BEHIND THE LABEL

On a TriVita label? Then it’s in the bottle. By William (Bill) Wheeler, Ph.D. At TriVita, our unflinching commitment to quality means that if an ingredient is listed on the label, we guarantee that it’s in the bottle. With a Ph.D. in Nutrition, “Dr. Bill” Wheeler and his team have 30 years of experience formulating nutritional products. He serves as Senior Vice President of TriVita’s Formula/ Manufacturing Services. 4  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

A

s head of TriVita’s Manufacturing Services Department, I am committed to ensuring that TriVita products meet the highest standards in quality assurance and control. To that end, we work only with suppliers and manufacturers dedicated to the same level of quality we demand. All must comply with the guidelines and regulations of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Tr i V i t a . c o m

Quality ingredients, quality products A quality product begins with quality ingredients. We accept vitamins and minerals only from suppliers who have TGA certification from a reputable independent organisation; our herbal suppliers must be certified to meet international standards or have SQF (Safe Quality Food) certification. Once we obtain the ingredients, they undergo rigorous scrutiny: they are tested for heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and any other undesirable elements—both by us and our manufacturers. If there is any doubt of an ingredient’s quality and purity, it is immediately rejected. For our herbal ingredients, we use thin-layer chromatography (TLC). This herbal identification technique gives us a “thumbprint” of the herbs; in other words, we know exactly what they are and which regions of the world they come from. This ensures that we use safe, completely unadulterated ingredients in our herbal supplements. Test, and test again How do we ensure quality final products? Testing and more testing. In addition to initial ingredient testing, all TriVita products go through mandatory third-party testing. And throughout the year, products are subject to random testing to further ensure quality and efficacy. Top-notch quality control processes are the backbone of TriVita’s Foundational Values (see page 11), and key to ensuring that our Members have the best possible product experience. So when you read a TriVita label, rest assured that what you see is, in fact, what you get: a quality product that you can count on. 18 0 0 -257- 5 3 8

WELLNESS CHECK

Good and bad news on health and wellness

A

s a nation, we’re doing well at living longer and smoking less. However, our obesity rates and lack of exercise are getting worse. In brief, that’s the good news/bad news from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in its latest summary of our overall wellness. The report, updated every two years, looks at statistics and trends in Australia’s health. It offers these key findings: • Life expectancy continues to rise steadily, as it has since 1890. Today, a man can expect to live to about age 84; a woman, age 87. This gives Australia the sixth highest life 6  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

expectancy rate among all countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. • Australians born in 2012 are projected to enjoy more years free of disability: about 62 years for boys and 64 years for girls. • In 2011–12, more than half (55%) of all Australians aged 15 and over considered themselves to be in “excellent” or “very good” health. Another 30% said they were in “good” health. Just over 1 in 10 (11%) rated their health as “fair”, and 4% as “poor”. Tr i V i t a . c o m

Australian Adults Who Smoke

43% 1964

16% 2010

• Smoking rates are still falling: in 2010, just 16% of adults smoked, compared to 43% in 1964. • Rates of death from cancer are falling. This is credited to lower smoking rates, better sun protection and advances in treatment. The news isn’t so good in a few other important areas, though: • Obesity: The rate among adults has risen to 63% vs. 57% in 1995. • Inactivity: Almost three out of every five Australian adults (57%) don’t exercise enough to meet recommended guidelines.

FIT FOR WELLNESS

Get moving into wellness

T

he secret to all benefits at right? Exercise. You know it’s good for you, but if you haven’t been active for a while, let these tips from Australian government offices guide you safely toward success. Check with your doctor first. This is especially important if you have a heart condition, diabetes, or have been diagnosed with any medical condition that might affect exercise. 8  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

AT NO COST YOU CAN:

Lose or maintain weight Reduce your risk of or help manage heart disease, diabetes and some cancers Get stronger Help prevent and manage mental health issues Be happier

Set realistic goals. Don’t expect to become a marathon runner or champion tennis player in a few days. A goal— walking two kilometers per day, for instance—gives you something to work toward. It also helps you stay on track and measure how well you’re doing over a period of time.

Dress for success. Wear supportive, comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the type of exercise you do. Tr i V i t a . c o m

Start slowly. Whether it’s walking, riding a bike or working out at a health club, ease into it. Otherwise, you could get hurt, get discouraged and quit. Let your progress build slowly, increasing the length and intensity of your activity as your body gets used to the new routine. Stretch, warm up, cool down. Stretch before and after your activity. Concentrate on warming up the specific muscle groups you’ll be using in your exercise. Begin your exercise at a gentle pace for about 5-10 minutes and gradually pick up speed. This gives your muscles a chance to warm up to prevent strains and sprains. For the last five minutes of your routine, slow down as your heart and breathing rates return to normal. Aim for good technique. If you’re trying a new activity or returning to a familiar one, focus on proper technique instead of speed or intensity. Some coaching or expert help may start you off right, minimising the chances of injury or pain.

- Ask the DOCTOR

Will a strong immune system help prevent premature aging? By Jyothi Tirumalasetty, M.D.

You probably know that your immune system helps fight off bacteria and infections, but did you know it also plays a role in keeping you feeling and looking young?

P

remature aging is one of the perils of a weakened immune system, so to help keep the clock from racing ahead too fast, keep your immune system strong. These 10 steps can help:

Dr. Tirumalasetty is assistant professor of medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Specializing in Allergy and Immunology, she received her medical degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. 10  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

1. Regular exercise helps to prevent damage-producing signals from building up in our blood vessels. By decreasing damage to blood vessels, we can decrease our risk of damage to the entire cardiovascular system. 2. Wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure prevent photo-aging of the skin and also help to prevent skin cancer. 3. Avoid foods that increase inflammation, including foods high in trans fats and nitrates. Trans fats raise levels of “bad” cholesterol in the bloodstream, possibly leading to heart conditions. Nitrates, present Tr i V i t a . c o m

in food such as cured meat, may increase risk of gastrointestinal cancers. 4. Lower your stress levels. Managing stress via healthy outlets is an important way to ward off premature aging and keep the immune system functioning at an optimal level. 5. Maintain a healthy body weight. This decreases the production of harmful signals that may cause increased inflammation. Excessive abdominal (adipose) fat is associated with many chronic illnesses including heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. 6. Get between 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. Sleep deprivation has been shown to weaken the immune system and also decrease memory. 7. Avoid excessive alcohol. Alcohol in large quantities may deplete your body of essential nutrients. Excessive alcohol can also lead to chronic illnesses such as liver disease and gout. 8. Avoid contact with sick people, prolonged exposure to cold and wash your hands frequently. Recurrent infections may weaken the immune system and may play a role in premature aging. 9. Eat healthy. Diets similar to the traditional Mediterranean diet are associated with healthy aging. Diets high in fiber, fruits and vegetables are associated with lower ageassociated illnesses. 10. K eep your brain active. Taking part in mentally-stimulating activities such as puzzles, games and reading may help ward off memory loss.

WEIGHING IN

Stay on track with your weight loss goals There are countless fad diets and weight loss programs that promise quick and easy weight loss. However, healthcare professionals agree that the foundation of successful weight loss remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with exercise. How do you get there? It all starts with permanent changes in your lifestyle habits:

Stay motivated Write down your motivation for weight loss, whether it’s an upcoming vacation or better overall health. Keep this list handy for those inevitable moments of temptation. Eat healthier foods Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total energy intake. One way to do this is by eating more plantbased foods—fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition. Get and stay active Exercise combined with calorie restriction can help give you the weight-loss edge. Exercise also offers numerous health benefits, including boosting your mood, strengthening 12  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

your cardiovascular system and reducing your blood pressure. Change your perspective After assessing your personal weight loss challenges, create a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged previous efforts. You may have an occasional setback. Instead of giving up, start fresh the next day. Remember that you’re planning to change your life. It won’t happen all at once and there will be days that you doubt yourself. Stick to your healthy lifestyle and be proud of even modest results. Reference: Weight management strategies for success. B-12 UPDATE

“B” in the know

A

n essential nutrient, Vitamin B-12 plays a key role in human health. So when you don’t get enough, it can lead to serious problems. Below, some important things to know about B-12 deficiency. B-12 in your diet? It may not matter. You may eat plenty of foods packed with B-12, but as we age, it becomes increasingly difficult to absorb it from food: as many as 10% to 30% of older people may be unable to absorb B-12 from their diet. This may be the leading cause of B-12 deficiency in adults.1,2 It could be age—or a B-12 deficiency. Many of us expect that as the years add up, so will certain “age-related” signs and symptoms. However, research shows that many of these symptoms may also be a 14  |   V I T A J O U R N A L

manifestation of B-12 deficiency: loss of concentration, memory loss, disorientation, weakness, tiredness, symptoms of dementia and more.3 Check your medicine cabinet. If you’re taking certain medications, you could be at increased risk for B-12 deficiency. Long-term use of metformin (a diabetes drug) and protein pump inhibitors (used for acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease) has been associated with B-12 deficiency.4 References: 1 R yan-Harshman, M., & Aldoori, W.
