quiet study areas

Six Ventura County men set a new world record for open-water relay swimming Sept. 20, when the men swam into La Jolla Cove after spending more than four days in the ocean. The swimmers call themselves the Ventura Deep Six, and they beat the previous record by more than 100 miles. The men started swimming at Ventura Harbor on Sept. 16, reached Santa Barbara the next day and then journeyed south to La Jolla, swimming a total of 202 miles. Chronicling the feat via videos on a Facebook page, one man spoke of dire lack of sleep and fish that actually drew blood by nibbling
and group meeting rooms with individual computer docking stations. Despite a unanimous recommendation from the Development and Permit Review subcommittee — which recommended a 2.1-foot variance instead of the 4-foot variance Bishop’s originally requested — the LJCPA voted to deny any variance because some board members feared it could set a precedent for future applicants. “I understand the concern about setting a precedent,” Neils said. “But in terms of real impact, this is a not-for-profit educational institution in the cultural zone of La Jolla, surrounded by other buildings that already exceed the project’s height by 15 or 20 feet. I don’t think any commercial developers could take advantage of that.” Neils said that the only reason the project

UCSD ranked 32nd-best university in the world The Times Higher Education, a London-based higher ed magazine, has ranked The University of California San Diego No. 32 in a worldwide analysis of universities. In conjunction with Thomson Reuters, the “World Universities Rankings 2010” placed less importance on heritage and reputation than in previous years and gave more weight to research and teaching, said Times Higher Education editor Ann Mroz in a recent statement. This global honor comes as UCSD celebrates its 50th anniversary.
required a variance was because the zoning code stipulates that the height be measured from existing ground levels, rather than the actual height of the building. He added that the city requested project managers to raise the building four feet by filling in the ground level to allow for better water drainage during rainfall. “So, we lost four feet of building height right away,” he said, adding that the project designers did not feel they could adequately fit the project into 26 feet. The next step for the project is uncertain. “A decision will likely be made soon because there was so much momentum built up around this project,” which the school hoped to finish in time for the 2012 school year, Neils said. “They won’t want to let it sit around for months.”

OPINION Public art flourishes on Governor Drive in University City 6
THURSDAY · SEPTEMBER 23, 2010 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS

Bursting with color The University City Community Association (UCCA) has undertaken an unusual public art project on its main street: Governor Drive. Welcome to the Louvre. Since September is art month in San Diego, University City is undergoing an artistic transformation. With permission from San Diego Gas and Electric, UCCA’s Barbara Gellman took chairmanship duties and invited artists to paint designs on the dull green and sometimes rusty transformer boxes. Two Rubik’s cubes sit at the corner of Radcliffe and Governor Drive on the campus of Standley Middle School. Graphic artist Josh Lary, who also lives in University City, honored the 30th anniversary of the Rubik’s cube designed by Hungarian Erno Rubik. Josh felt the middle school was an ideal place, and the students seem to love the two giant Rubik’s cubes. Check out the www.rubiks.com for the interesting history of the toy puzzle. Artists Gail and Chuck Conners, the only duo and married couple involved, have dedicated two boxes to children by painting a zoo scene on the three sides of a box in front of the Marketplace Shopping Center. StepStone Realty manages Marketplace and managed to support the project with a $500 donation. A mother and baby giraffe are on one side, a baby panda on the other side, and front and center an elephant and rhinoceros draw many visitors to the box, especially the children. Three toddlers, affectionately called The Miller Men, are frequent visitors in their triple stroller. Grandma Miller is thrilled with this zoo. The neighboring box at Regents Road and Governor Drive has become an aquarium; the Conners were inspired by their visits with grandchil-

dren to Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. All kinds of fish swim around that box. Nancy Beck, a Century-21 Realtor and resident of University City, donated $500 to support the project. Each artist earns $100 for her and his efforts. The Conners split the $100 for each box, but the community gets double the work. Art in front of a gas station? Of course, the gas stations have transformer boxes that have become canvasses for two women. Sarah O’Connor, an art teacher and juried artist, designed wild birds in flight with a warm yellow sky. Sarah studied Rose Canyon birds for her inspiration. Next to her artwork between the gas station and Curie Elementary School, Deanna Ditzler, a longtime resident of University City, painted three sides of the box — a poignant picture of a mother and child reading a book, a Grand Canyon interpretative art piece
and a duo of lifelike peacocks. Ditzler, like the rest of the artists, has had many, many people stop by to compliment her art. One 9-year-old Curie student became a fan of her work when Ditzler first chalked out the design, the boy’s mother said. He keeps coming back to watch Ditzler’s progress. Dorothy Annette comes to this project as a veteran of the first transformer box art in downtown San Diego several years ago. She has a resume as an artist as long as Governor Drive. A pair of bright red Converse shoes will be hanging on the box in front of Standley Park’s Swanson Pool when Dorothy finishes. She has earned many awards at juried shows and University City. is glad to have her expertise. Standley Recreation Council gave $300 to help with the art projects in front of the pool and at McElroy Field. Forbidden Yogurt also donated $100.
Heidi Hugli, who grew up in University City and currently teaches at Patrick Henry High School, took an idea from artist Marc Chagall. Hugli’s colors are vibrant and powerful. Deanna Ditzler will be painting wild horses on a tall box near the Chagall. United Oil and Coldwell Banker UC Realtors are donating $200 each to the art project. On the south side of Governor Drive near the entrance to I-805, Jeff Donndelinger, a San Diego State University and University City High School (UCHS) grad, who has recently returned to live in University City, has designed a beautiful, energetic artwork that fits into the industrial park environment. Another UCHS grad, Rebecca Heywood, who will be a UCLA senior, was snapping pictures of several painted boxes. “This is such a great part of the community,” she said. Sharon Thomerson, our new head
librarian, embraced this project and got the vegetation surrounding the transformer box at University City Library trimmed back so that artists could do their design. Curie principal Chris Juarez came on board when he was told Curie could have its transformer box painted. Both of these important educators, a principal and a head librarian, would probably agree with the British Urban Generation Association: “Public art can make a major contribution to giving a place character and identity, bringing people into and through places, generating civic pride in a neighborhood and improving its image.” Find your way to Governor Drive and get out of your car and study the work of these creative artists. It will lower your blood pressure and give you a lift. UCCA will eventually have a “Meet the artist” event. Stay tuned.
some were on those same rocks this year. It has only been in the last few years that they have taken up residence on the beach. Policies that increase the seal population may have detrimental effects. My observation is that people and seals can coexist. Reserving the Children’s Pool for seals only is an extreme position. Making the beach off-limits
to people is anti-family and potentially dangerous, as it forces families to use beaches less safe for small children. We would like to see the lifeguard station and the restrooms upgraded and the beach well-used by people — like it was for decades before.

You can rent a private room in a restaurant and invite a dozen friends to a dinner party, thus reciprocating several invitations at once.
5.
If you are out with a man, and he has invited you, then you can offer to split the bill — but not insist. After several such invitations, when he keeps paying, you may want to have a frank discussion about your relationship, which includes who pays when and for what. I went out to dinner and a movie with a male friend (not a date), when he paid for the meal, I said I would get the movie tickets. It worked.
6.
There is also the issue of going alone to an opening, a gala or a fancy fundraiser, where the dress is formal and there might be dancing. I find this awkward. The way to do it is to find out if any of your friends are going and ask to sit at their table. I have also invited a woman friend to accompany me to such events. It is interesting that in our day and age it is still more difficult for a woman to call a man and ask him out than it is for a man to call a woman. I find it somewhat frustrating dealing with being single in a couples’ world as there are no guidelines on how to navigate these new waters. As the population grows older, there will be more widows since women still outlive men, and we need comfortable ways of managing societal expectations.

The Full Monty..."Girls Night Out" at the Welk Resort Theatre “Seeing how much their wives enjoy watching male strippers during their "Girls' Night Out," unemployed steelworkers in Buffalo, New York come up with a bold way to make some quick cash. In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun. As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties (over everything from being overweight to child custody, bigotry to being gay), they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them. There is great heart to THE FULL MONTY, and the ultimate themes expressed in the show, about taking charge of one's life and following one's dreams are great lessons for all of us. And truth be told, through creative directing and staging, the final impact of "The Full Monty" can be achieved without ever losing your jockey shorts! The Welk Theatre rates this one a strong PG-17 (even with some cleaned up language) and very brief nudity – The Welk does not recommend this show for children under 17 years old. Director Nick DeGruccio and Choreographer Ray Limon team up for the first time and it promises to be spectacular! The Welk hopes to attract some new audience with this musical, and wants not to offend those who are more traditional musical theatre fans. Monty runs Sept 9 – October 17 with 1pm matinee performances on Wed/Thurs/Sat/Sun and evening shows Thurs/Sat. La Jolla cross-country team chases lofty goals BY LEE CORNELL | VILLAGE NEWS

This week, Bishop’s hosts Mar Vista High at La Jolla High Sept. 25 and Country Day has a bye. DON BALCH | Village News
The La Jolla High School boys cross country team is making strides under second-year head coach Robert McCarthy. After qualifying for and finishing 16th at state last season, McCarthy is raising the bar in his expectations. “I feel we have at least as good a team and our long-range goal would be to finish in the top 10 in the state championships,” McCarthy said. Andrew Farkas and Alex Eve, a dynamic pair of seniors, lead the Vikings. While those two are easily the strongest runners at La Jolla High, they are also a great example to the younger members of the team. “They are excellent leaders as far as attitudes, work ethics and how they accept our younger and newcomer
runners,” McCarthy said. “I already miss them for next season.” Farkas trained extremely hard this summer, logging nearly 700 miles so he could be in tip-top shape coming out of the gates. He also trained extensively with his teammates, including his friend, Eve. McCarthy said having two elite runners on the same team is beneficial because they push each other to improve. “The two of them are good friends and have the good fortune of being two of the better runners in Division III,” McCarthy said. “They are able to work with each other every day in order to better themselves and help the school out quite a bit, too.” Farkas started long-distance running in sixth grade and he tries to relay his extensive knowledge to the less experienced runners on the team whenever he can. “I try to fill in the gaps and help our other runners,” Farkas said. “I give them advice on how to run, when to go harder. I try to give them a lot of form advice like how to stay relaxed. I try to give them six years of experience right now and tell them everything I’ve learned, and I feel like it has helped.” In the spring, Farkas cracked the school’s record books when he notched a 4:19 mile to jump onto the elite top 10 list. He also had excellent showings in the 800-meter race. Also an astute student, the speedster is still undecided on what college he will attend next year but is considering a wide range varying from UC Santa Barbara to Colorado and Michigan.

“I want to run in college, hopefully somewhere competitive,” Farkas said. “I’d like to run on a scholarship and if I make top 10 at state, I can show that I’m competitive.” Eve also plans to continue running at the next level and is narrowing his decision down to smaller schools on the East Coast. S o p h o m o r e s D a n i e l Fa r k a s (Andrew’s brother) and Daniel Hamilton are working hard to solidify themselves as consistent top-five finishers on the squad. It takes five runners to score in cross country team competition. McCarthy said there are a number of talented sophomores on the team but it’s still too early to tell who will step up and contribute down the stretch when the races are most important.

Possibility of peace “Scenic View of the Village,” by Chicago-born artist Belle Baranceanu, adorns the La Jolla Post Office. The mural is a 1930sera government-commissioned Public Works of Art project. DON BALCH | Village News
Speaker describes the creator of a modernist masterpiece BY CLAIRE HARLIN | VILLAGE NEWS The stacked cliffs, uninhabited shorelines and winding roads that comprise the La Jolla Post Office’s esteemed mural “Scenic View of the Village” are unarguably complex. “The roads seem to have no end,” said Bram Dijkstra, emeritus professor of literature at The University of California, San Diego. “You could stand there for hours and look at it.” In fact, the work of art is almost as complex as the woman who painted it. C h i c ago - b o r n a r t i s t B e l l e Baranceanu was commissioned to create the piece, one of few that are still in existence from the 1930s government-conducted Public Works of Art Project, and Dijkstra visited The La Jolla Historical Society’s Wisteria Cottage Sept. 16 to share insight of her legacy. Young, feisty and small in stature, Dijkstra described Baranceanu as someone who was determined to
develop her own modernist style during The Great Depression, a time when modernism was almost nonexistent. She fell in love with her mentor, Italian artist Anthony Angarola, and ended up denouncing her real last name, Goldschlager, as her Orthodox Jewish father didn’t allow the relationship. Baranceanu was known for her free spirit that was impossible to suppress. She turned down a job at The Bishop’s School because she wasn’t allowed to wear sandals, and even in her last days she could be found dancing in the halls of her nursing home. Modern and abstract, the La Jolla Post Office mural is quite different than what the U.S. government had in mind for its public works during The Great Depression. But luckily, Dijkstra said, the painting was free of content depicting social issues. More than 100,000 public works produced during that era were destroyed due to their controversial
content. Another of Baranceanu’s pieces, on the other hand, was torn down in La Jolla High school because the wall was considered “earthquake-unsafe.” John Bolthouse, director of the Historical Society, said the post office, in addition to its mural, is one of few buildings in La Jolla that have maintained its original form and façade since the 1930s. “It’s important to bring to light that heritage,” Bolthouse said. “Especially since 1935 La Jolla was only a small percentage of what you see now.” —The program regarding the “Scenic View of the Village” mural at the La Jolla Post Office is one of the many projects of the La Jolla Historical Society. The organization is in the midst of the public phase of its capital campaign. For more information or to contribute to the campaign, call (858) 459-5335 or visit www.lajollahistory.org.

A view into an artist’s connection with his people BY WILL BOWEN | VILLAGE NEWS Galeria Jan, 1250 Prospect St., has opened a new and highly important art exhibition by Zoltan T. Zivkovic called “Women’s Book of Blessings and Transformation.” Zivkovic was born in Sarajevo in 1962 and currently lives and works as an artist and art professor in Sweden. His show, which points to the themes of the survival of a community under adverse circumstances, and the possibility that Jews, Christians, and Muslims might live together in peace, consists of a collection of 16 paintings and 17 supplementary drawings. The paintings are of young Jewish women, in twos and threes, with flesh-tone faces, brown eyes, reddish brown hair or shawl-like head piece, set against a yellowish background, wherein there are said to be historic scenes. Sometimes the women wear partial Venetian masks, or have palm flowers on their heads, or are transforming into men — which is meant to symbolize their strength for holding the family and the community together.
The women are Sephardic Jews — expelled from Spain in 1492 by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella under the Alhambra Degree — who are in transit out of Spain, passing through Italy and destined for Sarajevo in the Balkans. The supplementary drawings, in black and white pencil, depict scenes from the Jewish community’s passage. The artist’s inspiration for this collection comes from The Sarajevo Haggadah, which is one of the oldest and most valuable Sephardic Haggadahs in existence. A Haggadah is the song and story of the Exodus of the Jews out of Egypt. It is read to accompany the Passover Seder — a feast of celebration. The Sarajevo Haggadah originated in Barcelona around 1350 and was probably given as a wedding gift from a wealthy Jewish family. It is handwritten on bleached calfskin and illuminated in copper and gold. It opens with 34 pages of scenes from the Old Testament, from creation through the death of Moses. Notes found in the margins of the text indicate it surfaced in Italy in the 16th SEE ZIVKOVIC, Page 12

Starry, starry nights
with Vincent Andrunas Two big galas gave La Jolla partygoers a difficult choice to make on a recent Friday evening. One, a benefit for Voices for Children, was held at Joan Waitt’s large, beautiful and scenic Mount Soledad estate. They called the al fresco gala “Starry, Starry Night” (though perhaps not in honor of this column). Co-chairs were Dawn and Bill Davidson with Caroline and Anthony Farwell. They had hoped to sell as many as 500 tickets, but by the evening of the event they found they needed to add a few more brightly-decorated tables to accommodate a total of 542 guests. Arriving partygoers enjoyed wines and cocktails, Jeff Strauss’ famed signature hors d’oeuvres (always a hit), and live entertainment by Ruby and the Red Hots. (Jeff ’s Pamplemousse Grille also created an exceptional dinner featuring porcini-dusted sea bass.) Joan Waitt and her children were honored for their extraordinary support with Voices’ first Celestial Award. A video presentation helped illustrate the organization’s role as advocates for the rights and well-
being of San Diego’s abused children in the courtroom, the school and the community. It’s their goal that one day, every foster child will have a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) to protect his or her best interests. This event netted more than $600,000 to help toward that goal. ••• That same night, Athenaeum Music and Arts Library’s 21st annual gala celebrated Argentina with a sensual “TANGO! TANGO! TANGO!” theme. Many guests arrived dressed as gauchos or as sexy tango dancers. Camarada provided the music as Tango Alma dancers performed on the patio stage, followed by the traditional parade around the block with the entertainers, committee members and guests. More music and dancing ensued in the Athenaeum’s foyer, while the guests sipped refreshing Argentine Gimlets, the evening’s signature drink. Bright decorations were all about, many made from such recycled materials as plastic bottles cut to resemble colorful flowers. Dinner featured moist and tender rare-cooked beef in the Argentine style (hearty sustenance for vigorous tango dancers). High energy and a huge silent auction helped make this another highly successful gala for the Athenaeum. Much of the decoration expense was recovered by an auction of the décor items the next day, further improving the bottom line. ••• The Neurosciences Institute’s primary mission is to carry out scientif-
ic research to better understand how the brain works, for the benefit of mankind. Its Music and the Brain Research Program considers how brains perceive and react to music. The Institute also has one of the finest auditoriums in the area, which they provide, free of charge, to local nonprofit arts and educational organizations for about 100 performances annually. But energy, maintenance, cleaning, security and other expenses total about $300,000 per year. The annual Minding the Arts fundraiser, held on a recent Sunday, helps sustain this valuable asset. Guests enjoyed a relaxed outdoor cocktail reception with a variety of gourmet food and beverages provided by numerous fine local purveyors. A harpist played softly, and the weather was perfect. A concert followed in that acoustically-remarkable hall. Nicolas Reveles emceed the program, which featured a variety of entertainment indicative of the eclectic range of organizations that benefit from the free use of the auditorium. During WW II it was sought out by the Nazis, but hidden from them by a Muslim cleric under the flooring of a mosque in Zenica. During the siege of Sarajevo by Serbian forces it was
almost stolen by thieves. In 1991, it was appraised as worth $700 million dollars. It is currently on display at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. The manuscript is unique in that the drawings it contains show a mixture of Christian, Jewish and Muslim influence. The figures are dressed (even the Pharaoh) in medieval Spanish clothing and regalia, the backgrounds are Islamic tiles and the stories are Jewish. Christians and Jews coexisted. Its long term survival has been possible only through the help of both Christians and Muslims. The Sarajevo Haggadah, describing the Exodus of the Jews out of Egypt, seems to represent, for Zivkovic, the Jew’s exodus from Spain and their eventual resettlement in Sarajevo. His work especially points out how women contributed to the survival of the Jewish people and it celebrates Miriam — the first Jewish woman of Spanish origin to give birth to a baby in Sarajevo. Zivkovic’s art expresses his inner connection to the past of his people. He writes, “I saw one of the finest books in the world (the manuscript) and I understand what I am … I have created one of the many windows to my intimate world. The red and yellow vermilion color interwoven in golden hues is still the color of my dreams. It is the story from the soul of a man. It seems that I am crying of wishes to return to that time.” In addition to viewing Zivkovic’s paintings and drawings, you can also view a copy of The Sarajevo Haggadah and its translation into English at Galleria Jan. Pulitzer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks’ novel “People of the Book,” which is a fictionalized account of The Sarajevo Haggadah and its journey from Spain through Italy to Sarajevo, is also on hand to examine. It turns out that Geraldine Brooks originally got the idea for her book from viewing a copy of The Sarajevo Haggadah when she visited Galeria Jan years ago. The combination of seeing Zivkovic’s art and looking through the books, plus a little conversation with gallery owner Biljana Beran, is a powerful and moving experience that will rekindle your hope that we might all live together in peace. While at the gallery, be sure to view the collaborative painting by Zivkovic and Jan Beran (Biljana’s husband), which is called “A Fairy Tale Is About To Happen.” This piece is up for silent auction. The entire proceeds will be used to help a young woman from Sarajevo, living in Italy, who is in desperate need of a pancreatic transplant. News, Radio And A Number Of Local Papers And Magazine Articles. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
