A bisexual man was ordered to stand trial for murder of a gay man in a case where the victim's body has not been found. Brian Eleron Hancock, 48, an electrician from National City, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Peter Bentz, 68, whose body was not recovered after he went missing in November 2017. Bentz was apparently killed in his Ocean Beach apartment where his blood was found. A woman testified in a preliminary hearing that Hancock admitted to stabbing Bentz seven times. Bentz apparently posted a sexually explicit tape online of Hancock and a woman having sex, which angered him, providing a motive for murder, according to Deputy District Attorney Genaro Ramirez. Hancock is also charged with the special circumstance of murder during a robbery. If convicted, he faces a life term in prison without parole. Two witnesses told San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeff Barton that they helped Hancock dispose of Bentz' vehicle and other possessions. Both women said they did not know that Bentz had been killed, and they have signed cooperation agreements with the District Attorney's office. Neither woman will be charged with being an accessory as long as they remain truthful in testimony, according to court records. Rosa Hammond testified she and Hancock went to Bentz' home and she watched Hancock and Bentz have sex for 30 minutes. She said she immediately had sex with Hancock afterwards in the presence of Bentz.

(SBYC) offers. After the ribbon cutting, the SBYC will serve as a drop-in and recreational center for youths ages 10-24 and their families only. Rick Cervantes, The Center’s director of communications and marketing, said that since 2012, the demand for LGBTQ youth services increased by nearly 70 percent at The Center in Hillcrest. The Center's commitment to addressing those needs drove the urgency to expand its services in South Bay, he said. “We want to make sure that the next generation of our youth have the resources so they can be healthy and thrive,” Cervantes said. “There is a lot of bullying, hate, discrimination, so they experience higher levels of stress and they are five times more likely to commit suicide. We heard about youths that would take three different buses to get to The Center in Hillcrest to attend the Youth Center. So for us to be here is important.” Cervantes said they modeled the SBYC after the Hillcrest Youth Center — one of the first national LGBTQ drop-in and recreational spaces for juveniles. The SBYC is unique in that it also offers support and programs for their families as well. Cervantes said to start, the SBYC will be open for three days a week with program services and a by-trial basis will

discussion groups,” Cervantes said. “And because of the fact that we know about youth security, we are going to have a therapist on hand. “It’s an important step for The Center as we grow our services,” Cervantes continued. “We are here to fill that need here in South Bay, so folks and youths don’t have to travel up to Hillcrest. The great thing about our LGBTQ community is that we are not only in Hillcrest, we are everywhere and here in the South Bay, we want people to know that our presence is here.” Lucero Camarena, transgender youth services navigator at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, works directly with young trans people in helping them navigate their own transition with support services and their overall health within the community. She said that there will always be staff members present to ensure the individuals are protected and safe. As a trans woman of color, she said that representation in South Bay is imperative due to its demographics. The SBYC reflects that diversity in its choices of art and the various pride theme flags. Throughout the SBYC is a series of portraits titled the “Change Makers” series. “Our Change Makers series of portraits of LGBTQ leaders is here to show clear representation of LGBTQ of color because we find that representation really does matter in how we can imagine the possibilities for our youth,” Camarena said. On a tour of the space, Camarena said that though the SBYC is new, it is ready to go and has a lot to offer. The facility is equipped with a computer room with programs and printers for homework and Camarena said they will also provide tutoring services. For some fun, there is a

media and entertainment lounge that allows individuals to play on consoles they might not have at home. In the library, they are collecting books with youth-centered literature, while also providing LGBT literature appropriate for all ages. There is room for private discussions, rooms for open discussion and also a wellness space to encourage healthy living. There is an arts and crafts room with art supplies — even a sewing machine. “My favorite room is here, the clothing room”" Camarena said. “You can come in here and explore different gender presentations or try things to see what they deem that makes them feel more comfortable. They can also take the clothes home if they like. We accept clothing donations, and youth are growing at different rates. It is really helpful for them to have an additional resource for clothes.” Camarena said every day, Monday through Friday, SBYC will have discussion groups. The two discussion groups are Common Ground, where participants can bring up their highs and lows of their week, build community and connect. The other group, Gender & Identity, is facilitated by Camarena. “I get to connect with other trans youth, empower them, give them insights and resources, but also, they are able to share these things between themselves,” Camarena said, referring to her discussion group. “It is really a wealth of knowledge that we are trying to establish and connect. Everyone’s transitioning looks different. There is always a space for them at The Center. “In our bathroom, we have a lot of products that they can use or take home,” she continued. “We carry menstrual products, sanitizers, toothbrushes and a gamut of items that youth might need who might

not have the means at home to have these products. Both are gender neutral to ensure that the trans and non-binary folks feel comfortable and inclusive.” SBYC is equipped with a kitchen and lounge space with fresh food in the fridge, cold beverages and food. A pantry also offers food to take home. “Some of our youths are facing food insecurity and homelessness. We want to make sure that they have those needs met,” Camarena said. Cervantes said having these resources in one place is going to increase visibility and help in South Bay. “A few months ago, we found out about a LGBTQ youth that came to the South Bay Clubhouse at Chula Vista High School,” Cervantes said. “The youth came with family and had recently come out as trans, so it was the first time the family was experiencing anything LGBT. They started joining regularly and this youth was shy and timid. But we also had the Mi Familia meeting in the Chula Vista Library, so through the clubhouse, they told mom that they also had a program for her also. “The Center being down here already, you could see that connection of lives we were touching,” he continued. “After a couple of weeks, the youth was happy, more outgoing and confident. And the mom, just learning from other LGBT families on how to love and support your child, that is one of my favorite stories to hear, because they are stories that really touch people’s lives.” The SBYC serves individuals 10-24 years old, with different weekdays devoted to different age ranges. Wednesdays are dedicated to ages 18-24, Thursdays are dedicated to ages 14-18 years old and Fridays are dedicated to ages 10-13. The SBYC is funded by grants but also relies on donations from the community, which are essential, Camarena said. She added that there are some permanent items they are still looking for such as a cardio machine, game consoles and more computers. Ongoing needs include keeping the pantry filled with nonperishable food items, arts and craft materials of all types for youth to stretch their inner creativity, books for ages 10-24 (including LGBTQ literature), and clothing. Individuals will be able to use all of those items at the SBYC and have the ability to take them home — as many young people come from limited resources, some even homeless. “As the needs grow, the SBYC will assess and expand as necessary as they move forward,” Cervantes said. “Our needs might change on a dayto-day basis." The SBYC is located at 1180 Third Ave., Suite C1, Chula Vista. MURDER TRIAL She recalled seeing video equipment but did not realize she was being videotaped until after it was posted online. Hancock is married to a woman. "He said he was going to talk to him," said Hammond, who added that Hancock later told her he "fixed it." Before the videotaping, Hammond said she noticed Hancock take a credit card from Bentz's wallet. A receipt of a food purchase with Bentz' credit card was found in Hancock's possession and Hammond said she was with him when he used it. Tori Alvarado Flores, 51, testified Hancock told her he was angry at Bentz for posting the video. "He told me that he stabbed him," said Flores, who was later charged with an unrelated burglary with Hancock. She was placed on probation and went to a rehab as part of her sentence. Hancock was arrested Jan. 23, 2018 after his home was searched by San Diego Police. A witness testified she unwittingly helped him dispose of Bentz' personal papers and possessions, though she did not know Bentz or know he had been killed. Bentz' Toyota Highlander was found in the 3100 block of Boston Avenue near Barrio Logan. His wallet and other personal papers were thrown over a chain link fence in an embankment near Interstate 5, according to homicide detective Kevin Iwasaki. Iwasaki said a ring belonging to Bentz was found at a pawn shop where Hancock had visited. He said an off-white filmy substance had been sprayed in the victim's apartment and car. The video equipment, computer, and monitor were missing from his apartment, said Iwasaki. Blood was found on the deadbolt knob at the front door, and also in the kitchen, sink, entertainment center, and bathroom. Hancock's attorney, Jimmy Rodriguez, said there was insufficient evidence for first-degree murder and asked the judge to order him to stand trial for second-degree murder. The judge ordered Hancock to stand trial for murder, saying a jury would determine whether it was first or second-degree murder. Hancock appeared Jan. 25 before Judge Joan Weber after his case was assigned to her for trial, which she set for July 22. He remains in jail on $2.25 million bail. —Neal Putnam is a local freelance writer. Reach him at nealputnam@gmail.com.t

You too can be a saint Life Beyond Therapy Michael Kimmel

D

o you know the story of Saint Valentine? Neither did I. So, I researched it and found it inspiring. Here are two versions of his story. Version one. During the reign of Emperor Claudius II, Rome was involved in so many unpopular wars that it became hard for Claudius to recruit soldiers. He thought it was because they didn’t want to leave their partners (and lovers), so, mean old Claudius canceled all marriages in Rome. A local priest — Valentine — defied Claudius and secretly married many couples. When his defiance was discovered, Valentine was put to death on Feb. 14, about 270 AD. Version two. Valentine was killed because he attempted to help Christians escape from Roman prisons. After being imprisoned himself, he fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Before his death, Valentine wrote her a farewell letter and signed it ‘From your Valentine.' Thus, was that immortal phrase launched into history. Both versions have, of course, a happy ending: By the Middle Ages, Valentine had become a heroic saint. Around 498 AD, Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 as St. Valentine's Day to honor the martyr Saint

Valentine. Now, since none of us were around 1,741 years ago, it’s hard to say exactly how things went down. To me, the essence of Saint Valentine’s story is that 1) whatever we can do to help other people fall in love/ remain in love is doing the work of Saint Valentine, and 2) any help and assistance we can give to people who are being tortured/abused is also in his spirit. See where I’m going with this? You and I can be saints too. We can support people in finding and growing love in their lives. However, for some people, being cynical and condemning love is part of being chic, smart and worldly. These folks verbally exterminate love wherever they go. Don’t go there. That kind of hip jadedness comes from fear: these modern-day Claudiuses are not happy, loved people. They deserve compassion, not condemnation. Don’t argue with them. Instead, be an example of what Saint Valentine was about. Nurture love in the people in your life and focus on what’s kind and good in your world. What you focus on increases in your life and the lives of those around you. And give love to people who are suffering. Since we live in San Diego, the immigrants at the border come to mind. You don’t have to go down there in person, but what can you do to help them? If you pray, you pray for

their well-being. If you meditate, you could send them thoughts of love and comfort. If you have a few bucks to spare, you can send it to an organization/charity that can help these folks. You might be reading this and think, these people don’t deserve a chance to come into this country (as some of my relatives in Ohio believe). If so, I ask you to take a big step. Be willing to open your mind to see things from their point of view and — even braver — be willing to be wrong. And if you have people in your life who condemn immigrants, don’t condemn the condemners! Be willing to open your mind to see where these people are coming from. In the

case of my relatives, they fear for their jobs and livelihood in small-town Ohio and are afraid that more immigrants coming into the country will somehow make their lives even harder. When I keep this in mind, I have compassion for all these conservative Republicans that I’m related to (or not) and I can empathize with their fears and concerns about their families’ financial survival. I don’t need to argue with them. Perhaps, like Saint Valentine, I can counter the cruelty of any modern-day Claudiuses with my own efforts to bring more love and compassion into the world. You too can be a saint. All it takes is a willingness to be more compassionate and caring

to people who are suffering — whether they be immigrants or your best friend who just got dumped by their lover. And, when you do your bit to bring more love and kindness into the world, know that Saint Valentine would be proud. —Michael Kimmel is a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in helping LGBT clients achieve their goals and deal with anxiety, depression, grief, sexually addictive behavior, coming out, relationship challenges and homophobia. ban on transgender people serving in our armed forces is intolerable. With a 5-4 vote lifting the injunctions blocking the policy, the conservative new-look Supreme Court and the Trump administration have both shown that they have little to no regard for our transgender community, or the national LGBTQ+ community as a whole. Fortunately, our military leaders have embraced their transgender service members and fully understand their value to every branch of our armed forces. Hopefully the lower courts will decide in

favor of the military trans service members who have petitioned the courts and place this atrocious policy in its deathbed where it belongs for good. However, these multiple cases are not expected to be heard until the fall of this year. Last week, the Sacramento Bee reported on a statement from Maj. Gen. Matthew Beevers, the assistant adjutant general for the California National Guard. He said that California will not remove its transgender service members from serving. ruling, Beevers said, “As long as you fight, we don’t care what gender you identify as.” On Feb. 7, NBC reported that a bipartisan group of lawmakers from both chambers of Congress introduced legislation that would permit transgender service members to continue to serve and to allow transgender people to join the military, describing the Trump policy as discriminatory and one that undermines military readiness. Interesting fact: The United States armed forces are the largest employer of transgender persons in America. There are an estimated 15,500 transgender service members serving today in all of our military branches. This number is skewed, as there

are many transgender service members not openly serving in the military, especially since the personal attacks leveled on them since Trump took office. They have served valiantly for generations in silence. It is time that they are allowed to serve as their authentic selves. As much as Trump promised to support the LGBTQ+ community in his 2016 presidential campaign, he has done absolutely nothing to promote, much less protect, our rights as Americans. His policies — along with his association with right-wing radicals, hate groups and people in powerful positions who strongly oppose our rights — are a clear sign that he simply lied to us.

Will R. Kennedy: Democratic Party chair Conversations with Nicole Nicole Murray Ramirez

A

big congratulations to Will Rodriguez Kennedy who recently won a tough race for chair of the San Diego Democratic Party. Yes, Will is controversial and passionate -but what effective leader isn’t? And yes, he has made some mistakes in the past but who hasn’t? Will was supported by Rep. Scott Peters, Assembly member Todd Gloria and council members of the 4th and 8th districts. His also controversial opponent Craig Roberts was supported by state Senate President Toni Atkins, Chris Kehoe, and Councilmember Chris Ward. Will was born in the Bronx of New York and is a proud Puerto Rican and Marine veteran who served on the San Diego County Advisory Board. Fresh out of the Marines he

was a Republican for a few years and a past president of the Log Cabin Republicans. Will is the current president of Democrats for Equality and is also the state president of the California Young Democrats. He is the perfect chair of these challenging times ... the youngest chair ever elected at age 31, a veteran and gay man of color. Will is an early strong supporter of Todd Gloria for mayor and Stephen Whitburn for City Council. I know he will do us proud and many of us made calls on his behalf. Will gave me the following statement for this column: “This election represents a new day for San Diego Democrats. Over the coming year we will invest in community engagement, embrace our diversity and continue our tradition of being the Party of the People. Then our United Democratic Party will fight to take the majority at the County Board of Supervisors, elect a Democratic mayor in San Diego

LOCATED AT THE DHARMA BUM TEMPLE

Our San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit may be in Washington, D.C. for a national meeting of America’s police chiefs and sheriffs, but he was quickly on top of things within minutes after the shootings in Hillcrest on Feb. 12. Within hours I received a phone call from Chief Nisleit. After discussions with Mayor Kevin Faulconer, they have made this case a top priority and will leave no stone unturned. The most important thing for our community is to be aware, alert and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police department. Thank God an alert patrolling police officer quickly caught the man while he was changing and (maybe) reloading in an alley. The chief, to be safe, has put Hillcrest on high alert, especially after the vandalizing of the Rainbow Flag Monument on Feb. 6. Nisleit and the police department have launched a full investigation and will keep The LGBT Community Center and the community informed. A big thank you also to Lt. David Meyers for his outreach.

Welcome Brian Maienschein

Those of us who have known popular Assembly member Brian Maienschein were not surprised with his recent announcement that he was registering from Republican to Democrat. I met Brian before he won his first City Council race. He previously was a neighborhood activist and even then he was a moderate progressive Republican. The current Republican Party has left many good, solid, caring Republicans and is turning into a “Nationalist” right wing party, causing many to leave it. Brian has always had many GLBT supporters and was one of the very few endorsed by Equality California and also “GLBT Vote San Diego.” He is a dedicated public servant who has served his district and state well.

Human growth hormone in the treatment of HIV associated wasting syndrome By BajaMedica HIV wasting syndrome (cachexia) is defined as the progressive, involuntary weight loss seen in patients with HIV. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classified HIV wasting as an AIDS-defining condition in 1987, and characterized it by the following criteria: • Weight loss of at least 10 percent • Occurring in the presence of diarrhea or chronic weakness • Documented fever • Lasting for a duration of at least 30 days • Not attributable to a concurrent condition other than HIV infection itself Wasting (cachexia) should not be confused with weight loss, the latter of which implies the loss of body weight. By contrast, wasting refers to the loss of body size and mass, most notably lean muscle mass. It is possible, for example, for someone with HIV to lose significant muscle mass while experiencing an increase in body fat. What causes HIV wasting syndrome? During HIV infection, the body can consume a lot of its energy reserves. In fact, studies have shown that people with HIV — even those who are otherwise healthy and asymptomatic — will burn 10 percent more calories on average than people with no infection. Since protein in fat more easily converted to energy than fat, the body will generally metabolize muscle protein first when supplies are either depleted or unavailable in the blood. The depletion of serum protein can be the result of either malnutrition or a malabsorptive disorder in which the body is simply unable to absorb nutrients. In cases of HIV wasting, chronic diarrhea is most commonly associated with nutritional malabsorption, and may be the result of HIV itself as the virus causes damages to the mucosal tissues of the intestines. This gradual (and sometimes profound) loss of muscle mass is most often noted in people with AIDS, although it can occur at any stage of HIV infection. HIV wasting and antiretroviral therapy Before the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), the prevalence of wasting was estimated to be as high as 37 percent. Yet, despite the effectiveness of ART, wasting still remains a significant concern. Some studies suggest that anywhere from 20 to 34 percent of patients will experience some degree of wasting, albeit not at the catastrophic levels previously seen. While ART is known to improve weight loss and malnutrition in people living with HIV, it may not necessarily prevent the loss of muscle mass or replace it once body weight is restored. More concerning still is the fact that the loss of as little as 3 percent of muscle mass

can increase the risk of death in patients with HIV, while the loss of more than 10 percent is associated with a four- to sixfold greater risk. Treating and preventing HIV wasting There is currently no standardized approach to treating HIV wasting since there are often overlapping factors contributing to the condition (e.g. concomitant disease, drug treatment effects, malnutrition). However, there are general guidelines to follow in order to more effectively address weight loss and wasting in people with HIV: • Initiation of ART to reduce the risk of opportunistic infection, including those of the gastrointestinal tract. • Adjustment of diet to increase caloric intake by 10 percent (and up to 30 percent in those recovering from illness). The dietary balance of fats, carbohydrates and protein should remain the same. • Ensure regular exercise, focusing on resistance training to build or sustain muscle mass. • Liquid nutritional products (like Boost VHC, Ensure Plus or Nestlé Nutren) may be helpful in people who have difficulty eating solid food or those who eat but are unable to gain weight. However, like all dietary supplements, these are not meant to replace a proper, balanced diet. • While the efficacy of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) remains unclear in case of HIV wasting, it may be called for in instances where testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) is noted. • Used alone or in combination with TRT and other steroids, the use of human growth hormone (HGH) can help restore muscle mass in most cases, although the treatment is extremely expensive in the U.S. In August 1996, after aggressive lobbying from AIDS activists, Human Growth Hormone (HGH) was granted accelerated approval in the United States for the treatment of AIDS wasting syndrome. It is one of only three Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved uses for HGH. In a recent study of treatments for AIDS related wasting, HGH was found to have similar efficacy to the other two major treatments, testosterone and anabolic steroids. All three showed a significant benefit over placebo. However, HGH may have advantages in terms of increasing muscle function and quality of life. Clinical studies, including two randomized trials, have confirmed that HGH can reduce abdominal fat and increase muscle mass in people taking anti-HIV treatment. These improvements in body composition are paralleled by increases in oxygen uptake, the ability to carry out moderate physical exercise, and the capacity for high-intensity exercise.

Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick making out in “A Simple Favor” was the lesbian kiss 2018 needed, so thanks a million for that, Paul Feig. The comedy writer-director who we love because he loves putting women first in his films (particularly his muse Melissa McCarthy, in both “Spy” and “Bridesmaids”) has his finger on the pulse of so many gay things in his latest flick, merging dark, twisted comedy with his signature farce. Beyond the Lively-Kendrick hookup that rocked our world, Feig somehow knew exactly what was missing from queer cinema: a frothy Hitchcockian crime soap opera about a bisexual mom (Lively) and a straight mom (Kendrick) that also features a Mr. Mom (Andrew Rannells, gay). The Interfaith Shelter Network (ISN) has been an effective program for the homeless throughout San Diego County, so far helping 8,000 homeless individuals gain access to resources and services to get their lives back on track. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined the (ISN) in asking LGBT-friendly congregations to join the network and open their doors to homeless individuals at the ISN Summit on March 5 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. “We know there are a number of LGBTQ individuals experiencing homelessness and they need our help. That’s why we are asking LGBTQ-friendly congregations, who understand their needs, to join our care network and provide a temporary place for them to begin turning their lives around,” said Faulconer in a press release.

He said he pledges to “seek community input” on how these reserve tax dollars can best be utilized and would like to see them invested in “chronically neglected or underfunded areas,” such as housing and public safety in underserved communities. “My priority is reducing our homelessness epidemic and addressing this issue region-wide,” he said. “Providing access to health and human services is the primary and more affordable method to avoid the pathway to homelessness and incarceration.”

‘Shampoo’

Before we knew straight men could look as good as gay men and not even identify as gay, there was Warren Beatty as George, whose sexuality was the subject of speculation in 1975’s raunchy sex dramedy “Shampoo,” During a business meeting, George explains to aging private investor Lester (Jack Warden) that beauty school led him to his profession as a hairdresser, leaving Lester looking as stumped as any old white guy who can’t conceive of breaking gender norms. Little does Lester know that George’s bedhead poof of a Mick Jagger mane is the result of the lady carousel he’s riding hard. One of those women is Jackie (Julie Christie), Lester’s mistress. Lester is blind to their affair: “You think George is a fairy?” he asks Jackie. (Later, when the two are caught in an intimate hair-styling moment, George feigns gay.) Set against the 1968 presidential election, “Shampoo” is a sign of the times with regard to evolving homosexuality and big-picture politics, marked by an intimate love story that’s messy, bittersweet and holds up timelessly in 2019. “Mamma Mia!,” when Meryl Streep bopped and pranced around the streets of Greece’s dreamy Kalokairi island. One very famous woman’s infectious buoyancy, however, couldn’t entirely save the jukebox musical’s no-fun drudgery, nor could she cleanse Pierce Brosnan’s croak of a “voice.” For good reason, then, Streep bowed out of “Here We Go Again” – almost, anyway (her single scene is literally otherworldly and more tearfully tender than it ought to be; also, I’m a crybaby). But no matter: Your mom’s favorite movie of 2018 is a brand of stupid-fun I support, probably best viewed after eating an edible. It tells the story of Streep’s Donna without Streep (played in her youth circa the 1970s, through flashbacks, by a very alive Lily James), as she journeys to matriarchal womanhood with the man triad who swept her off her feet, naturally set to deeper-catalog ABBA bops/ballads not in its predecessor. Like an amusement park ride you promised yourself you’d never go on again but then you just couldn’t help yourself, “Here We Go Again” is just that, with the gratuitous and appropriately dramatic and well-lit addition of a mini Cher concert. “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” after all, isn’t really a movie anyway; it’s a gay reason for gay sons and their gay-adoring moms to bond together and want to plan a trip to Greece together and emphatically say “OMG, don’t you just love Christine Baranski?!” together. The show will be performed Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. followed by a VIP reception to meet the playwright, the cast, and famed historian Lillian Faderman. In 1977, singer Anita Bryant kicked off her anti-gay work in an effort to repeal Miami’s new non-discrimination ordinance. Successful, Bryant took that campaign on the road across the country. The next year, the Florida legislature ruled that lesbians and gay men were not fit parents. In 1979, Ronni Sanlo came out as a lesbian and lost custody of her two young children. Years later, she

It’s the perfect throwback to John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, his legendary score still bone-chilling 40 years on. The big sell here is Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Grandma Laurie Strode, even though she fell to her death in 2002’s “Resurrection,” a movie that doesn’t matter (and never mattered; it’s bad) because director David Gordon Green’s Trump-era “Halloween” asks you to forget that Curtis was even in a movie with Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks. This contemporary pseudo-feminist take featuring generations of women standing up to an evil man (sound familiar?) serves as a direct sequel – and, occasionally, slick homage – to Carpenter’s classic. Curtis’ Laurie is one-note frayed and fierce, but at least watching her kick major ass is more inspirational than anything the other Grandma Lauries watch on the Hallmark Channel.

It speaks to a time. It speaks to a community. It speaks to those “outside” of the community: “I don’t think ‘Philadelphia’ was made for gay people,” Hanks says. “It was made for straight people who didn’t understand how you could be gay or why you were gay.”

‘Some Like It Hot’

American cinema will tell you that if you’re a man in peril – running from criminals? Looking for a way to see your kids after losing custody of them? – slipping into a dress, plopping on a wig and powdering your face can free you from your troubles. Beloved crime-comedy caper “Some Like It Hot,” to which “Mrs. Doubtfire” and those “White Chicks” owe their thanks, would become the definitive landmark crossdressing farce, and the 1959 film is preserved as beautifully as Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis (and, of course, Marilyn Monroe) in lace and lipstick with this new 4K digital restoration Bluray from Criterion. TRANS RIGHTS And Mike Pence, our vice president, is one of the strongest influencers in the nation. His beliefs have encouraged some states to pass laws to discriminate our rights to live freely across the country. His support of conversion therapy, Bible studies for morality in public schools and his constant opposition to everything our community stands for is unacceptable for a person in his high state of office. We’ve come so far, but our community is continuing to be slammed by hate, bigotry and discrimination. As long and hard as we have fought for our rights to live as free Americans, every day we see the great strides we have made trampled — setting us back one large step at a time. It is clearly evident that we are not done fighting and that we have a lot to do as a community to make sure that our rights, and the rights of those that follow, are not jeopardized. Just tolerating our presence in society is not enough. These actions are an act of war against our community and all generations of the LGBTQ+ community have to align together on the battlefield to ensure our protection. This is a battle of persistence, legislation and taking a stand for peaceful coexistence. The resistance in our society is currently moving upward to higher ranks in society and politics, giving us a stronger voice in places where real change can occur. However, these courageous leaders cannot do this without the people guarding their backs. Unity and visibility are clear factors in bringing change. The world needs to see that we will not go crawling back into the closets that imprisoned us for far too long. This is not the first setback that we have dealt with and unfortunately, it will not be the last. But now, we have a much stronger foundation. Despite all of the bad politics, rhetoric and hate that we see being spewed, it is more evident today than ever that most people believe we are a core part of American society. There are those who

will never change their minds and contrive to believe we do not deserve the same privileges of living in a free world, and they have the right as Americans to hold those beliefs. However, under no circumstances do they have the right to undermine and control our lives. It is our birthright to live open and without restraint. Our youths are coming out at an age that I never thought I would live to see. You are our future, and we cannot continue to confront this conflict without you. You need to be involved regardless of your age. We, the older generations, are here to guide you with the rich history of combatting against the odds to gain our rights as Americans, and we will fight with you side by side. There were so many before us, and now before you, that made it possible for you to come out at such an early age. Unfortunately, not all youths and adults in our local and national LGBTQ+ population are as safe as they should be. This battle is as much yours as it is ours, if not more so. The decisions made today will affect the rest of your lives, and far into the future. There can be nothing short of all of us, standing as a people united. It is essential that we set aside the discord of age, the use of added acronyms, different variations of the rainbow flag and the petty things that we as a community squabble over because we come from different generations. If our transgender family is not safe, then none of us are safe to live our lives freely. These actions that stem from hatred and witlessness will trickle down to every fragment of the LGBTQ+ community. We’ve come too far to allow this to happen. As a great friend recently told me, “The biggest part of the war is actually the smallest interaction of purposeful ignorance. It spreads fast, like a wildfire.” We need to put this fire out — now. —Albert Fulcher can be reached at albert@sdcnn.com. (Graphic by www. CanStockPhoto.com)t

King of the hill A cherished restaurant and bakery turns 75 Restaurant Review Frank Sabatini Jr.

t was my great escape from Super Bowl Sunday, where a comfy television-free environment sent me on a culinary journey back in time — like to seven decades ago. In the offing were scratchmade meals and an obliging selection of all-American pies. Nary a loud-mouth jock was present. Only a mixed bag of quiet customers in the care of folksy waitresses donning 1940s-style coffeehouse uniforms. Hob Nob Hill is a San Diego institution that I never want to see go away. It’s an irreplaceable restaurant blending layers of history with gaudy, crystal chandeliers and recipes that haven’t budged in 75 years. Only here can you score salads served on chilled plates — and with chilled forks — and turkey croquettes rising from ponds of brown gravy. The cone-shaped wonders are accompanied by cranberry relish lopped into scooped-out oranges. They’re quirky but lovable accompaniments that look straight out of a forgotten Betty Crocker cookbook.

For soups, you’re provided warm spoons. And with many of the meal plates, you can bet they’ll come garnished with sprigs of parsley, just like restaurants began doing after WWII to fancy things up. Such precious captures of yesteryear give Hob Nob Hill the status of a well-kept museum rather than some outdated restaurant you should skip over. To consumers under 40 years old drawn always to trendy kitchens, this is your ticket to authentic retro-ness. No gimmicks. Just pure nostalgia. For years I’ve effused to friends that Hob Nob Hill’s Reuben sandwich is the greatest I’ve found in San Diego outside of my native New York state. They are architecturally accurate, thanks to chipped non-gristly corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, fluffy sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. The rye bread is grilled with generous butter. And sacrilegious mustard, which would screw things up, stays far out of the equation. Now, after my latest visit, I’ve discovered a French dip sandwich that meets my ideal. It’s made with shaved prime roast beef tucked into a crusty house-baked roll, and with a thin layer of cheese. The final, important element is the au

If there was bouillon or other sodium-heavy enhancers in the jus, I didn’t detect them. This seemed like pure beef drippings mixed with broth. Just as you would have found in nearly every breakfast eatery in the early 1950s, the Denver omelet remains a staple at Hob Nob Hill. It’s a nostalgic rush of diced ham, onions and green peppers bound by eggs and cheese. My only caveat was that the omelet was a tad well-done. But mouthwatering spiced apples served as a sidekick offered a forgiving distraction. Another breakfast inclusion is house-made coffeecake that changes daily — orange, apple, grape, pineapple, and blueberry. Where else are you going to find that? Their recipes date back to the original days and wash down best with Farmer Brothers coffee, or as of recently, brews and teas by Cafe Moto. The menu is loaded with enduring standbys for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They include biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict, chicken and waffles, liver and onions, roast turkey dinners, breaded shrimp, and braised lamb shank with minted Jardinière sauce. Richer than standard quiche, and sweeter because of balsamic drizzle on top, it’s made with a blend of eggs, Swiss and blue cheeses, bacon and onions. Buttermilk serves as the binder, and you get two slices per order. Couple it with one of nearly 10 salads on the menu, and you’ve got yourself a bellyful of sustenance. May marks the restaurant’s official 75th anniversary, when Kansas transplants Harold Hoersch and his wife, Dorothy, opened the business as Juniper Cafe. They later changed the name to Melody Grill and then Dorothy’s Oven before settling on Hob Nob Hill around 1970. Today it is owned and operated by Tania Warchol, who

has kept the place anchored to its history while appealing to young consumers with occasionally new menu additions and contemporary coffee drinks such as cold immersion brews. Also, look for upcoming promotions featuring throwback pricing on select items, including 75-cent slices of pie from a lineup that features such rarities as lemon-pecan, double-crust lemon and other homespun choices. —Frank Sabatini Jr. is the author of “Secret San Diego” (ECW Press), and began his local writing career more than two decades ago as a staffer for the former San Diego Tribune. HiroNori Craft Ramen has opened in Hillcrest in the cozy space where Espettos Brazilian Skewers operated for a short time. Founded in Orange County by chefs Tadanori Akasakao and Hiromichi Igarashi, the pair adheres to traditional ramen techniques using house-made noodles in thick or thin cuts, plus broths that are gently boiled for 24 hours. This is the company’s fourth location and the first in San Diego. The others are in Irvine, Long Beach and Santa Clara, with another opening next month in Pasadena. Aside from the ramen choices, top sellers include pork rice bowls, crispy chicken and salmon poke. The menus at all locations are the

A taste of Cajun Country has arrived to North Park with the recent opening of Shrimp Heads, where customers employ bibs and lots of napkins for digging into foods best eaten by hand. The menu offers everything from fried catfish and breaded shrimp to crawfish, king crab legs and bivalves. The “finger lickin’ deals” feature platters and buckets filled with various combinations of the seafood along

with corn, sausage and potatoes. Beer and wine are available, along with sake cocktails served in sharkshaped porcelain vessels. Owner Shirley Ng describes Shrimp Heads as a place where patrons “get down and dirty with their food.” She also runs Uncle John’s Cafe in Los Angeles, which specializes in Cantonese fare during the day, and Cajun cuisine at night. 2832 El Cajon Blvd., 619-7388184, shrimpheadssd.com.

A dessert vendor is coming to the Little Italy Food Hall. (Courtesy of Grain & Grit Collective) The newish Little Italy Food Hall will see its first vendor replacement in March in the wake of Single Fin Kitchen’s abrupt exit from the original tenant lineup. from La Jolla that uses locally sourced organic ingredients for its seasonal sorbets and gelato. Bobboi’s ever-changing flavor options include matcha tea with chocolate chips; rosewater with honey; pistachio; dark chocolate and more. 550 West Date St., 619-269-7187, bobboi.com.

A fusion of flavors from Baja and Northern Africa will set the stage at Medina — Moroccan Baja Kitchen, a modernly designed North Park eatery due to soft open in mid-February. Its grand opening is scheduled for March 1. Owned and conceived by chef Alia Jaziri, the venture began as a food truck in San Francisco and later expanded to farmers markets in San Diego. Homemade ice creams, ice pops and milkshakes in crafty flavors have churned in to Mission Hills via DixiePops, a retail shop that recently moved from Little Italy and caters to both traditionalists and those with adventurous palates. None of them contain artificial ingredients or high fructose corn syrup. The offerings also extend to “dog pops” for canines. Tale of two brothers There is nothing queerer than God Theater Review Jean Lowerison

orgiveness, compassion and humor are in short supply these days. That’s one reason playwright Miranda Rose Hall’s lovely new play “The Hour of Great Mercy” (getting its world premiere through March 3 at Diversionary Theatre) struck such a welcome chord with me. Other reasons are the near-poetic way the play flows, Rosina Reynolds’ fine direction and the excellent cast of five who make this piece resonate

with authenticity. But loneliness reigns in this little Alaskan town where human connection is hard to come by. The play revolves around two brothers — Jesuit priest Ed (Andrew Oswald) and Roger (Tom Stephenson) — separated five years ago by a tragedy in which Roger’s daughter Rachel died. The irascible Roger has always blamed Ed for it, and the pain is still so extreme that he doesn’t even want to see his brother again. Forget about forgiveness. These days, a grumpy Roger fills his time with a radio show (cleverly called “The Show”) in which he interviews locals, plays music and reports on local doings.

Miranda Rose Hall’s new play “The Hour of Great Mercy”

‘The Hour of Great Mercy’ Plays through March 3 Diversionary Theatre 4545 Park Blvd. Thursday at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets: 619-220-0097 diversionary.org As the play opens, Ed has just left the priesthood and traveled to the imaginary town of Bethlehem, Alaska in an attempt to re-establish communication with his brother. Roger’s wife Maggie (Dana Case) does more than a double-take when she sees Ed in town. Ed is gay, but never thought that disqualified him from serving in the church, because he believes that “there is nothing on earth more queer than God — so fluid, so encompassing the spectrum, and so devoted to radical love.” But the mortal Roger is less than interested in forgiveness. This is not a typical A-to-Bto-C plot, nor is plot the important aspect here. It’s the portrayal of human need for and struggle toward community that Hall is chronicling, and those are universally engaging.

The cast of “The Hour of Great Mercy”

Ed bumps into Joseph, a young gay man in a funk because of a brush-off letter from a presumed boyfriend. (Photos by Simpatika) Ed bumps into Joseph (Patrick Mayuyu), a young gay man in a funk because of a brush-off letter from a presumed boyfriend (or candidate). Joseph, too, is looking for connection. And so is Irma (Eileen Rivera), an elderly widow from the Philippines, who also lost a daughter to tragedy and now has no one to care for, or to care for her. She is a regular caller to Roger’s show. Hall spent a year in Alaska as part of a Jesuit-sponsored ministry where she worked in an end-of-life facility. “Mercy” was Hall’s MFA thesis production at Yale School of Drama. Her thesis advisor suggested she write it for her father, who had started out as a musician and became a radio journalist and host of a radio show. The play’s title refers to the hour when Jesus is said to have died, (about 3 p.m.), thought to

be a propitious time to ask for compassion. A particular shout-out to the tech team is in order. Set designer Kristen Flores and lighting designer Curtis Mueller have created a background that speaks both solitude and beauty that, as Ed describes it, “kind of electrifies the soul.” Elisa Benzoni’s costumes and Emily Jankowski’s sound design make solid contributions as well. How will it end? More important is how you will feel when it ends. I felt like I had met some familiar people grappling with universal problems. And that Hall had given me the gift of spending an evening with them. —Jean Lowerison is a long-standing member of the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle and can be reached at infodame@cox.net.t

Six reasons your next vacay should be a cross-country Amtrak trip You’ll see parts of the country you can’t see any other way

Cars, planes, boats, and other modes of transportation can get you places, but they can’t access some of the most remote crevices of our beautiful country, like the hills and valleys of the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountains. East Coast and Midwest legs of an Amtrak cross-country are pretty, sure, but those views aren’t in the same league as stunning scenes of snow-covered peaks, brilliant yellow aspens, winding rivers, slopes of never-ending forest, and myriad tunnels that still serve as individual feats of American engineering at its finest.

By Mikey Rox If you haven’t experienced America the Beautiful by rail yet, hop on an Amtrak ASAP for an eye-opening experience that could have you replacing planes as your preferred mode of travel indefinitely. Here are six reasons to book right now.

It’s way cheaper than you think

I booked my first cross-country Amtrak trip last fall after reading an article about how travel expert and blogger Derek Low designed a trip of his own, originating in San Francisco and ending in New York City, for around $200. Impossible, I thought, so I reached out to ask if he could help me score a similar deal. He obliged, and for a $49 consulting fee he returned a reverse itinerary (New York to San Francisco) for just over $400. My trip wasn’t as cheap as Low’s because he traveled straight through on his ride and I was making a few stopovers in cities I wanted to explore (Chicago, Denver and Salt Lake) for a day or two, but it was still mind-bogglingly inexpensive. Low’s trip totaled 71 consecutive hours on the train while my on-and-off experience lasted an amazing eight days.

hassle is a major pro when traveling by rail but equally appreciated is Amtrak’s bring-your-own-food-anddrink policy. I packed snacks and wine for days, which saved me a bundle on refreshments. I didn’t have enough room in my bags to cover the full trip (and I didn’t want to lug around that much weight either), but I got through at least two days without a spending a dime, money that adds up if you’re buying food

BYO food and drink to save even more money

It’s wildly romantic

What’s more romantic than cuddling up in the cozy coach seats with your partner, one head on the other’s shoulder, and falling asleep to the consistent drone of a moving locomotive after a full day of refreshments, sights and enjoyable conservation with other travelers? It doesn’t get any better than that for me. Oh, and the sub-level bathrooms are large and unattended. You can figure out the rest.

If you want to save the most money and stay on the train coast to coast, you won’t regret it. These Superliner routes are designed specifically for sightseeing, and if all you do is ride the whole way, you’ll be satisfied. This trip is about the journey, not the destination. You can get off along the way to stretch your legs and have a smoke break if needed (sometimes for longer stretches if there’s a delay in service – the only time you’ll look forward to this when traveling), then you’ll hop back on and chug along. No money spent on rental cars, fuel, hotel rooms, expensive dinners and bar tabs, or activities. Your cross-country is all that rolled into one for the lowest fee that you make it. —Mikey Rox is an award-winning journalist and LGBT lifestyle expert whose work has been published in more than 100 outlets across the world. The whole experience is relaxing from start to finish

Amtrak’s sightseeing routes all are aboard the national rail carrier’s Superliners, which consist of bilevel passenger cars plus dining, lounges and sleeping cars. I slept in my coach seat during the overnights I was on the train, but private roomettes are available. Just don’t expect the same low-cost deal I’m describing if you’re booking the latter. A sleeper car will easily put your trip over a grand, sometimes much more. Coach is quiet and perfectly comfortable for the budget traveler. No matter where you sleep, however, your trip will be relaxing from start to finish – because all you need to do is kick back and enjoy the ride. The biggest advantage to rail travel is that there are no long security lines, TSA bag screenings, or costly bag fees like you have at the airport, so you’re not stressed out before your vacation even begins. After you’re settled in your permanent seat, claim a spot in the Sightseer Lounge, which features floor-to-ceiling windows so you can watch your trip unfold right before your eyes. I spent every waking hour in this car drinking wine, making friends, and watching the most dramatic scenery glide by, complete with mountain views and wildlife sightings, including elk, bald eagles, moose, coyote, and more.

and booze on the train from the jump. It’s also an opportunity to eat healthy-ish in the beginning, because once your home-packed provisions run out, your good-for-you snack options are extremely limited in the café car. Seated meals, on the other hand, are sufficiently healthy if you choose the healthy menu items. If you’re city hopping on your trip, restock your private stash while you’re off train and venture on full up.

This is all about the journey, not the destination

This was an emotionally charged performance for both monarchs that showed the impact their dedication to service in the Court has had on the local and national community. Neors said that she was happy to step down and welcomed the new monarchs, expressing gratefulness for everything she learned and experienced during her reign. “This was a beautiful experience for me, serving my community, raising money for those who needed it, helping others at Easter, the Scott Carlson Thanksgiving dinner [collecting] blankets, schools supplies,” Neors said. “All of these were things I loved doing and I will keep on, helping the new monarchs, guiding them to have a very successful reign this upcoming year.” Newsom said that it was a great year for both of them. “We did a lot of community service, outreach, exposure and fundraising in the community,” Newsom said. “I would like for us to continue to work together with the new reigning monarchs and see if we can build bridges between communities around us and abroad.” Emperor 47 Darnelle of Wakanda, now the current reigning monarch, became involved with the Imperial Court de San Diego seven years ago. “I was crowned Empress 42 in 2014 and in 2015 I stepped down, but most importantly, I never stepped away,” he said. “I remained active, been a board member of the Court and five years later I am
