fully realized production is the thesis project of Adam Arlan, who completes his MFA in March. Arlan’s creative team, whose work is also astonishing, comprises MFA students Alicia Peterson Baskel (choreography), Alina Bokovikova (costumes), James Tan (lighting) and Ian Wallace (scenic). “Camino Real” plays upon Wallace’s sprawling, Hispanicflavored town square. The action, set in an unspecified time, concerns an American visitor named Kilroy (appealing naïf Patrick Riley), who stumbles upon the scene and then tries to escape, aided by Casanova (Hugo Medina) and

Junior linebacker-tight end Mical Bailey had three quarterback sacks and a pass deflection and the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) football team shut out the Tri-City Christian Eagles (8-3-1), 56-0, in the quarterfinals of the San Diego Section’s CIF Division V Playoffs at Country Day last Friday, Nov. 27. The Torreys (10-1) got on the scoreboard on the first play of the game when senior wide receiverlinebacker Connor Gerhart (five catches, 154 yards, two TDs, one blocked punt, one fumble recovery) gathered in a pass from Ruben Pena for a 70-yard touchdown. That gave LJCD an early 7-0 lead with 11:38 left in the first quarter. “Ruben’s a player,” Torreys coach Jeff Hutzler said. “He loves to play.” Montell Allen (16 carries, 119 yards, three TDs) can also play a little. On Country Day’s second possession of the contest, Allen (two tackles, nine assists on defense), a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior running backlinebacker, hit paydirt and rumbled in for a 10-yard touchdown run. The drive covered 64 yards and advanced the LJCD advantage to 14-0 with 4:53 remaining in the first period. “Montell had a heck of a game on both sides of the ball,” Hutzler said. As did Pena. On Country Day’s third possession of the contest, Pena, a junior, called his own number on a quarterback keeper. The end result was Pena ending up in the end zone on a 36-yard touchdown run to extend the Torrey edge to 21-0 with 3:03 left in the first quarter. “We responded well,” Hutzler said. “The last time we played Tri-City Christian (a 44-21 win) in October, it was only a six-point game after two periods.” This time, after another touchdown run by Allen (two yards) and touchdown passes by Pena to Gerhart (32 yards), Bailey (24 yards) and freshman wide receiver-defensive back Sage Burmeister (12 yards) in the second quarter, the Country Day cushion was 49-0 heading into the locker room at halftime. “Our guys showed a lot of determination,” Hutzler said. “They played hard and smart. I’m proud of them.” After the intermission, it was more of the same as Allen added another touchdown run (nine yards) with 3:10

The La Jolla Christmas Parade is being thwarted this year by a bitter green gremlin who despises the cheeriness of the village people. The Grinch will ride into town on an antique truck for the annual parade on Sunday, Dec. 6, starting at 2 p.m. The Old Globe is loaning the Grinch to the parade since the theater is staging Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” through Dec. 27. The parade is pulling from all corners of the community. The Montessori School of La Jolla is sending two horse-drawn wagons. The La Jolla Country Day Madrigals ensemble will sing along the route. The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club will arrive on fire engines. The Antique Aircraft Association will fly its planes overhead. In keeping with the theme of the parade — “Through the Eyes of a Child” — Michael Glancy is piling his float with giant bears, seahorses and seals. Glancy, who owns Erling Rohde Plumbing on La Jolla Boulevard, is marking his 26th year in the parade and his family’s 99th year in business. The Christmas tree lights will be turned on at 4:30 p.m., and Santa Claus will pose for photos at the subsequent holiday festival, which includes caroling and games, held at the La Jolla Recreation Center, 615 Prospect St. Food will not be served this year. The La Jolla Town Council is hosting the parade, which is an all-volunteer event that costs between SEE PARADE, Page 5

Patrick Riley is Kilroy, a visitor to “Camino Real,” through Dec. 5 at the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre.

The title of Tennessee Williams’ 1953 play, “Camino Real” (produced through 8 p.m. Saturday by the UC San Diego department of theater and dance) means the royal road, or the imperial highway. Williams, who insisted the title be pronounced “Cámino Réal,” took a flyer from his forte, southern gothic reality, with this leap into the surreal, written between “The Rose Tattoo” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Set in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic town square, “Camino Real” pretty much bombed in its initial produc-

tion at the National Theatre on Broadway, playing only 60 performances, including previews. In a 1970 revival at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, it played even fewer performances. Today its performance is largely in the realm of universities. The UCSD production features 25 student actors, 14 of them MFA candidates. The production of “Camino Real,” one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of the theatrical year in San Diego, is not to be missed by theater lovers and those longing to see the other side of one of America’s great playwrights. The jaw-dropping,

Part IV in a holiday series Remember Christmas morning when you were a child? Santa Claus was the most fantastical person, honored with cookies and milk (and veggies for his reindeer) and then awoke to a living room full of brightly colored packages. That one morning of bliss is preceded and followed by weeklong celebrations that tend to encompass more of a cultural focus. Hannukah — commemorating the re-dedication of the Holy Temple — begins the evening of Dec. 11 this year and lasts for eight days. Kwanzaa, a celebration to honor African culture and heritage, begins on Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 1. For whichever celebration occurs in your house, children will show a twinkle in their eyes as they partake in a magical, spiritual or familial time that may contain a parcel or monetary gift. As the holidays loom, why not pop into a few toy stores with your children to see what really captures their eyes — and hands. Here are a couple of places in La Jolla worth checking out: Little Rocks Toy Store and Salon 5655 La Jolla Blvd., Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sun. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Children seem to enjoy the rhythm of a wooden push toy with three alligators that snap their jaws as you push (Chomp and Clack Alligator push toy, $50). Little Rocks sells wooden toys by Melissa and Doug for parents who wish to get away from all the plastic, including a wooden pizza party set to accompany a play kitchen. More educational toys in the store include the Eco Dome science kit — showing how the earth, light, plants and animals coexist — for ages 6 and older ($40). The neighboring boxes on the shelf are Uberstix kits to build sailboats and catapult devices using recycled bottles that are also capable of linking to Lego pieces for a bigger build. Apparently, girls ages 6 to 9 are thrilled by the Paw Parazzi characters, whose lives are glamorous — the stuffed animal comes with a career, a purse and a celebrity magazine ($20). For the creative child, there’s the Little Picasso Art Kit ($22) — a tool belt of art tools — to delve into. For the baby, the mosquito stuffed animal is charming with

tional, awe-inspiring experience for the holidays with admission fare that costs less than going to the cinema. “There’s Something About Seahorses” showcases more than a dozen species of seahorses and is one of seven exhibits currently on display. If you’re looking for a present, check out the aquarium’s bookstore — you may also find yourself browsing for your own gift. The aquarium sells T-shirts depicting the wild-looking creatures of the deep — some that glow in the dark — for $15. A visit to the aquarium is intellectually stimulating and so may be a good time to buy a scientific kit to learn how to build your own diving bell or bottle catamaran ($14) or peruse the book “Build Your Own Underwater Robot” ($20). Little trinkets include wooden sailboats for $4 or sea-animal flash cards for another learning experience. The “Kingdom of the Seahorse” DVD ($24) is a nice way to capitalize on the visit and keep the kids occupied. For a bedtime story, check out the book “What Color Would You Be In the Sea” ($19). The adorable baby bibs feature a crab and the words “crabby when hungry.”

Elizabeth Allen sells plush stuffed animals that are so colorful, cute and snuggly in their corduroy clothes they may entice adults to buy for themselves. The hippo costs $29 and the daddy and baby bear are $50. There are also round, soft, wool and felt purses for girls by En Gry e Sif’s for $26. Every year the parade honors La Jollans as marshals, but this year rings in a new tradition wherein each school nominated a student to be named a Youth Marshal. The principal at Bird Rock Elementary chose Dominick Wallace as its youth marshal because of his exemplary leadership skills. Wallace also helps students cross the street each morning and afternoon as part of the safety patrol. REFLECTIONS

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A time before traffic and parking problems BY CAROL OLTEN

a Jolla’s pioneer families took great pride in owning and operating automobiles, often photographing themselves in their Sunday best beside their cars as they posed for pictures en plein air by dusty roads and beaches. The archives of the La Jolla Historical Society are filled with such photos, primarily taken in the early 1900s as the automobile became more a part of everyday life. Starting Thursday, Dec. 3, a selection of these photographs reproduced from the originals will be on view in Wisteria Cottage, 780 Prospect St., as part of an exhibition titled “All Roads Lead to La Jolla.” It will be open Thursdays and Fridays through December and January coordinating with the Society’s presentation of the “Antique Motor Car Classic” at La Jolla Cove on the Jan. 9-10 weekend. The exhibit also will be open free to the public after the Christmas Parade Dec. 6. So what did La Jolla’s early cars look like and who were the proud drivers behind the wheel? The first car recorded on the streets was Lord Auberon Herbert’s “ horseless carriage” that arrived with the British aristocrat’s visit to the Green Dragon Colony in 1903. It caused a commotion as he drove it along Prospect Street, especially on one occasion when he tipped over with a lady passenger on board. Pioneer Frank Booth was actually the first La Jollan to own and drive a car here — a novelty vehicle of the early 1900s with high “buggy-type” wheels and hard tires. It was manufactured by International Harvester and Booth named it “the scissors grinder.” With the advent of Ford’s popular model T’s, cars became more prevalent on the dusty roads of La Jolla (serious paving was not undertaken until 1918). Anson and Nellie Mills became a familiar sight tooling around on afternoon drives along the beach. Squire Wilson and Willie Wetzell proudly posed for pho-

L

tographs in front of their fancy little motorcars. The Scripps ladies were an awesome sight in their fancy larger ones — Eliza Virginia driving herself in a grand old Packard and Ellen Browning being driven by British chauffeur Fred Higgins in her magnificent 1926 Rolls Royce (one of the phenomenal Silver Ghosts, which today is considered one of the most valuable collector cars with a value of $35 million). Although early cars in La Jolla take on an aura of the picturesque with their dressed-up passengers and antique mechanical designs, driving them on the dusty — or muddy — roads was often another matter. In the winter rains, the Biological Grade (now La Jolla Shores Drive past Scripps Institution of Oceanography) was usually impassable and horses and wagons stood by to pull drivers to safety. La Jollan Sibley Sellew recalled in an oral history in 1964: “The roads to town were, well, they were horse and buggy roads and if we got any rain at all we just couldn’t make it in a car.” Nonetheless, all roads did continue to lead to La Jolla, as new and improved paved streets and highways became the order of the day during the progressive years of the 1920s. In 1926, Muirlands developer Harold James Muir had an idyllic view of La Jolla as a place of beautiful homes in harmony with their owners’ “swift motors” in a landscape “as clear cut as a picture in a camera obscura — lovely homes above a curving shoreline, white roadways where swift motors pass and re-pass, but beyond all the eternal blue of the sea, both changeless and changeable.” Indeed, a different time — no parking problems or traffic! — “Reflections” is a monthly column written for the La Jolla Village News by the La Jolla Historical Society’s historian Carol Olten. The Society, dedicated to the preservation of La Jolla heritage, is located at 7846 Eads Ave.; open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon.-Fri. ■

Due to more shortfalls in the state budget, San Diego parents, schools and types of student learners are once again being pitted against each other to save specific programs and teachers. We are again facing increased class sizes (29 students even in grades K-3); half-day kindergarten; no more librarians or school nurses; no more music or sports.

There’s one fair solution that has been implemented in other cities and I believe is not getting enough consideration here: a district-wide shortening of the school year by 10 days next year (savings of $60 million). This way, all stakeholders share equitably in cost reductions while saving the jobs of our valued teachers, and keeping the critical services and programs our students deserve. It is, by far, the most fair and effective solution. All the people and programs remain in place when

Chargers stadium finance study needs rush BY RUBEN BARRALES

uilding a new San Diego Chargers stadium downtown could bring immense economic and civic opportunity to the East Village and the entire San Diego region. With this and the region’s best interests in mind, including keeping the Chargers here in San Diego, we must determine the financial viability of this site quickly. The financial viability study, which was recently approved by Centre City Development Corp. using money from its general fund, is a four to six month process that will help the city determine the financial ramifications of placing the stadium in the current bus yard for the Metropolitan Transit System, located east of Petco Park. The biggest hurdle for the potential stadium is how to finance the approximately $1 billion project, which further underscores the importance of expediting this financial review. Community leaders, including the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, are excited about

the prospect of a new stadium in one of our most prominent redevelopment areas. Turning the Metropolitan Transit System’s bus yard into a state-of-the-art stadium would be an effective catalyst to bolster redevelopment in East Village, but we must act quickly to ensure this feasibility. Dragging our feet on the opportunity to move the Chargers to the East Village will only open the window for municipalities outside of our region to throw their hat in the ring and woo the Chargers to other locations. Having a hometown NFL team can generate hundreds of millions of dollars per year for the local economy, and in order for San Diego to remain in the running, we must expedite this financial viability study as quickly as possible. While these possibilities are met with excitement by many of San Diego’s community leaders, the uncertainty of the proposed location is leaving many East Village property owners and residents nervous. The prospect of an unknown future for the area may cause anxiety among property

The story “Planners consider seal rope” in last week’s paper (Nov. 26, page 2) erroneously reported that the La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) voted in favor of a rope barrier at Children’s Pool to protect the resident harbor seals. The LJCPA actually voted 7-5-1 against permitting the city to set up a rope barrier to separate the seals from humans during pupping season, Dec. 15 to May 15. Trustees said the rope barrier is inconsistent with the La Jolla Plan to provide vertical access to the beach.

funds are once again available in the district. Should budgets shift for the better, days can be added back to the school calendar. Once programs are “zero-budgeted,” it’s unlikely we’ll ever see those services again. Let’s take a long-term view and stand as one community. Let’s support school board member John deBeck’s proposed furlough program and share equitably in this crises.

owners who may have difficulty leasing space, developers who may need to put pending projects on hold, and business owners that may face a myriad of unknowns, all of which would have a negative financial impact on the San Diego region. Reviewing the project in a timely manner will tell whether the benefits of a downtown stadium outweigh the risks. While a downtown football stadium could have a long-lasting positive impact on the East Village and the San Diego region, in the short term we need to focus on analyzing the financial possibilities of building on this site with an exceptional sense of urgency. The speed with which we conduct this study can have a significant impact on the businesses and residents of East Village and may very well determine San Diego’s ability to remain a viable home for the Chargers. — Ruben Barrales is the president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

LA JOLLA CHRISTMAS PARADE 52ND ANNUAL LA JOLLA CHRISTMAS PARADE & HOLIDAY FESTIVAL 8

THURSDAY · DECEMBER 3, 2009 LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS

“Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child” On the first Sunday of December, the La Jolla Christmas Parade lures 20,000 locals out of the hills and from the beaches to sit on the cement sidewalks of the village to watch a spectacular, homespun tradition unfold. Spreading cheer and the spirit of the season, this year’s parade, “Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child,” is scheduled for Sunday, December 6, beginning at 2 p.m. The parade and festival celebrates a 52-year tradition of the community’s participation, particularly of its youth. Every year the Cub Scouts of La Jolla carry the parade banners down Girard; Girl Scout troops march while offering their services to “litter patrol”; the Kids Corps volunteer to help on parade day while the schools encourage enthusiastic students who are interested in providing public service. In the selection of its Parade Marshals, the parade committee, chaired by Ann Kerr Bache,

emphasizes values of education, philanthropy, culture and service, while also honoring local citizens of achievement. Another 1,200 people from around San Diego will participate in the form of marching bands, ROTC units, drill teams, dancers, scout troops, float builders, equestrians, car aficionados, politicos, promoters and pranksters. Judges award prizes in various categories including Best Overall, Most Holiday Spirit, Most Original, Most Creative, Most Colorful, and Santa’s Favorite. Almost every elementary school in La Jolla has plans on the drawing board to build a float. This year’s grand marshal is longtime La Jolla resident Anne Otterson. A delight for the entire family, the Holiday Festival at the La Jolla Recreational Center begins at 3:30 p.m. with the traditional lighting ceremony of the Sunrise Rotary Christmas Tree at 4:30 p.m. For more about the La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival, visit ljparade.com.

Our Grand Marshal Our Grand Marshal this year is Anne Otterson, a longtime resident and major contributor to local and global causes. She has been a major sponsor of the Responsibility School led by David Lynch in Tijuana. It is a school built for children of families who live literally in the dump in Tijuana and provide for themselves by salvaging items from the dump. Through Anne’s support, classrooms, science and computer facilities have been built. The results are amazing and provide hope to the next generation who have worked hard at the school and are on their way to college. On a global basis, Anne works with Project Concern to improve the quality of life and future for many forgotten children in Africa. Project Concern International is a nonprofit, global health organization working in Asia, the Americas and Africa to bring better health and hope to children and families living in poverty. On her most recent trip to Zambia she was accompanied by several mother-and-daughter teams who were exposed for the first time to the realities and needs of the project. She hopes to spread her interest in helping others to the benefit of her favorite charities. Besides all her philanthropy, she is a fabulous cook; former head of the Magic Pan Cooking School and wellknown to many famous chefs (Julia Child, Jacques Pepin are just a few of the chefs who have cooked with her). She transformed her interest in cooking to establish a fundraiser for cancer research — another example of Anne’s generous spirit. Her work with the Responsibility School has spanned several decades, and through her support, David Lynch, director of the school, has been able to build facilities, hire staff and help families living in poverty educate their children for a better future. David will be riding with Anne in the parade representing the school, which is also known as the Blue Tarp School in Tijuana.

OUR YOUTH MARSHALS We have started a new tradition this year of Youth Marshals in the parade. In keeping with the theme, we are also honoring individuals who have started early giving back to the community. Our Goodwill Marshals are several longtime residents of La Jolla who have contributed in many ways to the community. Ginny and Aurelia Brown started teaching kids how to swim in their backyard pools — when the Y was started in La Jolla, they were asked to design an educational program which became the Tiny Tots program at the Y, still being used today. John and Virginia Andrews. John is a former insurance and real estate business owner, well known for his prize-winning orchids and his support of the Torrey Pines Golf Club. John will celebrate his 100th birthday in January and we all wish him many more. Bill Gibbs is an icon in the aviation community, having started his flying service in the late ’30s, in what is now known as Montgomery Field. He started teaching Air Force pilots to fly in the late ’30s and throughout World War II. Driving Bill will be Earl Van Weegan, retired Brigadier General and former Air Force pilot. Bill will also turn 100 next year and we wish him many happy returns.

Art and science collide at ‘Lapin Agile’ ROYAL BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE | VILLAGE NEWS

Comedian Steve Martin’s 1993 play “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” concerns a fictional 1904 meeting between the young Pablo Picasso and the young Albert Einstein, who were born in 1881 and 1879, respectively. The setting is a Parisian bistro. Each man was on the brink of personal change. The resulting innovations, artistic and scientific, would rock the 20th century. Martin’s other characters are Freddy and Germaine, the barkeep and his wife; a bar habitué named Gaston; three young women looking for love; an art dealer; a visitor from the future; and an inventor named Schmendiman, whose invention lets one know he’ll be consigned to the dustbin of history. “Picasso” is heady, extremely funny and droll, and a true joy to thinkers and humanitarians, scientists and lovers of art history. Distinguished and Exceptional People Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas A large crowd of people gathered at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park recently to recognize a longtime La Jolla resident. It was a perfect venue at which to honor Dr. William Frazer “Bill” McColl, because this man is truly a champ in so many ways. He’s a big man in our town — he was 6 feet 4 inches tall and 240 pounds in the 1950s when he was a twotime All American offensive end for Stanford, and later a tight end for the Chicago Bears. His impressive stature suggests that those statistics still apply today. But football is just one facet of this man — during his eight-year NFL career, he finished his medical degree and his orthopedic residency at the University of Chicago, and started his family with his wife, Barbara. In 1962, they gathered up their six children and went to South Korea as medical missionaries for two years. Returning to America, Bill established his medical practice, and in 1965 was honored by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the “Ten Outstanding Young Men of America.” Since then, he’s served in high positions on boards of public health organizations and academic institutions, and received numerous well-deserved accolades. But before all that, Bill was a Boy Scout of the highest order. He became not just an Eagle Scout, but a Distinguished Eagle Scout, and it was the Boy Scouts of America that honored him at their 2009 La Jolla Distinguished Citizen’s Dinner there in the Hall of Champions — into which Bill was inducted in 1956, and where

a large exhibit highlights his football career. The San Diego Air & Space Museum also hosted its 2009 gala recently, right there in that stunning Balboa Park museum with all those beautifully restored aircraft. The black tie optional event included the “Legends of Flight” induction ceremony, honoring the accomplishments of famed air and space pioneers. Honorees included the Navy’s Blue Angels, represented by their current leader, Cdr. Greg McWherter; Clay Lacy, pilot, air charter operator, and aerial videographer (rumored to have logged more flight time than anyone else in the world); the Lockheed brothers (and their famed “Skunk Works”); famous aerobatic pilot Sean Tucker; Robinson Helicopter Company founder and CEO Frank Robinson; and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), who flew military aircraft during World War II, represented by Vi Cowden and Pearl Judd. Also honored, but unable to attend, were America’s first woman in space, astronaut Sally Ride; and La Jolla’s own Cliff Robertson, Academy Award-winning actor and lifelong aviation ambassador. Guests mingled with the honorees during a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and a program in which a short video was shown of each honoree, and those present each gave a short talk revealing their exceptionally interesting lives.

December Nights gets ready to wow

PL cluster asks for school budget input BY ANTHONY GENTILE | VILLAGE NEWS

As the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) grapples with a deficit of up to $100 million, the Point Loma Cluster Schools Foundation (PLCSF) is asking to be a part of the school district budget discussion – and not just through a simple survey. The foundation of 10 local schools sent a letter to the district’s board of education Nov. 17 asking exactly that. As a result of the district’s deficit ballooning since cuts were first considered in June, district spokesman Jack Brandais said everything is on the table. Money-saving ideas mentioned in June included class size increases, mandatory district-wide four-day furloughs, reductions in salaries and a number of staff positions being eliminated. With all those things under consideration, PLSCF wants to have a voice as budget decisions are made for the 2010-11 school year. “Our cluster has been advocating for more control to the clusters, to the communities where the schools are at, because one size does not fit all,” said PLCSF president Christy Scadden. “We want to be able to sit

down and have a say, to have a seat at the decisionmaking table.” Scadden said the foundation would participate in the community-at-large survey presented by the district earlier this month. But she also said the survey alone is not a satisfactory solution. “We actually want to contribute and collaborate,” Scadden said. “We want to sit down at the table with the decision makers and look at possible solutions and how we can get more control for the clusters.” According to Scadden, the foundation does not believe making changes across the board within the SDUSD is the best decision. Foundation members think cuts should be tailored to individual schools and communities. “Things that some schools might choose as being important in their cluster might look different from one side of San Diego to another,” Scadden said. “It makes sense for communities to be able to decide what’s best for them.” School board member John de Beck — who repre-

Visitors will also be able to sample a wide selection of food throughout the park. Parking is available off-site, or there are free parking lots with free shuttle at San Diego City College and San Diego County Administration Building. Santa will appear at Spanish Village Art Center, the Organ Pavilion, San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist and the San Diego Automotive Museum. When tides ebb, go with the flow to a tide pool Bolts zap Chiefs, game up on Denver BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS

If the San Diego Chargers could play Kansas City 16 times a season, they probably wouldn’t mind it. After thrashing the Chiefs 37-7 earlier this season at Arrowhead Stadium, San Diego (8-3) did it again last weekend at home, rolling to a 43-14 victory over the hapless Chiefs. The win kept San Diego a game ahead of Denver in the AFC West, while the Chiefs fell to 3-8. Helped by four Kansas City turnovers, the Chargers took an early lead and never looked back, rolling to a 28-7 halftime lead. Kansas City QB Matt Cassel lost a pair of balls, including one fumble that safety Paul Oliver scooped up and raced 40 yards for

the score. “It bounced right to me,” Oliver said. “It was about as easy of a play as you can make.” As Oliver noted, the defense pretty much had its way with Cassel and the Chiefs for most of the afternoon. “We put the offense in good field position and really helped them out every way we could. It was a close game for the first half, but then the turnovers took over and we capitalized on all of them,” Oliver added. Meantime, running back LaDainian Tomlinson (12,257 career yards rushing) moved further up on the all-time rushing list and rushing TDs list, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Tomlinson is now the 10th leadSEE BOLTS, Page B·4

mals.” His portrayal of tide pool life, compared with more recent results from “trampling” studies (research into the negative impacts on tide pools from an abundance of sightseers and harvesters), highlights that this edge of the sea has been seriously depleted since Steinbeck’s day. Though marine life is now more limited, particularly on urban rocky beaches, interesting discoveries can still be made by those who are patient and focused. Here’s a sampling from my recent tide pool explorations.

SPORTS LJCD, Bishop’s advance in CIF football action BY DAVE THOMAS | VILLAGE NEWS

Both La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School and The Bishop’s School lived to play another day with wins last weekend in the CIF Division V football playoffs. LJCD (10-1) rolled to a 56-0 win over Tri-City Christian (see related story), thereby setting up a 7 p.m. showdown this Friday night with top-seeded Francis Parker in the semifinals. In the other Division V semifinal, it will be The Bishop’s School meeting Christian for the right to move on to the championship game. Bishop’s scored a 22-7 victory

four passes to help key the victory. In Division IV action last weekend, La Jolla High (5-7) saw its season come to an end with a 496 loss at Valley Center. La Jolla’s only points on the night came on a pair of field goals from Braden Fudge, who also caught three passes. “Valley Center was able to control the game with a powerful running game and effective passing,” La Jolla High head coach Rey Hernandez noted. “It was somewhat disappointing, but our players gave an honest effort in every game. Hopefully the underclassmen will use this season as a source of motivation for the 2010 season.” I

Finally, as the franchise’s greatest quarterbacks were honored before the game as part of the team’s 50 greatest players/coaches (Dan Fouts, John Hadl and Stan Humphries), current star Philip Rivers passed to tight end Antonio Gates for a pair of scores. On defense, Brandon Siler and Larry English recovered

fumbles, while cornerback Quentin Jammer forced a fumble and recorded an interception on the day. San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding even got in on the action, booting a 55-yard field goal in the third quarter, second-longest in team history to his 57-yarder in 2008. One of the few highlights on the day for the Chiefs was the play of former Chargers receiver Chris Chambers, who caught seven balls for 70 yards and a TD. San Diego hits the road for the next two weeks, beginning with a trip to Cleveland this Sunday afternoon.

sents the majority of schools in San Diego’s beach communities, including Ocean Beach and Point Loma — said he has read the PLCSF letter. He said he agrees with the foundation’s wishes, but explained the PLCSF could not participate in the district’s Budget Reduction Alternatives to Conserve Education (BRACE) committee. De Beck considers the idea of choosing a number of small-school programs to be cut as a form of canni-

balism. He wants to come up with a larger-scale solution to fight the mammoth budget problem. “If they [school foundations] want to say something, let them say something big instead of talking about which little thing we’re going to whittle away at,” de Beck said. “We need to propose something that makes everybody bear the burden.” De Beck’s wide-scale solution to solve the district’s budget crisis is furloughs throughout the school year. He said these periodic days off would save the district about $6

million per day. “I want to leave everything alone and just cut the days,” de Beck said. “That won’t mean any layoffs and that won’t mean we lose any talent.” Community members have a chance to provide input at town hall budget meetings. The meetings will be held Dec. 3 at San Diego High, Dec. 8 at Madison High. Dec. 9 at Mission Bay High and Dec. 14 at Porter Elementary North. Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. Our rehab services offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion (ROM) and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temperature • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases recovery time • Reduces post-exercise soreness • Provides good cross training for the competitive, athletic dog (619) 227-7802
