SAN DIEGO OFFICIAL PRIDE GUIDE 2022

JUSTICE WITH JOY! | sdpride.org

Dear Baby Fern, What will Pride be like as we come together again? Three years dragged on and blinked by us since our last full-scale Pride marked by nearly two years of isolation and survival. All too many “first Prides” denied and delayed, desperate to burst free. Cresting over the horizon is the brilliant liberation of our dreams, closeted by pandemics and shame. Growing shadows of hate have loomed and lingered far too long. It is why we have Pride. We do not have Pride because we are free. We have Pride because we are not. Our community will not let fear, hate, and intimidation win. We will not shrink ourselves or return to the closets and prisons of our past. Your kisses deserve sunshine. Your love deserves free air. Your clenched jaw deserves laughter. Your clasped hands deserve to openly embrace found family. Your body is beautiful and deserves to dance in daylight. Your pronouns are perfect and deserve affirmation. Pride is a reminder that our celebration is justice. Our joy is defiance. Our love is insubordinate. Our revelry is resistance. This Pride, we will unshackle our hearts and bodies from anyone’s expectations but our own. We will rise unapologetically to indulge in being radically only and absolutely who we know we truly are. I invite you to bravely discard fear. Seize hope. Be free. Whether you’ve been with us since Stonewall, or this is your first, welcome to Pride. Welcome home. Together, we will pursue Justice with Joy! With Pride,

Fernando Z Lopez Executive Director San Diego Pride

THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO

TODD GLORIA MAYOR

July 15, 2022 Dear San Diego Pride, As Mayor of the City of San Diego, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to San Diego LGBTQ Pride. I am particularly proud to welcome you and celebrate with you in this weekend’s festivities as the City of San Diego’s first elected LGBTQ Mayor. This year’s Pride is appropriately themed “Justice with Joy” because this is how our LGBTQ community has always pushed for progress. Whether fighting for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” marriage equality, or for transgender rights, we have pursued justice while being proud of exactly who we are. Now more than ever, we know there is more work to do – and together, we will do that work just as we always have. However, this Pride, I ask that you celebrate. Celebrate who you are. Celebrate who you love. And celebrate the progress we have made. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable, empowering, joyful Pride celebration. Happy Pride, San Diego! Sincerely,

TODD GLORIA Mayor City of San Diego

SENATOR TONI G. ATKINS PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE

July 1, 2022 Dear Friends, After two years of virtual events due to COVID-19, it is exciting that this year we will be able to gather in person for San Diego Pride celebrating with friends and allies that we haven’t seen in awhile. It’s also a pleasure to welcome visitors from across the state and nation who will be joining us for the San Diego region’s largest civic event. Pride is a time to celebrate the remarkable progress that the LGBTQ+ community has made since the Stonewall uprising. One sign of progress is the election of LGBTQ+ elected officials. I’m proud to be the first member of our community to serve as the California Senate President pro Tempore. I also note with pride that San Diego County has more LGBTQ+ elected officials than any other area of the state, including Los Angeles and San Francisco! San Diego Pride’s theme this year is “Justice with Joy.” To me, “justice” means equality and securing and preserving our rights, and “joy” is the ability to live our lives freely as we choose, without interference. While California continues to enact legislation empowering the LGBTQ+ community, other states are moving to take away rights. We are seeing trans youth being denied the opportunity to participate in school sports teams, and some states are even going so far as to criminalize gender affirming medical care for transgender adolescents. And there are infamous attempts to erase our history and hide our existence though laws such as Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Equally troubling is the recent Supreme Court decision to strike down Roe v. Wade. Let’s be clear, the right to an abortion affects women, trans and non-binary folks, affects families, and it affects us all, regardless of how we identify. The LGBTQ+ community has demonstrated time and again that we are resilient, despite whatever challenges we endure. We will persist and persevere until we achieve full equality. Further, we will work to seek justice for all who suffer oppression. As Audre Lorde taught us, “There is no thing as a singleissue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.” I look forward to joining you as we celebrate Justice with Joy! Happy Pride, San Diego! Warmly,

TONI G. ATKINS Senate President pro Tempore 39th Senate District

“Our County government has a great responsibility to create an inclusive and welcoming community where everyone belongs, is respected, and celebrated. Since taking office, I have worked with our LGBTQ+ community and employees to honor the contribution of LGBTQ+ leaders, bring visibility to issues that impact the community, and advance tangible actions to drive change. To ensure all workers are safe and protected, I led the effort to create our office of equity and racial justice, my office was the inspiration for a County inclusivity policy so employees are comfortable reflecting who they are, and we introduced a policy to ensure that all public-facing documents and communications are culturally responsive and inclusive. We have more work to do, and I am committed to using my position to fight for LGBTQ+ liberation.”

The awards recognize individuals or groups who contribute significantly to the LGBT community through their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts. San Diego Pride is honored to recognize the following individuals and organizations as our 2022 awardees:

CHAMPION OF PRIDE: An individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the LGBTQ community over an extended period of years with consideration to service to San Diego Pride.

owned small businesses and entrepreneurs. In that capacity and through the San Diego API Coalition, Alex helped turn out engagement around the redistricting process in both the City of San Diego and the County of San Diego. With a broad coalition working together to advocate for representation, the Asian Empowerment District in San Diego increased its AAPI representation to over 40%. Through the many different roles Alex still currently serves in, Alex is committed to uplifting Queer, Trans, Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander voices and representation in small business, arts & culture, and in leadership.

COMMUNITY GRAND MARSHAL: An individual or group that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the LGBTQ community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.

ALEX VILLAFUERTE During his time at San Diego Pride, Alex co-founded the San Diego Queer Asian Pacific Islander Middle Eastern Desi American (QAPIMEDA) Coalition creating intentional space designed to foster meaningful discussions about this often forgotten about intersection. Through San Diego Pride and QAPIMEDA, Alex was instrumental in helping put out a joint statement with the Pacific Arts Movement and over 80 local organizations denouncing the xenophobia, racism, and hate towards the AAPI community that increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. From this work, the San Diego API Coalition was formed using the LGBTQ Community Leadership Council as a model and Alex currently serves as the co-chair alongside Lauren Garces. The San Diego API Coalition currently has over 40 API-serving organizations in its membership and was crucial in helping create solidarity and healing during the tragic March 15, 2021 Atlanta Spa Shootings. Alex left San Diego Pride in September to join the Asian Business Association San Diego where he currently serves as the Director of Communications and Membership advocating for APIsdpride.org | JUSTICE WITH JOY!

TRANS YOUTH In 2022, a record 240 anti-LGBTQ bills were proposed in state legislatures across the U.S., primarily targeting transgender youth. Whether limiting or eliminating access to sports, bathrooms, inclusive education, or life-saving healthcare, these bills have created a hostile environment for our transgender youth from Maine to California. Being a youth is difficult enough without the added pressures of America’s legislative bodies conspiring to outlaw your existence. In the face of this hostility and struggle, it’s more important than ever to celebrate the beauty, joy, resilience, and brilliance of our transgender youth, here in San Diego and everywhere around the world. Young people have been tasked with addressing disastrous social and environmental issues created by the generations before them. They are at the forefront of the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and are leading with incomparable bravery and strength. Let us give Transgender youth their roses now, as they fight for the survival, visibility, and joy of all LGBTQ+ people.

STONEWALL SERVICE: A group or organization which may or may not identify as LGBTQ but which has stalwartly supported the LGBTQ community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.

SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE The San Diego Union-Tribune is honored to receive the 2022 Spirit of Stonewall Service Award. The Union-Tribune’s mission is to spread knowledge, build understanding and create opportunity in the communities we serve. We take great pride in highlighting LGBTQ+ voices and centering LGBTQ+ issues and concerns. Below are some examples of our efforts in print, online, audio, video, and in the community. On Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021, shortly after President Joe Biden ended the military’s ban on transgender service and nominated Dr. Rachel Levine to be his assistant health secretary, we dedicated our opinion section to hear from the local transgender community about what this news meant to them. We included a reference guide of terms at the bottom of the page. On Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021, we dedicated the opinion section to informing readers about what nonbinary means. Three writers shared their insights about a community of people who don’t identify exclusively as men or women. A few months later, our opinion page headline read “Loud and Proud” above three more stories of identit LGBTQ+ voices also played an important role in our Hello Gen Z podcast in 2020. The podcast introduced San Diego to the most ethnically and racially diverse American generation yet. This episode about stereotypes featured Bug Valladolid, who is nonbinary. In recent years, we have had the privilege of sponsoring San Diego Pride and have produced a series of videos that have been featured on our website, social media platforms, our weekly livestreams, and on cable television. We are extremely grateful for the help and guidance of San Diego Pride’s executive director, Fernando Lopez, who also serves on the Union-Tribune’s community advisory board and contributes to our Community Voices Project. ARTIST PROFILE How would you describe Jaye Naima? I’m a firecracker. I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I may have a little sassiness but I keep it cute. You know? I definitely had a Cinderella-like story and I’m watching this movie called “life” unfold so beautifully. The people who know me realize I have so many sides to me. So, asking me to describe myself is like asking for a 2 hour lecture at this point. I could go on and on!

JAYE NAIMA

What does Pride mean to you? Opportunities. It takes a real person to go through what we go through as a community. I relate to so many different demographics and I think that speaks so loudly that I don’t even have to show up to be in the conversation. My name moves in a room even when I’m not present. So, to be prideful it means to be fearless, be graceful, be innovative, and at the end of the day just be you. Where can our readers hear your music and follow you? I’m on all streaming platforms as Jaye Naima and (@jayenaima). They just call me Thundakat. My fans are waiting so impatiently for the rollout and I love it. I can’t wait to give you what you’ve been waiting for. Let’s go.

How would you describe Myylo? Myylo is a twunkified pop songwriter who makes witty, guitar driven songs about bois and queerness. What drives/inspires your music? I’m inspired by joy + comedy + kitsch + camp + bright colors + masterful songwriting + bois + acoustic guitars + background vocals that lift up a song + love + the lives of my friend + what it means to be queer + an occasional existential yelp into the void. What does Pride mean to you? Pride means radically existing as my most authentic and building community with other queer people.

MYYLO

Where can our readers hear your music and follow you? Readers can listen to my tunes anywhere and everywhere they stream music. All social handles are @myylomusic

What fuels your work? Since I was little, I always felt misunderstood and unheard, rejected and not taken seriously. All that negativity made me resistant, made me want to be seen in order to get my point across, everytime a person says no to me or tries to minimize my achievements, there’s a fire charging my drive. I know where I wanna be, I know that I need to work hard in order to get there, in order to access those spaces. I want to be looked up to, I want to be a role model for others with similar life experiences, for those who don’t see the light at the end of the hallway, I want to make their path easier than mine was, that’s what fuels my work. What does Pride mean to you? For me, pride means not giving a fuck about anyones opinion on you and your choices, is about taking back control on you to live your truth.
