Koch first learned she could fuse her passions for surfing and helping others during her time there and later parlayed that desire into starting her nonprofit, Beyond the Surface International. BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS By the age of 19, Emi Koch had done more than many adults twice her age. For starters, Koch founded Beyond the Surface International when she was just a sophomore in college at Georgetown University. The nonprofit promotes and encourages — through financial funding, material donations and advocacy — other nonprofit programs throughout the world that use surfing as a tool to assimilate underprivileged, homeless, orphaned and at-risk youth into society, which, in turn, strengthens communities and promotes social justice and peace.

Throughout her life, the young philanthropist had no problem with her identity and knowing what she was passionate about. What she struggled with, however, was discovering a way to combine those passions in a meaningful, coherent way. “From a really early age, I wanted to become a professional surfer,” she said of her first passion. Koch’s father used to be a lifeguard at La Jolla Cove. Like father, like daughter, and when she caught her first wave at Hospitals — the break in front of the former Scripps Clinic — she was hooked. “To live the life of a pro surfer became my biggest dream ever —

traveling across the world, surfing in films and photo shoots and competing in world-renowned surf breaks,” she said. At the age of 13, she competed in local contests, earned her first sponsorship by a local surf shop in Pacific Beach, signed with a modeling agency and was even the first girl considered for the role of Bethany Hamilton in the film “Soul Surfer.” Just as her dream came closer to reality, a new passion swooped in and changed her life’s goals. “My whole perspective on life was changed in high school by a particular day in class,” she said. “I heard a statistic that if the world’s popula-

tion was comprised on a village of 100 people, only one out of that hundred would have a college education. That one statistic literally changed my whole outlook on how I wanted to live my life. If I had the opportunity to go to college, didn’t I owe it to the 99 other people in my metaphorical village to see to it that they got the same opportunity?” Immediately following the epiphany, Koch began to take advantage of local community service opportunities and became fervent about human rights. When she entered Georgetown University, she continued to pursue SEE HERO, Page 3

Many people around La Jolla may know Terry Sheldon as a Realtor, developer and president of T.L. Sheldon & Associates, but Sheldon also leads a double life: his alter ego is that of the author of “The 51st State: Panhandle,” “The Last Gas Station on Earth” and “Colt & Big Thunder.” Sheldon was inspired to begin writing after meeting Academy Award-nominated film director Oscar “Budd” Boetticher, best known for his late-1950s Western films starring Randolph Scott. “[He] was teaching me to ride his Andalusian stallion horses. He knew John Wayne and his stories were fascinating about the movie industry in the late 1950s and 1960s,” Sheldon said. “He had written a new screenplay that he was trying to sell to Hollywood, and after I read it I thought I’d write one too.” Sheldon said the first screenplay treatment he wrote was “Anaconda,” which was submitted by a friend to a SEE SHELDON, Page 5

‘Bark & Brew’ brings holidays to needy pets The holidays are a time for giving, and not just to our fellow humans. Creatures of all kinds — including the furry ones — deserve a little extra loving at this time of year. In that spirit, It’s the Pits Dog Rescue will host its second annual “Bark & Brew” event with live music by Eddie Grey, food, drinks and activities at the La Jolla Brew House, located at 7536 Fay Ave., on Dec. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. Santa will make an appearance for photo opportunities and holiday shopping will add to the merriment of the evening. Funds raised at the event will benefit Operation Puppy Love to pay for

shots, deworming, microchipping, spaying and neutering three recently rescued pit bulls and their 28 pups. Raffle tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased at www.itsthepits.org. The price for tickets is $5 for one, $20 for five, or $100 for 30. A LI FE LIVE D

Life of a salesman: my time spent with Bill Lance A reporter’s ‘true-life’ account of one of La Jolla’s own BY WALTER RUSKIN | VILLAGE NEWS The title “Death of a Salesman” conjures images of Willie Loman for many — a washed-up, unappreciated salesman who really never made it because he could not see the forest for the trees. This story, however, portrays a decidedly different character. This is the story of Bill Lance. Bill’s story began on Sept. 1, at some point in the 20th century. Bill was raised on a farm in the middle of Oregon, and as a youngster, he showed undeniable promise as a blacksmith’s apprentice. Legend has it Bill sold his first automobile when he was just a young boy. He noticed a farmer, for whom he was shoeing a horse, had an old, brokendown motorcar in his barn. After winning the car from the farmer in a bet, Bill fixed up that old motorcar and sold it to man who used it to transport medical supplies to sick people. Bill used the money to further his

education and went to Oregon State University. He played football there in 1941 and earned a chance to play in the Rose Bowl against Duke University in Pasadena that year. Unfortunately, following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, there was talk of canceling the game due to fear of another attack on the West Coast. Amid despair that their time in the spotlight would be snuffed out, Bill wondered aloud to teammate and AllAmerican Donald Durban, “Why don’t we play the game at Duke?” Perhaps God heard Bill, or perhaps He’s just a huge fan of the Beavers, because the very next day, Duke University invited Oregon to play the game there. As a side note, Durdan rushed for 54 yards for a touchdown and was named the game's most valuable player. This remains the only Beavers' Rose Bowl victory, and Duke University still has a rose garden commemorating the event. After World War II, Bill moved to La

Jolla, where he began to sell cars. He owned his own franchise dealership back then and even sold one of his first cars to Clark Gable. After about 15 years of successful business and family life, Bill’s first wife, Irma, (with whom he had two children), was diagnosed with cancer. Bill sold the dealership and traveled the world with her to help complete her bucket list. After her passing, Bill returned to San Diego. Years later, he met his second wife, Susan, and together they raised three children. Bill worked in San Diego selling Nissans for more than 30 years. I met Bill back in 2000, when I was a manager at Pacific Nissan. I asked him why he was still working at his esteemed age. He looked at me and said, “Walter, the only day a salesman is permitted to take a vacation is when God tells him to.” Bill Lance passed away at home on

coming decades to extreme weather events. Speakers will assess the risks California faces from sea-level rise, heatwaves, floods, drought and diminished snowfall among other climaterelated changes. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Scripps Seaside Forum Auditorium, 8610 Kennel Way. For more information or to register, visit sio.ucsd.edu/extreme_climate/.

Her love for the ocean, however, was still intense, so she took a year off school to consider professional surfing again. “I needed time to figure out how all this passion for so many different interests was going to play out in my life,” she said. Koch wasn’t the type, however, to twiddle her thumbs during her gap year. Instead, she trained dolphins and sea lions with the U.S. Navy’s marine mammal program in San Diego, then moved to Nepal to each English and art classes and live with Tibetan Buddhist monks. It was that summer that she learned about Skateistan, a nonprofit organization that fused the founders’ passions for skateboarding and helping children in Afghanistan. And it was then that the idea hit her. “I immediately thought I could take similar steps by combining my passion for surfing and human rights,” she said. “When I came home, I bought the ‘Nonprofit Kit for Dummies,’ and Beyond the Surface International was born.” Beyond the Surface International sponsors three global nonprofit organizations — Kovalam surf club in India, Umthombo in South Africa and Waves for Development in Peru. The overarching mission of all three nonprofits is to use surfing as a positive tool to motivate disenfranchised children in coastal communities to live a healthy lifestyle while avoiding nega-

BY MARIKO LAMB | VILLAGE NEWS • San Diego’s Park and Recreation Department has again filed for a permanent, year-round rope barrier at the Children’s Pool from the California Coastal Commission, which will review the application at its meeting in Los Angeles on Jan. 11. “This will essentially close the beach to all of humanity,” said Phyllis Minick, La Jolla Parks and Beaches member. “This is, of course against the law — federal law, city law, state law, the Coastal Act, California Act, the land-use laws in San Diego. Nevertheless, the city in the last two months has taken several actions to add to the closure of the beach.” She also reported the jurisdiction of the Children’s Pool area — which has bounced around from City Council to the courts and back — is now in the jurisdiction of the Coastal Commission, and a new ranger “with no job description” has been appointed in the area. She urged interested community members to write letters to the Coastal Commission before it reviews the application, attend the meeting with her in January, or discuss the issue at a special meeting at the La Jolla Recreation Center on Dec. 12. • Esther Viti announced the next Nell Carpenter Beautification Committee cleanup will take place on Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers can sign up in front of the Athenaeum, and all tools and equipment will be provided. “We have garbage bags, we have pickers, whatever it takes to get the job done,” she said. “All you have to do is bring your smiling face and

we’ll put you to work.” • Myrna Naegle sent a letter to the LJCPA thanking the trustees for honoring her late husband, Dale Naegle, who passed away on Nov. 14. In the letter, she quoted a friend of Naegle’s who said, “God received a real gift last night. I know Dale is already working on heaven’s layout. The blueprint of paradise is going to be just a little bit better.” • The LJCPA voted to ratify the appointment of Phil Merton as chairman, Mike Costello as vice chairman and Laura DuCharme Conboy, Joe LaCava, Tim Golba, Tony Crisafi, Mark Lyon, Rob Whittemore and Cindy Thorsen as members of the ad hoc committee on bylaws. Two recommendations made during the LJCPA’s August meeting from the previous ad hoc committee were referred to the newly appointed committee. • Erin Demorest, representative for District 1 City Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, announced the councilwoman’s ongoing “Pothole Roundup” initiative. Currently, construction is focused on the main streets in the district, and they hope to have the potholes filled before any winter storms. Demorest urged anyone who has potholes to report to call (619) 5277500 or visit apps.sandiego.gov/streetdiv. • The trustees approved a coastal development permit (CDP) and site development permit (SDP) for the Stedman Residence, located at 9030 La Jolla Shores Lane, as well as a CDP and SDP for the mixed-use building on 7401 La Jolla Blvd., and CDP and lot-line adjustment parcel map for the Weintraub lot line adjustment at 321 San Colla St. and

334 Ricardo Place. • The LJCPA approved a City Council draft policy that would establish a consistent practice throughout the city on soliciting community input through community planning groups on the installation, modification or removal of onstreet parking zones. The community planning group’s recommendation will be vetted by the city traffic engineer and considered by the appropriate decision-maker as an additional factor in granting, denying or modifying parking requests. • The LJCPA approved street closures and the use of Scripps Park for the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance (formerly the La Jolla Motor Car Classic), to be held on March 31 and April 1 next year. Trustees lauded the organizers for improving the world-class event year after year and tying in village merchants, residents and visitors. Some trustees suggested the organizers consider a comprehensive shuttle system with established pick-up locations for those who are handicapped or park far from the Scripps Park. • Trustee Joe LaCava introduced a citywide proposal regarding potential regulations and general-plan amendments to urban agriculture in San Diego. “This is the opportunity for La Jollans to weigh in on how we feel about the initiative,” he said. The issue, which affects daily, weekly and full-time farmers markets, retail farms, and chicken, goats and honeybees in single-family residential areas, will be taken up by the Planning Commission on Dec. 15. The City Council will hear the issue in January.

major production studio. Although the studio rejected his screenplay, he later read in the Los Angeles Times that the very same studio was making a film based upon an identical plot and characters — it even had the same title. “When I made threats of copyright theft, the studio changed the plot and characters and made a very successful movie. There was no copyrighting of a title,” he said. “After that disappointment, I chose to write books so that I could copyright the stories first by getting them out to the public.” Boetticher motivated Sheldon to keep writing, calling one of Sheldon’s screenplays, “the best story I’ve ever read.” “That really spurred me to continue writing because he had lots of experience and had been quite successful in his day with an Academy Award nomination for the screenplay he wrote and filmed called ‘The Bullfighter and the Lady’ with Robert Stack as the star,” Sheldon said. “Budd was my mentor and chief instigator.” Sheldon said although there is no real connection between his job as a Realtor and work as an author, he has drawn on his job expertise to write novels. “I will be writing a story about a recent legal matter I had to deal with where the amoral client totally cheated his real estate broker,” he said. “I’ve published lots of letters to editors and trade

pieces, so I’m known as a fluent and understandable writer. I honed some skills as a real estate developer, testifying before many government agencies, so you are forced to choose words and themes carefully so that you communicate your thoughts with an articulated purpose.” To become a novelist, one must possess the skills to verbalize coherently while also telling a captivating story, he said. “When you find you are understood and believed, then I think you can try to write a book, but they aren’t the same,” he said. “I’ve read books for others who want to get published, and while some can verbalize coherently, they aren’t storytellers, and vice versa.” Sheldon typically enjoys writing novels on action, adventure and science fiction. One of his biggest compliments was from Laurel King — best-selling science fiction author of “Living in the Light” — who called Sheldon’s novel “The 51st State: Panhandle” a “thoroughly enjoyable page-turner.” She said Sheldon had “entered the ranks of Stephen King, John Grisham, Michael Crichton and Ray Bradbury.” The most rewarding aspect of being an author is “knowing you’ve written something that very critical readers really like,” said Sheldon. “I had a French woman read ‘Colt & Big Thunder’ while she was at her home in Paris. She loved it, which told me the writing

was good and the story held up. That was encouraging.” He said another friend who frequently reads adventure novels T.L. SHELDON and spy stories locked all the windows and doors in her house after reading the first chapter of “The 51st State: Panhandle.” “It scared her that much to think the character I wrote might actually exist — and she is martial arts-trained and is proficient with a pistol, so she’s no coward,” he said. “That was a compliment because my fiction got to her inner fears.” He said although his family and friends believe he writes well, it is hard for them to grasp that he has become such a successful novelist due to the difficulty of selling books — even after they are published. “No one but yourself can drive you to do it,” he said. Sheldon continues to pursue his passion in addition to running his real estate development business with his wife, Hanna. Sheldon is currently working on a few other books, including a James Bond-style trilogy that is nearly finished. His published works are available on www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com.

A fire proof box can be purchased at most office supply stores. This does not need to be locked and it is not very heavy. This box protects these papers from fire and water damage, but not theft. The purpose of putting them here is that you know where these documents are located. Stock certificates should be held by a brokerage firm or financial company. These assets are lost all the time and it is quite expensive to replace them. They cannot be stolen or lost if they are being held by a company. The beginning of the new year is a good time to get organized. Let's go do it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR La Jolla Christmas Parade was alive and well before the 1970s The article on the La Jolla Christmas parade (“Revisiting La Jolla Christmas parades past with the grand marshal,” Dec. 1, Page 1) states: “had it not been for Barrymore Ash … La Jolla’s annual holiday parade may never have re-emerged after the parade ended during the second World War.” You twice mention a time frame of 35 years ago for the supposed

revival after World War II. In fact, the parade was alive and well during the 1950s — as a thenmember of the La Jolla High School marching band, I was in it at least twice between 1955 and 1958. It was a major annual event at that time — the parade route was quite long and the participating groups were many and varied, including bands, motorcycle groups, vintage cars, and so on. (Mis)adventures in technology Doing it Better By Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D. Not wanting to be a dinosaur, I decided to become part of the information age and purchase the new iPhone 4S. I waited until Black Friday to get special deals online, but I went a bit overboard and am now the owner of an iPad 2, a leather satchel to carry it in and a wallet-sized pouch for my iPhone, which can also hold credit cards. John, the manager of the Verizon 4G Wireless store on Pearl Street, who had ordered the phone for me, offered to set me up and give me lessons. The first thing I learned is that whatever he taught me one day, I forgot by the next. In other words, I must continuously use the knowledge or it leaves my brain without a trace. The reason is that I don’t have a proper storage place in said brain — this new information does not relate to anything already there, so it needs brand new synapses to go from short-term to long-term memory. My friend, Vance, came over the next day and taught me how to cradle the phone and use my two thumbs to type on the almost-impossible and muchtoo-small keyboard. Luckily for me, the keyboard is a mind reader: when I make a typing mistake, it knows what I meant to write and corrects it automatically.

The 2-year-old daughter of a friend of mine, when given a book, started sliding her fingers across the cover and announced it was “broken,” because no new image appeared. Is this whom I am competing with? I am adding new words to my vocabulary daily. Today it is “synch” (the past tense of which is not “sunk” like for a doomed ship, but “synched” as in “synchronized”). I have now synched my contact list and my emails from my computer to both my iPad and iPhone. They are all actually compatible and do everything together. I have also made a phone call and received one (with some trepidation). I have even talked to Siri (the computer voice built into the new iPhone 4S). She asked, “How can I help you?” I had no idea except to wish I were younger than my current 85. Siri will also answer any question I would have formerly looked up in a dictionary or encyclopedia at the touch of a button. I am looking forward to being able to download all my medical records to my iPhone and have them available to any doctor, whether in La Jolla or Timbuktu. Weather forecasts, traffic reports and the latest news are now all at my fingertips. As I sit here and write longhand in my recliner, both my new gadgets are hooked up and getting charged. I know they needed it because there weren’t as many little lines at the top right corner of my phone as there should be. My life, it seems, is about to greatly improve. To my now-synched calendar I have added an alarm that will ring fifteen minutes before any meeting and wake me up if I’m napping. I will never

again have an excuse for being late or just not showing up. Although my life has become significantly more complicated and I am consuming an inordinate amount of time on this learning curve, I am confident that if I ever become competent — which at this moment does not seem probable — I will be the better and more efficient person for it, addicted to these new little companions who will always be able to tell me where I am located, where I should go next and how to get there. I am looking forward to reading a book online while waiting at some checkout counter, or answering my email or watching a movie while in the waiting room of some doctor’s office. But be careful, dear readers: you will soon be in deeper trouble — for next, I am going to learn how to tweet all of you.

‘JESUS CHRIST

BY CHARLENE BALDRIDGE | VILLAGE NEWS

ith its mesmerizing musical score and its outrageous — some may say blasphemous — book, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1971 “Jesus Christ Superstar” swept into La Jolla Playhouse on Nov. 18, straight from Canada’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Staged by former Playhouse artistic director Des McAnuff, the production opened at Stratford in May and in November, completed a critically acclaimed — literally sold out — extended engagement. The La Jolla Playhouse run, with the Stratford company almost intact, continues through Dec. 31 at the Mandell Weiss Theatre. If you have not booked tickets yet, do so now. Even before the production’s rumored Broadway transfer was a reality, McAnuff, now Stratford Festival’s artistic director, and Playhouse artistic director Christopher Ashley planned to bring “Jesus Christ Superstar” to local audiences. The Broadway production opens in previews March 1 at New York’s Neil Simon Theatre. As heard Nov. 3, McAnuff ’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” is musically and vocally the most extraordinary of the decade, and that includes the Playhouse productions of “Jersey Boys” and “Memphis.” From the moment music director Rick Fox, who also plays organ and piano, raises his baton and the guitar produces the original orchestration’s indelible twang, it’s apparent we’re in good hands with Fox and his 11-piece orchestra, members of the American Federation of Musicians. The most-awed kudos, however, belong to the vocal artists, headed by Paul Nolan as Jesus, Josh Young as Judas and Chilina Kennedy as Mary Magdalene. Most aficionados, those who possessed the original concept album, saw the film and witnessed numerous tours, are used to hearing shredded voices. This is — above all — a rock opera, but the vocalism here is exemplary, not only in style but in the paced and intelligent vocal production that’s easy on the

Restaurant review: BY DAVID ROTTENBERG SPECIAL TO THE LA JOLLA VILLAGE NEWS

The holiday season is here, together with the melodic sounds of Christmas music and the blaze of twinkling lights outlining homes. The cultural directive is to shop, shop, shop. Our economy needs it! And, it seems to be working. Black Friday spending hit new records, helped by many stores, which opened actually on Thursday — no doubt after their staffs feasted on turkey. It takes strength to shop, to compete for the best deals and bargains. One recent TV ad depicts a woman exercising and training so she can rub and grab with the best of them. Well,

there is a restaurant close to shopping, where one may stop, dine and rejuvenate. Or, when simply delighting in the joys of the season, this restaurant is one of the best to kick back and savor good food. The restaurant — Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse &Wine Bar — has two locations in San Diego. The first is in the Aventine Center, close to UTC. The second is in the heart of the Gaslamp, close to Horton Plaza. The Aventine location in La Jolla is surrounded on both sides by other topquality eateries. On my last visit, the circular driveway to the restaurants was bustling, as car after car emptied its hungry passengers. There was real excitement in the air, as people antic-

ipated the fine dining and well-crafted wine pairings. Fleming’s is named after Paul Fleming, the legendary restaurateur who is also the “PF” of PF Chang’s, another outstanding restaurant located just a few blocks away. Paul Fleming focused his extensive experience and creativity in the dining industry to develop the concept behind this operation — and apparently, it works. There are Fleming’s restaurants in 28 states. The name says it — “Prime Steakhouse.” My server explained that Fleming’s serves only the top 2 percent of all meat, making the cut more tender and tasty. After careful selection, the meat is aged for an additional 21 days and butchered on the

premises, giving the chef greater flexibility to create dishes that have more flavor. By way of example, some steaks at Fleming’s come with the bone attached. This draws more flavor to the meat in the cooking process, so that each morsel is more stimulating to the taste buds. All steaks are prepared in super hot, 1,600-degree ovens that sear in the juices. Then, when the steaks emerge, butter is melted on top. Plates are so hot that the arms of the waiters must be insulated with piles of thick napkins to carry them. The interior décor combines a contemporary feeling with the dark, woodsy, clubby feeling that is so popular in upscale steakhouses, with spa-

cious and comfortable seating areas. The menu is concise, with dishes described in clear, short sentences. Choices of appetizers, salads and sides are available to accompany the red and white meat (chicken) and the good selection of seafood listed. Everything comes a la carte. My favorite dish is the “bone in rib eye” — a large, beautifully marbled slab of meat that is prepared perfectly to order. It is the “sizzle” that sells this steak — the wonderful smells that start my salivary juices flowing propel me to pick up my knife and fork to dig in. Smaller appetites can enjoy tender SEE FLEMING’S, Page 15

Donovan’s Steak House They may look good enough to eat, but the paintings and sculptures at Donovan’s of La Jolla are strictly off limits – so you’ll have to content yourself with the USDA prime beef, the eatery’s star attraction. If steak isn’t in the plan, pork and veal chops and succulent seafood will satisfy the most discriminating of palates. And at Donovan’s, fresh seasonal vegetables and your choice of potato are always included with each entrée.

Cafe Milano Owner/Chef Pasquale Cianni, brought Northern Italian cuisine to La Jolla 12 years ago & has been successfully pleasing both local residents & out of towners, even out of the country guests, with his home made pappardelle pasta, veal ossobuco, lobster ravioli and other many authentic Italian dishes. Cafe Milano offers your palate an exciting & incredible experience for the whole family at affordable prices. Partying with a superstar and a gingerbread city Starry, starry nights

with Vincent Andrunas La Jolla Playhouse (LJP) director emeritus Des McAnuff (now artistic director for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada) is back in town, and he brought Jesus Christ with him — “Jesus Christ Superstar,” that is. His considerably reworkedrevival of the classic 1971 rock opera with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, is a fresh take done so exceptionally well that Weber himself is said to have anointed it with his enthusiastic blessings. Over the summer, Des directed a run of the new

show in Ontario, where reviewers called the production “an absolute miracle” and “the best show you’ll see this year.” Now, it’s in La Jolla for a seasonally appropriate run through the end of December (and for which Becky Moores is the lead sponsor). Following final refinement here, the show goes to the big time on Broadway, opening at the Neil Simon Theatre on March 22. On a rainy late-November evening, LJP donors, sponsors and supporters gathered in the theater’s rehearsal spaces for a party celebrating the new show’s opening. A wide variety of very fine foods was on hand for the guests’ enjoyment. Two specialty drinks were created just for the evening — “Passion Punch” (red wine, St. Petersburg vodka, apple juice and cranberry juice) and “The Buzz” (Beefeater gin, ginger ale and a twist of lime). Thusly fortified, partygoers braved the rains for the short walk to the theater (fortu-

nately, plenty of umbrellas were available). The rain subsided during the performance, so guests had an easier walk back to the rehearsal rooms for post-show drinks, snacks and desserts. They were soon joined by the cast, so everybody got a chance to party with Jesus and the rest of the stellar performers.

Ginger, cloves, molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg — what’s not to like about gingerbread? Many of us have fond memories of this tasty and aromatic treat from our childhoods. It’s delicious any time, but too often overlooked until the holiday season. Of course, it’s not just for cakes and cookies. It’s also a great building material for houses and other structures — even entire cities! In the early 1990s, Sally Thornton founded an annual SEE SOCIETY, Page 15

Las Posadas Holiday Event Celebrates its 61st Year Dec. 11 will mark the 61st annual Las Posadas event in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. The Las Posadas procession is a walking reenactment of the biblical story of Mary and Joseph’s search for a birthplace for the Christ child. Everyone is invited to join the candlelit procession and sing traditional holiday songs in both Spanish and English as the players go from inn to inn, asking for symbolic lodging. The procession culminates with a live nativity scene in from of Casa de Estudillo as well as a piñata party. “This event combines the Anglo custom of caroling with the Hispanic tradition of the procession and the breaking of the piñata,” said Chuck Ross, owner and operator at Fiesta de Reyes.

“Las Posadas is a long-standing tradition in many Latin cultures and we hope to recreate the same kind of celebratory day that everyone can enjoy.” The Las Posadas procession will be lead by professional actors in period costume, including Willie, the acting donkey. Before the procession that takes place at 5 p.m., this event will also feature a daytime celebration and preshow with live music, performances and activities for children from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A variety of local music and performing arts groups will perform from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For children’s entertainment, there will be free craft activities that include making pioneer-style cloth dolls, as well as cornhusk dolls and paper holiday flowers. Hot cider, pastries, Mexican baked goods,

tamales, hot soup and more will be available for purchase in the park. At end of the festival, a bonfire will be lit in the middle of the state park and there will be a piñata-breaking party following the Las Posadas procession at 6 p.m. Stores and museums within the state park will have extended hours until 8 p.m. that evening. This is the second year that the Las Posadas procession is produced by the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park concessionaires. They expanded the procession to feature an entire festival that includes family-friendly seasonal activities. Admission to Las Posadas is free. For more information, phone (619) 2973100.

Managing the Hospital Discharge In April, my 92 year old mother went into the hospital to remove a tumor from her arm, the procedure went well and she was sent home. Three days later, she was back in the hospital because she wasn’t able to handle the complicated wound care regimen.

Look for the “Certified Organic” Label “Organic” refers to the way agriculture products-- including foods and fibers—are grown and processed. Organic farmers, in general, use no synthetic chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or defoliants, and use only natural pesticides on their crops when absolutely necessary. The “certified organic” label stands for a commitment to a system of agriculture that strives for balance with nature. When you buy certified organic food, your choice protects the health of future generations, yourself, and farm workers by keeping cancer-causing pesticides and herbicides off of plates and out of farm environments. This choice also protects water quality by supporting farms that do not contribute to petrochemical runoff; preserves topsoil because organic farmers build soil using natural amenities rather than synthetic fertilizers; helps support small family farms; preserves biodiversity through the cultivation of heirloom varieties; and provides you and your family with better tasting fruits and vegetables. singing more intimately in sotto voce passages. Young’s Judas is amazing. He’s feverish dramatically, completely selling his character’s frustration with Jesus; he claims Jesus believes the hype that he is the son of God. Judas, who loves Jesus and may be jealous of his relationship with Mary Magdalene, wants to live. His kiss, his foretold betrayal and his dramatic suicide are devastating. Kennedy’s Mary Magdalene is caught up in her love for both men. Kennedy, who also sings beautifully, is the calm amid the tumult, smoothly delivering the heart-melting “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and in the trio “Could We Start Again Please,” sung with Peter (Mike Nadajewski) and Judas. In McAnuff ’s concept, Jesus, Mary and Judas are close friends who totally love one another. However one construes that relationship, the effect makes the tragedy even more profound. The question is, was Jesus “just a man” or was he indeed divine? Other standout performers are truebasso profundo Marcus Nance as Caiaphas, tenor Aaron Walpole as Annas, Bruce Dow as King Herod and Jeremy Kushnier as Pontius Pilate. Kushnier, who played Tommy DeVito in the Chicago, Las Vegas and Toronto companies of Jersey Boys and was seen here as Dr. Carver in the national tour of Normal, replaces the initially announced Brent Carver, who portrayed Pilate in Stratford. The chorus is marvelous, vocally and dramatically, in Paul Tazewell’s everyman tatters. Other contributors to overall excellence are choreographer Lisa Shriver, set designer Robert Brill, lighting designer Howell Binkley, video designer Sean Nieuwenhuis, sound designer Jim Neil and associate choreographer Bradley “Shooz” Rapier. McAnuff’s staging is spare, as befits a piece originally created as a concept album. He commits a few forgivable dramatic excesses and like every production in this human’s experience, hasn’t found an effective ending image, but he is forgiven. “Jesus Christ Superstar” continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Wednesdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays; 7 p.m. Sundays; and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays; with added 2 p.m. matinees Dec. 20, 22, 28 and 30; through Dec. 31 at the Mandell Weiss Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Dr., www.lajollaplayhouse.org or (858) 550-1010.

Swimming is one of our strongest recommendations for most K9’s. It is an ideal form of exercise for a number of reasons. We offer assisted swimming in a warm water environment. The benefits are: • Non-weight-bearing (reducing stress on joints) • Facilitates full use of the front and hind legs vs. partial use as seen with underwater treadmills • Dogs are often able to actively swim although unable to move their legs on land (due to stroke/ spinal injury) • Allows manual techniques by therapist/ manual resistance to an affected limb • Swimming in a controlled environment is the safest way for clients to exercise. • Speeds recovery following injury/ surgery • Improves function and quality of life • Works reciprocal muscle groups throughout the session (helps correct muscle imbalances) • Reduces pain and inflammation • Reduces canine obesity thus decreasing the risk of other health-related problems • Increases strength, range of motion and cardiovascular conditioning • Prevents overheating through proper water temp • Increases tolerance for extended cardiovascular training • Decreases

It was the right thing to do, as we gained the reputation of being a solid, debt free country and our credit rating in the eyes of the world was the highest. We were the right people at the right time. At the end of the Mexican American War in 1848, President Polk was the right person to negotiate the Treaty of Hidalgo with Mexico to add California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada , Utah, Colorado, and clean title for Texas to our country. Papandreou, the former Prime Minister of Greece, was challenged by his countrymen who wanted to keep their retirement age at 55 and wanted to continue the government handouts they were enjoying but could no longer finance. Apparently, the people, or those who incite them, were not capable of right thinking. Their behavior could have thrown Greece into bankruptcy, with no clear “right person” to lead them and without the help of the EU, especially Germany, to guide the necessary changes to dig Greece out of their quagmire. The financial pie produced by a household or a country is only so big. Is as big as what is put into it. When you run

out of the dough and fruit and fixings that reside within the circumference of that pie, it’s over. If there are no more resources left to replenish the pie, you stop eating…literally. It appears Italy could be the next country to run out of pie and be the “boot to fall.” What then? Who has a big enough pie left to share? The ECB, IMF, Germany, France, China? Our pie in the US has been rendered doughless right through to our grandchildren’s children. My wonderful grandbabies are so young, it’s hard to fathom that their children and future progeny are now yoked to special interest lobbyist favoritism that has and continues to create debt for all the people. Where are the right people to stop it, worldwide? Rumor has it the US credit rating, you know, the one our forefathers worked so selflessly to establish, could drop further. tant, I am brought back to our locale. There’s a reason San Diego was voted “America’s Finest City”. Our Affordability Gap, the gap between income and housing affordability, now, compared to then, is infinitely better. In our fair city, with the right realtor to help, you can find the home of your dreams at an achievable price. It’s the appropriate time to get the right home for your family. CMC can even get you the right loan if you are so inclined. When you get the chance to cast your ballot in the coming months, if you are a business person, I suppose you will vote for someone who will be good for business. If you are a “spread the wealth” person, maybe you already have that person to support. For me, I just always try to be the best person I can be. God knows we all struggle with it daily. What would our world be like if every person, every day, always did the right thing? If everyone always tried to be the smartest they could be, do the best they could do, and be the right person?
