What first started with just 14 local farmers, one artisan, a manager and the lofty dream of founder Sherry Ahern developed over the years into one of the largest and most diverse farmers markets in San Diego. Now, 14 years later, the local market can boast 36 certified farms and ranches offering a wide variety of fruits and vegetables picked right off the vines, a spread of artisan cheeses and quality meats, and the freshest eggs around. With the county’s highest number of certified farmers participating in La Jolla’s weekly market and a wide range of one-of-a-kind artisans and vendors to boot, residents and tourists alike are hard-pressed to walk away empty-handed. “We were the first market ever to introduce an artisan section,” said Julia Kaplan, executive member of Friends of La Jolla Elementary and La Jolla Open SEE MARKET, Page 7

For LJ gallery owner, healing starts with art BY KENDRA HARTMANN | VILLAGE NEWS For Lorna York, art does much more than simply sit on a wall looking aesthetically pleasing. Or rather, that is exactly what it does, but it’s the effect of that on the human mind that she said can be truly remarkable. “So many studies have shown that certain forms of music or artwork have healing properties,” she said. “That said, not all artwork will do that. Art being painted by say, a heroin addict, won’t have healing properties.” York, owner of Madison Gallery on Prospect Street, doesn’t just wax sentimental about the various qualities art offers outside of its obvious visual ones. She actually puts her money where her mouth is. On Nov. 3 — at the Top Docs gala at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla — York will announce the recipient of the third annual Healing Art Fund, which bestows on the winning medical facility a work of art to display on its walls. The concept of the Healing Art Fund is that each year, York donates to one facility a paintSEE ART, Page 5

Operation Santa’s crew gears up for another season of giving to San Diego’s families in need. Courtesy photo
Santa gears up to help local families in need The 2012 Operation Santa program is officially in effect. The college-student-run holiday donation drive — chaired this year by UCSD students Kelly Wong, Connie Tran, Joyce Hsiao and Michelle Cao — will be assisting San Diego families in need throughout the season to ensure as many families as possible fulfill their holiday wish lists. Hosted by community-service organization Alpha Phi Omega, Operation Santa helps families through a nomination and “adoption” program, wherein families either nominate themselves or are referred by a friend on the organization’s website, operationsantasd.org. Families are then “adopted” by members of the community or by Alpha Phi Omega, and wish lists — which typically consist of necessi-
ties, food and children’s toys — are fulfilled and delivered to each family. Last year, the organization set a record by helping 132 local families. Families must be nominated by midnight on Nov. 11. For more information about how to nominate families, to become a community adopter or for other ways to help, visit operationsantasd.org.

Community leaders address Cove’s fowl stench BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla Cove businesses are doing more than just anxiously awaiting a solution for the rank odor emanating from the Cove, which many say has affected the livelihood of businesses and the quality of life. Area merchants have taken action through the La Jolla Village Merchants Association (LJVMA) by circulating a petition urging District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner to expedite a solution to the smell from the cormorant colony that is overtaking the Village. Lightner and representatives from the Regional Water Quality Control Board, California Coastal Commission, city park and recreation and stormwater departments held a meeting on Oct. 7 to discuss options for addressing the issue. Any option to tackle the issue would require permits and review by the Coastal Commission and Regional Water Quality Control Board, said Jennifer Davies, spokeswoman for Lightner’s office. “All agencies made clear that there are no overnight solutions,” she said.

French-American school introduces Mandarin Students at the San Diego FrenchAmerican School (SDFAS) are, as of this month, starting to learn the Mandarin Chinese language in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes, announced Christian Jarlov, head of school. While the majority of the children are still concentrating on French
immersion, children who are fluent in both the French and English languages are being introduced to Mandarin, a language spoken by one in every six people in the world. The purpose, Jarlov said, is to introduce the children to yet another language and one that is quite different from the three Western languages —
French, English and Spanish — that are already a part of the curriculum. “Our students at the French-American school are already benefiting from a bilingual education that will enable them to read and write in both French and English by the end of first grade,” Jarlov said. “The introduction of Mandarin will enable our students
to benefit from the exposure to sounds that are very different from Western languages, and it will open their ear to different tones, and help develop their memory through the study of Chinese Children ages 3, 4 and 5, already fluent in French and English, characters.” Many studies have are introduced to Mandarin as part of the curriculum at San Courtesy photo proven that children Diego French-American School. are capable of learnsupport to those who are new to the ing languages very easily at an early French language. age and that the learning process Students in first grade and up at makes them not only excellent com- SDFAS have the option of studying municators in their own language, Mandarin as an after-school activity. Instead of throwing “just another cocktail party” or writing a check to support various organizations in need, York wanted to “bring communities together.” The Top Docs gala, which recognizes San Diego’s top doctors as voted on in San Diego Magazine, provided the perfect backdrop for York’s philanthropic aspirations. “I wanted to show how these doctors could do something for their com-

Respect the law. Respect our city! I just read the story about the yardsign thefts in the Shores and almost laughed out loud! To begin with, this antiquated egobased method of campaigning not only shows a propensity to waste money, but when used as intended and legally installed in yards, they do little more than alienate neighbors with opposing views. I would hope no voter makes their decisions based on a sign with a name or “yes” or “no” printed on it. The reality is, the majority of these eyesores are installed in the dark of night, either along the sides of our roads, taped up to public poles or stuck in fences surrounding private properties, all illegally. One candidate’s signs go up and the rest follow like sheep. I expect more from our leaders. When I have called or emailed the candidates to bring this to their attention, they universally deny responsibility and claim they can’t control their own workers. This is not a reassuring quality in someone who claims they are going to attempt to fix much bigger problems.

It’s bad enough our mailboxes are so crammed with political fliers slamming the opponents; at least they contain a sliver of information. The yard signs have little more than a name and should be discontinued entirely; the monies would be better spent providing facts about the candidates and issues we vote on. In too many other places of the world, this ambiance has been destroyed by excess development. A vote for Sherri is a vote to assure that the rules and processes to maintain that ambiance remain in place and continue to be enforced. Some do not like this care for La Jolla because they know they can make a bigger development profit if they buy low while restrictions are in place and then use politics to remove or ignore the restrictions to make a quick profit. Erin Fader showed her Trashy Chic Jewelry, Sameerah Yasmeen Corporal highlighted her SYC Women’s wear, Evelyne Aguilar presented her nOia Collection and Whitney Francis showcased her CreativeFashionista collection. FOR THE CROUTONS: • 3 large slices thick sourdough bread, (slightly stale OK, cubed) • 1/2 tsp fresh lemon zest • 1 T and 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) • 1 tsp garlic-infused EVOO • 1.5 T grated Romano or Parmesan cheese • 1/4 tsp paprika • 1 tsp dried Italian seasoning mix • 1/4 tsp kosher salt • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine all crouton ingredients and stir-in the cubed bread, coating well. 2. On a foil-lined baking sheet with rims, arrange bacon slices for baking in oven. 3. On a second baking sheet, evenly spread coated bread cubes for baking. Place both pans in oven to bake simultaneously. Bake the bacon until crispy/ browned (thicker slices will take longer — ranges from 20-35 min). 4. Remove cooked bacon and blot with paper towels, cool on wire rack preferably, set aside. 5. Bake croutons until crisp and browned, but not overly hardened (anywhere from 10-20 min), stir once during. 6. In small mixing bowl, whisk salad dressing ingredients, adding more mayo and/or balsamic to taste (this will be very thick). Chop spinach and romaine well and add to salad bowl. Add halved baby heirloom tomatoes. 7. Toss salad mix with dressing to coat well. Add the crumbled bacon and croutons. Drizzle additional dressing on top and serve!
FOR THE DRESSING: • 3 T mayo • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar • 1/2 tsp EVOO • small pinch lemon zest • salt and pepper to taste
Sweet white corn chowder 1. Preheat a large dutch oven or enameled cast-iron soup pot, melt 1T of butter and crisp bacon, chopped. Once bacon is crisp, remove from pot and drain on paper towels, setting aside for garnish. 2. Reserving bacon drippings, add chopped potato to pot and sauté on medium for about six minutes, stirring often. 3. Add onion, garlic, celery, carrot, salt, pepper and remaining 2 T butter. 4. Sauté while adding 1/2 cup of the chicken stock and a few thyme sprigs for about 10-15 minutes. Once mixture is tender, remove thyme sprigs, add corn kernels, chopped thyme, paprika, remainder of chicken stock and bring to a slow boil with lid on. 5. Once the mixture begins to boil, remove lid and reduce heat to low, continue to simmer for about 10 minutes, then add white wine. Remove the bay leaf. 6. Remove pot from heat and allow to cool, then slowly add some of the half-and-half and some cheese, return pot to low heat, stirring well (soup will begin to thicken). 7. Gradually add more half-andhalf, cheese, salt and pepper as desired. 8. Add the red wine vinegar if you feel a little acid is necessary. Continue to simmer on very low until ready to serve. Garnish with bacon and fresh thyme sprig.
• 7 ears fresh white corn, kernels cut off • 1 large baking potato, peeled and cubed • 1/2 large sweet white onion, chopped finely • 4 ribs celery, chopped finely • 4 large cloves garlic, chopped • 1-32 oz carton low-sodium chicken stock • 3 T butter • 1 bay leaf • 1/2 cup white wine • 3/4 cup fat free Half-andHalf • 7.5 oz sharp 4 cheese blend, shredded (or less if preferred) • 5 strips low-sodium bacon, for crisping, topping and reserving drippings • 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, chopped smaller • fresh thyme sprigs for garnish & sautéing • 1-2 tsp kosher salt (to taste) • 1-2 tsp coarse ground black pepper • 1/2 tsp paprika • 1/4 tsp red wine vinegar

Dragon dancers from the Lucky Lion dance group performed on the sidewalk outside Symphony Hall, welcoming guests to the San Diego Symphony’s Opus 2012 gala. The Chinese calendar says it’s 4710, and the Year of the Dragon. The event’s theme honored Chinese pianist Lang Lang, star performer in the classical concert at the celebration’s core. The New York Times called the flamboyant 30-year-old “the hottest artist on the classical music planet.” He currently resides in New York, but in his native China he’s considered a symbol of the youth and future of the country and an inspiration to the 40 million classical piano students there. Greatly talented, he performs with leading orchestras around the world. Jeanne Jones, Lael and Jay Kovtun, Don Breitenberg

Old Town’s Fiesta de Reyes hosts a free four-day celebration commemorating “Dia de los Muertos” from Nov.1 and 4 featuring live music, folklorico dance, face paintings, crafts for children and a tour of more than 15 altars. Between now and Sunday, Nov. 4, visitors to Fiesta de Reyes can see one of the most extensive Day of the Dead decor on display, including two 11-foot catrinas dressed as a bride and groom and five life-sized catrina skeletons. The altar also showcases two huge four-foot-tall calaveras (skulls), and a custom painted canvas depicting the Virgin of Guadalupe along with other traditional altar offerings. Not to be confused with Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to celebrate loved ones that have passed. The Fiesta de Reyes restaurants, Barra Barra Saloon and Casa de Reyes, will offer special Dia de los Muertos menu and specialty drinks featuring items such as enchiladas de pollo con mole poblano and sweet pineapple tamalito with cinnamon ice cream.Altars are on display in many of the stores at Fiesta de Reyes and the surrounding museums and state park shops. SOCIETY Since its 1910 inception, SDS has grown greatly in stature — it’s now a Tier One Orchestra, and truly one of America’s leading symphonies. The annual Opus galas are legendary, and guests know they can expect a “tierone” fun-filled evening. Mayor Jerry Sanders had issued a proclamation declaring the date San Diego Symphony Day, and he and his wife, Rana Sampson, were the event’s honorary chairs. Phyllis and Dave Snyder co-chaired the gala, along with Mitch Woodbury. The 260 guests arriving at Symphony Hall for the cocktail reception and pre-concert dinner ascended to the 34th floor University Club, where they found the Impromptu Quartet playing and waiters waiting with wines, champagne and trays of Asian-inspired hors d’oeuvres. Elegant models showed off striking Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry, and among many the tableaux of Chinese art and décor was a beautiful dragon ice sculpture. The seated dinner featured tender short ribs or roasted chicken, both with Asian sauces. Fish or vegetarian options were also available. Four interesting live auction packages were offered, the grandest being an “Ultimate Music Lovers’ London Getaway” for two, valued at $28,000. It included businessclass air, a 5-star hotel, tickets to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, dinner at the London home of SDS board member Penny Wing and more. Music aficionados virtually filled Symphony Hall for the concert. SDS CEO Ward Gill thanked the audience for their attendance, and Joan and Irwin Jacobs for their exceptional financial support. It’s unusual for symphony orchestras to avoid “running in the red,” but he proudly announced that SDS has now had a balanced budget for 14 consecutive years. He also announced that the orchestra will play in Carnegie Hall next October, and if the required corporate funding materializes, it will then embark on a multi-week performance tour of China. Both announcements drew cheers, but the biggest audience reaction came in response to the revelation that the restrooms had just been completely remodeled, doubling the number of stalls in the ladies rooms. The Steinway grand rose dramatically from under the stage for Lang Lang to play in the second half of the allTchaikovsky concert. The familiar Piano Concerto No. 1 was performed with consummate artistry; the pianist sometimes helped conduct parts of the orchestra with his left hand while playing with his right. Later, maestro Jahja Ling returned the favor by sitting next to Lang Lang for a lively and humorous closing duet, playing Brahms Hungarian Dance Number 5. The audience stood and applauded enthusiastically through multiple curtain calls, showing their appreciation for the entire program. An additional 175 guests, having purchased tickets for the performance and a post-concert soiree, joined the original revelers back up the University Club (which by now had been completely redecorated) for an energetic afterparty. Included in the group were members and guests of the “Symphony Sweethearts,” the brainchild of SDS board member Kathy Paulin who wanted to introduce more young professionals to the Symphony. Everyone enjoyed drinks, food, decadent desserts, and charity gaming, punctuated with dance and musical performances until midnight. When the numbers were added up a few days later, SDS reported that the event had raised well over half a million dollars.

Bistro Pazzo The whole idea of a bistro, says Seto Marselian, owner of Bistro Pazzo, is to offer a neighborhood place where everyone knows you - where great friends and great food meet. Bistro Pazzo is going on its 4th year, located just slightly off the beaten path, just off Prospect Street at 7930 Ivanhoe Ave - and the " hidden gem" nature of the eatery makes it just that much more of a neighborhood treasure. Within walking distance to shopping, hotels, the financial district, and the famous beaches of La Jolla. Open for Lunch and Dinner, Bistro Pazzo is definitely the "hidden gem" of La Jolla. Come enjoy this small neighborhood Italian bistro seven days a week. Moderate prices, great food, good portions, and a vast wine list with crazy service. You can be crazy too, no one will mind, Really! 858-456-4005 www.bistropazzo.com
