Bash blends beach culture, sun and eye-popping fun BY PATRICIA WALSH | THE BEACON Ocean Beach dives into summer on Saturday, June 23 when it hosts the 33rd annual OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival. A perennial Peninsula favorite and one of San Diego’s most defining community celebrations, the OB Street Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the heart of the festival anchored on Newport Avenue between Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and the beach. On tap for the all-inclusive event is an Artists’ Alley (see page 6), local food and
specialty vendors (see pages 11 and 13), beachfront entertainment (see pages 7 and 12) and beer garden, six stages of live music (see pages 8 and 9), Wonderland Children’s Area with pony rides, demonstrations like skateboard exhibitions, two community mural projects (see page 5) and a sizzling chili cook-off (see page 4). The chili cook-off will be held on the lawn at the foot of Newport Avenue. Cook-off hours are 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. “We really try to ensure that there is something for everyone at the street fair,” said Barbara Iacometti, street fair chairwoman and president of the Ocean
Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA), which plans and hosts the event each year. To accommodate the expected 70,000 fairgoers annually, shuttles by Old Town Trolley will run to and from two designated parking lots. To encourage and support cyclists, a free bike valet is being offered for the first time in the fair’s history. New attractions this year include laser tag and a giant waterslide in Saratoga Park on the corner of Ebers Street and SEE FAIR, Page 15

Chili cook-off serves up sizzling-hot fun For one group of contestants, it’s a family affair and reason for annual reunion
Ryan and Deb Knowles warm up for the Ocean Beach Chili CookOff by fine tuning their chili recipe under the entry of “Red Hot Chili Peckers.” This year will mark the couple’s fourth time going for the winning recipe. The cook-off serves a second purpose for the Knowles, though. It also gives them the opportunity for an annual family reunion.
BY PATRICIA WALSH | THE BEACON For Ryan and Deborah Knowles, the annual chili cook-off at the OB Street Fair is about love of family and community. On June 23, they will compete for a fourth year in the competition as the “Red Hot Chili Peckers” — a name that pays homage to the beaks of Ocean Beach’s boisterous wild parrots. The cook-off serves as their annual family reunion; children, brothers, mom, nieces and in-laws join in to set up, serve, tear down and spend a day making memories. With a full field of 28 contenders — featuring teams named Bar Key Chili, Chief Kiki and OBeeyahh Chili — the cook-off is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. There’s the expense: a registration

fee, food costs, an investment in equipment and decorations. There are requirements: all recipes must be cooked on site or ahead in an industrial kitchen, and contestants need to serve up at least 10 gallons of chili for 5,000 tastings. There’s also the time involved: Deb handles the details and plans the booth weeks in advance. Ryan spends three days in a restaurant kitchen simmering his recipe to satisfaction. Event day starts at 4 a.m. and ends 12 hours later. None of it guarantees a prize, which has so far eluded the Knowles. Why spend all that money and time? “It’s for a good cause,” Ryan said. “It helps pay for OB’s Fourth of July fireworks and I dig fireworks.” Weeks before the competition, Deb and Ryan — the latter a chemist by profession — are at home preparing. Banksy, the family cat, supervises from
the couch as Deb goes over logistics and Ryan tweaks his recipe on a small scale. As he stirs an aromatic pot of chili, he reveals his process: toasting fresh spices, roasting dried red chilies in a cast-iron pan with olive oil, cubing and searing a roast, adding ground beef, choosing the freshest spices like oregano and basil, and finding hot chilies like jalapeños and serranos. The result is a spicy, meaty broth with smoke and heat. Paired with Ryan’s homemade bread, it is a palate pleaser. Here’s how the Ocean Beach Street Fair’s chili cook-off works: Time: The cook-off takes place at the street fair at the foot of Newport Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on June 23. Winners will be announced on the main SEE CHILI, Page 15

Community murals help bind local spirit; will fete OB’s 125th anniversary BY PATRICIA WALSH | THE BEACON
Youngsters add their talents to the 2011 community mural during the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival. Murals are common around Ocean Beach, often depicting Courtesy photo by Joe Ewing flowers and signs of peace and tranquility.
Long before the advent of online social networking, people were connecting through community art and, in the process, giving neighborhoods a sense of history and identity. In Ocean Beach, community murals located on buildings around the neighborhood capture the essence of the seaside town. Defining and engaging, mural themes range from surfing to cars and flag-waiving Americana. On June 23, visitors to the 33rd annual OB Street Fair and Chili CookOff Festival will have the opportunity to bring two new community murals to life. The first mural is a surfboard theme. The second mural will commemorate Ocean Beach’s 125th anniversary. Both murals offer good old-fashioned tactile face-to-face social networking with a purpose.
The Ocean Beach community mural from 2009 illustrates the diversity of the community’s interCourtesy photo ests and talents.
“It’s not only a lot of fun for people who participate, but it is a significant part of Ocean Beach’s beautification. People love coming down and seeing all the art we have displayed across town.” BARBARA IACOMETTI Chairwoman, OB Street Fair
To participate, purchase a pre-illustrated tile for $10, dip brushes into paint and follow the instructions on the palette. “The community mural has to be
one of my favorite activities of the day,” said Barbara Iacometti, Street Fair chairwoman and president of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association. “It’s not only a lot of fun for people who participate, but it is a significant part of Ocean Beach’s beautification. People love coming down and seeing all the art we have displayed across town.” Ocean Beach artist and community activist Rich James started the art project in 1999. When he died in 2008, his friend and mentor Janis Ambrosiani took over the mural project. SEE MURALS, Page 15

Artists’ Alley puts finest creations, handmade goods at the fingertips “It’s a really lively part of the [festival]. People who participate in the Artists’ Alley create whatever they’re selling by hand themselves. So, it’s a real unique component of the fair.”
BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Truly a feast for the senses, the Ocean Beach Street Fair is a wonderful place to see and purchase art of all kinds. Artists’ Alley has become one of the annual street fair’s most popular areas, with so much interest from the public and the artists that this component of the festival doubled in space last year and this year. Now running along two whole blocks of Bacon Street on either side of Newport Avenue, 74 artists will participate this year, selected by a juried process. Only handcrafted and unique items are included, with additional activities set to include art demonstrations and interactive activities like painting and children’s craft making. Visitors to Artists’ Alley will be able to find a broad range of items, from the practical to the whimsical: purses, hats, jewelry, hair barrettes, paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics and even fitness hula hoops. Just about any medium with which an artist might choose to create is likely to be found among the booths.
LIZ GREENE OBMA creative director
Liz Greene, creative director of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, said the area is a mini art festival in itself, which sells out its space well in advance of the festival. “It’s a really lively part of the event,” Greene said. “People who participate in Artists’ Alley create whatever they’re selling by hand themselves. So, it’s a real unique component of the fair. “We do have other booths throughout Newport Avenue that have some handmade things or there are people who might be selling other people’s handmade things,” she said. “And then, of course, we have sunglass and straw hat people and so on. But this area is strictly for the people who make a living by supporting themselves though their artwork.”
Art lovers will be in heaven with this year’s Artists’ Alley at the street fair — a popular feature of the event that continues to grow annually.

Putting music diversity in front and on center stage 39 acts ready to rock the house in six locations BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON Now in its 33rd year, there are few events in San Diego that compare to the Ocean Beach Street Fair. From the scenic beach to a wide variety of vendors, the festival offers up a wonderful, free, daylong experience for the whole family. While there is no shortage of activities, the musical component of the street fair is one of the event’s biggest draws. Booked by Ted Wigler, owner of Winston’s Beach Club and the 710 Beach Club — along with Michael Head of Head Trap Recording Studios — the 2012 Ocean Beach Street Fair will include six stages, featuring music from 39 performance acts. Everything from New Orleans-style jazz to indie rock is on the menu. “We pick from an array of local and national bands with all different styles,” said Head. “This year we’re celebrating 125 years of OB, so we tried to have a great showing of artists based in the area.” With tens of thousands of guests, it’s

clear that a spot on the street fair bill is a prime gig for any artist. “We get hundreds of physical and web submissions, so it’s not hard to fill the slots,” Head said. The stages follow general themes, based on their location. The Artists’ Alley Stage will feature roots, blues and jazz; Wonderland will host groove, acoustic and kids. The Bacon Sun Stage will feature rock, pop and Americana, while the 92107 OB Stage will play host to the most diverse types of acts and genres, with a focus on Ocean Beach musical artists. One of the most alluring aspects of the Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival is the outdoor musical entertainment, shown here at the Main Stage with the ocean and OB Pier in the background. Organizers are adding one stage this year, bringing the total num-

Street fair vendors in OB are a cut above the rest Event provides an opportunity to give back BY MARSHA KAY SEFF | THE BEACON People who live or work in Ocean Beach know it oozes community like few other places. And salon owner Renee Pitera revels in that sense of “closeness, camaraderie and pride.” So when there’s a chance to help the community that has supported her Renovation Hair Salon for 16 years, she’s eager to step up. “Anyone who’s been around OB for a long time is eager to help out,” said Pitera, a mother of five kids — and three dogs. And that’s why she’s participating in the 33rd annual Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off Festival for the 16th time, once again donating all her proceeds from the event to local causes. This year, she will split the money between the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association’s Fourth of July fireworks show and Hedy’s Cause, which helps support a young San Diego grandmother who’s fighting brain cancer. In past years, Pitera has supported the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG organization and the Red Cross tsunami fund. She and about seven other hairdressers, including volunteers from the California Hair Design Academy, will wield scissors and clippers this year at her booth on Newport Avenue near Hodad’s. The suggested donation for a haircut is $10. Pitera said she anticipates cutting and styling hair for up to 200 people. Fundraising at the event, she said, not only helps the community, but her own business as well. Over the years, her par-

ticipation in local activities has brought many loyal customers to her salon across from the beach, above Nick’s at the Pier restaurant. Her other volunteer work includes serving as her daughter’s class librarian at St. Columba School and joining Dog Beach cleanups, as well as helping at the Surfrider Foundation beach cleanups and Paddle for Clean Water event. She and her staff have participated in an AIDS walk and a Red Cross Cut-athon — haircuts on the sand — to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. Her children, too, have joined in at events like tree planting along Cable Street and participating in the annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade, where they helped decorate a vintage rental car last year. “I believe you get out of life what you put into it,” Pitera said. “I’ve been blessed with a healthy family, a great business, an awesome community and the San Diego sunshine.” Renovation Hair Salon, 5083 Santa Monica Ave., second floor, (619) 2232887.

Iacometti keeps event on track from cradle to grave BY BART MENDOZA | THE BEACON The Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off Festival is truly a grassroots event, largely run by volunteers, many of whom have been involved for years. One key volunteer player is Barbara Iacometti. Co-owner of Details Salon and Spa (4993 Niagara Ave., #205) for the past 22 years, Iacometti sits on the board of the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, volunteering BARBARA for several more com- IACOMETTI mittees and serving as the Ocean Beach Street Fair chairwoman for the last four years. In her time as a volunteer, she has handled everything from distribution of event T-shirts to preparing the donation cans at businesses. Iacometti considers volunteering to
be an important part of being an Ocean Beach resident. “Personally, I would always want to volunteer because it’s more fun to be part of something rather than just go to it,” she said. Her favorite part of the event, however, is just before the crowds arrive and just after they leave. “As a chairman, I walk onto the street at 3 o’clock in the morning, when people are still heading home from the bars from the previous night,” said Iacometti. “I get to watch Ocean Beach transform as the streets empty and spaces are marked, things are set up, items are delivered. “I get to watch the whole thing come to be,” she said. “I spend the day there with an amazing mix of people attending, and then see it all come down so that by the next day everything is back to normal.” As a business owner, she notes the Ocean Beach Street Fair has had a
major, positive impact on local businesses. “It makes people aware that OB is on the map,” Iacometti said. “People come from all over and they get to see what’s here, so anything that brings people into OB is huge for business. We’re expecting upward of 70,000 people here that day.” She said that beyond the entertainment value and good vibes, the Street Fair has a larger purpose. “The profit that we make is what funds everything else in the area for the year, from the annual fireworks to trash pick-up,” she said. Iacometti said she plans to continue volunteering for years to come, both from a sense of civic duty and because it’s fun. “Volunteers are key to the event,” Iacometti said. “Just about everyone working on it is unpaid. They’re important because they make the street fair happen. If we didn’t have volunteers, we wouldn’t have an event.”
