ANTIOXIDANTS Are Your Friends
WHAT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS?
An antioxidant is defined as a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to counteract the deterioration of stored food products. The body’s trillion or so cells face threats from many different sources from lack of food to infection with a virus. Another constant threat comes from chemicals called free radicals. At very high levels, these free radicals are capable of damaging cells and genetic material. The body generates free radicals as the inevitable byproducts of turning food into energy. Free radicals are also formed by exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollution, stress, lack of exercise and viruses that are all around us.1 Excessive free radicals contribute to chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease and cognitive decline. There is evidence to suggest that eating foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which contain antioxidants in their natural state, are helpful in fighting the free radicals in our bodies. 2 However, many of us don’t eat enough of these foods, so supplementation is a must to support our wellness.
Supplements Can Help
Fortunately, we are not defenseless against the many free radicals. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of different substances that can act as antioxidants. The most familiar ones are vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and other related carotenoids, along with the minerals selenium and manganese. 2 Some foods referred to as “superfoods” because of their high antioxidants, along with proven, science-backed supplements are helpful as well. One of these is Nopalea, a great-tasting drink that is made with the fruit of the prickly pear cactus and is loaded with antioxidants.

The bottom line is that this is not something you have to live with. You do need to do your part to live a healthier life and get more antioxidants to help with your fight against the free radicals. It’s always important to keep your immune system healthy and strong. If you desire to live your life with vitality, more mobility and flexibility, you can choose a healthy lifestyle that can make a significant impact on your overall wellness and possibly your longevity.
