Wartime La Jolla revealed Holiday Heroes In anticipation of Pearl Harbor’s 70th anniversary, historical society opens exhibit on life in La Jolla during World War II

BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS he La Jolla Historical Society is readying itself for an exhibit that has never been done before — one catered specifically to the effects of World War II on La Jollans and bringing visitors back in time to discover the quaint village that had a life of its own during the 1940s. Archivist and curator Mike Mischler and his volunteer staff diligently uncovered little-known facts about La Jolla and its residents during the war for a one-of-a-kind exhibit, titled “Homefront La Jolla,” showcasing previously undocumented biographies, photos and war artifacts, which will be on display at Wisteria Cottage from Dec. 7 — the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor — through Memorial Day. Although the idea of a World War II exhibit had bounced around the historical society’s staff for several years, Mischer nailed down the concept two years ago when he stumbled upon the footlocker of Robert Larimer, a WWII veteran from La Jolla. He knew if there was a perfect

time for the exhibit, it was now. “We’re at the point now where it’s the 70th anniversary for Pearl Harbor and it’s almost impossible to get [interviews with] the people who were there,” said Mischler. Revisiting LJ Christmas parades past with the grand marshal BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The 54th annual La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival will transport holiday-spirited guests back in time with a flyover of antique aircraft, a display of numerous historic streetcars and dozens of handcrafted floats decorated with old-fashioned flair. June Barrymore Ash — a living legend in the La Jolla community — was the inspiration for putting “class” in this year’s “Classic Christmas” theme for her endless contributions to the village as well as reinvigorating the parade many years ago with her late husband, Bob Barrymore. Although she has driven classic cars in the parade in the past, this is the first year Barrymore Ash will be riding in her own car — either a 1958 Drophead Rolls-Royce or a newer Bentley Drophead — as grand marshal of the parade. Had it not been for Barrymore Ash, her late husband and their 15 classic Rolls-Royces, La Jolla’s annual holiday parade may never have re-emerged after the parade ended during the second World War. Approximately 35 years ago, Bob Barrymore — who was president of the La Jolla Historical Society at the time — was adamant about bringing the Christmas parade back to La Jolla. Despite insistence from others on the

board that it was much too late to begin planning for a December event (as it was already autumn), he forged on with his plans. “He proceeded to make sure that La Jolla had a Christmas parade,” Barrymore Ash said. “He contacted the fire department and I suppose the authorities to get permits, he put in about 15 of his classic cars and we had dignitaries, members of the town council, maybe some from the City Council and the ‘old time’ La Jollans in the parade.” The “old time” La Jollans, she said, were people who lived in La Jolla their whole life and loved every facet of it. “In the 35 years, it’s all changed, and the poor old-timers are no more. I think it ended with Ellen Revelle,” she said. “The old-timers were great people, had great stories to tell, and loved La Jolla — the magical La Jolla. So many of the old-timers rode in the parade.” The first parade, she said, after the gap many years ago was a brief one. There were no floats, no Christmas tree lighting and certainly no airplane flyover. She does recall music sounding from the high school marching band, but nothing like the multiple bands that will play at the La Jolla Recreation Center in this year’s parade. “The following year, it really did change. It’s grown immensely — just like La Jolla.” Barrymore Ash said she is honored and excited to lead the parade as its grand marshal this year. Likewise, the parade’s committee lauds they are equally honored and excited to have her as Grand Marshal, and for good reason. In addition to revitalizing the parade, which may never have come to fruition without her and her late husband’s committed efforts, Barrymore Ash has contributed to a vast number of causes in the La Jolla community throughout

the years. She has served as the president of the Social Service League of La Jolla, Patrons of the Prado, La Jolla Debutante Committee and acted as founding president of the Variety Club International San Diego Chapter of Women. She has acted as the chairwoman for events like the Country Friends fashion shows and annual Christmas tea, La Jolla Debutante Ball, American Cancer Society Council of Hope, Concours d’Elegance luncheons and fashion shows for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association. For her leadership and volunteer roles, she has received a number of awards, including the American Cancer Society’s Volunteer of the Year, the Women’s International Center’s International Philanthropy Award, Salvation Army’s Women of Dedication

award, and serves as an Honorary Director at the La Jolla Historical Society. “I didn’t have children, and I love La Jolla. One thing would lead to another, and I just got so totally involved, and I loved every minute of it,” she said. “All those things I was doing, it never stopped me from traveling or doing what I wanted to do. I never thought of it as a big deal.” She said over the years, she has relinquished many of her duties and titles to others. “I gave up my last organization about eight months ago as honorary chairperson of the Patrons in the Park,” she said. Spence Wilson, former manager of The Cove Theatre and longtime La Jollan, died on Thanksgiving morning. He was 99. Born in Randsburg, Calif., Wilson traveled to La Jolla often to visit his uncle, later relocating here permanently. When he was about 8 years old, he was hired as an extra in a few Will Rogers, Sr.’s films. Spence began working at the Granada Theatre in 1929 while a sophomore at La Jolla High School. He graduated from LJHS in 1931 and managed the Granada and then the Cove Theatre from 1929 until his retirement in 1989 after 60 years of managing La Jolla theaters. He served in the Navy during World War II. An integral part of the community for several generations, Wilson counseled

many generations of children, teaching “theater manners” and helping many with life’s lessons. Many adults have told him they give him credit for helping them to “get it together” when they were young. A member of the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla since May 1937, Wilson had perfect attendance and been at almost every event and fundraiser for the past 74 years. He got to know nature photographer and art gallery owner Tom Mangelsen. He worked at the gallery seven days a week and got great joy going on several photo safaris with Mangelsen, doing the only traveling he did in his life. Wilson lived at the White Sands of La Jolla for several years. He will be missed by many members of this community.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds will give San Diego shoppers a chance to get a headstart on holiday shopping with the second annual San Diego Holiday Art Festival, starting Friday, Dec. 2 and running through Dec. 4 at the fairgrounds’ Exhibit Hall. The gift of the Magi: a life lesson for 2011 Sandy Lippe O. Henry’s famous story “The Gift of the Magi,” written in 1906, should be mandatory reading for the new shopper out on Thanksgiving among the pepper-spraying con$umers and the gun-toting $hoppers. O. Henry wrote about a young, working-class couple, who had no extra money for Christmas presents after a big pay-cut eats into their income. Each was unselfish: Jim Young sold his gold watch from his grandfather to buy combs for wife Della’s beautiful, long chestnut hair. In turn, Della sold her hair to a wig maker to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. O. Henry made the connection to the Magi, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to baby Jesus. Is this life lesson at Christmas lost on the hardcore consumers who ran out before the turkey had cooled on Thanksgiving Day? Is it lost on the shoppers who lined up a day before Thanksgiving to be first in the door, or on the media, driven by the need to convince the public that Thanksgiving tradition is dead and consumerism is to be celebrated? It seems Thanksgiving may simply be a dress rehearsal for Chri$tmas. It appears today’s consumer has sold his soul. The headlines on Cyber Monday after a wild Thanksgiving Thursday and Black Friday point out the success of breaking tradition on Thanksgiving with early store openings rather than breaking a wishbone in a warm home. At the risk of becoming a Scrooge, I shake my head in disbelief at 2011 when a torrent of shoppers headed out early on Thanksgiving rather than enjoying the traditional American holiday featuring family and food. Still, there are tales of O. Henry whispered by people feeling the pain of the stinging economy. One woman, for example, shared her

holiday story. While visiting a stepson in Northern California, she and her husband brought her husband’s son a beautiful basket that he had admired years before in the Museum of Northern Arizona. He had fallen on hard financial times, as had she and many other people. To keep the wolf from the door, as the saying goes, she prepared to sell her mother’s diamond ring, passed down to her through generations. She had come to terms with her choice, thinking of how the Great Depression had impacted her mother’s generation in much the same way. Both husband and wife had a conversation with their adult daughter about giving things away to make room for new gifts. Later that night, her husband said he had received a call from their other daughter. She had called the jewelry store and asked them to hold the ring. She gave her mother the money needed to keep the ring, so she could hold on to her family heirloom. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Regulations signal an attack on childhood Dear editor, I am a longtime resident of La Jolla. All of a sudden last weekend, two signs went up at the cove that said children (or anyone else for that matter) cannot climb on the trees anymore. There is no code reference on the signs — just plain white signs. I think it is important to point out that my grandfather climbed on these trees at the cove when he was a young boy. My mother climbed on the trees at the cove when she was young, as did I. Now, my children have been banned. What a tragedy! Children have been climbing on these trees for a hundred years and without any damage to the trees or to themselves (other than a few occasional scrapes here and there). The war on childhood has now extended to one of our most cherished La Jolla memories. Is there no end to the political

correctness of our time? First, we made it practically impossible for children to use The Children’s Pool as our rapidly declining legal system acted contrary to the clearest possible existing laws and trust indentures. Now are we going to take one of the last remaining pleasures from our children and grandchildren and our own enjoyment at their delight in accomplishing the not-soformidable task of getting to the next branch? NEWS LJ Art Association teams up to ‘free the girls’ BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS The La Jolla Art Association (LJAA) and Soroptimists International of La Jolla are joining forces and using the power of art to help combat human trafficking and enslavement of young girls and women right in San Diego’s backyard. LJAA vice president Judy Judy Judy said she was so impressed with the way the Soroptimists helped the community — particularly women in need — at a recent fundraising event that she asked them to team up with the art association for their annual community outreach program. “The mission of the LJAA is to promote the arts through education and outreach,” she said. “Since we are all nonprofit organizations, I thought this would be a good way to help those in need right here in San Diego.” The local art association and volunteer women’s group will host a special art exhibit and benefit reception entitled “Help Us Free The Girls” to raise funds for the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition (BSCC), an alliance of U.S. and Latin American government and nonprofit agencies working to prevent and intervene in commercial and sexual exploitation of men, women and children on both sides of the border. More than 60 local artists will donate their time, artistic efforts and 50 percent of their profits to benefit the LJAA and BSCC in an exhibit that will be on display at the LJAA gallery, located at 8100 Paseo del Ocaso, from Dec. 5 to 18. “These are some of the finest award-winning artists in San Diego,” said Judy. “The art will be stimulating, exciting and provocative oil paintings, watercolor, photography, pen and ink drawings and wearable silk.” Guests will have a chance to meet the artists and executive director of

Dana Levine’s photo, “Looking at Life,” will be showcased at the La Jolla Art Association’s benefit reception, “Help Us Free the Girls,” which will raise funds to combat human trafficking.

BSCC, Marisa Ugarte, during a special wine and hors d’oeuvres reception on Dec. 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Half of the proceeds from the artwork sold will benefit the artist, while 25 percent will benefit the LJAA for operational costs of running the nonprofit organization and gallery, and 25 percent of the proceeds will go to the BSCC for initiatives including emergency response services, longterm case management, mental health services, legal advocacy, immigration relief, identifying victims of human trafficking, rescuing minors from sexual exploitation and providing health services to victims of trafficking. mother whose husband was overseas.” Volunteers for the society’s Oral History Program set off on the arduous task of identifying people who lived in La Jolla during those years. The volunteers found more than 20 people, but that was just the first step in an abundance of research that was to be conducted over the course of the year. To help with the daunting task, Mischler enlisted the aid of local high school students to conduct interviews with people who lived in La Jolla during World War II. “It’s been fun because the students ask questions you wouldn’t normally think of. They have a very different perspective,” he said. “They asked a lot of questions about high school — what was school like, what did they do for fun, things like that.” Students also asked what people were doing when they heard about the Pearl Harbor attack, what kind of music they listened to, whether Hispanics or blacks felt marginalized in La Jolla at that time and whether or not they knew any Japanese who were taken away to internment camps. In one particular interview, La Jolla High School student Ana Olevsky interviewed World War II veteran Don Schutte, who was taken as a prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. During the interview, Schutte showed her his collection of writings and pamphlets from the war — one of which was written entirely in Russian. Although he saved it for all this time, he had never been able to trans-

late it — but Olevsky could. For the first time, Schutte was able to understand the words on the pamphlet that he had held on to for so long, making the interview well worth it for both parties. In addition to profiling the experience of veterans like Schutte, the exhibit will feature documents, histories and artifacts that illustrate the lives of La Jolla residents and workers, the Japanese who were sent to internment camps and La Jolla’s contribution to the war effort. One such homefront contribution that will be showcased is a display of shell casings from a well-known — but sparsely documented — military base in Bird Rock. La Jollans often talk about Camp Callan, Camp Matthews and the bunkers at Mt. Soledad, but they rarely speak about the base that was loosely dubbed the Naval Anti-Aircraft Training Center Bird Rock — or Pacific Beach, “depending on who you ask,” said Mischler.

Even the newspapers — which were mum on the subject until the site was about to close in 1945 — referred to the base as being in Bird Rock one day and in Pacific Beach the next. “I thought someone was pulling my leg,” Mischler said when he heard about the base. “When you try to find anything about it, you only get stories from people who know about it.” Mischler discovered that the base served as a naval training center site where sailors would take a six-day course on anti-aircraft artillery. “People talked about the guns going off constantly and the houses getting cracks in them,” he said. “It was only open from 1942 to 1945, but they trained about 300,000 sailors to shoot down aircraft during the course of the war.” Many more previously unexplained facts about La Jolla during the war will be unveiled in “Homefront La Jolla,” at 780 Prospect St. For more information, call (858) 459-5335 or visit www.lajollahistory.org.

Irving Stanton Elman, celebrated writer and producer Irving Elman, a 46-year resident of Pacific Palisades and five-year resident of San Diego, passed away on Nov. 22 at the White Sands of La Jolla of cardio-pulmonary arrest. He was 96. Born June 28, 1915 in Paterson, N.J., Elman’s career spanned the dramatic arts, from Broadway playwright to Hollywood movie-and-television writer and producer. He authored three Broadway plays (“The Brass Ring,” “Uncle Willie” and “The First Million”), 10 plays and four musicals produced offBroadway and elsewhere in New York and other stages worldwide, as well as eight majorstudio movies (“Backlash,” “Strange Journey,” “The Crimson Key,” “Challenge,” “Roses are Red,” “Thirteen Lead Soldiers,” “Jewels of Brandenberg” and “Accomplice”). He was a television writer from the early days of live television until the late 1980s. He wrote more

than 2,000 produced teleplays, ranging across a broad spectrum of genres, including Hallmark Hall of Fame, Studio One, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Brothers Brannagan, The Verdict is Yours and The Eleventh Hour, among many others. With his wife Tex, he was head writer of the daytime television serials “Search for Tomorrow” and “General Hospital.” He and his wife are credited with creating the “General Hospital” character Luke (of “Luke and Laura”) and reviving what had been a flagging series. Elman also produced five television series (“Ben Casey,” “High Chaparral,” “Slattery’s People,” “The Eleventh Hour” and “Matt Lincoln”) and two television movies (“The Cliffdwellers” and “Roaring Camp”). In his later years, he authored and published five books (“So You Want to be a Scriptwriter and Make a

Million Dollars?,” “Abe Lincoln’s Doctor’s Dog,” “Bells on Her Toes,” “A Tango in Time” and “Sherlock Holmes: The Naked Truth”). Over the course of his career, Elman was honored as a Pulitzer Prize play finalist, received two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe Award and the Alexander Graham Bell Award. After the death of his beloved wife, Tex, in 2006, Elman lived his later years in San Diego. He is survived by sons Jeffrey of San Diego and his partner, Ray; and Corey of Long Beach; and by his grandchildren Emily of Portland, her husband Nate and children Stella and Oliver; and Jeremy of San Francisco and his wife Erin. In lieu of flowers, contributions to San Diego Hospice or White Sands of La Jolla are suggested.

Grand Marshal When the city of San Diego needed to host a luncheon for 92 foreign ambassadors during the 1998 Republican Convention, they called June Ash. That even was just one in a long list of community, military, and charitable events that June – with her husband Neil – has spearheaded. The term ‘Renaissance Woman’ was likely created to describe June Barrymore Ash. Her wanderlust began early, with June attending schools in Washington, D.C., Dallas, and Southern California – including Hollywood High, before moving on to UCLA. Embracing community service and energetic commitment, June has been the go-to person for numerous groups, and has served as president for many, including the Social Service League of La Jolla, Patrons of the Prado, La Jolla Debutante Committee and Founding President of the Variety Club International San Diego Chapter of Women. June has served as chair for a number of events including Country Friends Annual Christmas Tea and Fashion Shows, Debutant Ball, American Cancer Society Council of Hope, Concourse d’Elegance Luncheons and San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association fashion shows and countless other events. Military Marshal Born in Los Angeles, with less than two years of college and four months at Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School, Cornell University, he was commissioned in January 1945 as an Ensign, USNR, followed by sea duty in the Pacific, from the Solomon Islands to the Philippines. After the war, he returned to his home in the Los Angeles area and was placed on inactive duty in the Naval Reserve. After one year as an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, Neil entered its law school under a special program for returning veterans, graduating in 1950 with his law degree. Three days after passing the California State Bar Exam, he was recalled to active duty as a Naval Reserve officer for two years during the Korean War, with sea duty in the Atlantic and Arctic and service as Assistant Legal Officer, Naval Air Station, and Corpus Christi, Texas. Soon after returning to civilian life, Neil’s business career was highlighted by 34 years with Signal Companies, Inc. (Signal), which when he was employed and many years thereafter was known as Signal Oil and Gas Company. With its acquisition of several companies, some of which were not in the petroleum industry, its name changed to Signal Companies, Inc. The company was

well received and topped off by its acquisition of Mac Trucks. Before and after the name change, Neil’s career with Signal was diversified – five years if residence in Brussels and Paris as Coordinator of its European petroleum operations; service as a member of the board of directors of some of Signal’s wholly-owned subsidiaries and some of its affiliate companies, including American Independent Oil Company, and American President Lines. Five years before his retirement from Signal, Neil’s residency came south when Signal moved its headquarters from Beverly Hills to San Diego, becoming the largest company headquartered in the county. Continuing his support of non-profit organizations, he served as chairman, board regents, Concordia University, Irvine, as a member of several San Diego organizations: Museum of Art, Symphony Orchestra Association, and as an advisory board director of Scripps Memorial Hospital and Scripps Clinic, and Green Hospital. With his appreciation for the men and women serving in our armed forces, Neil served for 10 years on the World Board of USO Governors, and then located in Washington, D.C., and after coming to San Diego, served on the board of directors of the San Diego USO, and not long thereafter as its president. His determined leadership led to the establishment of the “Neil Ash USO Airport Center” at the San Diego International Airport, the largest USO Airport Center in the world. It serves annually over 120,000 members of our Armed Forces, including their dependents, gratuitously providing them with food, telephone and computer services, entertainment and a variety of other services. Having financial support from city residents and companies in San Diego County and the welcomed enthusiastic support of its many volunteers, the San Diego USO is pleased to promote our military’s awareness that the worldwide USO provides them with their “Home away from home.” Neil and his dear wife reside in Rancho Santa Fe.

Margaret Loretta, in 1973, the same year he began working at the Ascot Shop. While working at the store, Bill earned his Bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Diego State University in 1975. Throughout his early years at the Ascot Shop, the founder of the store, Jack Matzinger saw in Bill an engaging personality, astute business sense and a hard work ethic. The idea of owning his own business appealed greatly to Bill and he officially purchased the shop from Jack in the 1990’s. Shortly thereafter Bill hired renowned La Jolla architect Robert Mosier and together they oversaw a complete remodel and update of the store in 2000. Bill and Loretta, his wife of almost

Ron Roberts 40 years, have four children, Alysson, Andrew, Angela and Ashley. They are all involved in various aspects of the store and Bill is proud to have them as part of the Ascot Shop team. Bill is very involved in the community and has a big philanthropic heart. With education being one of his big passions, he served as president of the school board and PTG president at St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Some of the schools he currently supports include La Jolla High School, Bishops School, Cathedral Catholic High School, La Jolla Country Day School, Stella Maris Academy, Nativity Prep School and St. Vincent de Paul School, to name a few. With physical fitness being important to Bill, has also been involved in children’s athletics, including coaching for boys football and girls and boys’ basketball

As president of the Ascot Shop, Bill has been involved in a vast array of local and national charities, including support of Las Patronas, The La Jolla Historical Society, The Rotary Club, USO, YMCA, the Jewish Community Center and The Cystic Fybrosis Foundation. He served as a member of the San Diego Rotary Club for many years. In his spare time, Bill is an avid cycler. He can be found logging in 50 miles or more on his bike on a Sunday morning. He is also a skilled hiker, going on weeklong backpack trips every year with his son, Andy, in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Bill enjoys spending time with his family and looks forward to the vacations he takes them on every summer in his beautiful home state of Minnesota. Getting back to nature and enjoying the simple pleasures in life are important to him. Bill also relishes in time spent with his three grandchildren, who will be accompanying him in the car during the parade, and is excited to welcome a fourth grandchild this spring!

Born at Scripps Hospital La Jolla 1949, the same year that Meanley & Son Hardware opened on Girard Avenue. He spent the first 8 years of life on Westbourne Street next to the Wind and Sea, graduated high school in 1967, spent two years at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, a semester at Colorado State University, then spent the winter in Aspen Colo. Bob had so much fun in Aspen it took 10 years to get back to school. In 1971, Bob married Meg Flynn, a beautiful feisty Irish girl from Boston, Mass. They recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. Bob graduated with a degree in motion picture and television production from Brooks Institute of Photography in 1982 and worked for 3 years in television, behind the camera, writing, directing and producing commercials for local television. In 1987, after brother Bill set sail for the South Pacific, Bob took over the management of Meanley & Son Hardware, and with the exception of a two year leave, has been there ever since. Bob and Meg have one son who graduated from The Bishops School in 2008 and received the National AP Scholar Award. He graduates this May from Lewis & Clark College and plans to join the family business.

BY BART MENDOZA | VILLAGE NEWS La Jolla’s Athenaeum is more than just one of the finest locations to experience music. A nonprofit membership library devoted exclusively to music and art, the institution is a cultural beacon in San Diego, promoting classical and jazz events at its La Jolla location, as well as at venues around town. Notably, the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts offers classes in University Heights as well, featuring the occasional music event. On Dec. 2, The Peter Sprague String Consort will perform at the intimate art studio. The seven-piece combo is essentially the mix of a piano jazz trio, a classical string quartet and a jazz trio with Brazilian samba and jazz swing influences. An all-star gathering of musicians, including guitarist and composer Sprague, bassist Bob Magnusson, drummer Duncan Moore, violinists Bridget Dolkas and Jeanne Skrocki, violist Pam Jacobson and cellist Carter Dewberry, the group will perform the world premiere of Sprague’s original composition, “Dr. Einstein’s Spin,” commissioned by Chamber Music America as part of their New Jazz Works program. “Dr. Einstein’s Spin” is played in three movements, with a musical storyline concerning Albert Einstein’s thoughts as he made his calculations about the universe and the world around us. The original music will be augmented by material from Chick Corea and a new arrangement

of Bach’s Prelude No. 9. Sprague is without a doubt one of the finest guitarists to emerge from San Diego over the last 30 years. Although best known for his jazz work, he’s a virtuoso in just about every genre, a highly respected producer and engineer and the owner of esteemed studio Spragueland. His current discography stands at more than 300 releases, including work with dozens of artists ranging from bluegrass favorite Sean Watkins to up-andcoming instrumental jazz duo Mattson 2. It would be a rare moment that Sprague is not making music. Speaking by phone from his Del Mar home only hours after returning from a seven-date tour of Japan with jazz legend Dianne Reeves, he was already preparing to head out within the hour for a new project in Los Angeles. His enthusiasm for the project is contagious. “I’ve always had an interest in lots of different kinds of bands,” he said. “But my inspiration for this was that I saw Chick Corea in the mid-1980s, where he had a band like this — a string quartet, piano and they had Gary Burton on vibes. I was just intrigued by it. Way back then, I did a version of this band for a couple of years and time lapsed, but then four years ago, I wrote some new music and organized the group again.” To date, the group has released one album, “The Wild Blue” (2009), with work on a second already under way.

While he enjoys playing with his regular solo and group gigs, he holds this band as special. “The string quartet is a really interesting sort of animal in that it’s self-contained. with Vincent Andrunas The North Coast Rep (NCR), barely across La Jolla’s northern border and demonstrably one of our area’s top theaters, can certainly be said to have reached a significant level of maturity. On Nov. 18, it attracted a big crowd for its 30th Anniversary Season Celebration, which began with wines and a catered buffet reception, right there at the Rep’s facility in nearby Solana Beach. After guests had enjoyed an hourlong interval devoted to enjoying significant edibles and drinkables, they took their seats in the intimate 194seat theater. Board President Dr. Allen Moffson asked them to take out their cell phones, but instead of admonish-

ing them to turn the devices off, he requested that they text a friend and tell them where they were — and then, during intermission, to text their friends again to say what a great time they were having. What a stroke of marketing genius! Of course, he knew they’d be having a great time, because the evening’s entertainment was a performance of A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated “Love Letters,” performed by none other than David Ellenstein (finishing his ninth year as NCR’s artistic director) and his lovely wife, actress Denise Young. The play is a two-character reading of notes, letters and cards discussing the pair’s hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats throughout their close yet separate lives, covering nearly 50 years. Interestingly, author Gurney stipulates there be no more than two rehearsals and that a duo perform the play not more than twice. Unusual, yes — but it’s a thoughtful plan, producing a play that reads naturally and is never unrealistically formal. Immediately following the play (and its spontaneous standing ovation), technical director and set designer Marty Burnett was honored for his 20 years of stellar service to NCR. He was presented with a digital photo frame containing pictures of most of the sets he designed. Longtime Rep activists Julie and Jay Sarno (who were married on NCR’s stage) then introduced actress Wendy Cullum, who read a presentation she’d written in rhyming

The occasion was the university’s Nov. 19 Founders’ Dinner, which honored Richard and Rita Atkinson; the late John Davies and his wife, Ann; Sheldon and Susan Engelhorn; the late Anne Ratner; and L.S. and Aline Skaggs. Each was to receive the Chancellor’s Medal for exceptional service in support of the university’s mission. The evening opened with a reception in an outer part of the arena decorated with large hanging fabric rectangles and tall live trees. Huge pictures depicted views of the university’s facilities, including Scripps Pier and the eucalyptus grove (a mandated feature of every UC school campus). A classical acoustic guitarist played, and Culinary Concepts catered the reception, providing creative hors d’oeuvres and exceptional service. As the reception concluded, UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox addressed the guests and welcomed them into the arena for the rest of the event, which was not open to the press.
