Definition of Inflammation: Acute vs. Chronic

Chronic inflammation refers to a persistent and long-term inflammatory response in the body. While acute inflammation is a normal and essential part of the immune response to injury or infection, chronic unresolved inflammation can be detrimental to our overall health . It can lead to immune system dysfunction, including a compromised ability to fight infections and an increased susceptibility to foreign invaders such as pathogens.

Why is Chronic Inflammation Dangerous?

While not a disease itself, chronic inflammation can contribute to the development and progression of various chronic diseases . These include cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries),1 heart disease 2 and stroke.3 Chronic inflammation is also linked to conditions like diabetes,2 obesity,2 certain types of cancer, 4 autoimmune disorders 5 and neurodegenerative conditions. 6 While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, anti-inflammatory foods are showing promising results in supporting healthy inflammation, thereby reducing the incidents of conditions related to chronic inflammation. 7
